Marilyne, don't wait too long to find a dentist you like.  My dentist retired and would not suggest any replacement; he had been my dentist for about 30-40 years and I liked him.  He had the old chairs that only raised up but did not recline.  I went four years before I found a dentist near where I worked.  After I had been to him a few times, I realized I did not like him.  He and his assistant talked across me as if I wasn't there, talking about the condition of my teeth.  He was going to replace every filling in my teeth and I objected to that.  One time he gave me a shot in my jaw and that night I could not open my mouth far enough to get food in it.  I went to him the next day and he did something (don't remember what) and said it cost $150 and insurance didn't cover it.  One time as I left his office, his schedulers were not at the desk and I just walked out.   I developed an abscessed tooth (not his fault but mine for waiting so long) and told Norm I didn't know what to do because I did not want to go back to that dentist.  Norm had just sold a car to a dentist who had been a student of our dad's and suggested I call him.  I did and he took new patients and I am still with that practice some 40 years later.  The original dentist died, but his replacement is my present dentist and I like him.

Norm and Dot ended up going to him too.

Larry, in about 15 minutes I can begin watching golf.

Marilyne, sort of.  we have a couple of cooler days <low 70's> and then along come a 90 plus day and then a couple of cooler days, etc.   Is like mother nature just cannot make up her mind.  Yes, I put my comforters away also.  Only good thing about this crazy weather is that it is keeping my electric bill down.  LOL

angelface555

Good morning from an overcast and muggy Interior. I woke up about 11:30 last night and the thermostat said 84 inside and 80 outside. This morning with just the screen door to the balcony, we are at 82 inside. We are at plus 81 outside while the airport's high says we're at 68.

My balcony and bedroom window face Northwest, are recessed four feet and are screened by the four birch in front. The birch branches are so close that they're touching my bedroom window and scratch against it during periods of wind. You can walk down many streets here and go from one extreme to the other depending on how many streams, creeks, ponds or rivers are nearby. Thunderstorms are expected today and tomorrow.

Farrah is planted in front of the balcony screen door as the robins, sparrows and other small birds are talking, along with pigeons and gulls. Between the birds, railroad whistles and construction, it is noisy out there but too hot inside without the fresh air.

One thing I've wondered about but never asked is folks here talking about leaving doors or windows open at night. I would never be able to sleep wth a door or window open. When I was renting rooms in a house by the college, I was concerned about the owner leaving her door unlocked even though we all had keys. Her rational was that if they're going to break in, why destroy her door or property to do so? My rational after meeting odd people in the downstairs hallway during the night was that she was crazy and I needed to find a new apartment!

This is a city not known for violent crime, but property crime is high and rising be it drug or alcohol related. Mail theft is a constant in the outlying areas and break-ins are common, yet folks leave their cars and homes unlocked.

Mary Ann - Goodnight to you too, and also goodnight to joan, Larry and Patricia.  I think the five of us are the only ones who posted here today?  I hope we have a bigger showing tomorrow! :)

MarsGal

Larry, the pork loin was delicious. I have plenty to eat on for a few days, plus the broth which I am using to make soup with Ramen noodles (I never use their little flavor packets.) Now, I have the urge to buy another loin to try barbecue pork. The loin cooked a lot sooner than I expected. The only thing I need to be careful with that the pot liner is heavy even without anything in it.

Angel, when I was a youngster, I remember it was not uncommon for the doors to be unlocked. However, that is mostly a thing of the past around here now. After my ex and I moved into a new housing development in a more rural area, we discovered that there was a lot of theft reported in the area. I haven't left my doors unlocked ever since, except for when I am in the yard and in line of sight of the door.

This morning I hope to get down to the back of the yard and spray a poison ivy plant that escaped my attention the last few years. It has been quietly growing up my back wall by the alley (on the alley side) for the last few years it looks like, hidden among other weeds. I've been waiting for dry weather for a few days and no breeze.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, we seldom locked doors when I was young.  If my mother left the house, she would tie a hanky to a key and put it on top of one of the pillars on our porch - in full view of anyone coming on the porch.  None of our neighbors locked their doors, either.  I guess "them days is gone forever".

When I am alone now, all doors are locked.

Hi everyone.  The morning is starting out overcast and it is suppose to be partly cloudy all day long.  However, it really won't keep us much cooler as we will reach 90 degrees again this afternoon.  We expect this to be our usual Sunday with Sunday School and Church and then going somewhere for lunch or picking up something to bring home to eat.  I plan on having a Facetime conversation with my best friend later this afternoon and then watching the conclusion of the golf match.

Carol, I read that about the Senator saying because the man believed in Christ he wasn't qualified for the position in Government.  Can you imagine what would have happened in this country if this Senator had been elected President.  Isn't it nice that there are still Chapels in hospitals with our "political correctness".  Is there still a cross in that VA chapel?    I really enjoy watching the golf matches and like that there isn't usually a lot of sustained noise.

Mary Ann, I have faced that issue about whether to have a crown or one more repair.  Ultimately I have had to have the crown.  There is no need to possibly have to endure a lot of pain if it can be avoided.  I always give a sigh of relief when the dentist says no new problems seen after a cleaning.  That has been my case the last couple of times and it made me a happy person.  It looks like the golf should be good and competitive this afternoon as a number of players are in contention for winning.

Joan, we sure haven't been able to keep our electric bill down as have had to A/C for several weeks.

Patricia, temperature readings can sure vary around an area.  We are almost always a few degrees higher than what the weather apps indicate.  Hope your thunderstorms are not extremes.  We never leave our doors unlocked while we are in the house or away.  These are not the times like when I was growing up and no one locked their doors and I don't ever remember hearing of a robbery, although sure there probably were some.  It is sure a different society living in a city of any size.  It does sound like the Intapot is a very useful appliance and would be good for limited storage spaces since it could replace several other appliances.

MarsGal, glad your pork loin turned out so well.  Those ceramic inserts in the crock pots are very heavy.  I remember we used to have one that the insert did not come out and it was a pain to wash up as had to be careful about the electrics and not getting them wet.  We now live in a very quiet neighborhood that is really off the beaten path but we still keep our doors locked and our cars in the garage.

Marilyne, I think we are in the same situation of not really needing another new appliance.  However, I am not mentioning the Instapot to Pat as she might change my mind.  :) We really don't have room for anymore appliances that won't fit on an upper shelf.  I think dentists have a saying that they will either get us now or we will get you later.  I have decided to keep a regular dental schedule and avoid as much future destruction of my teeth as possible.  I sure don't want to have false teeth.

Sandy

Good  Morning, Every One from
the hot  and Sunny , rocky coast of Maine.

It is going to be "AC" weather for the next
three days,  then drop to more pleasant
cooler weather.    Hopefully the humidity will stay
lower, as low humidity makes all the difference
in the world, comfort wise.

Tomorrow's CAST OFF day, for me.    (Hopefully)
But of course, at this age,  some times
healing takes longer :coolsmiley:

Fingers crossed!
Have a good Sunday, everyone!

Sandy

Hello from London Ontario. There is a heat warning in effect for the entire province today;I hope the studio doesn't turn off the A/C for the weekend.

halkel

Larry, I have a cleaning scheduled Tuesday and a front tooth I think has lost some of the filling.  I may ask Maggie, my dentist, about just putting a crown on it so I can at least starting eating corn on the cob again.  I have insurance that will pay half the cost, anyhow, I don't like spending money that well, but, what the heck it is only money and the kids can earn their own.

Marilyne

I'm envious of all you folks with the warm/hot summer weather.  Still chilly here in Northern CA, with temps dropping to 45 again last night.  The sun is shining this morning, but the wind is sharp and cold, and blowing hard.  I think it's supposed to hit 62 today, but the wind will continue.

Larry, I agree that's it best not to mention the Instapot to Pat! ;D I was so tempted when I was reading all about it on Amazon.  I managed to control myself, when I stopped and remembered how little I cook, and also, the description of the pot made a point of saying that it was very heavy.  I can't handle "heavy" anymore.  However, it is something to keep in mind for younger family members, when Christmas rolls around again.

Lindancer

Good early afternoon, cloudy but going into the 90's they say.

Marilyne, I should not have check out the Instapot, as I order one suppose to arrive to morrow.  I use my crock pot a lot, If I am not happy with it, I can give it to my DIL for Christmas.  the man across the street who lost his wife last year, is raving about it, said he uses it to do most of his cooking.

Larry, I think we still have a chapel in our hospital. I too, will be watching golf this PM. As for my teeth, at 93, I told my dentist I want to go before my teeth. So he had better keep them in good condition.  He just laughs.

MaryAnn and Patricia, Taffy meets me at the door, talking a mile a min. when I have been out.  Just like a dog.

Good morning from a wet, soggy, hot Interior. The thunderstorms arrived sometime last night and now it is a constant downpour. Farrah is sitting in her chair watching the rain and at 8:11 AM, there is very little light.

People in the Soda Shop and other places spoke of leaving their screens or windows open while they slept and I've never understood that. In 1966, my family's home was robbed while we were up the Yukon and there was a lot of senseless vandalism. In 1973, my apartment was broken into and several items stole while I was at work. They entered through a window by slipping it off its fittings.

When I lived in a 6 story building, in 2004, there was a guy that often climbed up, using other's balconies to get to his apartment. I never understood why but I always kept my doors locked and my curtains closed. He was the landlord's brother-in-law so complaints didn't matter. Then I read an article about the Zodiac killer who said people locked their doors but seldom locked the inside door from the garage to their homes. He also said he often came through unsecured doggie doors.

I like the Instapot, it allowed me to donate nine other appliances but if you do not cook, it is a waste of money. I generally have two big cooking days a month and freeze most of it so this works for me. People who still cook a lot or do canning or preserving would benefit from this, or those with families that they regularly cook for. With my food allergies, I cannot eat convenience or processed food and that means cooking. I remember the last time I went into analeptic shock and no thank you, no more!

Gloria, hello! I wish Farrah was like your Taffy. The only thing she seems concerned about when I arrive is what animal I've been around behind her back and did I bring treats? She is affectionate but the alert wariness is always there just in case.

I hope everyone, everywhere has a great day!

Jeanne Lee

And now the French Open tennis tournament is over.  I'm very limited for the channels available for watching live, but did get to see the ladies final yesterday and the men today.  the ladies were dull...  no aggression at all, it was like watching a couple of friends playing a couple of friendly sets at the municipal courts.  They never even seemed to perspire!  But the men really fought it out, even though Nadal took Warwaski in straight sets it was exciting.  Now for the next grand slam - Wimbledon in July.

Marilyne, we were 47 degrees last night.  Only in the low 60's right now at 10.  Supposed to be low 70's later today.

Hi Jeanne.

Joan, I'd gladly share some of our heat with you.  My thermometer says it is 92 degrees outside my window, but it registers heat between this building and the garage so I think some heat is trapped.  Even so, it is in the high 80s.

Jeanne Lee, I never played tennis and have no knowledge about it.  I started watching golf because there was almost nothing else on TV.  So I am watching the 4th round of a PGA tour at Memphis TN.

Patricia, I do leave my bedroom window open at night but I am on the second floor.  I won't say someone could not reach my window, but I think they'd have to have a ladder as the supports for the deck set in quite a way.  Tom does have his window open and he is on the ground floor.  A lot depends on which floor a person sleeps.  It's a strange world we live in these days!

Kendrick usually meets us at the door but he is hoping we will let him out the front door.  Sometimes I will put him on the deck if I'm going to the mailbox.  He does respond to "NO" so I can get in the door.

Many people are on the beach at Grand Haven and some in the water.  Water temp is 64 degrees and air temp is 72 degrees.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, thanks for the offer to share your heat, but I have a feeling that Mother Nature has some of those 90's plus for us soon.  In the meantime I am saving on my electric bill.  LOL

Marilyne

joan - We're saving on the electric because of no need for AC, but there has been a need here the past couple of mornings to turn on the heater. I don't think we have ever turned on the heat, this late in the season, but the chill inside the house is just too much for these old bones. The weather people are saying this sharp dip in temperatures, is because of a cold front coming down from the Gulf of Alaska.  I'm back to digging into my stored winter clothes, for sweaters and corduroy pants.

The good news is that things will start to warm up on Tuesday, and by Friday we will be in the 90's!

wjoan

Marilyne, this is very unusual for us this time of year also.  i  usually leave one sweatshirt and one pair of heavy pants, just in case.  :)

Mary Ann

Joan, I am not saving on my electric bill because when it gets to be 80 degrees in the house, I turn on the air.

Marilyne, while I haven't turned on the heat, it has been cool enough to do so.  It warmed up soon enough that I could open doors!  But 71 degrees inside is just a bit too cool.  I have been known to turn on the heat - just a week or so ago!

Well, I have kinda expected this so it came as no great shock when Candy informed me today she is leaving Ark. in August. She has her Itinerary all figured out..  My Aunts would call it 'wander lust'

Marilyne

joan- I remember when Candy drove to Arkansas . . . not too long ago?  Do you have any idea where she's planning to go?  It sounds like it would be fun to travel around, until you find the perfect place to settle down.

I'm still freezing here - cold and windy, with a few hailstorms.  Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder, and then will slowly warm up.  Daughter Sandy came over tonight to do some laundry, and then stayed for dinner.  She was complaining of a sore throat, and thinks she's getting a cold. No one is prepared for this unseasonable weather, so cold season will probably return :tickedoff:

wjoan

Marilyne, yes she told me but for now I think I will just keep it to myself.  Candy is well known for changing her mind.  LOL

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  It is an overcast morning and will be cloudy all afternoon with only a 20% chance of rain.  Yesterday at Church we had a commissioning service for the eleven members of our Church that will go to Boliva on a mission trip.  This is the 32nd year for them to go and this year is a building year and they plan on putting in a wooden floor for the church that has been built by missionaries in the past.  They also hold a Bible School for the children.  Where they are going is over eleven thousand feet above sea level.  I would have great difficult breathing at that height.

This should be one of the lighter weeks on my calendar in sometime.  No appointments and only a plan to go to coffee on Thursday and a meeting on Saturday.  I just got in from hooking up one of the hoses for the summer and washing off our front porch under the birds nest.  Those little birdies have been very busy the last couple of days doing what birds do and left a lot of little deposits.  While outside I grabbed my hedge shears and trimmed off the tops of the three little bushes on either side of the walkway and driveway.  Last year these little jobs would not have tired me but it sure did this morning.  I do plan on a quick trip to Aldi's later this morning as we need several items.  However, that may have to wait until after I rest this afternoon.  I also need to fix some sausage muffins later today.

Sandy, sure hope you will be cast free later today.  Stay cool.

Hal, I like your attitude on your money.  Pat and I feel the same way.  It is nice to be able to eat ear corn on the cob.

Marilyne, I agree on heavy.  We recently bought some Corelle dinnerware as remembered it being relatively light weight but it is still heavy for me as I am not very strong anymore.

deAngel, I will be anxious to see your response on how heavy the Instapot is as I may have to change my mind as we need whatever tools will make meal preparation easier for us.

Patricia, we also had a home break in during daylight houses some years ago as had a couple of windows in our garage and had left one of them up to help the heat escape from the garage.  Since then I have never been comfortable leaving windows open as the houses today have very low windows.  I do have to admit we hadn't locked the door from the garage to the house.

Joan, 70's are a very nice temperature.  We will be in the mid-80's today and that is better than the 90's.

Mary Ann, during the hot season when I was growing up you had to leave your windows open to get some breeze but never heard of a problem.  I wouldn't even consider it anymore.  We seem to have few days down here where having a window open would be comfortable.

Mary Ann

Larry, in the 60s and early 70s, I had a cottage and went there every summer weekend.  Of course, my house was locked up tight in my absence.  When I would get home on Sunday evening, the house was hottern Hades.  I was comfortable at the cottage, but not at home because I worked during the week and the house never did cool off.  That was one motivation to sell the cottage.  By this time my dad had died and that was the reason the house was locked up all of the time.  I could leave my bedroom windows open (second floor) but that didn't help downstairs.

From there I moved to a ranch house and I did not like to leave the windows open at night and I did not have air.  That didn't prompt my move to the condo but it was/is a relief that I can leave a window open if I want to.  Our temperature today is near 90 degrees and windows and door are closed to keep the coolness in!

Tom and I just returned from Subway where we had lunch.  For beverage, I get a Sprite and when he went to top it off as we left, Tom put in some pink lemonade.  It didn't affect the taste!

Tom and I do not exchange opinions on religion or politics, but I did give him my opinion about something today.  He happened to agree with me on that point, but usually has a reason to explain whatever point I make.  Which is probably why we don't discuss either.  I do not think quick on my feet anyway.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Larry, an afterthought.  When I am in Indps, I attend the Irvington Presbyterian Church - Jim's church, also his son Tom's.  Each year that church sends maybe a dozen members to Mexico to build houses - one each year.  Tom H has gone for several years and a couple from Scotland, friends of the minister, fly to Indps to join the group.  They have a good time, make some friends, and do good work!  The group has stayed in both the US and Mexico.

Mary Ann

Carol

We had to visit two grocery stores today to find fixings for the baking I am going to start - treats for tomorrow's quilting group.  Apparently, it isn't normal for people to bake anymore..... more than a little irritated at the herding of everything in our lives.

Radioman:  Do hope you have something to cool off when you work this weekend.

Severe weather warning this afternoon.  that will cool off the house.  We have underground power so we have never lost electricity - so far.

On our news - there is a new way to track rattlesnakes (if you care) and the scientists are putting trackers on the snakes & apparently letting them go.  Hmmm gotta think about that!

On the subject of protecting a house - my parents (in Seattle) had been robbed numerous times.  When we drove out to visit, I went through the house to check out any dangerous things.  I found a bear trap in the basement under the window and it was set to trap anyone climbing into that space.  Also, I found a loaded rifle under their bed.  Can you imagine?  We had four inquisitive children with us -
