June Drabek

Another day of rest. I did dress and go down to the library, got some bread, boxes of cereals, a banana, an apple, a jar of milk,  and two more books. So I am set for whatever comes. I'm hoping to get downstairs at ten a.m. tomorrow for our Community Residents meeting. And get my ballot filled out, and whatever else the day offers. It's up to the body, of course.

I like pickled beets too. My folks just used to serve them cooked, buttered, and seasoned, but even back they I sprinkled vinegar on mine. Pumpkin pie is not my favorite, but my Dori makes one that is delectable.  I have never cared for mince pie.

Gary called me from San Diego today. He and Dori are taking a couple days off..and they deserve it. He agreed with me that a change in medications may be what wiped me out for two days.

I have to place a grocery order soon. I had a frozen Healthy Choice fish dinner that was very good, will order another of those and perhaps some Marie Calendars pot pies.

That's it from my house to your house for today. I'll have a light supper and so to bed. Keep well my dear ones, I love you all so very much. June

Jane, do you put sliced onions in your pickled beets.   I like the onions almost as much as the beets.  I used to have  a good recipe for pickled onions.  The onions were sliced thin in rings.   My husband worked for Heinz, and I think this recipe was in a little pamphlet that had come in with some mail from Heinz.   Can't remember how they were fixed and I haven't seen the little pamphlet for a long time.  I will have to go looking for it.  I think it was a pamphlet for all different kinds of pickles made with Heinz vinegar.

I am sure yours are very good.

What you call " Beets." we call Beetroot over here....we would eat cooked ( boiled ) beetroot, then sliced, in our salads......or some would roast beetroot in the oven, although personally, I have never tried that......Beetroot is good for you but, yes, you do have to remember it will temporarily change the colour of your urine, so remember, dont panic....

Diet Additive

During one of our weekly weight-loss classes, the group leader was extolling the merits of the program's prepared-food products.

She raved about the rich, delicious flavor of the imitation chocolate fudge and the nondairy pops, assuring us that we could eat them without the least fear of ruining our diets.

The woman next to me nodded her head emphatically and then whispered, "They're even better when you spread peanut butter on them!"

Food For Thought

DO I KNOW WHAT I REALLY WANT
(By Debbie Preuss)

This fresh question now does daunt
Do I know what I really want
Money, power, love or fame
So many things that I could name
But these treasures will not last
When my mortal life has passed
There is One to whom I cling
Jesus Christ the King of Kings
He is all I want or need
This should be my daily creed
The longing in my soul He fills
He's there through the rockiest of hills
When I'm low He lifts me up
Then invites me to with Him sup
He is my Savior, Lord and King
My all in all my everything
Yes I fail Him this I know
For forgiveness to Him I go
He is there waiting for me
So He can loose the chains and set me free
So I know what I really want
This question does no longer daunt
There is one to whom I cling
Jesus Christ the King of Kings

Good Morning Everyfriend...especially you, Joanie and Lloyd.  I was up when you were writing but I was outside with the doggies.

There's no school this Thursday and Friday and since Thursday is one of my regular days with Kiran, I was going to lose out.  Instead, I'll be picking her up after my appointment at the bank at 9 and we'll be spending the day together.  I haven't done this for a while.  I think we'll also pick up her friend in the afternoon and they can spend some time together.  They haven't really had any time since Kiran moved to another building for 4th grade.  Gemma is a class behind her.

JOY, my pickled beets do have sliced onions in them.  I couldn't find my mother's recipe when I wanted to make them years ago but I found that the recipe in the Ball Blue Book is very similar to hers.  The thin that convinced me was that it called for stick cinnamon and that was also in hers.  They are very good!

It's almost time to go feed the doggies and get myself some breakfast.  I hope you all have a lovely day doing whatever strikes your fancy.

Good morning everyone, another frosty morning here with 30°. Well I mote week to fined out who will win the drawn out election slander. I still do not understand the early voting and why they have it is many states now. Mail in ballots are great.

JOY  I had the chicken pot pie. I use very little salt so could be why I found the one I had salty.

JANE  I made cherry pies with the cans of cherry oie filling. That was what older son wanted instead of a birthday cake. Sorry to read Lew is now with our Father. May he RIP.

MARY ANN  I have tried the Pillsbury piecrust and even the ones that are premade in the aluminum pie plates but do not one came anywhere near home made.

JOAN  last night ai had 4 of the coconut shrimp, yummy. They filled me and there are a lot more in the bag. The chutney with them was pretty good, too. Like you I do not like pumpkin pie but do like squash pie. I think it is the different spices used. I like most pies and when I could I rather make pies than a cake.

JANE  I love pickled beets, only one in my family who does.

JUNE  hope you adjust to the new meds soon.

CALLIE  sure glad I can eat tomatoes, would have a nice fresh one every day if they were available.

JOAN  a cheese Danish will taste good this morning. Food for Thought I another good one. Will copy that one. Thank you for all today's goodies.

LLOYD   I agree with you, 2 pair of glasses is a pain.

JANE  enjoy Thursday with Kiran.

Good morning, Joan and all the Tuesday morning friends.,   Joan, the Danish pastries will be a nice treat this morning.

JaneS.  I just posted a recipe I found on the Blue Ball canning jar site, over in the "What's For Dinner" message board.  When you have a little bit of time,  can you check it out and see if it is similar to the one you have.  I am particularly interested because it reads that you don't have to process the beets.   I wrote a little bit about my canning experience years ago.  So, I think I might try this recipe.

Hi everyone on an overcast first day of November.  My agenda is fairly light today with the main activity being an appointment with my Cardiologist at 12:15 this afternoon.  It is a followup appointment from seeing her two months ago.  I have already fixed Pat's breakfast as she wasn't moving very well this morning and have emptied the dishwasher and cleaned up the kitchen.

Yesterday was a very busy day.  I contacted Comcast as I had decided the modem/router I was using was failing and will could be the source of many of the problems.  The tech at Comcast agreed with me so I took the device back to Comcast, which isn't very far from where I live and replaced it.  I then went on to my meeting stopping at the Target store for a tube of Crescent rolls that Pat wanted for a recipe.     I came home and rested for awhile and then got up and helped Pat get our roast beef in the oven for our dinner.  It was soon time to go to the Chiropractor and when I got home I spent an hour with Comcast to get my new device activated.  Scott was off work yesterday as it would have been his 24th wedding anniversary and he came out and had dinner with us and stayed a couple more hours.  He was very down yesterday.

Our new neighbors moved in yesterday as the big moving van arrived and was here most of the day.  Seeing all of those boxes going into the house brought back some memories of us a couple of years ago and I have to say I am glad it is them and not me.

Joan, at least when you serve the pie and another asks you can say yes this is Joan's pie and maybe they will assume that you made it.  :)  We have found that COSTCO has delicious pies but they are really too big for two people or will seldom buy one.

Gloria, you sound like me with the food tasting salty since I seldom salt anything.  Do you like the graham cracker pre-made pie crusts?

Joy, as you do my wife always adds spices to pumpkin or other fruit pies.  We have found that the Aldi's apple, cherry and blueberry pie mixes make a very quick and easy pie and no other spices are needed. I have never heard of pickled onions.

JaneS, times of death within a family circle are always difficult even when we know it is coming and the person is ready to go.

Good morning everyone..

Took hubby to the Dr for his flu shot this morning...our Dr. has a walk in from 7 am to 8:30 am..great for getting things done first in the day.
Damp cloudy day here, have the fire going and will get a few things done before I go sew.

Gloria ,you made my mouth water with the coconut shrimp...love those too.

Joan, thank you for breakfast.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Good morning, Larry.  You sure were busy yesterday.  I hope the new modem/router makes a difference in how your equipment works.  I'm sure you understand how those special dates make one feel "down".  It was nice Scott could spend part of the day with you and Pat.  Yep--you come to my house, and you get one of "Joan's Pies".:)

Amy--Good morning.  That's a nice service your doctor has for getting a flu shot.

Gloria, if I want to make a pie, since I don't make them from scratch any more (and didn't do a great job when I did), it is either the Pillsbury or store brand or no pie.  I can't say that I've ever noticed the taste of the crust anyway.  I do not buy the crusts in the aluminum pans they're not deep enough - I need an honest to gosh 9-inch pie dish.  I did not cook regularly for a family as you did, but I did do all of the desserts even before my mother died.  I got to be quite a good cake baker and I had a folder that had many cake recipes in it - a great variety.  I even made 7-minute frosting which others seemed to avoid.  I'll tell you - "them days are gone forever!"

Joan, I must vote this week and I plan to have Tom take me to the Township building so I can leave my ballot there.  We have some local issues on the ballot too, besides the Presidential and Congressional issues.  I still do not know which Presidential candidate to vote for as I don't like either one.  Things may have changed, but it was my understanding at one time that the pumpkin in cans was really squash.  I know it is a lot darker than what I ended up with when I made pumpkin pie from scratch.  The Libby's pumpkin I buy does not have any seasoning in it, I have to provide that.  They have a recipe on the label that I follow and it is good.

Good morning, Mary Ann.  I like to eat just plain pie crust.  When my fraternal grandma made pies (she'd make 8-10 at a time) she made a couple extra crusts for me.  Oh my--7 minute frosting.  I haven't made that in years.  Hmmm--the pumpkin in cans is squash?  There sure are lots of whitecaps.

Good Morning all, I am running late this morning. Woke us at 3:30 this morning and body did not want to go back to sleep, so got up at four and filled my medicaton boxes, and did a few minor chores. Back to bed, to doze a bit, then up at six to start the day.

Now I am due downstairs for a Community meeting. We will be voting on new Community Executive Officers. Then I am free till 2:45 for exercise class. I missed last time, so have to get back in shape. Still a bit weary, but that may be a normal condition now.

Time to make the bed and ready the body for clothing. see you later, June

Good afternoon, cool and cloudy day. A little wind, but nothing like we have had for the last week.

I was suprised I had only one child come to the door,  I had made up 20 bags of candy. Generally we have children by the carload, as parents field safe bring them into a senior park.  I just read that the Key Club at the high school turned the halls into Halloween spooks with cob webs. They had candy, games etc. Parents and children all had a good time and they were off the streets. I like reading about the good things high school students do for others.

Joan, I also like cheese Danish,  Thanks

June, hope you get to feeling better.

Yesterday, I went for my new hearing aid, it will be over $3000. if I get ins. for three years.

Gloria it got down to 35 here.  the man next door said he had ice in something on his porch.

Prays to all in need.

Amy sounds like you have a nice doctor. My primary doc. I have had for 20 years. Next week I have 3 doctor's appointments Hemotalagist, breathing doc. and dentist.

I am not going to my Lassie meeting to morrw (women's club, in park) as I will not be able to hear anything being said.

Linedancer--Apparently the "trick or treaters" you usually had went to the event that the Key Club had at the high school.  Kudos to those students for providing a safe place.  Wow--a hearing aid sure is costly.

Linedancer, I'm so sorry you had to go ahead and replace your hearing aid.  I found out that if I'd had to replace mine it wouldn't be covered by my homeowners insurance. And since I really need them for both ears you can imagine what they would cost   If I wanted them covered I'd need to add a rider to the policy.

Back again, I went to the Residemts meeting. It was interesting, but glad to be home. I feel like I'm getting a head cold, so I will see what the rest of the day brings. I will have some lunch at home, and hopefully manage to get a monthly grocery order posted. I made myself a cup of hot tea, with brandy and honey added. It is a family type thing for many ailments, and it is a great recipe. If it doesn't really heal, it still makes you feel good. I was thinking chicken noodle soup for lunch, but since the cup of tea, I may switch to Hormel's chili with beans.

Good afternoon everyone!

As you can see I am running late today.  Been a kinda busy morning.  My daughter had to go up to Best Buy and get a power cord for her laptop, expensive things, almost 80 bucks. And then I had to check on an appointment for my injection.  I was looking and said that doesn't sound right, so I called and the young lady who answered confirmed my suspicion the guy who booked me got the date wrong.  The only do injections on certain days.  At any rate it was corrected and now all I have to do is get out tomorrow and pick up the med.

Weather here is hot.  Cool mornings and hot afternoons.  Storms predicted for later tonight.  We can use the rain.

Amy, my primary care doctor is young and eager and hasn't learned that old folks have more ailments than the law allows and the more you dig to more you find.  No way he is going to make me feel like a young man anymore, just, hopefully stop the aches and pains.  But in our part of the world it seems that there is a doctor for every part of the body.  I yearn for the old days, you get a good doctor and he takes care of you.  Not some specialist who has a waiting room full and not a lot of time for the patient.

Hope everyone has a great day.

JoanFL

Jeanne Lee--And aren't you a happy camper that you found your hearing aid?

June--I once had a boss who, at the sound of any of us sniffling, he dragged out the tea, the liquor and the honey.  I didn't like the taste, but I guess it helped.

halkel--Good thing you discovered you had your appointment wrong before it was time to go there.

Well, I came home from work and sat down here to read and could not keep my eyes open.  So I took my blanky, my doggies and my weary body to the bed room and stretched out...for almost 2 hours.  I guess I was more tired than I thought!

I have a meeting at church tonight and a friend is picking me up so I don't have to drive in the dark.  I'm grateful for friends who will do this for me.  I'm sure they don't realize what a great service they do for someone like me.  And I think they are happy to be of help.  I did my share when I was younger and I never thought of it as a burden.  I also didn't know how big a difference it made in someone's life.  I guess it's like the kids say nowadays "you gotta be there".

Guess I better get the doggies fed and get myself ready to be picked up.

JOY, I answered your question about the pickled beets over in the cooking forum.
