Good morning Mary Ann and Larry :) - Yesterday was spent watching the various Olympic ice events.  I'm not too interested in the snow sports, but anything that takes place inside an ice rink, I like to watch. That includes speed skating, fast track, but mostly the figure skating events like ice dancing, pairs, and of course the individual performances.

We've always had some interested conversations in the Television folder, every time the Olympics rolls around.   Most of those who used to post messages there, no longer do, but I'm hoping to hear from a few of the regulars who still check in?  I remember that Jeanne Lee, used to enjoy the various events, and always had something to say.  I will miss her this year.

Dot and I did not go to church because of the roads, but when Tom got home (he's more daring than we are) he, Dot and I went to New Beginnings for breakfast.  The bill for the three of us was less than $20 and you can guess that Tom was the bigger eater.  Anyway, Tom is driving again and Dot and I are inside our homes where it is not snowing and it is warm.  Our outside temperature is around 20 degrees.  I'm watching the Weather Channel and I get a kick out of how the women are dressed - sleeveless dresses - and where I live there is snow and it is not sleeveless weather!  Our forecast for today is 26 degrees.

Looking at Grand Haven, I can barely see the round and outer lighthouses but I cannot make out the one on the north pier; I can see the end of the pier however.

Good morning from the much warmer Interior! Nothing unusual going on here but the usual, waking up with coffee, feeding Farrah and preparing to do chores. Today a lot of the planned chores will not be done as I am still weary from my earlier illness.

I hope everyone is doing well and feeling better.

wjoan

Larry, she cannot keep me out of trouble.  LOL.  I seem to fall into it  a lot.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I always like the skating, especially the pairs and also some of the skiing.  There has been so much bad news about that awful doctor’s molesting the young girls and also the Russian doping, it has dampened my enthusiasm for all the Olympics.

JeanneP

Mary Ann. The lake sure looks frozen. But it does look like footprints have been walking over it.  It is about as cold here as you are having but the sun is out a little.
Not dressed yet but will soon and see if I can get over to the library. Still have to clean the car off. Hope it starts as not driven it for 3 days. Feels much better staying indoors. Reading. napping. movies. Sure can't get housework caught up. Not bothering me at all.

MaryAnn, glad Dot did not try to drive.I know what you mean about going out with nephew, as he does not have that much money, and can not drive for Uber in NY state, he is license  to drive in Calif. Grand Haven looks cold.
It is very unseasonably warm here and my grandmother always said, there would be a lot of sickness.. Which of course there is, and the obit. column takes up two pages this week in the local paper.

Larry, it does take a while to recover.  You are better off staying at home. they are now saying you can get the flu twice  I think US always does better in the summer Olympic . I am between watching golf and the Olympics.

Jean. I am trying not to even put the news on these day. Check the weather man and that is it.
All this Molesting, wife beating, We have had 4 babies killed by boy friends here in last 3 months. Now in the area a Priest molesting 2 girls under 13. The are allowing him to leave the country. They say same things went on way back but I don't think as bad as they are today. Sometimes I wish TV. computers etc had never been invented. Never hear any good news anymore.
JeanneP

Sasha

Thanks, y’all, for the welcome back.

Mary Ann, I’m fascinated by Kendrick’s way of owning you by owning your bed. I think of you two on your couch every time Mariah butts my hand to make me scratch her.

Three of these cats have developed the habit of lying on what would be my lap if I were sitting down. Not all three at once, thank goodness, but Sadé especially now requires a little quality time. And Java, who’s still a little lightweight, TG, comes to lick fingers.

Wjoan, you and Candy will be friends again when you’re out of each other’s hair. That’s super.

MarilynE, it turns out we’re living in a 19th century culture here, essentially lawless. But I’m sorry I whined last post; I’ll try to do better.

JeanneP, I agree with you about the news. I do look at GMA. and do listen to the local news on the radio before I get up.
I know I am getting myself  in big trouble but some of the women, who wear a dress open to there naval, or a skirt open to you know where, and not expect to get some remark. I have seen women at bars pawing over men, when they have had to much to drink. Again I am showing my 94 years am not trying to take away from the women who have suffered abuse. I believe they are right in coming forward. This just my personal thoughts.

Gloria, I agree with you as to what some women, especially young ones, wear and then are surprised when they are molested.  I don't think that was the case with the MSU and Olympics doctor; he took advantage of them when they were seeking help.  I don't watch women's golf because I don't like their dress code - almost anything goes.  I just wish they's all wear slacks or shorts and no short skirts.

I also don't watch news on TV since the local newspeople verbally trashed the company I worked for, for things that were not their fault.  The stock went way down and the company lost a lot of money and went out of the nuclear plant business.  I do read local and world news on the computer.

Tom did not drive long and just woke up from a nap.  Gloria, it was suggested after he began to drive for Uber that he get a special license (maybe a chauffeur, I'm not sure) and I don't know if that entitles him to Uber in other states or not.  I think he has not driven out of the state, at least not yet.  He has driven to both Detroit and Coldwater at different times.

Whoever mentioned similar temperatures, I think they are not working correctly yet.  At least the time is way off.  I'll check after I post this.  PS - both the time and temperature are incorrect, not even close.

Sasha, Kendrick first comes to me for petting and lies between my knees and hips.  When he has had enough, he either jumps off the bed or jumps over me to get to the mattress-pad-bed I fixed for him.  It is not unusual to find him there at any time during the day.

They're flying kites at Grand Haven.

There is a well know TV evangelist who is blaming the over 150 young gymnast victims for their "immodest" gym clothes and for "behaving immodestly."

Mary Ann

I think often that the participants do not choose their clothes as they are chosen by leaders and the costumes are usually all alike.

I often watch the Weather Channel and while the women are dressed appropriately, their dress is often unusual enough that my eye is on the dress rather than the weather.

I know my age and generation is showing with those statements.

Mary Ann

Joy

Mary Ann,  I, too, have often wondered why the female news reporters dress like it is summertime, when everyone else is freezing.  The only thing that I can think of, is the studio's are probably very warm due to all the lights.  But, sometimes, they really look ridiculous .  Short sleeves or even sleeveless tops.

The lake sure looks so cold.  I can't imagine anyone even wanting to get close to it.

I have the web cam for the Duluth canal with the lift bridge into the harbor and today I was looking at another web cam that is on the same page, and it looked like people were ice fishing on the lake.  They were out too far for me to tell what they were.  They didn't look like tents, but like little sheds.  I watched a couple groups of e or 4 people pulling, what looked like a sled with several duffle bag type things on top.  They loaded everything into pick up trucks or SUV's.
Didn't see any fishing rods or any body with fish, but I think I could make out what did look like several buckets.   Further out on the lake were about 15 or 20 of these "shed-type " enclosures.  Do you think that it would be people ice fishing?   This is Lake Superior, isn't it??

It did look like maybe the sun was shining a little bit.

Mary Ann

Sasha, is Mariah a calico?  My eyesight isn't too good and I really couldn't make her out.

Joy, it is entirely possible that people were ice fishing at Duluth and yes, it is Lake Superior.  You have to realize people who live North, as we do and as they do in Wisconsin and Minnesota, are used to the cold and dress for the weather.  The people fish from inside the shacks and bore a hole in the ice and anchor their lines inside the shacks and drop them in the water.  I'm not a fisherperson, nor is anyone in my family, so I don't have any pictures to display, but I have seen pictures of the insides of the shacks - very primitive with maybe a bench to sit on, maybe only one or two people fishing.  People will drive onto the thick ice with trucks and/or cars and in the Spring if they don't get there soon enough, everything goes into the lake.

Around here, ice fishing is done on inland lakes and there are several lakes in the area.  The fishers get panfish from the inland lakes - bluegills, sunfish, perch and others I can't remember.

Type in "ice fishing" and among the choices is 'ice fishing"; click on that and there is quite a lot about ice fishing.

I copied something from the Ice Fishing site, pasted it, but it didn't take.

Mary Ann[/b][/color]

Joy

Mary Ann,  Thanks for your ice fishing information.   I guess the enclosures they use are something that they can put up and then take down when they are finished.  What the people were pulling , on what looked like a kind of sled.  might have been some kind of a collapsible canvas shelter.  Whatever it was, two people picked the whole thing up and slide it into the truck bed.

I know that people that are used to living in the cold states know how to dress for it.  And, I guess they just get used to knowing just what kind of clothes to wear and how to keep warm.  I feel bad for the people down in the lower states who aren't used to the cold weather that they have been having this winter.  One good thing, theirs doesn't last too long.   I was telling my son yesterday, that I don't remember the last time that our weather has been this cold for such a long period of time.  Now, right now at a little past 9:30, the temperature is almost 60º.   Just a real crazy winter.  I heard the other day, they the counties will probably have to ask for some kind of solution for allowing the schools to have less days than is required.   A lot of them have already used up their snow days and we still have most of February and March to get through.  Liable to be snow around on Easter, since it is so early this year.

I will have to look up some information on the ice fishing.  Wouldn't be something that I would consider doing. LOL  I have been fishing before, when our boys were younger, but not one of my favorite activities.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone
from the cool but clear,  Rocky Coast of
Maine.

Happy Birthday  Larry!

I have been watching the Olympics occasionally
during the day...

I find the commercials much more enjoyable
then the Super Bowl Commercials ....
Just and observation.

I did notice that the people participating
in this Olympics are wearing clothes that
are much tighter,  or appear to be.
I am sure that they don't have a choice.

I try very hard not to fall into the trap of
giving free reign to abusers to continue their
abuse...

Usually the abusers are more powerful then
those that they abuse .... and many times
because of their power,  are allowed to
continue their abuse unchecked until society
takes a stand to nip their abusive ways
in the bud and make the abusers take
responsibility for their actions.

So much for my opinion about abusers
and their victims.

IMHO it is a sad state of affairs for any
society to continue to blame the victims of
abuse.

Have a great day,  everyone...
and enjoy what ever you are doing
today ...

Hi Everyone.  Hi everyone.  Our day is starting out at 61 degrees and headed up into the 70's with only a small chance of anymore rain today.  I actually felt like getting up this morning after spending most of the last two days laying in bed with my eyes closed.  I am thankful for audiobooks and was able to listen to a good one and help pass the time away.  I have nothing special on the agenda and have no plans for my Birthday until Wednesday when we will be able to be with Scott and hopefully Jennifer and her friend will be able to come out.  We do have the Dairy Queen ice cream cake in the freezer that I won and picked up last week when we went there to eat one evening.

Mary Ann, I had hoped to feel up to attending Sunday School and Church yesterday but there was no way I was up to doing so.  That makes three weeks in a row I have missed, something that hasn't happened before since we moved here.  Glad Tom advised you about the roads before you two ladies tried to make it to church.  Glad Tom was able to take you out to New Beginnings  and get you both safely back home.  I think the Weather Channel broadcasts from Atlanta and we had a very nice and relatively warm day here in the South yesterday.

Patricia, those chores will still be there when you feel up to doing them.  I hope you will soon recover from your illness and will be able to enjoy life again.

Joan, maybe that "falling into trouble" is what keeps you young and keeps you going.  Besides it would be pretty dull if everything went smoothly all the time.

Jean, I enjoyed watching the athletes enter the stadium and see the pure job of being there on their faces.  I have to admit I am not particularly interested in the games either but will probably watch some of them since I can see a lot of the actual competition on the iPad or iPhone and not just the highlights.

JeanneP, that housework will be there when you feel motivated to do it.  Glad you enjoy the reading and the movies as well as the naps.  Years ago before the 24 hour news cycle we didn't hear about a lot of the bad things that were going on whereas today it seems almost every bad things is highlighted in the news.  We watch the NBC Evening News and always look forward to their last piece which is something good and right about the country and its people.

Sasha, having three cats must keep you busy and entertained as well.  We had one cat and that was a handful.

Marilyne, I also enjoy the ice skating.  I watched a little of the ice dancing on Saturday evening but didn't feel up to even watching any of it or the golf yesterday.  I may watch some of it today.  I do like the snow events, except for the cross country which is like watching paint dry.

deAngel, I take it your nephew is still staying with you.  Did he bring his car from California when he came East? Too bad he can't do his Uber driving where you are.  When I saw the doctor last week he mentioned he had lost several patients with the flu.  If I have had the flu it has been a strange strain of it since I haven't ached or had a fever just a horrible cough and fatigue.  The weekend was a bit of a setback as had thought I had recovered starting on Wednesday.  I agree with your comments about women's dress.  I remember years ago when I had a young female trainee and we had to make a business trip together that I was very nervous as you cannot prove a negative and while I would never do or say any inappropriate thing if a man is accused he is guilty.  I have never understood how a man could hit a woman or how either men or women can be unfaithful to their marriage vows.  I guess I am old fashioned but I plan on staying that way.

Joy, I often wonder why it is necessary for weather reporters to stand out in the frigid cold or in hurricane weather to do a report.  I understand that TV studios are kept pretty cold because of the equipment, at least that used to be the case.  I expect, as you say, when the lights are all on it does get pretty warm.  I wonder if the people you saw coming from the lake had been ice fishing in those little sheds.

ShirleyN, thanks for the Birthday greeting and I hope to enjoy quite a few more of them in the years ahead.  My cardiologist years ago told me it was his goal to keep me alive until I was 80, which would be only three years from now, but my new cardiologist gives her patients a letter that indicates her goal is to see her heart patients live into their 90's and I feel like I got a new lease on life.  :)  I think I will be staying with the new cardiologist.  She doesn't use PA's or Nurse Assistants and will spend whatever time is needed with each patient.  That is one reason I have no problem waiting on her if she is late for my appointment.

Joy, thanks you for the Birthday wish.  I won't be celebrating today but plan to enjoy our special ice cream cake on Wednesday when our son and granddaughter and her friend can be here to enjoy it with me.  I hope I will be feeling up to going out with the group so that no one has to cook on that day.  I try to enjoy everyday although there have been a few during these last three weeks that don't rank up very high on that scale.

Happy Birthday deAngel.  I had lost track of the fact we share the same date for our birthdays.

Jackie, I did see the beautiful card you left for me in the other discussion but thanks again.

Sandy, thanks for the Birthday wish.  You are right that we can't blame the victims as each person is responsible for their actions, both good and bad.

Sorry about the length of the posting today.  I guess it is obvious that I am feeling better, at least that is my excuse for writing a book.

MarsGal

Good morning all.

Larry, glad to see you have a little more pep today.

Sandy, I noticed your comment about the tighter clothing the athletes are wearing being tight. I think you will find that especially on any athletes competing in events that require speed. The more aerodynamic the clothes are (close fit and type of material) the better for reducing friction which slows things down. Every tiny bit helps to get an edge over the competition, especially when they are closely matched in ability.

My best wishes for a Happy Birthday to DeAngel, Lindancer and Larry.

My sister and her husband have birthdays coming up within three weeks of each other. This year, I plan on taking them to the movies to see Black Panther (opening later this week) and then to dinner at The Macaroni Grill. They are both big movie buffs.

Looks like we are in for a warm-up this coming week. They are calling for 62 on Thursday and next week they predict that next Wednesday will go to 72. Today we are starting to dry out from rain and fog the last two days.

SCFSue

Larry, I am soon to be 81 and had to have a pace maker installed last summer.  My cardiologist says I'm doing great and will make it into my mid-90's before it needs to be replaced.  I'm expecting to live until my late 90's as long as I have a pace maker.  My grandmother lived to be 93 (but had a fall and died at a nursing home).  Her 2 sisters-in-law (my late grandfather's sisters) lived to be 98, but were failing mentally.  I don't want that to happen to me!  If I'm still alive and kicking at 98, I hope I know who I am and where I am!  I spend 20-25 minutes daily walking outside and do a great deal of my yard work.  So if your doctor suggests a pace maker will help, go for it!

Hi Mars Gal.  You must have been writing while I was!

Sue

Mary Ann

Larry, your long post shows you are feeling better.  Keep it up!

Birthday greetings to both Gloria D and Larry.  Years ago my then doctor told me I should live into my 90s.  Well, I have, which surprises me, no end.

Tom is in Holland this morning to attend the funeral of a friend's mother.  The friend's father died a few months ago so it's been a hard time for her.  The friend is one who cleaned for us but she can't now because she has a lot on her plate; her mother's illness was only part of her problems.  Tom will be back after lunch.  It is a workday for him.

Larry, I usually am watching the weather channel about 7 pm and that is when I switch to CBS for the Wheel of Fortune.  The last five minutes of the newscast is always something special about a particular person.  On Friday, Steve Hartman has a segment "On the Road" and I enjoy watching that.  Often he tells about handicapped people who have overcome their adversity.  Or done something very special.

Joy, you are right in saying that we in the cold parts of the country know how to dress.  We all have warm winter coats.  Early on, when working, I had to wait for a bus and one year I had bought a new winter coat - only it wasn't lined warmly and I may have worn that coat once when very cold, but not again!  I now have a down jacket that I bought from Land's End and I wear it all winter.  I don't go anywhere requiring dressy clothes so I am always warm in that jacket.  It is bright red with a hood.  Years ago I knit a stocking cap and when things are really bad, I wear that, otherwise the hood suffices.

Ice fishing is a big thing for some people.  Houghton Lake is in the center of the lower peninsula and I've heard it is covered with ice shacks/shanties all winter for the fishing people.  I think there is a fishing nickname for the lake, like Shanty Town or something on that order.

MarsGal, aren't you from the Philly area?  To think of such warm temps this time of the year!  We may get to the 40s later this week, but the temps will drop down to the 20s shortly after.

Mary Ann
