Thanks Mary Ann, but I just cannot see any longer to cettain things.

Mary Ann

Joan, I'll copy your message to the Computer Q&A and ask someone to reply in Norm's B&T.  I hope it works.

Thanks Mary Ann.  I could write to Rick <Rammel> myself it is just that Jeanne has always helped me in the past.

Mary Ann

Joan, Rick does post in the Q&A folder so might be the one who answers your post.  I copied it as you wrote it, including your e-mail address, but also suggested they might post a solution here.

Mary Ann, thanks.  I would write him directly but not able to use yahoo email at all.  Cannot even acess my contact list.  Has to be one of the ones with access to all on here.

Good Morning Everyone.

Sorry that you are having so much trouble, Joan.

Still working with one weak hand, so please forgive my mistakes.

My only Grandson just graduated from  boot camp as an infantry man...   I am proud of his choice to serve our country,  but also very worried about his safety ...

It is rainy here on the rocky coast o Maine  :'(

Have a good day EVERYONE...

Hi everyone. We are expecting another hot day getting to 90 degrees this afternoon.  Yesterday we got into the mid-90's and it was humid.  When I got to the doctor's office yesterday for my appointment they asked me hadn't I gotten the call that she wasn't going to be there.  I had not and when I got home I checked my call list back for three weeks and their number was not present.  Fortunately this was just across the river, probably about 6 miles away.  So I left and stopped at Costco to return the apples and replace them.  I ate a quick lunch there and came home and laid down for two hours plus.  All three doctor's appointments/tests were rescheduled this week.

There is nothing on the schedule that I must do today. I did make a tripr to Walmart to pick up a prescription for Pat and get a few other items.  I was able to get the electric cart and that helped as seem to be dragging today.  Yesterday afternoon Pat made a gallon of chili so we will be having some of that for our dinner tonight so no more cooking needed for today other than to fix my lunch.  I did fix Pat's breakfast and unloaded the dishwasher.

Marilyne, your cat certainly would qualify as a senior cat.  Glad he is still energetic.

JeanneP, I often get caught trying to get by with the less expensive item.  However, these apples were suppose to be top quality.  I did take the 10 lb. bag back and got a refund and tried again.  When I got home I took out all of the apples and examined them and they were fine.  I share a few with my son and granddaughter and the rest keep very well in our fruit drawer.  I usually cut up two of them at a time in to nice chunks and put them in a plastic bag and that way I do't have to cut up apples each day for my lunch. I have had apple as a part of my lunch for years and never tire of them.  I probably eat about a quarter of one of these large apples each day.  I like applesauce but these apples are for my lunch.

June, I no long try to bite into an apple either as want to protect my front teeth.

Patricia, your tree budding season is very interesting.  It sounds like you will be getting your money's worth from the increased senior benefits.  I have never heard of such a program around here but pretty sure we would not qualify.  It is pretty amazing that Farrah was rescued.  I didn't realize cats had such a long life span.  Our cat died when he was 14 from heart problems.

Mary Ann, I bet Kendrick had a great time playing with that bug on the deck.  As of a couple of days ago Jeanne was OK and posted that she had just been in the doldrums for a few days and didn't feel like posting.

Joan, I have never used the Yahoo mail system so can't be of any help.

Sandy, that is a good accomplishment that your Grandson has joined the military. Does he know where he will next be assigned?

Marilyne

Sandy - I don't blame you for being worried about your grandson joining the military. Too many wars and too much chaos going on in so many parts of the world.  My cousin's grandson is now in training to become a police officer!  That's another career choice that I wouldn't want my grandson to consider.

Larry - Did you ever get your echocardiogram??  Sounds like you're tiring very quickly in recent days?  Maybe this weekend you and Pat can relax and enjoy that 90 degree Spring weather. What did you think of your granddaughter's boy friend?

No 90's on the weather map around here!  Our outdoor temp was 48, when I got up this morning, which is cold for this time of year. Right now, at 9:00 am, it's only 53.

Mary Ann

Sandy, I share your pride and fear about your grandson being in the military.  My only remaining nephew will be 60 in July and the two great-nephews just became fathers so I think they will not be enlisting.

I'm not sure if I am using the Yahoo mail system or AT&T.  Whichever it is, it is working OK.  I do get irritated on another computer when Yahoo wants me to sign in every time I use it because I have to remember the password each time.

Tom has had an infection in his ear for some time.  It was very painful at first but the pain subsided, however, the swelling did not.  He is at the doctor's now.

Kendrick went out on the deck while I went to the mailbox.  That way he can't greet me at the front door, trying to get outside.  When he is at the door, I yell "NO" and he knows that that means; he backs away.  His "mother" (Annie) stopped by this morning and he didn't run away from her, but he kept his distance.  He is in the living room now, probably sleeping.

How nice - the optometrist's office called this morning to see how my eye infection is coming along and she said they'd call again Monday.  To me, the eye is coming along OK, not as much pain or irritation and maybe even a bit less pink than before.

We should have a nice day, temp is about 63 and it's only just past noon.

I haven't heard, yet.   He is on to more training now.      I just hope that he is happy and stays well.

Hi everyone.  We have an overcast morning and anticipated rain throughout the day.  We need the rain so no complaints and that will delay starting to have to water the yard.  Our big activity for the day is taking our granddaughter and her boyfriend, Scott and Pat and I to the Chop House Restaurant.  It is a very fine restaurant that we have used for special occasions ever since we moved here.  I called yesterday and made reservations for 3:30 and also arranged for a small birthday cake to be served after we finish the meal.  We have not met Jennifer's boy friend yet so that will be nice.  Scott really likes him.

Marilyne, I agree with you on the danger of both being in the military as well as being a policeman.  I am thankful that there are men and women willing to do these jobs and protect us.  I will have the echo cardiogram next Friday afternoon.  It will not be a full test but what the doctor called a limited test looking to see if the side of the heart are in sync as they should be.  I will then see the cardiologist on the 24th.  We will be making two trips there that day as yesterday Pat called to get a prescription filled and found out she must see the cardiologist before she will prescribe it again as it has been over a year.  Unfortunately, her appointment is at 10:30 and mine is at 12:15.  Fortunately her office is only about 15 minutes away.  As I mentioned above we won't meet the boy friend until this afternoon.

Mary Ann, I have always felt ear pain is a special type of pain.  I haven't one an ear ache since childhood but remember the practice then of blowing smoke into the ear.  My dad smoked back then.  I hope Tom gets whatever is needed to heal the swelling.  Sure glad to read that your eye is coming along OK.

Sandy, the military does seem to provide a lot of training.  Years ago I took some correspondence courses from the military and they were very good.  As a Federal employee I was eligible to take the courses without cost.  Hope your wrist is feeling better.

Good morning from the Interior. No real changes here and Farrah has been up, washed and fed. Lately, when I am showering, she will sit on the toilet and do her own washing up which I find amusing. Our morning routine is very similar. After showering, it is filling her cylinder with kibble and providing fresh water, while I make a morning pot of coffee. Then she naps while I do a quick calendar check for daily to-dos and then turn on the computer for emails and computer visits.

Our weather is not warming up. I do hope it will not be another cool and rainy summer. If so, this will make three in a roll. We do have some, (fourteen); forest fires already, but they are twenty-five to thirty-five miles southeast of us. So, I guess cooler temperatures are good right now.

Dora must really love Alan, as he purchased some screening and wood and sectioned off a portion of their yard for Duchess. He had previously spent a hundred dollars for an extensive cat tree for her. Alan has never had a pet and he tends to be obsessive not only with Duchess but it was also why his store did so well before retiring and selling. I did email him some Pininterest pages on cat enclosures and now Dora says we're in collusion.  ???

Larry, this area teems with farms and the senior benefits program aims to help both parties. Many seniors cannot afford a number of fresh fruits and vegetables and farming is one of the area's main activities. Local farms sponsor schoolyard gardens and gardening plots on hospital grounds as well as in areas for local food pantries. There are also community garden plots and neighborhood farmers markets and a year around farm co-op.

Many local farms sell monthly shares or you can purchase part of the harvest by providing labor which works out for a lot of folks. The senior benefit for those over sixty-five allows for a certain amount of fresh farm produce and not store purchases. The shares are delivered or you can pick them up at one of the farmer's markets.

Sandy, the military does provide many educational opportunities for their members which are a good thing, so your grandson will have many choices in his chosen fields if he wishes.

MaryAnn, you are lucky in Kendrick's not wanting to explore on his own. My younger sister had a Siamese, Benny, who was badly beaten up by an adult cat in his youth. Even though he grew quite large, he never forgot it and would not go outside on his own and stuck close by his people for safety!

wjoan

Mornin all.  My son brought me 2 dozen Tulips for Mother's Day.  They are beautiful and I put a pic up on Facebook of them.  Gotta love that boy <man> :)

Marilyne

Patricia - Our weather here in the San Francisco Bay area, is not warming up either.  There's a North wind that has been blowing both day and night, for a week, with temps in the high 50's or low 60's during the day. It's expected to continue on throughout the weekend.  No warmth to the sun when the wind is so relentless. Also no rain expected, so I guess we're finished for the season, and won't see a measurable drop until November.  Fire season will likely come early, because of this wind.

Mary Ann - I saw your message in Soda Shoppe, regarding regional dialects.  I have always been fascinated with how the English language/pronunciation, changes in different sections of this country - as well as in Australia, NZ, and the UK.

Sometimes at night I listen to a radio station that comes from The Isle of Wight, located in the English Channel, off the coast of England.  They play music that I like from the 1930's through 1950's.  I cannot understand a word of English, that the hosts or DJ's are speaking!  They might as well be talking a foreign language, as far as I'm concerned! ??? If I turn the sound up really loud, I can sometimes understand a few words.  However, the voices of the singers on the old recordings, (Nat "King" Cole, Doris Day, et al), come in as clear and sharp as they always did.

angelface555

Marilyne, we are the same with the exception of very little wind and often on and off again rain. I guess I should change that to somewhat similar?

I hope we both warm up sometime soon!

Here is a recipe for Texas Chili and Hal, if you see this, what is your opinion of this recipe, is it authentic to Texas style?

We are on the cool side, too, with rain expected later today or tomorrow - maybe.  It is about 65 degrees now and I have no idea if that is normal or not.  But the sun is shining at present, so it is a nice day.

We have a River Run today and people from all over the world come to run in the race.  I think it is 25 miles, but I'm not sure.  Streets have been blocked off since yesterday to prepare for the run.  Tom left early to see if he can get some passengers before and after.  He's been gone since about 5 am and at nearly 1 pm is not home yet.  I know he's not running!  Being cooler, it is a nice day for a run and if it was hot, a lot of runners would be in trouble.

Kelly, from the Isle of Man in the English Channel, who posted in several folders, wrote that their island had a language other than the English language and maybe the Isle of Wight has the same thing so no wonder you can't understand them.

Angel, I think there as many "Texas" chili's as can be counted on all fingers and toes.
Everybody has the real thing, it seems.  One thing I did note in their recipe is that they used "coarse ground" beef.  When I was a kid chili meat was always cut up into small cubes and good chili had the fat trimmed.  I have the recipe for the winner of the Terilingua chili cook off, suppose to be the worlds champion of chili cook-offs.

Also, beans in chili are always a pro or con.  Myself personally, I can go either way.  Some canned chili's have so many beans you cant taste the chili.

If you want the recipe for the winner I will type it out for you.  It is the recipe from a family that enters all the contest and has some strange ingredients, like Chicken broth.

Hal, I am also for beans or no beans, either way, is good. Up here it is commonly made with moose or bear meat and a little of Athbaskan Hot Sauce which placed second at Mcllhenny's in 2014 for a hot sauce, against seven countries and eleven states.

Most canned chilis seem to have a soapy taste to them. I did find a recipe for the 2016 winner, is this correct?

"2016 marks the 50th anniversary of that first cook-off. News travels slow out of West Texas so it was only this morning that we discovered that Terlinguan Deanna Castillo won this year’s event. We poked around online and found her recipe on the Ranch Reserve magazine website. Ms Castillo serves her chili at High Sierra Bar and Grill in Terlingua, Texas.

Ghostown Chili

2 pounds of beef chili grind

1 (14.5-ounce) can beef broth

1 (14.5-ounce) can chicken broth

1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 serrano peppers, whole

Salt as needed

Spice Dump #1

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s Cowtown light chili powder

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s San Antonio original chili powder

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s Dixon medium hot chili powder

2 teaspoons Mild Bill’s onion granules

2 teaspoons Wyler’s beef granules

2 teaspoons Wyler’s chicken granules

1 1/2 teaspoons Mild Bill’s garlic granules

1/4 teaspoon Mild Bill’s cayenne pepper

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

Spice Dump #2

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s cumin

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s San Antonio original chili powder

1 tablespoon Mexene chili powder (available from Mild Bill’s)

1 tablespoon Mild Bill’s Cowtown light chili powder

1/2 teaspoon Gunpowder Foods Hot Stuff (available from Mild Bill’s)

1/8 teaspoon Mild Bill’s cayenne pepper

1/8 teaspoon brown sugar

1 package Sazón Goya (available from Mild Bill’s)

Brown the beef in a large pot; drain the grease and remove the meat from the pot. Add the beef broth, chicken broth, and tomato sauce in the same pot used for the meat; bring to a boil. Once boiling, add the serrano peppers and Spice Dump #1. Add the meat back into the pot. Boil on medium heat for 30 to 35 minutes or until meat is done. Squeeze the juice of the peppers into the chili and discard the peppers. Forty-five minutes before serving, bring the chili to a boil. Add Spice Dump #2, and cook for 30 minutes over medium-low to medium heat. Check for salt, and adjust, if necessary.

and for good measure here’s H. Allen Smith’s recipe

Get three pounds of chuck, coarse ground. Brown it in an iron kettle. (If you don’t have an iron kettle you are not civilized. Go out and get one.) Chop two or three medium-sized onions and one bell pepper and add to the browned meat. Crush or mince one or two cloves of garlic and throw into the pot, then add about half a teaspoon of oregano and a quarter teaspoon of cumin seed. (You can get cumin seed in the supermarket nowadays.) Now add two small cans tomato paste; if you prefer canned tomatoes of fresh tomatoes, put them through a colander. Add about a quart of water. Salt liberally and grind in some black pepper and, for a starter, two or three tablespoons of chili powder. (Some of us use chile pods, but chile powder is just as good.) Simmer for an hour and a half or longer, then add your beans. Pinto beans are best, but if they not available, canned kidney beans will do â€" two 15-17 oz. cans will be adequate. Simmer another half hour. Throughout the cooking, do some testing from time to time and, as the Gourmet Cookbook puts it, “correct seasoning.” When you’ve got it right , let it set for several hours. Later you may heat it up as much as you want and put the remainder in the refrigerator. It will taste better the second day, still better the third, and absolutely superb the fourth. You can’t even begin to imagine the delights in store for you one week later

Here’s Wick Fowler’s Recipe

3 pounds chili-grind beef, mostly lean
1-1/2 cups canned tomato sauce
Water as needed
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
3 heaping tablespoons chile powder
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon cumin seed or powder
2 onions, chopped
6 or more cloves garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 tablespoon paprika
12 or more whole dried Japanese chiles (very hot)
6 to 8 chilipiquins (very, very hot)
3 tablespoons flour for thickener

Sear the meat in a large skillet until gray in color. Transfer the meat to a chili pot, along with the tomato sauce and enough water to cover the meat about 1/2 inch, mixing well. Stir in the Tabasco, chili powder, oregano, cumin, onions, garlic, salt, cayenne, and paprika. Add the Japanese chiles and chilipiquins, taking care not to break them open. Let simmer for 1 hour and 45 minutes, stirring gently at intervals.

About 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time, skim off any grease that has risen to the top. Mix the flour with a little water to make it liquid without lumps. Add this paste to ingredients in the pot and blend in thoroughly. Adjust salt and seasonings. Unless you are chili hungry at the moment, let the chili remain in the pot overnight, then reheat and serve. Freeze any chili left over. Serve with sliced or chopped onions and pinto beans on the side.
Yield: 8 servings

Joan, I think I saw a couple of babies in the bottom frame. otherwise, the parents are either sitting on the nest or the angle of the camera doesn't show the inside of the nest.  I am sure as the chicks grow, we'll be able to see them.

Hi guys!

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers here!

Mary Ann, you mentioned Kelly.  I had kind of forgotten about him.  Does anyone know what happened to him?

I am slowly coming out of my depression over my son, so hopefully you will be seeing more of me.  I guess it just takes time to accept.

Love to all,
shirleyn.

Shirley, this is a place to share your feelings, so feel free to come in and cry any time.

As for Kelly, people tried to contact him, and finally someone had a message that he was still alive and would be back some day.  That was a loonngg time ago.  I know he had problems with his hands and used voice recognition to get on the computer.

Another one who hasn't been heard from in a long time is Molly, aka Mahlia, whose name is Eileen Brennan.  She posted in the Soda Shoppe and lives in Concord NC.  Her husband is Mohamed, an Egyptian.

Nothing going on today at Grand Haven because it's Sunday, but it is very pretty today, the water is so calm and the sun is shining.  The pier has a long white spot and I wonder if they're replacing the concrete; I think that is one reason they took down the catwalk.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

shirleyn - I'm glad you're feeling better.  You'll have days ahead of you that will be difficult, and as Mary Ann said, this is the place to come and share your feelings.

I heard from Kelly a few months ago, but sorry to say that he didn't seem like himself at all. He said he was feeling better, and seemed hopeful about returning to S&F.  Molly, Mahlia, Eileen Brennan, also went by the name Persian, for a long time.  I thought she said her real name was Mary, but I'm probably mistaken?

Good morning everyone and Happy Mother's Day from the Sunny, clear, Interior!

Shirleyn, I want to just say it will always be there, but it will get better and we are here if needed.

Nothing new here, Farrah is running about and I am not but the sun is out and next week we are to reach eighty degrees so that is something to look forward to! Our fourteen spring fires are down to three so that is good news. Not much else going on this Sunday so I'll wish everyone a good day!
