Callie - I always enjoy reading about the many interesting trips that you've taken to places that I would love to visit!  I had a friend when I was in High School, who moved to the Province of New Brunswick.  We wrote back and forth for a while, but then lost track.  Since then, I've been aware that NB exists, but that it's never mentioned as far as news stories or weather, or vacations are concerned.  It seems to be by far the "quietist" of the Provinces.  I wouldn't even know it was a Province, if it weren't for my long ago friend.    I think I'll hold off on ordering Where the Crawdad's Sing, and just stay on the library wait list for now. I also read both Hillbilly Elegy and Educated, and was not a huge fan of either one.  In fact, I was actually incredulous, reading Educated, and will always wonder how much "poetic license" the author took??  Meaning, there were too many things that just didn't ring true for me . . .  plus there was something about her general attitude as a grown adult, that was annoying/grating.

MarsGal - I looked at Both Port Huron cams that I have, and neither one had anything showing.  There was a cam operator on one of them, who was jumping around and zooming in and out, and kind of made me dizzy.  I assume he was looking for something to focus on, but I couldn't take the quick moves.

When I got to the Duluth Canal cam, I was just in time to see the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr,  departing.  It looks very blustery and cold there, and all the onlookers were bundled up.  I didn't check the temperature link.     Looks like an interesting Russian ship arriving tonight, that I hope to see.  I think it said 6 or 6:30, Duluth time, which would be around 4 or 4:40 here, and would be a good time for me to watch.  The name of the ship is BBC Plata.  I've never seen a Russian ship, that I can remember?

Good Morning Patricia!  I just saw your message . . . posted while I was putting my together.

Mary Ann

I found my previous post and was within the 30 minutes to change, tried to change and got all sorts of flak about not posting a new topic and also that I had posted that before.  So here - I found Lake Onalaska is part of La Cross County in Wisconsin and is on an island between Wisconsin and Minnesota.  I may have seen it when we crossed the Mississippi at La Cross but I don't know.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Marilyne,  "...Crawdads" is fiction; the other two are memoirs. Still the same theme, though.
It's still at the top of all the Book Lists I see so don't let me influence you not to try it.

Re: my travels.  My husband liked to "go visiting" but wasn't too interested in traveling for travel's sake.  We did take some family trips when the sons were growing up but that changed after they were on their own.

As I think I've said,I was 57 when he died and, when I'd gotten my life in order, traveling was something I really wanted to do. So I booked a tour to Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos on my own.  We'd go through Amarillo where I had family and friends and I decided that, if I got that far and didn't think I could continue, I'd get off the bus and tell them to pick me up on the way home.  Took "pot luck" on a roommate and had a great time.
Then found friends who were interested and only booked two other trips as a Single...mainly because I wanted to go and couldn't find a friend who did.
I took each of my 3 grandchildren to an Intergenerational Elderhostel the summer after their 9th birthdays.  Last one was for grandson and he'll be 22 in November. Then knew it was time for me to hang up my travelin' shoes.  Bridge foursome broke up about the same time so now I'm very content to be a homebody.

Patricia, I clicked on the sound icon and heard the clicks.  From that I found there is a lightning strike every second of the day - somewhere.  Fortunately, all the strikes are not in my neighborhood.

Good morning. I am just marking my place.  It is a very cloudy morning,  and supposed to get hot again for the next couple days. Summer can hang on as long as it wants. LOL  I know most of you are waiting for the colder temps.

I have had my breakfast, but not quite "up and atem yet".  I an planning on settling back in my recliner and read for a little while. No big plans for today.

I will try to get back later on.  Meanwhile, have a great morning.

MarsGal

Good Morning, Joy.

My laptop went weird on my again last evening. After setting it to do a virus scan yesterday and walking away, I forgot I still had the machine on. Not for the first time, when I went back up to check on it, it had gone into sleep mode and would not come out. So I powered it off which meant it was going to drain down my battery overnight. This morning, it was the same. It wouldn't power back up, so I just left it plugged in to finish recharging the battery and went to my Linux machine to find a solution. Well, apparently you have to press and hold the power button down for up to a minute until it beeps to recover it from sleep mode. When I came back upstairs to try that (I hadn't tried holding the power button down before), there it was in all it's magnificence taunting me. It had powered back up in the five minutes it took me to find a solution and get my cup of tea.

In an hour or so, I plan on going out and mowing the front yard.

MarsGal, I learn something new every day.  I had never heard that about holding down the power button but I've never had to do that.  I have a idea it depends on what kind of computer one has and what program they use.  My computer does have its own idiosyncrasies.

I've had my first breakfast and in about a half hour I'll look for something else to eat.

We had thunder a few minutes ago and I haven't heard anything since, not even rain.  Radar does show a storm in the area.  Rain may come; I just looked at the Grand Haven site and you can hardly see anything.

A high school class mate who has kept tabs on everyone, sent a letter out with the news that of 250 grads, there are 18 of us left.  We've been out of HS 78 years.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

Good morning everyone.  Another hot day here in Northwest Florida.

Hope all of you are OK.  How are you feeling, Marilyne?

Not much to talk about just hope everyone is having a good day.

Mary Ann

The sun is shining now and I saw the road was wet so we did have some rain at the time it thundered.  Not enough to whet your whistle.  One thing about the weather these days - up here at least, is that you don't know what to wear.  The thermometer beside me reads 78 degrees but I think it is in the sun so we probably are nearer 70 degrees.  I am wearing capri pants.  I'd rather wear shorts.

Robin will be here this afternoon so I won't be cooking anything.  Either Tom will go out for a pizza or they'll eat out and I'll fix something here.  Not much happens on the Tuesday she is here, other than what she does.  I'm going to see what she thinks about moving some of the living room furniture.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

A late morning greeting to all Bait and Tacklers.  :)

Mary Ann - Your Tuesday's with Robin, sound like by Tuesday's with Sandy. Nothing much happens, on the days she is here. She just comes to do her weekly washing, half of which she does at the nearby laundromat.  So there is a lot of in and out, and shopping in between.  I usually give her money to buy enough groceries for AJ and me, for the next couple of days.  Our outside temps sound about like yours today. Outside it says 75 degrees, but I don't think it's that high yet.  More like barely 70, and a cool breeze blowing.  It's only 11:30 here now, so it will warm up later.

Jean - I don't have much of interest to talk about either, but somehow I manage to ramble on and on about unimportant subjects!  ::)   I like to read what people have to say every day, whether it's newsworthy or not.  Thanks for asking about me.  I had a stomach upset that lasted for a couple of days, but is gone now, and I'm feeling better.

MarsGal - Oh yes, I remember long ago, when I used to mow the lawn! Those days are in the distant past, when I was young and strong.  I admire you for keeping on with it.  AJ still does ours, and says he enjoys it.  When it comes to pushing or pulling something heavy, it doesn't seem to bother him at all.  Besides the lawn, he also does the vacuuming, and takes the three trash cans down our long steep driveway every Wednesday, and pulls them back up the next day, after they have been emptied.   After his surgery, our son or dil, came over and handled trash days for a few weeks.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I will say that my Tuesdays with Robin do accomplish something.  My job is to find something for her to do and she finds things to do besides what I have.  Today she will change my bed, maybe water my plants (we had a slight rain) and we're talking about rearranging the living room furniture.  In this small room, there are only a couple ways I can arrange it.  I have only two walls for the couch and other furniture.  Things have not been moved for many years and I cannot do it alone.

I used to love mowing the lawn and we had a fairly good sized yard.  I had an electric mower and was careful to keep the cord on one side so I didn't mow over and cut it.  I used to mow the lawn at the cottage too, especially since I was alone - who else would do it? - then I would sit out on the lawn and relax.

Our temperature is now 83 degrees and I am not dressed for it; I'm wearing capri pants.  If I don't move, I'm OK but I'm going to turn on the a/c.

I don't have much to talk about, either, but I manage to fill a lot of space about it.  I have this compulsion to go into detail, which is not needed, but you get it anyway.  Much ado about nothing!

After Robin is finished here, Tom may get a pizza for our supper or he and Robin will eat out before going to Bible study.  If they go out, I'll fix something here.  That is our usual Tuesday now.

Mary Ann

SCFSue

Good morning, Mary Ann and whoever might be looking in this morning.  I'm not dressed as I need to shower and get out for my morning walk around my neighborhood.  I am going to play bridge with my Wednesday bridge club after lunch and that will make a nice afternoon out for me.  Our hostess Olyne will have something yummy for dessert (she's a great cook) and we'll have a good time.  Most of our members are fellow church goers.

It's another scorcher here in Auburn.  Last night's forecast predicted very high 90's in early afternoon.  So I'm glad I'll be inside playing bridge!

BTW, I've had a nice letter from Jack from West Virginia.  We've been longtime friends and I was glad to hear from him.  When Bob died and my sister Anne still lived in Charleston, WV, I drove up there at least every summer and Jack brought his dogs to meet me on the turnpike.  Now neither of my sisters live in West Virginia and I haven't been up there  more than once since Bob died.  Jack is doing well and still taking his dog to the park.  His 60 y.o. daughter lives near him and is a good help to him.

Have a nice day, Every One.
Sue

Marilyne

Sue - Good to see you here this morning. Nice that you've stayed in touch with Jack.  I enjoyed his photos so much, and miss seeing them.  Those Golden Retrievers are the most photogenic dogs, in my opinion.  They always look beautiful and poised, in every picture.  Have a nice time today playing bridge.  I haven't played bridge in about 30 years.  I'm sure I've forgotten just about everything, and would have to take a few lessons before I would ever dare to play.

I'm planning to go to the last remaining shoe store in my general area today, and see if I can find anything to fit my painful feet.  I have ordered so many pairs of shoes from Zappos and other online stores, and have had to send them all back. (Free returns, thank Heaven!) I just cannot get a good fit, but I have to keep on trying, because I don't have anything for when the weather turns cooler.  There is an outlet mall in the city of Gilroy, which is about 50 miles South of here, that has a number of shoe stores.  I dread the drive down there, but I'm willing to go, if I can't find anything today.  If anyone has any suggestions for comfortable shoe brands, please let me know?

Mary Ann

Sue, I'm glad you heard from Jack and that he is well.  I sent him a message when he left  S&F and never heard from him and I don't expect to hear from him.  Our only connection was that I was born in Wellsburg, not far from Wheeling, but we left when I was 15+ months old.

I think you said you are not driving yet so when you go to your bridge club, I assume a friend picks you up?

We're to have a warm one today, not a scorcher, but plenty warm.  It is near 80 degrees now.  I'm not dressed yet and I think I'll wear shorts again.

Robin rearranged my living room yesterday, all by herself, and it looks very nice.  Now, the thing is to keep it looking that way!  There are some pieces I must find room for.  Robin does a good job but she doesn't put things away - she leaves the vacuum cleaner in the middle of the room, for instance.  She knows where to get it to use it but it does not go back where she got it!  I guess I can do that for her.  Anyway, I'm happy with the results because the old arrangement had been in place for many years.

This morning I saw they were having a ceremony in Port Huron in honor of September 11.  Unfortunately, they did not have sound.  I could see a group singing, but I could not near them.  I had my computer sound on and also the program sound (YouTube).

Marilyn, I wish I could help you in the shoe department.  I can't wear just any shoe, but I do find I should get "good" shoes.  I do not wear floppies, for instance, and usually get Hush Puppies for every day.  I haven't worn a dress shoe in years, but I have a couple of pairs of Naturalizers and they both fit yet (old, old).

I doubt that anyone would take it to court in the US!  ;D   If they were to be so bold, I doubt it would be considered a "work accident"!  ha ha

Thinking about 18 years ago......
Thinking about being in Pennsylvania and New York at our wonderful Bash......
Feeling all the caring and the supportive Americans and wishing we could all be that caring about each other today.......come on people....WE CAN BE THAT WAY AGAIN 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I remember all the flags flying and candles burning in many of the homes.......
I 💗💗 how America was back then.....18 years ago, and it felt mighty good and I was PROUD to be an AMERICAN 🇺🇸🥰

I can not stop humming this song.......

https://youtu.be/s3MtgpL4fkI

Where were you when the world stopped turnin'
That September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or workin' on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?
Did you weep for the children, they lost their dear loved ones
Pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out with pride for the red, white, and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love
Where were you when the world stopped turnin'
That September day?
Teachin' a class full of innocent children
Or drivin' down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor?
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages
And speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on I Love Lucy reruns?
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Stand in line to give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love
I'm just a singer of simple songs

And I remember this from when I was young

Jenny, I never heard that song, nor read the words.  Who sang it?  Makes one think.

Michigan has been under siege today.  I watched a bad storm at Port Huron on the St Clair River and it was a bad one.  I don't know about damage because the camera is located in a specific area, but at times I could not see across the river.  Things are better now.

About a half hour or so a "Tornado Warning" siren sounded here.  The siren didn't seem to bother the cat but he seemed confused at the noise.  He didn't seem to need any comfort.  The Warning is over for Kent County, but Ionia County to our East is still under Warning. A lot of Kent County is without power but we have it.  We did have a blip but it only bothered non-battery clocks.

Mary Ann

Beverly

Hi from beautiful Vermont! So far we've had nice weather with a light rain this morning. Sunday we had a get-together at our daughter's in NH with two of our granddaughters and three great-grands. The greats have grown so much in the past year! The 3 yr old with a crop of red curls is so cute.
Tomorrow we' ll spend the day with daughter Donna. She's having a few good days. Next chemo treatment is Monday.

I'm using my tablet and really miss my PC and mouse!

Marilyne

JENNY - Thank you for posting that wonderful tribute to September 11, 2001 - that very bad/sad day that happened eighteen years ago.  I watched many of the memorial services today, and one thing struck me . . . things have changed dramatically in the United states, since then!  People have changed and attitudes have changed, and I don't mean for the better. The American people are different now.   I'm not talking about politics . . . just the overall attitude of the American people.   Well, that's the way I see it, but I'm sure most people would disagree.

BEVERLY - I'm happy to hear that you're having such a good time in Vermont, and also spending time in N.H.   I'm glad Donna is doing well, and I hope she  will continue to do so.  Shirley Navarro posted here in B&T last week, and she is doing great! She also had lymphoma, and went through the chemotherapy just this past winter. She said that she is now cancer free!

MarsGal

We had thunderstorms overnight, but nothing bad. It looks like we might get some more rain yet today. The rain did nothing to cool things down. At 5:44am, the temp is at 70o.

I did catch a few ships on the St. Clair Yesterday, but missed the big storm. Got a nice look at Lee A. Tregurtha at Port Huron in the evening. Also, saw Timbuctoo at Marine City. Timuctoo is listed as a custom motorized sailing vessel and, in 1991, was for sale at $300,000. The last position on Marine Traffic shows her at Galveston Texas several years ago. I could not find any other info. Interesting looking vessel. https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/photos/of/ships/shipid:399456/#forward Of course it looks a little more worn that the picture now.

NAO Santa Maria is at Halifax NS, while Bluenose II, Picton Castle and Pride of Baltimore are at Lunenburg NS. I found a webcam for Lunenburg, but it is not live stream, still shots only. Showing now (6am EST or 7am NS time) looks like Pride of Baltimore on the left and Bluenose II in the middle. https://www.novascotiawebcams.com/en/webcams/lunenburg-harbour/ This site also has pix of other NS websites.

Tomereader1

The song was recorded by Alan Jackson.

Mary Ann

Jackie, where are you?  The last post I find here is Sunday, Sept 8, where you said you were not feeling well.  We are concerned about you, even so far away.

We had rain overnight but no more storm.  Radar shows scattered rain.

MarsGal, I noticed a few ships on the St Clair River too but only a few.  It really rained hard in Port Huron; fortunately their 9/11 ceremony was finished, otherwise the people would have been soaked as the rain came down in buckets full.  They were worried about the water level all summer and things had tapered off.  The rain yesterday must have added more.  I'll have to look at Algonac to see how their boardwalks look.

I have not pursued the Tall Ships but that was a nice picture shown in Lunenburg.

Marilyn, I agree with you that people have changed since 9/11.  When I was younger, I used to say that each generation was more lenient than the previous one.  Lenient is not the right word, nor is relaxed, but it seems many parents wanted their children to have things that they did not have in their youth.  So now we have a lot of "me first" people.  This is after several generations, not just one.

Beverly, have fun with your families in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Thanks, Tomereader.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure." -H.L. Mencken, writer, editor, and critic (12 Sep 1880-1956)

Patricia, my computer must be missing posts because the last post I have for Jackie in THIS folder was Sunday, September 8, around noon my time.  I knew she had posted elsewhere because I looked it up in the member list.  Sunday, she answered MarsGal and said she had not been well.

I think our mowers are done, but we are having road work done nearby and there is that noise.  If it isn't one thing, it's another.

I haven't done anything special since my last post, so I'll leave it there.
