I have had my bandage changed, I am to come back for a b.p. check about supper time, had b.p. taken, temp, and weight. I have gained 1 lb. I guess the ensure is doing its job.

Had lunch at home today, as my leftovers need to be used, plus some of the stuff I ordered at Von's. I will be going down for choir  practice at 1:30..getting ready for our Christmas sing. Randy is such a good teacher. Patient, fun, and always a prayer before we start. At 2:30 we will go to our Mobile and Balance class, then it will be home and reading and rest and computer for the rest of the day. I will have yesterdays fried chicken left-overs, and some Von's potato salad for my supper. What a glorious life I am having. Thank you God.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Had bible study and breakfast at church this morning.  I stopped off and got a dozen doughnuts and took in.  It was one of those mornings.  I just could not get started it seemed.  Came home and sit/lay down for awhile.  And about 3 got up from the couch and ask wife if she would like to go to the DQ for some icecream. She did.  And we both had a blizzard.  She is now laying down and I am on here reporting in and getting caught up.

Anyhow, I hear the couch calling me........

JoanFL

June--Glad they are changing your bandage and monitoring your BP.  Good that Ensure is helping to put on the pounds.  Your activities today should keep you busy.

halkel--One of those days with not too much "get up and go", huh?  Was that DK Blizzard your supper?

Back from the exercise and choir class. Choir is certainly going to require some work . Good thing we have nearly four months to beat ourselves into shape. Exercise just finished and I am ready to test out the bed and book. I could be home for the day but I have that date for a b.p. check  in a couple of hours, so I will stay dressed in my "walking" clothes.

Hal, now just what is a Blizzard that D.Q. makes ? I have never been to a Dairy Queen so I am behind the times. You will have to educate me.

Recliner is calling my name, so I shall grab a book and recline. See you all later.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

JaneS

I hope there are no blizzards around here very soon and if there are, I hope they all come from Dairy Queen.

I have 5 lovely pints of salsa ready to give for Christmas.  That makes a total of 12.  I think that's enough so that everyone can get one.

My nice neighbor across the street asked me if the young fellow who is supposed to trim my bushes charges me for his work.  When I said "yes", she said "Well don't pay him.  Steve and I will do it for you on Saturday."  And she wouldn't take "No thank you" for an answer.  She insisted that they would be over on Saturday and do it.  How did I get so lucky?

Dogs have been fed but I haven't.  I'm not really hungry.  I've been picking all day while I worked in the kitchen.  I added up everything I ate and I really shouldn't eat anything else.  Maybe I'll just cut up a tomato and put some salad dressing on it later.  The local tomatoes are sooooo good this year!

June, if you read this I want to pass on something about walking.  An maybe others will listen also.  When my BIL came out of the hospital following surgery, he was walking with the help of a walker and he began to shuffle and slide his feet.  My niece noticed it and said, "Dad, if you keep shuffling like that, you might start doing it all the time.  You should consciously think, HEEL AND TOE, HEEL AND TOE."  And I remembered this advice when I had my foot surgery and it kept me from shuffling.  Maybe you need to "heel and toe" when you walk and then things like doorsteps won't grab your feet.  Anyone think this is good advice?  It worked for me!

Guess I'll go turn on the TV and see what looks good....through my eyelids, I bet.  I'm kinda tired.

June Drabek

Janie, I'll bet that nice neighbor from across the street is going to be a recipient of that Christmas Salsa. Do you still make all the candies, you did before, or did you erase that from your list "to do" ? i will try the heel and toe, that would give me the necessary foot action. I will continue to do a slight march too, that makes me lift my foot up and over any obstacle. The more exercise of feet is always welcome. Another essential when using a walker is to stand straight, so many lean too far forward and that only gets more pronounced in time. We Seniors can't afford to retire….we have to stay conscious of many things.

I went down and had my B.P. checked. 157 over 65, pulse 62. Pretty much normal for me. I no sooner got home than the little knock came on my door. It was another nurse with a b.p. machine, here to take my pressure. I told her I just got home from having it done, that I was told this morning to come down for it, she looked surprised and said O.K., and I told her it was O.K. if she wanted to do it again. She smiled and said "No, you are so sweet". They sure keep trying hard to be good to us. And so very kind.

Now I am "in" for the rest of the day, I may take a short walk outside after it turns dark, that always is a pleasant time to breathe the night air, and makes bed even more welcome. time now to prepare my left over fried chicken breast, potato salad, chopped fresh fruit, and whatever else appeals to me. Life is good, and keeps getting better.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

You are the most interesting people! I love coming here and reading about your daily lives....even the trials and tribulations you go through. Sorry I am not better about posting!

I am making a mental note of the advice from Jane and June about walking/shuffling. Right now neither my husband nor I have any of those problems but I know it could be in our future. He's 82 and I'm 78. When he had his back surgery he had to use a walker, so I can see how shuffling and leaning over could be a problem.

I do have a couple of experiences to share regarding walking while wearing glasses with bifocals (and not concentrating  ::) ) One time when we took our daughter to the airport, I went inside with her.  Hubby was circling the loop to come back to the disembarking area to pick me up. I stood at the curb watching for him and stepped down to get a better look. It was a high curb and I fell forward with force while trying to protect my camera (dumb!) and my face. A lot of embarrassment (I had a huge audience) to say nothing of the abrasions and bruises. The redcaps put me in a wheelchair and told me to stay put till he came!  :-[ Last  winter I did a similar thing on the stairs at my daughter's house.  Coming down the stairs I thought I was on the last step and lunged forward in the same way. (Would you believe I also had my camera in front of me?)  Moral of the story is that bifocals interfere with depth perception.

Lloyd - That is very good news about not needing the oxygen and shots anymore.

Larry - Another thing you and Chape have in common, kidney disease. I hope Pat shows more improvement soon.

Gloria - Glad to see you are back "in action".

Chape is watching NFL's first game of the season. Sunday his favorite, the Giants, will have their first game. I'm sure Jenny is watching tonight! Denver Broncos are playing.

JaneS

Beverly, when I got my first bifocals (I was much younger...only 48) I almost fell down a flight of stairs because I just plain didn't see the edge.  I'm much more careful as I get older and at 81 and living alone, I'd prefer not to break anything on my body.  I've discovered that feeling with my foot is practical and I've not even come close to falling at stairs.

Now, I'm off to Dreamland.  May you all have a peaceful night's rest and wake to a hopeful new day.  May God bless us, every one!

June, a Blizzard is like a super thick malt, as you know DQ uses soft ice cream, well they fill a cup almost completely up with the ice cream and put in what you want in the Blizzard, in my case I had cherries, wife had pumpkin.  And a splash of milk and put it under a blender and serve.  I had a medium and it filled me up.

Joanie, it more or less was my supper and my wife also.  I did go in and make myself a pimento cheese/with Jalapeno's on toast for a snack about 8.  I have meds I have to take with food.

I have to remember the heel/toe routine.  Seems I catch every throw run going.

Bed time.  Nite, nite, God Bless and Sweet dreams.

Beverly

Jane - Glad you did not fall down those stairs! Bifocals are a blessing but can also be a hazard.

Hal - No Blizzards but did have some delicious Edy's Caramel Delight ice cream!

Denver

Good evening EVERYFRIEND.

YES, you are so right, BEVERLY, I was indeed watching my Broncos.  Wanted to see how our new QB would do and happily he did wonderful.

We bought tickets this morning to attend the US Air Force Academy Football game this coming Saturday.  Our little Granddaughter Kate will be cheerleading with the Falcon Cheerleaders.  Well, one knows you have to have spirit, so we drove down to Colorado Springs to a Sam's Club and bought us both a shirt!  It was a beautiful day and our drive was so enjoyable....and successful!

JUNE, I sure did not like reading about your fall, but how impressive the way the folks responded tyour needs....and that they continued to watch over you.

AMY, hope all went well for DH today.

Good morning, JACKIE.  I hope your day goes well.

I am shot after this FULL day and then the game, so I must say goodnight...Sleep tight, and you know the rest.

JANE S.....re, your coment of.....

" June, if you read this I want to pass on something about walking. It worked for me!...."

It wont be any use for people like me with Multiple Sclerosis, or people who suffer with Parkinson's Disease....as I often shuffle and suffer foot drop, for me, heel, toe, is NOT an option...

( Foot drop )

Foot drop, or dropped foot, is a symptom of multiple sclerosis caused by weakness in the ankle or disruption in the nerve pathway between the legs and the brain. This disruption means it is difficult to lift the front of the foot to the correct angle during walking, so it hangs down and may catch or drag along the ground and can cause trips and falls.

Foot drop can be successfully managed with some lifestyle modifications and treatments. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) uses small electrical charges to stimulate the foot into a more natural position for walking, or an ankle support (orthotic) can be used to hold the foot in a rigid position.

( What is foot drop? )

Foot drop is where it is difficult to lift the front part of your foot and toes. If you are experiencing foot drop your foot may hang down, drag or catch on the ground when you are walking. This can make it more difficult to manage stairs, curbs and uneven surfaces, and make you more vulnerable to tripping and falling. To compensate you might alter the way you walk to make sure you clear any obstacles. Most commonly this is done by lifting your leg higher, as if you were always climbing stairs, but this way of walking requires more effort and uses more energy. Your legs may tire quickly and you might feel wobbly. In time, this can lead to further problems such as pain in the hips or lower back, a tightening of muscles and poor balance.

( What causes foot drop? )

In MS, foot drop is caused by weakness in the ankle or disruption in the nerve pathway to and from the brain, rather than in the nerves within the leg muscles. This results in poor coordination in the leg and ankle affecting the way you walk.

If the coordination between the nerve messages and leg and ankle muscles is out of sync, the foot cannot be lifted to the correct angle at the right point when taking a step, so that the toes drag or catch along the floor or you slap your foot down.

Other MS symptoms can make foot drop worse. Numbness or other altered sensations in your feet may make it difficult to feel the floor. Muscle weakness or spasms in the leg muscles can make it more difficult to control your leg and a dropped foot.

CHUCKLES

The Old Junker

His beloved old white convertible was in deplorable shape, but he refused to get rid of it. So when the old junker was stolen from his office parking lot, his family was delighted. Nonetheless, they called the police and filed an insurance claim.

Their relief was short-lived, within an hour an officer was on the phone. "We found the car less than a mile away," he said, trying to restrain himself. "It had a note on it that read, 'Thanks anyway, we'd rather walk.'"

Food For Thought

Playing God
(By Alan Smith)

We sometimes refer to someone's actions as "playing God." By that, we usually mean that they are standing in judgment over another person in a way that only God can, or that they are making a decision regarding who will live or who will die. Most of the time, we use that term in a negative way. I heard a story recently, though, told by Mee Spousler that sheds a whole new light on the term "playing God."

Mee tells how she was trying to put her three-year-old son to bed for a nap. When she was unsuccessful, she put him in her bed and laid down with him to encourage him to rest. She fell asleep, but he didn't. When she woke up, she saw him sitting on a chair at the end of the bed, and asked, "Luke, what are you doing?"

"I'm playing God," he replied.

"Playing God?" she asked.

"Yes," he said. "I'm watching over you while you sleep."

What a beautiful thought, because that is what God does. David wrote: "I cried to the Lord with my voice, and He heard me from His holy hill. I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me." (Psalm 3:4-5)

Wouldn't it be great if we could all, like that 3-year-old boy, learn to "play God" in ways that would impact this world for good?

We need to "play God" by looking at the hearts of people rather than the clothes they are wearing.

We need to "play God" by forgiving those who have offended us.

We need to "play God" by refusing to allow race or the color of a person's skin to create barriers.

We need to "play God" by being patient, kind, and loving to the the people we deal with throughout the day

We need to "play God" by showing compassion to those who are suffering or in need.

We need to "play God" by keeping our promises and living lives of honesty and integrity.

We need to "play God" by living in such a way that we reflect the nature of our Heavenly Father.

I hope and pray that people around you will see you "playing God" this day.

Have a great day!

Vanilla-Jackie It was very early when i was here before. It is 5;30 A M here now. it rained hard here about the time I wen't back to bed,the deck is still wet. I have been a workaholic all my life is hard to set and watch T V And such.
sometimes it is very hard to set in the house except when the weather is cold and nasty. In days  gone I rember working and repairing equipment when it was below 0 º , go into house (no shop then) and hold my hands quickly on and off the side of stove to warm up. not that tough now but still hared to set idle.have a great day and thanks for the concern.

JaneS

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It rained a soft gentle rain most of the night and will continue through most of the day today.  It's exactly the kind of rain we need.

Jackie, I guess my advice wasn't what you wanted to hear and I'm sorry that it won't work for you but so many seniors just don't think about picking up and putting down their feet when they ARE able to do it if they think about it.  I don't want to be one of those.  If something develops that I'm unable to follow my own advice, I will accept God's will as you must do in your situation.  I know you are doing the best you can and I applaud you for your efforts.

I'll be off to WM to greet my public soon.  I hope Everyfriend has a lovely day filled with the love of God and friends.  I

I agree with Beverly,  I love coming here and reading about all of my friends and what they are doing.

It has been a couple of rough days but doing better today.  On Wednesday the news from the cardiologist was not what I want to hear but it is what it is  and I'll deal with it.  Apparently I have joined the AFib club.  He started me on a blood thinner and since this was my first experience with that kind of med. I didn't really know what to expect.  After stopping at the drug store to pick up the first 1 month supply and nearly passing out from sticker shock, I came home.  Talked to my younger son in VA to fill him in and get all of their news and then began feeling pretty sick.  I didn't know if I was having a reaction or not.  Spent a pretty miserable, and a little scary night, with pain and no sleep.  I called the dr's. office early next morning to ask if I might be having a reaction and should I stop taking the med.  Of course, my call went to voice mail and I never heard back.  I finally decided that instead of a reaction I might have picked up a nasty stomach bug so continued with the meds. since once started, he emphasized, I must not stop!  Yesterday and last evening was pretty uncomfortable but finally was able to get some sleep.  I woke up feeling much better but still pretty weak and shaky so will be taking it easy today.

Some of you have much more serious health problems to deal with so I'm trying not to obsess about my own.  All in all, I am luckier than many of you.

We are in danger of running out of food so I will make a list for David to get a few things that we are running low on.  In a few days I think I'll feel like going to the grocery store again and re-stocking pantry and fridge.

I hope it will be a good day for all of you.  NO MORE FALLING, JUNE!  That's an order!  Also, I'm one who is guilty of leaning over the Rollator too much and shuffling my feet.  Straighten up and do right, Phyllis!  My prayers for all of you and your challenges and special prayers to Amy and her DH.

Good morning, Phyllis.  I really didn't want you to join our a-fib club.  I know we all react differently to meds and probably some of it depends on what other meds we have to take.  I am sorry you've felt so sick.  Rest and rely on David to get the groceries.

LLOYD HAMMOND....
.....be very careful you dont give yourself chilblains when warming your hands...something years ago my late father always instilled in me when I would come home and place my cold hands in front of our blaring coal fire, ahh, yes, I can still picture my late mother turning in the opposite direction and lifting up her skirt to warm her backside....No central heating in our home, we solely had to rely on lighting one coal fire to warm up the whole house....and boy, did my father make a blaring hot fire with wood logs or sticks, newspaper and coal, never used coke...

PHYLLIS....
...sorry to hear you had a reaction to your new prescription meds, ( or a stomach bug.)....I guess that is one thing that puts me off, the once you start taking it, you cant just stop, but have to slowly wean yourself off....

JANE S....
...thank you, yes I truly wish my illness was that simple to follow your advise, but sadly it is not...there are many like me, all in the same boat....

AMY....
...guess my words won't be much comfort but...that long road ahead, does and will get shorter...

....oh how true...." Sometimes you will never know the value of something until it becomes a memory..."

Lately I have been having many negative thoughts that everything that means anything or everything to me, is slowly being taken away, bit by bit....ie, my ability to walk and my dogs...to name just two...I think we have to think of what we have left....

Mary Ann

Phyllis, I also have A-fib.  My blood thinner is Eliquis, which I am told is the safest of the blood thinners and my dose - two a day - is the lowest dose prescribed.  I recently had two bouts of nose bleeds which I blame on the blood thinner, but apparently there is nothing I can do about it.  I also have been told that I must not discontinue taking the Eliquis.  I really am getting along OK but I think my doctor should have recognized signs earlier than he did.  I may have had it a few years before it was diagnosed.  Nothing I can do about it now.

So, welcome to the club!

Talking of things being taken away from me....One thing I still have left is my brain savvy and brain functioning, yes even MS hasn't affected my brain as yet but....this morning has left me wondering as, recently a couple of weeks ago, I truly believed my eyesight had gotten worse almost overnight, yes another MS trait but...I was ready to dispose of the old pair of reading glasses that had been ok for the computer, whereas my most recent pair weren't, but better for reading books etc....But recently I found my eyesight to be one big blur and I could not see anything written on my screen so I swapped those glasses for my recent ones and have been using them but...this morning I picked up from our coffee table my long distance and tv glasses to read some small writing on the tv screen and...low and behold I couldn't see it, it was all a blur, then....the penny dropped, I had a eureka moment... that somewhere along the line I had accidentally swapped the glasses over, placed them inside the wrong case...So now I have put back the pair that were on the kitchen top ready to be thrown out, and just in the nick of time.....they are now safely back on my eyes as I type...and I can see every word clearly....Oh and the others are now nicely back on the coffee table, and I can now see the tv screen words clearly....

Hi everyone on a beautiful sunny morning here in South Carolina.  It was hot here yesterday and will be again today.  Yesterday was busy as left the house about 9:40 and didn't get home until around 2 pm.  I rested for a couple of hours and then took Pat for the last chiropractic treatment this week.  She suggested we eat an early dinner out.  Needless to say I didn't raise any objection.  We went to Pizza Hut and had a good meal.  Pat was able to have a nice salad and then they had a pizza special where you got two medium size pizzas for $12.99.  We each got one and hers had a lot of meat on it, which she ate with the cheese and just left the crust.  We then had a quiet evening watching television.  Today's schedule has only the mid-morning doctor's appointment for Pat, which is about a 30 minute drive from where we live.  She did seem to be a bit better yesterday with both her back and eyes so am hopeful that each day will see a little improvement.

Gloria, how long will your grandson be in France?  My doctor's office is supposedly working on getting the Entresto approved for me but haven't heard anything yet.

Don, what an interesting experience and one most of us probably would never have the occasion to experience.

Joan, I agree with you that "The Fork" message would work with cremation since non of us leave this earth with our physical body.

JaneS, maybe your Bible reading was the first time some of the young folks had every heard the Bible read.  It sounds like you have really nice neighbors who want to help you out with your outside work.

June, you have a wonderful attitude toward learning new habits such as picking your feet up rather than sliding them.  I also used to walk very quickly but not anymore and my steps are much shorter.  Good idea to keep your whistle at hand when outside your buildings.  I hope we are several years away from needing to go to the type of facility in which you live but some days I think the time may be nearer rather than further away.  We will just continue to take things one day at a time.  I thought everyone had been to a Dairy Queen.  When Pat and I were dating we would often go to the Dairy Queen for an ice cream cone after classes as I waited for my Mother to get off work to go home.

Jackie, hope that MS attack will soon ease for you.

Hal, I love the DQ Blizzards.  They are a real treat.  I usually get the one with the toffee in it. It is interesting how they turn the cup totally upside down and the Blizzard stays in the cup.  We have removed all of the throw rugs in our house except those surrounding the stool in the bathrooms.  I do have a rug under my desk and office chair in my office but it has a nice beveled edge and have never caught my foot on it.

Hope all have a good day.  Time to hit the road.

Beverly, I understand the depth perception issue with glasses.  It seems I am always catching the edge of the cabinet with dishes and having other depth perception issues.  I passed on watching the NFL game last night but checked and Carolina lost.  That is the team I will now follow along with the Atlanta Falcons.  I agree with Jenny is probably very happy the Bronco's won.

phyllis

Mary Ann, I appreciate the welcome (even if membership wasn't something I was wanting) but I can rely on you to answer any questions that I might think of about things.  Eliquis is what the doctor prescribed for me, too, and at the same dosage.  I hope I don't develop any bleeding problems but if I do, then I'll deal with them.  The card. doctor warned me that I might and to be very careful about walking and not falling.  So now, I use the Rollator all the time...inside and outside the house.  I don't really blame my primary doctor because she always listened when I said I felt something just wasn't right with the way my heart was acting.  She listened to it carefully and even gave me two EKGs in the office but nothing showed.  Finally, it was at her suggestion that I wear a heart monitor "just to be sure" and that is where a problem showed even though it indicated SVT.  That was enough for her to send me to the cardiologist and he is the doctor that diagnosed AFib instead.  I'm just grateful to be receiving the attention to the problem and the meds to help control it.

LARRY HANNA
.... thank you, yes, so far so good and its now 3.30pm...not gone away but calmer than of the last few days - week...but not calm enough to go out and about with trusting my body and legs....A shame as I promised to take our Benji back to Lodmoor Country Park while he is still with us but, of course a lot also depends on my MS and its reactions....just that Benjis days are numbered and are slipping away, one by one....but if I cant do it, I cant do it.....I have made him that promise and God willing, I shall stick to it......just not today, not sure tomorrow, maybe the next day or the next day...I just have to see when I shall be up to it, as I want to enjoy it as much as he does.....Especially now our weather days are a lot cooler...

Larry, have you thought of doing pasta and tinned tuna, with some chopped tomato, I find that is very quick and also very filling, I will always add a small dollop of butter...I tend to use Fusilli, the thick corkscrew type....Would your Pat enjoy that?

Vanilla-Jackie--Good you got you glasses figured out.  I hope you'll soon feel well enough to take Benji to the park.

Mary Ann--I take Toprol twice a day.  I've taken it for four years with no problem.

Good morning, Larry. It's nice that you and Pat can get out for a meal occasionally.  Would you believe I have never had a DQ Blizzard?  Wonder if they have lactose free ones?

Phyllis--It sounds as if your doctors are now on top of things--and that's a GOOD thing.

Good morning everyone. I will be happy when this damp humid weather is gone. Enough said.

DON  looks like you said the right words before the meal. You are a smart man and knew what to say. A simple Grace to you did the right thing.

JOAN  heat comes with the apartments so is turned on and off in fall and spring. We have thermostats and can set them where we want, management “would appreciate it if we kept it at 68°”  When we had the blizzard was the only time I turned mine up to 75.

JUNE  my daughter sent me a whistle  for the same reason your friend gave you one. It was almost 30 years ago when we went to Tijuana. Living so close to the border all his life my son in law has only been there 2 times. I have been drinking Ensure for several years but I am still losing weight.

HAL have not seen a DQ around here in years. Used to love their blueberry sundaes.

JANE  hope there are no blizzards this coming winter. Home canned salsa will be a wonderful gift. You have wonderful neighbors. All doorways here have a metal strip and are hard for the rollators to get over. Have to pick the first wheels over them so have to pick feet up, too. Glad I have not got to the shuffle walk.

JUNE  holding the walker close helps keep the back straight. I know when I go out to walk I start good but by the time I get back I an leaning my right arm on the handle because my back is acting up.

BEVERLY  it is great having the PC back and being back again. I have worn bifocals for half my life and never had trouble with depth perception.

HAL  get rid of the throw rugs. They have been the cause of many bad falls.

LLOYD  see God wants you to take it easy a bit longer, that is why he sent the rain.

JOAN  that frittata will be a welcome change this morning. That old Clunker was so bad even the crooks didn't want it. Thank you for all today's goodies.

AMY  already in the 80's here. Will be another AC and fan day.

PHYLLIS  I get fed up with my doctor for never replying to a call from me. Wonder if it is him or the staff that never tell him I called.

JACKIE  we all have had things we could do taken away from us. Does no good to complain about it, we all have our problems.

LARRY he will be in France a week. With the world so unsettled these days I worry. My son is like me, a worrier too.

GLORIA...." JACKIE  we all have had things we could do taken away from us. Does no good to complain about it, we all have our problems...."
...... thank you for that harsh and cold remark, you have really helped, not a way I would talk to any friend on here, after five years I have more respect for them....yes guess this is not the place to show my depression....my MS forum is the place to be if I want perking up....they are very understanding...So much for five years of loyalty.... guess its ok if we all keep our problems to ourself...
