CallieOK

Good Saturday Morning, Everyfriend,

Have been reading the posts while I've recovered (almost) from a sinus flare-up that hit Big Time ten days ago.  Ragweed pollen was high and I've been miserable.

About 5 days ago, a tropical something-or-other parked itself over the metro area and the rainfall has broken all kinds of records.  No storms - just steady rain.
I hope that's settled the pollen.

No other news from this corner.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

Shirley

I also have a little German in my background and only picked up a word here & there, but some cousins have been visiting where our gr-father's parents came from and discovered the German language they had so carefully passed down... was only spoken in one small town that was secluded from the more modern world.

Lloyd, I totally forgot you mentioned this trip, so glad you are okay.  Did you drive the motorhome or your car?

So far I have nothing to show for the day & it is past noon, so I'd better get a move on.  We had a cool night but starting to get a little humid. I need to turn the pool pump on & clean it up again.  Leaves are starting to fall into the water so takes more work to keep it up.  We never liked to close it until danger of a hard frost, easier to clean up in the spring.  This year I bought another cover & already paid for putting it on so better work!  Supposed to keep leaves out but have my doubts about how well it will keep the blowing dust off the bottom.  Yes, it is a pain in the neck but I can't move the cats.   :crazy2:

Yes, Larry, I really do think the cats worry about me since I am the only human they trust, they don't act like they even remember their mama... (Callie).  They don't hunt much anymore so I am their source of food and protection.  When they leave the pool area they aren't gone long, come to which ever door they can see me & will hang out there, if they don't want to come in.

Amy, I have a package of "chewy chocolate chip cookies" but they don't compare with home made.  I'm just too lazy & know I would make a pig out of myself.  With "store bought" a couple will satisfy!

Sincere sympathy for the sinus issues, Callie... over the top here as well & mine are to the "how about a headache?" stage. We've also had days of rain, no run off, soaking in, but certainly is holding the pollen closer to the ground. Think it is supposed to end & start heating back up.  Take care.

By the way, when we lived in England 2 little retired nurses took this young 19-21 year old under their wings & insisted I try using Vaseline over my baby's nose & forehead, NOT VICKS... it worked like a charm & we've used that cure ever since.  Amazing, I sometimes use a hot cloth over after spreading it on to speed up the soaking in. Makes the head drain like Drain-O..........good to see you.

Gloria

Good afternoon everyone.
Tried getting in this morning but my mouse wouldn't work.OK new batteries needed. Couldn't get the batteries out of the mouse, not easy like most are but HP always have to be different. Have to open the top instead of the bottom. Only had 1 AA battery and need 2. I knew my son was coming around noon so called him and he was almost here. OK waited till he got here and even he had a problem getting the batteries out. Then he went and got batteries for me and put them in. After that we talked for awhile and this is where I am as soon as he left.

MARY ANN  sounds like your jar opener is what I had. Opened all size jars and so easy.  I meant to call my grandson to see if he was still an Amazon prime member but he was not home and now he is at work.

JANE  I always had trouble opening jars and bottles, even the Ensure I drink every day. One of my CNAs has to loosen the covers  to last me till the next CNA comes. I wonder where I bought the one I had under the cabinet, then I would not be able to screw under one here. At least I could hand some family pictures after getting the OK from the witch.

CAROL  at times I have run the jar lid under hot water and some will loosen enough that I can use one of those rubber jar openers.

MARY ANN  the cans now with the tab to open the lid I cannot do. If the bottom of the can is normal I open it with my electric can opener. If not I have to ask someone to open them. I never have much strength in my hands.

SHIRLEY  my Mother was born October 17th and to me she was the best most loved and understanding person I ever knew. I had one sis in law that often said she loved my Mom more than her own mother.

JANE  I am too little and too weak and can no loner stand straight and stretch to the second shelf in the cabinet. I am no longer the 98 pound weakling Mary Ann mentioned but an 80 +pound weakling. Wish I could get my appetite back. Anyone know of anything?

JUNE  your good night wish last night worked for me,
had a good 8hours last night.

AMY  I am going to the hidey hole to see if there is still a couple left. Home made are the only kind for me.

JANE  Nice and cool here today, too.68° now and
no sun at all today.

LLOYD  OK now what bed were you sleeping in that your own felt so good last night? Where have you been? Hope it was not in the hospital again.

LARRY  I have not ordered that jar opener yet, with I had the one my son got rid of.

LLOYD  I was wondering if you were at that wedding. Sure a long ceremony especially in a language you do not know. Glad you had a good time.

CALLIE  you make me glad I have no allergies. The ragweed and goldenrod here now are bothering some of the tenants here. They carry boxes of tissues with them.

Have a restful rest of the day.

June Drabek

Callie, sorry to learn the ragweed got the better of youl My brother and I suffered at this time of year back in So. Mn. from what my Mom called Hayfever. Constant sneezing that just wore us out. Breathing through a wet washcloth helped me.

Larry, we are having  a return odd high heat in some So. Cal areas…like Hemet, my former dwelling. Stanton, my place now, will be 89 for a high..a surprise. I eat a banana almost every day . Our main dining room has large helpings of bananas, apples and oranges where we can help ourselves, 7/24. also packages of three graham crackers. There may be a need for Potassium in we old folks.

Time for me to go down for lunch. I have already been out on the glider and reading, now home to you folks,  but time to scoot down for more food.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

June Drabek

Gloria...me too.....a perfect nice sleep. I didn't even need a trip to the John. woke when my medicine girl came at 6

What a beautiful day!! Laundry blew out nice on the line ,dug my potatoes and had some with supper. Made bread and put some in the hidey hole and gave one  loaf to my neighbour. She phoned and said they were home , I said meet me at the fence :) We will look after their dog and cat tomorrow also, they are the ones that look after our dogs when we need help.  I thought I would be able to do some pies but just ran out of steam..another day..

Gloria, with the pop can pulls (and other cans), I usually have to put the flat part of a spoon or fork under the pull to lift it.  Then I put the handle of a small wooden spoon in the hole and lift the thing up to where it will open the can.  Tom has gotten so he will open them for me now, but he does much for me that I feel I can/should do myself.

Thank You AMY:   Amy:  My personal Go To Girl - our own GOOGLE GAL - thank you for all the research to did for lazy me...  regarding noninflammatory recipes.  This is all for a son & wife - son is visiting for a week soon with doctor appointments set-up and he says he feels better since going on this special diet.  I am to be taking cooking lessons for a few recipes - our DIL is going to show me what they think is good.

Amy:  We rented an apartment in Minnesota (before children) and the owners lived upstairs.  I was allowed to use their washing machine but not the dryer.  Everything froze online and barely dried.  Still, I put linens, pillows and stuff out on a rack here but at least it is sunny even when cold.  Do you grow rhubarb?  If so, I am coming.....

Larry:  Hockey is my favorite sport - basketball, and baseball.  Not so with football ever since the pampered few decided to protest our flag.  The baseball hit went 505 feet for a record - it looked like it stayed in the air forever.

Gloria:  We rarely see Gliders anymore.  They are soothing to the soul.

Off to church tonight - this is the more quiet service and is fine with me too.  My week ahead is totally full and I am having the quilters over one night as the other gal has to work late.  They all like ice cream so anything with it is easy.  Sherbet for one of the quilters as she cannot tolerate the dairy products.

Mary Ann:  Those pull-top cans can be difficult and you have to be careful not to cut your fingers........

Mary Ann

Carol, you're right about the pull-top cans and so far I've been lucky.

I don't know if this will work but I'm going to try.  This is the dodad I have for opening pull tabs on cans.  It works great and even with my weak hands I can operate it.  It's another thing my niece gave me when she was selling Pampered Chef but this is from Amazon.  Here goes....

https://www.amazon.com/Brix-J-Popper-Ring-Pull-Pull-Opener/dp/B000GFOIWA

After I close, I'm going to try it to see if it works for me.

JaneS

It worked for me!  It has a tooth thing to put under the ring to raise it off the can and then you put it through the ring and roll it back over the can.  The lid comes off perfectly.  I love it and every time I use it I say "Thank you Suzi!"

I "fork" those pull top cans....      :2funny:

G'morning all. Another fine day here 'so far' so I thought I would go for another 'Arm Chair Walk' this time around Ely Cathedral with the Bald Explorer, the Cathedral dates from1083 and was granted Cathedral status in 1109, that about all  know, there is more about its history in the 'Thumbs' Right hand side of the home page, hope you enjoy the walk Gloria, at least, it is all on the flat !.  ;),hope you all have a good day with weather to match.

Good frosty morning everyone..

We had our first frost last night, Golden girl is out four feet in the air rolling in it!! I hope that whatever bothered our dog and the neighbours dog has been killed off with the frost. We have our first fire on ,just to take the chill out of the house, temp is 62 ° in here :)

Today is a day of rest, the folks that bought the other van are coming today to pick up the winter tires for it.

Will make an appointment this week with the dentist, think I lost a filling :(

Roley ,thank you for the walk !

Enjoy your day everyone.

Hi Everyone.  It is another bright and sunny Sunday morning here in South Carolina.  with a predicted high of 92 degrees and a 20% chance of some showers.  Our State is in a state of emergency in preparation of the anticipated Hurricane bearing down on the Carolina's later this week.  Yesterday was a pleasant day and it seems I managed to keep busy all day.  I will go to Sunday School and then plan on coming home and getting Pat so we can go back to Church.  Then we plan on going to Zaxby's for a nice salad with with fried chicken on it for Pat and grilled chicken for me.  It comes with a piece of Texas toast and makes a very filling and good meal.  I plan on watching some football this afternoon and having a restful Sunday afternoon.

Lloyd, I have to agree with Nancy as a four hour wedding seems very extreme but obviously that is a big deal in the Amish community and not being able to understand what was said made the situation worse.  Glad you enjoyed the trip otherwise. Our wedding took no more than 30 minutes and it has lasted a very long time.

Jane, perhaps a good things your grandfather didn't interpret those words when he got angry.  :)

Mary Ann, the shopping experience is sure changing with the wide acceptance of buying using the computer.  We still pick up our prescriptions but fortunately the pharmacy is right at the front of the store as we enter so not much walking.

Callie, sinus problems, especially sinus flare-ups are every unpleasant when one's face aches.

Shirley, has anyone swum in your pool this year?  I guess it will soon be time to close it up for the winter months.  We have gotten the stored baked cookies at Costco a couple of times and they are delicious.  The packages come with an oatmeal raisin, pistachio nuts and white chocolate and a chocolate chunks cookies and I am ashamed to say they don't last very long around here.  They are big and moist and just delicious.

Gloria, one of the mice I use with my laptop I find difficult to get the batteries in and out.  Fortunately it has a little plastic strip under the batteries that I can get hold of the end of and pry them loose.  We have used rechargeable batteries for a long time and it seems I am always recharging some of them.  We seem to have a lot of things that require batteries.  You need to eat more or you are going to blow away in a stiff breeze.

June, glad you are not in that heat in Hemet but 89 is still hot.  It is good for us to eat a banana often.  They are easy to digest also.

Amy, did you have a good yield from your potato patch.  You very much remind me of how my grandmother and mother used to cook and garden and were always busy with something.

Carol, glad your son is feeling better from a change in his diet.  You may discover a new way of eating.  :)  You can have my portion of any rhubarb you locate as I can't tolerate the stuff.  I agree that the protests have also dampened my enthusiasm for pro football but suppose I will still watch some of the games as at least it is something live happening.  I did enjoy the Clemson/Texas A&M game last evening as it was a good one.  Fortunately Clemson won and had to pull for them since they are a South Carolina team about 70 miles from where I live.

roley, I will check out the new Armchair video a little later as it is now time for me to leave for Church.

Gloria

Good morning everyone  51° on my outside thermometer this morning. I know I grabbed my winter robe then I got up and it feels good. Another cloudy day here with no sun but no rain either.

JUNE  I think I would scream if anyone woke me at  6am. Heck we are retired and and deserve to wake when we want and go to bed when we want.

AMY  i was always busy when I was younger but not like you are. I envy you your energy.

MARY ANN I have  tried everything. even what  you do but I still cannot open them,no strength left in me for much of anything.

CAROL  I will join you in raiding the rhubarb, these days if you see it in markets it is too expensive and usually not that fresh. There is a 2 seat covered glider in the back yard here but I do not get on it, too unsteady to try getting on it and only a few here use it.

JANE  thanks for the link, I think I could handle that. Nice to know I am not the only one with weak hands. I really have to get in touch with my grandson to order this and that jar opener.

PETER  it is hard to think of building being so old as that Cathedral when here few are 200 years old. The USA is still a baby country compared to England. I will watch this when I finish here, thank you for another armchair travel.

LARRY  in this mouse there is a blue plastic thing that has to be pulled up to get the batteries out. I would never be able to do that. I wish I could eat more but after a few bites I am full.

Have a great day.

Gloria, my daughter added me to her membership.... get the free 2 day shipping with Prime but I don't get the videos & movies that she gets.  Had to prove it to her by letting her download one to mine & I got the charge on MY bill.  My whole set up is connected to her Prime but is entirely MINE..... meaning it gives me the advantage of 2 day free shipping if the item is Prime, but no other benefits like she enjoys & I would never use.  I don't watch movies on my computer & have DVDs to watch in the RV so don't even need wi-fi for that. She says she is allowed 5 family members to her Prime... expect some have their own Prime to watch the movies, etc.  Anyway, ask & maybe you can get hooked ordering like I did.

I rarely buy if not Prime, not JUST the free shipping but having to way forever.  This last floater I got for the pool was free shipping & I forgot to notice it was not Prime, so it took about a month to come from China & then it was NOT as advertised, almost a toy in size/comparison.  I thought when you went back over your "orders" & it said, "buy it again"... it would be identical to what you bought before.... WRONG! Wasted my money but not worth the trouble returning.
   :crazy2:

JaneS

SHIRLEY, are you saying that you buy on your own account and use your daughter's prime for shipping?  How is that possible?

Jane, I do the same thing.  My daughter added me to her Prime account.  When I order something, I order under my name and credit card number. It works.

Shirley

Jane, she added my name to her Prime.... she says up to 5.... not sure how  we worked this out but MY computer, MY account that after first using my credit card, I started adding the gift cards to my account & let the credit card get outdated... shows only my gift card balance now, & I never keep too much in but add gift cards if I want to buy something more expensive.  Reason for not too much is when Cas died, he had a couple hundred in his account... Amazon said I could have only $100, so before I closed his account I spent the money, knew his password & used his computer... got that money, all but a couple dollars.  He was also on her Amazon Prime account. All my kids & grands like to have Prime so they can get the videos & movies.... Hope it works for you.... and that she isn't just telling me it's free but pays a fee to have me on.  I wouldn't put that past her, either!   :smitten:

My opener arrived, have not taken out of the package but will report after trying.  I went to Sam's Club to buy the cats a chicken, got an extra one to de-bone & freeze for when I don't want to make the trip.  I got up about 3:30 am, no nap as yet so will take a nap & hope to wake up to walk the kids down to the river before dark.  My life works around their schedule. I did vacuum the pool after church & breakfast with the kids.  Not too hot then but heating up now.  Will be one more cool night with door open before warm nights again.  Off to la-la land.............

Yep, Mary, that's how it works for us....

Mary Ann

Tom is on his son's Prime account.  When I want something, I tell Tom what I want (give him an Amazon picture), he orders it and I pay him.  I am sure he uses his own credit card.

Mary Ann

JaneS

I asked my daughter about it and I think she must be checking it out....maybe after work....because she hasn't answered me yet.  But if it's possible for us to do that, she'll find out.  When she wants to know something, there's no getting away from her.  Thanks for the info!

Jane, now you know why my husband used to say that my "eyes glowed when I saw a sale sign".  Spent a lot of years figuring the cheapest way to buy or do anything.   I know I would not have been as "frugal" as he was (never knew when he got a raise, went right into savings)... but I am enjoying spending it with the kids now.  He enjoyed saving & watching it grow in the bank, not a priority with me, but grateful I'm having a chance to enjoy it MY WAY.

I've told my kids that I'm not dedicated to giving to my grands, they can do that... My aim is to do for my kids, they worked from the time they were 14 (to pay their own car insurance.... a decent looking clunker we bought for each because we moved them out in the "boonies" & after school activities & jobs called for a vehicle to get them back & forth.)  They had to pay for their own insurance (liability only) and gas, but Cas helped, taught them how to work on them & change oil.  They all graduated college "with honors" & got good jobs, they earned every award & reward they got.  2 retired already & sitting pretty, but I have a chance to do the extras with them & love it.  Old habits of pinching pennies doesn't die... No regrets, I feel like every day I did what I thought was best for that day.  I still pinch pennies any which way. Glad our 2 "merry Marys" are backing me up on this... thanks, girls!

Gloria, I cannot believe I am saying I am cold. I woke up during the night and put the spread on. The open window opens to the East, so a cool breeze was coming in. I  have been sleeping with just a sheet. At the beginning of the week, I was complaining about the heat,

I too, have trouble opening everything, even a paper pull cap.  I can not squeeze a spray cabmn, s I have gout in my 2nd, finger. Bas shoulder, so cannot pick up 3 lbs.  wow is me so many, complaints. To thin when I was 35, I looked someone that was 70 and thought them old Here I am on my way to 95. If I make it!

Gloria de, this morning when I got up at 7:30, it was 55 degrees outside and 68 degrees inside.  I turned the thermostat to 72 degrees and waited for the furnace to come on.  I had forgotten to switch to Heat and finally came "to" and did that, the heat came on and I've been comfortable ever since.  I doubt temps will be so high I'll need the a/c - unless high humidity sets in.

Gloria De. Just hang in there because I like company.  I too remember when I thought 80 was a very old person but now looking at 97 next figure to come up.  Hope you are not having too much of that heat I have been reading about.  Here we are approaching Spring but have not seen a daffodil yet.
I am now getting used to living in Aged Care by have to say I miss my garden although we do have nice places downstairs to visit or on the top floor which is called Tree Tops as there are so many beautiful trees to look to.

Mary Ann

Junee, it's good to see your post.  You're heading for 97, oh, my!  I won't have another birthday until next year.  Gloria De is a couple months older than I am and June Drabek will be 94 in November.  I hope we all can keep you company and I'd like to see you hit 100.  My family thinks I'll live forever but I doubt that and I really am not anxious to hit 100 myself.

Keep it up.

I'm not close on the heels of any of you 90+ gals but at my last checkup my dr told me she gives me at least 2 more decades.  When I asked her if she realizes how old I'll be in 2 decades she glanced at my chart on the computer and said, "looks like 103 and I'm not taking back my prediction".  I'm not sure I want 2 more decades but what will be will be!

I'm off to Dreamland.  I wish you all a peaceful night and a good tomorrow.  May God bless us, every one!
