Good morning from the warm, wet, and snowy Interior! We had warmer temperatures Monday and Tuesday, mid-thirties today and then as usual back to cooler temperatures for the weekend. Since this century began and undoubtedly close before, we have totally changed our weather pattern and lost that severe cold.

I'm here late as it was after five before I finally slept. I brought out the SmartyKat for Farrah, and she is enjoying playing with that for the moment.

Larry, I hope Pat can kick that flu virus, bronchitis, and muscular pain. It sounds as if your area and the rest of the lower forty-eight states is getting walloped by the flu this year. I hope you are staying healthy to care for Pat and not become ill and rundown too.

I had my first and last case of the flu in 1985 with running chills, fever and muscle aches. I had received my first and last flu shot which immediately reciprocated by giving me that full-blown case, so I never had another injection, nor another case of the flu.

I worked for Montgomery Wards locally for seven years and left to work at an import, export shop for twelve years. I  believe that was my favorite job. I did work in a local ceramics shop but only for about six months because my job required being in charge of all the greenware, and I was afraid of dropping and breaking pieces or destroying something someone had long labored over.

My city started and remained as a goldrush mining and supply camp in the mid eighteen hundreds and there is still local family mines and sizeable commercial gold mines in the area. It didn't incorporate until 1903.  Anchorage to the south was established in 1914 as a railroad construction port for the Alaska Railroad, which was built between 1915 and 1923. Ship Creek Landing, where the railroad headquarters was located, quickly became a tent city; Anchorage was incorporated on November 23, 1920. So both cities are actually new compared to many in the lower forty-eight.

Alaska is divided into 19 organized boroughs and one "Unorganized Borough" instead of counties. Our county is the largest, at 7,444 miles and Fairbanks is borough headquarters. My city has just over one hundred thousand citizens, and the county has 99,631  as of 2015. What is scary in all this is that we learned in our emergency preparedness course that the borough only has medical beds for perhaps a tenth of that and in a natural disaster, priorities would play heavily into that.

What I'm getting at is we have a low population, no real statewide road system, and we learned in 2011 how dependent we are without airplanes. We, as a state have the highest percentage of personally owned small aircraft and a sizable military presence. Yet they were grounded. There were climbers on mountains, hunters in camps and expeditions all with no idea of what was going on and not having their scheduled pickup. Canada, which is closer than the US and similar in geography, really stepped up and was there for us during that crisis.

I wouldn't have this state otherwise and by the continual voting down of a statewide road system, I'm assuming others feel the same. It is a huge state borne cost, rescuing people and families who are ignorant and unequipped to head out into the wilderness or into mountains alone.

And the Native population which is a huge voting block would rather these folks stay out of their lands and their administrative costs too. But it would be nice to have a more efficient state and a more efficient retrieval system.

MaryAnn, we do have a number of sports bars here but they are generally part of one of the hotels. We do have several restaurants with outdoor seating areas during the summer, along the rivers; but no white sand or palm trees.   :(

Sandy - Glad your colonoscopy was okay.  I had the same colon surgery as Patricia, so after that, I had a colonoscopy every year for a while, and then went to every five years.  Once I turned 80, the doc said I didn't need to have anymore, unless I have obvious symptoms of a problem.

Mary Ann - I remember you mentioning that pleasant outdoor area at Score. I really like anything beachy or tropical, so I know I would enjoy eating there.  There are some restaurants near me in Santa Cruz, that are right on the beach, with a view of the ocean. My favorite place is up on the wharf, where you get a sweeping view of the entire area, which includes the beach, ocean and the Boardwalk.

I also like the ham and pineapple pizza, but haven't had one in a long time. Whole Foods Mkt., has a fresh Pizza bar, but I've never ordered one there.  They probably have some interesting combinations there, that I'll have to check out.

Gloria - I don't think we have any of the old original ice cream parlors around here anymore?  Lots of the newer ones, plus Baskin and Robbins.  I think B & K is a nationwide chain, but not sure?  There is one called Cold Stone Creamery, that's supposed to be very good, but I've never been there.  I wish I could find a place that makes the old fashioned malted milk shakes, with malt added. They would bring it to your table and pour it into a tall glass . . . then leave the metal container there for you to finish.  I remember being so full after drinking/eating one of  those!  Very satisfying! :D

Marilyne, we have a Cold Stone Creamery here in one of the outlet malls,
it is very popular and is a franchise. Their ice cream is pretty good. They are, however, competing against a popular instate chain that makes their own ice cream on site and allows you to order your own ice cream recipe for a fee.

We were at plus 30 when I got up at ten AM and now are at plus 24. Come on summer, I'm sick of winter!!

Mary Ann

Patricia, you may have a while to wait for winter's end!

Marilyn, we have a Cold Stone Creamery near here but I haven't been there.  Annie worked there f or a while when she lived with us.  We have an outdoor ice cream place near us and we sometimes go down there for ice cream; it's a lot nearer than Cold Stone.  Just as good, I imagine.  Annie also worked for them in Traverse City during the summer when she was off school.

We used to have a creamery near us where Norm and I usually had our supper while Dad worked.  When he found out what we were doing, he quit his summer job so he could fix our supper!  I have an idea we had malted or sodas or such.  I don't remember them having anything but dairy and ice cream products.

I've been getting along OK since my cortisone shot but I still am very much aware of the problem with that shoulder.  Usually the pain is almost nil, but I must have moved the wrong way a few minutes ago and I knew I have a bad shoulder!

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, our winters, such as they now are; hang on until April  >:(  We have three months of summer to nine months of winter. But as someone once said, it was either that or gypsy moths, ticks, fleas, mange, snakes, rabies in the Arctic, and other assorted warm weather pests. And we wouldn't have the different mountains to enjoy and keep the bad weather out!

We just do not have the stores and conveniences that you have in the states. There is online shopping, but shipping costs are prohibitive, up to 33% higher than in the lower forty-eight. That is why Amazon and Prime are everyone's favorite right now!  Pier One is struggling because its prices are so high and a hometown store called "Something Special" has better quality and service, locally owned, and they have all the books where you may backorder china patterns and items similar.

The icy snow along the balcony railings is crystallized, reminding me of what you sometimes see under the microscope. And Farrah has a new game. I purchased a while back, small metal mesh drainers for all the sinks and tub. She has started to bring them out of the bathroom sink and tub to play with them in the living room. I believe she thinks its a game when I put them back!

I decided, last night to do a full-on scan of my 4 T book PC backup and it is now eleven hours and sixteen minutes, and there is still about a third to go!  ???  It will be worth it if it catches a virus or sounds the all clear. Now if it would just finish so I can do my classes!

Good evening, they say driving is dangerous to night after all that rain, I guess the roads are freezing.

Patricia, I saw Taffy playing with something in the living room, I went to investigate and she had my eye drop bottle, it had been on the end table.  Last night she was playing with one of my bamboo  knitting needle. It seems if I buy her a toy, she does not have any interest, even the catnip toy I gave her for Christmas.

MaryAnn, I use to like malted milk shakes.  In the olympia ice cream parlor years ago you could get a chocolate duster ice cream saday, it was ice cream with malted milk dusted on top.  fifteen cents.

Gloria, cats are just like two-year-olds aren't they? Taffy sounds like my Farrah in that they can entertain themselves respectively of any toys!

Britain's national health service put out a survey on what the British thought of it. I guess doctors, lobbyists and drug companies here are simply too greedy.

Patricia, that is interesting about the UK NHS.  I had always thought their service was slow.  I have read that Canada's service is slow, but I think even that depends on what is wrong with a person.

At least they have some satisfied users and I doubt you'd hear that much from US patients, but I think that would apply more to the cost not to the service.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is a cold 21 degrees here this morning but will get into the upper 40's late this afternoon.  We did have snow all morning yesterday but nothing accumulated in our area nor did the roads get slick.  Today will be a sunny day. All I have planned for today besides trying to see that Pat is well taken care of is to go to coffee and then attend the Wisdom group and finally stop to pick up an online grocery order at Walmart.  Pat is really not feeling any better this morning but did get a good nights sleep and had slept several hours during the day yesterday.  I just fixed her a scrambled egg with a little cheese on it wrapped in a tortilla .  In fact I fixed it twice as the first time I put some seasoning on it like she always does but it was too salty for her so we threw it out and fixed her another.

Mary Ann, I think the Sears store is still open in our big Mall although I haven't been there.  It has been years since I went to a movie in a theater and really have no interest in most of the movies available on Netflix or the other services.  If Pat wants to see a doctor or a PA we have a couple of the Prompt Care facilities close by.

MarsGal, it has been a long time since Pat had the flu and refuses to get a flu shot.  I get a flu shot every year and haven't had the flu in many years and sure hope that continues as with my weak heart it would be very dangerous for me and I wouldn't hesitate to seek medical attention.  I hope you didn't get too much snow and don't overdo with that shoveling.  That is what I was doing when I first realized over 30 years ago that I had a problem with my heart.  It was when we lived in Maryland over 30 years ago and we had a heavy snow.  I got part of the job done and had to stop.  Fortunately a good neighbor came over and finished shoveling the driveway.

Marilyne, I think in a few years there will be few of the big name department stores available other than on the web.  All changes are not good or improvements as you said so well.  We still have one of those old type ice cream parlors in our downtown area.  It is called the Pink Dipper.  We had an ice cream cone there after we first moved here but it was extremely pricey and we haven't been back.  I use to love malts as that was what we always had as I was growing up.

Sandy, glad you finished with the hospital before the heavy snow and cold.

Joan, I don't want to get that close to Pat to give her a hug as trying to avoid getting the flu.  She needs to take a shower and wash her hair today and that will wear her out completely.  It tires her a lot when she is feeling normal.

I appreciate all your kind words regarding Pat getting to feel better so if I don't acknowledge that individually it still applies.

deAngel, the consolidation of schools has created huge campuses.  They were building new huge schools in the county we came from as the population was continuing to explode and at the same time closing schools in the Atlanta area due to declining populations.

Patricia, I am trying my best to stay healthy and so far so good.  We had a good friend who had a kiln in her garage and did a lot of ceramic work.  She was a wonderful artist.  She held classes in her home to teach people how to paint ceramics.

Mary Ann

Grand Haven has thin ice out to the outer lighthouse and there is some open water near the shore.  We are to get above freezing in a day or two for several days and all or much of the ice will disappear.

Larry, it's nearly an hour after your post, but we are at 25 degrees at nearly 10 am.

I really don't have any schedule, so I don't know what I'll do today - probably more of the same which isn't much.  I either can't reach something or I have no place to put it, especially when I'm trying to pick up or sort.

Mary Ann

angelface555

Good morning from the Interior where we are in the midst of freezing sleet. We are again to become colder over the weekend and warm up again early next week. It is becoming a habit. Farrah is still bringing the small mesh sink traps out of the bathroom and into the living room while playing. I'm not going to yell at her, just a firm no and take them away. She is like a small kid, getting into everything.

MaryAnn, according to the World Health Association, in 2016-2017, out of the one hundred most developed nations, the US ranks thirty-seventh while Canada ranks thirtyish. The Commonwealth  Fund ranked the U.S. dead last ... poor performance on measures of national health expenditures and administrative costs as well as on measures of administrative hassles, avoidable emergency room use, and duplicative medical testing.

Larry, I'm hoping you and Pat fare better this week than last. And Sandy, stay warm!

Heres to everyone staying warm and healthy! And to stay out of the cold!

wjoan

Larry, I know at my age a shower tires me out a great deal.  Can only imagine what it would be like if I were sick.

Marilyne

Larry - Pat must be feeling a little better this morning, if she is able to take a shower and wash her hair?  It is so tiring for me to shower, even when I'm in good health.  I don't think I would attempt it, or even want to attempt it, if I were running a fever.  Keep us posted on how she is doing?

Patricia - I read some of your recent links on health rankings in the different countries, but haven't read them all yet.  It's a fascinating subject, and makes for a great discussion.  Too bad that it's so hard to have a thoughtful exchange of ideas/opinions on line.

Mary Ann - I just looked at Grand Haven, and it is a true Winter scene!  Not a soul around just now, but I did see a few people walking yesterday.  Like you, I have no schedule today, but will probably go to the library with AJ, to pick up some books we ordered, and then just stay home the rest of the day.  There are some good old black and white movies playing on TCM today, so I may watch one this afternoon.

I can't say I personally have had any problems with the medical people I see.  I might have had a longer wait than usual once in the ER, but usually the wait hasn't been overly long.  What I hear about other countries is what I've read.

Tom and I picked up sandwiches at Jimmy John's today and went to Jan's for lunch.  She is looking good, wears a brace around her waist because of her pelvis break, and is coming along as she should.  She is an RN so knows the routine better than most of us would.  Her parents are OK too, but her father is quite frail.  I had trouble understanding him, but I'll blame my hearing and hearing aids for that.  We were gone 2 1/2  hours, a bit longer than Tom likes, but he participates in the conversation to make the time go on.  I think Jan has been sleeping upstairs in her parents' part of the house and she said she is going to go back downstairs to her own quarters soon.  She and Terry and her folks bought a large house with four bedrooms and two and a half baths so there was enough room for everyone.  Erin is here for two more weeks on leave from her job and Jan's sister is here from Alaska and will be here another week before she returns to her teaching job in Bethel Alaska.  Erin lives in Indps and she is still driving my former car!

Our temperature is 29 and that is misleading with the sun shining because you'd think it was a bit warmer.  The wind keeps the temperature down.

A couple of people are walking on the ice mound at Grand Haven but the thin ice won't last long because within a week we are to be at 45 degrees.

Jeanne Lee, nee Jeanne Alyce Bovee.
Born, June 14, 1932 in Corinth NY, the daughter of Philip William Bovee and Mary V Jalet
Died, January 11, 2018 after a long illness.

Jeanne was widowed twice. She was married to her first husband, Raymond Bernard Corson from November 1951 until his passing in April 1988.  She was married to Eugene Charles Lee from September 1989, until his death in April 2005.

Jeanne is survived by her 3 children,  Kenneth Raymond Corson of Winfield Park NJ, George William Corson of Phoenix Arizona, and Alice Jeanne Corson of Asheville North Carolina, 4 grand children Terry Corson, William Corson, Rachel Wechgelaer and Jacob Wechgelaer, and 2 great grand children, twins, Raymond and David Corson.

Jeanne grew up in Corinth NY and went to school in Corinth until High School, when she went to a Catholic boarding school near Montreal Canada. In a very short period of time she became fluent in French and was a gifted student.  Her major was business where she became fluent in shorthand and was able to type at conversational speed enabling her to become an extraordinarily skilled executive secretary. Upon graduating, she moved to Hudson NY where she met her first husband, Raymond.  She moved with Raymond to Roselle for 3 years, then Clark NJ where she raised her 3 children.  When her children were older, she resumed her career as an executive secretary where she worked in the manufacturing, legal and banking fields.

She eventually moved back to Corinth with Raymond, who also loved the town and people of Corinth where she remained after his death.  She moved again after marrying Eugene but stayed in Corinth.  She continued her career as a secretary in the banking industry until her retirement and was a also popular figure at her position in Town Hall.

Jeanne was a devout Christian and active in the church.  She was also very active in the VFW auxiliary for many years.  She was always interested in both photography and computers.  She was an avid reader and fan of mystery novels.  For more 20 years she was very involved in two web sites, “Senior Net” and “Christian Photography” and assisted in both groups as an administrator.  She loved helping other seniors with internet access, banking, digital photography and loved helping in any capacity, always remarkably patient and generous with her time.  She became quite close to many of the people at Senior Net and was considered by many as family even though she never even met most of them.

She will be missed by both her terrestrial and internet families as well as the many friends she’d made in her 85 years.

Patricia - Thank you for posting the obituary for Jeanne Lee.  I placed a link to your post in Library Bookshelf, as I know there are a few members in that folder who were friendly with Jeanne.

Mary Ann

Patricia, thank you so much for Jeanne Lee's obit; I had not gotten around to e-mailing Ken and I don't know when I would have done it - if I had done it.

It is a lovely obit for a lovely lady.

If you have not put the obit in Soda Shoppe, would you please?  I know there are people there who would be interested.  There may be other folders, but those people can hear about it by word of mouth.  Thanks again.

Thanks, Patricia for posting the obituary for Jeanne Lee.   I am sure she will be very much missed by her family and  all the friends she made throughout her very busy life.  I  really only knew here from the way she helped so many people here in Seniors Net and S & F, and don't think I ever had any special contact with her.  But, I do know that she was very helpful to so many on these message boards.  She has such a friendly face

Joy, and everyone; I never personally met her but dealt with her many times through the past 18 years and she was indeed a lovely lady. And she will be greatly missed, but Bubble and now Larry too will be stepping into her's and Joan's roles.

Shirley

Thank you, Patricia.... I really will miss Jeanne Lee and afraid tears popped into my eyes as her photo scrolled up.  So many of us have been online friends longer than most of the grounded friends we still have to talk to.  We visit here much more than I visit with people I see & can touch, and I have very few friends left that I grew up with.  Each of you mean more to me than you realize.  Patricia, you will always be "my friend in Alaska", living in my life long dream world.  Thanks, again.

Mary Ann

Patricia, thanks for posting the obituary in Soda Shoppe.  There are several, maybe many, people who read only one folder and might have missed the obit if it were not there.

It still stuns me how much I can miss someone I never met face-70-face!

Interesting fact:  My first grade heart throb was Billy Bovee in South Williamsport, PA.  and her father was Philip WILLIAM Bovee.  I wonder if she had a brother!

Thanks Angel for posting the obituary.

By the way, I haven’t seen a post from Beverly in quite a while.  Has anyone heard from her?

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It looks like our really cold whether, for us, is probably over for a few days at least.  We should get up to around 60 degrees this afternoon.   However, she seems to be feeling better this morning and last evening ate a decent meal.   Update:  Just back from the Prompt Care and then going to the Walmart Pharmacy.  The good news is that she apparently doesn't have the flu but just a bad case of bronchitis.  She was given three prescriptionsand the PA said she should begin to feel a lot better tomorrow.

Patricia, it sounds like Farrah is keeping you agile dealing with your small kid type pranks.  She probably thinks you put those mesh sink traps there just for her to play with.  The development of the Prompt Care and local clinics that seem to be happening everywhere must be helping reduce the overload at the ER.

Joan, I was able to help Pat with drying off from her shower.  However, she laid down and slept for about 5 hours afterward.

Marilyne, it was a struggle for her to get into the shower and wash her hair at the same time but she is a very clean person and she would have to be bedfast not to do so.

Mary Ann, glad to see you were able to have lunch with Jan and her family and that she is progressing well.

Patricia, thanks for sharing the obit for Jeanne Lee.  It was a very informative and interesting history of her life.

Mary Ann

Larry, I'm glad to see that Pat saw someone about her condition and it doesn't seem to be as serious as first thought.  I know how it is with her shower.  I have trouble with my right arm, but I do manage.  When/if that arm worsens, I don't know what I'll do.  Tom suggested that Annie help me and maybe we could wash my hair like my mother washed it - in the basin.  My, was that hard to do after she died but I did it for years before I started doing it in the shower.

Yes, Jan is progressing well.  She is ahead of what I had heard or maybe the information was given in a way I misunderstood.  I thought it would be until about now before she'd be home.

Tom is at lunch with a friend so I think I'll fix a croissant and some chicken salad for my lunch.

Mary Ann

JeanneP

Thanks MaryAnn.
I was looking for a Newspaper Obit.  Good  that her son just typed one out and sent it. Everytime I look at that Photo of Jeanne it makes me think of what a Early Pioneer Women must have looked like.  Don't know why. Such a pretty face.
I didn't realize she was 85 did it say. She seems like she had a busy life. Good at everything she did. We will all miss her..

Is your shoulder feeling better? I have to watch using my left one when lifting and reaching high. But for me Advil will still work . Also stopped sleeping in a bra. Done it for 60 years. Also don't think I am wearing the right size as now my one shoulder"right" is lower . That pulls the left strap. I wear a pretty big size. If I leave it off some days it helps.

(Bet the men skip though this posting fast).
