Shirley, Don Creamer died in 1974, and my sister in high school dated his son, so Creamer's is relatively new in the scheme of things. His sons had other paths to explore other than dairy farming, and Don had loved to watch and feed the birds in his fields. So, this was a good fit. He created the Refuge, willed it on his death to the city, and if its use changes, it must legally revert to his family, who is legally obligated to continue the Refuge as willed.

Shirley

Kyle is right! I got chilled to the bone the one day & didn't think I'd ever warm up. We have lived in Kansas wind since 1960 so you'd think I was used to it. Always had to wear cotton next to the skin, layer of wool & then nylon to stop the wind. One year I bought the kids corduroy coats for winter & when I got ME one I realized what a mistake I made. The wind went right thru the fabric.

Patricia, sounds like the people in charge have to respect the will, good for all. I hope they put up a big brass plaque in his name, such a great gift! I love that you have "history" in Alaska, not just a newcomer.

Good morning...

Tad chilly here this morning with the temp sitting at 0°F thankfully the wind has died down.

A day of rest here ,a bit of sewing may get done. :)

Jane, bet you are enjoying your time with your family and will enjoy the rest afterwards.

Patricia, are they sure about that??? :))

Shirley, Rogers and Voltaire  didn't mince words.

Gloria, your sons keep a good watch over you.

Clocks went forward and I want to go back to bed...hmmm  maybe a nap later on.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  As usual, I'm first up and even Cooper hasn't followed me!  I'm having my coffee and relaxing.

AMY, about getting up earlier...maybe just go to bed tonight at the usual time...in your head, not on the clock!  My dogs used to do that for me.  They didn't abide by Daylight saving time!

I'm not sure what the plans are for today but I'm ready for breakfast whenever they all get up.  English Muffins, Bagels, eggs, bacon and cheese sandwiches with coffee!  Christy always helps cook and the grands do the dishes!  Works out fine!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning everyone. Goodness was still dark when I woke this morning. Only clock I had to change. I had a surprise with both sons showing up yesterday morning. One changed the battery on the clock on the wall in the kitchen, I cannot reach it and then changed the time and battery in my alarm clock.

PATRICIA  the 18 it is here now would feel warm to you. Must admit I am beginning to think global warming is here. It has been several years since we have had temperatures below zero. I remember back in the 1950s when there was a lot of old cars on the roads and in winter they had something they put into the oil in the motors and that was plugged into an extension cord from the house to make sure the cars would start in the mornings.

SHIRLEY  I used to want to travel this country and see places I heard or read or seen pictures of. Never made it and if my daughter had not married a man from California I never would have traveled much more than 200 miles from home. I went to Ca. every year on my vacation and one year they took me to Arizona and I would have loved to stay there. Now they are living there and I will never get to see where they are living but I know they both love where they are and the peace and quiet and everyone is friendly and ready to help each other and refuse to take money for anything they do. They figure some day they will need help and others will help them.

JANE  I remember how my 3 room apartment felt when my daughter and family came to visit for a week. It was a happy time for me and enjoyed cooking for more than just me and at least one day I would have everyone together and always lived where there was a back yard so had a cookout. Had a great landlord and family so they were invited too. They came to meet everyone but did not stay long. Once they left to head home my 3 rooms seemed so big. The 2 boys would pick a spot out of the way for their suitcases and never left things hanging around.

LLOYD  I do need a nap every day and if I do not get one seems like I am half asleep till bed time.

AMY  when I got off Skype yesterday I looked out and it was snowing hard and very windy, We got a dusting of the white stuff but it is still pretty windy. The sun is shining now but even looks cold out.

SHIRLEY  I grew up in a city and moving to the country was a big change but I do not want to go into a city for anything now. I did not know what to expect the first time we went camping but I loved it being outside all day and sleeping in the tent at night. Cooking was easy and every thing tasted better and clean up was fast.

I gabbed enough this morning so think I will go have my breakfast.

PHYLLIS  if you are looking in have a good day.

Have a good day and stay safe.

Gloria, while I was watching bird tv out the kitchen window I saw it!! Down it came, slowly drifting by the window.......a snow flake. We both know that a snow flake  is just like a rabbit.........there are more about and they multiply! :yikes:

Well, it is a bright sunny morning but it is COLD!  Yesterday was miserable.  Dreary, rainy, and Shirley sent that Kansas wind over to us.  I kept my eyes on the trees in my backyard and watched them bend and sway.  Made me nervous.  The news showed lots of trees down on roads and houses and power lines in this area.  We were lucky here...thank goodness.

Good morning to you, too, Gloria.  I loved Arizona, too.  We spent a week in Flagstaff while we roamed around the beautiful canyons in that area.  Grand Canyon was spectacular but I liked some of the smaller canyons where we could hike down into them and be in some ancient cliff dweller areas.  Fascinating place.  I told Tom I could easily live there....but, too far from family.  I used to live in Colorado so I love Big Sky Country.

Thank you, Amy, for NOT sharing your snow with us.  :)

Time for breakfast and then I think I'll try to reclaim that lost hour of sleep later on.

Take care, All.

Shirley

I'm back from church & breakfast with all that came. Nippy out but not as bad as last few days. I notice the flags across the river are blowing straight out so wind fairly strong.

My 3+ hours sleep isn't enough to a nap will happen. Callie decided it was time to go out but she looks miserable, it's colder than she realized, but she doesn't want back in. Tiger is in the bedroom end of the house & not willing to go out until she is sure I'm going to walk them down to the river, so I'll just join her in the bed!

Gloria, got a deal you can't refuse... I'll swoop around & pick you up "if you ask Regina when it's time for all the wild flowers to bloom out in the desert".... I'd love to be there at the right time. I've seen pictures. We can all 4 mosey around in the motorhome, cook & eat inside or out. Wouldn't that be fun? We can dream, can't we?

Phyllis, you grew up in KS, surely you remember the wind having tall trees going in circles!  When we lived in the KC area we had a storm that had a tornado wrapped in it & I had photos taken back to back of two tall trees going in opposite directions. It helped prove to a man's insurance that it was NOT just straight wind.... so they paid for his roof to be replaced!

Amy, when we lived west of town I always started my tomato seeds in Jan so they would be ready to plant outside by March 17, even if I had to put gallon milk jugs over them. I cut the bottoms out & kept the lids to put on when it got really cold at night. I had the first ripe tomatoes of anybody (Burpee Early Girls, a month before the Big Boys). This year I'm sticking to the different kinds of lettuce & will go to the Farmer's Market for tomatoes.

Jane, "Hi" to all the family, such a warm feeling for all.

Good morning from an Interior at minus six, unusually cold here, another sign of the times. I needed a new vacuum, so I went out with friends yesterday and came home with a new vacuum and a new rug shampooer! Now, I'm broke  ::) until next month, other than odds and ends cash.

I didn't change clocks last night nor yet today. I'll catch the three,  coffeemaker, stove, and kitchen clock when I go in for breakfast. The bedroom clock sometime today, and the rest are automatic. There's nowhere to go today, so it doesn't matter.

For all you nappers out there, I envy you. I need to keep to an early to bed and early to rise sleep schedule, or I get all turned around. If I nap at an odd hour, it comes out of my nighttime sleep schedule.

Amy

Good morning.

We had a light dusting of snow overnight...not enough to dance to.

We are off to the city to pick up a few things, then scurry back home..

Will post more later..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

good Morning AMY and all that follow today. I have already taken my vitils and sent the results to VA.  It is amizing how that machine can talk to on dos and donts and send the results and not be conected to phone line's, just send through the air, and if someington is not right it signals some one at VA and they call me on the phone and tell me what to do. it saves us time and gas $$. hpe you all have a good day just as you like it.

Sunny and chilly here.  Nice to look at from inside the house.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  Cooper was an early arrival again this morning and will be all but one day this week.  Frankie has one odd day this week and she couldn't remember which day it is.

He's been fed. I've been fed and we had a walk and now I have my second cup of coffee.  I had to interrupt my time on line to go get dressed and go out in the cold.  It's not as cold as PATRICIA has it or even as cold as AMY has it but it's pretty cold!  It's supposed to start warming up tomorrow and I hope that trend continues.

The family has all gone home and I'm back to an empty house.  I wasn't in here last night because after everyone was gone, I collapsed and only came to life when they texted that they were home safely.  I went to bed early and even forgot to turn off some of the lights.

LLOYD, that's good that you don't have to get in the car and drive to the VA Hosp. They know if you need care through what you send them.  Sure does make life easier.

PHYLLIS< GLORIA, AMY, PATRICIA, SHIRLEY nice to hear what's new and different in your lives.  I miss you all when you're not here.  I liked Arizona, too.  Several years ago, we had a familt "girl" trip there and I loved every minute of it!

Better get started on my day...it's vegetable soup making and canning week.  Tomorrow morning is an early dr. appt. so I want to get it started so it can simmer while I'm gone and be ready to start canning when I get home.  I'm going to get the meat out of the freezer today and set everything else on the counter including the great big soup pot!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning from an Interior at minus 23 with a projected high of plus ten and the not unexpected news that the cold wave will continue through tomorrow and Wednesday. No fundamental changes are expected through at least the 23rd.

We're having February weather in March. And those skies are cloudless, blue, and cold! The good news about the arctic and the cold is that no real creepy crawlies are able to burrow in and survive our winters, no roaches, chiggers, ticks, fleas, or other nasties.

Our reward is that brief beautiful summer with 24/7 daylight.

I was productive yesterday. I got the new vacuum and rug cleaner unboxed and assembled plus general upkeep.     ::)

I spent most of my time housecleaning my computer files and rearranging and decluttering my computer.  Today, I may even go so far as to turn the new vacuum on.  8)

Shirley

Haha, Patricia, that sounds like the way I operate! I get something new & let it lay around for a while before I attack it!

Rick, I was about to send out an alarm for you... haven't seen you in here for a while. You been okay?  My dumb robins have not discovered those delicious raisins I've been putting on the post out front but the squirrels did. Starting to see different birds migrating thru & now even a case of the bird flu in eastern KS.

Another windy day so will go use the hose to give those early daffodils some water, would be nice to see them blooming for Easter! Hope to get the sprinklers up & running tomorrow.

Better get moving, it's cloudy but don't think rain is predicted until Thursday.

RAMMEL

[Shirley - I'm still here & I'm OK (In some ways  :2funny:  )  I'm still stuck with that old children should be seen and not heard. I've been as busy as a one armed paper hanger doing some legal juggling and getting tax stuff ready (1 month to go).
Our Robin waits for me to go out for the paper every morning and then chatters till I get the raisins out. There's a cardinal around but he's not as secure as the Robin.
Sunny, 50ish and calm today. Nice.  Car is out for inspection today so will go pick it up soon. Hope they didn't find anything wrong. One year it was due for a timing belt so I had to dig deep.

Rammel,on your advice I checked my laundry carefully.  No foreign or unauthorized "duds" appeared.   ;D

BTW....I've noticed in my own backyard viewing of the birds.  Cardinals are always very cautious.  They will sneak up on the seed only in stages and are always looking around very carefully to make sure it is safe.  That is probably wise since we have Red Shouldered Hawks and Cooper's Hawks visit the backyard frequently.  The Red Shouldered Hawks don't seem to bother the small birds but Cooper's Hawks will prey on them.

Just adding a comment..Rammell. I would try putting the raisins out in my yard...but afraid the squirrels would run all other birds off...I love when my blue jays come and last summer saw a green jay...and I have the red birds also....they are all singing today..it's warm and spring like....

patricia19

All of you are making me jealous...it's gotten up to plus one on its way to a high of plus ten.

Shirley

Rick, it was so funny to watch our robin build her nests so she could see the front or back garage door for when I went out with the scrambled egg, hamburger & honey-wheatberry bread.  She would swoop down when I went out, eat a few bites for herself & take bite after bite back to the nest to feed the babies. Now & then she would let her mate (we called him Toto, shades of Wizard of OZ, but in reality he had only 2 toes on one foot & struggled to stand) come eat with her. He came with her every migration the last few years & I think he did know she died. She sat by the front door (I could see her from my sink window) all day & went into a deeper sleep. When she finally fell over I stood watch so no cats came to get her & finally went out & put her body in a little box & buried down by the river. She had been with us for 8 years of photos so was a good friend. If you put short pieces of string out & robin picks it up, probably a female building a nest. Oh, the way we first noticed her was we put a tray out (remember those old TV trays on the long brass legs?) Had the tray part on the ground to feed the baby mallards & this robin kept showing up eating their cooked rice & leaf lettuce that was in water in the tray. Ducks needed the water to slurp up. She decided everything was better dunked! We would toss her a little piece of bread & she'd dunk it! We don't have to have vehicles inspected in KS anymore. Wonder why....

Had another round with the motorhome today, went out to turn it on to get mileage & no kick to the battery at all. That's a heart stopper, but this vehicle has another way to start with different button.. it uses the auxiliary battery & one push & started. I ran for quite a while but by the time Andy got here to check, battery back to about half what it needs to start. The worst part is I always put in Walmart batteries so they can be replaced where ever I happen to be & they don't have any, she checked all over & seems China is holding out????  Well, they haven't had a delivery of batteries for a while. That is super bad news with spring break in KS & MO (that I know of) & lots of people will be wanting to take the kids on a trip since everyone is tired of being home... & will be in same boat I am only I don't HAVE to go anyplace until it is replaces.

Well, I've worn me out today, picked up the sweet gum balls that fell since a few days ago, had a whole little basket full. Wed. is our warmest day this week so plan to wash my car & motorhome (poor motorhome is actually muddy from dust with a few sprinkles) & car has the salt & whatever the liquid is they put on streets, from the last snow. I have trouble "multi-tasking" these days, seriously, start something & finish or find I forgot to end the task. Which reminds me, I left lights on downstairs in 3 rooms, went down to turn on sprinklers so Andy could check them out. Need to make another trip down to off them.  ::) Need to eat & nothing sounds good. I'm hungry for junk food but don't go out after dark.  :-\

JaneS

Long, Busy day and I'm worn out.  And I have to be up and moving early tomorrow.  Cooper will arrive about 6:45 and I have to be ready to leave by 7:30 for a Dr. appt.  So I'm heading for the haystack!  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  And may God bless us, every one!
