Sandy, I always loved that line...."Fair winds and following seas..."  I wish I could remember where and when I first heard it.

Joan, what a let down it must have been for you - and your family.  But you sure were in no position to take a 10 hour drive while dealing with a stomach flu.   We'll all just have to move our travel mercy prayers up another week!   :)

Thank you Jane and Jenny for your good wishes to Dori. I intend to pass your messages on to her as you have written. She will really be pleased with that. She knows how much you all mean to me, and is grateful for you.

The origin of the quote "Fair Winds and Following Seas" is unknown. It is often said to have been lifted from a poem, phrase, or literary work, but to the best of this researcher's knowledge, it wasn't. Over the last century at least, the two quotes "Fair Winds" and "Following Seas" have evolved, by usage, into a single phrase which is often used as a nautical blessing.
"Fair Winds": The Dictionary of American Regional English defines "Fair Wind" as "safe journey; good fortune." An early example of the phrase's use is in Herman Melville's Moby Dick, published in 1851, where it says near the end "Let me square the yards, while we may, old man, and make a fair wind of it homeward." In other words, let me square the yards (add on all sail) and make a safe journey home.

"Following Seas": Defined by Bowditch's American Practical Navigator as "A sea in which the waves move in the general direction of the heading." It further defines "Tide" as "the periodic rise and fall of the water resulting from gravitational interactions between the sun, moon, and earth. . . . the accompanying horizontal movement of the water is part of the same phenomenon." In simple terms: the movement of the water, the waves, and the surface, correspond with the movement of the tide.

"Fair Winds and Following Seas" is really two quotes originating from different sources. The two quotes are a nautical phrase of good luck--a blessing as it were--as the person, group, or thing it is said to departs on a voyage in life. It is often used at a "beginning" ceremony such as a commissioning ceremony of a ship or people, as well as in retirement, change of command, or farewell ceremonies.

I am just checking in to bid you all a great good night and sweet dreams.
I just was a couch jockey today, easy day. but it is time to hit the Hay.
Hope to see you all tomorrow, I made pancakes this morning giving Nancy a brake. I am thinking about making my casserole  for noon meal tomorrow.

JUNE, I know that phrase as a nautical blessing and as it is also extended to other areas of life.  I've looked it up on many occasions myself so I'm familiar with the definition you printed.  I just don't remember where I first heard it given.  I know it's been in my memory for a very long time.  And I love hearing it!

And now, Good night Everyfriend and may God bless us, every one!

I'm off to church in a few minutes.  I'll stay for coffee hour after and then make a stop at the Farmer's Market.  Maybe the guy with "any 3 baskets for $5." will be there again this week.  That was a good deal.

I'll check in later to see what's going on!

Hi everyone.  We are in for another hot day in the 90's.  This will be Church day and getting something to eat either to bring home or eat out depending on how tired we are after church.  I will rest and listen to Don's program and then catch the end of the golf match.  Yesterday was  pretty quiet day.  I did go to my meeting yesterday and watch the golf match for about 3 hours.

Jeanne, glad you were feeling well enough to post yesterday.  Shopping can be so tiring.

June, our dreams sure can be frightening and disturbing on occasion.  Thanks for looking up and sharing the descriptions of Fair Winds and Following Seas.  I understood the idea of Fair Winds but not what the Following Seas met. I am not sure I ever heard that expression before.

Hal, very aggravating to turn and have your wheels go over a curb.  Fortunately I have never gotten stranded nor ruined a tire and it doesn't happen very often.  I had intended to continue to go to the pedicure place until I had such a bad experience.  I don't have Medicare Part B so I do have an out of pocket deductible at the doctor's office but it is the same as I was paying for the pedicure.

Shirley, I will read the article on flushing the brain as it sounds very interesting.

Jenny, nice to have several offers to consider when selling a home and for that to happen quickly.  Is Brian staying in Austin until the home is sold?

Joan, sure hope you will be up to the trip on Tuesday.  Plans can always be remade, as you all have done.

Lloyd, nice of you giving Nancy a break in the kitchen.  Having to do some kitchen duty this past year I sometimes wonder how my wife has done it when she hasn't felt well.  After I retired I told her if she would cook I would do the cleaning up afterwards.  I will continue to do that as long as possible. She has resumed some of the cooking duties as is feeling better.

Amy, when you mention hanging your clothes out each time I can recall the how good sheets and pillow cases felt and smelled from being outside.

halkel

Good Morning Everyone!

Well I am all ready for church, waiting on wife, she has greeting duty this morning.  So we have to be there early.  But I don't mind I enjoy hearing the choir practicing, get to hear the songs twice.....LOL

Janie, guess you ears were burning last night.  We went over to my daughters for supper and I was telling my SIL about how I envied you for having the Amish markets there with all the fresh stuff.  We live in what "used" to be a produce area but the city has grown over all the farm land.

Well,  my thoughts are with the English this morning.  My wife being English we were quite interested in the goings on.  Eight minutes was all it took to kill and injure so many people.  God be with those hurt and the families of those killed.  Just a matter of time before we have to endure one of these terror attacks.

Got to get a move on. SUPPOSE to be at church at 9......going to be pushing it.

JaneS

Well, I've been to church and our visiting priest opened his sermon with "This sermon is going to be a doozy this morning so you might want to do your best to stay awake and listen."  Everyone laughed but there was not a nodding head in the place.  He's quite a "doozy" himself.  We've had him for 3 Sundays now and I wish it were more.

I stayed for coffee hour and then went up to the Farmer's Market.  The "3 baskets for $5. guy was there.  I got tomatoes that he grew in Southern NY, cooking onions from VA. and Corn from, I think he said VA.  Made a stop at WM and now I'm going to have some lunch.

We are having a rather chilly, rainy day today.  Right now it's only in the low 50s but supposed to reach the low 70s by mid afternoon.

HAL...my ears were a bit itchy last evening.  But that's OK.  My grandmother used to say if it's your right ear they're saying something good but if it's your left ear they're saying something bad.  I'm pretty sure it was my right ear.

Gotta go scrounge up some lunch.  Later my friends!

Gloria

Good morning everyone, just did not want to get started today. It was noisy  around here last night. Sirens going by, don't know why so maybe an accident or a brush fire or what. It was getting light before I finally fell asleep.

JANE   hope you had a day just for you felt like doing yesterday.

AMY  yes Friday was a long day. Still feel worn out from it.

LLOYD  hope your headache is gone.

HAL  my next pain doctor appointment is on the 15th and will let him know the last one did nothing. If the next one doesn't either there is no sense having any more.

LARRY  are you the one who told me how to use one click on the mouse? I put new batteries in mine and now have to use 2 clickes on everything. I keep forgetting and wonder why things don't open. Mouse is driving me bonkers, it is now bouncing all over. I now have a Tracfone again but different from the flip one I had before. This one I can get online with and email and text-text is out for me. Easier for me.

JEANNE LEE  I miss food shopping but know I would never be able to do that again. I can get online for delivery and send my CNA to the store for me.

MARY ANN  the one I now have has voice mail -that is when I figure how to set it up. I went online to see what they had and then called them to order it.

JUNE  that was some nightmare you had. My car of choice was always and Olds. Hope the surprise birthday party for Dori was a huge success.

SHIRLEY  I copied that link and will check it. No you did not throw your brains into the trash. You just do too much. Remember  now is the time to do just what YOU want to do to enjoy life. You worked hard enough already.

JOAN  so sorry you got sick. We all worry about you and miss you. You have wonderful family taking care of you. We all love and miss you and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Hope you are feeling up the the trip. I know what you used to say, anything over an hour drive and you would fly, so it will be a long ride for you. I know Joe and
Ed will see you are comfortable.

JUNE  thanks for using Google the way you do and your inquisitive mind.

CallieOK

Good Morning,

I don't remember if I mentioned that I'm on a 5-day antibiotic regimen for an infection that turned out to be a bit more than I thought it was.
Antibiotics always make me a bit "wonky ...<ier> than usual?  :crazy2: so I didn't go to church this morning.

Kitchen retile project is supposed to start tomorrow morning but the really messy part will be on Tuesday or Wednesday..  Yesterday,  I "stripped" the kitchen of everything I could reach and/or lift/drag into another room.  Grandson is coming tomorrow afternoon to take down the things on the tops of the cabinets.  Might not really be necessary - but some of the things are heirlooms and I don't want to take a chance of them being jarred off.  (Also a good reason to clean everything).

Miss Emily is working at the national college girls' softball tournament being held at the American Softball Association Stadium in OKC.  (It's being broadcast on ESPN - if anyone's interested).  Sometimes she's in the background of a camera shot so, since OU was playing Friday night,  I started watching.

Emily isn't assigned to the same place for every game nor is she always outside in the stadium.  Usually, she's keeping the water/snack bars at the back of the dugouts stocked.
However, her Mom texted me during one game that she was outside and I spotted her a couple of times.

Now I'm caught up in the tournament and am watching most of the games.  The early afternoon game yesterday was delayed by about 2 hours because of rain......and nary a drop fell at my house about 15 miles away.  :idiot2:

Going to be a hectic week for me.   Hope the antibiotics do their work and I'm back to whatever normal is by Tuesday.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

Carol

Callie:  I hope you are back to normal on Tuesday as well.  We don't want you abnormal --- ;)

Gloria:  Our daughter gives me her old (to her) iphones whenever her company upgrades and I can forget the new iPhone 6 just as often as I would forget to bring the older one.  This is larger -

June:  I may dream but rarely remember any dream and Don dreams and remembers everything.

Joan:  Sorry you had the flu symptoms.  wishing you good health so your journey  will be enjoyable.

Jenny:  Your son will soon realize how busy the roads are now - I hope everything goes well with them.  Are they looking close to you?

Lindancer

Good afternoon, on a cool cloudy day.  Maybe rain later.

gloria, I did not get to sleep until nearly day light, and woke up when the radio announced 8:18 I have never slept that late.  About 10:30 the door bell rang while I was still getting dress. My next door neighbor wanted to know if everything was alright.  As I had not opened the back drapes yet.

Joan, I join the rest of our group with prays, we soon hear about your safe trip to Ala. My husband was from Alex. city.Ala.

June I also send a birthday wish to Dori.  I too, have nightmares.  I had one this morning, that I went into a restaurant, I was tired and I wanted to set down, but the only chair they would let me have was about 2ft. off the ground, and the people were making fun of me, for being old. Now that was a crazy dream

Callie, I know what you mean about antibiotics, I have had to take a set of them when I got bite by a tick.  Twice

Gloria,  Miss Ellen posted a Facebook picture today of two friends and her spending the day at Northport Harbor on Long Island.  Looked beautiful.
Edit:  they went to see a production of "Oklahoma" at the John W. Engeman theater.  One of their friends, who is from Oklahoma, was in the show.
Do you know this place?

I'm feeling 100% better and wasn't "wonky" today.
Had some fresh strawberries and blueberries in the fridge that needed to be used so I baked blueberry and strawberry muffins.   The recipe for the strawberry ones suggested using yogurt instead of milk (had to adjust some of the other ingredients).
I can't have dairy while I'm on these antibiotics and had some strawberry yogurt in the fridge - so used that.  Yum Yum!
Another edit:   Grandson/girlfriend are coming tomorrow to help finish "stripping the kitchen".  Now, there are chocolate chip cookies waiting for them.

Sleep well Everyfriend and have pleasant dreams.

June Drabek

I was in here gabbing away and I hit the wrong key and my message completely disappeared. It has been a busy day..Chapel, then lunch, then spent almost two hours ordering groceries on line, and now I am weary. Somewhere in there I did have a short nap, but I forget just when that happened.

So, I will cut this short, with prayers, Love and high hopes. June
As long as we are here, let's dance.

JaneS

I've been busy off and on most of the day but i don't seem to have accomplished a lot.  I did pay some bills and I changed the Spring and Summer clothers to my bedroom closet and dresser and put the winter ones in the spare bedroom closet and dresser.  I also packed away the winter shoes and boots and got out the white ones.  Since Memorial Day has come and gone, it's OK to wear white shoes now.

The doggies have been out and I'm ready to hit the hay.  I'm tired but it's not even 9:30.  If I go to bed now, the girls will want to get up with the chickens in the morning and then it's going to be a long day.  My human dynamo cleaning lady will be here around 9 and do a once over. My agreement is for 2 hours but I don't think she'll take that long.  If it's a nice day, I might see if she wants to cleany the yard chairs.and the swing.

Then I have TLH after school and this week we have our "Official School Closing Party" on Friday.  We have agreed that it's become a tradition for us to have supper at McDonalds and then go to the ice cream shop for dessert on the last day of school.  We talked about this last week and agreed that we have to do it every year until she graduates.  When I said I'd be 90 by that time and maybe I wouldn't be able to drive, she said, "Don't worry, Grammy.  If you can't drive by then, I can.  I'l pick YOU up!"  How's that for a plan.

Good Night Everyfriend and may God bless us, every one!

Good morning everyone..

Another rainy day here, will get inside work done.Yesterday we went to check out a sewing machine that I had high hopes would fit in my treadle machine but that didn't pan out..we stopped for lunch and then checked out the new community hall they are building. We used the old one for our sewing but it had burnt down, now they have the walls up on the new one. Came home and I found more of Janies zzz's  two hours of them!!!

Not sure what today will bring ,nothing pressing here to do.

Jane, that is a chore to do all that.  I loved what your granddaughter said!

Good morning on a cloudy but not raining (yet) day from NC.

I thought I would try to get out of the house over the weekend but didn't manage it.  Spent a lot of it reading and resting.  I must go back to the odontist this week and he will determine if I need 1...or 2...more root canals.  It's a good think I really like him since I am seeing so much of him.   ;D

I'm sorry for those S&F friends who are dealing with health problems and happy for those who are doing well.  I'm thinking especially of Joan and hoping that she is well enough to make the trip to Georgia.  Stress about the move probably isn't helping her either.

With the terrorist troubles in London I'm worrying about my younger son and dil.  They are in Denmark on a cruise through the fiords.  I'm sure they are safe and enjoying themselves but I'm a mother so worrying is what I do best.   ::)

Take care, Everyone.

JaneS

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I'm also hoping that our Joan is feeling well enough to travel.  The sooner she gets settled in her new place the baster she'll get back to her old self.  And we love her "old self".

The dogs are telling me that our "waiting time" for Annie's pill is just about up and they're ready for a real meal.  So I'll go take care of that and then I'll get dressed and put the laundry in the basket in the washer so it's out of my "dynamo's" way.  Then I'm ready for her.,,,I think!

I just heard back from my grandniece...the one who is going to college near me.  She has her schedule for the upcoming year and is willing to dog sit for me in September so I can visit my daughter in Texas.  Since they will be taking me to the airport, I'll leave my car for her to use and she'll commute between classes.  Since they already know her and love her, this is an ideal situation.

I thought that was pretty forward thinking of Kiran to realize that if I couldn't drive, she could.  She's only 10 and smart as a whip.  Bet you can't tell I love her!

I'm off to start my day!  Make yours a good one.

Good morning everyone, another rainy day here.  I know I am not the only one but I am so ready for sunny days, even if they are cold. Could not get in here earlier maybe Cox is slow today.

LLOYD  I wonder if you are right. I am beginning to think that with so many young doctors they are not comfortable with us seniors.

CALLIE  before I have any dental work done I have to take 4 antibiotic capsules. That is because of the shoulder replacement.

CAROL  this is the second smart an Android that was even worse for me.

GLORIA de  if my shades were down all day I don't think anyone here would even notice.

JANE  I love TLH solution is you cannot drive when she graduates.

AMY  raining here again, too. Cold, too. Just was a weather report that by Sunday it will be 78°.

PHYLLIS  I think it is normal for us to always worry about our kids and grandkids. I know I sure do.

LLOYD  too many things for you to do. Just do what you can safely do.

JANE  wonderful you will not have to worry about a sitter for your fur babies.

I've been here twice this morning already & sure thought I had something to say.... but realize I said it over in Photos.   :idiot2:

Going to be a scorcher today, started out very humid & had to leave the AC on all night.  Does not do well with my head but better than getting up stuffy.  I don't like hot weather.... gee.... think I have mentioned that before.

Had a call from #1 son, already in Salida and says the mountain tops are "super snow covered".  Looks like lower elevations will be in the 80s so plan to stay up high.  Younger son & I plan to drive out later in the week.

Jane, good that TLH will remember the time you spend with her these younger years and "pay back" with love & "she can drive".  You deserve special thoughts from her.

Prayers for all the people traveling and those living where terrorists are running amok.  (I Googled that word since it came up highlighted, I spelled it amuck, is a difference).  We need to quit being politically correct and tolerant of terrorists and any religion that condones and suggests such actions.  It is time such religions clean their own houses if they want to be accepted in this world today.  I know, shut up, Shirley~

Good Morning Everyone!

Beautiful morning here.  I sat on patio and had first cup of coffee with my girlfriend, Lady, she is such a loving old thing.  If I quit petting her she stands there and whines till I would start again, that is until my wife came out with the cookies, then she wanted nothing to do with me so long as the cookies lasted.

JaneS, you just gotta rub it in, about the three baskets for 5 dollars.  But we did, okay my wife did, buy some fresh cherries at the grocery store, those things are B I G and sweet as sugar.  I could have eat the whole bag.  But I didn't.

Got an appointment for Thursday for PT evaluation at Warm Springs rehab hospital.  So I can get started and see if I can get some strength back in my legs and back.

Boy the grass in my yard is really starting the grow with this rain.  I got the fertilizer down just in time.

Tisie, you are making me jealous talking about the cool mountain weather.  I know you are going to have ball with the boys.  I can picture you pushing food setting around the camp fire at night.   :)

Everyone have a great day.

Do you ever have a job that you keep putting off, one that is not demanding or heavy work but drag your feet to do??
My friend passed in 2012 and I am just tacking the job of throwing out old papers/bills etc that he had kept. Some brought back wonderful memories of the fun times we have had. I all the years years we had known each other from 91 to 2014 we never had a cross word.Him and his lovely wife felt like family to me. I know he is happy now as he is with his wife who passed in 96.to know a love that they shared is a blessing from God.

Hal, both these girls have stomach love too. They aren't going to like me this afternoon as I want to clip their nails for them. One just lays and let me do it while the other she can put up a fight.

Shirley, I loved camping, food takes on a new taste and sleeping in the fresh air is better than any sleeping pill. I also agree with Jane don't shut up......oh my you hit the nail smack dab on the head with that statement.
It is time such religions clean their own houses if they want to be accepted in this world today
Maybe the world would be a better/safer place to be.

Gloria, I just picked some leaves off my cucumber plants that had  fungus on them from all the rain.  Heard on our news last night that the corn crop will be 2 weeks late due to the weather.

Better go rustle up some lunch..
