Mary Ann

We had rain again last night and it looks as if we'll have more today.  What we had yesterday morning was one inch but we need more.

I just looked at Grand Haven and saw lots of whitecaps.  Water temp is going down so I don't expect many swimmers these days.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is a cloudy morning and a little bit ago we had a very brief rain.  There is a small chance of further rain today and a better chance of rain tomorrow.  I found out early this morning why my foot doctor prescribed some pain pills as one of my big toes started having very sharp and throbbing pains.  I was very slow getting started this morning but finally got my shower and medicated and put the dressings on my big toes.  It is going to be a quiet day as think the antibiotic I am taking for a week is leaving me more exhausted than normal.  Pat plans a quick trip to Aldi's this morning and I plan on resting and watching college football this afternoon and evening.  I am hopeful I will feel up to attending Church tomorrow as we are having a special guest organist.  He is the principle organist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir but I won't make that decision until in the morning.

Mary Ann, no the toenails will not grow back in for which I am thankful.  Ingrown toenails can sure be painful.

deAngel, we have also had the problem with grocery stores moving everything around.  It is very annoying.  Actually, the procedure for removing the toenails turned out to be totally painless.  As with any type of surgery there is likely to be some pain but, as I said above, sure glad we had filled the prescription for the pain pills as it pretty well took care of the pain this morning.  I think it is probably pain related to where the shots were put in to numb my toes or the nerves regenerating.

Marilyne, my condolences on the loss of your brother.  Even though the death isn't unexpected we still suffer from the loss of our loved ones.  That was a very nice picture in Facebook and also nice to have a face to go with your name.

Mary Ann

Larry, after asking if your toenail would come back, I thought I had asked a foolish question because I remembered when I shut a storm window on a fingernail, the nail eventually split across but the more nail did come back.  Evidently that doesn't work with toenails.  I suppose the bed of the nail will harden so you won't feel the loss of the nail.

I'm late in getting dressed so I will head in that direction in a few minutes.  It looks like it will be a nice day now that the rain has passed.  I just looked at the radar and while it is clear overhead now with the sun shining, rain is over Lake Michigan so we probably will get more.  We'll take it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Thank you to, Gloria de, Sandy, Patricia, Mary Ann, Callie, FlaJean, MarsGal and Larry,  for your kind words and condolences on the passing of my brother.  I know that many of you have been through far worse, in your families, and my heart truly goes out to you.

The usual lovely October weather is here, and it will likely stay for the remainder of the month.  I woke up early this morning, made coffee, and then sat and enjoyed the peacefulness of watching the sun rise over our Eastern foothills.  It will be a nice day, and I hope to get a few thing done that I've neglected in recent weeks.  AJ is already out in the back yard with his weed-whacker and lawn mower, so that's a good start on the day.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I asked Tom to send me your picture with your brother; Tom is on Facebook and I am not.  I couldn't figure how to bring up your site, so asked Tom to do it.  It is nice to put a face to the posts - nice looking, both of you.  Now I'm trying to figure how to save the picture to my files.

Marilyne, I am sorry for the loss of your brother.  I know it must hurt a lot, especially since you were close.  Your memories of the good times will help you through this.  Blessings to you and yours in this sad time.

Marilyne, so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother.  I only had two brothers & lost both of them, so know the pain and sorrow you are going through.  Sending hugs and lotsa love to you.

shirleyn

Marilyne

shirley and Sue - Thank you for your kind words.  You have both lost loved ones, so you understand the sadness. I'll be glad when this year is over.  Many dear friends and relatives gone in 2017.

shirley - I know you will mourn your son, forever more. We have three friends who's adult children passed away this year.  Losing a brother or sister is bad, but a child would be unbearable.

Marilyne, not only did I lose a son, but lost a daughter 13 years ago.  The daughter was to a brain aneurism, which I could accept.  But my son's was self inflicted, which I am still finding hard to accept.

Someone asked me about how Candy is doing.  Haven't said much cuz not much to say.  The noise that has been plagueiing her since last jaunt home from OR was diagnosed yesterday and it is just a wheel alighnment needed.  She is getting off cheap this time.  They told her that all was fine except for that.  She had visions of it being the transmission.  Glad it is not.
Please try to ignore my spelling, just too much to go back and correct

Marilyne

shirley - I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter.  You've had more than your share of pain and heartbreak.  Do you have any other adult children?  Seems to me I remember you mentioning a daughter and some grandsons?

joan - Sounds like Candy is doing okay in Santa Cruz?  Fall is beautiful weather along the California coast, as I'm sure you already know.  Is she looking for a job there?

wjoan

Marilyn, she used to live there some years ago.  She is happy  there.  Her and her sister are both over 62 so no, she will not be looking for work.  They are in the process of finding a larger place to live right now.

Mary Ann

We are having an honest-to-gosh rain now, the first in a long time.  My plants will love it.  We are looking for something to put on my marble table before I bring the plants inside.  We;ve had a couple of nights at 40 degrees but tonight it will be in the 50s.  Our high today was 80 degrees.

I've said often that Tom brings back more spicy things when he shops for groceries.  That is what he likes - and I don't.  I hit the jackpot the other day when he brought back a huge tossed salad for me.  The label says it serves one person.  Tonight I had my second serving and I might finish it off tomorrow, however, there is enough for two.  Then he brought back a carton of Panera's broccoli-cheese soup (but from the grocery deli) and also a couple containers of Campbell's soup.  That ought to keep me going for a few days.

Hi Everyone.  It is a cloudy Sunday morning and have a 90% chance of rain this afternoon.  We will be leaving for Sunday School and Church in just a few minutes so will be very brief this morning.  I had a good night and had no toe pain yesterday.  No shortness of breath this morning other than the usual.

Mary Ann, I put on my regular shoes for just a few minutes yesterday and had no problems and now have them on to wear to church this morning.  I can always slip them off during the service if my toes start hurting but I don't think they will.  The sore places seem to be where the deadening shots were placed at the end and around my nail.

Marilyne, glad you are finally getting some nice October weather.

Joan, glad to see that Candy is doing well and her car needed only minor attention.

Many of us share the experiences involved with losing children.  We do survive because we must go on living.  It accomplishes nothing if we stopped living due to sadness. We each deal with grief in our own way and time.

I am not ignoring anyone today by not responding to each but just don't have the time left this morning.

Marilyne, yes a I have a daughter and a son left.  Of course I do not see them too much in this busy world, but they do both live here in Florida.

Joy

Marilyn,  I, also, send you my sympathy on the loss of your brother.   And, I did see the nice picture of you both.  Like Larry mentioned,  it is always nice to be able to put a face with a name.  I hope that all the good memories you had with your brother, will be a comfort to you.

Larry,  hope your toes are feeling a lot better today.  I didn't have my toenails removed, but I had hit both of my big toes a while back and the nails finally came off on their own.  It has been a while ago, and they have not grown back, so I am just assuming that they won't now.

I had a nice day yesterday.  My daughter-in-law and I went to a wedding for a great-niece.  It was a beautiful sunny, warm day.  Really sweet young bride and a very nice young groom.  It was not a very big wedding, and only the aunts and a couple close cousins were invited.  Nice that we all were able to sit together and we all had a really nice time.

It is not a very nice morning outside my window and rain seems to be in the prediction.  We really need the rain, as everything is so dry.  It was so nice for the past week, and I think they are predicting for nice weather to return by the middle of this week.  It actually got up in the 90's one day.  I sure am not looking for those cold, wintry days, so I did enjoy the beautiful weather.  I can take a couple rainy days if I can look forward to a few more warmer days. However, I do know the cold weather is  bound to show up.

Mary Ann,  hope you and Dot will enjoy your early Sunday morning lunch.  I think it is so nice that you both live close by and can still enjoy getting together. It is always nice to have something to look forward to every week.

Hope all the friends will have a nice Sunday.

Joy

BIG BOX

Marilyne

Mary Ann - You and Dot are probably enjoying a sandwich at the Cholesterol Pit, right about now?  It's just 8:15 AM here, so would 11:15 there, and almost time for lunch.  I would love to have one of those tuna melts.  As you know, I had good luck with your recipe, and it was delicious . . . but I would rather just sit down in a booth, and have someone else prepare it and serve it to me! :D

Joy - Nice that you were invited to the small wedding of your great-niece.  I haven't been to a wedding in a long time?  I enjoy them so much, but all grandchildren, (except two), and nieces and nephews are married, so I don't think there will be anymore family weddings for a long time.  My youngest daughter has never married, but if that should ever happen in the future, I think she would choose to have just a private ceremony.

shirley - Good to hear that you have a daughter and son, who live fairly close to you.  Our son and family are only a couple of miles away, but they all work, and are very busy on weekends and holidays.  Older daughter lives quite a ways from us, in the Central Valley area of CA, so we only see them on holidays and special events.  Youngest daughter lives close, so we see her once a week.  She usually comes over on Monday, does her weekly laundry, and stays for dinner.

Larry - My father had one of his toenails removed, when he was in the Navy, during WWII.  It did not grow back, and I have to admit that it looked weird! LOL!  It didn't bother him in the slightest, and he never had a problem with the other toe.

Mary Ann

Dot and I did not have our weekly brunch this morning.  We had a guest minister this morning who talked and talked and talked; I thought he'd never quit!  It was nearly 11:30 when we got out of church and by that time I did not feel like going out to eat, so we came home.  I told Dot the next time we made it to the Cholesterol Pit on my money, we would have a Tuna Melt and a cream pie of her choice.  We missed last week and now this week.  So, sorry, Marilyn, we were not eating when you wrote.

Joy, nice that you could go to the wedding.  I hadn't been to one in years but last summer I was invited to the wedding of one of the Indps quads and had a good time.  If there is a second wedding of the group, it might be here in GR because one of the male quads has a girl friend from here, although she is working in Indps now.

Larry, I hope you have been comfortable with your regular shoes on this morning.  If your feet hurt (or back), so does the rest of you.

We have sunshine this morning and our temperature is in the mid 60s, very comfortable.

First preliminary snow of the season is happening now. But if it follows procedure, and this is questionable anymore, it will melt and we will get an actual stay on the ground first snow, about two weeks later.

Special Weather Statement
Weather Updated: Oct 08 4:20PM
Issued by the National Weather Service
For Middle Tanana Valley, Alaska
SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT UNTIL 6AM AKDT MON ...SEASONS FIRST SNOWFALL TONIGHT... ...SIGNIFICANT SNOW POSSIBLE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT... SNOW IS NOW FALLING ABOVE 2500 FEET IN THE FAIRBANKS AREA WITH RAIN OCCURING AT THE LOWER ELEVATIONS. THE SNOW LEVEL WILL FALL VALLEY LEVEL AT FAIRBANKS BY LATE THIS EVENING. MOST OF THE SNOW THAT FALLS TONIGHT IN FAIRBANKS WILL MELT AS IT HITS THE GROUND, BUT THE HILLS AROUND FAIRBANKS COULD SEE 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW TONIGHT. A MORE SIGNIFICANT SNOW FALL IS EXPECTED MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT. FAIRBANKS COULD SEE 2 TO 4 INCHES OF WET SLUSHY SNOW, BUT THE HILLS ABOVE 2000 FEET COULD SEE 4 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW.

Mary Ann

Patricia, the Weather Channel forgets about Alaska much of the time but they did mention that Denver is to get snow within a day or two.  It can wait forever for here as far as I am concerned.  Today has been lovely and at nearly 10 pm, the temperature is 63 degrees.

Mary Ann

halkel

Mary Ann, we haven't had snow on the ground here in San Antonio since January 1985, then we had 13.5 inches.  Lasted one day.

:)

angelface555

MaryAnn, at 6:58, we still have sleet and it is plus forty-one.

Hal, I left San Antoine and Ft. Sam for a 14-hour flight home on January 13th, 1973 and almost didn't make it out for loads of sleet and white slushy ice.

Joy

Good morning on this rainy, dreary, windy morning, here in Central Maryland.

Patricia, like Mary Ann mentioned,  our weather people never mention about the weather up your way, but I did hear this morning about some snow in Denver.

We will have another warm day, although with the wind and rain, it won't be a very pleasant day.  A good nap day.

Mary Ann, I just looked at the Lake webcam and it looks like such a beautiful, serene morning.  Hardly any waves and the sun was making an appearance. I notice that they don't seem to be working on the big pier anymore.  But, it did look like there were people either working or just walking along the shorter pier all the way at the end.  Have you heard or read anything about them rebuilding the upper walkway??  I did see a couple kayakers out yesterday and the weather didn't look very nice.  It did say this morning that the water temp was 65º.

Hope all the  "bait and tackler's" will have a great day.

Joy
BIG BOX

Mary Ann

Joy, I just looked at Lake Michigan and it is an hour after you posted.  The sun is in the East and I think the picture is more clear when the sun comes from the East.  I haven't read where they have finished the pier yet, but there is pier out of the picture, too.

The catwalk needs more money to complete it, to even start it and it might be another  year before that happens.  Most everyone wants it, but funds are scarce.

Hal, if 13.5 inches of snow disappeared in a day, it would seem to me some creeks might have risen temporarily.  That's a lot of snow.  Our area averages about 72 inches a winter and that could be over a five-month period (November through March).  We've had traces in October and April, but not often.  Since I'm retired, I can stay in when/if necessary.

Patricia, I do not like your weather at all.  I've driven in such conditions.  The last 13 years of my working, I drove (or rode) on the Expressway.  The City and County keep the limited access roads pretty well salted in such conditions and there are few accidents.

A former neighbor who now lives in Tennessee sent me some pictures of a bad accident she was in.  Looking at pictures of her car, I wonder how she survived but both she and the other driver had few injuries.  Both vehicles were totaled.  I don't know how the accident happened.

I guess this will do it for a while.  Our temperature is in the mid 50s and the sun is shining - a beautiful start for the day.

Hi Everyone.  We had some really good and soaking rain yesterday, low chance today and a much better chance tomorrow for more rain.  I think the antibiotic I am taking because of my toenail removals is really doing a number on me in terms of just wanting to sleep and feeling very tired.  It was 9 am before I got to the kitchen this morning, almost unheard of as I usually get up early.  Fortunately it is a stay at home day.  Pat already got out and went to the lab to have a blood draw in preparation for her appointment with the doctor on Thursday.  I will probably post late tomorrow as have a 9 am appointment with the eye doctor to start the cataract removal process.

Joy, my toes are doing fine.  I was able to wear my regular shoes all of yesterday morning without discomfort.  I still have to doctor them twice a day and change the dressings for a few more days but they are looking better everyday.  They almost look like they have been painted red, a first for me.  :) It sounds like you have had some really nice weather but not so nice today.

Marilyne, you sound like my wife as she likes to got to places to eat where they wait on her and she doesn't have to go through an order line, although we do that on occasion.  Not having the big toenails will not bother me in the least.

Mary Ann, I wonder why ministers and other speakers don't realize that we may turn off our listening after a reasonable period of time.  We also had a fairly long service yesterday and a different ending of our service as we were asked to sit down after the benediction and our very special guest organist played a Bach piece that was fabulous.  What a wonderful and moving piece of music played so brilliantly.  I didn't know our pipe organ had some of those sounds. It sounds like you and Dot could go into withdrawal from not getting to the Cholesterol Pit.

Patricia, it seems so early to be getting snow.  It was hot and very humid here yesterday.  It was so unpleasant outside that Pat and I decided not to eat out as we usually do but just came home and found something light to eat.

Hal, it sounds like you all are overdue for a little snow.  We didn't have more than a few flakes last winter and I haven't heard any forecasts for this winter.  We seldom have a day where it doesn't get above freezing if it has frozen during the night.

Mary Ann

Larry, until we get an interim minister, prior to getting a settled senior minister, we are having only one service and that is in the sanctuary instead of the chapel where our 8:30 service is held.  The congregation has remained seated at the end of the service while the organist plays something lively and loud to send us off.  In the chapel, we have not done that as a group, but I know some people have waited until after that last piece is played before they stand up to leave.  I am sure the organist appreciates the attention.

Good morning from a well soaked Interior. I have yet to see any signs of actual snow on some of the closer foothills while some further away always have snow. The alert is still in effect; "...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS
EVENING TO 6 PM AKDT TUESDAY...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions,
including during the morning commute on Tuesday. Total snow
accumulations of 2 to 5 inches mainly above the valley floor,
with localized amounts up to 8 inches above 1500 feet in the
hills north and east of Fairbanks, are expected.

* WHERE...Middle Tanana Valley.

* WHEN...6 PM today to 6 PM Tuesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Look for reduced visibilities at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will
cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow-covered
roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving."

The hills and along one or two of the rivers, just outside of town are where the more substantial and beautiful homes are built, and I know that the school buses always seem to have trouble in the hills and along the rivers so they should be prepared. However, there are still one or two newcomers who never seem to grasp the concept of paying attention to road conditions.

It seems the alerts are mainly for the evenings, yet the sleet and heavy rain has yet to turn to actual snow. I'm not surprised about Hawaii and Alaska not showing up on the radar for most places. Many people refuse even to accept we are a state to this day. When you see maps or read articles about the US, it is always the continental or lower forty-eight states.

angelface555

I hope Marilyne is okay as California has some fast wildfires burning in Napa, Mendocino, Lake and Sonoma counties. They are stretched thin and looking for outside help with extensive evacuations and historic areas burned.

I believe she is on the other side of them.
Hope the grapes are not damaged tho.

Marilyne

Hello everyone - yes, I live in what is called, The South Bay, and all of these horrendous fires are happening in The North Bay.  My sister-in-law, (David's wife), and three of their adult children, live right in the midst of all this chaos, in Sonoma county, Santa Rosa, etc.  I tried calling her this morning, but her cell phone went to voice mail, so I assume she has evacuated?  I'm confident that the kids will take care of her.  The huge Kaiser hospital in Santa Rosa, where my brother was last week, has been totally evacuated.  I also have lots of cousins who live in the many small communities along the Russian River.

It is a real catastrophe up there in Napa and Sonoma, with  acres of prize vineyards burned to the ground, and also a few wineries, and untold numbers of homes.  So far there are no reported casualties, but the fires are still out of control, so there is more ahead.  The dry wind is still blowing, and the humidity in that area is only 9%.

joan - Do you remember the huge Clover-Stornetta Dairy?  I heard that it also burned to the ground this morning.  Not confirmed, so I hope it's not true.
