Tome, you didn't mention me but I haven't posted in a while...mainly because I really don't have anything to add to the topics that I think would be interesting.

Civil War:  My ancestors at that time were from Iowa and, although I have extensive genealogy information about them, the only thing I can connect was that a great great uncle was part of a local Unit of some kind that wasn't ever called into service.
My grandmother was born in 1860 and I have the ceramic hen-on-a-nest that was given to her for Easter in 1865. (As I understand it, the Civil War ended that Good Friday.

Pearl Harbor: I was trying to survive First Grade when Pearl Harbor happened and no one in my immediate family was directly involved in the military.  We lived on an acreage with milk cows and chickens.  The pasture was leased to a man who "paid" the rent with a side of beef each year.  Other than sugar, rationing didn't really affect us.  My mother won a prize from the newspaper by submitting a recipe for Molasses Sponge Jelly Roll that was sweetened by pure cane sorghum molasses (ground from sorghum cane by our molasses mill; I can still picture the mule going around in circles to make the grinder work and dipping my finger into the syrup that was draining down a trough into a kettle where it was cooked into the thick molasses).

I did visit Pearl Harbor several years ago while on a tour of Hawaii. I stood on a street in the city and tried to picture what the average person living there would have thought when they saw Japanese planes coming over and heard bombs dropping into the harbor. Since there were no tv or cell phones, etc. back then, they would have had no way of instantly knowing what was happening.  That must have been way beyond scary!

My area wasn't affected by the horrible storms that swept clear across the state on Sunday night - although we did lose power for almost 2 hours.  However, one of the damaging tornadoes literally skipped over my son's house.  They were in the storm cellar but could hear the roar and the terrible wind.  Fortunately, their house wasn't damaged.

The weather has been sunny and warm since then (I was able to keep the patio door open all yesterday afternoon) but it's begun to turn colder today and we "may" get more storms tomorrow night.

And that's what's going on in my world.  :smitten:

MarsGal

There hasn't been much going on here, well not worth mentioning anyway. I took my sister to Red Lobster for her birthday on Sunday.

Spent some time over two days this past week actually pulling up some very tall privet bushes. Surprisingly, they came up easily after the rains we had. Their roots, it turns out, were very shallow. If I had known that I would have pulled them several years ago. There are still a few to get rid of, a bunch at the bottom of the yard and one at the top. They are likely to be harder to deal with. If so, I may just try to keep them severely trimmed back. The darn things grow fast. Now that I have some room to maneuver, I think I can manage. Now that the neighbor next door put in privacy fencing, I can use the space I cleared for smaller plants. It will make mowing the yard and keeping weeds back along that side a lot easier. Now all I have to do is find someone to haul the brush away. There is a lot of it.

Good to see so many new messages here. :)  There was a lull for a few days, but hoping that those who post here, will always return.
Thank you Tomereader, for giving us a reminder!

Callie -  Interesting antidote  about your grandmother, born at the beginning of the Civil War. I would love to see your vintage ceramic hen-on-a nest!  I didn't realize they were produced that long ago.  My mother had a small collection, and I have only one left of hers.  It's in the green Jadite.
Your storm  on Sunday, sounds like a scary one.  So much wild weather happening across the country in the past month, that I lose track.  We've had more than our share in California  this year. My oldest daughter lives near Yosemite, and was "snowed in" all this week.  something we aren't prepared for here in CA.

MarsGal -  Your weather must be mild in comparison?   Being able to work outside in the yard is usually a sign of Spring?  I know things can change quickly this time of year, so I'm hoping we soon get a break here from the cold.

Sandy -  Your last message was hanging out there for a long time, with no responses. Don't you hate it when that happens? :-[   I was interested in reading about your  daughter and family, planning a trip to Turkey, to attend a wedding, and then to see the country.   The devastation from the earthquakes is so bad, that I can't imagine it could be cleaned up for a long long time.  Of course most  other areas in Turkey that were unaffected, so probably still welcoming tourists.

Hope we hear from others today . . . or soon!

Come to find out Kelly will be going to Istanbul
(which use to be called Constantinople on the European side
which is quite  a ways  from the area of the earth quakes,
so their actual plans on how long are still up
in the air.     We never know just how Mother Nature
is going to turn on us from one day  to the next.

I hope that all goes well,  naturally ,  but
will be on edge  until they get home again.

All is well here, except for the predicted snow
coming Saturday ...  My groceries are all in
so I am all set until next week ..

Have a good weekend,  everyone.

Another weekend is almost here!  Remember the old days, when we usually had something to look forward to every weekend?  A day trip to the beach, a movie, a family picnic or a neighborhood barbecue.  Sometimes a birthday party or just having friends over on Saturday night for dinner.  Those days are long gone, but it's fun to remember.

Hoping we hear from some of our regular Bait and Tackler's today?  It's been a while since we've heard from Mary Page?   Also, Beverly and Jenny?  Jenny must be home from her Hawaii cruise by now?

Mary Page - Bring us up to date on how you're feeling, and any news happening with your great grand's?
Tome, I remember when you told us about your love of football.  Now wondering if you are following basketball or hockey, or maybe looking forward to baseball season?
Callie, hope your storms and tornadoes have stopped, and you can all relax in Oklahoma?  You always have the upcoming wedding to look forward to.
Sandy, keep us posted on what's going on in your corner of the world, and when your daughter and family will be leaving for Turkey?  Beverly, we're always looking forward to seeing new pictures of your great-grands . . . the twins and Keani.
MarsGal, I think you're the busiest one in B&T?  Always working in your yard, (weather permitting), or enjoying a dinner out with your sister.
Jackie,  we haven't heard from you in a long time.  Bring us up to date on how you're feeling, and what you're doing,  or what you're watching on TV?
Rick, we also haven't seen any post here  from you in a long time?   Hope all is well in your world?

RAMMEL

Well --- The sun is shining and no snow coming down, so I guess all's well. I've been busy as a sloth and getting things done as fast.
Later I may put some paint on the wall and then watch it drying. ------------- So much fun.  And you?

Hey, there Marilyne.  In reference to the sports.  When March Madness comes along, I will watch some of the games if my local college teams are playing, i.e., Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas, SMU, TCU; that applies to both the men's teams and women's teams.  If a local Women's team does not make the semi's or final, I will be cheering for UConn, and don't ask me why, as my hubby and I just loved the way they played, and their team spirit.  I would never have thought he would have been interested in the Women's basketball, but he really was a fan.  I might watch some Golf, if my favorite players are doing well in the tournaments.  I don't watch much baseball, until World Series comes along.  I will just be bingeing along on TV with my British Mystery shows. Regular TV has very few programs that I follow. Used to be NCIS, but when "Jethro" left, I lost interest. I like the FBI series, at least 2 of them, but they are getting so predictable, I don't always watch.  I DVR and then when I play it back, if the story is not interesting or is too far-fetched, I erase it.  I always watch or DVR programs on PBS; Masterpiece etc. Of course I have Netfix and Amazon Prime, so I don't lack for entertainment! Lately I have been doing a lot of reading, even more than usual!  Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything to recommend.  One book I checked out sounded like it would be a great read, but it was so filled with foreign names and foreign language (which they didn't translate) I took it back to the library less than 50 pages in.  One library branch is having a book sale tomorrow, but I am withstanding the temptation!  I have many, many books of my own that I need to get started on. (Not near as many as MaryPage has).  That's about all the interesting miscellaneous stuff. I will say,if I didn't in an earlier post, my daughter had the flu, about a month ago.  The Tele-Doc didn't tell her to come in for a Chest Xray after the meds were done, so lo, and behold, she got pneumonia to go along with the remnants of the flu. Had to go to an UrgentCare very late one evening.  She is recuperating, and is only now just back to work. So, there's my exciting life in half a page. Stay Safe, make the most of our allotted times.

I have been in hospital again.
Same exact thing as last November: water around the heart.  I have Congestive Heart Failure.  Well, now I'm home.

I ran into some sort of SeniorNet membership card yesterday, and it said I became a member in 1999 and it was good until 2009.  Do I have to pay something?

Ah, the Great Grands!  The things that tickle my Life!  I no longer see them, except in computer pictures and on my Skylight, but Oh, the tales!  Now Solo is a 2nd grader.  He does not want to study, do homework, or do any work at all.  But his school (a gifted & talented one) had Chess contests throughout the school last week.  Solo came in FIRST in his class!  Mateo, his 4th grade brother and my favorite, came in 3rd in his!  Amazing, these kids!

Solo's paternal grandfather was named Solomon, so Judith, my granddaughter, was delighted to name him that and call him Solo.
This gave her the excuse to make his middle name Han.  Yes, Judith is, as am I (but not so enthusiastically) a Star Wars fan!

Great Grand Sam had a four year scholarship to his college.
Last week one of his compositions was played publicly by an orchestra (he has finished college now).  It was very well received and they sent me a video.

Isn't it amazing how we can keep up with our darlings in this modern age!

We have pretty much missed Winter here on the Chesapeake.  Spring is coming.  I know because the crocus and daffodils are blooming their heads off and the yardmen have mulched all the gardens, trees and bushes.

Marilyne

Mary Page,  so sorry that you have recently been hospitalized for congestive heart failure.  Hoping that you're feeling better, and that the problem has been taken care of for now.

I enjoyed hearing about Solo and Mateo, and the chess contests. Their names are certainly unique, which is the fashion now for parents in that generation.  A far cry from the names our parents chose for us, or that  we chose for our children . . . which were mostly the trendy/popular names of the time, that now sound old and dated.  I guess that pretty much describes us too . . . old and dated!  ::)

Joanne (Tome) -  Pro Basketball and Hockey season run concurrently, but B-Ball is by far the most popular here.  Hockey gets kicked to the curb, and virtually ignored in Northern Cal by the majority of sports fans.  Basketball rules, but not here in this house.  We remain loyal to our favorite  - the San Jose Sharks!   :cheer:   Doing poorly in recent years, but always hope for the future.     Women's basketball is big  here, because of the consistently winning Stanford team.  We rarely ever watch a game, except during playoffs.

So sorry your daughter had a bout with pneumonia, after he long siege with the flu.  Hope she continues to improve, and you can start getting together again when Spring finally arrives.  (which is predicted to be late this year).  :P

Rick -   Here's hoping your paint has finally dried, so you can move on to something that doesn't take so much energy?  ::)   Maybe taking an extra nap is on tap for today? 🤔     Here's hoping the sun continues to shine, and the snow has melted?

Good morning all!  :hello:
Hoping the new week is looking like a good one, for everyone?   We're still complaining about the ongoing Winter weather, here in California.  Expecting cold rain and hail today and tonight, with snow falling again in the higher elevations.  Older daughter and granddaughter live in a town outside of Yosemite, and have been snowed in for the past couple of days.  Fortunately they have underground utilities, so have not lost power.

This will be another stay-at-home day for me, so I'm planning to start reading a new library book, and finding something good to watch on TV.  Yesterday I found a movie I wanted to see, but no closed captions!  That's a  must for me now.   Instead,  I watched a rerun of "Les Mis" on my local PBS channel. (Pledge Week)  It's one of my favorite musicals, and this was a good live version that I had never seen before, and really enjoyed.

MarsGal

I just have to share my wonderful morning with you all.

1. My newest e-reader, which I have had for a year or less and haven't used much, seemed to have died. It gave me a false battery reading at first then when I went to charge it, it refused to charge. Previous to that it refused to turn a page on a freebie short I was reading. I thought at first it was a bad download. Since Sue and I were going out to breakfast, I re-set the thing on charge, still no indication it was going to charge, then left. When I came back, just 15 minutes ago, it appeared to have decided to charge. Thank goodness that problem resolved itself.

2. I was going to drive today, but the car would not start. Not even an indication it tried. Dashboard lights on all over the place, so Sue drove. On the way to the restaurant, we stopped at my local garage. It will take a few days before Josh can get to it, but when he does get time, he will be down with a charger. If he can get it charged, he will take it up to the garage and run diagnostics. Otherwise, I am looking at a tow trip to Bobby Rahal. My car is a hybrid, so there are two batteries. One is the regular 12volt and the other is the big lithium battery (last I priced a new lithium battery it was priced at $3,000 and that was at least five years ago.

3. We went to Wegman's Grocery after breakfast. They take the card I have that is supposed to be loaded with $60.00 for groceries. It was rejected. Now I am going to have to call them - again. I was told that it was loaded onto the card, but I still cannot get into the website. They are supposedly having problems, but guess what, they have been having problems since the beginning of the year. At least the prescription part of it works.

I could use a drink.  :drink:  So, off I go to get me a nice big glass of iced tea.

Oh, BTW, Sue tripped on the way out to the car this morning and ended up whacking her chin on her car on the way down. Fortunately, she is okay.

Hi Marilyne

MaryPage

Good grief, MARSGAL!  Wish I had a magic potion for you.  Well, the cloud of bad news will only hang over any one of us for as much or many as three issues, and then it has to seek other victims.  I expect your presemt run is over and your pocketbook will be recovering soonish.

My chief complaint of many small ones this a.m. has been a runny nose.  Running like a rushing river in full flow.  The boxes of Kleenex hopping from box to nose to waste basket are HUGE, but have no fear:  I lack a disease or infection.  It is totally a matter of allergies.  Gotta blow!

MarsGal

Thar she blows! Hope your nose clears soon and it doesn't get sore, MaryPage. Mine usually only give me trouble first thing in the morning.

It is a good thing I am in a good mood. I'm sun powered today. The insurance thing is resolved, mostly. I couldn't use my food benefits yet because my insurance co still needs to confirm to the benefits handler. However, I am still not able to get into the benefits website.

Looks like Shan wants some attention and it is soon time to think about dinner. Catch ya'all later.

Winter continues on, with a vengeance.   Expecting another big storm tomorrow.  The meteorologists are constantly coming up with new terms/names for storms here in California.   The one tomorrow is now called an  "Atmospheric River" . . .  a surge of heavy warm rain coming from the direction of Hawaii.  We've always referred to those fast moving tropical storms as "The Pineapple Express", but the weather people, ditched that old worn out name this year, for the newer,  more scientific sounding one.  ::)  Whatever it's called, it's going to be a biggie.

Mary Page - I've been thinking about you, and hoping that you're feeling better since your recent hospitalization visit?  Also, that your allergy attack has subsided?  I get those too . . .  an all day siege of sneezing and nose blowing.   It's exhausting, but usually only lasts for one day.   Our neighborhood is filled with blossoming trees of all kinds, so easy to see why everyone is suffering.

MarsGal - Hope your life has settled down, and that you now have your car back, and all other issues have been resolved?  Glad you have your sister living close, so she can help you out when needed.
I liked your selection this morning in the classical music folder!

AS always, hoping we hear from others who post here in B&T.

This "up and down" weather that's crossed the entire state of Oklahoma for the past several weeks has aggravated my "squeaks and creaks" to the point that it's making me feel very cranky  >:(.  Trees are blooming and various pollens are high which makes me  :tissue:

So I think it's best if I  :-X lest I say something "snarky" and alienate Everyfriend.  :smitten:

Marilyne

Callie - go ahead and say something "snarky"!       We're all in a cranky weather mood about now, and we need to vent!   :tickedoff:

Rick - Yes, I'm sure that even the latest weather term, has to be closely monitored, to be sure no one could possibly be offended!  So far, our icy cold storms that originate in the Gulf of Alaska, have not been given a specific name?   I'm sure the weather people are trying to come up with something clever, but it must be difficult to sidestep the PC Police!  >:(

MarsGal

No such luck, Marilyne. My garageman is hoping to come over (he is about five blocks up the street) tomorrow afternoon with his battery charger to see if he can get it started. If so, he will take it up to the garage and do diagnostics. If it is the big battery, that will mean a tow to Bobby Rahal. Of course, it could be something else entirely. The darn panel lights up like a Christmas tree including what I call the "don't panic" button. That is the big yellow triangle, solid on, not blinking, where the manual says to "stay calm", get the car off the road ASAP.

It seems that a rash of problems have hit the area lately. Yesterday, the garageman told me the motor on one of his two lifts died, so he was trying to locate a replacement. A friend of my sister had open heart surgery today. They replaced a valve, got rid of an artery blockage, and did something else (I forget what). She was under for five or six hours. I managed to damage the thumbdrive which hold my financial stuff. Fortunately, even though the plastic case came apart and the rest got bent slightly, I was still able to plug it in and transfer all my info to a new thumbdrive. Amazing. I thought for sure the circuit board connection would have been damaged, but no. Lucky me. Forgot to mention that several nights ago the gas company was out doing an emergency repair to a neighbor's pipeline to the house. They blocked off the road for a while to get it dug up. They were there from around 7pm to sometime past 3am.

We are supposed to get some rain and snow the next two days. Temps in the thirties to mid-forties.

Well, that is the excitement for the last few days.

RAMMEL

MarsGal, - Those Thumb Drives are pretty tough. I left one in my pocket when I put my dungarees in the wash.  I thought it would be dead so I opened it up and used canned air to blow it out. It looked OK so I plugged it in and it worked just fine. But I don't think I'll make a practice of doing that.
