Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

Oldiesmann: Found them. They're on the CP site: https://www.christianphotographers.com/recipes/recipeindex.html

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Soda Shoppe Week of July 31

Hi everyone.  It is an overcast morning following a night where we got 1 1/2 inches of rain that was much needed and appreciated.

When I went to my meeting before noon yesterday I saw that there was work being done on the bridge over the Savannah river east bound on I-20.  There was already at last a two mile backup of traffic and more building all the time as I-20 gets a lot of traffic, especially big trucks.  So I decided to return home by an alternate route that was several miles further but where I kept going.  In the paper last night I read that the traffic backup, where there was only one lane across the bridge open, had gone on all day and evening.  I was certainly glad I had taken the alternative route home.

Nothing special on the schedule for today.  I just got back from picking up a prescription for Pat and a  few items at our local Walmart.  I am done for the day and will have to consider next time using the electric cart again.  Pat asked me to get her walker from the garage this morning as her sciatic nerve problem is worse.  I knew she cried out each time she turned in bed last night, at least while I was awake.

Amy, I am pretty sure the red flowering trees are crepe myrtle and see that Phyllis has already indicated so.  They are very abundant here in Georgia and South Carolina.  One of my neighbors across the street has one that has been in blooms for weeks and is still beautiful.  We also have a small one that has also stayed in bloom for a long while.

I am going to beg off from further comments today as it is about lunch time and then looking forward to laying down for a couple of hours and try to get some energy back.

This is a quote slash copy from Jackwv on the Computer site. I thought it might be of particular interest to some.

" This is good to hear for those that did not upgrade.  Got it from How to Geek site.

Windows 7 will be supported with security updates until January 14, 2020, while Windows 8.1 will receive security updates until January 10, 2023. You can always find these support dates on Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle fact sheet web page.

So, if you’re still using Windows 7 or 8.1 on your PC, that’s fine. They’re still officially supported, and Windows 7 in particular is widely used in businesses. Leave Windows Update enabled and you’ll keep getting security updates until 2020 or 2023."

Mary Ann

Joan, everyone, and I mean everyone, is taller than I am.  Annie at 20 is at least a head taller than I.

Gloria, I get disgusted with this computer too (HP).  If I try to go to a second page of a story, Firefox does not respond.  And I get a message about script (continue, debug and something else.  It has to do with Flash Player and I need that to view Grand Haven.  My font gets larger, then smaller.  Tom is a reluctant helper because he is a Mac person and wants me to get a Mac.  I am not sure I want to buy another computer.  I am more willing to have my GT HP repaired but it is several years old - and is it worth it.  I can sense your frustration!  It takes one to know one.

Patricia, I'm afraid to leave my Update open because W-10 might be installed.  That may not be true since July 29, but I don't trust W-10.  It already upset two computers.

For those with Windows10, there is a huge update coming today that is the largest yet.

"Windows 10’s second big update, dubbed the “Anniversary Update”, arrives on August 2, 2016. This is a huge update that touches every corner of the operating system. It includes many, many more changes than the November update did."

June Drabek

Good Morning all, I had such a good sleep last night I didn't wake up till after seven o'clock. My first program for the day starts at 10 o'clock, so I have less than an hour to get ready. Have to eat, make bed, wash, and dress, so I will be back later. June
As long as we are here, let's dance.

Mary Ann

Patricia, since today is August 2, I think I'll let Win 10 upgrade on the two computers it goofed up but I don't have it on this computer (Win7) and I won't let it on here.

Larry--Those traffic backups are the pits.  Right now I hear thunder, but don't see a drop of rain.  I am sorry Pat is having so much pain.

angelface--Thanks for the computer/Windows info for those that need it.  I already use Windows 10 so guess it will update tonight.

Mary Ann--I used to be 5'7", but in my old age have shrunk about 3".

Lloyd--I have my fingers crossed.  So far I have had no trouble with Windows 10.

June--Enjoy your activities.

Goodafternoon. I have all the windows open! was in the 60's when I got up, but 92 humidity.  Wind out of the N. East  also had rained. Things are starting to look green again.

Gloria, you have to stay with us.  I feel like you are a neighbor, from easteren LI to RI is not that many hours.  :coolsmiley:

Amy, crepe myrtle is beautiful and as Larry said they bloom a long time.  they are everywhere in Charleston,  the last time we were there my husband brought a small one. Planted it but it never grew to much. My neighbor has a large one, but it still does not look as pretty as the ones down south. Maybe NY is too cool.

Jenny, I being a golf nut  ( We played in the snow with a pink ball) I know how proud you are of Mark. By the way that was my youner sons name.  I like seeing that Jordan Spieth and Rickey Fowler stayed around to see Jim Walker win.

June, I just enjoy reading you post. I have said before I love your use of words.

Yesterday I went to the hematologist and I am back to getting my shot every two weeks.

Joan, I would enjoy and omelet for lunch.

Mary Ann...

If I were you,  (of course I am not),  I would get myself
a Mac,  and  would be assured not to be aggravated and
frustrated any longer.       Tom would help me and
I would be FREE..

Yes,  I know that they are expensive,  but
I deserve the best .

(Then I could throw those other two in
the closet  or give them to charity
and enjoy my computer work and play. )

I'm like Joan, I received the Windows10 update on the first day it was offered and never had an issue related to W10. When the computer I was using, 16 years old, began failing. I ordered a refurbished with W7Professional on it for a better deal. I became so frustrated with W7Pro.,  that I went back to W10 ASAP.

I cannot tell you why others are having issues, and I only know my account. However, upon switching to a MAC.,  you lose several programs that only work on Windows, and you have to begin learning a new system, programs and issues all over again.

I have used Macs and Windows both on jobs and they are totally different.

I have been watching the two river cams and surprisingly on one I caught a drug deal, or  something was given after cash was received or that is what it seemed without a zoom available. Now they are having a group photo of a tourist group in front of the fountain.

https://fairbanksalaska.com/goldenheart/

On the Nenana River Cam, you have to refresh the page, but the river is seen rapidly rising, and there have been bears moving along ahead of that. And the train going along on the opposite bank.

Patricia I forgot to ask you. What dose it say about Vista, I was given this PC about 4 years ago from a friend, who was getting a new one.  I have no idea how old it is.

Thanks for putting in hat last quize.  Once in a while I know the answer. They are fun

From How to geek;

"From an article by Martin Brinkmann over at ghacks.net:

If you are running Chrome on a Windows XP or Vista machine, you will have received a notification by now on the browser's new tab page that informs you that support for that browser will end soon.

The message reads "This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates because Windows XP and Windows vista will no longer be supported".

Google announced back in November 2015 that it would end support for XP and Vista, and several other operating systems in April 2016.

The announcement may have come as a surprise for users running Windows Vista, as the operating system is still supported by Microsoft until April 2017.

Windows is not the only operating system that is affected by this, as supports ends for some Linux and Mac versions as well.

The following systems are no longer supported by Google Chrome as of April 1, 2016.

Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Windows Server 2003 and 2008.
Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.
Any 32-bit version of Linux.
Ubuntu 12.04.
Debian 7.
The article goes on to explain in detail what this means for users of those systems, what options they have, and offers helpful links.  You can read the entire post via the link below:

This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates - gHacks Tech News

Google ended support for Chrome on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003, 2008, Mac OS X 10.8 and older, Linux 32-bit, Ubuntu 12.04 and Debian 7 on April 1, 2016.

So far not been the best 3 days. Starting Sunday. Went to Indy. to pick up GD and children. That was good. (They really grow in a year). Took to Daughters house which is 38 miles from me. On leaving I backed out on her driveway and hit the last big stone with a point sticking out  on their Stone wall. (Sun was in my eyes. ) It got my back tyre ,tearing a big hole in it. Went flat right away. Lucky I found I had a doughnut tyre not used in my car. Took awhile to put on. Also made my muffler sound even louder. Tyre made it back to my home. But just as it was out of air.  And me out of gas. 8pm at Walmart's getting new tyre on. Ran around to muffler shop and they took care of putting a full system on. Boy was the old one full of holes. rusty. Not many have the older Flex hoses. Also don't like to work on them. Full Check up and Oil change done now. So all in All things should be great. Will drive the car longer now. I even took it and got it all washed and cleaned out. Feel good driving it. Now for a good time for  last of this week. Other than it is going up into high 90s again. Hope the kids are  in a mood more for indoor Recreation.

Gloria de. if you do not use the Chrome browser, you are okay to go with Vista until April 2017 when Microsoft will no longer support it with any updates or customer assistance.

Thanks Patricia, for all that info. so fast. Now I should live so long! I will start to worry then. :)

Hi Sandy.

angelface--Thanks for the computer info and for the links to the cams.

JeanneP--You had a few days of bad luck.  Hope your vehicle is ship-shape now.

Well, seems my good doctor has found something new to play with.  Another growth or nodule on my spine.  So now I am scheduled for another MRI.  Just call me a glow worm or radiation hazard.  How many does this make in the last few months, I cant remember.  But first I have to have a blood test, so guess the MRI will be "with contrast".

My daughter made it to Katy okay. a town just East of Houston where she was to hook up with her daughter, have lunch and head back to my house.  Should be back here by five, hopefully.  Will be nice to see April, haven't seen her in a few years.

I need to go down and get a haircut in the AM.  Will be looking for a new barber since mine retired and the whole shop closed.  And where the owner moved to is not what I consider easy on/off access.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Mary Ann

Hal, when it rains, it pours, it seems.  I'm sorry your doctor found something else to work on with you.

JeanneP, that certainly was a bad day (or three days) for you.

Sandy, I really don't want a Mac after all of these years.  If I were younger, I would consider one, but not now.

Gloria D, I had a Vista computer (Acer) and we did not get along.  That was when I got my first-in-a-long-time HP.  I had always had good luck with HP and I feel my trouble now is because I downloaded Win10 onto my Win7 computer.  JeanneP once suggested that if you bought a computer with only Win10 on it, you would have better luck and no problems.  I'm tend to agree with her.

CallieOK

Good Afternoon,

The Windows 10 icon disappeared from my Toolbar after the July 29 deadline for free installation - and I'm not going to hunt for it. :)

E-mail exchange with Landscape Designer son this morning:

Me:  what kind of critter is living under my rock?   (picture of dirt mound with arched hole in the side)

Reply:  It's probably a cicada killer - a big giant hornet like thing.

Me:  (Neighbor) has one, too.  I can't wait to tell her we have big giant hornet-like things!!

Reply:  Ha Ha.  Google cicada killer.

So I did and discovered it's a big wasp that lives underground, kills cicadas and drags them back to the den to eat them.    Apparently, the safest time to get rid of them is "after dark".
So I invited Son to come over after dark and use my wasp spray that shoots a stream 50 feet.
No reply.   ;D

Crepe myrtles are prevalent in Oklahoma, too - and are one of the few fully flowering plants in the summer heat. We have red, pink and white ones.
I wish I'd asked Son to put dwarf crepe myrtle in my new flower beds instead of roses.  Not much blooming right now.

Hal,  I'm so sorry you have another health issue to take care of.  I'll look for a glow in the southern skies!

JeanneP,  glad you were able to get back home.  Sometimes, kids will adjust when they understand the situation.  Hope that's true with your bunch.

As long as I'm home by noon, the heat isn't bothering me too much.  I just wish it would cool off at dusk so it would be nicer to enjoy the long summer evenings.  I can already tell the angle of the sun has moved because of the way it shines in the patio doors in the mornings.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere a lovely day.

Sandy

I have a Dell Computer with a
Windows 10 operating system...

I have  had no problems with Win10....
I understand not wanting to change operating
systems...

Although I have used both Mac and Windows,
and I find both very easy to use with
a wee bit of a learning curve when I went from
one to another ... (not very much of a learning
curve)...

I think that it is harder to go from
a Mac system to a Windows system.
Both require some understanding.

I hope that you get a computer that you
can feel safe with,  so that you will not be
so frustrated...

Have a great day!
Sandy

halkel--I am really sorry that you have a growth/nodule on your spine.  I'll say some extra prayers for you.  Glad your daughter made it to Katy OK and will be bringing April to visit.  That should be enjoyable.

Mary Ann--Like you, at this stage I don't want a Mac.

Callie--Cicada killers are something I don't want.

Sandy--I've never, ever used a Mac.  Like I said above, at my age, I don't want to have to learn the logistics of one.

Back from the doctors with good and bad news. One nice item is that Medicare is going to be good to me so far. The bad news is he told me I was anemic, and I said to him, that was old news as I have had low blood pressure and pernicious anemia since childhood. He countered with taking a prescription iron pill. I said I have been allergic to Ferris Sulfate, (iron); also since childhood.  We decided to leave it at that.

He congratulated me on being otherwise in good shape healthwise, and I said my food allergies tend to make me that way. By this time it seemed to me rather like a tennis match.  ;)

The upshot is that my balance is troubling, and I will have more tests. The doctor also gave me some paperwork to fill out regarding a type of Lifeline that is connected to my cell phone.

Here's your rainclouds!

https://fairbanksalaska.com/goldenheart/

For those with W10, Microsoft is beginning today and into the next two weeks with the biggest update yet and for the whole system. Since I have everything on an external or with my off system server, Dropbox app, I only needed to double check that anything still on my system had an identical copy in my external, so I'm set. PC Pitstop said Microsoft possibly would eliminate some features not considered viable with W10 such as PSP programs. So I double-checked that they were in my external drive.

Not a good day for you but hope today you travel better.
I started day with a fall and now I cannot get myself up so...had to wait for ambulance to come .forunately Jen was home and made me comfortablecwithnpillows well here I am.
Getting to stage of wondering what comes next???
Keep as well as possible everyone.

June Drabek

Bis, I too used to be 5'7", but I'm about 5"6" now. I covered all the activities today and it has left me feeling like I has run over by a Mac truck .

The community meeting was a snap, so I came home and took a short rest, then down for lunch, then took home half of my lunch for tonights supper. Then home for another quick rest. On to the second floor lobby for the writers meeting…one hour there then to a quick trip downstairs and on to the exercise class. That is pleasant and always relaxing. Came home put on some loose clothing and laid down and read for a bit, now here. I'll go down this evening and check my mail box. Had a nice phone chat with Gary and now thinking about supper at home and an early bedtime.

So that was a synopsis of my Tuesday. I hope all of you had a memorable day too. I love my life here at Rowntree, I just wish I felt young and strong enough to be more active. So many volunteer posts that need to be filled, and I would love to help, but I just do not have the necessary stamina anymore to carry more of a load. Alas.

Sandy, wise advice you gave Mary Ann. I have had Apple computers since 1997 and just love them. I am on my fourth one now, it is an iMac and is nine years old now, and still doing me proud. Both my sons and DIL's are Mac users too and the girl that works here for Rowntree know my Mac well and is such a big help when needed. My only problem I had was keeping uTube connected, but so far, so good..she had is taken care of.

Hal, I am so sorry you have to have more testing done. I do hope you have good medical insurance because you would be drained dry otherwise with all these tests they keep putting you through. Is the nodule causing you pain, or is it a danger to your health ? If not I would tell my Dr. to go take a rest…..I will live with the nodule. I don't mean to mislead you Hal…you are wise enough to know what you need, but it seems like your body needs some peace and quiet for a while.

Junee, my dear one. I am so very sorry you had a fall. I pray you did not break anything. I fell a few weeks ago, but ended up with just bruises on hip, but they seem to heal themselves. I'm glad you didn't require hospitalization. It seems like when paramedics take you to the hospital, you spend a full day waiting to find a doctor to treat you. I am avoiding them now.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

Mary Ann

Junee, I am so sorry to hear you fell.  Don't you have a walker and/or were you using it?  I've been fortunate so far, but there's always a first time.  I'm glad Jen was there to comfort you.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

June, at my age, I do not want to change computer systems.  It may be simple to you, but I have enough learning in my head now and I don't need more.  Joan said the same thing.  You like your Mac, but would you want to change to a PC and learn the ins and outs at your/our age?  Think about it!

Mary Ann
