Today I think I will get out of the house a while and do a little shopping. Other than that, I have nothing scheduled. Tomorrow, though, my sister and I will be going to the first Welsh Society meeting of the season. Instead of Hoss's, we will be going to a local restaurant, but a bit farther to drive. On Thursday, Oscar goes in for his annual check-up.

I watched some interesting doings at Sarnia on the BoatNerd site. Two days ago, I watched Cuyahoga as she tried to dock at the same dock as the Tall Ships were. Unfortunately Isabella G, a much larger ship, was docked on the other side and made it difficult for Cuyahoga to back in. Finally, the she backed away a little and went in head first. I got to see the crew lower a ladder and put netting under it, I guess in case anyone fell off the ladder. I don't know what kind of difficulty that made for unloading. They are both still there. Oh, and I did get to watch for awhile Isabelle G getting loaded.

The other thing I watched was a tug (didn't catch which one) dock for the night just up inside the channel into the marina. Very interesting watching them, with their very, very bright lights, pushing the barge around to get it parallel with the dock and then push it in up close. There were three crew on the barge to tie it down, but I didn't see anyone on the ground, so I don't know how they managed. So, the tug holds at least four crew members.

They guys have been pesting for brunch early today. I put them off for more than a half hour, so I guess I should go tend to them now that it is almost nine here.

If anyone remembers my Grand Haven posts, they lit up the catwalk last night.  In my life, I do not remember even knowing there were lights, let alone seeing them.  Of course, we didn't go to Grand Haven at night, however, my Sunday School class used to spend weekends there in a cottage and I don't think we went to the beach at night.

MarsGal, you pay a lot more attention to the ships than I do.  I also think there are interesting things going on the Boatnerd cam.  And it always seems to be lighted up.

Jenny, what a pretty granddaughter.  You really have been blessed with not only smart but handsome grandsons and granddaughter (is Kate the only one?)  I had the same thought about your family flying into Hong Kong with all that's going on there.  I hope they'll leave soon.

Good morning all you Bait and Tacklers!  It is very sunny here this morning in Auburn and I need to get dressed and outside for my morning walk before the heat becomes unbearable. I hope everyone looking in is having a nice morning and that your day is comfortable.

Have a nice day, Every One.

Mary Ann - I enjoyed the fireworks at Grand Haven!  I remember when they started the restoration, but had forgotten about it.  So now I guess when we click on GH at night, we will see the lights year around?  I'll leave myself a note to check on it tonight.

MarsGal - I used to love to get out and do a little shopping. (Other than groceries). My favorite destination was one of the malls that had a Macy's, and all the surrounding boutique style shops, restaurants, etc.  Haven't done that in years, but I have fond memories  -  especially during the Holiday season!  Have fun at your Welsh Society meeting!

Jenny - Your granddaughter is adorable . . .  A very pretty girl!  Does she look like Michele, or Dave?
You mentioned a few days ago, that they had lived in Lake Oswego, OR?  I lived there off and on for a year - way back in the mid 1950's!   My dad worked for a paper company based in Portland, so my folks moved there and lived in  Lake Oswego for a couple of years.  I was in college at the time, so I spent summers and Christmas vacations there, and I loved it.  It was a beautiful little town back then, and I'm sure it still is . . . only bigger.  Now that I'm writing this down, I remember telling you this once before a few years ago, so please excuse my repeat reminiscing!   ::)  :)

Good morning to Sue, and all others who will be posting this morning.

Jackie.
Just keep aiming to find a way of getting out of that park home . I have same problem with people saying they will come todo certain things and then never show. These are people I pay. Some come first day ,pay them for that time and the never show again. I am just trying to get rid of things also
Place is full after all these years. Easy to give to places and I still drive. Also twice I have put things in my front yard with sign. FREE And they get taken fast. Just taking me time. I don't reall think you will gain a lot by moving close to your living family as they havnt helped you up to now and sound like they have problems you don't need. Also close to your dead family no help. Just aim to get settled in a place that will be best for you. There I believe is where you will get your help. I still think that UK has best help for seniors needing it than any other country. Just have to work on getting it yourself.

Busy morning around here.  We found out Michele will not be doing radiology right away, so we booked flights to Sacramento to see our boy and his mama and daddy.  We had to pay a premium being within two weeks, but that is just what you have to do!  I also booked flights for Jonah's first Bday the 6 of December and for Christmas.  Not sure if we can do both of those or not, but I am trying to be proactive 🤪🤪

Thank you all for the kind words about Our Kate.  She is a delightful young lady that is very dedicated to her dancing, and is a very good student.

YES, MARY ANN, Kate is the ONLY granddaughter.  I enjoyed the link you shared. We are concerned also about the issues in Hong Kong, and read this morning that there was someone killed there last night😩. Brian looked into changing this part of their trip but he made the reservations so long ago that it was going to be very costly to change them after all of this craziness started.  They will be flying home from there on Friday.

JACKIE, no one likes to feel out of control, so we do understand!  As limited as your choices are, you have done the best you can to find out what is available to you in the Dorset area, and it appears that it would be a safe place for you to live and a place where you would have help getting to where you need to go, etc.  You very well should be able to attend your MS meetings and a Church that would certainly help you to feel accepted and comfortable.  There will probable people your age with health issues, and you could possibly feel very comfortable.  That being said, IF your grandson will step up and help you return to the area you WANT to be in, then he is saying he will help you to get there AND to help with your needs after you have made the move.  Being in your situation is nothing that any of us could handle well if we were in your shoes🤬.

CALLIE, you made me smile at the thought of YOU using "that teacher tone" when telling JACKIE how you might approach some of the unfriendly and unhelpful people that she is dealing with.  I think many of us would like to have a shot at them! 😩

MARILYNE, Kate definitely looks like both of her parents, and her mama is a very pretty lady.  Please never worry about repeating anything to me....Dave's Family l❤️ved Lake Oswego.  They have many many friends there and still stay in touch with them. One special couple came for Matt's ceremony this past weekend.  Matt and their son were very close, and sadly their only child, a son was killed in a tragic accident in 12/11/2014.  A tree fell on the car his mom and he were in.  Mom is still physically challenged by her injuries.  We, too, loved LO.  We lived there for 6 months in an apartment when Kate was born to help out as D and M had adopted a son that was just 15 months old when Kate was born.  It is a very special area and I know you must have enjoyed it as well. The other place they lived and really liked was Healdsburg CA.  Dave had a private surgery practice there when he graduated from Med School.

JEANNE, i certainly see the logic in your comments to JACKIE regarding her location to live.  Many truths about the facts you pointed out.  JACKIE just has to be objective about the best situation for HER. I know you understand the social health care situation much better than any of us.

Enjoy the rest of your day😘

I always enjoy the posts, especially the lonngg posts that everyone provides.

Today I had a small skin cancer removed from my nose.  It took an entire 10 minutes!  Then we waited 40 minutes before we were called back for a checkup.  We were there another 10 minutes and on our way home.  Altogether we were gone 2 1/2 hours.  In January I have an appointment for a body scan, which I think is not much but will take time.  Then I received a letter from the hospital wanting me to have a Wellness check - a yearly thing.  I'd think by this time in my life they'd leave me alone!!!

On a brighter side, James is coming about 5 pm to help Tom with something they both are working on and he's bringing the twins with him.  Their mother will pick them up within an hour.  I see them so seldom so it will be a treat for me.  They will be three in February and are starting to talk and make sense.  Kendrick will disappear when they get here - probably downstairs, but that is where Tom and James will be.  Tom and James will stay with the girls until Alicia gets here because I don't think I should be babysitting.  But I can enjoy them!

We are starting to hear thunder and so far the rain is quiet.

Jenny, nice news about Michele's radiation, give her a little vacation.  And give you and Bob another one - to Sacramento.  I did not realize that Jonah's birthday was December 6 - that was Norm's birthday.

Jeanne, thank you so much for your input to Jackie.  You know more about the UK system than any of us.  I know I wrote something similar a few posts ago, but I want you to know how much I appreciate it.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Jenny,  I did not intend to use "the Teacher Tone with Jackie. I was going to attempt to help her use it. I decided not to try because posts are often misinterpreted because we can't hear the tone of voice the writer is using.

Mary Ann

Callie, I have a tendency to be sarcastic at times.  I have to watch what I write in case someone would interpret it wrong.  I agree, you can't tell the tone of voice in the written word.

There are two types of Russian immigrants here locally and "The old Believers" is the oldest and largest. Today I found this. They are similar to the Amish in beliefs and behavior.

Old Believers Museum
Home to the Russian Old Believers, the cluster of villages along the western shore of Estonia's Lake Peipsi is frozen in time. Housed in a few rooms behind a school, this museum offers a glimpse into the village residents' centuries-old way of life.

Marilyne

Patricia - Very interesting to read about, The Old Believers.  It always amazes me to hear or read about a group of people (anywhere in the world) who are determined to stay with the old ways, old religions, and have no interest in joining the "modern world". I always wonder if these religious groups like this one or the Amish, ever have new members join their community?  How do these groups survive, without fresh blood?   That's the key to the success of the Mormon/LDS Church.  They are constantly recruiting new members, and spreading the Word about their beliefs. Also, they have moved forward and embraced modern times.

I'll be back to say hello to everyone else, after breakfast - which will be oatmeal this morning.  Way down on my list of favorites, but no alternatives in my kitchen today.

Marilyne, these people or sect, left the Russian Orthodox church for the same reasons and in the same period as the Amish left the Catholic church. They follow the same beliefs about clothing, farming, and the old ways of behavior and eschewing modern ways. They immigrated to Alaska when it was still a Russian territory. The new Russian immigrates avoid them as heretics.

Your Brain Chooses What to Let You See

"Last week, Quanta reported on the filtering mechanisms that allow us to focus our attention on stimuli of interest — that let us tune out the music in a room to listen to a nearby conversation, or disregard greens, blues and yellows in a crowd when searching for a friend wearing red. That kind of processing, which involves the suppression of some sensory data to highlight signals that are more relevant, is directed by a goal."

https://tinyurl.com/y2s98sus

Mary Ann

Patricia, I notice I do selective hearing when I concentrate on something and later realize there is music on the TV, which I have on as background music anyway.

Tom and I went to lunch and for the second time recently ran into a long time friend.  She came over and talked with us and I waved at her husband but he stayed put.

This morning I watched a few ships on the St Clair River and it was very still there.  The ships seemed to glide over the water, not making a sound.  It was eerie.  It would have been more eerie if there had been a fog.

We have a rainy, overcast day, but no snow yet.  I saw where Montana had four inches and Wjoan said they had snow in her area.

I suppose the Old Believers increase their numbers by the births of children.  But if the children leave home, there may be none to believe.

The ones here in this area don't seem to assimilate but I only see the ones in old-fashion clothing, men have long beards, ladies in long dresses.  The clothing reminds me of that old television show, Laura Ingalls.

The priest wears long ankle-length cassocks. Both the regular Russian and the old believers seem to have large families.  Both speak Russian however while the OB's have been here over two centuries, the regular Russians have a heavy accent. We do have Mennonites here farming in Delta Junction. But I have never seen any Amish here or heard about them in the state.

I remember once years ago, (2013?); in Safeway in the summer when there were Russian speakers, Alaska Natives and Filipino speakers talking. This lady loudly yelled speak English! Then she started telling them to leave if they weren't going to follow American customs. She really was upset when store management asked her to leave and people clapped.

Another hot day but it is supposed get cooler next, according to the Weather station.

Angel, that is an interesting article about our brains filtering information.

Mary Ann, when you say that you and Tom went out for lunch and I'm wondering what was on the menu.  We are just having some leftovers and I'm not real enthused about it.

Marsgal, have you ever been to Wales?  I don't recall if you have mentioned whether you have relations there.  I saw a TV mystery series a year or so ago and it seemed rather bleak and windswept.  I've wondered since if it is really like it was betrayed on TV.

It is 2pm here so I guess I will get busy.  We had a late breakfast this morning so not in a big hurry.

Mary Ann

Jean, I can't help you much with the restaurant menu because I had two eggs over medium with raisin toast!  Tom had a Club Sandwich.  The restaurant is kind of a short-order place and closes at 3 pm, so nothing fancy.  A reason I like it is it's quiet, yet has a nice busyness about it.  There are two restaurants in our area like that with plain simple food.  I generally have sandwiches because they're easier for me to eat.  Also, I eat half a sandwich and bring the other half home.  Sandwiches because with knife-and-fork-food, my head is at a level where I can shovel in the food and I don't like that.

Tom has a Bible study on Friday mornings and this restaurant is where he has the group.  There are 8 to 10 men and they sit at a large round table.  Tom is very people oriented anyway but he knows all of the wait people there.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I left after breakfast this morning, and drove to the SAS shoe store in San Jose.  They are having a special on all shoes - $15 dollars off on one pair, and $35 off if you buy two pair.  They didn't have my size in any of the styles I would like to have for Winter, so I left there, and went to another shoe store that's in the same vicinity.  Nice styles, but nothing in my size.  I'll check Zappos online, but they rarely have my size either, so I may have to go barefoot all winter!  :D  :crazy2:

Nothing else of interest here.  I think I mentioned that Shelley and Claire are coming on Friday for the weekend, so I'm going to have to devote tomorrow to shopping for something nice for dinner on Friday.  Saturday night, we'll probably go out for dinner.  I'll let them decide where they would like to eat?

Mary Ann - Your two eggs over easy with raisin toast, sounds good to me. Makes me think of what people now call "comfort food".  Plain and simple and familiar.  I haven't had raisin bread in a long time, but I now plan to put it on my shopping list.

Cottoncandy - Nice to see you here in B&T!  :)  Please come back and join us anytime.

Jean - like you, I also thought the story that Patricia posted was very interesting - how we can tune out or filter what is going on around us, when we need or want to focus on a specific thing.  One of those things that you don't realize you're doing.  I hope your weather has cooled down and is comfortable.  saw a message from Sue, in Alabama, and she said it was predicted to be 100 degrees there today.

Joy - I don't see a message from you today?  I hope you're feeling rested, and that we'll hear from you later, or tomorrow.

Callie, Jackie and Jenny - Hello to all three of you!  I still have more to say, so will follow up later this afternoon or this evening!  Now I must find something to eat, and take a reading break!  :hello:

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I have similar experience to your shoes, only in food.  I like to have a chicken salad sandwich occasionally.  When I shopped in person, I could buy it in a small container and it lasted me the week.  It was just chopped up chicken, mayo, perhaps onion, celery and I don't know what else.  Since we shop online, I can't find what I want.  What comes up is ridiculous everything from chicken soup to cat food (with chicken in it).  I did find some last time but it really was a salad with big chunks of chicken and included grapes.  It was nice eating by itself, but didn't really go good on bread.

I think I'll go to Norway in Genealogy to see if I can get any leads to family.  Norway shows up on my DNA.

Mary Ann

MaryAnn, my problem with food is I fantasied about something when going out with friends. Last week I wanted a roast beef sandwich on rye with brown mustard and a sour dill pickle. Of course, the sandwich didn't meet expectations. The other day I wanted a fresh peach half with bleu cheese, and again, it was just okay. I wonder if I'm the only one doing this?

I, (according to Ancestory.com); have 4% Norwegian to go with my Scot, Irish and Welsh. But that was to be expected knowing about Vikings raiding and or settling the Celtic lands before the Saxons and Normans arrived. At the time there were more Picts than other ethnicities.

Learning how my DNA traveled from around there and then to America was fascinating. After finding that my maternal greatuncle was correct in his book, I didn't feel the need to pay more for what I already knew. Altho, I've thought about checking out 23 and me just to see if their medical propensities match with what I know about the last three generations.

Marilyne, I couldn't even find shoes unless my mom special ordered until I became an adult. I have a wide, C width foot and my arch is so high that it comes to the top of my shoe's side. If I walk barefoot in the sand, there is no bridge, just two balls,  with smaller balls for toes.

MarsGal

Jean, my Mom was Welsh. She grew up in Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan County. She met Dad while she was working in Bath during the war. There are relatives in South Wales, but I have no idea where they all have gotten to. When we were there, they were scattered about with Uncle Alvin's family in Cardiff, Aunt Jean (I think) was in Wolverhampton (her husband was in the RAF), some in Tenby, Bath, and Nanna and at one of the boys and various other relatives were still in Merthyr when we visited. I think only one aunt may still be alive, but not sure. We got to visit St. Fagin's Manor/Estate, Cardiff Castle, and lots of very old churches. Oh, and Sue and I did the bar rounds with Cousins John and Gary. On the way back to London, we stopped at Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral.

Our local Welsh Society generally has a good turnout. Today there were 15 members (out of 29) and two guests.

I am likely to be kind of busy the next few days. George is in the hospital. He called the ambulance this morning. When I talked to him this afternoon, he said they are keeping him in for a few days for tests. Anyway, I already had the next five or six days blocked out to go feed his cats because he was supposed to have gone up to Mansfield again tomorrow. I postponed Oscar's annual check up until Saturday so I can make sure his critters are okay and try and clean up a bit. I understand he left quite a mess on the bed. The cats like being up there so I need to get the sheets changed and check to see if any of the cat boxes need cleaned yet.

That is about it for now.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, I probably wasn't paying attention if you mentioned your mother being from Wales.  I do remember you saying you were joining the Welsh Society.  While I have been to family places in the US (Wisconsin and Minnesota), I haven't seen much of ancestral places otherwise.  In 2000 I did see where my grandfather and his parents were born in Schleswig-Holstein.  When they lived there, the area was Danish but after the Prussian War the area went to Germany.  And it was Germany when I was there.  I'm glad I was able to see what I saw, after all it was 150 years plus since my ancestors were born.

I hope it was nothing too serious with George, MarsGal, although if he called an ambulance, he certainly thought it was serious.

Patricia, I have a problem when I eat in a nice restaurant, that the menu is too complicated and I am finding it harder to read the menus.  I have to have someone read the small print.  One thing they do, too, is pile so much food on top of other food that I don't know where to start.  I can't say I go to a restaurant with a preconceived idea of what I want, but I'd like to order something without so many sides, all on the plate.  Even a sandwich is built so high I find it hard to get in my mouth!  I may talk a lot, but I do have a small mouth (ask my dentist).

I didn't get to Norway in Genealogy yet as dinner called.  Maybe I'll go now and it's too late for good ship viewing.

GOOD EVENING......

Last night was a terrible night of NO sleep for me, so I will not be here long, but did want to pop in and at least say HELLO!

MARILYNE, nice to read your girls will be coming for a visit. It appears you did not make it back to add more to your posting.  Maybe tomorrow?

PATRICIA, I liked the link you shared.  Very interesting about the brain filtering things out for you.  Love these kind of things.

Nice to see your post, COTTONCANDY.

MARY ANN, I feel like you, I do not care for a lot of different  food items piled on top of each other.  I like my food separated and not covered with sauces for the most part.

MARSGAL, I am sorry to read about George......best of luck getting everything taken care of at his place.

We also got our flu shots today.  They have really been pushing for people to get them right away as the6 expect it to be a bad year for the flu.....

I hope you all had a good day.

I am off to bed and hope it is a much better night of sleep!

Good morning. I got up early (for me) after sleeping most of the night. JENNY, I was awake most of the night before, too. Makes for such a long night.

Mary Ann - They have a very good chicken salad at Sam's Club but it come in too large a container for just me. Chape isn't too keen on it. I find that nothing tastes the same as it used to.

I've become quite good at filtering out things. Chape and I share this office, back to back. He has his computer and television going all the time and watches sports and old westerns a lot. I can sit at my computer and not notice anything going on behind me. If it's too loud I just take out my hearing aid.  :)

Lately I've been doing more scanning of old pictures and also researching on Ancestry.com. My DNA shows 52% France, which didn't surprise me, as well as the British Isles. My mother's ancestors came over from France early on and settled in the Quebec Province of Canada. I have cousins who've traced the family back to when they were in France.  Both maternal grandparents were born in Canada.  My
ancestors on my father's side first came to Massachusetts in the
early 1620s. One of his great-grandmothers came over from Ireland to Nova Scotia and then down to Boston. I enjoy trying to trace different people and the family lines.

Last night was my monthly Triple Play card game. I even came home with $3!  :) This hasn't been a good week for me health-wise but after a good night's sleep I do feel better. Looking forward to a good day!

Donna had her 5th chemo on Monday and texted me that she was quite sick on Tuesday but was feeling a little better yesterday. Three chemo treatments to go.......

Hope you all have a good day.

Mary Ann

Good morning Beverly.  I'm interested in your family genealogy.  Quite a mix.

I hope Donna makes it through the last three chemos without being too sick.

I got up without having my cup of flavored coffee and I'm about to go to the kitchen and heat water for that cup.  I hate to admit it but that gets me through to noon.

It's a dreary day here and I think we have rain across the bottom of the state.  I know it is raining along the St Clair River.  The rain would not stop the ships if there were any scheduled, but there don't seem to be any ships in view.

I'm waiting for Tom to remove my nose bandage and put a bandaid on the surgery.  I think I could do it myself but he offered and I'm going to let him take care of it.  It is nothing gory.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Beverly - Most of my nights are restless and sleepless also.  Last night I had a bad nightmarish dream, right before I woke up, so that started my day out with an unsettled feeling.  The dream is slowly fading away, and I'll be glad when it's gone!

Chape and AJ, like to watch the same things on TV!  AJ goes to the Western Channel, (I think it's called Encore Westerns), when there is nothing else to watch at night.  He also likes college football and his favorite sport is Hockey!  Last night our San Jose Sharks, lost their first game of the season to the dreaded Las Vegas Knights!  >:(    I also have Ancestry, and spent a lot of time building my tree.  It was fun to do the research, but compared to other people, I still have a lot to do.  Ancestry, is constantly changing their format, and this latest one is confusing for me.  I used to like it when I could look at the names of "Distant Cousins", but now they have removed those.  :(   I hope Donna feels better today. Three more Chemo's to go, and then she will be finished.  That means she will be feeling stronger by Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Mary Ann - Like you, the coffee wakes me up, and gets me through the morning with the energy to get most things done around here.  Good that you had no problems with the minor nose surgery, and that Tom is willing to change the bandage.  Remember the last one AJ had removed from his ear? That was one with stitches, and an almost impossible, over the top, bandage for me to change.

Jenny - I'm sorry you had to cancel your trip to see little Jonah, but maybe you can reschedule for some time in November, or maybe even Thanksgiving?  I do remember when you lived on Oregon, and helped Michele and Dave with the new baby.  That was before I started posting here, I think, so I only read the messages here and in Soda Shoppe.  I remember at the time, thinking that you might have been in the same apartment that my parents rented, when my Dad was transferred to Oregon for 18 months in the mid fifties.  It was right on the lake, with a nice view.

Mars Gal - Keep us posted on how George is doing??  Maybe you'll be picking him up at the hospital, when he's released?   I hope his problem was nothing long-term serious, and that he is feeling better today?

It took awhile before he got to it, but Tom finally removed my old bandage and put on a new one.  The area was not gory, but there was more blood than I expected.  I had to wash off the bloody area with a damp tissue then we had to decide whether to put the Vaseline on the area or on the bandaid.  We chose the bandaid, put that on and I'll tell you, I look a lot better than I did with the doctor's bandage.  We'll go back in two weeks for a check up.  The surgery is not painful, nor has it been.

Marilyn, so much of the ancestral info I have was fed to me by other family members - my mother, aunts, dad, grandmother, cousins and I can say I had most of my information before I got on Ancestry.  What amuses me with corrections, someone will put in a hint on my mother.  The hint may be a picture that I posted ages ago, or something about her mother or father, information I would have posted to begin with.  In DNA, i look at the names but so far they've all been 5th to 8th cousins.  I really am not interested in relatives that far from me.  Fourth cousins would descend from my 3rd great-grandparents and I can handle that.  If a 5th cousin plus did contact me, I'd be glad to give them information, maybe even keep in contact, but I do not initiate a contact.
