Only a vague memory of it. But I do remember those big feet (bases). Where I lived they didn't have parties, but on occasion I went to one somewhere else.

Marilyne

YES, Mary Page - I remember the Disney balloons, with the feet!  I have a visual picture in my head of what they looked like, and walking up to one and touching it, pushing it gently, and watching it rock back and forth. I don't remember anything about where I was, but probably at a birthday party?  A faraway, pleasant memory from the distant past.

so_P_bubble

Rammel, in the direction of the log as you explained. The kids were sitting as on a horse, and swinging back and forth. Some were even standing on the log, holding to the poles.

MarsGal

Grrr! Yet another loss of power, briefly, so I lost my post. Guess I am going to have to reset my clocks again.

I remember the balloons with feet but can only conjure up Schmoo from Li'l Abner. Another popular balloon thing was seeing someone making various animals with those long, thin balloons. They were popular at birthday parties and summer festivals.

Oh, and remember the guy who would come around the neighborhood in the summer with his pony to offer picture sessions? And, when the Milkman and the Breadman delivered? Then there was our Mailman. Uncle Harry was not our real uncle but a friend from the war who we kids would follow down the block. He was so great with us kids, so patient and friendly, never got cross with us for following him. I think he enjoyed the company and conversation even if it was just us kids.

It looks like a good morning to finish mowing the backyard. Yesterday, I installed a portable window air conditioner in the window by the computer. It is surprisingly quiet. The air conditioner it replaces is going downstairs to replace an even older air conditioner.

Marilyne

Today is D-Day - The Sixth of June.  An important day, in the timeline of WWII.  Does anyone remember?  I have a vague memory of my teacher, trying to explain the significance of it to the class, using a large colorful pull down map of Europe.  Hope we see some mention of it on the news tonight.  Probably a few good movies playing today, on the channels that feature the oldies, or maybe Amazon or Netflix will play, "Saving Private Ryan"?

MaryPage

I will never forget it.  The war seemed interminable by that time.  We yearned for that day to come, and a sense of gloom had settled in our heads because it had not.

I was at boarding school.  It was graduation day: not for me, I was just finishing my Sophomore year.  But the Seniors were excited, and we were all going home for the summer after the ceremony.  Woo hoo!

In addition to each long table having a faculty member at each end, there was a smaller table for our Headmistress and a few additional faculty members.  Miss Ward stood up from the head of that small table and rang a little bell, which announced she had something to say.  We were really caught completely off guard as to what it was, but the room became silent.

She told us that General Eisenhower had announced on the radio that morning that the invasion of Europe had begun.  We cheered.

And then we felt the tears streaming down our cheeks.  The cheering dropped off, and we cried tears of relief and tears of anxiety for how it must be for our troops.

That war was Our war.  It deeply affected each and every one of us.  No, I will take D-Day June 6th, 1944 with me to my grave.

And I am equally certain that is true of every one of us still surviving.

Missing you all somuch, but now I am caught up again and smiling at your many enjoyable posts💗

We are home from San Francisco.  We were there one week, two days after we arrived our son and DIL left for three days and we enjoyed "doodle" time, then they returned for the remainder of our time together.  It was WONDERFUL being there.  No oxygen needed at all, thanks to he lower altitude.  The day our sn and DIL walked back in the door we had the call we have been waiting on......our new Grandson Leon was born on 6/2/22 at 6:11 MDT.  He weighed 7# 15 oz.

Yesterday we drove to meet the little Leon, and he is as cute as can be. I prayed that he would have BLUE eyes, and he does‼️  They look light enough that we are hopeful they will stay that color. Our oldest grandson has blue eyes....the other grands all have shades of brown to green to gold.....all very pretty, but, I am very pleased to have another blue eyed boy!

Back to physical therapy again today; then to the orthopedic surgeon to hear what he has to say about my CT and MRI'S I had done.  Praying that he has a good plan of what might be able to be done about my hip problem🙏🙏

We have been watching our Avalanche sweep the Oilers......we are off to The Stanley Cup playoffs.  It has been 21 years since we had the last Stanley Cup win and we hope we can do it again🏒🏒

MARILYN, I knew you and AJ were watching and pulling for our Aves in the playoffs!  I wanted the "sweep" however w3 are going to miss watching more matches until the playoffs begin again for us🏒🏒

I need to get ready to head out the door.  Have a great day 🦋🦋

Jenny -  Sounds like you had a great vacation in San Francisco.  I hadn't thought about the fact that it would be easier for you to breathe without your oxygen - thanks to the low altitude.  Maybe you will consider moving to a more comfortable elevation, in the near future?

Congratulations on your newest grandson, Leon!  Sounds like he's just what you ordered, with those blue eyes.  Everyone in our family also has the various shades of blue, green, hazel.  My maternal grandmother had brown eyes, so I always hoped one of my children or grands would inherit them from her, but no such luck.

Yes, looking forward to the Stanley Cup playoffs, and of course we will be rooting for the Avalanche!

Mary Page - Not much mention of D-Day, this year in the news programs.  I guess that's to be expected, being as it was 78 years ago!  Not many of us left to remember and reminisce about the War years.

MaryPage

We had quite a bit of coverage from the network news here, where we are served by our nation's capital.  They showed a number of men in their nineties, like me, who had gone back to visit those thousands upon thousands of white crosses, some of which marked the graves of their dear friends and comrades.  The French are always so welcoming, and they take such good care of those hallowed spots.  They donated the land, in the first place.  I remember so many stories about how elated they were when we finally made it over there.  They said the waters of the English Channel were covered with boats as far as you could see.  It was a grand moment in History, if even a long time of killing such as that one can, or should, be called grand.  We were out to free the countries and people of Europe, and they gave us tremendous support. I wish our studies of that time included newreels from back then, and newspaper and magazine stories.  Old copies of LIFE magazine would have incredible photographs.  What is it they say?: A picture is worth a thousand words.  Sad the Blue Star Mothers who had their stars turn to gold at that time.

A good Wednesday HELLO  🦋🦋

I add a picture of Baby Leon as my avatar.   It is not the best one I have but it was taken shortly after birth and it shows those BLUE eyes‼️

Thank you for all the nice comments welcoming him.

Leon is our 7th grandchild. The oldest, Matt will be 17 in August.  6 boys and one girl🤪🤪 I do not think we will be having anymore, but one never knows.  Our third son and his wife still talk about children, occasionally, but it appears it probably will not happen.  We are very blessed.

I met with the orthopedic surgeon that ordered the CT and MRI'S for me yesterday and now I am going to have some epidural injections in my lower back and a ligament in my groin.  Oh Lordy, I sure hope they will work so I can get moving again.

While we were at the surgeons office, Bob's smart watch went off and the doc saw Bob look at it......he has been having A-FIB since we came home Saturday.  Monday Bob called our internal medicine doc to see if he could get in to have this checked out.  They can not see him until late next week.  My PT suggested we go to the ER and not wait to see our doc.  The surgeon said  "if you were my dad I would tell you to go to the ER.......NO, let me rephrase that, if you were my dad I would take you to the ER.  So off we went to the ER.  HE was indeed in A-FB.  They did blood work, did a ekg to confirm this and started him on meds before sending us home.  This morning he is feeling fine and his smart watch no more A-FIB‼️  We are so glad we went.  The follow up with a cardiologist cannot be done until August 4th!  Good grief.  We have a call in for another office🤷 CRAZY it would be that long!

MARILYN, we did have a wonderful time in San Francisco.  I felt so much better at the lower altitude.  Thank you andAJ for cheering on our Avalanche......can not wait for the match to begin again🏒🏒

Have a good rest of your day.

Loved reading about all the games you played in childhood. Two of my favorites were Dodge Ball and Rover, Rover, both of which are banned now. Also playing Tag which I think has also been banned. When recess came we all headed for the playground out back and it was huge. No teacher supervision, and included the football field. (Our school was 3 stories, grade 1 through high school). The high school was on the third floor. We had swings and a teeter-totter which was behind a knoll and not visible from many of the windows. They would be horrified today at the freedom we had. In winter, we brought pieces of cardboard and linoleum for sliding on the steep hill behind the school. Of course there were areas of concrete for games like Hop-Scotch. When the bell rang, we all made a bee-line for the school.

Michael and Jennifer are here for a few weeks. He has some commitments and has to be back in Vermont at the end of June.

Yesterday was my birthday, so Michael, Jennifer, Donna and Mike took me out to dinner at Carraba's. It's one of my favorite places. We came back here for cake and ice cream and lots of great conversation. The rest of the evening I had several phone calls and went to bed exhausted!

MaryPage - I feel much as you do about D-Day. I was only 6 but I had several uncles overseas and seeing family reactions made a big impression. Fortunately, only one was wounded and they all came back alive.

Jenny - Congratulations on little Leon! And to think I can remember when you wondered if you'd ever have grand-children!  :)

Shirley

I love this place and the fact when the rest of the world forgets the important times of OUR lives, we talk about those times and how each of us remember. My oldest brother was in a German prison camp (found out later he was being marched to stay away from the allies trying to release them), and next oldest brother on a ship "somewhere over there". I was 6 when the war started and 10 when over, and fully aware of what was going on. There was a SAC base 20 miles from where we lived so we were told our area could be a target for bombers or terrorists or spies.

Beverly, our grade school was 1-7, and 7 schools dumped into the high school which was 8 thru Senior years. It also was 3 stories high, grade schools only 2 stories high and the playground was gravel. We created our hopscotch playground by dragging our heels in the gravel to groove the pattern deep. Belated Happy Birthday!

We have had power loss a couple times this week, hate having to reset all those clocks. Also the city had a problem with the water system due to some kind of power glitch, so boil water for a couple days.  And we really think we'll have enough to charge all those cars???  Right now I'm going crazy with charging cameras, phones, Fitbit, iPads & all the yard equipment from weed whips to new mower, blowers & hedge clippers, etc. Need to get to bed, don't want to think about the changes lately.

Beverly  -  Happy Birthday :party2: - one day late!   Sounds like you had a nice birthday dinner with family, at your favorite restaurant.   I also remember when Jenny was hoping so much for a grandchild, and was so thrilled when Matthew arrived!

Jenny -  Your count is now higher than ours, when it comes to grandchildren!  We only have six . . . four girls and two boys.  Your new profile picture of  Baby Blue Eyes, is adorable.  I'm looking forward to seeing lots more photos of Leon, posted soon in Photos Old and New.    It's sure good that Bob took your doctors advice and went to the ER for his A-Fib!

Hi Shirley - Looks like we were posting at the same time!

MaryPage

Beverly, how blessed you & I were.  Every eligible adult in my family joined up.  Every one came home. Daddy suffered what I guess WWI called shell shock and WWII probably the same.  I don't know, but he suffered nightmares for some time.  Just after the war with Japan ended, he was in the first train to travel to see Nagasaki.  He never got over that, but as you do with grief, it got wrapped in cotton batting within him eventually.  You never really "get over" a thing that tears you apart.

With all the horrors committed against our children these days, I expect the over protection may be necessary.  However, every thing in life has a trade off.  We were free range kids left to resolve our own problems because it taught us responsibility.  Seriously.  Think about it.Hey, Happy Birthday to You, Beverly!

My elementary school had two stories, for 1st through 7th grades.  Virginia had no 8th grade in those days.  Just a few steps over, on the same property, was our one story High School.  During WWII they built a home cannery for Valley housewives to use for the produce from their gardens.  You were probably too young to be aware, but everything was scarce during that war.

And yes, Dear Jenny: congratulations ARE in order for your new blue-eyed grandchild.  I have 5 children with blue eyes, two with hazel, and one with chocolate.  I still think of her that way: My Annie with the chocolate eyes.  They are so beautiful.

I have too many grandchildren, and waaaay too many great grandchildren, to figure out the eye colors.

Just dropped by to check out the latest posts.

Happy Belated Birthday, Beverly!

Jenny, congratulations to you and your family for the newest addition to your family.

I am slowly clearing things out of my kitchen in preparation for a complete remodel. It is a real challenge to find places to put things where they will be out of the way or pitched out because I haven't used them in years.

The pre-dawn sky this month should be fun. There is an alignment of seven planets, two of which can only be seen by telescope. The planets will be lined up in order of their distance from the sun this time. The 24th is supposed to be the best alignment. This morning I only saw Venus because I didn't get up early enough to try and spot the others.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78crD1l1sCA

Good afternoon.

I, too, remember oh so well wanting a grandchild so bad, MARILYN.  LITTLE did I know what our Good Lord had in store for me🥰🥰. I am hoping to get Bubble to post some pictures for me very soon. I love looking at the other little ones, animals, etc.  Love them all🥰🥰

BEVERLY, I believe I wished you a happy on FBook, but here is another one....  Glad you enjoyed your day🥰

MARYPAGE, I have a couple of ANNIE eyed chocolate grands also🥰🥰

MARSGAL, I do not envy you getting things packed up for the remodel.  We need to do the same thing, and I dread doing it!  Thank you for sharing the info on the planets lineup.

Have a good weekend.   We will be going to Granddaughter Kate's dance recital tomorrow.  It is in a professional theater.  They will do three different shows.  We chose mid-day as it was to include her solo.  $36. a ticket.  Yesterday the schedule came out and her dance is in the third one😩😩.  Nothing we can do about it other than buy another ticket in the 3rd show each😩

Good to see you name pop up, JACKIE‼️  I think of you often and hope you are do8ng well.

Oh, Gosh, Jenny!  I hope the ticket seller will sympathize with your difficulty and swap the tickets at no extra expense!

I got so tickled about your recital going.  I remember SO many recitals in the past: my own little girls, my granddaughters, and my great grands.  This day here on the bay will see family meeting in a hall here to see six year-old Ava in her dance recital.  It should be a hoot, as it is that stage of little girls being stunned into complete  lack of movement while their eyes search the vast sea of people staring at them.

When Becky was three, and dressed in an adorable costume of black and pink striped satin with matching bonnet, she suddenly stopped and squatted down in center front, waved a joyful hand towards my seat and called out Loud & Clear: "Hi, Mommy!"

We have told and retold that story for years now.  Becky is recently retired from teaching Elementary School.  I no longer appear at the recitals, but they send me videos from their Smart Phones.  What Joy!

I have one great granddaughter in Oklahoma City who actually has talent.  Kiersten is 15 now, and granddaughter Kim refreshes my Skylighter photo gallery constantly with images of her amazing leaps and other choreography.  What a world we live in, being able to keep up while never leaving our comfy nests.

I'd rather be able to hug each and every one of them, though.

But happiness dwells in the heart, and mine is full.

MaryPage

Well, Ava's recital has come & gone.  I await a call from my daughter Debi gushing about her granddaughter shining like a star amidst the other little ones.  My granddaughter Kathryn has already sent me a photo of a triumphant Ava in her outfit holding the bunch of flowers her grandparents had taken to be presented to her with the ending applause.  Is there EVER any more sincere and totally into it applause for ANY type of performance as there is in one attended by mostly grandparents?

I say there is not.

I was tickled to find Ava wore pink and black, just as Anne & Becky did more than sixty years ago!  Ava's dance attire consisted of a pink see-through top that had a circle of black trim around the round neck.  The main material looked to be pink gauze.  The full gathered skirt was of some black material that had stripes made up of many different colors of dots.  Under this skirt was a pink net tutu.  She wore white leggings with this, and white ballet shoes.

Marilyne

Mary Page -  Ava must have looked absolutely adorable, and definitely did the whole family proud!    I remember those long ago days when my two girls were involved in ballet and tap dancing!  My youngest daughter was the most enthusiastic, and loved being onstage, in those colorful fancy outfits.

I still have one of her costumes and a pair of tap shoes, packed away in her "Memory Box", which is filled with other items like favorite dress, a few Barbie dolls, roller skates, report cards, letters and prom pictures, etc.      Older daughters Box, contains  ballet shoes, but mostly items pertaining to her years as a majorette with the high school band.  The batons, the outfits, the boots.

Number one, and only son, doesn't have as much in his box!   Boys don't tend to be sentimental, and save personal items, like girls do.  The only thing of interest in his box, is the old, "Casper the Friendly Ghost", with the talking pull string in his back, that I mentioned here in this discussion a few weeks ago.

MaryPage

Debi's call came, and I had an earful of how fabulous Ava and her little group were.  Then she gave me a rundown on the even cuter, not as well rehearsed younger set, and I feel relieved to know there is no change there from when I was young.  At least something remains the same!

She described the deer-in-the-headlamp one who never moved during the whole routine and the one who never moved in the correct direction, but wound up doing a little number all her very own!

Here's to Little Girls and their dancing lessons!

MaryPage

Our morning newspaper has a headline with a brand new word they appear to have coined.  Either that, or I am really behind with my vocabulary.

Shrinkflation.

Which this software does not want to accept, but must.  For I agree with The Capital, and have been thinking A LOT about the phenomena this word describes in the past few months.  Not only that, but I have seen the very same thing in other times during  my budgeting years.

It refers to package sizes shrinking without lowering prices.

They report it covers pretty much everything: from Kleenex to yogurt, coffee, corn chips, toilet paper, shampoos, conditioners, chicken wings, and you-name-it.  What's more, it's going on worldwide.

I've certainly been noticing.  How 'bout you?

All I know is that I go shopping and my weekly bill
continues to go up and up...  And I have noticed that
the prices are getting higher while the portions
are getting smaller.

Covid seems to be getting better,  with all our
shots, mask wearing and hand washing.. we
elders seem to be hanging in there.  (Phew)

Meanwhile machine guns are selling faster
and holding more rounds...  so that they
can destroy anything that they hit, including
our bodies.

Plus our x president is getting ready to
beat  another rap.

Unless, of course they RICO his nasty butt
into prison! (Fingers crossed)

(I can always hope!)

Have a good weekend everyone.

I do not believe Covid is done with us yet, Sandy Love.  I think it has all kinds of nasty tricks up its sleeve.

I am feeling a smile about to break out inside of me now.  It is very tentative still, but one can but hope a tide is turning out there in the world I will visit no more, forever.

As for those guns that were invented to be used by our military and our law enforcement, if you missed the segment on 60 Minutes a week or two ago in which a Science lab conducted a most unnerving experiment, try to find it on On Demand.

They had created a yellow or amber (I have yet to identify the color, as I am not an artist) gel that very closely resembles human flesh.  Not to your eyes, but to its qualities. They put a very large, about adult human sized slab or rectangle (again, take your pick of descriptions) up on a table and shot a hand gun into it.

They declared the "person" dead.  The slab was damaged, but not by a whole lot.

Then they shot an AK15 into a new slab they placed on the table.  No question but what that "person" was dead.  And torn apart.  In pieces.

No wonder we heard on the television that some of those ten (10!) year-olds had their heads shot off.

Hunters think it unsporting to use them to kill deer.  Yet it is okay to sell them to kids to kill kids.  I cannot connect the dots here.

But what do I know?  There is much about the lives and doings of our species that I find passing strange.  That is one reason I am content being alone with my books.  I do miss my husband, and will forevermore.  I relish the phone calls from my children and their children and their children.  But I keep my distance from the bulk of humanity.  Except for the news.  I confess to being a news junkie, but that fits with my love of History.

I'm another that doesn't believe things are going right this year & last. Personally I'd rather MY family be able to own the same weapons the bad guys use. I have a conceal carry permit and think that is something everyone should have to have before owning a gun. BUT, I don't expect any of the would be killers would bother with taking that much time out of their day/week. So why are the attack rifles being made? You think it might have something to do with lobbiests & politicians that do get a paycheck on the side that allow the factories to keep producing?

I sure don't think anyone should be able to buy a gun, hunting knife or car (all can kill) without being checked out first, without a permit, proof of insurance and libility. How about proof of enough money to take care of a child before having one?  Money in the bank? Why expect the rest of the world to feed & educate a child when the 2 people that created it don't seem to be responsible?  We would not have a problem if everyone did their share.

If everyone that had a hand out to help raise their children had to put in 8 hours labor for each one's care, they wouldn't have enough hours to make more babies after 3. Labor camps?  The rest of the taxpayers might appreciate not being slaves, less than 50% pay the taxes now, I hear. Does anyone think about the millions paid in all kind of fees to try to nail Trump for Jan.6?  Sure it was stupid for anyone to trash the Whitehouse. Is that the only thing any politician or citizen has done that is STUPID? How wild & crazy is the looting of stores when some group protests? Really? And that is okay?

My kids had to work for whatever they got, including college, guns & cars. Mine also took the gun safety classes as teens plus earn top grades if they wanted to drive. They had jobs to pay for their own car insurance & gas and held responsible for anything they did or didn't do. Most of all they grew up with compassion, every one of them has the means to help strangers in need, and they do.

Anyone thinks this is a "political" post, think again, I am as critical of each of the main parties and think they should all be limited to a 4 year hitch and that every government employee (including military) should be held responsible for what ever job they get paid for. After each "tour of duty" there should be an assessment of how well the last 4 years went, honest, non-political review (can that be?). We need a plan, not just whining.  This may not be the place to discuss "politics" but I'm just trying to balance what has already been posted and I will take offence if MY post is pulled out and not the others.

Covid & Mr. Poo Tin's war. These 2 things are affecting these matters all over the world.  None of us will be exempt from their effects until, if ever, Covid is finally cured and the war is finally over.  Let us all hope for a Ukraine when that comes about.

Then, of course, Climate Change will have to be dealt with.  It will really be throwing everything into scarcity and thus driving prices up still further.  One thing leads to another, and everything has its causes.

Some of the world is going to suffer death from starvation due to the loss of grain from Ukraine.  That will increase by enormous numbers now that so much land that could once produce crops is no longer able to do so.  Many countries are already feeling this dreadful situation, and that makes for one big reason why their citizens want to come here: so that they may feed their children.  One day we may have to collect all of these AK15s and set up a few thousand miles of shooters along our boarders in hopes of keeping what crops we may be able to grow to feed our own children.  Seriously.  I do not research this on my own.  I do not have expertise in these matters.  I read the works of the experts, and I find that everything I have read so far, re their explanations of what we can expect and how these things came to be, have proven true.  We did not have anything like the storms we have today back when I was young.  But I read these storms could be expected, along with great fires and plagues and all manner of things that might well exterminate our species.

So far, the predictions of the Scientists have been right on.  Except for one thing: they are now telling us it is all unfolding at a much greater pace than first they figured.

So sad.  I suffer great angst thinking of my adorable great grandchildren.  As for myself, I will be long checked out from this life.

MarsGal

So true MaryPage. And now, not surprisingly, I read that Putin plans on withholding it agricultural products from those supporting Ukraine. And, another new development just across my eyes Nicaragua has signed an agreement with Russia to "provide Russian troops for and in Nicaragua". This from an article in The Hill.

https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/3519926-with-russian-forces-set-to-enter-central-america-how-will-the-us-respond/

I fear things are not going to get better any time soon. It appears the world is set for another major shift. Sorry about the morning doom and gloom.
