The brown bears of Katami are back and the fishing is evidently quite good!

Oops! It wasn't Happy River carrying the wind blades, it was the Industrial Skipper I saw. And, as luck would have it, the Skipper is now on the Marine City webcam. She is running fast and empty at the moment, heading for Montreal. There is another ship just making the bend; the tug Albert is pushing Margaret, coming up river. Which reminds me. I was excited to see three ships in close order coming upriver and two going yesterday afternoon.  There is also the rare passenger ship, Grand Caribe coming up river and should be within Marine City site soon.

Weather will be warm and dry for the weekend. Gosh, I hate mowing when it gets hot.

Joy

Good morning.   A really slow start to this beautiful day here in Central Maryland.  Where is everybody.  Hopefully, you all got to sleep in a little bit.

I am up, but not quite "at em" yet.  Too early for anything to have happened.

Hope all the special friends will have a great weekend.  It is to be in the mid-80's with very low humidity.  I have nothing special  planned, except maybe go sit outside later.  This is the first weekend of Summer, and it looks to be just beautiful. Hope everyone will get to have a nice day, wherever you are.

Hi everyone I'm a soon to be pretty warm South Carolina. I'm just going to check in today as the morning has flown by and my family will soon be here and I want to spend a maximum time I can with them. It is been a marvelous day with just the four of us sitting in reminiscing and resting. Today there are a few projects and then we are going to go out to cheddars for a meal. I haven't been out to a restaurant in quite a while and this will be a real treat with my family there.

Larry Hanna...
...enjoy your time with your family and do enjoy your meal..

Mary Ann

Larry, it sounds like a fun day for you and all you have to do is be there!  Enjoy yourself and we'll catch up on your activities when you're ready.

Yesterday Tom and I went to the IHop for lunch.  It isn't really on the beaten path for us so we don't think about it, but when we went past it going to my retiree luncheon, we decided we'd go there soon.  We went late, left here about 1 pm, so the place was almost empty and we could chat and talk one on one and we don't have that opportunity often.  I think the occasion was the most fulfilling talk with Tom that we've had in a long time.

MarsGal, I missed the passenger ship in Marine City but I did see mention of it in the Chat.  Ordinarily I don't begin my computer day by looking at ships, but my computer has been starting where I left off the night before and evidently it was in Marine City.  I watched long enough for a ship to go by.  I don't know that I've seen the Industrial Skipper yet, but I've seen the icon and it would be too far away from when it would go through the site.

I've showered and shampooed this morning and I'll try to do something constructive - and the stuff is there but the initiative is not.

JACKIE - I like your new signature, at the end of your messages.
"In the arithmetic of love, one plus one equals everything and two minus one equals nothing."
Very sad, but true, when a partner or spouse is gone, and the other is left alone.
I hope that you're doing a bit better, and have been attending the meetings of the bereavement group?

MARY ANN - I wish we lived near an iHop, but the only one I know of is more than ten miles away, through heavy traffic.  The same with Olive Garden, only in the opposite direction.  Sounds like you had some nice, one on one time, with Tom.

I've been neglecting the webcams the past couple of days, so will try to visit them all over this weekend.  I would have enjoyed seeing the [Happy River, or the passenger ship, and hope that they come through again sometime one the Summer?

JEAN - I got a laugh out of your post, when you mentioned "the elevator boy"!  :) Those were the days, weren't they?  I remember waiting on the front porch or yard, so I wouldn't miss the paper-boy, who delivered our evening paper.  His name was Frank, and he was so cute! He would always stop and we would talk for awhile before he continued on with his route.  I was about 13, at the time.

CallieOK

Good Morning,

Yesterday, I caught ships going in opposite directions on the Marine City cam.  Checked the map and now think I've figured out how to tell whether one is headed toward the lake or the harbor..

Checking ship web cams and Times Square web cams have become part of my morning routine.  Yesterday, there was a big group of people doing yoga in Times Square.  I texted my granddaughter who lives in NYC and teasingly asked her if she was one of them. I knew she wasn't because, although she works in the general area, she avoids Times Square if at all possible.  She politely replied but I could see her rolling her eyes and thinking "Silly Gammy".  :smitten:

Jean,  the girl I mentioned and I were at several of these annual meetings with our parents.  We usually managed to explore wherever we were.  For instance, in New Orleans at the Monteleone  (sp?), parents had gone to have coffee/beignets and strictly told us not to open the door.  However, they didn't say anything about the window and our room was right above the porte-cochere over the entrance.  So we crawled out the window and sat on the roof watching the action along...I think...Bourbon Street.

Larry, so happy you're having family time and going out for a meal.  Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!!

Patricia,  my son went fishing in Alaska and has pictures of bears doing the same not too far from the boat he was on.  He did catch some salmon and had it shipped back in dry ice.  YUM!!!!

Joy,  wish I could join you sitting outside.  It's very humid and the wind is strong enough to bend the cottonwood trees along the creek behind me almost double.  Weather gurus are saying we're to have severe storms later today into tomorrow.  This is getting tiresome!

Off to find something useful to do....or not.

Enjoy your day, everyone.

FlaJean

Yes, Marilyne, those were good days and good memories.

A sunny but warm day here in the Niceville area.  Jeff is mowing the yard and will soon be finished.  The flowers are loving the rain we've had.

Mary Ann, that sounds like such a nice visit with Tom at the ihop.  We used to visit the ihop in Ocala but here the nearest one is in Fort Walton Beach or in Sandestin quite aways from us.  So don't think we will be going there anytime soon.

Larry, I hope you have a very nice visit with your sister and brother-in-law and your visit to the restaurant will be good food and good conversation.

Patricia, I watched the bear but he was just looking and didn't catch any fish while I was looking.  We have brown bears in Florida and we did see one in the Ocala National Forest when we lived in Ocala.  He gave us the once over and made his way into the trees.  We just sat in the car and watched him (or her?).

Have a good day everyone.

...the meetings of the bereavement group is an online "Sue Ryder" bereavement posting forum...I took the signature statement from one of our posters who had posted part of a bereavement quote which I copied..It just seems appropriate for how I am feeling... and how the other members were feeling..many members also lost their hubbies same month as I lost my Richard...Isn't it strange, when they are with us, all we focus on is their faults, yet when they are gone, we cry over their good qualities which were never appreciated when they were with us...Now its too late...

Our IHop isn't too convenient, however, we can go down a main road to get to it and it is probably two or three miles from here.  However, it is not on the main road we take to get to other restaurants so it is overlooked most of the time.

Our Internet was down and I got out a flash drive and took a trip to Alaska and Vancouver Island BC and that was very enjoyable.  The trip was in 2006 and I was surprised I remembered as many names as I did and circumstances for taking the picture.  We were on a tour for the Alaska part but Jim's sister lived near Victoria in BC and we were on our own for that part.  I think that was my first trip to Victoria but I know of two more times we went there.  The last time was a family gathering and it is good we did that in 2012 because Jim died the next year and his sister's husband died two or three years after that.

My neighbor is rearranging my garden under the kitchen window.  She had put a few flat stones under the window with the expectation that I would sit there - but I sit on the deck instead.  She is taking out some of the stones and putting hosta in there.  My hosta have grown and increased.  I really am not that fond of them, but they do look nice all year long.  I am trying to have her put myrtle in where there are flowers as Tom won't do any gardening when I'm gone.  I want it to be relatively care-free.

It is a lovely day and I can see 78 degrees on my thermometer.  I haven't turned on the air yet.  I agreed to a program where the power company can stop our air at certain times from June through September.  I have to do it for a year and if I am not happy with the program, I can discontinue it after the year is up.

I've been watching ships, that is, until the Internet quit.  After I finish S&F, I'll go back to see what they're doing.

Last week I gave my neighbor (the gardener) some cat grass seed and she has yet to plant it.  Her cat has been eating lawn grass which has been fertilized and the cat would get sick.  I tried to let the cat eat some of Kendrick's grass but her cat would have nothing to do with it, probably because I was out there.

I wonder what is happening in the golf world.  I just turned it on and it's Championship golf but I don't know where.  At least I should be able to recognize the names.

I was just reading today's paper, and saw a couple of houses for sale here in town, that are not far from where I live.  These two would be on the South side of the downtown area, and our house is on the West side of downtown.

This one is priced at over SEVEN Million! :yikes: They will get their asking price eventually, because there are thousands of multi-millionaires living here in Silicon Valley, who work for Google, Facebook, Apple, and all the other Tech companies. As soon as something like this comes on the market, it usually sells quickly, because there is a housing shortage. However,
I see that this one has been listed for over a month.  Maybe they will have to knock a million off the price? Oh how sad! ha ha
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/109-Sund-Ave-Los-Gatos-CA-95030/19749718_zpid/

This smaller one is a available for only a little over FOUR million. After scrolling through the different rooms, I think this one is much more livable.  I can't figure out why it has two complete kitchens? It will sell faster than the other one, because it's cheaper, and more people will be able to afford it.

An Open House, will be held tomorrow at both, and I might try to talk AJ into going with me to one of them.   I can dream, can't I??  ::)

angelface555

Marilyne, I much prefer this second one   https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/115-Wood-Rd-Los-Gatos-CA-95030/19744541_zpid/   over the first one. It,(The first link); reminds me with the wrought iron, of a penthouse listing in Las Vegas that was way, way over the top Egyptian Pharaoh design! Just too much and little aesthetic.

Marilyn, all I can say is "take two, they're small".  Actually, the smaller one is more to my taste than the larger one.  Besides, I think my upright piano would not fit in with the decor of the larger home.  I think you are wise to stay where you are if you can do with the steps between the various levels.

I forgot what day it is and expected to watch my evening programs - which are not on tonight.  I watched a bit of golf while I was traveling the St Clair River and then turned off the golf.  It will be more interesting on Sunday, even Saturday.

Patricia, I took the tour of the deck and bow of the Paul A Tregurtha and recognized the video was taken in Detroit.  Across the Detroit River was Windsor, Ontario, Canada and the Ambassador Bridge is a route to cross the river into Canada.  I did not watch the next video.

I will see what it is like outside, but probably will stay inside until 8 pm or so when the sun goes down behind the buildings up on the hill.

A good Saturday HELLO TO ALL 🦋🦋🦋

We are having the craziest weather around Colorado.....no one would ever guess that yesterday was the first day of summer.  We had snow in the mountains and cool temperatures here.  Today is a repeat.....breaking all kinds of records.  A few minutes ago it was so dark out we had to turn on lights!  A few claps of thunder scared the beegeebers out of me🙀🙀

Yesterday I had to go to my doctors office to have my blood drawn for my yearly physical next week.  It is tradition that we go have a "throw caution to the wind" meal afterwards just cuz we can!  We tried to get in to two different breakfast places called "Snooze", and there was a one and a half hour wait at both, so we gave up!  Hard to believe on a Friday morning there could be that many people out eating breakfast.  Ended up going downtown, eating a expensive chicken sandwich at a open air place and enjoyed ourselves completely....acted like we did not have a care in the world UNTIL a down pour caught us!  We hoped it would not last too long and we could enjoy more time just looking around.  It was not meant to be🙀

LARRY, smiling as I think about you visiting with your sister and brother-in-law. ENJOY your time together, and your first meal out to a restaurant in quite sometime.

JACKIE, I, too, noticed the saying at the bottom of your post....sadly, it is so true😢. I am glad that you are involved in the bereavement group.  It is so important to do what you can to get by day by day after what you have been through.

MARY ANN, it is nice that you and Tom had a meal and a good chat together at IHOP. We have a IHOP near us, but we do not go there very often.  I hope the gardener lady gets the plants and grass planted the way you will enjoy it.  I need to see about planting some grass for my kitty as he sure does love to eat it.

MARILYNE, I will definitely check out those "cheap" places you have shared......I bet they are something.....you know they WILL sell, no questions about it!  Good to see a couple of you have already viewed the homes......I cannot wait to see them too.

Our DIL'S sister and family are going to be selling their multimillion dollar condo in San Francisco soon as they are moving to Colorado.  They will not even put it on the market until they move as they know it will sell immediately.....crazy real estate out there in Cali🤣🤣🤣

Have a good rest of your day......we are going to Dave and Family for dinner....we have missed them all having been gone for over a week.  Just got a call from Dave....we are to pick Matt, our oldest grandson up at a friends house on our way down.....makes us feel useful🥰🥰

Marilyne...
...if you get one of those houses, will there be " room enough in it " for me to come and stay with you?... sorry but it might be lavish but it doesn't appeal to me...
...to be honest I would prefer a quaint old English thatched cottage, although I would have to find one that is all on one level, yes I too can only dream...Quotings from my late father..." never say never, girl...".... and " stranger things have happened.."...and  " expect the unexpected..."

Vanilla-Jackie

Yes always expect the unexpected...well I didnt see Richards life being over on that fateful morning-mid-day that it ended suddenly and without warning...

I am to be taken by car to church this morning, not a communion but a prayer morning with maybe a few singing hymns...I know I want to go but I also know I am in a very fragile state at this present time, I know I am going to be crying in church..The senior in age person who will be collecting me from my home will take me and collect me but not be with me inside the church, I will need to pay him a minimal fee for this service but it will be a small price to pay if it gets me out amongst human beings for an hour or two...

Joy

Good morning on this beautiful sunny Sunday.  It is supposed to be a perfect Summer day, just like yesterday.  I did not make it outside yesterday, as I was having some stomach problems.  But, hopefully, I will get out today.

Jackie, I am so happy that you are going to be able to go to church. I hope that will give you a lot of comfort.  It does sound like you are feeling a little better.  Do you hear anything from your grandson?  I was so hoping that he would keep in  touch with you, after he  went back home.

Mary Ann, our electric company has the same kind of a program  Ours is called Peak Awards.  I have been in it for almost 10 years.  It has only been a couple times that they have had to cut the power back due to real hot weather, and I have never even noticed the difference.  I think it depends on the percentage that you choose. I think I have it at 50%.  The first year I had it, I received a $25 discount for the four months.... June, July, Aug. and Sept.  Then, it dropped down to $12.50.  This month, my actual bill was $28, so with the $12.50 discount, my bill is only $15.50. I don't ever remember it being that low before.  But, I don't use my A/C much during day, as I don't get much sun.  I usually only turn it on in the evening as it does seem a little stuffy then.  Do you get a discount for those 4 months.  Plus, it really hasn't been that hot yet.  This coming week is supposed to be the warmest so far this year.

I have a grocery order being delivered around noon, so I need to get myself moving and get dressed and put some dishes away.

I hope everyone will have a wonderful Sunday. Sure hope you all are having the same beautiful weather as it is here on the east coast.

Another hot summer day.  86F and supposed to reach 89F.  I don't think I'll be going outside—-at least until this evening when it is cooler.

Marilyne, the second less expensive house is much more to my liking.  It seems more homey in spite of the large rooms.  If a person buys either of those homes, they will have to hire plenty of help.

Besides going to the grocery store yesterday, I've been reading and just piddling around doing a few necessary household chores.  I don't think we turned on the TV yesterday at all.  I read a little news in online Washington Post that I subscribe to and that is about it.

I hope Larry's visit is going well and he didn't get too tired from going out to the restaurant.

Joy, you are an early bird.  I'm so slow in the morning.  It takes me a while to get myself going.

Mary Ann, if we could afford it, I would love to come up to your part of the country for the summer and stay here in the winter.  We do get the "snowbirds" here in winter.  But at this age of life, I don't think I would have the energy to go back and forth.  It makes me tired to think of it.  I guess we will have to be happy that we have air conditioning and be happy with what we have.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Vanilla-Jackie

Joy...
...it was a small village church with only three or four elderly couples but I did break down crying at the end when the female Lay Minister approached me to talk-welcome me, she sat with me while she was hugging me as I was sobbing my heart out...

Mary Ann

Jean, at the end of their times in Florida, the trip got to Dot.  Norm thought it was a "piece of cake" for her and did little to help.  I think she did not get wheelchair help at the airports and that may not have been possible because they flew Allegiant, which is a low-cost airline.  I remember when I got back home they let another woman and me sit in the hallway for over a half hour waiting to be pushed to the baggage area.  So I can see why she might not have tried for that.  Dot would have a couple suitcases plus her purse and having to push Norm who thought she needed no help.  We always tried to meet her in time to help.

On the ship channel, I saw a sailboat go by and I wish it could have been slower so it would still be on the water.  It was long and had three very tall masts but they were using their engine, no sails.  I wanted Tom to see it because he used to sail when he lived up north.

Jackie, I know it does you good to cry and get your feelings out of your system.  Rome wasn't built in a day and you won't be over Richard's death soon.

Joy, we do get a discount on the electric bill but without looking it up, I can't tell you what it is.  We do have an electric range and dryer, so my bill might be more than yours, but it isn't too much anyway.  I have an inside unit so we have added insulation in both the winter and summer.  I haven't had turn turn on the air very early at night yet.

Dot and I did our usual and had chocolate pie for a change.  We both agreed that we preferred the usual cream pies instead of the chocolate so it will be a while before we have that again.

Tom has just come home from church and I know he's going to "crash".

Good morning all.  It's after 11:00 AM here, and already 80 degrees - supposed to go into the mid 90's to 100 degrees today.  I doubt that we will go to see either of the open houses, that I posted here yesterday.  Too hot, and too much walking.  I'm sure there will be a designated parking area, that is a distance from the house, so as not to obstruct the overall look of the house from the front.

The larger of the two homes, will most likely sell to a Silicon Valley executive/CEO, who is from a foreign country.  Buyers from countries like China, Russia, Iran, India, UAR, generally want huge, opulent houses here.  I think it's probably because they cannot buy or build anything like that in their own countries.  I doubt that it will be purchased by an American Millionaire.  Way too much house for most Americans. On the other hand, I think the Four million dollar house will be purchased by an American.  Although it's excessive, it's in the price range that most young Silicon Valley workers, investors, etc., can afford.

Jackie - Even though it made you unhappy to attend church today, it was good for you to get out and begin to spend time around other people.  The Lay Minister, sound like a kind and understanding woman.  I hope you can go back again, if you feel like going.

Jean - I'm also spending most of my time inside where it is cool!  The problem is that I get kind of "stir crazy", after a couple of days and I want to get out. AJ hasn't been feeling his usual energetic self, so he has been content to just sit around and read, or do stuff on the computer.  Yesterday, I watched a movie on TV, during the day, which is something I rarely do.  It was on Turner, and was the old 1950 comedy, Father of the Bride, starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. I like it much better than the newer version, with Steve Martin.

Mary Ann - I felt sorry for Dot, reading about her struggling through the airport!  I'm surprised she didn't stage a revolt, somewhere along the line. Well, now that I think about it, I guess she did - by insisting that they sell their place in Florida, and move back permanently to Michigan.

Good late morning from a very smoky Interior! The last three days have been in the range of 87 to 89, so of course, we have had fires. One to the south is 23 miles from us and one to the west is 27 miles from here. It has been extremely dry with all-compassing burn bans, but today we have more humidity and less of the daily afternoon thundershowers, so they're making inroads on those two fires.

On the 21st, Solstice, I met three friends for coffee and shopping. We had a wonderful time visiting and gabbing for several hours, but the next day I was wrung out! My lower back still hasn't forgiven me.

Marilyne, I enjoyed the second smaller house. I could see living there if I was younger and richer! :)

I've been looking at YouTube videos of real estate in Eastern or Vancouver  Canada as well as the Las Vegas valley. I don't get the LV ideal. To me, landscaping isn't an area filled with gravel, synthetic grass and a few planted grasses placed two to three feet apart in the gravel. And the houses are close enough to practically touch!

The "mountains" were often small rock faces rather than actual mountains. It's, to me, not a mountain if visitors/tourists can climb one in a day trip. However, the realtor doing the videos was in construction before real estate and takes you through the ways a house is better or worse dealing not only with construction methods but also upgrades which may add two or three extra thousand or more to the purchase price.

Marilyn, the low-cost airlines don't provide any amenities so unless someone of the family showed up to help, Dot was on her own.  I mentioned how another woman and I were left for over half an hour before an airport employee saw us and got us to the baggage area.  You can ask for wheelchair service but if you fly Allegiant (or used to) you're much on your own.  The advantage is/was that Allegiant flies direct from Grand Rapids to St Pete and back - one way, no stops.  Dot was happy to have Norm sell the place, but she had plenty of help from family.  Norm always blamed her for making him sell the Florida house, but it was more Norm's family and Dot's family.  Norm was upset about it until the day he died!

I spent some time on the deck, but as the day wears on, the sun moves and hits where I sit.  I'll go back out about 8 pm and it will be more comfortable again.  When I went out earlier, the cat found shade under the love seat.  Yesterday he stayed there long enough that I forgot about him, but today when I put my feet on the deck, he was right beside me to get in the house.  It's 80 degrees here now, too, at a little after 4 pm.

My neighbor revamped my garden area under the kitchen window.  She took out all of the blocks for path and I'm going to see if she'll put one path back in.  It is a small area about 8 x 8.  She split the hostas and I think there are too many of them.  I told her to give some to anyone she knew who might want some as I do not want a hosta garden.  I want her to replant some of my myrtle so I'll have a ground cover.  I assume that is not her style because she hasn't done it yet, but I think she will.  I don't say much because she is doing this on her own, even buys the plants, however, in the fall I give her a gift certificate for a nearby restaurant that I know she likes.  Her efforts are not unappreciated!

Patricia, I agree about the Las Vegas area.  I'd love to live in a mountain area, maybe like Denver.  I will say Dad and visited a friend in Tempe AZ where the lawn was all stones with cactus plants in certain areas and I liked that.  I have an idea age has a lot to do with preferences.  I think with anything, we look at it in our present age and if we can't manage a thing now, we'd rather not have it.  Maybe that's why I did not like the first house - it was too gaudy and I'm not a gaudy person.

The sun has been out today but it is not out now.

HELICOPTER RIDE in NEW YORK CITY ( NYC ) - 15 minutes - start to finish

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aufyfoM2RI

Marilyne

We didn't go to either Open House.  Just too hot here today.  New real estate listings here in town will be appearing every week, so we'll have plenty of houses to visit all Summer, if we want to.

Patricia - I agree that those Las Vegas houses are absolutely hideous.  Miles and miles of tract houses, mostly all look alike, and the setting is so bleak!  I don't know if you've been to LV, but it's flat desert - nothing natural growing there, except for sagebrush. The housing areas are outside of town, heading out from the Casino Strip.  The magnificent Hoover Dam, is about 20-plus miles out of town, and other than that there is nothing, except the huge neon casino's.  The old LV downtown is small and drab. There are older houses near downtown, that were built in the 20's and 30's, and those neighborhoods do have mature trees.  Thousands of people work in the Casinos, and they're the ones who buy those barren looking houses out in the boondocks.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I did watch some of the NY Helicopter ride but I've never been to New York, so I could not identify anything.

This morning before I went to church, I did watch the ships for a few minutes and a huge sailboat went by.  Tom used to sail; he'd rent a sailboat for a church group and take them in the upper regions of Lake Huron.  Tom used to have a Captain's license but I don't know if he still does because he can't go on a boat because of Meniere's disease - he gets dizzy on a boat now.  He misses it something awful!

Anyway, Tom gave me a link to the sailboat and I "took" a couple of trips.  I'll find the link and come back and put it here in case anyone is interested.  The ship is based in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan but when I saw the boat it was coming under the Blue Water Bridge on its way to Cleveland.

MaryAnn, the sailboat defintely would have been interesting for me!

Marilyne, I had relatives in Reno so spent lots of time there in the sixties. One time we went to Las Vegas and the three of us girls stayed overnight at the hotel while the folks took in the scene. I was eleven at the time with my sisters, thirteen and two. I remember us getting buckets of ice and soda from the hallway machines. The pop was not usually allowed, and we had Mom's prepared sandwiches for dinner, so it was unusual for us kids.

Dad had purchased a new car, and we flew to the Malaspina ferry, close to Anchorage, traveled to Washington, picked up the car and drove to N. California, Colorado, Nevada, Kansas, Missouri and back again spending three months visiting relatives. My Dad had it planned like a military maneuver with driving times and sightseeing rigidly planned. Bathroom breaks were allowed only at gas stations when gas was needed so no drinking en route. It was a different time and we went outside about every ten years on the average.

Webcam watchers, I hope this is a link to the Times Square Earthcams.   Any of the four cams on the left side of the strip at the bottom will show a different live view of  the crowds waiting for the Wallenda high wire walk (being broadcast on ABC tv.)   I don't see the apparatus the Wallendas are using but the "Crossroads" cam indicated it would show the walk.

However, it's a two hour show and my guess is that at least the first 90 minutes will be "build up" to the main event.
