Patricia, I read your post on the Australian skate boarder. Amazing !

MaryPage. I agree with you on the Common room being taken over by a locked in group. Each floor here has what is called the Lobby, and it is used by a goup of residents...like when they have a weekly writing class, but it is open to all. It t also has a refrigerator for residents to use, but they have to be sure and add their name and mark the date. Very handy indeed. I entertain family in my apt. but if I were to have a large goup, I am able to use the lobby for visiting...but still open to all.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

angelface555

June, we have a similar situation here in that each floor, (five levels); has a social room with puzzles, TV, and computers that are in use by floor residents and for each floor's board meetings. They have no kitchen facilities.

On the main floor, besides the smaller social room, there is a very large room set up with several tables and a kitchen room opening off to the front. This kitchen is kept locked other than when used by a committee because food tends to disappear.

The room houses meals, affairs, demos and other activities as well as the building committee that represents everyone besides each separate floor's committee. There are coffee and homemade goodies set out twice daily by one of the hospitality committee. This place is run by committee!   ::)

On the second floor is an activities director who is paid by management to coordinate everything as well as helping residents with paperwork and other items. On the first floor is the apartment manager's office, the security whose office also has a 24/7 mailroom & package pickup and a maintenance position. We have security and maintenance 24/7. There are no locks as everything opens by key fobs. Our apartment doors and mailboxes are somehow coded to our key fobs similar to a car's key fob. The manager, maintenance, and security all have their own encompassing key fobs.

Hi everyone.  I got off to an early start today as got up about 5:30 this morning.  I had gone to bed early as was feeling very weary and had a good 8 hours or more of sleep.  Today should be a pretty light day with just the dinner at church this evening and then our weekly visiting with our son afterwards.

The Adult Fellowship at the Church yesterday was most enjoyable and there was a very nice crowd to enjoy the singing group that provided our program.  The group's director was very outgoing and they sang a series of the old secular songs that I used to play all the time as I was growing up and then a sacred set of the choruses of the old familiar hymns.  The attendees were invited to sign along.  The musical group is made up of older folks who just enjoy singing and from several different churches.  I didn't bring the devotional as had forgotten that I was just on standby as someone had called the coordinator indicating they would like to do a particular devotional.  This was a 1982 piece published in the Guideposts Magazine written by a former pastor of our church, who is long retired, and he and his wife attend our church now and were at the Fellowship yesterday.

A friend came over to visit with Pat yesterday afternoon bringing a homemade pie to bake and a big container of cut up fruit.  I will bake the pie this morning and we will enjoy the fruit for a day or so as it will go quickly.

MaryPage, thanks for the further explanation regarding the locked common room and the attendees for the religious ceremonies.

Patricia, what is stone soup?  It is nice that the common room gets lots of use.  The one where Stacey lived did not appear to get much use and we would go down to it and have our lunch with her as she didn't have a dining table and she could get her wheelchair under the table.  It was a very large room with a very nice kitchen and separate ice machine.  I haven't heard about having a fob to replace all of the keys including the mailbox.  That sounds like a wonderful idea.

angelface555

Larry, a quick overview of the story of stone soup.

http://stonesoup.com/about-the-childrens-art-foundation-and-stone-soup-magazine/history-of-the-stone-soup-story-from-1720-to-now/

Basically, it is a soup made out of leftovers or when you're cleaning out the fridge or simply when you're at a loss about what to make for supper and throw in all that looks good. I'm sure that the version we will have today will be very good.

Yes, that room gets so much usage, it is a real neighborhood center and the chance for many who cannot or do not wish to, travel outside the building.

Angel I had a friend from Australia who had been a cook at a lumberjack camp at one time in his life.  He made a stew as you described.  Whatever he came across was what went in the stew.  He was visiting his niece in Texas when I discovered him cooking one of these stews and when I saw him cut an apple up and put it in the stew I made a comment.  He just laughed and kept on acookin......

His story about how became a cook is quite a tale, but to long to put here.

angelface555

Hal, that sounds good to me and is the way I cook. I don't measure except by eye unless it's a very new recipe and I'm notorious for slipping odd things into my cooking. It's how I learned that certain salad dressings and coffee syrups are good for chicken as a lightly brushed on marinade, tastes great, especially hazelnut or raspberry chicken!

It's a dreary gray day out there with plenty of rain but not a snowflake in sight,

JeanneP

I just went and got my Flu Shot. Asked about the one for Pneumonia they seen  to be pushing, but told me unless you know when you took the first one after the age of 65. If you got one then don't take this new one.  Another thing, I don't know if they know what they are doing. Don't know when I took mine but know after 65. Saying you can't mix them. So I will forget about the new one.

Gotten so cold here today. below 60s.  I am wearing a jacket. Say will be back up to 80 over the weekend.  Lots of people catch a cold this weather.
Need to get my service over to check out my furnace. Looks like may need it soon. Need to pick up filters.
Think I need to change my keyboard. Wearing out. Hate to as I love this one with the large keys. But has to be 6 years old. I have a new Wireless KB And mouse . Need to put it on. Had it over a year. Never used them before.
Starting to rain and so I am in for the night

Larry.  I was sort of like you yesterday. Felt sleepy.  All I did was go to Dr. I had my yearly full Blood panel done a week ago so he read it and did a check up. Says was perfect. I know I need to loose a few pounds but he say with a check up like this you are fine. All had gone down other than weight. It had done 5 lbs only.
So went to bed about 8:45 pm and woke up at 4pm. went back to sleep and woke up at 7:30.  Been having a little nap  some days lately  but not yesterday so maybe that the reason. Felt good.

If you have diabetes, have gallstones or heart problems among others, please read this about eating ginger. Ginger is in some baked items, many oriental foods, and other surprising areas. It is dangerous, similar to grapefruit. For example, if you are taking blood thinners or anticlotting medicines, it could have an adverse effect.

I taught school for 26 years in lots of different states because of being a Navy wife who had to move to new duty stations about every 2 years.  When I taught first, second or third grades, one of the favorite stories was Stone Soup, so I sent notes home with each child about their contribution to our stone soup.  We put the ingredients in a crock pot and ate it for our lunch.  Most of the time, the cafeteria workers came to our classroom while we were doing it.  The kids loved it (and probably never had eaten homemade vegetable soup at home).

Thanks Pat ....  I check and you
are correct ....  I should not eat ginger while I am
on coumadin....
Funny thing.   I just bought some fresh ginger today,
which I will toss out....

I appreciate the warning!

Hi everyone on this Thursday morning.  I got out early and did the morning outside chores.  This is a busy day for me so will try to be brief with comments today.  Yesterday I stayed home until time to go to the church for the Wednesday evening meal.  Scott called late yesterday afternoon to say he was not up to going and was fighting a migraine headache he had had for two days.  I sure hope he is better this morning.  So I went by myself.  Since I was on the list for two meals I paid for both and brought one home.  It was "breakfast in the evening" last night so I am enjoying a full breakfast this morning and sure won't need to have any lunch, which will work out well as I won't get home until around 1 pm and I will be ready for some rest so won't have to fool with lunch.

Patricia, thanks for the explanation of Stone Soup.  I think I have had a lot of that over my lifetime and didn't know that was what it was called.  My Mother didn't waste anything and my wife has always been the same. Without your common room and areas I expect many of the residents would seldom interact with others and just stay in their apartments.  Interesting article on ginger.  I have never heard this before.  I sure don't need any lower blood pressure.

Hal, if Pat wasn't following a very strict type diet I would be making some of that Stone Soup for us.

JeanneP, I hadn't heard about the restriction on Pneumonia shots.  I know exactly when I had mine and it hasn't been the 10 years I was told should occur between shots.  Guess things have changed since them.  I am using an IBM keyboard that I have had for quite a few years and it is functioning well so have no plans on replacing it.  I had another down day yesterday and rested for a couple of hours in the late morning and then another couple of hours after lunch.  I was feeling better by evening.

Sue, what a great idea you had when teaching and the kids got a very good lunch.

Sandy, glad that Patricia shared that information with us although don't know that I am on any medication that would be impacted.  The only blood thinner I take is a baby aspirin each morning.

MaryPage

We are enjoying the edges of a storm here.  Furious and frothy dark grey waters making lots of white caps in the bay.  The bridge and the Eastern Shore just dark smudges on the unbroken blueish-white backdrop.  Everything waving and flapping in the strong breezes.  Rain fairly steady, and all is drenched.

Mary Ann

I think I'll get my flu shot from my doctor's office because they will have a record of my last pneumonia shot.  I know I had one in 2005 and I think I've had one since.  I know at one time one was supposed to be permanent, then it was for 10 years, later for five.  It would be nice if they'd make up their minds.

MaryPage, it is interesting to read about your Chesapeake Bay and whitecaps etc because looking at Lake Michigan, the lake is quite calm.  What a difference 1000 miles +\- makes!

Family lunch today at Cheers.  I don't know how many of us will be there, but it's always fun.

Mary Ann

wjoan

We are fortunate here as the Deot. of Health comes by every year and gives us our flu shots.  Nice.

Mary Ann

I had lunch today with my two favorite nephews.  When there's just the  three of us, we often meet at Cheers which is near Tom and me but not for Terry.  When there are just the three of us, I pay for all three once a month.  I had a pulled pork sandwich and for beverage I had an Arnold Palmer in honor of Arnold Palmer!  My minister's wife was there too with a friend, who I did not recognize so she may not be a member of my church.

The sun is trying to shine and our temperature has risen from 50 degrees at 8 am to 62 degrees at 2:30 pm.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  It is 65 degrees here this morning, which is the coolest temperature we have had for months.

Yesterday was a very busy day as Thursdays usually are.  While at the restaurant the follow I pick up on Thursdays litterly had to be picked up as he lost his balance and fell backward to the floor.  The only damage was a scraped top part of his hand. He fell into a table that slid away but apparently broke the impact of the fall.  He is a tall man but not steady on his feet.  After my Wisdom group at Church yesterday morning I stopped at the Dollar Tree store to get birthday cards for Pat to use in the card ministry she does for our Sunday School class and finally at Aldi's for some vegetables.  I felt good yesterday so didn't come home exhausted but was sure ready for a rest period.  Pat suggested that we go out to eat dinner and I certainly didn't argue with her.

MaryPage, I guess I wasn't aware of a storm in your area.

Joan, that is a nice service of the Department of Health to come to you all for the flu shots.

Mary Ann, nice of you to treat your nephews once a month and I am sure they appreciate it.

MaryPage

We are still rainy, misty, closed in horizon, blowy, grey-ish white-ish, getting cooler, not very nice outside day.  Days.  Getting tired of it.  Chip is supposed to take me on a visit to Trader Joe's for some of my favorite frozen oatmeal and some other goodies.  They have so many pumpkin flavored offerings in that store at present, it is enough to drive all shoppers crazy.  I kind of get a kick out of seeing how much stuff they can come up with to give that flavor to!  Then we are going to Grump's, where I will dig into my favorite omelet, the Ranchero.  Heaven any day of the week, but especially on a soggy one like this!

Good morning from the Interior, still awaiting the promised snow that has yet to come.

I went visiting and shopping with friends and bought Farrah a large blue ring with a yellow ball inside. I was hesitant as the other cats I've had quickly figured out how to take the toy out of the ring.

Farrah was not impressed although she ignores the balls she already has so I should have known better to purchase a $12.00 toy when she doesn't play with the ones she has, (I sound like a parent!). I tried putting in treats, but she smelled them, sat by the ring but made no effort for the treats.

So, I got the idea of sticking in the toy one of her felt mice and playing around with it while she looked on. I then left her alone with the toy. She got that one out after lying on her back, turning her head sideways and scrutinizing all angles, trying first her teeth and then a paw to lift it out from underneath or on the middle ring opening.

So I think that is a toy she will occasionally play with if I initiate her interest. Ah well, lesson learned. Since she enjoys catching her mice and sitting on her haunches to fling them away, only to chase them down, then why would she play with a ball in a ring?

I was exhausted and lay down on the couch to read. I kept finding myself opening my eyes repeatedly so set the book aside for a nap somewhere between three or four. Lo and behold, it was one am when I woke back up, washed my face, went to bed to toss and turn until after three am! I just woke up at eight am!

MaryPage, in the online news it mentioned that there would be heavy rain and widespread flooding in the entire northeast of the country through the weekend.

In the no news is good news column, there has been absolutely no gossip or mention of the religious group since the earlier altercations.

Mary Ann

It's a damp day here but no continual rain.  I don't have a story about Kendrick, but I laugh when I see him asleep in the middle of the living area carpet.  He has other, more comfortable places to sleep, but often chooses the floor.

The man who has washed my windows for years just called and I decided not to have the windows washed this fall.  He was here in July or August and I don't think the windows need washing yet.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

My old cat has been in "basement jail" for two days, and still has one more day before he is released!  Because we're dog-sitting our son's Labrador Retriever, poor Winnie is confined to the basement.  Of course I have it all fixed up real nice for him, with his familiar bed, and a couple of chairs with plenty of blankets. I go down there off and on throughout the day to visit with him, and at about 9:00 PM, I turn on the radio to a soothing classical station, leave a dim light on, and say goodnight!   It's quite a large basement - lots of boxes, shelves and junk stored there, plus a bathroom.  So there is plenty of room for him to roam around.

Mary Ann

I read and post in a few folders, I think not many, but more than two.  Occasionally someone will post the question "where is everyone".  It is 9:09 pm here and I have not been on my computer for any reason since 6 pm.  There was only one folder I post in that was open and there were maybe only four or five other folders that I do not even read.  I know it has been mealtime in my part of the country, but other places are just starting.  So - where is everyone!!!

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, I either do not post at all or sometimes overdo posting in a single day, so my habits are erratic. Possibly more people are busy getting ready for a new season?

It seems as if not everyone has anything new to report each day.

For myself, I spent the day finishing and sending my final lesson in one subject. Then I finished and posted in three each for lessons with two other classes.

I have three emails, (Different ones for various topics); and somehow daily, they all go up to 100 emails or close.

I know there are apps called spiders, that are programmed to search the web gathering items such as email addresses or passwords. I certainly hope those are not the spiders, the information  was referring to

It is Saturday.
It is the first day of October.
We have another one all wet and rainy, with the breeze tossing the water in the bay every which way.
Apparently we are caught between weather patterns.
I will have a cozy day.  Have swept out the stale air and let in the fresh (is there really any such thing anymore?  I read there is not!) simply by opening the front and back sliding glass doors and letting the stiff breezes whoosh through like a locomotive train.
Have plenty of good books and am well provisioned, so I'll survive.  Happy October one to you all.
Did you catch the news last night? We had a small blessing: a hilarious moment in the midst of all the ghastly news bulletins.  I laughed my self silly.
President Obama attended services for the wonderful Shimon Peres, and the film clip showed him standing inside the doorway of Air Force One calling and beckoning to someone still on the tarmac to come on, the plane was in line to take off and leave Israel.  And this someone did not come, and did not come, and President Obama stepped out on to the top of the stairs and called and beckoned some more.  And I was wondering Who In This World would dare to dawdle when the President of the United States was ordering them to get the heck on the aircraft!  I just couldn't figure it!  And then, when the latecomer finally hustled up the stairs, I burst into joyful laughter.  Did you see it?

larryhanna

Hi everyone on a lovely cool morning here in South Carolina.  It was 60 degrees when I got up this morning and only to get into the low 80's this afternoon.  This will be a laid back day for me as have nothing on my schedule.  Dinner is also taken care of with the exception of putting together a lettuce salad to go with the Chicken Pot Pie that our friend brought over a couple of days ago.  I didn't realize it was the Chicken Pot Pie until I cut it after supper last evening thinking it was going to be an apple pie.  Wow was I ever shocked when I saw the vegetables in it.  We had a good laugh over it.  Yesterday was also a quiet day.  I do plan on watching some football this afternoon.

MaryPage, I have never been into a Trader Joe's store.  I like pumpkin bread and especially pumpkin pie, which happens to be our son's favorite pie.  Hope you have better weather today.

Patricia, I don't think we can ever out wit a cat.  It is interesting how different cats can be from each other in temperament and what they like to eat or use to play.  You must have needed the extra rest.

Mary Ann, you sound like me with your window washing decision.  If it isn't broken don't fix it or wash it if not dirty.

Marilyne, your cat has his own living quarters.  That is very impressive.  :)  It sounds like you give him plenty of attention throughout the day.

Patricia, I had to laugh at myself when I read that "not everyone has anything new to report each day".  I have never let that stop me as I am sure you all don't need to be told.  :)

Sandy, what is a Spider in terms of folks who are online?  I haven't heard that term before.  (I see Patricia has asked the same question.)

Mary Ann

Patricia, actually, I do not post daily in the two folders I frequent the most.  I've had people ask where I am!  I try to post here more often so that the powers that be won't decide it should be eliminated.

Our condo board has decided to take out the plantings next to our garages to keep the siding from deteriorating from the sprinklers.  A board member has removed the top soil and put it between the building and garage and will now lay plastic over what is left, then will pour small stones in the area.  Then he will remove the sprinkler head there.  Previously, a volunteer woman gardener removed my myrtle and she will resettle that between the garage and building.

Our temp this morning at 8:30 was 50 degrees and at 11 am is 60 degrees.  Fall is here and will stay.  Later in the week, we will be in the 70s which will be wonderful if the sun shines.

Mary Ann

MaryPage

It is POURING out there!  So I rushed to the City Dock webcam to see if they are in kayaks down there yet, but the streets are not flooded.  Neither is downtown full of the usual throngs of Saturday visitors.  You can SEE the rain coming down, though!
Be patient, and keep clicking, and you will get the real, moving thing.  Don't give up!

I am not sure what "spider" is....

But I did find this on Google:

A spider is a program that visits Web sites and reads their pages and other information in order to create entries for a search engine index.

The major search engines on the Web all have such a program, which is also known as a "crawler" or a "bot."

Spiders are typically programmed to visit sites that have been submitted by their owners as new or updated. Entire sites or specific pages can be selectively visited and indexed.

Spiders are called spiders because they usually visit many sites in parallel at the same time, their "legs" spanning a large area of the "web."

Spiders can crawl through a site's pages in several ways. One way is to follow all the hypertext links in each page until all the pages have been read.

Oh well   !!
