A TV program I watch weekly is Under The Radar - Michigan and all the programs feature cities and/or areas around the state.  Last night was about SE Michigan (south of Detroit) and one of the cities has a Pacifier Tree and there is a kind of ceremony when a child is ready to give up their pacifier.  The whole thing, including ribbon, is put on a branch of a special tree in town.  Hm - makes me think of the Shoe Tree near Kalkaska MI where people (probably mostly kids) tie the laces together, then throw the shoes up into this particular tree.

Sandy, I live in a border state too - Canada (Ontario), Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.  Actually, we border Minnesota too up by Isle Royal.  And if you count Lake Michigan, we border Illinois.

Dot and I went out to lunch today with the intention of putting some flowers on Norm's grave and you would not believe it was Maintenance Day at the Township cemetery and we could not get in the cemetery.  Of all times to keep people out!  It's not too far from here so we will try again.

In the early 1950's I used to go over to
my Grand Mother place in the city of
Portsmouth NH...

I remember seeing her "Ice Box" which sat in
the back hall.   The ice man would come every
week (I suppose) and fill it with big block of ice.
(In the Summer more often, and not so often
in the Winter.

She also had a big black wood stove sitting right
in the kitchen and did all her cooking on that ..
and boy could she cook.....  donuts were a big
favorite  and pies etc etc.
There was a coal furnace in the basement that
heated three floors up.    The house had two large apartments...with cellar, two floors for living and an
attic for storage....

How much fun we had going up in the attic to find
"stuff"  from the good old days,  way back then.

We had nothing more to do back then... with
only a radio and an old phonograph
(with a dog on it)...   Loads of old 78 records.

I am glad that I lived thru these ages that came
before the internet took over and everyone has
their own cell phone.

I really wonder what is next,  because there
is always something new right around the
corner....  I will try to keep up
as long as I can.

Another day bite the dust! Picked up my tomato plants this morning plus a few seed potatoes and multiplier onions then home to stack wood. Hubby helps and we got all 4 1/2 cords piled. Then I thought the garden should go in as it sure feels like rain on the way so that job is also done all but the zucchini. I forgot to pick some seeds up!
The lilacs are out and the smell was just beautiful....

Jane, hugs, you will feel better after catching some zz's. Those standing trees are too green :)

Shirley the house sounds heavenly to me...I can't imagine what it would cost today using the same wood as I doubt you could get it in the size needed. That is so sad they let the house go, such a shame. We have heated the outside when I have put on too much of a fire .. ;D

Going to put my feet up...enjoy your evening everyone..

Sandy, I knew only one grandmother and by the time I came along, she was a companion to other women, cooking etc for them so I have no idea how she cooked, although I am sure she used a cook stove too.  My folks had an oak ice box that was kept in the back  hall.  And, yes, the ice man came whenever Mother put a card in the window with the card showing how many pounds were needed.  People were more trusting in those days and we left the back and front doors unlocked until night, so when the ice man came, he brought the ice in tongs and walked in the back door and put the ice in the compartment.  We also had an elevated oven gas stove until a friend moved to our neighborhood and preferred her old stove, so we got the one in their house and was more modern.  We had a spinner washer because Dad was afraid Mother would get her arm caught in a wringer.

Another quiet day for me.Some times we just have to pull back and relax. I did walk our garden, and did have my leg checked out according to Dr.s orders.....all is well.

Prayers are on-going for our dear Pat. I wish she would come in and post more often. I so enjoyed all she used to tell us about her dog Geordie. He was a jewel of a good pet.

I had a good lunch downstairs today, with good friends. A rich potato soup, a huge tuna sandwich, of which half is waiting in my fridge for supper. Then I plan to go downstairs at 6:30 to watch a program of Victor Borge on the big screen t.v.

One of our 100 plus ladies died today. She had been a missionary for many years, and always wore such a loving smile. She will be missed. One of my lunch buddies is 103......hard to believe. She has a smile that lights up a room.

Larry, have you ever shopped on the computer? Amazon is a great place to easily find things like the eyeglass chain you mentioned. I love the place.

Sandy, Fe gets cuter and sweeter looking as time passes. She could be our "Miss Personality".

Time for me to finish the huge tuna sandwich I had for lunch, along with some potato chips and some apple juice, and then it will be time to go down to watch Victor Borge. I love these old timer shows. June

Good morning everyone..

Not my idea to get up this early but dogs thought differently..........cat nap later I hope!

Have laundry on the go but don't think it will be hung out as they are calling for rain and tstorms for the next two days. Hubby's meds will be ready today so we will pick those up in town along with bird seed.

Larry, I do have an electric stove with the glass top that I use in summer but I prefer my wood cookstove. My neighbour had two wood stoves one in her winter kitchen and one in her summer kitchen along with her electric stove.

June that was a delicious lunch and supper for you!!

Carol, the beaver would cut but I don't think he wants to do anymore . :)

Time to go feed the dogs

Good morning Everyfriend!  Today has to be a better day than yesterday!

AMY, my dogs decided to hit the trail early this morning, too.  So while we waited for the pill time to elapse, I hit the couch.  And I slept soundly for almost another hour.  Now I'm READY!

Cathy is supposed to text me when she gets up.  She's heading for the Amish store this morning and I'm going along.  I don't need a lot but there's always something I can add to my supplies.  Right now, I'm thinking seriously about a Hoagie for lunch!  Anyone want to join me?

Can't think what I'll be doing today other than vacuuming the closet floor in my bedroom.  I pulled everything out a couple days ago and it's hollering for attention.  And while I have the sweeper out, maybe I'll just do the whole floor.

Now the doggies have finished their breakfast and they'll want to go out again and see what the bunnies are up to!

Enjoy your day Everyfriend!

Good morning everyone, 65° tp start the day. From what I just heard on local TV we might be in for thunderstorms tonight and much cooler tomorrow.  Oh well this is New England and weather is hard to predict.
In Roger Williams park in Providence every Memorial Day week end they set up a service men-women boot with a flag in it and a summery of the person who wore the boot. They have more tham 10,000 boots there and it is a beautiful sight to see. It is all set up by volunteers. Last year someone stole some of the boots.  Some people have no respect at all.

CAROL  my daughter was close to the border when they lived in San Diego. The last place I worked there was a lot of Hispanics and a few Asions. They were all good workes and all worked on on speaking English even when talking together. They came into the states legally.

SHIRLEY  glad someone liked that Three Presidents. I do not remember who sent that to me. Sad to see a beautiful well made house neglected. When I lived at my son's house it was about 120 years old. Wass a rooming house at first for a mill. That mill is now condos. A lot of small rooms that my son took down walls and made bigger. Blocked some stairs and made a room over them. Odd going into the basement and seeing stairs goind to the ceiling. I had stoage on stairs that went up from below and were blocked at the top and it made great storage for me.

This state borders Conn. Mass. and the Atlantic. You can drive from the northern border to the Atlantic in an hour or more depending on the traffic.

JUNE  wish I was there to see that Victor Borge film. He was one I always enjoyed.

LLOYD  hope you slept well and had some happy dreams.

AMY  my Mom had a big cast iron stove that they had converted from wood to an oil burner. Living in a city is was hard to get the wood and a place to store it. In summer she would do most cooking for the day and shut it off. Then at supper time she would light it up again to cook the meat or what else had to be done then. I think now and wonder how she did her canning on hot summer days.

JANE  I would love a Hoagie or a Sub or Grinder as we call them here.

Have a good day.

A definition of globalization
that even I can understand and to which
I now can relate:

Question:
   What is the truest definition
of Globalization?
Answer:
Princess Diana's death.

Question:
   How come?

Answer :

An English Princess with an Egyptian boyfriend
crashes in a French tunnel, riding in a German
car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian
who was drunk on Scottish whisky,
(check  the bottle before you change the spelling), followed closely by Italian Paparazzi,
on Japanese motorcycles, treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines.

This is sent to me by a Canadian, using American Bill Gates' technology, and
you're probably reading this on your computer,
that uses Taiwanese chips, and a Korean
monitor, assembled by Bangladeshi workers
in a Singapore plant, transported by Indian
truck  drivers, hijacked by Indonesians,
unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen,
and trucked to you by Mexicans who
are in the US illegally because the current
president, born in Kenya and educated as a
Muslim in Indonesia refuses to enforce
US law.

That, my friend, is Globalization !

Hi Everyone.  We had another rainy day yesterday and expect more rain today.  The lawnkeepers haven't been able to take care of the lawns this week as it has been so wet and the yards have really grown as they do this time of the year.  I plan on picking up a prescription at Walmart this morning, stopping by the fruit stand for more strawberries, sweet corn and peaches and then if I still have any energy left I will go to a meeting.  I plan on watching the golf match later this afternoon.

June, I do a lot of shopping on the computer at Amazon and other sites.  I did check out the eyeglass chain but knew I could get one at Dollar Tree for $1 to try out before I spend a little more for a nicer one.

Amy, thanks for info on your cooking stove situation.  I don't remember us ever having a wood cooking stove as I grew up and certainly not since Pat and I have been married.  I do remember the old icebox but Dad had to get the ice from town as there was no delivery to the country.

A lot of good interesting posts from you all since I posted yesterday.  I am going to pretty much take a bye this morning as soon need to leave for my morning activities.  However, I called Walmart and as I feared the prescription had been filled for nitro tablets rather than the long lasting patches.  So I give up and will wait until I see the doctor.  I do have plenty of the fast acting nitro on hand in case it is needed.

I hope everyone has a good day and that Pat Scott Halbach isn't suffering too badly today.

Mary Ann

Gloria, the inference in the Globalization piece is that the president was Obama, who has provided a birth certificate from Hawaii and I doubt he was educated as a Muslim (that I don't know).

Good morning Everyone. to me, this feels like the day that wasn't. I woke up weird and tired at five a.m. Pills and patch and albuteral have all been injested plus two cup of coffee and an oatmeal cookie but the body and mind are still in outer  space.

I am praying for painless healing for our heroine Pat. and all others that need God's special touch, including myself.

Gloria, Victor Borge had me in stitches for an hour. I wish there was more of his style of talent.

My body and mind are closing shop, so I'll quit till later. Hugs and love, June

GLORIA, your Hoagie/sub/grinder is in the Hidey Hole.  I hope you like Italian because that's what I got.

I also got some more of the sweet chili carrots by Birdseye.  They were on sale 4 for a dollar and I couldn't resist!

Now I better get on with my day.

LARRY if you were here, I'd give you one of those doodads for holding glasses.  I just found one in drawer that I bought and I couldn't get used to it.  It's a chain with a rubber ringy on each end.

Take care, my friends and enjoy your day whatever it brings.

Well, the laundry did go on the line , then I washed some fabric to use in quilts and it is now on the line.

Jane, I was forever forgetting my glasses when I would go into a store so I bought one of those to hold my glasses. Works great too  as long as I remember to put it on :)

Better get back and see what mischief I can get into. :)

A good Saturday HELLO to all on this Memorial Day Weekend.

We are going to get mighty hot again today, may even break a record.

JANE, I am sorry I missed out on getting a Hogie from the Amish Store today.  May I put in a bid for one the next time you go, please?  IF Amy has not already eaten hers maybe she will give me a bite!  I always smile when I read you are going to the Amish Store as I know how much you enjoy it.

I join others in wondering how Our Pat is doing after her hip surgery?
She knows we all have her in out thoughts and prayers.....and she will post to us soon❣️

We have no plans for the holiday weekend, other than going to the cemeteries to visit and put flowers on the graves of our loved ones.  One of my most precious memories is of my grandma cutting beautiful flowers out of her garden to take to the grave sights of our loved ones.  She took lots of flowers and water and we made a day of it.  If I could only do one grave....it would be hers!

I wish EVERYFRIEND a wonderful day of peace and joy.

What a nice memory you have of your Grandma!  Don't forget to share it with your kids and grandkids.  My grandkids love stories of my mother and grandmother.

On Memorial (Decoration Day) when I was a kid we went to Grandma's house in Bonnots Mill, MO, where there was a gathering place near the old Mill that was on one of the street, opposite end from Grandma's house.  (Grandpa died the week of my 2nd birthday). It was called a "park", big enough for the guys to play baseball when the ladies weren't having a picnic.  Only tables were the ones that held food, everyone brought food.... nothing like fried chicken & all the extras made by women that grew up learning to cook by the time they were out of diapers!  Mostly French & German, Catholic & Methodist.... and I was related to everyone! We sat on the ground on quilts, everyone brought their own.  The food was so good I still hope to make a trip back for an October Fest in hopes some of the young still make the same food 75 years later!

The week before Decoration Day Mom would cut the peonies, lots & lots, to put in the old refrigerator (after WWII when we got a new one, not really new but one Dad repaired that someone else discarded).  The cold of the frig (Dad took out the shelves so the peonies could stand up in the bucket of water), Mom thought "set" the blooms so they lasted longer.  The cemeteries were separated by a wire fence on top of the hill.  Long before the cemetery down lower flooded out when the Osage River was high.  The grown ups cleared all the weeds & cut grass around the tomb stones, not sure if anyone mowed any other time, some families took flowers often.  All of us kids did what we could to help and listened to parents tell about each person as they trimmed around the head stone.  It wasn't a sad day, everyone was so happy to see each other, and the adults told tales (sometimes funny ones) about the underground family.

I go to MO at least several times a year and only once did not take flowers of some kind, fresh or artificial with little decorations for the season or holiday to my parents graves.  In MY world, they know and smile when I show up, kinda like the hugs I got when I came in the front door long ago.

This year, like the last few, I will not visit my husband's ashes or grandbaby buried in a different cemetery on Memorial Day. I go when it is quiet, not the huge display of flags and flowers and streams of bumper to bumper cars slowly moving through the grounds.  The grounds are beautiful but nothing in comparison with all those people in "good" work clothes that share food before gathering to look after loved ones.  I wonder if the locals still do that............

Mary Ann

What a beautiful picture you paint, Shirley.  I envy you because I've never lived close to relatives to even take part in a reunion.  Now, when our family gets together, we have a reunion because we're all there is.  I do have relatives in Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota, but the older ones are all gone and other than the Indiana family, I don't know those in the other states (except one first cousin).  With families spread out as they are today, I wonder if many families have reunions and/or get-togethers.  Maybe that's why I have such a great interest in genealogy - to get to know my ancestors!

Mary Ann

Denver

Oh, lucky me!  I just finished one of the Hogies, JANE, and it was better than I could ever imagine.  How thoughtful of you to think ahead and get extras!

JANE and SHIRLEY, I love old family traditions and so wish we could continue them.  Part of the problem these days though is that families seem to be much too busy to partake like we all used to.  At least that is how I have found it to be in my family.  Now days our kids want to get with their friends and do things.....  we do of course all get together for occasions but it is not an understanding that we do the same traditional things year after year.  Visiting our family graves is one of them..... I have to admit that it makes me feel sad.

It has clouded over and our temps have dropped some.  Not sure if we will get any moisture but it sure would be nice if we did.

We are off to Walmart to pick up a couple of things.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

I'll be off to Dreamland in a little bit.  I had to watch TV with the sound turned way up and all the doors and windows shut so I could drown out the fireworks.  My dogs are terrified of fireworks and the plaster themselves to me as close as they can get.  And Annie pants the whole time they are going off.

Last year, we were almost asleep on the Fourth of July and someone nearby started shooting them off.  Both dogs were awake and panting and pacing.  I thought they were all finished but someone must have had a few left over.

I hope you all have a peaceful night.  God be with you@

Good morning everyone..

Again, not a time I wish to be up but once awake I am up. Birds are starting their song and with a light rain overnight there is a scent of lilac in the air. Wouldn't you know it both dogs went back to bed...lil stinkers!

A day of rest here, other than empty and refill the hot tub nothing else is planned. Very little work for me other than running two hoses to empty and one in to fill after I wipe it clean. I meant to do this yesterday but just ran out of steam.

Jane ,the Border collie does not care for fireworks either, the other one is going deaf and doesn't pay much attention to them. I was going to take a page out of your book and try for another hour of sleep but Mr Robin is singing hit head off ! Hope that is the end of the fire works for you.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Good Morning Everyfriend...and a special Good Morning to you, Amy.  Our dogs must be kindred spirits because they hit the floor early this morning, too.  And going back to bed this morning is not an option.  ..

We also had light rain overnight and it's managed to cool things off a bit.  I'm afraid the fireworks aren't over yet.  We'll have them tonight and tomorrow night as well!  Some people seem to think that it's not a holiday if it's not LOUD.

I did find something that helps.  There's a natural thing called "Rescue Remedy".  I found out about it from my sister who has a friend who is an Herbalist.  You just give the doggies a few drops and the panting stops.  I get it at the local health food store.   It's actually meant for people to ease tenseness but it works for the doggies.

I'll be off to church this morning and then I'm taking a bouquet of flowers to my favorite veteran and his wife....my parents.  No huge gatherings, SHIRLEY but I try to visit them for most holidays.

Enjoy your day, Everyfriend.  Make it your own!

Last time she hoped right up on a chair between hubby and I .

Hi Everyone.  We actually start the morning with some sunshine.  It is suppose to get to 81 degrees today and around 5 pm on thought the evening the chances of thunderstorms increase.  I did not feel up to par yesterday and even though I had a very good nights sleep last night after going to bed at 8 pm I am already pretty worn down.  So I am not going to go to Sunday School and Church this morning.  I do have to make a quick trip to the grocery store for an Angel Food cake and a couple of other items for this afternoon.  Pat tried to fix one yesterday in the Instant Pot as she had gotten a special Angel Food cake pan to use.  However, it turned out a disaster and very flat so she wants to fix one in the oven.  Today is Elizabeth's birthday and she and Jennifer will be out late this afternoon for a little surprise party for her 20th birthday.  We will have cake and strawberries and I don't know yet whether Pat is going to try to fix a meal but I hope not.  Other than that I just plan to rest today.

Yesterday afternoon, Judy (Pat Scott Halbach's sister] posted the following in the Christian and Friends discussion:  I was talking to Pat this AM, she is doing well.  She was up during the night to go to the washroom, and is in much less pain with her left side than she has been in for some time. Except for getting up to the washroom she slept through the whole night. The weight of the bedding was too heavy however that is an easy remedy.  She said the pain was like a dull headache.  Now comes rehab.  There was talk of her going to a rehab facility for about 6 weeks, that will be good as she is alone at home.
Thank you everyone for praying. Please continue to pray for continued strength and rest.

June, I have always enjoyed Victor Borge and just a few days ago watched a YouTube video of one of his concerts.  He had quite a sense of humor but always was a fine concert pianist. Sure hope today finds you feeling better.

Jane, Italian subs are my favorite and usually what I get at Firehouse Subs.  I think my eyeglass chain is probably very much like yours.  Mind isn't actually a chain but rather like a fairly think shoestring with the rubbery tips on the end.  Is firing fireworks traditional in your area for Memorial Day?  I have never heard of that.  I see you did provide more information on the fireworks in your posting above.

Amy, do you only use cotton fabric in your quilts?  I ask because that is the only fabric Pat uses in her quilts.

Jenny, my mother always had peonies, irises and perhaps some other flowers to cut and we always sent to the two cemeteries where both hers and my father's family were buried.  I now my sister has decorated my parent's grave when they have been in the area and I expect they are there this weekend as my BIL's mother passed away not too long ago. So many of our families are now so far spread out in different States that it is difficult for many to attend a reunion.

Shirley, the October Fest and all the food sure sounds good.

Mary Ann, when I was growing up we always attended the Hall reunion, which was my mother's family.  She had a lot of relatives and it was a pretty big affair.  Since I have become an adult I have only attended the one family reunion I organized a few years ago in Denver and one in Missouri for a different branch of my mother's family.

Gloria

Good morning everyone, 57°. After 2 days up in the 80s today right now is supposed to be the high. Rain at times and not nice on a holiday week end. Friday was in the nid 80s with a breeze but yesterday the humidity came in and the mid 80s again. Of course I only went out yesterday for about half an hour and came in and turned the AC on. Oh well we cannot have the weather we want, Mother Nature does what she wants.

LARRY  hope you get that prescription straightened out.

MARY ANN  I did not write that piece on Glogalization, it was sent to me.

JUNE  Victor Borge could really play the piano great but he sure can make fun with his playing and remarks.

JANE  the Italian grinder is the only one I ever get. Every thing but the onions. Thanks.

AMY  you and my daughter do laundry. She told me yesterday hers was dry before second load was done so she hung the second batch and folded the first load. The dry air and the wind her wash really dry fast. I wish I could hang mine out but cannot reach up to pin the clothes. There are clothes lines in the back and someone is always using them.

JENNY  not many visit graves on Menorial day these days. I doubt the younger generation has ever gone.

SHIRLEY  I had a job geting used to calling it Memorial instead of Decoration. Same with Veterans day instead of Armistice day. My family is scattered alll over the country and impossible to get to.

AMY  no scent of lilacs for me this year.  My son who has a lot of the gushes only had a few flowers this year and he wife picked all of them. When we had those darn gypsy nith caterpillas a few years ago they killed a lot of trees and bushes. My other son lost almot half his apple trees and again this year only a few that bloomed.

JANE  I have been to different homes where their dogs were frightened by fire works and thunder. some wanted to be close to their owners and others would shake and others would try to get under a couch. Sad to see them like that.

Have a good day.

Hats off!

The colors before us fly....

But more than the flag is passing by....

Sea fights and land fights grim and great,

Fought to make and save our state

Weary marches and sinking ships

Cheers of victory on dying lips,

Days of plenty and years of peace;

March of a strong land's swift increase;

Equal justice, right, and law,

Stately honor and reverend awe;

Sign of a nation, great and strong

To ward her people from foreign wrong:

Pride and glory and honor,-all

Live in the colors to stand or fall.

Good Sunday morning.   It is pretty here right now,  but supposed to get thunderstorms later this afternoon.  I guess we will be having an indoor picnic.

Larry, glad to hear that Pat Halbach is doing well.  She is a strong lady, so I feel she will bounce back well.

It took me all day yesterday to get things ready for our picnic.  I have to sit and rest every once in awhile,  so it was almost midnight before I was getting done. Since the dishwasher was already full,  I had to leave some large mixing bowls in the sink. Didn't particular like  waking up to that mess, but it is all straightened now and I  just need to finish getting ready.  My son is coming about 12:30.

I am so looking forward to seeing everybody.  It will be quite a gathering.  So anxious  to see all the little ones.

Have a great Sunday.

GLORIA, I learned that poem in fourth grade and can still recite it whenever I'm reminded.  It starts out....

Hats off!  Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums.
Hats off!  The colors before us fly...

(then all the rest of what you wrote comes and it ends...)

Hats off! The flag is passing by!

That was back when we learned a poem a month and had to recite them in class.  This was one of my favorite school activities!

I've been to church, stayed for coffee hour and then picked up 2 bouquets of daisies to take to my favorite veteran and his favorite wife.  Of course, I mean my parents!  And I noticed something today that I never noticed before.  One of my high school teachers is buried about 6 graves away from my parents.  He was a veteran of WW2 so I gave him a salute, too.

Now I'm going to loaf the rest of the day....unless something comes up that's yelling for attention!

I hope you are all having a Happy Holiday...unless you live in another country.  Then I hope you're having a restful day!
