MARYANN
You had a great time meeting up with relatives and the wedding sounds lovely.
Can imagine you feeling tired now but happy.

so_P_bubble

Great to see you back MaryAnn.  I bet it feels good to be back in your own space, even if the trip was a great success and you enjoyed meeting everyone there.

Just take it easy for a few days.

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  It looks like it is going to be another nice day here in South Carolina with only a very low chance of any rain.  It will again get up to around 90 degrees by late afternoon.  We are going to Sunday School and Church this morning and then out to lunch.  Nothing else planned other than watching the end of the PGA golf tourney later this afternoon.  We did go out to dinner at Ruby Tuesday's last evening and then stopped to pick up the groceries from the online order.  Unfortunately they didn't have several of the items on our list so it was a very small order.

Hal, sounds like yesterday was a good day to stay inside with the A/C on.

Joan, where I am living predicting the weather must be difficult as the forecast for the next few days is never very accurate.

Patricia, I hope I am still learning and certainly interested.  While I was working and had a young family I started a Master's Degree and took about 18 hours of classes.  However, I had to be gone on every other weekend as the school was 100 miles from home and the classes were on Friday night and Saturday all day.  I finally decided I was taking too much time away from my young family and the additional degree wasn't going to have a factor in my career advancement so did not complete the degree. I always loved school and guess that is why I continue to do a lot of reading.  Interesting story about Grandpa Mason.

Mary Ann, I enjoyed your "book" about your very full week.  I expect you are glad to be back home.

Mary Ann

I'm glad to see I left enough room for others to post.  I knew I was running on, but I didn't realize how much I posted until it really was posted.  I am sure I missed something, but I'm not going to find out what.

It was good to get in my own bed last night.  I went to bed about 11 pm, got up about 4 am, went back to sleep immediately and got up again about 6 am.  I went back to bed about 7:30 am and slept until 8:30, got up, showered and washed my hair and now I'm drying off what I can't dry with a towel (my right shoulder doesn't let me get around my back).  I've heard Tom but he hasn't come upstairs.  Dot has not gotten her new glasses so cannot drive and we did not go to church again.  Someone picked her up for Bible study so they know why we're not there on Sunday.

When I went back to bed this last time, there was a cat on my bed so I laid down beside him and we both went back to sleep.  He usually doesn't stay long when he gets on my bed, but this was later and he was enjoying one of his sleeps.  He's still on the bed.

We had good weather on the way north yesterday and it looks as if it will continue today, however, there also is a storm in the forecast.  I don't mind - I'm home.  One year when I was in Indy with Jim, we had a storm and there was a lot of noise caused by golf-ball-sized hail.  I had never seen hail that size, nor had I ever heard such noise.  Our hail is more like pea-size and you can hear it, but the noise is nothing like what I heard that time.

The cat took a few minutes to realize I had returned and he was glad to see me.  After I sat down, he kept rubbing against my shins, so once again I have a supply of cat hair on my slacks.  Cat hair doesn't remove easily.  Tom Harton told of washing something at one of his rentals where there had been a cat and he said there was enough cat hair in the lint trap to cover another cat.

Down in Indy, the family will attend the Indy 500.  I think they mostly sit together.  The bridal couple will be among them and then they'll leave for a honeymoon in Costa Rica.  I think they'll be gone a week; she is an RN and I don't know what he does.  He graduated from Indiana U in the same class as she did.

I'll be back later if anything interesting happens.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Welcome back home!  I enjoyed reading your book.. . the way you described the wedding and everything else, gave me a good mental picture of all the festivities, and made me feel like I was there.  I love big family weddings!  It's a wonderful opportunity to get everyone together, and to catch up on extended family and long time friends.

I didn't realize that the Indy 500 was happening this weekend.  AJ will probably watch it, so I'll take a look.  I'll look for a group of happy people, amongst the spectators, and will imagine that it's your family! ;)

I can tell that Kendrick is happy to have you back home again. He will probably stick fairly close to you for the next couple of days.

FlaJean

I've also enjoyed your "book", Mary Ann.  A nice trip but it is always good to get home again.

I always look forward to reading everyone's posts on this forum although I'm not much of a poster myself.  It is a little overcast here northwest Florida, but the cloudiness seems to make the colors of our many flowers brighter and prettier than usual.

Carol

Fla Jean:  Good day to you!  Nice to see your post.

Gloria de:  The bird by the front door is tiny and Don says the eggs are light blue.  There is a Robin next under the back deck stairs every year and that is a Robin for sure.  The little bird by the front leaps out so fast I can't see what she is--- she hides in a huge evergreen tree and come out to circle just to check if anyone is near the nest.  So much fun to watch.  What super parents they are every year.

Larry:  House sales are insane here - I could stand on the corner and whisper about selling and an agent would be on it in seconds!  We get mailings and phone calls all the time.

Mary Ann:  "There is no place like home.."

Good morning from a cool, breezy, somewhat sunny Interior. I'm beginning to wonder if three cool rainy summers in a roll are indicating a trend?

Farrah is, as usual. She piteously goes to the closet and cries "Win." After seeing I'm ignoring her, she gives me a sad, forlorn look as if she's starving to death without a treat,(A true academy award winning actress);  and goes on to something else. Since she only eats about a three-fourths cup of anything each day, I would rather it wasn't a treat. She is now back to eating her kibble.

I finally put together my three in one stick vacuum and love it! I do like my indoor outdoor vac for the heavy jobs but the stick is lightweight and versatile. My Bissel manual sweeper just doesn't pick up much in my carpet so I'm donating it. Now if I would just get my computer monitor up and functioning so I could divide the programs between that and my laptop! I just seem to be able to handle only a few jobs at a time before my energy runs out. Yesterday was several loads of wash, putting clean winter items away and cleaning the bathroom. Today is going to be resting.

MaryAnn, Larry and all, I love to hear from everyone, miss MaryPage's reporting in and hearing from Johanne; which means those long books are very enjoyable. It makes me feel like part of the family or at least our family here. Kendrick's rubbing on your slacks means he's welcoming you back and also letting everyone know he's scent marking you as his.

I have been reading a book by an FBI hostage negotiator and instructor with their Behavioral and Analysis Center and came upon this little gem that shouldn't be a surprise.

"So what happened in people’s brains when they saw information that contradicted their worldview in a charged political environment? As soon as they recognized the video clips as being in conflict with their worldview, the parts of the brain that handle reason and logic went dormant. And the parts of the brain that handle hostile attacks â€" the fight-or-flight response â€" lit up."

Tom and I went out for brunch; I had a ham and cheese sub which was very good and I ate the whole thing - usually I bring half of my meal home.  When we left, the cat was on my bed again (still?) and I have been unable to make it.  It was funny too because I had the top of my suitcase open and Kendrick was lying against the top.  Patricia, Kendrick has marked me by scent for so long, it's surprising I don't smell like a cat (only he doesn't smell, unless my smeller is out of order).

I am watching the PGA tour and they're in Ft Worth Texas.  Things are quite close as the top score is -9 and within the top ten it goes to -6.  I enjoy seeing players from different countries.

Junee, you're right, I am tired and I could stand another nap, but I think I'll hold off if I can.

Mary Ann, I really enjoyed reading about your trip and the wedding. It was almost like being there with you. You write so well. I am having a very lazy Sunday. Went to Chapel, then lunch, then home to nap and read. Thanks for the interesting report on your trip, and I hope we get to see your picture.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

Mary Ann

June, I did not get any good pictures, hardly even record shots.  I won't be sending any of them to the family.  There were many people in front of me and when i did get pictures, I was far away.

MaryAnn, cats will often scent-mark their person daily to send a message about who claims that person and especially if the person has been gone for awhile or smells traces of another animal on us.  Cats have nine main scent glands all over their body and they scent mark their preferred family, human, dog or feline and can get upset if they smell a recent and or overriding new scent.

When I am gone for awhile, Farrah immediately winds about me sniffing my hands, feet or purse It is comical in that she knows if I have strayed, (Particularly with Duchess!); she will then rub all over to obliterate the other scent and lay down hers instead.

I came here to post that Allen found a new playmate for Duchess and she is evidently not too happy about it but hopefully this will pass. Bonnie, is a twelve-week-old white kitten with a Hitler-style brown mustache and one large brown dot on the forefront of her right hind leg. She just wants to love everyone and play with everyone and Duchess would prefer to kick her out, preferably on her head!

They've settled Bonnie in the spare bedroom and Allan temporary replaced the door with a screen door. Pet Pride told them to rub both cats with a towel and put each other's towel in the other cat's  beds. After a couple of days, they will put the cats together in the same room, for short periods of time, along with supervision. The average time is two weeks for socialization to create a bond. Although sometimes that never happens it is rare. I know of one family whose two cats have clearly defined territory. One cat has the upstairs, the other downstairs and a fight ensues if they move into the other's territory.

I also believe that Dora is a tad smitten with Bonnie.

Hi everyone.  It is going to be another hot day in the lower 90's on this Memorial Dy.  The schedule is light today.  Pat needs to get some blood tests done so will take her.  Scott and Jennifer plan on coming out sometime this afternoon as Scott has taken the day off.  This would have been his deceased wife's birthday and it was a tradition for him to take that day off of work each year and he has wanted to continue it.  Jennifer has fixed a cake for the occasion.

The man who won the PGA Tourney yesterday was born and  lives in our county.  This is the second tournament he has won this year.  I enjoyed watching the last three hours of the event.  After Church yesterday we stopped and got our lunch and brought it home to eat as it was very hot and neither one of us felt like eating out.  I got a Firehouse Sub and then went through the drive thru at Zaxby's (a chain here in the South) for a nice salad with chicken strips on it.

Mary Ann, each day when I sit down to read the discussions and write I say to myself make it short but that doesn't seem to ever happen.  It sure is taking Dot a long time to get her new glasses.  I was wondering if this was the weekend for the Indy 500.

Marilyne, my wife is not a sports fan but doesn't seem to mind my watching golf or football.  She will generally listen to an audiobook with earphones and I mute the TV and listen to the sports program with my headset.  It works well for us.

FlaJean, nice to see you post.  I remember so many beautiful flowers in Florida even in November of the many years we came to Florida for our timeshare.

Carol, our mother bird also flies around close to us when we go out our front door.  I haven't seen her on the nest for a couple of days so have to wonder if another bird stole the eggs from the nest.  The Internet has sure made home selling a different game as agents can receive notifications quickly when a home is listed by the agent for sale.  That is what happened to our home we just left a couple of years ago.  An agent had a client wanting to buy in our neighborhood and we were offered a contract the first day we had it listed with two more offers within 24 hours.

Patricia, we had one of those Bissel type manual sweepers.  They are light weight but really didn't do a good job.  It sounds like you do quite a bit each day.  I also miss the delightful postings that MaryPage used to leave for us.  I hope she is doing well.  I know Johanne has her hands full but am always happy to see a posting from her.  I don't think she has left us totally.

deAngel, you have a kind neighbor that planted your plants for you.  What did you have planted?  I haven't bought any plants yet this year but need to get something for my front porch at least.

Patricia, Allen is getting into cat raising big time with the second cat.  I expect the two cats will learn to tolerate each other and become friends and playmates before long.  I now read that you indicate it takes generally about two weeks for this to happen.

Mary Ann

Larry, we are going to Dot's later this afternoon for our Memorial Day get together.  Dot has some brats and will find something else to fix.  I have no idea what we have here.  It gets complicated when Dot does not have her glasses because she can't even drive down here, which is about two blocks and all in our complex.  She'd have to close one eye to see properly.  She is very upset that her glasses have not come yet and she's going to check with the optometrist Tuesday.

I had to stop to remember who won the golf tournament yesterday, then I did remember it was Kevin Kisner.  I like it that different golfers win the various tours; it isn't so one-sided with one golfer dominating the tours.  Jordan Spieth finished second so he is coming back.  I see where his caddie had heat problems and had to leave the course on Saturday.  I was on my way north Saturday so did not see that round.

It is already 75 degrees here at 10:45 and I don't know what the forecast is, except it is supposed to be a nice day.

I think my past week is catching up with me as I'm tired.  I am sure I could go back to bed and sleep more, but I'll try to wait until afternoon so I won't be wiped out when at Dot's.  Dot's equivalent of my deck is enclosed, so we won't be eating outside.

I know the cat slept on my bed much of the night but he didn't demand that I pet him; he was at the foot of the bed.

Good morning from a foggy, said to be a partly sunny day in the Interior. We're to have a high of 62 and a low of 38 today with more rain forecast for tomorrow. So many events, golf games, baseball and shopping, street fairs and street musicians are expecting a good day today and I hope they get their wish. The various military bases are sending their various bands to various events and I know the army gunners are at Alaskaland preparing their howitzers for the 1812 overture. We will also see several military flybys and mock duels in the skies today.

It is the day for the farms and gardeners about to begin their annual plantings. I expect to see the various street and bridge planters and the park walkways brimming with plants this week from the various garden clubs. Now if only we had summer but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm going to our annual Memorial Day cookout slash barbecue here at noon but I don't think I'll eat outside. We're having just about everything you'd expect and it should be well attended. This isn't one of the holidays the building owners support but the event is covered by the hospitality committee with a three dollar donation per person or a food offering.

Larry, Alan is following the prevailing wisdom for moving a new cat into an existing cat's household. I always just moved one in and hoped for the best but that didn't always work out. I would be too impatient for the Pet Pride way but they have a proven track record. Dora is getting her cruise plus time spent in London and Paris. Her next door neighbors will be in and out to care for the house and cats while they are away. I'm not sure of the dates, but it sounds wonderful and I am so jealous!

My hallway neighbor had the paramedics again last night. She has been falling and they end up checking on her frequently. If they don't have an answer to their knock, they have retractable master keys on a chain. I sometimes wonder if the keys are supplied by the various buildings they deal with or if it is somehow a city-wide master? Anyway, it is nice to see her up and out and about this morning.

I had an email from MaryPage this morning and she is doing well. She is investing her time in some other areas and probably won't return here. I see Adrienne and others on Facebook but they don't want to return as they prefer to post just in one spot nowadays.

Farrah is on the chair by the window watching the pigeons and the gulls and I better start getting ready for today and my contribution to the feast! Everyone have a great day!

Tom is out until late afternoon.  He offered to get anything we might need so I am going to call Dot to see if there is anything he can get for her for this afternoon.  He will be back before (or after) 5 pm.  His 10-minutes away often turns out to be 30-minutes away.  He means well!

I just got dressed and I will take a nap before the afternoon is too old.  I saw some ads on the golf channel and I don't know if they'll be worth watching or not.  If not, I'll listen to my light classical music which is always enjoyable  and good background music.

Patricia, your days sounds very tasty; I wish we'd have something like that around here.

Grand Haven is interesting today because of all of the boats going in or out of the channel.  I remember it well!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I'm sure you'll have a good time at Dot's later today.  I hope that her glasses come this week, and that they will help her eye to return to the way it should be.

I agree with you about the professional golfers.   It's a good thing, that a variety of  players win as they tour around the world to the different tournaments.  Unlike professional tennis, where two or three top players win every match, for years on end.  I used to watch a lot of tennis, but I got tired of the same old "stars" winning, until they finally retire.  I don't know how many years it's been that Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Djokovich (sp?), and Serena Williams, have been winning every match.  Then they go to the Olympics every four years and win yet another Gold Medal!   The only tourney I watch now is Wimbledon, just because of the long time traditions - and I like to see them play on the grass courts.

It's still early here, 10:45.  We'll be going to the Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose this afternoon to the grave sites of AJ's parents and brother.  Then we'll make our usual tour of the cemetery, and visit the Civil War Memorial, as well as the World War I and II, Korea, and Vietnam memorial sites.  We always end the day by visiting the 9-11 memorial, which is beautiful, and one of the best I have ever seen or read about.

wjoan

Mornin all.  Thought I had better check in here.  I read a few times a day but usually do not have much to contribute.  Supposed to be 93 today.
You all have a great day and HUGS all around,

Mary Ann

Marilyne, after my parents died, I bought an urn for the cemetery and bought flowers each year and planted them in the urn.  In the fall, after Labor Day, I'd go to pull up the remains of the flowers.  I did this for many years and as I got older, I told Norm that I had been doing it all of those years and never had any help in either planting or financial.  So I had him and Dot go to the cemetery with me to bring the urn back here and now I consider that my memorial urn and I put a hanging basket (without the hangers) in it each year.  Without a car now, it is hard to get to buy the plants but I'll get Tom to take me one of these days.  I tried to winter some of the baskets and did not do a good job of watering so I lost them this year but in previous years they've turned out well.  When I am gone, no one will honor my parents, but Tom's generation knew only my dad and I know Tom won't buy flowers for his parents or mine.  He, like many, is not "into" flowers.  And Tom is the only one left now.  I don't mean this to sound like sour grapes because I know that is progress in today's world.

You do lose your independence when you can't drive.  That is what is so frustrating for Dot when she can't see to drive.  Otherwise, it doesn't bother me and I do not miss driving - except when I want to complete an errand!!!

The people next to me are cooking out and it isn't the food that smells but what they're using as fuel.  Phew!

It's 74 here, Joan, very comfortable.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, we are at 92 at 2 pm.  Am sure we will get to the 93  if not higher.

wjoan

We got up to 96 by 5:30.

Mary Ann

Joan, I wouldn't like those temps so early in the year.  Those are July and August temps for me.  And my a/c would most certainly be running.

We're at 65 at 10:10 pm.

And so to bed.

Mary Ann

Jeanne Lee

Joan, I would certainly have an a/c running overtime!   ;)

Hi everyone.  We are in for a cloudy day today and not as hot only up to 85 degrees this afternoon.  After an early evening with a severe thunderstorm watch we ended up with only a short downpour.  It probably was not much in the way of help.  Only a 20% chance of rain this afternoon.  I have no plans to leave the house today but need to fix some more sausage muffins or Pat's breakfast and chop up some green onions.  I also have to call and reschedule my dental cleaning as found yesterday I had another appointment at the same time.

We had a nice time with Scott and Jennifer last evening.  Scott brought over everything needed and made a taco pie that was very good.  We fixed a salad to so with it.  Jennifer had made a Coca Cola cake that was delicious.  As I mentioned yesterday this was in memory of his wife's birthday.

Mary Ann, it sounds like Dot's eye prescription must be really complicated to take so long.  I agree it is nice to see different golfers win these tournaments.  There are many very good young players who should be around for many years.  I was glad to see Jordan Spieth get back in the race again as he had experienced a couple of less than good weeks but I guess that is part of the game.  I heard him interviewed and he expressed a very positive attitude. One of the golfers was ill on Saturday and it apparently was about all he could do to walk the course.  Maybe Kendrick recognized that you were tired and gave you a break by not trying to get you to pet him.

Patricia, I do hope you all experienced a nice day yesterday and the planned events were able to be held without rain.  Glad to see you attended your Memorial Day cookout.  It seems there is always a lot to eat at these type of events and a great variety.  Glad you have heard from MaryPage and that she is doing well.

Marilyne, I used to watch tennis when Billie Jean King and Chris Everett played.  I haven't watched it very often the last few years.  Hope your Memorial Day tour went well.

Joan, I appreciate your postings whether they are long or short as it tells me you are probably doing OK.  That 96 degrees is hot!

Jeanne, we have had to use our A/C for a long time as we have had such warm temperatures.  At least today is not suppose to be in the 90's.

Mary Ann

Larry, I didn't hear about a golfer being ill on Saturday, but I did read that the heat got to Spieth's caddie and Spieth's trainer took his place.  He was OK Sunday.  I did not see the Saturday round because I was on my way home.

Another Kendrick story and I'll see if I can tell it in 25+ words or more!  As I was getting ready for bed last night, Kendrick laid down on the flap that goes over the pillows.  He promptly went to sleep.  I pulled on the flap, hoping he'd get up, but he didn't.  I pulled again and Kendrick held his ground and looked at me as if to say "what do you think you're doing?"  He was in the middle of the bed by that time, so I just got under the sheet and went to sleep.  About 1 am, I got up to visit the bathroom and the cat was still sleeping soundly. Somewhere in the night, he did leave so i had a little more room.  What we do for our animals!

Today is sunny and we're not up to 70 degrees yet.  We have the front door open, but not the slider and it's very nice in here.

Tom will leave later to pick up a friend in Fremont to take him to the airport.  I have no plans to go anywhere.  Tomorrow we will pick up sandwiches and go to Jan's for lunch.  Dot has a birthday Saturday and we'll take her to lunch next week.

Dot has an astigmatism in one eye and that means a prism lens and I think she is going to have to have one in each lens.  She was at church this morning so I think she'll call the optometrist after their lunch hour.  She really is very disgusted.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - things have been mighty quiet in S&F the past couple of days. :( I wish that all of the members who post only in the games, (Village Clubhouse, the place for fun), would also post a messages in other discussions.

Weather is overcast and cool here today.  It wasn't the greatest weekend here, but nothing specific to complain about.  I always remember holiday weekends in the past, when we would go somewhere for a couple of days.  Lots of places around here like Yosemite, Tahoe, or places closer to home, like the beach at Santa Cruz or Redwood Parks.  Those days are gone forever, and now I can only sit back and reminisce.

Looks like Kendrick, doesn't want you to go anywhere, any time soon! Winnie sleeps on the bed during the day and sometimes in the evening, but when it's time for me to go to bed, he goes to the other side of the house, and we close the hall door for the night.  In the morning, he's always waiting for me, right on the other side of the door.  I have no idea if he sleeps in his cat bed all night, or on the living room furniture?  He has the run of most of the house all night long, so maybe he goes downstairs to the bedroom down there, or into the basement?  I don't like him on the bed at night, because he's too restless, and walks all over me, and meows in my ear, et al.  I'm not a good sleeper, even under the best of circumstances, so having him there has never worked for me.

Good afternoon from another rainy Interior. Farrah is napping again while I am here checking out this forum and youtube.

I have discovered some great acapella groups ranging from pop to soul to country, many now including beatboxers. So many folks in my own humble opinion, limit themselves to a certain type of music and will at times, complacently remark on the superiority of their choice. While I am partial to early jazz and blues, I do like all types from classical to hip-hop, some, of course, more than others. Each time I have thought I didn't care for something, I would hear something in that genre that I enjoyed. I will never forget a young classical pianist who once pompously stated that he didn't care for Liszt as he supposedly pounded the piano....what idiocy!

I am slowly getting my house clean and ready for my late June biyearly inspection, doing pickup arrangements for two large furniture donations and also arranging for help in hanging some of my paintings. It takes two normal people to hold up and hang the prints so there is no way for me to do it alone and as my eyes are messed up, I can't do a straight line anyway!

I haven't hung anything before, even with having the right hooks, because I didn't want to run afoul of my lease. However, after having them sit on the floor for three years, I have talked to others that have paintings and or hangings everywhere. And with biyearly inspections, maintenance in and out and some occasionally gossipy visitors, nothing stays hidden here for long. So, back on the wall, they will go, not of course, all at once, but I can switch them out at times!

Yesterday's potluck was simply "Memorial!" With a mite over 200 guests and residents, we had a long table for desserts, meats and one for vegetables and salads, three in all. In the parking lot we had two large gas grills and a smoker slash cooker going. Heaven, and I'm sure my scales will show some of that... One idea from the committee that I liked was baking nine cake layers separately and then slicing them across lengthwise. The various layers were then paired with strawberries, raspberries or rhubarb, or lemon or lime puddings making several separate dishes out of one item. I wish I had known about that some years back! A good time was had by all and for once, everyone helped out with putting up their trash!

Yesterday was seventy degrees with the sun until the rain and wind returned about four PM. It is still going on today.

Marilyne, while I post mostly in Norm's B&T and Soda Shoppe, I do read others and occasionally post.  It amazes me that I have posted as many times as I have.  I worry about the lack of posts and what it can lead to.

Kendrick has the run of the house and he usually does not sleep on my bed, although he may come into my bedroom to check on me.  He's been known to get on one side, then jump over me, then jump off the bed.  And that probably is all I will see of him until morning.  I think he's making up for lost time.

Patricia, I favor classical music and have music on a TV channel.  That way I don't get the commercials.  I am known to mute the commercials on some channels.  I don't buy because of what I see on TV anyway.  What I have on now is Light Classical and most of the music is familiar to me and it is light and airy.  I have the volume down as low as I can get it and still hear the music.  I am sure if I look, I can find some of "my era" music but I haven't tried.

Tom is gone for the evening.  I thought he'd take his friend to the airport, but they are eating with friends, then Tom will take his friend to another friend's house and that friend will take him to the airport.  The flying friend lives in Phoenix.  I will find something to eat and I also will have to start a list so Tom can go grocery shopping.  The cupboard is almost bare.
