Hi Everyone.  I have had a nice rest after my busy morning and so now have the time to go back and read what was shared since I posted yesterday.

Marilyne, I enjoyed the basketball games I watched yesterday afternoon and then I watched the Super Bowl, which turned out to be rather boring.  I saw only a couple of the commercials that I liked, especially the Verizon ones that honored first responders.  I didn't listen to the half time show as I had never heard of any of the performers and what I saw with the sound on for a little bit is not my cup of tea.  I have heard that labs made great pets.

Mary Ann, I am feeling much better although am pretty tired this afternoon.  I probably expect too much to soon in terms of getting back to where I was before the dehydration hit.  As I read the eye color statistics I thought of Elizabeth Taylor.

Patricia, that was interesting about green eyes and the other rare character traits.  I sure wouldn't want red eye color.

Sandy, I didn't tune in until 6:30 and that was the coin toss so missed Gladys Knight.  I used to have a bookkeeper in my office in Atlanta that grew up with and knew Gladys.  She said she was a fine person. The Pat's will go down in football history as one of the finest teams and Tom Brady as one of the finest quarterbacks in pro foot ball history.

MarsGal, has Shan settled in to your household routine. Enjoy the warm weather.  We are enjoying ours while it lasts before another cold front comes through.

Joy, I will have to look up Gladys Knights rendition of the National Anthem.

Lindancer, I think it is terrible when social media tries to destroy a person for something they said or did when they were young and foolish.  Those of us that are older grew up under different social norms and probably now regret that but it was acceptable at the time.  We can change our minds as we mature.

JeanneP, I sure hope the ground hogs prediction is correct.  You are having a tough winter so far.  Sorry that you are not liking Windows 10 on your new computer.  I set Pat's computer up with desktop icons so she doesn't have to use the ones that Windows now has as they have gone to apps for most things.  I don't care for the Windows Explorer or the newer Edge Browsers and am now using the Firefox browser for everything except a few things that only seem to work on the Microsoft browser.  I hope you are not too close to the service station.

Larry, I feel the same way about chastising someone for something done 30  years ago and as you said, customs were different when we were younger.  I used to like the blackface minstrels, not for their blackface, but for their singing.  We accepted things like drinking fountains for blacks and white - because that was the custom.  I'd be horrified today to find something like that.  I think we've come a long way but I know we have a long way to go yet.  It bothers me with all of the hatred in the world and it seems to get worse, not just here but in other countries.  I've said many times that I'm glad my future is behind me.

We'll stay warm for a few days, then get colder next week.  I'm watching the Weather Channel where they are telling that February is the month for bad storms.  I asked the Internet about a blizzard here in 1977 and found I was right.  There was a worse one in 1978, both happened at the end of January and/or beginning of February.

I'm glad you are taking it easier so you can regain some strength.  We need you.'

Mary Ann

Joy

I did want to check back here  to let Larry know that I was so glad to see his nice long message,  So glad that you are feeling a lot better. Just don't rush it too much.

Larry and MaryAnn, I, too, agree with both of you about condemning s person for something was said or done so many years ago.  Times and people can certainly change.  During these kind of situations, I have never heard anyone mention
AL JOLSON.  He was labeled as one of the greatest entertainers of all times.  Plus, I am sure lots of people who speak out about this sort of thing have done things way back in their past that they are not proud of or something that they know now was not right.  People change and lots of things that are considered wrong today, were  just done way back when.  Ashamed, but still happened.  Off my soapbox !!!

Time to look for some dinner !

Have a good evening.

Joy
BIG BOX

Mary Ann

Joy, just wait another 30-40 years and lots of today's people will find that their thoughts are nothing like they are today and I hope lots of them regret their actions of today.  But we can't go back.  It's good that we don't know what the future will hold.  And I don't expect to be around in 30-40 years.  So there, too!!!  Ha!

Mary Ann

Vanilla-Jackie

I remember the great Al Jolson, a great entertainer, sadly he would be frowned upon today, in today's changed society of what we can or cant do or say...
" There is no present like the time "

Mary Ann

Jackie,  you're right.  Not only that, Jolson was Jewish and the Jews today have troubles here in the US, (maybe elsewhere, Bubble?) and it's not right.

For those of you who do not post in Soda Shoppe, find June Drabek's last post of yesterday to read what she had to say.  It is sad and uplifting all at the same time.

Hi Everyone. It is a beautiful sunny and pleasant temperature day.  I was late getting up this morning as didn't sleep well last night even though I got a lot of rest.  Our calendar is clear for today so think later today Pat and I will go to Walmart and get our last Shingles shot if they have the serum.  Pat also needs to pick up some prescriptions.  I hope to get an afternoon nap.

Mary Ann, I agree that I am glad to be older.  However, things are changing in our world so quickly and we have seen many changes.  Now they are talking about flying cars as well as robots to do most of the labor.  Social media has a good side and then it has a terrible side when it seems it  a few people can create storms of hatred.  I am just glad I don't have the responsibility to make political decisions other than for whom I will vote.

Joy, I am like probably most of us who want to see overnight like we were before we become ill. I am very concerned of having a relapse but will all I can to avoid it.  As Jackie says Al Jolson would certainly be politically incorrect in today's society as would quite a few other entertainers.

Jackie, isn't it interesting that others get to define what is acceptable and what is not in terms of what we say or do.

Mary Ann

Tom and I have just returned from a monthly ritual - my haircut, then breakfast at the restaurant next door.  They have coupons 2 for 1 and we usually get something off the big menu where we can use the coupon.  They also have a less expensive menu and the coupons do not apply to that.  I knew that you could not combine the menus but Tom did not so he found that out last month when he ordered from a different menu.  Today, I asked which menu he was going to use and I'd order from the same one - and we did.  The restaurant is a family-owned business and one of the sisters mentioned it to us today - what a memory!  Anyway, we had coordinated our plans before we got there, so all was well.  Tom had breakfast burritos and I had eggs, toast and a sausage patty.

Larry, I think I don't want to ride in a self-driving car let alone a flying car.  I think Tom would prefer the regular car but I think the next generation would try anything.  If they think getting a job is hard now, just wait until robots take over every kind of job.  As soon as jobs are invented, robots will be trained to do whatever the new job will do.  All progress is not good!

Mary Ann...
...as far as I remember back, June Drabek has always been and remained uplifting..she has a strong faith...I have always viewed her as one of life's tough cookies, who still has her marbles and is in full control of what she is doing...Our God is with her at all times...

Larry Hanna...
...yes robots are taking over ( very frightening thought ) but, we still need man to man them...

" There is no present like the time "

Mary Ann

Jackie, I feel the same way about June.  Sometimes she's too trusting in that she would refuse to see her medical team where she lives, but several of us would encourage her to seek help and eventually she would.

I know some of don't post in many folders and would miss June's post if we didn't tell them about it.  Everyone should know!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I read June's message in Soda Shoppe last night, and was so impressed with her uplifting attitude and resolve. I don't post in SS, but I have enjoyed reading her messages over the years.  She is a strong, positive woman, and an inspiration to us all. I'm hoping that she defies the odds, and lives to enjoy her next birthday.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I post very little in Soda Shoppe and I know others post only in one or two folders; I just thought everyone should read her message even if they don't respond.  She used to post here occasionally, but her illnesses overtook her.  Her birthday is Nov 30.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

We are having a nice warm and sunny day.  Today is the viewing for our daughter-in-law's Father in Silver Spring, Maryland. The funeral is tomorrow. Neither of us is up to making the trip to MD but I did send a nice spray of flowers.  Her father is 99 years old and was a POW in Germany for two years during World War II.  He didn't speak about those years until he joined a group of other war veterans a few years ago.  Some people don't believe in angels but one of his experiences was when an angel appeared and saved his life.  He was such an outstanding and decent person and we are praying for God's comfort for the family.

I don't usually read the Soda Shoppe posts, but I'll look for June's post.

angelface555

Good morning from a very warm Interior! We are back to having mixed snow and freezing rain again so I'm glad I was out yesterday and did what I needed.

Farrah has been very affectionate lately and occasionally playing with some forgotten toys. I know she is bored as I spend so much time on my lessons.

I saw June's post and certainly wish her the best. She has been such a long time member of S&F and before with SeniorNet.

I believe that each generation thinks that the time they became of age is the best and the next generation will believe their parents were all wrong. Change is inevitable, and life is cyclical as the saying goes. This country's present administration is certainly attempting to take us back to the way things were.

From Euronews, two more results of climate change;

The amount of plankton and algae in the oceans, changing colors and longterm effect on fisheries.

"The Earth's northern magnetic pole is on the move, scientists say, drifting from the Canadian Arctic towards Siberia. The change is happening so fast that it has forced researchers to make an unprecedented early update to a model that helps navigation by ships, planes, and submarines in the Arctic.

While the geographic north pole is fixed, the magnetic north pole — the north that your compass points toward - is not.

The update released on Monday says the magnetic north pole is moving about 34 miles (55 kilometers) a year. "It didn't move much between 1900 and 1980, but it's really accelerated in the past 40 years," said Ciaran Beggan, of the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh."

Mary Ann

Patricia, I read the piece about the magnetic North Pole moving and intended to send it to you, but I was online at 7:30 am and I knew you would not be online until later.  So I forgot about it until a while ago but in the meantime you had posted the story.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

I've been keeping half an eye on the magnetic field shift stories. It appears, from what I've read here and there, that we are overdue for a magnetic pole reversal. That will be something to see. At the least it will really mess with the bird brains that use the earth's magnetic fields to navigate when migrating. I haven't seen anyone that has a good idea of how it will affect the earth geologically except where the magnetic north and south switch will eventually show up in ferrous rock.

Shan is fitting in nicly, Larry. He has joined the musical lap "game", he and Oscar roust about a bit, and he doesn't feel the need to follow me around all the time, just most of the time now. The critters got a new angled scratch pad the other day. It is one that can be set into three different positions. One is an A-Frame. I have it set as a regular angled, but double-wide pad. Shan reminds me of a squirrel hanging upside-down on a tree when he uses it. He spreads the whole way across it with his head facing down toward the floor. He turns into "Zoomie Cat" for about five minutes when he gets some catnip. The other two just stare at him when he flies by. Funny thing, Shan likes the dried catnip and won't touch the fresh from the garden stuff. Oscar is the opposite; he loves the fresh catnip and doesn't bother with the dried catnip.

Wouldn't you know it. As soon as I opened some of the windows this afternoon to let in some fresh air, the sun went into hiding. It is 60o[/sup now. This morning I discovered I was taking a bath with a stink bug, and I scooped out a small flying insect from the cat's water dish. The bugs sure are quick to take advantage of a little warm-up.

Thanks for thinking of me, MaryAnn.

I saw a photo of Joan on the Random Image. I miss her posts.

Not only animals, MarsGal, are being affected by the change, birds, insects, and more substantial animals; but most navigational systems as well, planes, (Polar route for example); submarines, ships, cell phones, computers, GPS, etc. To me, it is fascinating how our world and our galaxy are changing.

Farrah is part of the eight to ten percent of cats who aren't affected by any catnip or its close cousin, the spider plant.  She does like green plants which are why mine are up eight feet and blocked on all four sides.

She razes her cat grass,(or wheatgrass, it's the actual grass type used); I just lightly water,  put it up and let it grow again before setting it down again. I miss seeing the odd catnip zoomies that some of my other cats had. She does sometimes get the odd zoomie for no discernible reason, but scientists familiar with cats say that is from a build-up of the cat's hunter/prey instinct.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I see a picture of Western Joan show up in the Random Image and it's good to have it remind us of her so we don't forget.  Another picture that comes up often is that of Jeanne Lee.

Kendrick doesn't go after my house plants but he does like the grass I have for him.  Which reminds me I should water it and my other plants.  In the summer when I have several amaryllis on the deck, he will get in between the plants as if he's stalking something.

This has been an odd day today.  I keep losing track of what day it is and I think it is because I could not find my keys this morning.  I'm a creature of habit and always take care of them the same way - except this time.  I didn't need the keys today because I was with Tom and he has the same set.  The last time I had used them was Sunday and not again so I knew they were in the house.  I looked under the bed and they were not there.  Later I put my purse where I keep it and I saw something fall behind the vanity - and there were the keys.  Evidently I had put the keys on top of my purse and didn't notice them when I picked up my purse this morning.  Anyway, the lost was found and I know now it is Tuesday.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
"The tragedy in the lives of most of us is that we go through life walking down a high-walled lane with people of our own kind, the same economic situation, the same national background and education and religious outlook. And beyond those walls, all humanity lies, unknown and unseen, and untouched by our restricted and impoverished lives." -Florence Luscomb, architect and suffragist (6 Feb 1887-1985)

...I remember my parents and family saying..." we sail through life through blinkered eyes..." or something similar on those words if anyone can correct me..
Think it was meaning, we dont want to see the truth, yet know it goes on....It is right in front of us..

While I am here, another Idiom has just sprung up...." Rose Tinted Glasses. " ie: take off your rose tinted glasses and see for yourself what is going on in the world...or right in front of you..

Hi Everyone. We are to have another 76 degree day here with only a small chance of rain late this afternoon.  Pat and were able to get our second and final Shingles shots yesterday afternoon.  They were very busy so we had to wait quite awhile but we wanted to get that over.  We then drove downtown and enjoyed a Chinese Buffet.  I have a friend who will be here to work with me and tonight is Wednesday night dinner at the Church and the opportunity to spend time with Scott.  It is the popular Taco night with the ice cream bar to follow.

Mary Ann, I love those 2 for 1 coupons at restaurants.  It certainly saves a bit of money.  We use a lot of coupons at Ruby Tuesday's.  Glad you could take advantage of one of them for your breakfast yesterday.  I am not sure about a self-driving car either but would sure like to have one with all the warning signals. Glad you found your keys.

Jackie and Marilyne,  June has been an inspiration to many of us throughout the years as have numerous other folks here.

Jean, sorry to learn of the passing of your DIL's father.  We are like you and your husband in probably not being able to travel anymore.  My SIL in Missouri is not in good shape and she is likely the only one we might try to make one more trip back there but it will depend on the situation at the time.  Pat and I would both have to go in wheelchairs.

Patricia, you are right in that each generation must do their own thing and change is inevitable.  Interesting information on the climate change. It is interesting how two different cats react to catnip.

MarsGal, I am sure you are a wonderful owner for Shan and he is one fortunate cat to be in your home.  Zoomie Cat brings some interesting thoughts to mind.

The lower part of Michigan has had sleet/freezing rain overnight and about 45000 homes are without power this morning.  Fortunately, we are not part of that group.  Looking outside, I don't feel that things are or were that bad, but when it happens to you, it is bad.  I worked during one ice storm where the ice was thick on trees and fences and what have you.  Driving looks rather normal - that is HERE, ice is elsewhere!

Larry, it looks as if you have your day well taken care of with nothing too strenuous.  I am not too fond of Chinese food, however, I think I could handle a buffet and take only as much as I'd like.  The ice cream bar sounds delicious.

We get booklets with coupons and this restaurant has one in each month.  There are other coupons - $2 off and $5 off but the 2 for 1 is best and all we have to do to qualify is each get a beverage and order off the same menu.  They have quite an assortment of things to get and they are known for their breakfasts.  Even though we're there only once a month, the women (sisters) recognize us and reminded us that we couldn't order from both menus.  We had already coordinated our ordering before we got there.

Patricia, your Thought for the Day reminds me of when my dad was teaching.  He taught Shop and boys from either of two parochial schools would come once a week to his shop.  I think these boys were in the 7th or 8th grades and had always gone to religious schools and Dad said some of them did not know how to act around the other boys in the classes.

This isn't true any more, but we had a new minister back in the '50s who found out when he came that our city was 40% Dutch and 40% Polish and 20% everything else.  We fell into the "everything else" category.  But as the years went by, we have had many nationalities flavor the pot.

My first month back to my somerset ( 31 miles away ) MS Social gathering this evening...I am more looking forwards to it as it was February last year I first became a regular monthly member...Not only a regular member but February last year, my very first meeting, I came up with the suggestion of an Idea of a speaker to come and be our guest, this suggestion got taken up and organised and she is coming this evening, the talk will be on her life, her family life on the fairground, before and after the war...She is an author, very  humerus on the stories, she tells it like is, or was...I have seen her twice when she visited my local MS centre, she is very entertaining so looking forwards to tonight, my Somerset group have yet to see her..
" There is no present like the time "

Mary Ann

Jackie, you will know what to expect with your speaker tonight and I think other members will be in for a treat.  It's a good idea to have an entertaining speaker at meetings, especially when so many have MS, a serious ailment.  You need the diversion.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Patricia - Interesting coincidence!  I had just finished copying and pasting the "Thought for the Day", from Wordsmith, into the folder I keep on my desk top!  I don't save them all, but occasionally, there is one that really speaks to me, and I want to keep it.  Today's thought was a keeper!

Larry - AJ got his first shingles shot this week.  I decided against getting one, because I had a case of shingles about 20 years ago, and I'm hoping that will be enough to protect me.  Also, I try to avoid getting vaccinations if possible.  I don't mind the shot itself, but I'm one of those who wonders if we really need all these ongoing immunizations at our age?

Mary Ann - We also had freezing rain the past couple of days, and it actually SNOWED here! :o  Last night, the local news was filled with stories and pictures of people all over the valley, playing in the snow.  That is a BIG deal here, as it only happens about ever ten years or more! It only snowed in the foothills and higher elevations, which is an easy drive from all the valley cities. It's a treat to look out either my front or back windows, and see snow on all the surrounding mountains.

Jackie - I also remember the Rose Colored Glasses saying, from long ago. My mother was one who always saw the good in everyone and everything, and had a very positive attitude.  I recall my Dad saying, "Take off your rose colored glasses", and look at what's really going on.  I know that she saw the dark side of things, but preferred and focused on the good. Unfortunately I didn't inherit that trait from her, but am more like my dad.
