The article was fascinating! Did you know that Alaska has volcanos and volcanic fields, more than any state, and many more than Hawaii? Of these, about ninety are still active and might be expected to erupt again.

I haven't been to Great Sitkin, not many have as it sits at the end of the Aleutian Chain, far out to sea. The one I've sailed past and flown over as many have is Sitka's Mt. Edgecumbe. "On Kruzof Island, about 13 miles west of Sitka, Alaska, sits Mt Edgecumbe. The extinct volcano is 3,200 feet in height and covered with snow about eight months of the year." It has recently had some new activity. "UPDATE April 23, 2022:

Satellite radar data from the Alaska Volcano Observatory indicates that there has been steady uplift since 2018 in a large area to the east of the Mt. Edgecumbe crater, "consistent with an intrusion of new material (magma) at about 5 km (3.1 miles) below sea level."

The Alaska Volcano Observatory on Friday (4-22-22) released new information which appears to confirm that the recent earthquake "swarm" under Mt. Edgecumbe (4-11-22) is the result of volcanic activity, rather than the background tectonic activity of the Queen Charlotte Fault.

An analysis of satellite radar data over the last year shows significant uplift over an 11-square mile area just east of the Mt. Edgecumbe crater — totaling almost 11 inches. The deformation has been occurring at a steady rate of over 3 inches per year since 2018, and "there has not been an increase with the recent earthquake activity."

"The Queen Charlotte Fault runs offshore Southeast Alaska, almost perfectly straight, for over 500 miles.

It's a rare geological feature – called a "leaky transform fault" – where the North American and Pacific plates continually slip past each other.

Because it's a plate boundary, the Queen Charlotte Fault is deep, extending down through the Earth's crust and into the mantle. Thousands of years ago, the movement of the fault opened a conduit in the crust, and molten magma pushed through and formed the Mt. Edgecumbe volcano.

Dr. Gary Greene thinks that the April 11 earthquake swarm indicates that the process may be underway again.

"When magma starts heading towards the surface it re-melts the rock that is there and it fractures that rock and the fracturing is what causes the earthquake," said Greene. "So as the magma starts to move up into the crust and and gets closer to the surface, you start getting these, these low magnitude earthquakes, which were experienced last week (April 11). And then it can shut off, which it sounds like it has now. But it can start again any time and if the fault moves some more, it can cause dilation again and then cause more magma to start reaching up towards the surface."

Greene is retired from a long career with the US Geological Survey. He's an emeritus professor at the Moss Landing Marine Lab at San Jose State University, and he holds a research faculty position with the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Lab.

But his specialty of late has been mapping the undersea Queen Charlotte Fault, and the Mt. Edgecumbe volcano is a product of that fault. The Queen Charlotte is tectonically active, and reliably produces measurable earthquakes – which usually propagate laterally along the fault.

The April 11 "swarm" was located under the mountain, and the quakes appeared to migrate upward from deep in the crust to shallower depths. But like his peers at the Alaska Volcano Observatory, Greene says it's too early for dire predictions.

"The good sign is that this might just be a hiccup," said Greene. "It just started and there wasn't much pressure below, or much dilation, to cause this thing to really start to break towards the surface in an explosive event, but it also could be a precursor to what may occur sometime in the future."'

Good morning..

Perfect morning out there ,sun shining and temp is cool 35° but will soon warm up.

A trip to the lumber yard for more material to make trugs. Then I am going to work in the garden before the bugs get too bad.

Shirley,I had forgot that Tom passed. You must find a big difference with just only one now. What a great life they had though..I am just mixing in new soil (top dressing) and some sheep manure to get the trugs ready to plant. A man should be picking his two up today, one 4' left yesterday as a Mothers Day gift.

Jane,I bet you and Margie had a lot of laughs! David is off to Mounds OK this week.

Better get a wiggle on..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning! It's echoing in here this morning.

Amy

Gloria, may the day get better for you...

Patricia,I heard your echo!
Working out in the garden may have to take a fleece off and put on a lighter top!! Birds are singing, red squirrel is driving Jesse nuts but all in all a great day.

And I'll add my gripe to the list. This was the day to open the RV, extend the slide & have the awning roll out, all to let the rain collected inside all that stuff drain out. BIG problem is the awning has an auto setting that will close it if too windy so can't put it out which defeats the purpose of the whole job.

That is one "sorry" for today & the other biggest problem is I can't get the lawn guy on the phone to see if he remembers doing my yard last fall... I screwed up royally when I got this last guy so desperately need to get another lined up. I've asked opinion of #2 son about buying a "zero turn" riding mower (the John Deere in my shed it too big for me to handle) but was reminded that I'd still have to trim & with it in the 90s this week, something I know I can't deal with. Had my first heat stroke at 18.

In Sam's yesterday a lady was manning a display of the yard "robo".... but she didn't know much about it & since I saw both sons yesterday they reminded me that "still need to trim". I won't let them mow since both have yards to take care of & keep theirs pictue perfect.  The other gripe is the AC/heating company that installed & has been doing maintenance twice a year... can't come until June 3.... and I never turn on furnace or AC until they've checked, oiled, changed filters, etc...  but did do it just now & house already feels cooler (and is).

I fixed the "bloom stuff" with Brita pitcher water & watered my new pots of petunias & the hibiscus. I may need to move the pots later but today is too windy so need to keep them from blowing over.

It is lunch time, Tiger already fed so I will eat & maybe take a nap before starting work outside. I'm watching a robin running around on the pool cover, water is high enough the worms are floating & robin is having a ball. The cover says not safe for adults to walk on but the cats loved it & birds enjoy after a rain. Water can flow through but only when it is low enough the cover doesn't touch. Need to get the cover taken off & drain down at least 6-8 inches. I do not love a pool but it is here!

patricia19

I'm jealous, Shirley, of your robins and greenery! We're in the midst of our fourth rainy day, and even though it brings flowers, I wish all that rain would go away! And take with it our current 36 degrees!

Mitchell Expressway at the corner where it joins Richardson HWY is closed due to flooding, as is Barnette Street and Cushman, both located close by rivers.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I'm having a good visist with Margie!  We're doing lots of rememebering when!  And we're laughing a lot!

I think we're going to take a walk to the post office to mail her ballot for the upcoming election pretty soon.  I hope all your problems get solved and your days are beautiful!  I'll be back when I can!  Have a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

It's beautiful today....in the low 60's and sunny.  Yesterday was gloomy and drizzley but I had a nice day, anyway.  Nice cards from family and spent the afternoon texting back and forth with younger son and dil.  They are cruising in the Hawaiian islands and then will be sailing to Vancouver and then take a plane back to home.  They say they are having a wonderful time and really like Hawaii.

All is well here.  Take care, All.

When I have trouble falling asleep, which is most nights, I pretend I'm a coma patient who can hear those quietly speaking around me. Sometimes this helps and often not if used too often in succession.

I just watched this Ted Talk where a man has used light drumming to tapping exercise nightly and gone from perhaps four hours to seven and a half hours of sleep nightly. He explains that the brain recognizes, likes, and follows regular rhymic patterns. He used nodding your head to music as an example. Perhaps his actions might help you sleep.

I want to see if it works for me.

I had issues with my iPad and Bob had to clean it out and reload.  Good news is it fixed the issue but the bad news is it dumped a lot of my saved things and I've had a terrible time getting in to my STUFF like Seniors and Friends. 🤪🤪

We are staying with the grands again this week. This s the last known time we will be needed here.  School will be out soon and we won't need to stay here as we do now.

I had a wonderful Mother's Day, and I hope all the mama's in here did as well. Three flower deliveries so my home has been smelling like a florist shop and making me smile🥰🥰

Take care and be safe EVERYFRIEND.

Good morning  everyone. another pretty cold one for May. Got a surprise, the heat is still on, I turned the thermostat up to see and the heat came on. Feels so good. So glad I did not put my winter robe away when I did all the winter clothes. Could it be the witch is getting older and is beginning to know how we elderly folks feel cold more than the energetic younger ones.

RICK  a little late is better than never.

PATRICIA  that was my empty brain making that echo sound yesterday. Had a good CNA yesterday, wish I could have her the 2 days I have the lazy one. That one likes sitting with her eyes closed. Every time I see that I come up with something for her to do. I no longer have her massage my back, it hurts more after she tries but the worse is I have to tell her every day she comes to go wash her hands. She always holds them up and looks at them and says they are not dirty. I ask if she touched anything on her way into the building and she says yes. I tell her they are dirty with germs and she will not wear gloves like the others do, make her hands sweaty.

AMY  yesterday was so deceiving here. Sunny and bright blue sky but very windy. The CNA said when she got her she thought she would get me outside for a walk but changed her mind with some gusts more than 45mph. KYLE is keeping busy with those trugs. Sure has no time to bet bored. Is his village buildings all finished? Would love to see that all set up.

JANE  I am happy for you being with your sister and enjoying it so much.

PHYLLIS  as long as it is sunny the days seem better than days of rain and gloom. I rather see it snow, at least that  is pretty to see. My older son and family went to Hawaii a few years ago and loved it and then sailed to Vancouver and flew home.

JENNY  I am still waiting for my grandson to come and finish getting this new PC all set up and he started that on December first last year and here it is May

LLOYD  at times I have nothing to say but still manage to post something just to let everyone know I am still alive and kicking or complaining.

CALLIE  how is Miss Oklahoma today?

Have a good day and stay safe.

Good morning..

Another great day in the making here, the hot weather is also bring out the blackflies. Right now they are just staking out territory and not biting but when they do bite look out! Finished with the back garden ,now to get the front dug and put black mulch down to match the rest.

Gloria, Kyle has finished doing the village buildings and bird house. He has sold some bird houses  but rather enjoys building trugs. Will take some photos for you. I would not tolerate that CNA...wearing gloves is part of her job when she goes into folks homes...she should know that.

Jenny, how is your Dad doing? Is your shoulder feeling better?

Patricia, I listen to Ildivo. Rarely do I hear the end of the cd.

Better get a move on.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Afternoon,  Oklahoma is setting all-time records for high temperatures in May with temps in the high 90's and "feel-like" over 100º.  It's humid and the wind is blowing a gale, too - so not very comfortable to be outside.

#1 son/DIL helped me get plants for the "pot garden" and planted them last Friday.  They were with her family for Mother's Day because her Mom isn't doing well and family is aware that each holiday may be the last one they get to have with her.  I certainly understand that!  I told them that kind of day was better than any gift they could possibly buy me.

#2 son/Dil were supposed to return late Saturday night from a week on Sanibel Island in Florida. However, their flight from Fort Meyers was delayed for over an hour and they missed their connection in Chicago.  Airline provided overnight and got them on a flight Sunday morning but they were worn out by the time they got here and I certainly wasn't going to expect them to "entertain" me.

So Sunday was the usual quiet day for me - and I was/am absolutely fine with that.

And that's what's going on in my corner of the world.

Have a Terrific Tuesday, Everyone.

When I woke this morning at seven, there was white on the roofs and lawns. By eight-thirty, the white was melted, and we're back to rain and 43 again. Today's forecast is for mixed snow and rain, and the skies aren't cloudy; they're white.

Gloria, I'll gladly send you any snow we receive, even the expected trace amounts!

Callie, I'll blame you for our weather, Oklahoma stole all the heat!   :tickedoff:

Amy, music keeps me awake but pretending to be a coma patient "tricks me into fully relaxing" and empties my mind of incessant thoughts." However, it doesn't always work for me. It's sometimes hard to turn off my mind and relax.

Today is part of a deeper clean for my first apartment inspection, Thursday. I don't know if they'll start at the top or the bottom of the building, but I expect my turn will be on Friday or Monday if they run into issues elsewhere. It's the first return to regular biyearly structural inspections since early 2020.

They're also attempting a termed soft opening of the rec rooms on each floor. They stress in their notice that "The social rooms are for residents and employees only." And "ask that residents continue to practice safe behavior in the common areas."They further ask that the "number of residents congregating in the first-floor social room to no more than ten residents or staff at one time." I hope this means they're returning to pre-pandemic staffing.

They further stress that those using the rec rooms make use of  provided hand sanitizers, "Practice social distancing and be respectful of your neighbor's wishes regarding social distancing." They finish by adding if you feel sick, please do not enter the community spaces.

On the one hand, there's management, staff, and residents. If residents want something, then the term independent residency is stressed.

JaneS

hello, Everyfriend!  We've been so busy talking that I just haven't taken time to be on the computer!  I miss all of you and we'll get back together when I go home.  It sounds like you are all doing as well as can be expected.  Keep up the good work!!  Have a good day!

Good morning...

Busy day ahead, first is to take the van in for an oil change then pick up soil and get to work on the garden.
Neighbour called to say that just up the road a momma bear and her three cubs were spotted. A lady heard a noise outside to find all there on her porch!

Lloyd, that will be fun to watch the babies grow!

Jane ,enjoy each day to the fullest with your sister,. We miss you but know you will be back here soon.

Patricia, you may also have some of our heat too! Working outside yesterday was a little unbearable..

Callie, time sure has gave a different meaning to words. Pot, grass and weed are some that have double meanings now.

Phyliss, hope it was an easy fix for your tooth. Our temp was about the same as yours.

Good morning  everyone. Another cold morning here and the heat is still on, glad for that, I turn it on till I s tart feeling warm enough and turn it down and that will be it for the day. Cloudy sky and a chance of rain later and if it starts raining I will have the heat up again to keep dampness out.

PHYLLIS  sorry about the broken tooth. I have the rest of mine to come out but am leary of any dentist now after the last one put me into the hospital with too many antibiotics. Wish the one I liked here had not retired when he did.

AMY  when that lazy CNA got here yesterday I had a bottle of hand sanitizer on the table where she sits and I told her since she does not like washing her hands she better use the sanitizer before she starts or put gloves on. She went to the bathroom an wet her hands I don't know if she even used soap and I always put a clean towel out for them to use and a roll of paper towels-she wiped her hands on her butt.  I really wanted to scream when I saw that.

PATRICIA  we are never told when our apartments will be inspected. The manager shows up with someone else to check every thing. I am not a slob and I dislike clutter. I can no longer clean like is did and depend on the help I get but the 8 hours I get with the lazy one do not help. The last couple of weeks I had her do the laundry-no more grocery shopping for her, she cannot do that right either. I keep light colors together and the dark ones separate from them. I yelled at her this week a white towel came back blue. She mixed up the 2 laundry baskets and a new pair of dark blue capris were put in with the light. She said she always washed like that at home. I asked her if that is why she always wears black.  I so wish my body had no given up on me.

That office must be open by now so will try calling and see if I can get a good worker in place of lazy.

JANE  looks like you are having a wonderful time with your sister. I am happy for you. We will see you when you get home, just enjoy your time together.

Have a good day and stay safe

Good Morning,

Patricia, Oklahoma was probably stealing heat to compensate for freezing temperatures during the past two weeks caused by an Arctic Front.  ;D  ;D

Amy, those different meanings are why I call my 10 planters a "pot" garden - with my tongue firmly in my cheek.  ;)

I'd never use the Ted Talk suggestions because I can't stand repeated noise of any kind.  Wind chimes and dripping fountains drive me nuts!  Also need a dark quiet bedroom to sleep well.

My day is starting out very well.  Dermatologist office called to say that the spot on my ear that was biopsied last Friday is benign.  It's a "Verruca"...a medical term for wart.  I Googled Verruca and learned that it's also called a "senile wart". I could have a lot of fun with that one!  :D

Off to see what kind of mischief I can get into.....

Have a Wonderful Wednesday, Everyone.

Good morning!

Callie, I've always liked your dry wit.

Gloria, we are back to the manager's twice-yearly structural (and housekeeping) inspections with a maintenance man. We also have a yearly smoke and carbon monoxide inspection during which they bring a firefighter and a maintenance man to test alarms. We had a review by corporate in 2020 just before covid that included representatives from the state capital offices and the manager, and a maintenance man. The suggestions put for that time were never followed through due to Covid. The one planned for Thursday is a follow-up and a catchup.

Callie, it has been colder and snowier for the past three years, this year has been especially noticeable for failing to warm. This is a contradiction because you need humidity for it to snow and cold air is dry air.

Man-made Causes of Global Warming
Natural Causes of Global Warming
Effects of Global Warming

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is the phenomenon of a gradual increase in the temperature near the earth's surface. This phenomenon has been observed over the past one or two centuries. This change has disturbed the climatic pattern of the earth. However, the concept of global warming is quite controversial but the scientists have provided relevant data in support of the fact that the temperature of the earth is rising constantly.

There are several causes of global warming, which have a negative effect on humans, plants and animals. These causes may be natural or might be the outcome of human activities. In order to curb the issues, it is very important to understand the negative impacts of global warming.

Causes of Global Warming
Following are the major causes of global warming:

Man-made Causes of Global Warming
Deforestation
Plants are the main source of oxygen. They take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen thereby maintaining environmental balance. Forests are being depleted for many domestic and commercial purposes. This has led to an environmental imbalance, thereby giving rise to global warming.

Use of Vehicles
The use of vehicles, even for a very short distance results in various gaseous emissions. Vehicles burn fossil fuels which emit a large amount of carbon dioxide and other toxins into the atmosphere resulting in a temperature increase.

Chlorofluorocarbon
With the excessive use of air conditioners and refrigerators, humans have been adding CFCs into the environment which affects the atmospheric ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the earth surface from the harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. The CFCs have led to ozone layer depletion making way for the ultraviolet rays, thereby increasing the temperature of the earth.

Industrial Development
With the advent of industrialization, the temperature of the earth has been increasing rapidly. The harmful emissions from the factories add to the increasing temperature of the earth.

In 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change reported that the increase in the global temperature between 1880 and 2012 has been 0.9 degrees Celsius. The increase is 1.1 degrees Celsius when compared to the pre-industrial mean temperature.

Agriculture
Various farming activities produce carbon dioxide and methane gas. These add to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and increase the temperature of the earth.

Overpopulation
An increase in population means more people breathing. This leads to an increase in the level of carbon dioxide, the primary gas causing global warming, in the atmosphere.

Natural Causes of Global Warming
Volcanoes
Volcanoes are one of the largest natural contributors to global warming. The ash and smoke emitted during volcanic eruptions goes out into the atmosphere and affects the climate.

Water Vapour
Water vapour is a kind of greenhouse gas. Due to the increase in the earth's temperature, more water gets evaporated from the water bodies and stays in the atmosphere adding to global warming.

Melting Permafrost
Permafrost is frozen soil that has environmental gases trapped in it for several years and is present below Earth's surface. It is present in glaciers. As the permafrost melts, it releases the gases back into the atmosphere, increasing Earth's temperature.

Forest Blazes
Forest blazes or forest fires emit a large amount of carbon-containing smoke. These gases are released into the atmosphere and increase the earth's temperature resulting in global warming.

Effects of Global Warming
Following are the major effects of global warming:

Rise in Temperature
Global warming has led to an incredible increase in earth's temperature. Since 1880, the earth's temperature has increased by ~1 degrees. This has resulted in an increase in the melting of glaciers, which have led to an increase in the sea level. This could have devastating effects on coastal regions.

Threats to the Ecosystem
Global warming has affected the coral reefs that can lead to the loss of plant and animal lives. Increase in global temperatures has made the fragility of coral reefs even worse.

Climate Change
Global warming has led to a change in climatic conditions. There are droughts at some places and floods at some. This climatic imbalance is the result of global warming.

Spread of Diseases
Global warming leads to a change in the patterns of heat and humidity. This has led to the movement of mosquitoes that carry and spread diseases.

High Mortality Rates
Due to an increase in floods, tsunamis and other natural calamities, the average death toll usually increases. Also, such events can bring about the spread of diseases that can hamper human life.

Loss of Natural Habitat
A global shift in the climate leads to the loss of habitats of several plants and animals. In this case, the animals need to migrate from their natural habitat and many of them even become extinct. This is yet another major impact of global warming on biodiversity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is global warming?
Global warming is the phenomenon of gradual increase in the average temperature of earth . It is caused by the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs etc. into the atmosphere.

What do CFCs stand for? What is the role of CFC in global warming?
CFCs stand for chlorofluorocarbons. Ozone layer is responsible for protecting the surface of the earth from the sun's harmful radiations. CFCs destroy the ozone layer of the atmosphere. This makes the way for the ultraviolet rays to reach the earth, thus, increasing the temperature which leads to global warming.

How does global warming affect climate change?

The change in climatic conditions is a result of global warming. The burning of fossil fuels, cutting down of trees etc. causes the temperature of the earth to increase. High temperature changes the weather patterns, causing the dry areas to get drier and wet areas to get wetter. Thus, increasing the frequency of disasters like floods, droughts etc.

How can we control global warming?

The release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is the major cause of global warming. It can be reduced by setting a high price of carbon, increasing the biofuels production from organic waste, use of renewable energy like solar and wind power, safeguarding forests and improving energy efficiency and vehicle fuel economy.

Good evening everyone...

I got my 4th Covid shot today,  and so far, all
is well.

Patricia  I listened to the Ted Talk and
will be trying it when I go to bed tonight...

And I will  keep trying it and see how it works.

Since I tend to get up a couple of times a night,
perhaps it will help me to get back to sleep easier
each time.     If I am not careful,  I have a hard
time slowing my brain down,  so perhaps this will
stop that from  happening, or stop it when it is
happening.

Thanks A LOT  for the good advice.

How did you make out???
