Good Sunday morning, Everyfriend.  There's assorted mini muffins to go with your coffee or tea.  I wish ALL a blessed day.

Thanks to Phyllis for her very cute graphic creation which we are using this week.

Chuckles

Softball Team

As the manager of our hospital's softball team, I was responsible for returning equipment to the proper owners at the end of the season.

When I walked into the surgery department carrying a bat that belonged to one of the surgeons, I passed several patients and their families in a waiting area.

"Look, honey," one man said to his wife. "Here comes your anesthesiologist."
Food For Thought

What is Truth?
(by Chris Long)

Truth. An interesting word. People throughout history have been claiming that A is true, B is not true, etc. Often times it is in the context of religion and morality. So how can we know what is true and what is not true? And just who is telling the truth? Is there even such a thing as truth?

I have found that many times when someone reads or hears something that is claimed to be Biblical truth, or God's truth, they will respond back something along the lines of the following:

"That may be your truth, but how dare you say it is God's truth."
"You have your truth, I have my truth."
"How dare you judge? You should look at what Jesus said about that and about loving people."
"Truth is whatever you want it to be."

Yes, even the word "truth" conjures up some pretty strong opinions among many people. For many, it is a word that implies intolerance and hatred.

And so, today let us look at "truth".

But first a question for you:

Do you believe the first verse of the Bible?

It is Genesis 1:1, which says:

"In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth."

Do you believe this?

You may wonder why I ask this...it seems kind of odd in a discussion about "truth" doesn't it?

It has been said that if one believes Genesis 1:1, they ought not to have a problem with the rest of the Bible. This is indeed to be so. If you REALLY believe Genesis 1:1, then logic dictates that you ought to believe the rest of the Bible as well, correct? If not, there is a problem somewhere, right?

If you believe Genesis 1:1, then what are you basing that belief on?
If you don't believe Genesis 1:1, then what are you basing that belief on?

"The moment you begin to ponder the essence of truth, you are brought face-to-face with the requirement of a universal absolute - the eternal reality of God." - John MacArthur

See, either you and I believe that there is a God who made this world, made us, and has given us His word, or we don't.

That is step 1.

If we believe it, then that means we are acknowleding that there is such a thing as "truth". We are acknowledging that there is a Being, greater than us, who made everything and has say over everything. If we really believe that, then that means that this Being, who made the world and humanity, is the perfect standard of what is right and what is wrong. If we are willing to acknowledge and really believe in what Genesis 1:1 says, then we, by extension, agree that there is One bigger than us...outside of time, greater than humanity since He made the world....in this case, we acknowledge that whatever He says must be true. That there is such a thing as "truth" and God is the standard of it.

What often times happens is people will say they believe Genesis 1:1, but then they say they don't believe (or agree with) certain things that are taught in the rest of the Bible. There are many people in this land who do say they believe Genesis 1:1, and often they also believe certain other things such as Jesus' teaching on love and not being "judgemental". But these same people don't believe or agree with what the Bible says about lots of other things, especially when it comes to teachings related to right and wrong, sin, judgement, hell, Godly conduct, the nature of life, and more.

Bring up what the Bible says about homosexuality, for instance, and all of a sudden you are being "judgemental", not being "loving", etc.

Can we not all agree that if someone says they believe in Genesis 1:1 that by logical extension they ought to believe the rest of what the Bible says as well? It is completely illogical for someone to say "I believe and agree with Genesis 1:1, and book A, book B, but not verses 3-20, not book C." There is a great contradiction with someone that says that, right? Because whatever it is that causes you to trust Genesis 1:1 as TRUTH (there's that word again) also should cause you to trust the rest of it as truth as well, right? If you're persuaded that Genesis 1:1 is true, then you should be persuaded the rest of it is true as well, with no conditions or excuses (i.e. "well, I don't agree with the rest of it because it wasn't translated right", "I don't agree with what it says because people take it out of context.", etc.) Either the Bible is God's book to man and teaches us truth according to God's standard, or not. It has been said that "One truth from the Bible is worth more than all the wisdom of man."

Shortly before Jesus was allowed to be put to death, the following exchange took place as recorded for us in John 19:37b-38a:

"Jesus answered, 'You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.'

'What is truth? Pilate asked."

And right after asking this, the Bible says Pontious Pilate went out and allowed Jesus to be handed over to be put to death (even though he said he couldn't find Jesus worthy of such a thing). But, see, Pilate didn't know what was truth or not. Jesus tried to tell him. Jesus tried to tell him that He testified to the truth and that Pilate should listen to Him. Jesus, God's son, the One that the Bible tells us pre-existed before time in the Heavenly realm, that the Bible says holds all things together and in Him all things consist (Colossians 1:16-17). He tried to tell Pilate to listen to Him because He knew a thing or two about truth.

But Pilate didn't. Pilate wouldn't. Instead, he rejected what Jesus said because he didn't want to believe. He refused to believe. Instead, he threw up his hands in unbelief and couldn't see how Jesus' truth could be more or less real than what anyone else says is true or not.

And you know what? Some things don't change.

Many today ask the very same question:

"What is truth?"

They hear the truth of God proclaimed to them and instead of believing it and accepting it as true, they - in one way or another - say: "What is truth?" And usually with a bit of sarcasm to it. That certainly is how I hear Pilate saying it. Because then we see that because he wouldn't accept God's truth proclaimed to him, that he rejected Jesus (and thus God) by allowing Him to be brutally flogged, mocked, and finally crucified.

Because Pilate wouldn't take a stand on what was true, He ended up allowing Jesus Christ to be put to death, without any valid cause at all.

Many read this story and like to criticize Pilate. But may I suggest, that there are many - even many in churches throughout this land - that if they were in the exact same position as Pilate, would have done the exact same thing? Some things do not change. Pilate didn't allow Jesus to die because Pilate was a mean and "bad guy". Pilate handed Jesus over to be killed because He would not believe the truth of God that Jesus presented to Him.

It was the result of Pilate's unwillingness to stand for God's truth - in his unbelief. It was a result of Pilate attempting to be "tolerant" to all points of view (I can just hear him thinking something like "How can I believe Jesus when this person and that person says differently.").

Pilate had no basis upon which to know what was truth or what was not truth because He did not believe in the standard of truth - Who happened to be standing right before him!

Before appearing before Pilate, Jesus told His disciples:

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Man loves to complicate things. We've been doing it since day 1. The reality is that much of what we like to complicate is actually very simple.

Jesus says that he IS TRUTH!

We are to simply believe God for what He says. It is that simple. And yet, simple belief is the hardest thing for humanity to do.

Why?

Because we are full of pride and want to do things our way. We want to be "in control" - in control of our bodies; in control of what we do or do not do. We don't like someone telling us that we can't do something. It offends us. We want to be the "master's of our fate"; the determiners of right and wrong. We take offense when someone suggests that we really aren't in control - that there is a standard of right and wrong that is NOT determined by us, but rather by the One that made us. This offends people!

It naturally offends us when we read Jesus saying that He is the way, the truth, the life and that nobody comes to the Father unless they go through Him.

Who is this man that he would dare say such a thing??

Well, if He is the Son of God that God the Father sent into the world to save humanity - and that by Him all who believe should be saved - then we can understand why He would say such a thing. We must choose for ourselves: Will we believe this?

C.S. Lewis once said, "I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him, 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the kind of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else He would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was and is the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to."

If we believe Genesis 1:1, then we should likewise believe the rest of the Bible, including John 1:1. In fact, as a fun exercise - read Genesis chapter 1 and then John chapter 1. You might just be amazed at the similarity between the beginning of Genesis and the beginning of John. Jesus is actually called the "Word of God."

Besides men and women wanting to do things their own way, we want to come to God on our terms. We want to believe what we want to believe and then try to force God to accept what we believe as right. We want to do things the way we want and then try to force God to accept it.

Rather than believing in God and what He says, we love to come up with excuses such as:

"I can't believe in a God who would send people to hell."
"I believe in God, but He is only loving and would never judge anyone."
"I believe in God, but I don't believe that [fill in the blank] is wrong."
"I don't believe [fill in the blank] is wrong because people are taking Scripture out of context."

and on and on this goes.

It sometimes amazes me just how vehemently someone will defend their unbelief because they want to come to God on their terms. They want God to be who THEY want Him to be, rather than what He clearly has revealed Himself to be.

"Much of our difficulty...stems from our unwillingness to take God as He is and adjust our lives accordingly. We insist upon trying to modify Him and to bring Him nearer to our own image." - A.W. Tozer

I may be bursting some bubbles, but you must understand, you can be "open minded" and "tolerant" in your unbelief all day long - and even convince yourself that you are the enlightened one - and that all who believe what God says are "haters", "bigoted", "closed-minded", "intolerant", and the like. You can do this if you want. You can reject God and His truth in unbelief.

But if Genesis 1:1 is right and there is a God and He made this world, then you will find out - if not in time, then certainly in eternity, the seriousness of your choice to reject Him and His truth here. If he is the standard of truth and you reject that standard because you want to make your own standard of truth and what is right or wrong, you can foolishly do so. He loves you so much that He gives you the choice to choose Him and His truth or not. And if you don't want Him, He, in sadness, will honor that choice when you breathe your last here on this planet.

God is inclusive. He is inclusive in that He wants ALL to come to Him. But He also claims to be exclusive in that believing in Jesus Christ as the means of salvation is the only way in which we can come to Him and be with Him for all eternity. You can read Jesus' words as plainly as I can. We either believe or we don't.

John 3:16 is a popular verse of the Bible:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

But many people don't know the important verses that follow it where Jesus continues speaking:

"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." (John 3:17-21)

It is so ironic that it is SO EASY for humanity to be saved for all eternity and be in a right standing with God, and yet, it seems to be the hardest thing for men and women to do: to just believe what God has said and stop trying to justify themselves and their behavior before God!

"What is truth?"

The answer is remarkedly simple. It turns out you don't need to spend a million hours in some philosophy class to attempt to figure this out, going down a false trail that will never end. The answer is simple:

God is truth.

He is the personification of truth. It is His very nature. It is according to this that we can see what is right and what is wrong, what is false and what is not. His standards of right and wrong as revealed to us by His Book showcase His truth. I again bring you the statement from Jesus himself (who is part of the 3-part nature of who God is):

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

And now, we come to the next relevant question that all of humanity must answer - the very same question that Puntious Pilate had to answer:

Do you believe?

Hopefully, unlike Pilate, we will be wise enough to let go of our foolish pride, humble ourselves, and with all the faith we can muster, say: "Yes, Jesus. I Believe."

Thought of the Day

"God caused the Bible to be written for the express purpose of revealing to man God's plan for redemption. God caused this Book to be written that He might make His everlasting laws clear to His children, and that they might have His great wisdom to guide them and His great love to comfort them as they make their way through life. For without the Bible, this world would indeed be a dark and frightening place, without signpost or beacon."

- Billy Graham

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It's also "mild" here today...even milder than where Amy is.  Right now the temp is 41º heading for a high of 48 today.  This is my kind of winter day.  We're not going to get the sunshine, though.  It's going to be cloudy all day.  Right now it's foggy!

I hope you all have a lovely day full of whatever you love best!  Make it a good one.  I'm going to!

Good morning, Janie.  It was 75° when I got up and is going down--now 70° and very windy.  Forecast is for rain--and we sure need it.

Cloudy with more rain to come today and the possibility of severe storms.  Hope that doesn't happen.  Joan, are your kids in Alabama OK?  Read in the news about the storms that hit parts of the Deep South yesterday.

Glad you early birds liked the graphic.  In my mature years it is something I have to tell myself often.

No plans for today except reading and a little tv and whatever else mischief I can think up.  I may bake something to take to a neighbor who lost her mother this past week.

Good morning everyone, another gray one here. Rain is supposed to start tomorrow-late morning or early afternoon but looks like it could start now.  This ole Nor'easter could bring 2 or more inches of rain. It will be windy, too. At least I do not have to go anywhere so am happy I will stay inside.

HAL  with the storm due here we are in for winds of 40+MPH at times and might lose power. At least it will not be snow where we would have big drifts. The same places will get flooded and those who live there will be after the state to but their homes so they can move.  Those places flooded before they built their houses----

JOAN  we are all thankful you did not break bones when you fell. You sure do not need more health problems than you already have.

JANE  Molly and Sun both seem to have disappeared.

CALLIE  seems like those programs film for months ahead. There was a contestant and winner on Jeopardy that had died before the segment with her had aired.

CAROL  my daughter sent me a picture yesterday of the snow on the mountains that she sees from her home near Kingman. Easy to see the snowline, they got rain.

MARY ANN  local weather guesser said yesterday that this is the time of year we get the coldest temperatures. Yesterday was over  50°. So much for normal weather.

PHYLLIS  love your graphic for this week So true.

JOAN  mini muffins are great, no guilt having more than 1 and different ones. Better than 1 huge one. Love Chuckles, can picture that happening. Food for thought has a lot to think about. I know I DO believe. Thank you for all today's goodies.

DON  good morning. Hope today finds Bubble feeling much better.

LLOYD  glad you are feeling much better. Now take care of yourself.

AMY  darn vehicles, always something going wrong.

PHYLLIS  seems we both have cloudy gray sky this morning.

Hi everyone.  We have had a very rainy yesterday and all night but it has now stopped and only a 15% chance we will get more before later this afternoon.  Yesterday was pretty much a lost day as I really accomplished nothing.  I seem to be feeling better today and am ready too head to Sunday School and then will come home to pick up Pat for lunch and out to lunch.  Later this afternoon I plan on watching the two Pro football games that start around 4 pm.

Gloria, it sounds like you have school administrators who use some sense.  I didn't hear anything about a problem in this area either.

Hal, I know what you mean about the parade and the commentators.  I had that same comments several times to Pat about how tired people must have gotten and I especially felt for the First Lady in those high heel shoes and all of those steps at the Capitol as well as standing throughout most of the parade.

JaneS, I have Molly's email address and have made myself a note to send her a brief email letting her know we haven't forgotten her and inquiring about her health.

June, you really had a busy day yesterday.  Perhaps today can be one of rest for you.  My granddaughter is in her early 30's.  I think my son will draw the line when needed although he has a very soft and kind heart.  Relationships in a family can become very complex as I expect most of us realize or have experienced over our lifetime.  Certainly no offense taken at your comments.

Carol, glad Don can enjoy classical music.  I enjoy many types of music but must say what they call most music of today leaves me scratching my head as there is usually no melody and it is played so loud.

Jackie, sure glad you have had no more falls recently.

Joan and Phyllis, what a cute graphic of the turtle and a good message on it as well.

Good Morning Don. Sure hope the radio station doesn't find a way to "technical difficulty" your program today.  I was shocked when I tuned in last week to find the young people chattering.

Lloyd, nice to read you are feeling better.  Keep up the good work.

Phyllis, we were under a tornado and severe thunderstorm watch for several hours yesterday but only rain and little wind in our area.  It seems there is a lot of bad weather in different places across the country and more on the way.

Good Morning Everyone!

Wind is blowing like crazy, and did so all night, when I went out to get paper out of front yard I checked tree and no leaves left to come down and someone up the hill got the those free of charge.....

Joanie hope you are feeling better, know it will take a couple of days for soreness to go away.  I remember Sun talking about her oxygen hose always getting under foot.  I wonder how she is doing.  Would be nice to hear from her and Molly.

Got to get with the program and get dressed for church.
Don't think wife is going.

Good morning, Phyllis.  As far as I know my kids in Alabama are OK.  Thanks for asking.

Gloria--Good morning.  They are saying it will very windy here later.  I stepped out on the back porch, and it already felt very breezy to me.  You're right--I don't need any broken bones.

Good morning, Larry.  I hope things work out well with Scott and Jennifer.

Halkel--Good morning.  So far we have the wind, but no rain.

Jane--I don't have an email address for Sun.

Good morning, Callie.  Don't get wet.:)

Good Morning Everyone from the overcast but relatively warm (for this time of the year), rocky coast of Maine.

All is well here.  Tomorrow I go for my second denture fitting,  and I am looking forward to having my smile back again,  by next week.

It feels very good to see January slipping by us so quickly...
with the shortest month to go before Spring.

All is well here,

Phyllis, Thank you for todays graphic. I love it ! And it is very encouraging for us that must go forward slowly…we really do get there, and safely, by slowing down.

Don, I hope your lady is healing quickly..

Lloyd, I had no idea your Grand daughter was that age..I was thinking of perhaps a teen ager. I'm glad you are feeling better today, and do enjoy your games later on.

Hal, we have no Church today at Rowntree, we are still in semi lock-down. If all goes well, they plan to get back to normal living tomorrow.

phyllis, thank you for the reminder of the list of members at the top of the page. I had read it once and then forgot it was there. Answers a lot of questions for us. Thanks again.

I woke today to a nice light rain, and more is expected tomorrow. Such a delightful treat for our parched So. Ca. My son in Santa Cruz, has had a lot more heavy rain that we, guess it veered to the East before it reached the South.

My Dori is due back from Colorado late today. Gary has had a cold since they got home from Idaho, so I am sure he will welcome her loving attentions. He did preach at his Church today though, so he is improving.

I am washed and fed a huge breakfast that was delivered to my door, so I will get my lazy body dressed in day time gear. No place to go, except walking the hallways, but I should be attired properly for that.  I will see you all later.

Good afternoon, sun is in and out.

Phyllis, thanks for graphic and saying so true.
Joan, Hope this post finds you feeling better. I will have a cranberry muffin. thanks

Gloria, we are expecting heavy rain and 60 mi. gust tomorrow. they are saying have everything tied down in your yards.

Don and Lloyd good to see your post.

Callie, I will be watching for Ellen, as I watch Rachel Ray nearly everyday.

Larry, take it easy, you seem to do so much. I know Pat appreciates all you do.  My husband spoiled me as he cooked breakfast every morning after we read the papers. Pancakes were every Sunday, from the day we got married.

Iwent to the cardiologist Friday, he said my heart was weaker, would like me to go to a hospital near the city, but I said no. So he said he would give me different med, and double the water pills that should help. After I finish writing here, I will go put my feet up.

June, I know you will be happy, when down stairs is open again.

Hi, to all my other cyber friends I did not mention

Linedancer--Thanks.  I am feeling a but better each day.  And if you had agreed to go to the hospital, what did they intend to do there?

Gloria de..my prayers are with you girl. You have a marvelous attitude. God loves you very much, and so do I.

Bis, for breakfast I had bacon and eggs, which I never order on m own, orange juice, coffee, a huge cinnamon roll, and I ate it all and I am still stuffed. I am doing my best to gain some weight, and what I don't eat, they throw away, and in my days of poverty it was a shame to waste food. So I ate it all.

June thank you for your good wishes. It's been a rough week for her; a couple of house calls from the doctor and a trip to the hospital last night. She's home and much improved. She has a tenacious but loving daughter who sees she gets the attention she deserves.  My role is mostly hand-holder and giver of comforting words.

I hope all who are ailing improve soon.  It's no fun being sick.

Someone said recently that I would find my keys one day - well, I did!  They were in a purse but between the plastic lining (cheap purse) and the outside.  I almost cried when I found them.

Dot and I did our usual this morning, going to church, then OTB where we changed our menu by sharing a lemon meringue pie and a tuna melt.  Usually Dot gets an oliveburger and I get a regular hamburger.  And we solve the problems of the world.

I hope Kendrick's coat is no indication of our winter, but it seems thicker than usual.  Any lines in his fur seem to have disappeared and he's shades of orange.

Hello, again,

The sun came out and I've been to church and the Church Ladies went OTL at our favorite diner.....actually, that should be OTB because we almost always have eggs, sausage or bacon and a pancake or a biscuit.  Recently, I've found that if I don't ask for a biscuit "hot enough to melt the butter", it's so cold that I have to send it back.

June,  I would never have made it through a cinnamon roll on top of the big breakfast.  I could barely finish the biscuit.

Very small group at church - almost no one at the diner - and not much traffic going to or from.   Sounds as if a lot of people are having respiratory and/or flu problems.

Mary Ann,  Hooray for the found keys!

Don, hand-holding and comforting words are the best medicine of all.

Lindancer,  I hope the new med "does the trick".     If you see or hear anything about an upcoming Rachael Ray show having ear-piercing,  please tell me.  I don't always hear about these things until the very last minute - and I'm afraid I won't know I should record the show because I'm not going to be home.

I had to put part of the paper on a drying rack.  Off to see what's going on in the comics and the tv schedule.

I don't think I ever knew about the members list at the top of the page.  Thank you so much for calling my attention to it.  I've also sent a not off to Sun.  It's so sad when our friends just kind of disappear and we don't know what happened.  I hope they both let us know.

My daughter was here for her regular "check up on Mom" visit.  We settled all the family business and covered some of the USA business.  I sure hope we made the right decisions!

June--That was a good breakfast.  Your link didn't work for me.

Radioman--Glad to hear Bubble is feeling better.

Mary Ann--I am so very glad you  found your keys.

Callie--When my paper is soaked, I call and ask for another.  When the weather is inclement, they are supposed to double bag them.

Janie--I hope you and your daughter made the right decisions, too.  Then I don't have to worry about them.

Sandy--that's not very long to wait.

Don, I am quite sure that your presence with Bubble is very healing. I am happy she has such a loving daughter, and you.

Mary Ann, I can feel your joy at finding your keys. Best you toss out that cheap purse. I think animals grow more fur when it is to be colder weather. I hope I am wrong.

Callie, after that breakfast we had a huge lunch delivered. A stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, green salad, Apple pie and coffee. I ate the salad, about a third of the chicken and potatoes, most all the peas, then the pie and coffee. Then took myself out for a long walk on three floors on all the hallways. Still feel too full.

Janie, I had a "check up" call from my Santa Cruz son. We had lots of laughs, and sharing of thoughts. We are Blessed to have such thoughtful children. And I am so thankful, as I know you are too.

Bis, the link didn't work for me either…I should have deleted it. It was worth trying to share..the first time Kate Smith ever sang God Bless America. Very heart stirring.

The rain is still heavily falling now, much more than I thought we would get. I am thankful. Just hope and pray my Dori has safe air flight  from Colorado. Rain in our area is to continue through the night and tomorrow.

Callie--They will only bring another paper on the weekends.  During the week we have to take a credit.

June--You sure have good meals.

We are under a severe storm watch and tornado watch until 10 p.m.  I'm going to gather up some pillows and a blanket and go in my walk-in closet.

Cheesecake

Occasionally at the restaurant where I work there are extra desserts, and the staff are given some to take home. Once I brought home two pieces of cheesecake for my son and daughter. Katie had a piece that evening.

0The next day her older brother found her watching TV and eating more cheesecake. "Are you eating my cheesecake?" he demanded.

"Oh, no," she replied sweetly, "I ate yours yesterday."

Food For Thought

A Time to Honor and a Time to Grieve
By Arie Leder
Scripture Reading: Esther 5:9-6:12; Romans 12:3

Afterward Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief.
Esther 6:12
It is wise, the apostle Paul reminds us, not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought. But people like Haman overrate their importance: Whom would the king rather honor than me? Fools invest only in “me.”
We are familiar with such folly: “My body is mine; I can do with itâ€"intellectually, sexually, matrimonially, gastronomicallyâ€"as I please. I am ruler over my body.”
What truly matters, though, is not what you think you deserve, or what you think of yourself, but what the King thinks of you. If we concern ourselves with the righteousness of the King, says Jesus, all the other good things we need will be given to us as well (Matthew 6:33).
Mordecai, a good citizen of the kingdom of heaven, had saved the king of Persia from an attempt on his life. Because the smile of a king is like rain on a thirsty field (see Proverbs 16:15), King Xerxes honored Haman’s enemy. Even worse, he ordered Haman to honor Mordecai in the exact way Haman had expected to be honored himself.
A fool and his honor soon come to grief.
May we act wisely, not thinking too highly of ourselves, and acknowledge that all our gifts and talents come from the Lord.
We thank you, God, for honoring your Son, Jesus, above all other powers by raising him from the dead. Glory be to you, Lord, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Thought of the Day

"There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than 10,000 tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love."

--Washington Irving

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I, too, slept in an extra hour this morning but I had a reason.  Mickie decided to get up and take a walk in the middle of the night.  She really did have to go and Annie decided to join her.  Since they both took care of business at a bit before 3 a.m. they slept a bit later this morning.

OK, I just finished installing a light in the closet.  If you open the door it will come on.  So if Shirley doesn't take her wagon home today, and if you really NEED to open the closet, you'll see the wagon immediately.  Now, is there anything else you need, Jackie?

Doggies have been fed and I've been fed and I don't have any obligations until I pick up Kiran at the bus at 3:45.  I think I might cook something today.  I need some meals microwave ready and I guess it's time to do that.  I housecleaned and rearranged cupboards during the past few days and I really don't want to mess it up but I suppose I better get cracking.

Make the day a good one.  If anyone wants rain, we're suppose to have ANOTHER rainy day!  I guess I should look on the bright side...it could be snow!

Actually, Jackie, my closets aren't big enough to walk into and I'm not sure I would if I could.  If I were in Joanie's place, I'd fear the closet more than the tornado.  I'm just a bit claustrophobic.  If I can see out, I'm OK but blank walls are my "bugaboo".

I'm glad you survived the night, Joanie, and I understand how scary that can be.  The first time I visited Cindy in Texas the tornado warning sirens went off.  Her designated space is a very large walk in closet under the stairs.  And that's where we all headed.  I watched the kids situate themselves and two large dogs and my daughter motioned me in.  I shook my head, took my doggie and went across the hall into the bathroom.  I laid the mirror on the floor and sat beside it with Bonnie in my arms until the all clear sounded.  I knew if I went in that closet with all that humanity and pets, it was only going to be a matter of seconds before I had a bad case of the "screamin' meanies".  I guess that's why I don't live in tornado alley.

Seems that my days activities have taken care of themselves.  Kiran is home from school today and the only one available to look after her is me.  So here we are.  I told her she has to avoid breathing on me because I'm just getting over a bad cold.   I guess we'll work it out.  Enjoy your day, Everyfriend!

Good Morning Everyone,
a sunshinny cold morning here, suppose to get pretty warm later on today.

Yesterday's football was a washout.  Actually boring to me.  And I am afraid the so called "super bowl" is going to be all hype and also boring.  But it may be just me.

I have to get busy working on my taxes.  But have to get my some information from my wife.  Seems like they want more and more info every year that has nothing to do with taxes, proving who you are.  And all along I thought computers were suppose to make our life easier.

JaneS, well your house will be smelling good later on.  What are you going to cook?

Joanie, it must not be to comfortable in a closet.  Don't they have an early warning system in your area so you could just leave what you need there and you could stay close to TV and be more comfortable?

Everyone have a great day.

a little tip on lights and closets.  I took out the regular light fixture and put in a motion detector fixture (in both closets).  I was always fussing at my wife and granddaughter about them leaving the light on in their walk in closets.  Now they light comes on when they walk in and goes off shortly after they leave.  No more fussing.

I see no post from Larry, hope he is fairing well this morning.  Nor noting from Lloyd, maybe he slept in.

It's dark and dreary this morning, but it's going to get worse than that.  Rain, snow, freezing rain, high winds...  a "winter weather advisory" from 1:00 p.m today until 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.  The worst conditions MAY be south and east of us.  There are already notices of early closing this afternoon and all day tomorrow for schools in Vermont.  My church friend took care of my food order on Saturday so I am well prepared with a full freezer and pantry and my propane tanks were filled during the past week so I'll keep warm (if we don't lose power).

Winter is more than 1/3 over!   :cheer: :cheer:

Hi everyone.  We had another very rainy afternoon and evening yesterday and were under a tornado watch for a couple of hours.  Fortunately there were no tornadoes in our area and no high winds.  It was not raining all morning so didn't interfere with going to church and then out to eat lunch.  I felt much less tired yesterday than I had all of last week so am hopeful that situation is behind me for awhile at least.  The schedule is very light today.  I plan on attending my Monday noon meeting and will stop at COSTCO on the way to fill my car with gas.  I had thought about picking up a couple of items and then remembered we should be going back there probably around Wednesday so Pat can get her new glasses and I can get the items then.  I did enjoy the football games yesterday, especially the win by the Atlanta Falcons that put them into the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks.  They really ran all over Green Bay yesterday.  They will play the New England Patriots who won their game over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the late game yesterday.

JaneS, I just now sent a short email to Molly to inquire of her health and that of her husband and family and asked if she minded me sharing her response if she is able to write back.  I did tell her that she was missed and we were concerned.

Sandy, I hope your dental appointment goes well today.

June, my granddaughter is the mother of my four great grandchildren, who live with their father.  She is far from a teenager.  Hope I things will be back to normal at your living facility this week.  June, I think this link will work for the Kate Smith 1938 introduction of "God Bless American":  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zF7a0wB-Lg

deAngel, perhaps you will be getting the storm front that has gone through the South this past weekend with lots and lots of rain.  Those are really strong wind gusts especially when you live in a mobile home.  Sorry to hear your heart is weaker but sure you are more comfortable in your home than in a hospital.  As our hearts get weaker it becomes such a problem to get the water removed from our bodies that is not needed.

Don, I sure hope this week finds Bubble feeling much improved.  Glad she didn't have to be admitted to the hospital.  I did enjoy your program yesterday.

Callie, we also had a much smaller group at both Sunday School and Church and it wasn't raining all morning.  I did encounter one man who had a bad cold and was holding his program over his mouth and not shaking hands during the time we pass the peace in our service.

Joan, we didn't get into a closet but I did get out my emergency radio, that has a light built in, and put in fresh batteries.  It is also hand cranked in case the batteries wear out.  Fortunately, we didn't need it.  We were just under a watch and not a warning to take cover.

Hal, I am just taking things slowly this morning as don't have to hurry.

Jeanne Lee, I had to read your post twice before I remembered you live in upstate New York, not in the middle of the Atlantic states.  I think I get you confused with Phyllis sometimes.

We have had two or three tornadoes here in my lifetime.  Lake Michigan is a great buffer for the weather.  Storms come up from the southwest, but usually go between here and Kalamazoo and Kazoo usually gets the brunt of any storm.  I have a condo unit that faces south and my lower level has only a north exposure.  I also am in an inside unit.  If we would have a tornado warning, I could go in my storage room which is at the front of the lower level.  The warning siren is just up the road from me and I'll tell you it is LOUD!

Good morning, Larry.  Glad to hear you are feeling better this week.  I hope you hear back from Molly.  Thanks for the link.  I have one of those weather radios, too.

Mary Ann--Good morning.  The years we lived in Arkansas we had many, many tornado warnings.  We always heeded and went under cover.  Many touched down, but the closest was 8 miles from us.

Good morning everyone. Finally got here. I had set a check disk and it took almost 3 hours to run. First time I did that since this lemon has been running again. It never took that long before. Woke to it raining and even had some snowflakes.

LARRY  I did not see anything on TV about those students walking out, hope the parents had the smarts to talk them out of it. I have emailed Sun several times and never had a reply.  Ttoday's musec-I agree, no melody and the same words repeated over and over.

JANE  I have Sun'semail and as I said to Larry I have sent several emails to her but never had a reply.

GLORIA de  we will be in for the heavy rain and winds late today and during the night. They had said up to 2 inches of rain and last I heard some places could get 3 inches of rail. Imagine if it was snow 2 -3 feet of it and with the winds huge snowdrifts.

JUNE  looks like Mother Nature is giving parts of Ca. the water it needs at last.

JOAN  I saw on the news about the large area under tornado warning. Stay safe.

AMY  I better run to the hidey hole to see if there is a lemon tart there with my name on it.

JACKIE  I like it when I wake up early. This morning I was awake but the computer took 3 hours to do the scan disk this morning.

JOAN  I will pass on breakfast, French toast is something I never liked. Chuckles not nice sister but who can resist good cheesecake? Great Food for Thought. Thank you for all today's goodies.

JANE  I am glad it is too warm to snow or with all the rain we are in for and the wind we would be snowed in.Been there in '78 and that was 1 time too many.

HAL  I saw on the news about the Pats winning and this morning people in the sports stores already buying Patriot's memorabilia. They showed the place where they print the Tshirts and they worked all night  to get them to the stores.

JEANNE LEE  I just hope we do not loose power let it rain. I know what the wind will sound like.

Good afternoon, rain wind and just ugly out side, but suppose to be much worse by night fall. They are still saying 60 mile winds and very high tide. In fact my radio station said the sound was up within a foot of the station right now.  the next high tide is about 5PM, and they were worried about that. The storm right now is off the Carolinas.

Joan, glad to read you are safe from the storm.

Gloria, that is my big fear right now the power will go off.  I do not like storms that hit at night.

Larry my nurse was here this AM, my BP was up a little, and she told me to keep my feet up, as I am getting water build up. I am setting here at the PC with my foot on and overturned wast basket ???

Good morning from a still frigid Interior although it is supposed to still warm up considerably on Tuesday or Wednesday. I have had nothing of note happening other than the usual. Farrah has been getting behind me on the couch more and doing her version of a cuddle by leaning over on me and purring. This gets her a good scratch and rub down which she enjoys.

I have been so sorry to read about all the rain, snow and tornados. We are still having frigid weather here and have had heavy snows. This year's and the past few have seen such terrible storms here and abroad. I have not been through any tornados but was nearly sucked off a narrow opening in a high building during  a one hundred mile hour wind storm in Anchorage and there is a feeling of utter helplessness that is terrifying. Luckily the four-foot railing was there.

If you have feed store close that handles cattle feed go there and buy a bag of stock salt it is crushed fine.cheep ice melt and better than what you buy in wall mart or what ever. it is also good to have on hand if you ever make ice cream in a electric or hand freezer.

Good Afternoon all, my day started out well. Had a good nights sleep, and free from staying home…dining rooms are open for service. Went down stairs for bandage change and happiness from the staff, the on to the accounting office to enquire about a billing from the new drug company we are ordering from. I have a Dec. bill for over two hundred dollars. I did not get satisfaction from our accounting so my dear good Gary will take on the payments for me…from my account which he is part of. Bill is not due to be paid till next month and I will see Gary this coming Wed. at Bible study. What a blessing this son is !! When I thank him for something or ask for a favor his reply is always, "No problem". My other son is the same kind person, but too distant to be of immediate help, and I think his wife takes care of all their small business. He handles my stock portfolio, and what a genius he has been there.

You all sound cheerful and happy and optimistic this morning…another blessing. As far as lighting in a storm is concerned, I keep flash lights all over the place just in case of a power failure. One large one by my night stand, one in the kitchen, one small one here by my desk, and another that is in my cart. The desk one has an odd looking battery that has gone dead, so I will have to investigate a replacement…if there is one.

Time to eat a late lunch…a nice bowl of soup for a change from the heavy meals that we have had in delivery…I am glad that is no longer necessary, but it was a needed blessing at the time.

We have had flash flood warning for our area today, but nary a drop of rain since I woke at 7 a.m.

Joan, Anchorage, four hundred miles south of the interior, lies in the same geographical and climatic zone as Oregon and Washington. It is situated on a narrow strip of below sea level land and lies between the narrow inlet off of the Gulf of Alaska and the Alaska Range.

Warm winters and cool summers are the norms with earthquakes, high winds, and storms common. The entire S. E. of Alaska is scenically beautiful, and the offshore seas and oceans are full of life. However, that land also has not only mountains and an abundance of inlets and estuaries; it also includes many volcanos which place it inside the world's "ring of fire," that punctuates the globe. Thus the many eruptions, earthquakes and many storms in the region.

That same storm, which I in my ignorance, discounted when I went to collect the laundry room monies, also took off roofs and blew small planes and watercraft off their moorings and damaged them. This was my first year living in Anchorage, and the term high winds didn't mean much to a woman from an area that knew little about winds of any sort. After four years and multiple earthquakes, winds, and storms, along with rainy summers in the low sixties, I was fervent to move back to Fairbanks!

I just read something interesting in an article about blue eyed people and that gene. Scientists discovered years ago that while the gene for brown eyes has many variations, such as hazel, the gene for blue eyes which shuts off the brown, is the only actual mutation of the eye color causing gene. It seems that six thousand to ten thousand years ago, about the time our ancestors began to populate the northern climes, a single ancestor developed that mutation. Thus all blue eyed people can trace their ancestry back to that single individual.

Hal, all this marvelous technology, and we still catch the flu and the common cold.

My day turned out very well. no rain in sight for a whlle now but it is still quite cold outside..brisk winds. They said, in the olden days, "We are going to have weather, whether or not."

I had a good supper...cleaned up some left-overs, and now it is time for a last walk before bedtime. I pray you all have a peaceful night and a happy tomorrow. Prayers, Hugs and Love, as always. June

Hal, I saw those!

I read in Science, Inc. that the reason we can't as yet cure the common cold is that it is made up of several strains and variations that continually morph into new ones.

I'm a little late going to bed tonight but I did have a short nap this afternoon while Kiran was on the computer.  I told her that if i fell asleep and she needed me she should wake me.

It's been raining all day and now they are saying it is going to snow all night.  It did look a little like tiny snowflakes when I took the doggies out for the last time a bit ago.  Now Im off to bed.  Good Night Everyfriend and may God bless us, every one.

Food For Thought

A Time to Speak
By Arie Leder
Scripture Reading: Ruth 3:1-5; 4:9-10; Deuteronomy 25:5-6

Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for.”
Ruth 3:1
Ruth’s decision to leave Moab has made her a wanderer, with no place to call home. She has put her time into helping Naomi by doing the tiring work of gleaning in the harvest fields of Boaz, who happens to be a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband. The time is ripe for Naomi to find a home for Ruth and put an end to her wandering.
Boaz is a guardian-redeemer, someone who can buy back Elimelek’s fields and so return prosperity to the family of Elimelek. Earlier Boaz had shown a willingness to help by instructing his workers to leave behind extra grain stalks for Ruth. Naomi, banking on Boaz as an honest and caring person, hopes he will further fulfill his obligation as a member of the extended family. Because she is childless and has no other sons for Ruth to marry, Naomi sees an opportunity in Boaz as her guardian-redeemer. Through this righteous Israelite, Ruth will not only find rest from her own wandering but also keep alive the name of her husband’s family. Naomi speaks, and Ruth follows her instructions. And Boaz does what he is called to do.
When the time was right, God sent his only Son, who willingly became our Redeemer. He made this earth his home, suffered, and died for all who believe in him, so that we might be adopted into God’s family and receive full rights as his children (Galatians 4:4-7).
Thank you, heavenly Father, for bringing us to our Redeemer to find our restful home in Christ. In his name we pray. Amen.

Good Morning everyone!

Lloyd

Remembering Mum's Clothesline
There is one thing that's left out. We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push

the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.

You have to be a "certain age" to appreciate this one....

(But you YOUNGER ones can read about "The GOOD ol' days"!!)

I can hear my mother now.....
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES

(If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)

1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.

2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands.

3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.

4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.

5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbours think?

6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!)

8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry."

9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pegs when taking down dry clothes! Pegs left on the lines were "tacky"!

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pegs, but shared one of the clothes pegs with

the next washed item.

11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.

12. IRONED???!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!

I woke up at 1a.m. for a bathroom call, and stayed up to just figure things out. Ever have one of those mornings ? Didn't solve a thing, but got some odds and ends taken care of.

I lost the paper work to my Lynx vacuum cleaner during my move, so don't know while charging if the light is supposed to blink, or if it starts blinking when fully charged. I should look it up on the computer. Lost all the paper work on my appliances. I kept it all together in one enveloped when I lived at Sunwest..and now it has evaporated into thin air. The story of my life at age 92.

Good Morning Everyfriend!

JUNE, all that "stuff" hides!  And it stays hidden until you no longer need it.  You either dispose of the item or find what you need on line and then the booklet miraculously appears just where it should have been in the first place.

We're having snow showers most of the day today but I don't think anything will lay.  The temps are to be above freezing.

I did a lot of cooking yesterday and HAL, it did smell pretty good in the house and I had quite a choice for supper.  I've got two complete dinners frozen and will freeze more after supper tonight.

I'll be off to Wally World this morning to greet my public.  This week I start my new schedule.  I'm going to be working one evening instead of all mornings.  This will give me a longer period between shifts and also a free Wednesday to go to the Farmers Market in the summer if I want to or to rest if I have to.  I hope it works the way I want it to.

I wish you all a lovely day full of whatever pleases you most.

Bis, yes our housekeepers do major vacuuming, but I had purchased this little Lynx cordless vac and I keep it just for occasional spills of the carpet. like yesterday a dropped a cookie and it crumbled a mess on the carpet,so I grabbed my lynx and went to work. I also have a dust buster, but it is not as thorough as my Lynx.

Janie, you are an early bird too. Your new work schedule sounds great, as long as you don't mind night driving. Having that Wed. off would be great. Can you revert back to your old schedule if this one is not comfortable for you ?

I am getting the yawns, so I'll crawl back into bed and see if sleep returns. See you later..........

Good morning, Joan and all.

An Egg McMuffin will taste really good this morning.   Love them!

Lloyd.....  your list of "Closeline" etiquette sounds exactly like the way my mother always hung up the wet clothes.  I  can picture her now doing all those things that were listed.  Had forgotten that you had to wipe the clotheslines first before you started hanging the clothes.  We had a long yard, and she would walk "many miles"  on wash day.  A nice memory from years ago .   When I got married and hung out the wash, I wasn't quite as precise about it as she was.  She had a regular system.

Nice to see the message from Sun.  Sure hope she will come around more.

Have a good day.

Hi everyone on a beautiful, sunny 44 degree morning.  We are headed up to 65 degrees this afternoon. Pat has an appointment this morning at the sleep doctor's office for her annual evaluation and that is all that is on the schedule for today. She tried to get her new printer to print a color copy without success so I will have to work with that a little later today.  Guess I will have to read the book--Drat!!  Nothing seems simple anymore.

Joan, I had another good day yesterday and feel OK today so think that spell is over for now.

Gloria, the weather up your way doesn't sound good again for today.  I guess it is good that it isn't snow.

Lloyd, I remember my dad buying big blocks of salt for the cattle and bags of rock salt to make ice cream with and deal with ice underfoot.  Hope you are feeling better today.

Hal, I saw a report on the news last evening of the new weather satellite images and what it will do for weather forecasting.

Jackie, thanks for relaying the email info on Sun.  It is easy to understand why it would be slow and difficult to type.  It sounds like she is doing OK.  I haven't heard from Molly yet.

Joan, your humor for today is a "groaner" but it sure made me chuckle as didn't see that coming.

Lloyd, your list of clothesline procedures is exactly how it was done as I was growing up and there was lots of ironing.

June, fortunately most appliance manuals are online and often they do not even come in a printed form with the item when purchased.

JaneS, I hope you will enjoy your new shift.  Will driving home at night in the dark be a problem during the winter months?

Phyllis, yesterday was national pie day and I did celebrate at dinner last night with a piece of key lime pie that Mrs. Edwards had made for me and put in our freezer.  It was very tasty.

Good morning everyone. Watching the news about the Nor'easter and some of the damage around. Another time I am glad to be living inland away from the shore. They had it worse than here. Still raining but not as windy. Should have realised that the wind would not be howling in this corner, the winds hit the back side of this building this time. There is a light covering of snow on the grassy areas but every thing else is wet.

JOAN  it is sad when one of out group drops out with no word. Makes me wonder what happened. I know I have told my daughter if anything happens to me to get in touch here or with you to let you know about it.

GLORIA de  not as bad here as I thought it would be. Just glad it was too warm for it to be snow. I rather storms hit in the daylight so we can at least see what is going on. I have a small hassock under my desk that I put my feet up on. Get too comfortable like that at times.

PATRICIA  you must have been terrified almost getting sucked out of that building. I have been through hurricanes and that is bad enough.

LLOYD  hope you are still taking it easy.

JUNE  great that things are opening up again where you live. Must mean that whatever attacked all of you has run it's course. Like you I have flashlights handy wherever I am.

PATRICIA  my Mom had beautiful blue eyes and so did some of my siblings. I got my Dad's dark brown eyes.

HAL  will check out your link later. Looks interesting.

JACKIE  glad you heard from Sun.  It is hard typing with one hand and I did that after the carpal tunnel surgery. I got pretty good with the left hand after awhile.

JOAN  an Egg McMuffin will be great this morning. I was looking through the breakfast items in Schwans and they have something that looks like them I might order them next time. For me that would be lunch or supper. Fancy Bar, no one left out except the Thia? Thank you for today's goodies.

LLOYD  love the Clotheslines. I sure remember those days.

JANE  I used to do a lot of cooking on week ends when I was working. I had a freezer with dinners I made and sure were appreciated.

PHYLLIS  I sure remember the days of making peanut butter cookies and my 3 waiting for them to cool enough to eat. Those were good days.

JOY  next order from Schwans I will order what looks and sounds like the Egg McMuffin.

Good Morning,

All of a sudden, my week has become very busy.  In addition to several activities of my own,  I'm going to cook.....twice!

One son/dil are coming for dinner tonight before they go on vacation and the other one is coming after work tomorrow to pick up some things that need to go to his house.  His comment was,  "At least, I'll get dinner".  (Oh, really? I don't remember mentioning dinner  ;D - but, of course, Mom always comes through  :smitten:)

Haven't decided if I'll "cook once, serve twice" - will probably depend on how much is left over tonight.

Hope Everyfriend Everywhere is having an Enjoyable Day.

That which was lost has been found. I did not find the Lynx paperwork, however the charger folder was where it should be, snuggly at home beneath the charger. I guess I did something right for a change.

Jackie, thank you for the information on Sun. There is usually a good reason why one of "ours" fails to post. My dear DIL Dori is posted in several areas…Google has her programs listed, and Gary is probably there too, or some other search engine.

Right now I am trying to find my way back to the S.S. I accidentally left it and now my computer takes me back to Dec.1…I'll find you though, even if I am still feeling just half awake.

I stumbled back in…..what I need to do is get off this computer, get dressed, go have my leg taken care of, then come home and go back to sleep. My eyes and brain keep closing down.

Hal, move over buddy, I'm in the same condition as you today…not sick..just not with it. and leg hurts.

Callie, I know your "kids" are going to love some of Mom's cooking.

OH YAY !!!!!! My pill girl popped in and said not to rush getting to the Clinic. They are having doctors visits today, and it is always very crowded on those days, so I will have a good excuse to go back to sleep and go for leg treatment about 3 this afternoon. Whew…God is so Good. :smitten:  :angel4:

I'm home and I've taken care of the pups, changed my clothes, had lunch and watched the doggies play a bit.  Now we're all going to take a bit of a nap.

Tomorrow is my first day doing a late afternoon shift into evening.  LARRY and someone else asked if this would be a problem with night driving.  No, it's all back road and less than a mile from WM to my house.  It's the oncoming traffic on highways that bothers me.  An occasional car on a back road isn't a problem.

Now I'm going to follow Joanie's example and see if there are any zzzzs left on the sofa.  I stayed up too late last night and I had Kiran all day.  If anyone needs me, feel free to holler.

I am baking brownies for tonight's dessert - it is an easy meal of mostly veggies and salad for three people are coming - it is called a Raclette meal which is melted cheese over veggies and sometimes meat.  We do this a couple of times a year - very hard to find that Swiss cheese that is just for this meal.  We all toast our own cheese and then scrape it over potatoes, green beans, and so forth.  Makes a nice dinner for discussions.  :)  Happy discussions for sure.

I'm here.....sort of. Had two naps and still want more.I have to eat something. Finally got myself dressed, so may wander down to our big fridge in the third floor lobby and see if there is anything of interest in the frozen dinners I have there..if not I will open some soup. I think I have a cold, or something. I am medication with what I call my Grandfathers "Irish coffee".Black coffee with a dollop of Christian Bros. Brandy added. The name Christian Bros. soothes my conscience.

Gloria de, dear heart. They tell me my leg looks better. They measure the wound now and then and say it is growing smaller, which I can agree with and even looks better, if an open wound can look better. I pray they are correct. You have given me great hope though my friend, knowing it took three months for your healing..I'm in the second month right now.

Now off I go to check on my frozen lunch........

Bis, I am still about twenty pounds under my normal weight, but my body feels comfortable, so i'm sure it is fine. I just had a chocolate Ensure. Went down for balance and mobility class and worked up an appetite. The Ensure hit the spot.

Tomorrow my Gary comes for Bible studies and I'm looking forward to that.

Just remembered...have to go down for a late bandage change...byeeeee.

You are doing exceptionally well, you seem to be comfortable considering the leg issue and all, you are with good spirits and excercising with  walking.

You are not going to every dog and pony show in the place :O) But those that are important to you , IF you feel like it .

So keep up the good work and be your own best friend first ;)

Good Wednesday morning, Everyfriend.  There’s a breakfast buffet to accompany your coffee or tea. I wish everyone a great day!!

CHUCKLES

Quiz

Joey and his classmates had just finished a tour of the local fire hall.

Before each student could leave, the fire chief quizzed him.

The fire chief asked little Joey, "What do you do if your clothes catch on fire?"

Joey replied promptly, "I don't put them on."

Food For Thought

The Master Carpenter
(Author Unknown)

Mother's father worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some crates for the clothes his church was sending to some orphanage in China. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone.

When he mentally replayed his earlier actions, he realized what happened; the glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the crates, which he had nailed shut. His brand new glasses were heading for China!

The Great Depression was at its height and Grandpa had six children. He had spent $20 for those glasses that very morning. He was upset by the thought of having to buy another pair.

"It's not fair," he told God as he drove home in frustration. "I've been very faithful in giving of my time and money to your work, and now this."

Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on furlough in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him in China, so he came to speak one Sunday at my grandfather's small church in Chicago.

The missionary began by thanking the people for their faithfulness in supporting the orphanage. "But most of all," he said, "I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, the Communists had just swept through the orphanage, destroying everything, including my glasses. I was desperate. Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your crates arrived. When my staff removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on top."

The missionary paused long enough to let his words sink in. Then, still gripped with the wonder of it all, he continued: "Folks, when I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that."

The people listened, happy for the miraculous glasses. But the missionary surely must have confused their church with another, they thought. There were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.

But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.

Thought of the Day

"The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty - it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.."

Well I seldom disagree. I just talk a lot and try to listen with a true heart and sincerely. but I have always let a lot of my desires go and put others first. and believe me it has Paid big diva-dens this time.when I had to go to hospital (two deffer-ant Neighbors) were here on the spot to feed the cattle and are still alternating and taking care of them (as I am still not able) .years ago when I had My jaw broken and wired shut(had to have what ever I ate liquid so could suck through a straw) first day home from hospital knock on the door and was two neighbors carried in two big boxes of food for us,we were broke $$$ none and they took care of us until we were healed and back on our feet. so i will always put others first. Have a great day.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  This is the first day of my new schedule.  I didn't have to get up for anything today so I didn't set the alarm.  It was 7:15 when the doggies began to prowl.  We haven't slept that late since I can't remember when!  Now to see how the rest of the day and the evening at work goes.

I wish you all a lovely day full of whatever pleases you most!

Hi everyone.  It is cooler this morning but headed up to a sunny 72 degrees this afternoon.  We had to get up earlier this morning as Pat has a Physical Therapy appointment at 9:15.  Fortunately it is only about 15 minutes from the house.  On the way back I plan on stopping at the City Hall and paying the taxes so I can get a new tag.  Pat expects to get a call from COSTCO about her new glasses sometime today.  This evening I will have dinner with Scott and Jennifer at the church.  So it is going to be a full day.

As seems to be normal now at doctor's offices, we were kept waiting more than an hour past Pat's appointment time to be called back into the exam room.  The doctor was very pleased with the report on Pat's CPAP machine and she won't need to see him again for a year.  On the way home we stopped at the Longhorn Steak House and had our main meal for the day.

Callie, your family exhibits that there is nothing like mother's cooking.

JaneS, glad to read that you live close to Walmart and have back roads to travel.

Lloyd, your neighbors helping you now and in the past sound like Missouri farmers.  The same was true where I grew up in NW Missouri and I expect the same occurs about everywhere as there are so many good people.

I appreciate everyone's postings.  I tried to keep my remarks shorter today after writing a book yesterday.

Good morning everyone,  looks like we might get sunshine today, HOORAY. I see the ground is starting to dry so there is hope.

HAL  I know how you feel. I do not have the “git up and go” anymore either. That lack of interest is one thing I am fighting. This place that had social activity when I moved here now seems to have lost that and I did enjoy being with others Now every one seems to just stay in their apartments.

CALLIE  be thankful you can still cook. Something I can no longer do. Would love to have my sons come over for a meal.

JUNE  my favorite place to be lately is on the couch with the TV on and the remote close by.  I do try and get outside to walk a little every day but not when it is raining.

JANE  I hope that later shift does not get to you.

GLORIA de  I am so glad to see the end of all that rain.

JOAN  I will enjoy a breakfast buffet.  Will be great to have a bit of every thing. Looks like little Joey did not learn much at the fire hall. Love the Master Carpenter. Beautiful quote by Mother Teresa. Thank you for all today's goodies.

LLOYD  like you I always think of others first. Fo you it paid back with wonderful folks who you helped at times.

JOAN  hope you get all your errands done today, do not rush back to us. Enjoy the time away.

LARRY  keep writing your books. Always interesting.

Good Morning Everyone!

Cool this morning, but not cold.  Suppose to be sun and lots of it.  Another front coming through but not going to cool thing off much.

Lloyd, I must say thanks for reminding us that we should always keep others in mind.  Our attention to self is important, but not to the point that we always come first.
Anyhow, I have found through experience we don't do a very good job of taking care of our-self.

Jackie, I don't have MS, but as a lifelong disabled person, I understand what you mean. If you don't stand up for yourself, you tend to get lost in the shuffle and not be able to get the assistance, education, and services you need. I do not look disabled, and there were those in my family who thought I was coasting by relying on those who helped me. And that I wasn't trying when others were doing things for me. You have to put yourself out there when you are disabled or have a disease. You have to be your own advocate when others don't understand or accept the issue.

I can see where others mistook your meaning. I have had people all my life who sincerely believed I was too defensive or misunderstood what someone was saying or only that I wasn't listening. I remember such a person, my aunt who took it upon herself when I was thirteen, to come with me to the handicapped services office, ready to interpret and correctly arrange things.

She kept trying to take charge, assuming that was all that was needed and then she was shocked to find that no, they didn't help with that and no there was no money to do that, and no nothing like that would help even if there were money available. She was quite shocked and indignant and yet I had been saying that all along.

Good morning, for at least another 30 min.

Good morning, Joan.  Hope you won't have any problems getting your errands done today.  It is a beautiful sunny day here in my part of the world.  Central Maryland.  Have not seen any sunshine for several days of fog, clouds, misty rain, wind and some scattered snow flakes.  So, the sun sure is welcomed here today.  I think it is supposed to be in the 50's with the cold coming back for the weekend.

This Sat. is the annual Polar Bear Swim down on the Chesapeake Bay for the Special Olympics.  I know it is one of the most popular charity event in the state.  Last year, I think they had to postpone it because of the terrible freezing cold weather.  There are many brave soles who participate and they raise a lot of money.

Gloria,  your place sounds exactly like where I live.  So many activities have been either stopped or curtailed in one way or another.  They had to stop Bingo, because "someone" complained about them playing for money.  10 cents a game with very limited jackpots.  Someone called the zoning board, and they were told that with that small amount of money, it was perfectly legal. But, the management had it cancelled.  They tried playing for candy bars, but that didn't last long.  It had to be someone who lived here that complained, so they hurt not only themselves but all the other players as well.

So many other activities have been stopped.  I think the main cause was there was just not that big of participation,.  So many complaints about this and that,  it wasn't fun to go to anymore.  They have tried to get some dominoes games started up, but so far, I haven't been to any of them.  And, I have not been playing cards much anymore either.  I think everyone is just tired of all the complaints and nit-picking that goes on.  The moral is gone way down.

I met a lady this morning, when I went down to get my mail, who is in the process of moving here. She asked me how I like it, and I really didn't want to sound that negative. I just told her that, like most places like this, you have some complaining and conflicks.  She seemed to accept that ok.  Most of the people here are very nice, but a lot of them have just started keeping to themselves.  Not very good attendance at the periodic luncheons we have, either.  Kind of sad when you really think about it.  I know there are a few people here that should be in assistant living places.  But, the management cannot put someone out for that reason.  It can be a little depressing at times.  And, the ambulance comes just about every week for someone.  Sometimes they will take someone out, or it might just for help getting up from a fall.

So, I guess all these types of places have their good points and their bad ones.  I think, probably, a lot of ones kind of feel like this is the last place they will be and that can be depressing in itself.

But, you just have to keep taking one day at a time and try to adjust to your surroundings.

I see that it is almost lunch time, so will have to look for something to eat.

I am waiting for an order from Schwans today.  I do know that I will enjoy a piece of the tilapia filets that I have ordered.  I wish I had the makings for a salad, so I will have to find some kind of an alternative. I have plenty of things in my pantry, just no fresh greens. I need to get to the store this week end.

Have a great afternoon.

Joy

Amy--You were missed.  I am glad you're feeling better.

Joy--No problems doing my errands.  Those are brave, hearty souls who participate in the polar bear swim.  I guess many places like yours have their own set of problems.  Last year my sister moved to a similar place in the Rochester suburbs.  She's mentioned some of the same problems you have.  I have the makings for a salad, but no tilapia.  Too  bad we couldn't get together and share.

We have that kind of participation in our condo board.  I was on the board for 12-14 years and decided that was enough.  I didn't have any problems, just got tired - I was the first secretary, then took over as treasurer.  We now have one woman who has been on the board since I left and she has been both president and treasurer; it is like she is a permanent treasurer.  She does a good job in handling the condo finances, so I have no complaint, but she should not have to be a permanent fixture.  It is my thought that someone from each condo unit should be on the board for at least one two-year term so they know why and how things operate.  It will never happen, however.  It's a case of "let George do it".

Most organizations or gatherings seem to run on the principle of that old saying about  SOMEBODY, EVERYBODY, ANYBODY and NOBODY.

It was a job ANYBODY could do
EVERYBODY thought SOMEBODY would do it
but NOBODY did.

Larry:  A while back you asked me if I knew about the Missouri  Star Quilt episodes, yes - I like to watch that on utube.  A week later, I am answering you.   ;)

June:  Love your "holy communion coffee with brandy".  Keep on - keeping on!!!

Lloyd:  Good deeds come back sometimes further down the road - take care.

Gloria: - Joy :  Are there any people you can meet or invite in - just one-on-one then add another who may be interested.  Anything - talk about books, or play cards, or just visit.  I hope the best for both of you.

Angel:  Glad that you did have your aunt's support - I hope you have all your needs cared for now as well.  Stay warm this winter.

Amy:  You have a heavy load now - we all wish we could be there to just be a friend.  Take care of yourself as best you can.

At our dinner with 3 friends here last night, I was whining about the price of a ham since I need a ham bone to make the split-pea soup Don has asked for - over a month now.  Who else has a doorbell ring with a young man carrying a cut-out ham bone to hand over to us?  It is great!  Ask and you shall receive!

It will freeze tonight.  We have covered three little trees with double cloths.  Off now to take the car in for a check-up.

Jane S.  Thanks for reminding us to say Thank You Joan

Bis, both The Master Carpenter, and the message from Mother Teresa, made this day perfect. Thank you. We just never know how God works in fulfilling the needs, and how thankful I am that God does.

Lloyd, thank you for sharing the goodness that you find in your life. It makes me so happy for you, and so happy to hear of the kinds shown to you.

Janie, I didn't want to start my day..slept till 6 a.m. when my first pill was delivered to me in bed. Next thing I knew it was 7 a.m. and the nurse was back with four more pills and two big salt tablets. Felt like staying in bed, but thought of all those chemicals down there in my stomach doing "what ?" so decided to get up and have some food to soothe my gut.

Gloria, do you have hallways you can walk it when the weather is bad. I feel it is important that we keep the body moving well, and my apt. is so small it doesn't allow for a good walk, so I use the hallways. I also practice standing straight when I walk with the cart, as that cart makes if so easy to slump.

Hal, I agree, we tend to pray and do things for others, but our own "self" gets put to the side, which is foolish..very foolish..on our part. When you think of how God put us together, and how intricate and delicate some of our "parts" are…including our minds as well as our bodies….we should be so appreciative of what He has done for us, we should tend to take care of what He has done. In other words..do we own ourselves, or are do we belong to our Creator, and take better care of what he has given us ??????

It seems that all programs that call for volunteer works eventually fail. I started a Fire Monitors program, where I lived before, and that dwindled down to just two of us, so I disbanded it. The Red Hatters seem to do well though, where ever they are. We do well here because we have hired people directing the varied programs, and they like their jobs, so do well at them.

Gloria de, where I live now is just a few hundred more dollars than the place I lived in Hemet..that was run by a huge, money making Conglomerate, whereas this place is run by the Quakers, and they are non profit. I don't know if the Quakers have other places in other states, but I hope so. If people that own their own homes and have a good, and I mean GOOD friend, they may consider teaming up with them in their private home. That way you are not alone, you can share expenses, and have good company.

Well not intentionally but it seems my honest statement has caused somewhat of a debate..... I made my statement as to Mycheals posting...quote: " be your own best friend first "....and as I stated, right or wrong, I now live my life where I put myself first....and I make no apologies as to whether this sounds selfish....I am a survivor and I will survive any way that I can, I have survived this long so far....even when others have turned their back on me...In this day and age, if you dont look after yourself, who else is going to do it for you...no one knows all my personal life, so please dont judge...there is only one person who has the right to do that, and that is my maker...just respect my personal and honest opinion, and my personal view, as I respect yours...nor will I question or debate yours...I still remain loyal to those who remain loyal to me...

This has been a good day. My doctor was seeing her patients downstairs. We had a good chat, and she gave me some good answers to my questions. Three "goods" is a real plus. My B.P. was a bit raised, which is natural, and my weight is a bit down, 108, but I think we lose muscle mass as we age and muscle weighs more than fat.

I placed an order with Amazon for a couple of things, but didn't get the potting soil I wanted. I really don't need another plant...I think I feel the Spring urge to grow things, even if it is not a big garden, it is a new life of sorts.

Oh, well..........

My Gary did his usual good job of Bible teaching today, and he played his guitar and we sang a bunch of religious songs. He is so well liked. We have another young man that will do alternate teaching with Gary...one week on and one week off. Then I had lunch with another nice lady tenant. She was going to go clothing shopping with her daughter this afternoon.

Nothing doing tonight downstairs..game night...but I feel the day has been full enough..I may go down for Music Bingo tomorrow at 10a.m. I should feel alive by then.  8)

Nearly time to heat up some left overs for supper and just relax.

There is a lot self-interest in each one of us,unfortunately, in my way of thinking. If we are thankful for our lives, if we realize we are never alone, that others suffer in their own lives, in their own way, for their own reasons, all we can do is feel sorrow for them. We cannot heal their various problems,we cannot even understand in many instances. But for some reason our words are mis-interpreted in ways other than we intended. We should not feel the need to apologize for something we did not mean. Am I correct ? I feel you understand what I am saying Mycheal.

Today was spent running around town and giving my money away to various bill collectors. Unfortunately, my wallet seems a bit threadbare.

We are having a low of zero today and a promise of more snow. Perhaps surprisingly to you Southerners, (Which basically includes everyone stateside.); during the last two weeks of fifty to fifty-three below, North Pole, 26 miles to the south and Delta Junction, 95 miles south had lows of minus 72 and minus 76.

However, they are on a plain, divided by three rivers and we are cocooned by foothills and mountains. This will be the winter that was for many military families and newcomers.

Now we are expected to warm up even further.

Maybe I misunderstood but I thought these "forums" were also called "discussions".  If you gather 20 to 30 people together in a room, you are bound to have lively "discussions".  That's what keeps us alert and learning.  I've learned so much about so many things from all of you, that I would feel lost without this place.  All of you are so intelligent and so willing to share and all our lives are so different that we can't help but be learning from one another every day.  Wouldn't this be a dull place if we all thought alike?  Thank you all for your differences and for your ability to share that difference.  I'm constantly telling my family something that one of you has taught me just by posting here.  And I love the look of wonder on my daughter's face when she watches my face when I talk about all of you.  Do you know what an amazing place this is?  Please don't ever change that.  Keep on being who you are and sharing who you are with me.  This place is my anchor!

I just dont need anyone telling me they " disagree " ( as the term LLoyd used, ) with the way I am dealing with or handling my life, my choices, just need them to understand, and of course voice their opinion on theirs...our lives are so very very different...
I certainly would not have the right to tell anyone that " I disagree " with the way they are dealing with theirs...

CHUCKLES

A Long Way Home

Two blonde friends were going on a trip to Florida. A neighbor told them that they'd be fine as long as they paid attention to the road signs along the way. But they'd driven just 30 miles when they saw one that read, "Clean Restrooms Ahead."

Two months later they arrived in Florida exhausted, having used up 86 bottles of Windex, 267 rolls of paper towels, and three cases of toilet-bowl cleaner. Total restrooms cleaned: 450.

Food For Thought

Persian Wisdom
By Arie Leder, Wednesday, January 18, 2017 12:00 AM
Scripture Reading: Esther 6:12-14

Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against himâ€"you will surely come to ruin!
Esther 6:13
Zeresh, like Vashti and Esther, is no push-over. She tells her husband Haman the truth: You pulled on the ears of the wrong dog! Haman’s advisers agreed. We don’t know how Zeresh and the others knew what Haman was up against, but we do know that God was working behind the scenes to protect his people.
There is much irony in these words from Zeresh. It’s as if they are spoken to God’s ancient ene-my, Satan. But God’s ancient enemy, though he knows his end will come, will not stop wreaking havoc where he can. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).
God chose the weak and foolish things of the world to shame the wise and strong (1 Corinthians 1:27). Mordecai and Esther were only two distant relatives of old Jewish royalty trying to stand against the Persian elite. It was laughable.
But look further: the world today continues to mock a Jewish descendant of another royal family, Jesus Christ, the Son of David. And it wants to silence his followers’ testimony.
Yet only a fool would refuse to take this Persian wisdom to heart: “You cannot stand against himâ€"you will surely come to ruin.”
God of heaven, comfort today your persecuted followers wherever they confront the folly of this world. And may those who do not experience persecution continue to lift them up and seek justice for all. Amen.

Yesterday was a beautiful day with a temp. of 72° (!) but today is cloudy and gloomy.  Still, it isn't bad enough to avoid the grocery shopping this morning so I will be off to do that and then to get my hair cut this afternoon.  Such an exciting day but I'm not complaining...it gets me out of the house and doing a little walking/exercise.

So glad to know that you are feeling better, Amy.  And the same for all of you that are feeling better.  And hugs and prayers for all of you who might still be down a little.

Full day so I must get a move on.

Hi everyone on a rainy 64 degree morning.  However, the rain is not suppose to last very long and should be over by the time I head to coffee and later to the Wisdom class.  Yesterday as we returned from Pat's PT appointment we stopped at the City Hall and I went in and paid the taxes on our cars.  I was very pleased when I realized the receipt also had the tags I needed for the license plates.  I came home and put them on and that was it for another year.  There was no line and I was in and out in no more than 5 minutes or so.  Only Scott joined me for dinner last evening as Jennifer is done with bronchitis. Pat did get notice yesterday that her new glasses are ready so we may go over to COSTCO to get them later today.  This will be our exciting day.

Patricia and Joan, anyone seeing me would not think I was disabled as I have good  mobile for short distances.  It has made me aware you can't judge a book by its cover and we don't know what may be wrong with other people.  When Pat is with me no one would question using the handicapped parking space.  We both had been determined to be permanently disabled and I have the disabled tags on my car.

Amy, sure glad to see you are feeling much better today.  It seems there are many people ill now with flu and colds.  I hope you took things easy yesterday and gave yourself time to recover.

Joy, why anyone would want to subject themselves to the Polar Bear Swim is beyond me.  It is too bad that one person's comments can over ride the enjoyment of the group such as your bingo prize.  We have gotten so afraid of being criticized that  common sense has fallen by the way.

deAngel, hope your visit to your primary doctor sent well yesterday and he found you better than your last doctor visit.

Carol, no problem on waiting a week to answer my question.  I expected you knew of these videos on the Missouri Star Quilt site.  Pat faithfully watches these videos and others that are available.  One of these days she will need to get started quilting again as hasn't done much of it these last 8 months when she hasn't felt like doing it.  How nice of the young man to bring you the ham bone.

Jackie, I agree with you that we need to take care of ourselves first so that we are able to help others if we are able.  I believe the Bible tells us to "love your neighbor as yourself".  Life will always be a series of adjustments. We each are responsible for our own lives and what anyone else thinks is not something we can control nor should we try.

June, glad the doctor gave you positive news on your leg healing.

JaneS, I agree with you it would be a dull world if we all shared the same opinions.  Since I have been writing here in S&F's our rain has stopped and the sky is clearing.

Pat Scott Harbach did a posting in the Christian Photographers discussion yesterday.  Here is a link if you want to see what she wrote:  http://www.christianphotographers.com/community/index.php?topic=13574.msg192924#msg192924

Good Morning Everyone!

Off to bible study and men's breakfast pretty quick.  Food for the mind and soul, get a double dose this morning, with Joanies post and then at bible study.  Thank you Joanie.

Janie, couldn't agree more with your post.  It is a known fact, people are going to act like people and families squabble and fuss and don't always agree, about anything.  And if we aren't a family then I don't know who is.

So everyone, have a great day.  I am off to church.

Good morning everyone, raining again, as if we did not have enough this week. At least it looks/sounds like the wind has finally calmed down. It was howling around this corner again yesterday. Had a different CNA yesterday and she did more in 1 hour than the regular one does in 2.

HAL  I'm here and would love a cup of coffee.

JACKIE  I have to do everything for myself. My sons still do not seem to understand how little I can do these days. I only call them when I really need something. Really right now it is cooking that is the hardest for me to do.

PATRICIA  for me it is only the last 6 years that my health has gone down. My 3 are used to me being independent ands still seem to have not really accepted that there are so many things I can no longer do.

JOAN  we did end with sunshine yesterday and it was most welcome. I bundled up and went out for a walk but it was so windy I made it a very short walk. The fresh air sure felt good though. There is a click here and unless you are in that you are alone. They are the bossy type and good at giving orders. They will have a Valentine potluck and there is a list in the laundry room with everyone's name and what they are to bring to it. Sorry but I cannot do any cooking and they know it and they want me to make something I cannot make.  Like a few others I crossed my name out. Except for being able to get outside here I could have stayed where I was. Talked to my older son and the other day he was out starting to prune his apple trees, when he went inside he found a tick on him. Was not cold enough yet to kill them. We do need at least a couple of weeks below freezing to kill those things.

AMY  sorry you have been having a long conversation with that porcelain phone. That is not fun.

JOY  we sure miss that beautiful sun after a couple of days. Heard we are due for some winter temperatures by the end of the week. They still have bingo here on Wednesday night. The lady who started it has slowly been eased out when the know it all group started changing every thing and now she no longer even goes to it. She does love bingo, too. They started a card night but then there was someone who kept telling them they did not know how to play so that faded out, too. Then they started a book club that lasted about 2 months. The one who started it kept telling someone she did not understand the book. Heck we all get something different from what we read. Same person who thinks she is smarter than everyone else. The ambulance is here often too. Since my apartment is in the front a few in the back will call me and ask who the took out, I don't know I do not spend my time looking out to see who is coming and going. It can get depressing and I am so glad I am not nosey and have my computer. I mostly have been trying the individual meals from Schwans. I did order 1 fish one but have not tried it yet. You said you liked their cherries, what do you do with them. I am tempted to order them, I do love cherries.

GLORIA de  there is a place in Providence that sounds like where June lives and the ads on TV look so inviting but I would never be able to afford it.

MARY ANN  there is one here that would love to be the president of the association but so far those who belong have not voted her in. She has not been here as long as I have and youngest here. She has tried to take over every thing.
That is when things here started going downhill. Oh well I follow the rules we have and mind my own business.

JANE  I agree with you. Without Joan the SS would fade away.

CAROL  inviting anyone into our places here would get stories running around. There are a few here that we call each other and in the warmer weather we got together on the porch. Oh it has been ages since I had a nam bone for either the pea soup or vegetable soup like my Mom made and I did, too.

JUNE  no one walks the halls here. If I did that and someone at the other end of the hall saw me they would want to know what I was doing down there. Strange place here. Since I got those shots in my back I find I can stand up straighter than I had been. Keep elbows close to your sides and you will not slouch over with the  rollator.

JACKIE  I agree with you. No one else really knows what we are going through. They would not understand if we tried to explain.

JUNE  I was thinking yesterday looking at my plants I need some plant fertilizer. Been to long since they have been fed.

JANE  others just cannot understand when we try to tell them about this cyber family. Some have looked at me like I belong in a padded cell.

JENNY  hello.

JOAN  this Yankee will pass on the biscuits and gravy. Good Chuckles. Now that is really being dumb blondes. Thank you for today's goodies.

PHYLLIS  enjoy your shopping and getting your haircut.

LARRY  it is people like one lady I worked with. She had the handicap tag because of her husband but she thought it was great that even when she was alone she could park closer to places ti the tag. There was nothing wrong with her.  Thank you for the link. I did not know that Pat had such health problems. I will be adding her to my prayers.

Good morning, Larry.  Thanks for the link to Pat's posting.  She sure has had a difficult time, and I pray for her daily.

halkel--Good morning.  You're most welcome.

Good morning, Gloria.  Sure wish we'd get some of that rain.  I started this and have had to get up several times because my phone rang.  As soon as I say hello the caller hangs up.  GRRRR...  I'm sure if something happened to me anyone of you posters would/could take over.

Joan, I think you have years to go to catch up to me, but on the other hand, I would not want the responsibility of managing this folder - or any others.

Tom has a handicap plate on his car - for me.  Frankly, I think he should have one for him, but one is all we need.  He rarely parks in a handicap place, never when alone, but when I'm with him, even with a space nearby, he drops me off at the entrance, parks elsewhere, then joins me.  When we're finished, he gets the car and picks me up at the door.  I had a handicap plate with my car and for Tom to get the plate, he had to show the registration of my car that I had sold.

Speaking of the car, the great-niece to whom I sold the car has moved so now I am going to get her new address in Indy.

We have light snow this morning and I hope it doesn't develop into too much snow.  Not driving is a blessing!

I'm sorry to hear about Pat Halbach's troubles and I hope the new treatments will help.

Good morning, Joan and all.  I will pass on the biscuit and sausage gravy this morning., I like biscuits and sausage, but not much on the gravy.  I had my usual fruit with a slice of black bread, which is what my family call Pumpernickle bread. And, with real butter.

We, too, have sunshine this morning, but supposed to cloud up again later.  Very windy, but not real, real cold. I think the weather man said in the 50's for another day.  Then the cold comes back.

Larry, I am with you as to why someone wants to jump into the icy cold bay water.  But, it is for a good cause and is very well attended. One of the TV stations is one of the sponsors, and there are several of the more popular reporters who sign up with a 24 hour group.  They "plunge" once every hour for the whole 24 hours.  In and right out again.  It goes on all night.  Viewers can pledge money for  how many times they go in the water.  They have thousands and people who participate. A very good cause, but glad I don't have to do it. LOL

Gloria,   most special holidays we will have a luncheon here.  There is a sign-up sheet in the lobby with certain things that the activity director will want, but you can really bring most anything you'd like to bring.  There are a lot of people who don't do that much cooking will donate some cash to cover items that they buy.  Sometimes several people will go together and buy a turkey or ham. Some people may just bring a jar of pickles.  We used to have some really nice get togethers , but the last couple things have not been that well attended. Usually the Thanksgiving luncheon goes well.  For the Thanksgiving luncheon,  she will usually ask for certain things that go with Thanksgiving.  Cranberry sauce, dressing, gravy, sauerkraut etc.  There are several ladies who still really like to cook and they always will bring extra things.  Since our building is considered an historic building, ( an old converted elementary school) they couldn't put in an actual kitchen because of having to run gas lines for a stove, so we really don't have any way of cooking, except for a microwave.  So, they will either use these big electric roasting pans  or some of the residents will cook things in their own apartments to help out. We do have a dishwasher and nice big fridge and a lot of storage areas.

I feel bad for the activity director as she really works hard to try to think up new things, but when people don';t show up, it gets discouraging.  When I first moved here, I did try to participate in a lot of the activities, but I am kind of burned out now. I have a hard time getting around now, and it just takes me so long to do anything.  For several years, we had a Christmas bazaar, and of course, it was the same ones who did just about everything.  It was very nice, but a lot of work.  For the little bit that we made, a lot of us decided that it just wasn't worth all the hard work.  Plus, since we are a secured building, the management wouldn't let us advertise to the public.  It was all just word of mouth from the residents.  A lot of the residents didn't want outsiders just walking in.  So, that made it extra hard because the ones that live here were trying to get rid of things and didn't feel like they needed anything we were selling.

Once in a while, they will have a White Elephant sale with things that people don't want anymore and they donate them to the sale.  That usually will go over big, but certainly not a big money maker.  And, the activity girl has had several Pocketbook Bingo's.  She goes to several second hand stores in our area every week looking for things that she can make use of here.  Over a period of several months, she will collect a lot of nice handbags.  Now, that usually has good attendance.  Haven't had one for a while now.

I am off to get my haircut in a little while.  I sure hope that will kind of get me out of the doldrums that I have had for the past couple weeks.  Nothing like getting your hair done to boost your spirits up.

Also, Gloria, you asked about the frozen cherries from Schwans.   I usually have a dish of fruit for breakfast, and  will just grab a few of them to add to my fruit.  They do not freeze real solid, so only takes a minute for them to be ready to eat. I like them when they are still partly frozen.  I guess if you let them thaw out, they would be a little mushy.  I usually eat them right from the freezer.  I keep a lot of canned fruit, as I don't get out that much to get fresh fruit a lot of times, so I will mix some sliced peaches, pears and pineapple together and just throw in a couple cherries. They are the big dark red Bing cherries.

I got an order yesterday from Schwans and had a piece of the tilapia fillets for my dinner.  They are really good.  I do like Salmon, but their salmon is a little expensive.  I also ordered the beef pot pies, which I haven't had before.  I usually get the chicken ones, so thought I would try the beef ones.  And, yes, a lot of their items have a lot of salt, but I don't eat them that often.  Four pies come in a box and they will last me more than a month.  Next time, I think I will order some of their hamburgers. I am not a real big meat person, but I have been so hungry for a good hamburger.  I like a McDonald's hamburger once in a while, but haven't even been able to get out to go there, either.

MaryAnn,  hope you aren't getting all that snow that I saw on the weather map that is spreading over the Midwest.  Stay warm.

Jane, wondering how you night shift went last night. ( I think you said you were working last night)..Will probably take a couple weeks to adjust to the new schedule.

Anyway, hope everyone will have a great day.  Didn't realize that I wrote so much.

Mary Ann--I think you are a couple years older than I am.  I have a handicapped hang tag.  That way if I ride with someone who isn't handicapped, we can use it--if the person doesn't let me off at the door.

Well....I hit the wrong key and lost my message....I was thanking you JANE for your very, very good message this morning. Your words meant a great deal to me.

Joy, that little three year old is amazing, and her face tells the story of how she adores her Daddy. I love it !!!

All your posts are like an interesting book to me, and I enjoy turning the pages and learning from you. I don't have to agree with everyone, nor do they have to agree with me, it would be foolish to expect that.

Thank you so much for posting Pat Halbecks message. She has had a long and miserable time of it, and I pray God will be curing her from all ailments in the days to come. We need our Pat back with us again.

It is past time for me to get dressed for the day and down for a bandage change. There are two programs I intend to attend this afternoon. I hope I stay awake to make it down.

Good afternoon, on another rainy day, we saw the sun for a few min. yesterday.
Joan, you are a great leader, and take so much time. You are still a kid to us that are in our 90's

Gloria, I think of you as my cyber neighbor. I know I can see Conn. when I am eating at SoundView rest. But I look over and still wave to RI :) Soultwin, use to be close by in NYC, only 100 mi. away.

Amy, glad you are feeling better, Be careful driving in the snow.

lloyd, glad you are feeling better.

June, My leg is still sore to touch, and is still blue, and I hurt my leg last June.

Larry thanks for the post. about Pat

Joy, When I first was told years ago about my BP being so high, the doctor said only eat real butter, but get whipped and keep it soft, so one pat is enough.
Jane and June a while back you  both wrote great Post about being in here with our Cyber friends. I too have learned so much, I appreciate all that Patricia writes about Alaska.

Joy, Lassies (our ladies club) has a bazaar every Christmas and we make a few $1000. dollars, but outsiders can come, we also advertise on the radio, so when we open at 10AM there is a line waiting to come in. We have a craft meeting every Monday, where we make things to sell. Which in turn we give to the Fire Dept., Ambulance Fund Animal shelter, If any left over we give to Make a Wish. We tray to keep it local.

June--Sorry you lost your message, but you did a good job of reconstructing it.  It's almost time for me to go to the couch and find some ZZZ's.

Linedancer--You folks in your 90s are amazing.

Sandy--This morning was sweater weather here.  This afternoon my a/c is running.

I took a trip down to accounting to question a $733.98 addition on my monthly bill. She said it was from the daily care I get on my leg wound. I recall asking one of the nurses who was paying for all this service and materials used on my leg...she said Rowntree. Now I find it is me..which makes sense really. I'm not going to ask why I wasn't charged for the previous month as it happened two months ago. Thanks be to God that my Insurance picked up the bill for my eight days in the care facility..that could have been three hundred dollars a day. EEK ! Stay well kids !

Joanie, I'm pretty sure there's a good reason for that.  I don't have to carry around the paraphernalia that you do.  That has to slow you down a bit.  I wish I could help you with that.

Janie--The paraphernalia isn't too bad--unless one gets tangled up in it and falls.  My breathing continues to get worse. and I must do a nebulizer treatment 7 times a day.  They take between 15 and 30 min.

Joan, I have 23 years on you; I'm a member of the 90+ club which surprises me that I've reached that age.  Since I live at home, I'm not sure what I would do if I lived in an Assisted Living facility; both June and Gloria D do more than I do but since I don't drive, I don't even think about outside activities.  As far as I am concerned, I'm getting along fine.

Our church had a bazaar until several years ago.  It used to be such a big thing, but I wonder if the younger people don't appreciate handmade things as much as we used to.  You can buy nice things for little money and many people today don't want the handmade things (doilies, for instance).

Our condo used to have breakfasts at a restaurant once a month and that petered out.  We also used to have picnics once a year and we no longer have those.  We started out with older people but now with younger ones who work outside the home, I think they are too tired for extra curricular activities.  As treasurer, I used to know everyone in the complex and I recognized all of the cars as they drove in, but I know very few any more.

My trailer has an island between the kitchen and living room.  I can get to any place in either room from any other place in the trailer.  The main problem is paying attention to which way I got there and make sure I return the same way.  Other wise I can receive a sudden jolt from the canula when I reach the limit of tube.   ;D

Mary Ann--I am 79.  If you had 23+ years on me that would make you 102+.

Jeanne Lee--I understand exactly.  I try to be so careful, but apparently not careful enough when my legs/feet got tangled in the tubing and I took that hard fall.
Title: Re: Soda Shoppe Week of January 22
Post by: JaneS on January 26, 2017, 07:36:23 PM
If I had to remember how I got there and to go back the same way, I'd never remember what i went there for in the first place.  I already have that problem.  Maybe that's why God left me off the hook on that one.  He knew I'd always be tangled up in the tube.   I don't mean to make light of your problems.  I just have to laugh at my forgetfulness.

I went out to dinner with my neighbor/friend tonight.  We never stopped talking so you can all stop worrying about world affairs.  We dealt with that and with local affairs.

Now I'm going to check out the TV and maybe watch some through my eyelids.  I need to make an appt with my chiropractor.  My back has been giving me some twinges and the twinges are turning into great big "OUCHES".  I called her and left a message today and I'm hoping for an appt on Monday if I can wait that long.  Don't know what I did but it was SOMETHING!

Joan, I'd better knock off 10 years of that; 92 is bad enough, let alone 102!  So I have 13 years on you.  I really feel good for my age, it just surprises me that I got here!

Mary Ann, I no longer do anything outside Rowntree, unless I am forced to see my doctor in her office, which requires treatment she can't do here. I am content with what I have here.

Bis, I doubt you will have another fall because of the tubing…once burned twice shy, and you are a wise lady. I can associate in a way, because when I was having an i.v. in the hospital, they gave me enough tubing to do short walking, and I had to remember to turn back in the same direction as where I came from, I sure didn't want to pull that needle out of my arm.

Jane, it seems we don't have to do very much to get these "ouchies". I was going to go down for balance and mobility class, but told myself to take a pain pill and stay home. It makes no sense to try and prove to myself I can do things as before.

I'm going to heat up some left-overs from lunch and just relax for the rest of the evening.

Mary Ann. I'm not even go to contemplate reaching 93, just thankful I made 92. From here on out it is going to be "One Day at a Time Sweet Jesus."

June, the only age goal I had was 92 because my paternal grandmother was 92 and three weeks when she died.  I wanted to pass that age and I have more than done that.  I had a cousin die at 97 but unless I get close, I do not have that as a goal.  His mother, my aunt by marriage, died at 100 and a few months.  He has one sister left and she is 89, to be 90 in March.  I feel at 92 I am more able than my grandmother was, however, she had a much harder life than I did, living in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Mary Ann, I feel you have a great attitude..you are interested in what is going on, and it pleases me that you and Dot live near one another and have your Church and breakfast on Sundays. That is a  boon for both of you. I think I have reached an older age than any of my close relatives, and it is kind of lonely feeling. I'm thankful I have kids, and I'm thankful you have Tom. Well talking about age, I know I am one of the babies on here at age 65 March being 66 but I am aware my MS illness will knock some years off of me...and I am also aware that I have now outlived in age, ( my birth mother ) both of my adoptive parents, ( my father being my birth father, ) all my aunts and uncles, about seven of them, on fathers side, my mother ( not birth mother ) didn't seem to have any relatives that I know just a cousin I once met as a child, I only outlive my father by a few months, so maybe I will be the exception but somehow  dont think I shall be living nor reaching my 80s or 90s if at all I reach my 70s, unless my strength gets me there.....but you know what, our GOD works in mysterious ways, as my late father would always say, and another he would always say was..." never say never..."

Life is good if you have your health...and a little money to enjoy it, also helps...the two go hand in hand...

Forgot to add, we work so long all our working life, and wait for retirement so we can enjoy it, then when we reach there our bad health problems puts a stop to it all, you know what I mean, all those things you wanted to ever do, like bungee jumping, or sky diving, 8) ok I jest....That is when our hospital life kindof takes over, usually after retirement, when we are free with our time to do them.....

Food For Thought

Courting the King’s Favor
By Arie Leder
Scripture Reading: Esther 7:1-7

If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life. . . . And spare my people.
Esther 7:3
Haman, who enjoyed the king’s favor as his most powerful official, was thrilled with the invitation to dine again with Queen Esther and the king. But in the past day he had also endured the shame of publicly honoring his enemy Mordecai, who had also found favor with the king (Esther 6). Soon Haman would have an even greater surprise.
This man who was plotting to destroy all the Jews in Persia had no idea that Queen Esther was also a Jew and a relative of Mordecai. What’s more, if anyone had the king’s favor, it was Esther, and she used her position shrewdly to advocate for her people. “If I and my people were only sold as slaves, I would not have disturbed you,” she tells the king, in effect, “but this vile Haman wants to annihilate us.” As the king’s favor turns to rage against him, Haman knows his only chance is to beg Esther for his life.
Xerxes’ terrible power could snuff out Haman’s life. As such, the king of Persia would be God’s instrument against this enemy of the Jews.
Fearing a king’s power is smart, even wise. But fearing the God who has power over body and soul is wiser (Matthew 10:28).
On the night before Jesus died for our sake, he broke bread and poured wine, saying, “This is my body . . . [and] my blood . . . for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:26-29). Come to the banquet that King Jesus has prepared for all who seek his favor.
For the favor you have given me, Lord, I thank you with body and soul. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Jackie, you mention people working many years, waiting for retirement when they can do what they want etc - I am fortunate in that I have been retired for 30 years and I was able to travel for at least 20 of those years.  Actually, I took my last trip in 2012, not long ago.  Even now, with someone else driving, I get to Indianapolis, Indiana (250 miles away), at least once a year, to visit family.  One of the young people there is getting married in May and I have been invited, so if my health holds out, I will be there.  I do think I've had more ailments in the last ten years than I had in the previous 80, but none of them are serious.

I can feel for you and your MS, I know it holds you back but you have a spirit of trying to overcome the roadblocks.  Before you find "you can't", you try for "I can".  Keep it up.

Hi everyone on a clear but chilly 40 degree morning.  We expect to reach only the low 50's this afternoon.  This is going to be a busy day for me as I am going to drive the 1 1/2 hours to Madison, Georgia to meet with several of my men friend's for lunch.  We have been meeting at the Steak and Shake but today the group wanted to eat at Cracker Barrel so that is where we will meet.  I am looking forward to it as I haven't seen them for probably nine months or more.  The housekeeper will be here while I am gone.

Gloria, are you going to get to keep the different CNA that you had a couple of days ago? On the handicapped placards here in South Carolina (and they were doing it in Georgia) they have a picture of the person from the driver's license.  However, that is not on the handicapped plates, which we have on both cars and no longer have the placards.  Thanks to you and others who remember Pat in your prayers.  She is getting better but keeps pulling different muscles that give her a setback.

Joy, I didn't realize the people went back in the cold water every hour for up to 24 hours.  That sounds like torture to me.

deAngel, one of my pet peeves is eating in a restaurant that serves delicious bread and a frozen pat of butter that won't spread.  We had that at Longhorn Steakhouse earlier this week.  We also use real butter and not oleo and have for many years.

June, does your health insurance cover any of that additional cost to your monthly bill?

Mary Ann, our church has an annual bazaar that raises quite a lot of money.  They also have a bake sale where things sell very quickly and are about the only thing that would appeal to any of the men who attend.

JaneS, sure glad your neighbor and you took care of the world affairs for us.  :) Sure hope you can get in to see your chiropractor.

Amy, hope the weather up your way didn't create problems for you today in getting to the chemo for your husband.

Good morning, Amy.  Safe travel to and from chemo in your bad weather.

Mary Ann--Good morning.  You are fortunate that you are able to travel.

Good morning, Larry.  It's going to be chilly here for several days, so they say.  Safe travel as you go to meet your male friends in Augusta.

All my equipment was working fine when I first posted this morning.  Then I lost the internet and my phone.  I called Spectrum (used to be Brighthouse), and they have already been here and fixed everything.

There was no opening at the chiropractor so I took 2 ibuprophen and did "Our Own Dr. Shirley's Treatment"....the towel soaked in epsom salt water and a heating pad.  I just did it once and I think there is already a bit of ease.  I can at least straighten my shoulders and I'm not walking like Harpo Marx.

I'll do it again later and we'll see.  SHIRLEY, if you look in...Thank You for the info.

Good morning everyone, boy am I late today. Had one of those nights I slept about an hour and woke up. Couldn't get back to sleep so got up and read a few hours and finally went back and woke at 9 am. Cloudy again, Had sun about an hour late yesterday and it clouded up again and all of a sudden the rain was hitting my windows with the wind. I think that wind howling all night is what kept me awake.

JOAN  no one would ever be able to replace YOU.  YOU ARE THE SODA SHOPPE.  Like back in the NEST you were the MAMA BIRD that was in charge. I  wonder who would have the patience you have to talk to everyone who posts here. I have been getting a lot of calls this week too. I do not pick up, I let the machine answer. Most have hung up but a few tried selling something.

JACKIE  like you I am in pain all the time, why bother others about it, nothing they can do and no one likes a complainer. Mentioning it once in awhile is one thing but if that is all  ever talked about who would want to see me coming?

JANE  I am with you, we WANT JOAN.

MARY ANN  my sos are like your Tom. They will not use my handicap tag. They will drop me at the door and go park. They both say that someone else needs that spot more.

JOY  I have not had Pumpernickel bread in a long time, I do like that and a good Rye bread. There used to be a Polish bakery in the next town where you could buy a half loaf and both I enjoy both. Like most other ethnic bakeries here they are gone now. Family owned and the younger generation has no interest in them. It is cloudy here and the wind is still howling. This building is all electric. There is a big kitchen downstairs with 2 refrigerators one is used just for soda. They cook in there and have all the dishes and silverware needed. Well stocked with every thing but food. At Christmas the company that owns the building has a big meal for us, catered mostly. No activity director here. Think I will get those cherries next order. Like you I have mostly canned fruit in the winter months but in summer I love fresh. Thanks for your reply. Thanks for the link, adorable.

JUNE  we might not agree with each other but we do not argue either.

GLORIA de  I can get to Conn. Is less that 30 minutes from where I live. Chia who posts here occasionally lives not far in Mass.  Margarine has too much in it for me, I will use butter any time.

MARY ANN  there are several new people here and I have not even seen them yet. A few passed away and some went to nursing homes. We have 1 99 year old lady who went to Arizona at Christmas. Another 98 year old who goes out twice a day-weather permitting and walks laps in the parking lot, she is almost blind-but very independent. A couple others in their 90's, one is now in Florida.

JEANNE LEE  hope you are good at remembering the path you walk.

JANE  hope you get that appointment for Monday.

JOAN  never had a Spanish omelet so will try a bit of it. Good reply in Chuckles. Thank you for today's goodies.

AMY  hope the day goes good for you and your hubby.

LARRY  I would love to keep that CNA and there is one other I had that I ask the lady in charge if I could have her the other 2 days I am supposed to have help. Both good workers but I am stuck with the regular one. Today there is not much for her to do so I think I will try getting her to cook. As long as I watch what she is doing so she does not mess up it might work.I usually send her to the market on Friday but really do not need anything. Have a safe trip today and enjoy seeing your friends.

How that I have a book here I will close.

GLORIA...
I hope you are not referring to my post as a " complainer..." if you can find any word or sentence where it states I am complaining, just stating some MS facts, and the ones I most suffer with to Marry Ann, re, her posting to me, or anyone else who does not know much about the illness, that might be interested to know more about it...Also having a friendly conversation with Joan over her friend on the same subject...I would really appreciate some respect from you...

Quoting Gloria: " JACKIE  like you I am in pain all the time, why bother others about it, nothing they can do and no one likes a complainer. Mentioning it once in awhile is one thing but if that is all  ever talked about who would want to see me coming?..."

Good Morning Everyone!

Kinda cloudy and very cool here this morning.  They say we might get some lite rain tonite, whatever that means.

Our cleaning lady is here, working away.  She never stops it seems, wont even have/accept a cup of coffee.  Wife has left for a hair appointment and then has an appointment with her eye doctor this afternoon.  Eye doctor, you can depend on being their for at least 2 hours.  Out of that you see her for about 10 minutes, the rest is taken up with techs and waiting.

Amy, hope your day goes well and the roads stay clear and unfrozen.  I know your day will be long.  Maybe a nice lunch.

Janie, hope your aches and pains go away.  I wonder how Shirley is doing.  I hope her cold (?) is clearing up and she is feeling better.  I started to suggest to her she should have headed for the nearest ER.  She didn't sound at all good.  At our age (I am 84) things can happen so fast.  I know you are all the same, but it seems everyday some one we know (in same age group) just ups and passes away. Things to seem to happen fast at our age.

New subject, but have you noticed more and more folks are opting for just a memorial service and not a full blown funeral?  I think it is because funerals (at least here) have become outrageously expensive and so far cremation is so much less.

Joanie, thanks again for the food for the soul and tummy.  Enjoyed both.

Beautiful day here and it will be cooler, too.  Yesterday was nice but with temp. at 73 it was really strange for Jan. 26th.  Better than snow, though.

Hal, Tom and I both chose cremation.  We had a very small memorial service for him with just family and a few close friends and neighbors.  When it is my time I have told my family that it will be their choice as to whether there will be a memorial service or not.  As for me, I don't think that a memorial service is necessary.  And that is a personal choice and in no way is meant to criticize what someone else might choose.  Those who are my family and friends will remember me in their own way.  Also, I've asked my family to "mingle" our ashes and take them to our favorite place in the Blue Ridge mountains and spread them on the wind.  It isn't just the expense that has guided me.  I just personally view funerals as morbid.  Would rather be remembered with love and pleasure rather than with sadness and gloom.

Take care, everyone.

Phyllis, I have much the same thoughts as you do regarding funerals and/or memorial services.  Those are for the living anyway.  I have left instructions for my family as to what I want and if they do otherwise, there is nothing I will be able to do.

Jackie, that paragraph of Gloria's you copied was written about her - she left an "I" out and it changed the meaning, but you notice she did say "me" at the end, not others.  I thought I was complimenting you on your good attitude, but I see you took it another way.  I'm sorry.

Gloria--My sleep was on and off last night, too.  Spanish omelets have salsa in them.

Hi Vanilla-Jackie.

halkel--Yes--funerals are costly.

Phyllis--Ray was cremated (his wish).  However, we had a Mass for him in Arkansas and that spring we had another memorial Mass in Syracuse.

Mary Ann--I think mostly what folks decide to do after a loved one passes away is another "whatever floats your boat".

Joanie, Mary Ann and Phyllis, you are all right, it is what "we may desire" and when left up to family their desire.  I personally have told my family I want to be cremated and my ashes taken to our local national cemetery (Ft. Sam) and if they want a memorial service to hold it at my church.  I am not sure what my wife wants, she keeps changing her mind.
I definitely do not want to be embalmed.  Just a personal thing.

What brought this all to mind was that we were told last night of the death of our friends Mother that attend church with us.

Jackie, I don't know how to really say this without offending, but we all know you have a dreaded incurable disease.  We also understand gives you much pain and distress.  But you must understand many of us suffer a lot of pain and medical problems that are not solvable.  And which I might add the pain is as bad or worst that what you suffer.  Some on our forum have to use walking aids or sticks and still have difficulty maneuvering. So please remember we all care for you and only wish the best for you but also please take the chip off your shoulder because we do, as stated above, do care for you and your health just like we all care for each other and our families.

Or better yet I can always tell you about my political views.

Good Morning dear hearts. A sunny day in Stanton, Ca. but a high wind warning is in effect for two days. It woke me during the night, rushing through the trees. I am going nowhere, so I will pray for those that must be out in the weather.

Larry, I have no idea what my health Ins. covers. So far it has taken care of most of my hospital fees. I have never dealt with any thing in the business line..Ed took care of it all, and now my sons are in charge. I was just a simple housewife, where I feel I did a good job, and I loved doing it.

Bis, what was the cause of your loss of Internet and phone…weather, or appliance failure? I'm glad you were able to have it repaired so quickly.

Jane, I do hope you are feeling fine again. Maybe your body is telling you to really be lazy today, you do so much for so many so often. You need to take care of you.

Sandy, what an adorable dog, and what a lovely pose with its arm around the stuffed toy. I love it !

Gloria, I can't remember even once of a disagreement you and I have had. You are a great friend, and you have been a wonderful mother to your children..I KNOW that to be a fact, because they are so attentive to you.

Hal, you just gave me a good chuckle. We are not allowed to discuss politics here, but I have not heard either of us complain about that fact. Perhaps there should be an M.S. folder for those that suffer that ailment as there is for us that speak political jargon.

Bis, and I for one appreciate that place. Some wise discussions take place, even though we may get "heated" now and then, we learn.

June--My loss of phone service and the internet was failures on the part of my provider.  I called them at 5 a.m. using my cell phone, and they were here at 8 a.m. to provide service.

I still cant get my message across that all I was doing was mentioning the MS symptoms that I personally suffer with...There is nothing to read between the lines that at any point was I complaining...but I guess this is leaving it open for those ones who want to rally around Gloria to say their bit...or if not their bit, I am noting some sarcastic innuendos that a member is posting to someone else about never having arguments, but I will not elaborate, as again this member is admired, plus I will only be seen as if I am reading something that is not there...so I shall keep shtum......It is now plain to see that there will always be some who feel they have to come to a certain members defence, where others, of which I admire, do not get themselves involved...

This is not the first time Gloria has made this sort of comment to me before, there have been a few over the last five or six
years that in the past I have bit my tongue, turned a blind eye, and ignored...So although I do admire your loyalty to her, as no doubt she will convince you, like last time that she didn't mean it that way....I am also saddened of your reaction to me...

Joan .... three hours is such a long time when we depend on the internet/cable service for so much.     I know that it would drive me nuts to have to be with out mine for so long.

I glad that they did come and fix your service for you

Good morning from another warm, sunny day from the Interior! One that makes you honestly believe that Spring is on its way when you know that February, Nature's cruelest month has yet to be. Farrah has been alternating between being affectionate and "Hey! Do I "Know" you? Right now she is birdwatching and checking to see if I'm near the treat closet.

Sandy, I mentioned in Norm's B&T about Cliff, he is very sweet. Sometimes I feel I would like one of everything, but then I remember the period when I had six cats, each very much loved, but there were certain cliques among them and some snapping and avoidance even on good days. I also remember twice paying out over five hundred in medical bills, wincing over the empty wallet, but loving the results! I once figured out that those six cats averaged out,  cost me individually about $47.00 daily. But I was working and lived at the time in a large two bedroom apartment. Nowadays I just wish for a companion cat for Farrah; sometimes she seems so bored and me too weak for some real runabouts!

As to hearing about others ailments or lack there of. We're human, seniors and they are a part of our daily life like it or not. Issues with oxygen or falls, injured or aching body parts, we're human folks, and often need that sounding board. I for one care and want to know that others are doing well or concerned if they are not.  We are not alone; we are family! And yes I agree about politics, money or other red button issues kept out of a friendly gathering.

About regularly writing books in posts. I am often among that group, and I like to read others who post books, especially if they regularly do so. And I miss when that is taken away, or members disappear. There are certain posters I typically look for each day when I come to this site. It is family! One small critique, however, if you change subject midstream, could you start another paragraph? Sometimes I am reading along when a sentence jumps out and I am taken back until I realize it is a new subject.

As to funerals, after organizing and arranging two, I don't want one or see the point. Do you really need a higher grade silk coffin lining or that expensive fluffy pillow? Should we also include a flashlight and some good novels; or yarn and knitting needles?

I have instructions that preclude cost as my body will be sent to a Seattle medical teaching hospital/school, then cremated and returned on their dime and then those cremated remains will be placed in my church's sacirsy with my daughter's and others ashes going back to 1903. This seems both appropriate and respectful.

Good afternoon, Just got home from the skin doctors. Had a few saps, and the bit one on my forehead taken care of. He said good I came in when I did.  Next week foot doc. I guess a lot of our friends here keep them going.  :)

Amy safe trip.

Joan, thanks for breakfast, I felt like a hamburger  with cheese and tomatoe, so that is what I just fixed

Larry, I am sure you enjoyed your meeting. I hope Pat will feel better soon. Has she use her singer yet> I have had mine over 68 years, as I have wrote before, and it still works great.

Gloria< this weather is getting to me, it is cold windy and looks like rain anytime.  In here I guess I am lucky, and I am staying as long as I can, in my place, I can do what ever I want to the inside. Each of our clubs, Lassies and Rec. Club have a President, and other offers  which are voted on every year. Our Lassies President has been there for a few years now, we are very happy with her.

June, sending a hug

Can't remember when I've been so sick and out of it but can't sit at the computer long enough except to read some posts & get off.  My flu started a week ago yesterday with a trip to Dr for antibiotic for sinus infection.  Then 4 days of fever, could not eat anything (such as one morning a single bite of egg sent me to the disposal for lengthy dry heaves)..... My doctor had worked me in that Thursday before & they didn't think I was really sick so when I called a couple days ago to see if I could get a pneumonia check, they suggested I try the new "walk in" ultra or extreme care places.  I just told them I wan't interested but changed my mind a day or so later, after I passed out sitting on the bar stool trying to get a piece of toast down.  One of those times when it seemed funny to me, was laying on the floor looking at the ceiling & thinking, "I don't remember getting down here"..... funny kicked in and next thought was, "guess we can still have "first time" at 82.  I've never passed out before.

No pneumonia but no explaination for back ache.  Nurse wanted me to go on to ER for more tests to see if possible heart or other problem.  By then I was exhausted & opted to go home, she insisted I sign papers saying she had warned me & I refused.  I have cats to feed and have been trying to feed me, ate everything in sight one day & nothing sounds good again except sleep so I am being lazy.  This is one nasty flu bug & from what I'm hearing, NOT one covered by the flu shot.

Janie, I'm glad you've found some relief with my cure all.  I wasn't ignoring you but no energy to type.

The evening after spending the day at the ultra care facility I had a phone call from a neighbor wanting to know if I'd heard about our young neighbor living just west of me.  37 year old was killed on his new Harley when someone ran a light & was in his "space".  He died at the scene.  He was like a gr-son to me as he walked his German Shepherd past my house to the dog park nearly every day.  His wife was on her 2nd or 3rd tour of duty so he was lonesome & I love his dog so he'd stop & visit & I would hug his dog.  Can't tell you how much I will miss him. I heard his wife got back shortly before the accident, the dog loves her as well but I am concerned she won't think to let the dog see him before burial (don't know if he was cremated).  Old LaurenKat did see Cas the morning he died and she never once went back to the bedroom to look for him again..... animals do understand death.

By the way, my little Yamaha Chappie will be the star of the antique motorcycle show the last part of Feb.  I was asked permission & gave it. The guy that gave it new life was pleased it was in good, restorable condition and I gave him no holds barred about cost..... I'm sure I can sell it for more than it would ever have been worth without the loving care.  I don't have any reservations about MY riding but there's no preventing accidents caused by careless drivers.

Sorry this post is all "me-me".... I'm typing off line & back is killing me so will go feed cats & come back to post.

I am going to bed, the back ache hurts no matter how I sit or stand, hopefully it will be better tomorrow.   Hugs to all.  Shirley

Patricia, we are still having "winter" in So. Ca. A high to day of 63, and my ancient body says, "BRRRRRR". Having been born in Nov. in Mn. makes no difference..at 92, I'm cold !
Do you have any idea the age of your Farrah ? I assume she has been altered, so it seems strange she gets over active at times. Maybe she's like me. I ordered a new lamp on the internet. It arrived today and I wore myself out installing it. Got "over-active".
I agree with you about funerals. Money makers those that handle the remains. And added expense for those loved ones remaining.

Gloria de, I thank you for that hug..I felt it, and it was SO welcome. I had a cheese burger for lunch today, and they are so huge I brought half home and will heat it up for supper tonight. I'm so glad you can continue staying in your home Gloria, it is truly the best place to be. I have given away so many things in my last two moves, and I do miss them at times. They were of no value to anyone, but a part of my past life.

Janie, I can see when we get to Heaven, you are going to be one of God's "workers", whether it is knitting Angels wings or sewing gowns for those of us "retirees", you will still be our Janie, and I am quite sure there are loving doggies up there that will need t.l.c.

Shirley, I wish I had an instant remedy for you.  You are so giving of your help when anyone needs it.  My back is not completely well but at least I can navigate.  I have an appointment with the Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist next Monday and I think I'll make it until then.  I'm going to Shirley's Voodoo with the Epsom salts tomorrow again.

June, thanks for the kind words.  I'm sure there will be "chores" for all of us to do.  God gave us all some talent to help and how we use it is up to us.  He will have you going around encouraging all of us to do our best and to think for ourselves.  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you

I was supposed to go to lunch with my granddaughter who lives in Phila. today.  When she texted to tell me she was on the way, I had to tell her I'd called off work and wasn't able to go to lunch.  So she stopped and picked up a pizza and brought it here.  We had a lovely hour and a half and some good pizza and conversation.  It's so nice to have them one on one sometimes.  She has turned into such a lovely and lovable young lady.  She'll be here for the weekend and I hope to see her again before she returns to Phila.

Now, I bid you all Good Night and may God bless us, every one!

You worry the fire out of all of us.  Now git to gitten and git it taken care of, that is an order from this old hairy legged Master Sergeant.  Got it!

Shirley:  Hal has written a perfect message to you - you need to have some tender loving medical attention.  Hugs to you.

Amy:  The quilt pattern is from a magazine and actually was not written very well so it took a lot of my time to figure what it meant.  There are block of the same fabric that when placed will look like a large V of blocks throughout.  Everything in the quilt is muted to dark gray pattern - because our g-daughter says her favorite colors (now) are gray and gray.  Such a pickle!  I am stuck now with no place to hang it to look at it before sewing - the floor isn't working because one knee is screaming at me every time I try.  So it goes.  But - you have a big load on your mind with health issues and your good buddy needs tender care.   Sending you a super hug!

Larry and Gloria:  Wishing you could have a taste of the split-pea soup.  I never use recipes and this one turned out pretty good.

Jackie:  Sorry about your daily pain.  My hubby has daily shoulder pain and driving aggravates it.  I am most fortunate but have gone through a few things.  Take care.

Joan:  You look the same every time I see you!  Young at heart!   :)

ANGELFACE....
..thank you for your post, and I sincerely thank you, as you were the only member who posted in my support, ( so good to know you genuinely care about folks and want to listen, good to know there are people like you that exist, and yes I fully agree..).... Now I am aware of the members who are quick to turn their backs on me and support the member who made the nasty comment, and not once, as last time I gave her the benefit of the doubt.....as we say..." we live and learn..."   Now I shall continue.." putting myself first, and looking after me....." and only support those, who support, and are genuine to me...again," we live and learn..." The support is rarely ever there when one needs it the most...these last few days have been a real eye opener in Soda Shoppe, just waiting to see who else was quick in taking the opportunity of " sticking the knife in," as the old saying goes........

CAROL...
..thank you...but as previously mentioned it wasn't posted as a " complaint.." just a fact..and maybe to educate those who knew nothing or very little about the illness...it was there to read only if they wanted to...But yes I am human and I dont like this particular illness one bit...

Quoting: Shirley...  " Sorry this post is all "me-me "...
...go ahead Shirley, I care and I am listening....

CHUCKLES

In A Pickle

My three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, “Look at the fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she was eating a juicy pickle at the time,  I  thrust her contaminated hands under the faucet and washed them with antibacterial soap.

Food For Thought

The Consequences of Folly
By Arie Leder, Friday
Scripture Reading: Esther 7:5-10

Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was reclining.
Esther 7:8
As Haman begs the queen for his life, she is reclining on a couch. We know that Haman is pleading with her, but when the king returns, still fuming with anger, it looks to him as if Haman is now trying to molest the queen!
Esther does not try to correct that impression. She abandons Haman to the consequences of his folly, and he is soon impaled on the pole he has intended for Mordecai.
Fools are incorrigible: “A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools! . . . As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly” (Proverbs 26:3, 11).
Haman, the enemy of the Jews, was an intelligent man. He shrewdly arranged the affairs of state, even managing to get the king to decree death for all the Jewsâ€"because he hated one Jew in particular: Mordecai. Haman was smart, but he was also a foolâ€"and fools seldom know when to stop.
Fools confide in their management skills; they’ve got all bases covered and keep friends in the right places. They behave as if “there is no God” (Psalm 14:1). They forget that “the Lord works out everything to its proper end, even the wicked for a day of ¬disaster” (Proverbs 16:4).
As we interact with people each dayâ€"whether they are family members, neighbors, coworkers, or others, let us always seek to act wisely.
Thank you, Lord, for the wisdom of Christ that has overcome the foolishness of the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I slept better last night than I have in ages.  I broke down and took 2 Ibuprophen before I went to bed.  I'm sure that was a good part of the reason I slept better but I still don't like to rely on medications for anything.  The fact that I took them means that my back is hurting worse than I care to admit.  But I'm forcing myself to stand up straight and to walk straight, no matter what.

I wish everyfriend a good day.  Do what you must to make it so.  It's yours and yours alone so fill it with exactly what you wish.

Good Morning Everyone!

Well I am up and got to get myself cleaned up to head out to the church for men's breakfast.  Our cook, Jerry, fixes a really good breakfast for the tummy like the food for soul.  Hot biscuits, patty sausage, hash browns and eggs with plenty of hot coffee and good companionship and someone always brings some nice fresh rolls.  Oh, boy making myself hungry.

Must be kinda cool out, the heater keeps coming on to warm the house.

I gotta get a move on.  Everyone have a great day.

Good morning everyone, another cloudy one. Beginning to wonder what it would be like to wake to a sunny morning.

JACKIE  no I wasn't talking about you.

HAL  I try to get the first appointment with my eye doctor after their lunch. Even then I am there 1½ hours. He had several others in different rooms at the same time. I have told my family for years I do not want a wake or a funeral service. Nothing. I want to be cremated and I could care less what they do with the ashes. I will not be there.

PHYLLIS  like you we really have not had winter weather here. Altogether I don't think we had 10 inches of snow. And no days down to zero or below. Last week my son had a tick on him, in mid January they should all be frozen dead.

MARY ANN  thank you. I do not pick on others. I only know if I complain all the time  no one would want to see me coming.

JOAN  so salsa makes an omelet Spanish? Gosh then my son made Spanish stuffed peppers. Will have to tell him that.

HAL  better to have ashes scattered to the winds than  in a casket in the ground in a cemetery where no one goes. NO politics, PLEASE. We have been through a year of nothing else.

JUNE  the wind has been whistling around this corner the last 2 nights. During the day I don't  it but at night it keeps me awake. My dear June, you are anything but simple. You may have been a housewife but you are a smart lady, too. Thank you, I did the best I knew how raising my children. At times when I am with one of them they will talk about some of the things they learned from me. Makes me feel like I did something right. I just thank God they are more like me and nothing like their father.

JOAN  you get better service for you cable, etc, than we get from Cox.

JACKIE  if I have something to say to you I will say it, I do not use innuendos.

PATRICIA  the fancy coffins  IMHO are such a waste.

GLORIA de  last night I was thinking it has been a long time since I had a hamburger. At the time I was thinking even a Burger King one would taste good. Like you I like sliced tomato on mine. Sun just broke through the clouds and warmer than normal for January.

SHIRLEY  so good seeing you here. I had been wondering if you were sick. Did not think you had taken a trip. I pray you are on the road to recovery now. So sad about your neighbor. I hear things like that on the news here at times.  Take care of yourself. A back that hurts is no fun. Now call your family and let them know how sick you are. You need someone to help you for a change.

JANE  wish Shirley's magic would work on my back. Glad it helped you.

HAL  love your message to Shirley. You said what I was thinking.

CAROL   I never used a recipe for pea soup either and it always came out good.

JOAN  breakfast looks yummy this morning. Thank you for all today's goodies.

LLOYD  at least your BS is better this morning. Hope you feel better soon.

AMY  glad yesterday went good. Wonderful, you did not have to dance with the snow blower when you got home.

JANE  standing up straight is something I could not go for awhile. The shots I had a few weeks ago helped and it feels good not to stand up right. I will get more on Tuesday and hope they help even more.

HAL  hope you enjoyed your breakfast.

Hi everyone.  It is a glorious January day here in South Carolina. It is currently 43 degrees and will only get to about 53 degrees this afternoon but it is nice an sunny.  I had a fine trip to Madison, Georgia yesterday to meet 5 of my friends for lunch.  The only problem encountered was a fairly long delay due to road work and taking the Interstate down to 1 lane.  However, I got there with about 5 minutes to spare.  We visited and ate lunch for about 90 minutes and I got home before 2 pm.  I have been busy this morning as have more sausage muffins in the oven for Pat after fixing here scrambled eggs with all the trimming for breakfast.  In a few minutes we will head to COSTCO so Pat can get her new glasses and while she is doing that I have three items to pick up that we need.  When I get home I will fix my frozen fruit.  I think that will be it for today.

Jackie, I learned a lot from your posting of the symptoms MS folks have with the disease.  Thanks for sharing that information.  Don't forget we love you as a member of our online family and each of us must decide what we are going to write on these discussions.  We each have our own ways and opinions and perhaps would not write something someone else has written or expressed as an opinion.

JaneS, hope Doctor Shirley's treatment helped your back.

Gloria, those sleepless nights can be very annoying.  I am fortunate in that I usually am not bothered with them but do on occasion and keep laying there thinking I will go to sleep.  Hope your CNA was able to do some decent cooking for you yesterday.

Hal and Phyllis, I am like you and it will be up to my wife and son whether there will be a memorial service for me or not.  We paid for our cremations several years ago with the Georgia Cremation Society.  That freezes the price and our experience with them when Stacey passed was outstanding.  Scott had the same experience with the South Carolina Cremation Society.  All it took was a telephone call and they take care of the rest and it is so much better than dealing with a funeral home and incurring that very large expense.  However, I understand that we each have our own feelings about cremation. Our church will soon build a  columbarium and we plan on getting two spots for Pat and I and using one for Stacey as each niche will hold the remains of only two people.

June, glad you don't have to worry about things like health insurance and that your son takes care of that for you.  I am sure you were an excellent housewife.

deAngel, Pat has not spent much time on her new (old) Singer Featerweight nor in her sewing room.  I am hopeful that as Spring comes she will feel more like doing so.  However, she really likes it and says it sews beautifully what little she has used it.

Shirley, hope you weren't hurt falling to the floor when you fainted.  Apparently many people are now sick with the flu across the nation.  I sure hope you are about over the flu.  Did you let someone drive you to the clinic?  How sad about the 37 year old neighbor.  My son has decided, I think, to sell his motorcycle and I find that wonderful news.  Fortunately his accident on it was in his driveway on slick leaves but it has caused him physical problems.

Amy, glad you had a good trip yesterday and that you have a kind neighbor who looked after your driveway while you were gone.

I think you might enjoy these two short videos as they are neat:

Pat is ready to head to COSTCO so will see you all tomorrow at least in my thoughts.

Good morning, Joan and all the other morning people.

It is another cloudy day with some wind.  Not as bad as it has been.  Haven't heard the full weather report yet today.

Joan, I will pass on the hash, but will enjoy the poached eggs.  Haven't had them for a while.,  Along with some fruit and my coffee.

Don't want to keep harping on a certain conversation, but  I have gone back several days and I cannot find anyplace where ANYBODY said anything nasty about anybody.   Time to let it all get put aside,.

This is a great group of friends and like Gloria mentioned before,  this group really helps to make my day a lot more pleasant. Something to look forward every day. I might not make comments every day, but I do read all the messages and enjoy everyone's stories about their lives and their daily activities.  Without my computer,  I am a lost soul. LOL   (However, when I am without it, it does give me an excuse to do some other things that I usually let go)

Larry, I only watched a little bit of the Polar Plunge this morning, as I got up a little late.  However, it is  only a small group of participants who do the 24 hour plunge.  Mostly local TV reporters and some local celebrities from some of the sponsors for the plunge.
They started at 10 a.m. Friday morning and went in once an hour for the next 24 hours. That was over at 10 a.m. this morning. I didn't hear the totals so far, but they get a great response.  One of the announcers that used to do the plunge has been retired for a couple years, but he always comes back to be the announcer every year now. He is in his 70's and makes a big deal about how cold it can get, especially about 3 a.m.  It looks like they all have a lot of fun with it.  Our Md. State Police is a big sponsor and has great participations.  Lots of school groups get together for it, also.

I  have made a list for my son for the grocery store.  Just don't feel up to going myself.  Not sure what I will get into today.  Saturdays and Sundays around here are very quiet and you hardly see anybody the whole week end.  I know I will be reading for a while.

I didn't sleep very well last night, so I am sure I will get a nap in sometime during the day. Seems like as soon as I start reading, I fall asleep.

Shirley and Jane, do hope that both of your back's are feeling better this morning.  A back ache is not fun.  Hurts to move in any direction.  And, I do hope that anybody else who isn't feeling all that great this morning, will have a more enjoyable afternoon.

Have a good day.

Joy

Our weather is pretty much what Larry is having.  It got cold here last night but the sun today is bright, warm, and beautiful even though the temps are staying in the 40's.

Sorry to hear of your scary bout with the flu, Shirley.  I hope very, very much that you are feeling better with no more fainting.  Lots of flu around here, too, and it seems to be a more severe kind this year.

When I was a kid in high school one of the common sayings was "Oh, my aching back!" whenever we were exasperated with something/someone.  Back then it was just an expression but now if I, or any of us, say it we really mean it!  I hope that all of the aching backs are so much better today.

Gloria, ticks!  Ugh!  I really hate those things.  Over the years I've found a couple on me after I was doing yard work/gardening and it really gave me the willies.

Breakfast is long past and it is almost time for lunch.  I get slower and slower every day.  <sigh>

Gloria--I'll try and send you some sunshine.:)  Yes--if you order a Spanish omelet in a restaurant, it's made with salsa.  My cable provider recently changed ownership, and we seem to get faster service.  I pray your upcoming shots help you even more.

Larry--Your temp is about like ours and tomorrow is supposed to be even colder.  Glad you had a good trip to Augusta yesterday.  Thank you for the links--both were enjoyable.

Joy--I can't imagine participating in the Polar Bear Plunge--I know it's for a worthy cause.

Phyllis--I've heard that this year the flu vaccine doesn't cover several of the more virulent kinds of flu.  I hate ticks, too.  Even though we gave our dogs medicine, I was always inspecting them to be sure there were no ticks.

ANGELFACE...
...regarding coffins I too am in agreement with you over not having money wasted over any expensive wooden coffin, there are so many alternatives now to choose from, which come under " green, or eco friendly, from cardboard to wicker " burials, cremations.." of which I plan on opting for....besides at the end of the day I am opting for cremation so why have money wasted when an expensive coffin just gets burned to ashes...Unlike years ago we have such a variety of choices today...All I request is my ashes are scattered near to birds and trees...I want to be as free as a bird...oh forgot to add, with my three babies ashes, Megan Petra and Benji, they come with me...

Good morning from yet another snowy, warmer Interior! I hope all who have been ill with colds and achy backs are feeling better today.

June, Farrah was found about twenty eight miles from here in the woods a mile or so outside of the city of North Pole. She had a chip that was traced to a family in Anchorage who had given her away several years ago and had no idea how she ended up four hundred miles north of Anchorage. They did not want her so she was given to Pet Pride's chapter here. Pet Pride is a national cat rescue organization.

Her chip said she was born on September 12th, 2012 and that she had been spayed. She was terrified of humans, defensive and attacking other animals and was shutting down. They called me because I have had other cats similar but not as damaged as Farrah was. The first two months were basically leaving her alone other than speaking in a pleasant calm voice and leaving her daily fresh food and water. She is fine now, happy and energetic. The vet and most feline literature will tell you that cats, evolution wise were domesticated thousands of years after dogs and are not a pack species as dogs are. They belong to the same type of group as horses and walrus with one dominant male and several females.

They build up an increase of what is termed, "Prey Instinct," inside the house as they are natural hunters like all of the cats, wild or domesticated. That frenzied dashing about, usually at night, is due to a chemical release of that built up instinct. Punishment will not stop it, only to make the cat neurotic or worse.

Regarding achy backs my arthritis tends to flair up worse when the air pressure fluctuates and I wonder if it may be aggravating other conditions some of you may have? And my go to cure for colds and flu, besides rest and staying home, is lots of hot tea with honey and lemon. And if you wish to indulge in a little tipple of vodka or rum in that tea, well whose to know and it will make you feel better!  :D  And now I'm hanging up my shingle.

Regarding funerals, if someone wants a memorial service fine, but a funeral to me is excessive. I do know that my Dad's held at the Elks Club was well attended as was my Mom's at church, but that was because they were long term, involved community members.

Jackie, that sounds lovely, but many places in this country prohibit spreading someone's ashes in water or on lands without following several detailed restrictions. My daughter is in the sacristy of our church and I want to be where her ashes are and it is a practice that goes back for thousands of years.

Everyone stay happy, healthy and whole!

Vanilla-Jackie--My husband was cremated and is buried in a cemetery in New York State.  His and my granite headstones are in place.  When my time comes, I will be buried next to him and only the date of my death will have to be added to the headstone.

angelface--Interesting information about your Farrah and cats in general.

Hi Mary Ann.

Janie--I believe that everything will be perfect in heaven.

Jackie, I know we don't have those places here although they might in the States. Here there are some different types of cemeteries, and two are on the Historial Register and no longer accepting new burials.

One graveyard has several restrictions and to me is regimented and somber. Another one has a more loving atmosphere, and you can leave items on various graves. We have Columbariums at various graveyards, but only the two Catholic and Episcopal churches still have places in their sacistries for ashes.

Janie, I can picture you, sitting on a cloud, knitting away as the cloud behind gets wispier and smaller... :)

Good afternoon, on this cool, gloomy day again

Joy like you I come in and read, I enjoy reading about everyone's daily
lives

Gloria, I hope your son did not get bitten, but the tick was just crawling around.  I have had lick fever twice in the last few years.

Larry, I miss coming down to SC every year.

Patricia, Being I live in a mobile home I have a long hall for Taffy to run up and down in, which she does all the time. This week she keeps following me around and talking.  I have always said I think she has a lot of Siamese in her. We have had 3 Siamese cats.

My daughter, Cathy picked me up to go to the Amish store.  Today was their 20% off day on all their everyday low prices.  Their prices are almost always less than half what you would pay anywhere else and then they have 2 days when the give an additional 20%.  I took my 2 ibuprophen and my $25.00 gift card and got myself some great buys.  Among other things I got 2 slices of of ham that will each be 2 meals for 29 cents each.  Potato chips for $1.20 for a large bag, a pound of ground turkey for 89cebts.  This was a sale NOT to miss.  I got 4 bags of organic dog treats for 35 cents each.  Even I can't believe the prices.

I have boneless pork chops cooking to go with my scalloped potatoes.  And the doggies are asking for their supper.  So I'll be back later.

Gloria de., I wish I had a long hall for Farrah, I have a short one off the living room, probably five foot. There are three doors, the bathroom across from the bedroom and a small room with shelves at the end of the hallway. Farrah will run about and leap probably four foot in between runs from table to kitchen island to living room table by the window and back, so she is making lopsided figure eights!  ::)

Your stuffed squash and N. England chowder sound wonderful to me. Is N. England the one with red rather than white? Last night I followed FlaJean's recipe for a type of soda bread and had that with a green salad and a portion of a pork roast.

Jane, we don't have Amish here that I'm aware of, just Mennonites farming in Big Delta and Delta Junction. But we do have quite a selection of Asian groceries and restaurants available.

A memory....  In northern New York State, there was only one clam chowder - New England style made with a milk/cream broth.  I had never heard of any other.  I married into a family in New Jersey and after I'd been there about a year a brother-in-law, for a special family occasion, volunteered to make his "famous" clam chowder.  My mouth was watering all the week before and members of the family raved about what was to come.  Imagine my shock when I discovered the pot contained what to me was only vegetable soup with clams.    :yikes:  It was good and tasty, but it sure wasn't what I considered clam chowder.   ;D

Janie--HE did tell us so.

Linedancer--It's cool here, too.  What wonderful neighbors you have.  The food sounds delicious.

Janie--Wow--what wonderful buys you get at the Amish store.  Your supper sounds so good.

Angelface--We don't have any Amish stores around here either.

Jeanne Lee--I wouldn't consider what your BIL made clam chowder either.

We have an Amish community about 40-50 miles north of here.  It never occurred to me when I did my own shopping to drive up there to see if there was a store - I assume they do have a store.  I would not drive 15-20 miles south of here to do any shopping, so why would I drive 40-50 miles for groceries!  I have an idea there are ethnic groceries in the south end, but, as I wrote, I would not drive that distance to shop.  I have two supermarkets within two miles from here, but I have been considering trying those food deliveries that are advertised as I understand they have good food.

I don't have a long hallway for the cat, but he does race up and down the stairway to the lower level.  He also races in the short hallway I have that leads to my bedroom.  I can hear him coming whenever he does that, otherwise I don't know he's around until he jumps on my bed in the middle of the night.

There is a larger, wider list for all breeds of dogs but this one is about working dogs and yes there is always that special one you have that is smarter than all the rest!  While the 10 breeds are consistently faster to learn (they can learn a new command in less than 5 seconds) and more obedient (they obey 95% of the time), Coren did mention a loophole. There are exceptions in every breed, he said, and a lot comes down to proper training.

01  Border collie
02  Poodle
03  German shepherd
04  Golden retriever
05  Doberman pinscher
06  Shetland sheepdog
07  Labrador retriever
08  Papillon
09  Rottweiler
10  Australian cattle dog

MaryAnn, I wouldn't drive a significant distance to shop for food either.  The Amish Store is just in the next small town over from ours.  It's about a 10 minute drive for us but lately, I haven't had to drive it.  My daughter takes me.

I think I need a cup of coffee and I'm going to go make some.  I know, I know, it keeps people awake but it doesn't seem to have that effect on me.  Back in college when everyone was drinking coffee to stay awake to study for tests, I could drink as much as I wanted and still fall asleep over the books.

Have a good evening Everyfriend!

Jane, I did the same thing last night, made a pot of coffee to have a cup before bed.  Calms me down & I sleep like a baby....

Back is still killing me & think it's from coughing.  Still just snacking of whatever sounds good, my DIL tried to send me home made chicken soup but nothing sounded good but Campbell's broth.  My kids have each called at least twice a day to see if they could do anything but just takes time to get through all the stages.  I didn't go to my neighbor's funeral today & will miss the RV show tomorrow.  Not up to the walking or the crowds, I know I am not contagious have not been this sick since the Asian flu of the '60s.

Been trying to keep up with everyone but no comments tonight.  Beware, everyone, this flu is not covered by the shot so keep your anti-bacteria wipes handy!  Hugs to all.... Shirley

Amy dear heart, you do have good, good neighbors, because you ARE one. I am so happy for you.

Hal, A beautiful way to start your day. !!!!

Gloria, my kids give me so much more than I felt I ever gave them, but they deny that. So I think we both must have done the right thing. In my experience Gloria, after all these years I have accepted the fact that the father my children had was not able to give more soft affection to them than he was able. Very sad situation, but again, i think they grew stronger because of it, so many times good comes from bad.

I was just thinking…when I was young I never heard of the word Cremation. Always funerals, even for the indigent. And yet I have learned that the Indians, or some tribes, placed their dead on a high platform and set the whole thing on fire. So cremation is not a "new" thing at all.

Joy, thank you for your good post, it is a pleasure to read your posts. Contrary to your night, I had a great sleep but after I was awake for about an hour, it all went down hill. Just had no energy at all, so spent most of the day in bed, reading and napping.

Phyllis, I have not seen a tick since moving to Ca. but we did have them in Mn. I wonder if climate has anything to do with their life-style.

Patricia, thank you so much for the history of Farrah. She has had quite a variety in her lifetime. It makes it more understandable why she hid under the bed when you first adopted her.Like she was seeking permanency.  You have a very kind heart and a whole bundle of understanding and patience with your feline friends.

Gloria de, I'm so happy that you have such great neighbors. They really do love you.

Janie, sounds like you had a beautiful day with the exception of the blasted back pain. I pray it leaves as suddenly as it appeared.

Jeanne Lee, to me Clam Chowder is only white and creamy, and I love it. Never had it till I came to Ca. Mn. did not have clams in my day.

Shirley,  you sound so much better than the last time you posted.  Guess I'll cancel my travel reservations.  ;)
I had meant to mention straining the broth from Chicken noodle soup; that's what I want when I have the coughing/sore throat/etc. crud.
Good idea not to get out to the funeral and especially not to the RV show.  You may not be contagious but your immune system may be more susceptible to any germs floating around in the crowd.

Several friends here have been dealing with similar ailments - and I'd also heard that the current flu shot doesn't help. Seems as if some alien strain always manages to sneak in around the meds in the shot for the current year.

I'd had to put the tax stuff away last week because the housecleaner was here.  Now it's out on the work table again but I managed to find enough sidetracks  this afternoon that I never did get around to doing anything with it. (Imagine that!  ;D )

Have had my shower and am ready to watch the next episode of "Monarch of the Glen" on Netflix.  Hard to limit myself to one a night but I don't want to get in the habit of "binge watching".  I'm bad enough about reading "just one more chapter" of a book.

Sleep well, Everyfriend and have Pleasant Dreams.

Yep June, as a child I can remember the older folks talking about cremation and it was not approved of by most.  I had a talk with my pastor about the subject and he told me it was not spoken of in the bible, one way or the other.  He saw nothing wrong with it if that what someone preferred.

June it was a great way to start the day.  Great fellowship, great food and a good talk by one of the group. His testimony.
Oh I left one thing out, Jerry also fixed bacon and someone not only brought cinnamon rolls but also someone brought donuts.  I had neither, thank you very much.   :crazy2:

Shirley, soak yourself in some of that Epson Salts, it might help the old back and it cant hurt the cold.  I heard on the news tonight that the flu was picking up steam and they wanted everyone to be sure they had their shot, that it would cover the flu going round.  Then they added.......mumps are coming on strong.  And they were urging folks to get the shot for them.  Lord help us.

Nite, nite, God Bless and Sweet Dreams...
