Mary Ann,

Baltimore is a very old and pretty city.  Lots of history,  beautiful old homes,  beautiful parks,  nice old neighborhoods, great restaurants.   But, sadly, it is more well known for it's crime.  Way up there as one of the worse crime areas in the country.   There is a new chief of police, and hopefully, things will change for the better.

Hi Everyone.  We are expecting another very nice day today with it getting into the mid-80's this afternoon.  Yesterday morning we did go to the Church and meet with the lady heading up the Columbarium committee.  She explained everything to us and we choose the niche we wanted, which will be right next to the plate we are getting on which Stacey's name and birth date and death date will be recorded.  We then stopped at the Sunrise Grill for our lunch and split a huge club sandwich and each had a side of potato salad.  It was a big meal.  After we got home and I rested I installed the new router/modem I had purchased so I could stop renting one from Comcast.  It installed very easily and this stop the monthly fee for the device.

Today I got up fairly early but after my shower and getting partly dressed I laid back down and read from my iPhone as I often do.  I plan on attending a meeting this morning but want to leave early enough to stop by the Comcast store to return the equipment I have from then which I no longer need.  I need to do a couple of chores in the kitchen like clean  and cut up some celery and grate another pound of cheese.  I also need to empty the ice bin.

Mary Ann, it sounded like the Midwest and other parts of the country are in for another major winter storm. As of now we have a 100% chance of rain and possibly severe weather tomorrow afternoon.  I don't remember in previous years the Weather Bureau naming the winter storms and they were usually remembered by the month and year in which they occurred.  I plan on tuning into the golf match at Hilton Head this afternoon and wonder if they will be able to get the round in tomorrow because of the predicted rain.

Joy, several years ago we drove from Georgia to visit my Cousin and his wife who were living in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The day after we arrived they took us on a 13 hour tour around Northern Michigan and we saw some beautiful scenery and did get over to see Lake Michigan.  We didn't make it as far as Duluth.  All of the crime does give Baltimore a bad reputation but know it is like most big cities that the source of the reputation is located in only certain areas of the city.  I have been to Baltimore a couple of times and the harbor area is very nice.  We took a tour of the submarine but can't say I enjoyed it as it was so restricted.  We also visited the Acquarium, which was very enjoyable.

Marilyne, our your temperatures a bit low from what you normally have your area of California?  That is a pretty chilly morning.  I saw a few days ago that several people were proposing that California be split into three separate States.  Our home isn't in a development for Seniors although these patio homes with very small yards are not idea for folks with children.  At our end of the street are either retired people or a couple of single folks.  The Greenway is very nice as it is a paved pathway and many people ride bicycles on it as well as walk on it and for walking dogs.  They still haven't completed the walk under the road project on the frontage road  we access to leave our subdivision.  However, it shouldn't be too much longer.

Joan, you are sure right about the influence of insurance companies.  About everything the doctor's want to do must be approved in advance by the insurance companies.  I know all of this must really be a nightmare for the doctor's.

Larry, our weather forecast for the next two days is for rain and freezing rain.  We were going to have a family get-together today and that has been cancelled.  Erin is here from Indps and I have an idea she is heading back home before the worst hits.  She will be back in two weeks and we'll try again then.

Is the Columbarium where the ashes/remains are put in urns, then in a niche?  My aunt and uncle in Indps are in such a place at Crown Hill Cemetery.  I plan to be cremated, but my ashes will be buried in a container in the ground.  Norm is in such a spot and Dot can be buried (after cremation) in the same lot.

Larry, the Weather Channel has named the storms for a few years and if a storm isn't too important, the name will be used again.  It's just that I have seen the name Xanto used in a weather story not connected with the Weather Channel that makes me wonder if other weather agencies use the names too.  I think they got started naming storms after they began naming hurricanes.

Larry, Duluth is far from Northern Michigan (the UP) and you would have had to go through Wisconsin to get there.  Northern Michigan is beautiful and rather primitive.  Both Tom and I love that area but I'm too old and jobs are scarce as far as Tom is concerned.  So here we are in Grand Rapids.  Tom is fortunate we are as close to Lake Michigan as we are as for recreation, he'll drive to the lake and watch the scenery.  He has Meniere's and is unable to sail any more.

The area where you live sounds like something I would enjoy but I swear I'll stay here until they carry me out!!!  I think my folks chose well when they picked this area to move to; both parents were from Great Lakes states (Minn and Wisc).

MarsGal

Good late morning to you all.

This morning I spent about 45 minutes out in the yard pulling some weeds, mostly. I also met the guy that is fixing up the place next door. The people that will be moving in are a couple with a daughter. That is about all I got before we veered off onto yard work. I hope to work a little out back tomorrow morning.

Shan is all excited about the abundance of birds he can see from the windows, and that I have a few windows and the back porch door open. Of course that won't last. The temps are to go back down into the 40s and 50s again Monday. Right now it is 69o. It is to go up to 800 this afternoon.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - My afterlife plan is the same as yours: cremation, and then a container in the ground.  There is a beautiful old cemetery in San Jose, where my mil, fil and bil are buried. We have the plot right next to theirs, and we will join them when the time comes.  Then if any of our  children or grandchildren ever want to visit the gravesite, we will be all together in a lovely setting.  I've always felt bad that my mother is all alone in a cemetery in Southern California.  When my dad died, (18 years later), he left a request to be cremated and ashes scattered at sea, so that's what we did.

Larry - We always have low temps into the 40's overnight, throughout the month of April, and into most of May.  Daytime temps are very erratic,  and can  rise into the low 70's, but mostly star in the 60's throughout April.  Today it's supposed to go to 72, but yesterday was only 62, with a strong North wind from the gulf of Alaska.  Southern Cal, is where the temps are much much warmer.  They've already had lots of 80 degree weather, and a couple of days into the 90's.

wjoan

Larry, I have found that if the subject comes up in front of a Dr. they grunt and say nothing.  To me it just sounds like they are controllling their temper on the subject.

FlaJean

Joy, my mother lived with us for 30 years, and we used to go out to lunch about once a week together.  When we lived in Maryland, I took her to Harborplace.  We had a delicious lunch and then an artist did a caricature of each of us.  She really enjoyed it and it is such a pleasant memory.

My first cataract operation went well, but my second one this past Tuesday did not as there are some underlying problems with that eye.  However, the pain is mostly gone and is not quite as blurry today.  I go back for another checkup Monday morning.  I have a good doctor so am hopeful this eye will be OK.

Lindancer

Good afternoon, We have had two beautiful Spring days and now we will be down to 38 to morrow.  I bought primroses to put out, in one of my pots,  Red, white and a blue one. The first day it was warm, and  Home Depot was really busy

Larry, I have been seeing my primary doctor seems like many years, years, Last week he and I talked about everything. He is so frustrated about what he can and can't do, or how long a visit is suppose to last. He would retire, only he is 55 years old

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I have requested only that my remains be placed somewhere with a marker because I want others to see that I existed.  I know beyond my great-nieces and -nephews, no one will be interested in a 2x or 3x great aunt.  Tom and I have talked about it and after I am gone, he may see if my remains can be put where my parents are buried.  That cemetery is about a half mile as the crow flies from where we lived when I was growing up.

Tom had expressed a desire to be buried (or scattered) up north but with his family down here and my wish to have it known I existed, he is coming around to a similar thought.  Tim was the first of the nephews to die and he had said he wanted to have his ashes scattered on an arm of Georgian Bay where he did a lot of boating.  His daughter has asked Tom how to go about it and Tom may try to convince her to have his remains placed near where she lives because she's not going to the UP or Canada to visit water, I know.

I noticed snow on the roofs across the pond and radar looks bad.  I had thought Erin was here already but she had not started up from Indy as they are having bad weather too.  Only ours looks worse.

MarsGal, Kendrick spends a lot of time at the slider in the lower level where he can see more birds.  If I can't find him upstairs, I know where he is.  If he wants attention, he finds me to see that I am still here.

Jean, I'm sorry your second cataract surgery did not go well, maybe as time goes by, things will improve.

Gloria, at least you know where you are going!

Are you watching golf now?  They're at Hilton Head SC.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I'm going to also take a look at the Hilton Head tournament.  I used to follow tennis, but I'm so tired of the same old winners, year after year.  That's the good thing about golf . . . even though there are lots a former winners playing, a new or lower ranked player can come out of nowhere, and win!  Not so in tennis.

FlaJean - Sorry that you've had some problems with your second cataract surgery. Keep us posted on what your doctor has to say about it on Monday.

It turned out to be a nice day today - about 73 outside.  However, tomorrow's high is predicted to only get to 62 degrees, and then lower as the week moves along.  It see-saws back and forth all the time, but drizzly rain is expected all week, so this will be our only day of pleasant weather for a while. I would get out and enjoy it, but I'm too congested and drippy from pollen allergies,  so better off inside.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, ever  since Tiger had his health problems, no one has dominated the golf scene.  A player may win one week and next week you'll find him down in the top 10, but usually not winning.  And there are so many good young players coming up.  I like them all; I have no favorite player.  And so far, golf has not had the scandals that other sports have had.  They do get a lot of money for winning a game, but when they don't win, their money is much less than the winner's.

I plan on being cremated and my children can spread my ashes where ever they like....a location of
their choice...  even split and scattered where ever each
of my children would like..

A simple plaque with my name and birth and death
info can be laid on the plot where my parents  and
brother are buried.  (For historical purposed,
of course)

Mary Ann - I really enjoyed watching the Heritage Tournament today.  I didn't see the whole thing, but probably about the second half.  Right away I was rooting for Ian Poulter.  Not that I knew anything about the different players, but as soon as I heard he was British, and that a Brit hasn't won in something like 30 years, I decided that it was time!  So I was happy that he was the leader  for today.  When he was interviewed at the end, he seemed like a nice guy, so I will be following him! :)

Lindancer

MaryAnn, I watched the last half of golf to day,The sun porch was 70 so I set out there and was reading my ebook. It is good to see so many young winners  I am rooting for Matt kushner, he always seems so pleasant. I think Tiger brought a differnt generation in to watch and play golf. I took up golf when I retired, and was still playing at 89..  It made me feel so good, when I could still hit acrosse ther pond and onto the green.  The owner of Sandy Pond, the golf course I was playing on, said even his brother could not do that.

Jean, I have heard of very few people with problems after their cataract surg.  I hope your trouble is straighten up soon.

I just looked at the Grand Haven webcam,  at almost 7 p.m. eastern time,  and there were 2 people in wet suits on surfboards.  Also, there are 2 big ships anchored out on the lake.

Mary Ann, if you look in and see those two ships,  where do you think they would be heading.  Would that big a ship be able to go up the waterway between the 2 piers?   I know last year, I did see a ship go through, but don't remember where you said it could have been heading.

Mary Ann,

Here is another link for you to see.   This is the Water Taxi pier where you can get a boat to all the different tourist spots along the harbor are.   You can go to several restaurants, Fort McHenry,  the Science Center, Harbor Place area and several other stops they make.

It is something that my family and I have been wanting to take for a couple years now.  We all can't come up with a time that is convenient for all of us,

The pier on the right, just out of sight, is a big restaurant.  And, the pier on the left, a new hotel just opened this past winter, built my the owner of Under Armour,  which headquarters are just across the water form the hotel.  It was built on an old pier, that when I was growing up, was what they called the Baltimore Recreation Pier.   The pier, itself, had deteriorated so bad, that they had to build another more stable pier underneath, before they could put up the hotel.  There is a swimming pool at the very far end of the pier.  I think rooms start in the  $ 400 a night and up.  There is also a restaurant on the street level.  My son and DIL have tried to get reservations, but it is always booked up for weeks and weeks.  They have been in there to have a drink and just to look around.  Said it is beautiful !  I hope one of these days to get down that way just to look around.

My oldest son and DIL still go down to the harbor area to go to  some of the restaurants.  I can't remember the last time I was down there.

This week there is a big Light Show and when I just looked at the web cam I sent you yesterday,  the harbor area is wall to wall people.  There is no way you would catch me in that mob.  Hopefully, everything will go well without any problems.

You can see more of the water taxi's during the day.   Hard to see them at night.  They run daily.  Lots of people use them to go to their jobs in the area.  You mentioned that you like to look at water sites, so thought you were like to see another area closer up.

Thanks, Joy.  When I looked at the site, there was something moving, like a houseboat type with two or three levels.  Of course, it was night so it was hard to make out.  Baltimore is much larger than any of the towns on Lake Michigan so we do not have a waterfront complex.  When you get away from the town proper, people have built homes on the dunes.  That is not a wise thing to do because winds move the dunes constantly, sometimes burying the houses.

The weather seems to have calmed down temporarily but a mix and snow are in IL and WI headed this way.  Dot called and had noticed many churches closing tomorrow so said she is not planning to go to church, which means that I won't be going either.  Tom and I may go out to breakfast after he gets home from his church.  Our temperature is 30 degrees and if there is any rain, that is a good combination for sleet and/or ice.

There is a stone aggregate place on the Grand River (which is what the channel is) and large ships can go there.  I think Tom told me of another place for the ships to visit.  In the 70s Norm had a power boat at a marina on the Grand and the boys spent a lot of time on the boat and got to know the area quite well.  The channels are wide enough that a small power boat (or sail boat) can be in the channel at the same time a freighter is in it.  If the small boar would find there would be not enough room, they are faster than the big ships and could turn around and outrun the freighter.

Marilyn, yes, Ian Poulter is from England and I love to hear him talk.  He has a different accent than many of the English.  He hasn't played for some time, or at least in any of the tours I've watched.  He won a match a few weeks ago, the first in a long time.

Gloria, I think you mean Matt Kuchar and he is one of my favorites, although he is not one of the younger players.  Sandy, even when a star, Tiger Woods was not one of my favorites.  Norm would get upset with me because Tiger was the best golfer in the world (his words) as if that is why he should be a favorite.  I like Phil Mickelson; he always seems to pleasant.  Also Patrick Reed has not been a favorite, but after hearing all the bad things, I think I should be more kind to him.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Joy, George and I used to wander down to Inner Harbor occasionally. It looks like there have been some changes since I was last there, but it is hard to tell in the dark, so I will look again later. Even with the crowds (and I am not a crowd person) we always enjoyed it. One trip, I remember, neither one of us was feeling real energetic, and it was such a beautiful day (sunny, not too hot), we spent quite some time just sitting on a bench and enjoyed the scenery. That was the day we watched as a scow came along and scooped the trash floating along the edges of the harbor. George even got some pictures of it. When I was with him, we never got around to going over to Fort McHenry, but I know he has been there without me (darn him) since then. The local township and social groups used to arrange bus tours down there each year, but I haven't seen anything in a few years now.

Speaking of bus trips, this summer my sister and I will be taking one down to the Philadelphia Zoo and the Aquarium in Camden, NJ. I took this trip when I was young with my girl scout troop. Sue has never been to the aquarium. It should be lots of fun. I expect there will be plenty of places to sit and rest if we need to. We both have arthritis and she has Sciatica as well.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We have an overcast but warm Sunday morning.  We have a forecast of 100% chance of rain during a four hour period this afternoon.  I just hope it waits until I am home from Church around noon time.  Other than attending Sunday School and Church this morning and getting us something for our main meal for today there is nothing else on the agenda.  I will watch the final day of the golf tourney if they can get it in before the rain.  I just checked and see that they have already started the last round so it should be over early this afternoon.  Yesterday I did attend my meeting and then make a quick stop at Comcast and returned the equipment and it only took a couple of minutes.  Finally I stopped at the Costco gas station and filled up the tank since I went right by it after I left Costco.

Mary Ann, yes the columbarium is what you described except ours will not be in a building but will be a three-sided wall type structure on the grounds outside of the Church. I seldom watch the Weather Channel and hadn't picked up on them naming the winter storms.  I will have to refer to the map to get a better bearing on where Duluth is located.  Thanks for the info.

MarsGal, hope you are not too sore and stiff from the weed pulling yesterday.  Cats love those birds and it sounds like Shan has plenty to view.

Marilyne, I hadn't given any thought to an urn in the ground.  However, all of our parents and grandparents are buried in NW Missouri so our plan makes more sense to us.  Do you get much humidity in the climate in your area?

Joan, the staff that doctors have to have now to handle all of the insurance and Medicare paperwork is something.  I know of several doctors over around Atlanta who have tried a subscription plan where you pay a set amount for the year and they don't deal with the insurance companies.  However, one of those doctors, who used to be our doctor years ago at Kaiser before he started his own practice, tried it and then retired in a year or so.

Jean, so sorry you are having problems after your second cataract surgery.  I was very fortunate in not having pain with either eye after my surgery.  Probably a good thing that the underlying problems have been discovered.

deAngel, I feel for the doctors as they must feel like they are on a treadmill and then having to deal with someone over the phone or a computer making the decisions on the medical treatment they are allowed to provide has to be very frustrating.

Sandy, your burial plans sound like ours as the niches will simply have our names and dates of birth and death.  The plaque we have for Stacey will record the same information but rather than having a separate niche we plan on mixing her ashes with ours in the urns and then the remainder of all of the ashes will be scattered.

Mary Ann, I heard the announcers say yesterday that Ian Poulter had almost lost his card to play because he was doing so poorly but there was some recalculation done and he was able to retain it and is now doing very well.

Mary Ann

If "April showers bring May flowers", what does April snow bring?  Radar shows freezing rain and our temperature is around 30 degrees.  Dot called last evening that from what she saw of so many churches etc cancelling services this morning, she was not planning to go to church, so I did not go either.  I think Tom had planned on it, but it is near 11 am and he isn't up yet - unless I've missed seeing that he was already out driving.  Whatever - he and I will be going out for breakfast when he returns.  I am not dressed yet.

Larry, Norm's ashes were in a plastic bag and Dot had a plastic (or wood) box with hinged cover that measured about 12" square and the bag fit into the box.  The cemetery had a hole dug that accommodated the box, they put the box in the hole and shoveled the dirt over the box.  The stone had been on the lot since they bought it.  Norm died Nov 24 2015 and it was about two years ago now that we buried him.  Much better weather conditions then than what we have today.  Strange how things go - Terry was with us then and now he's gone too.

While I should get dressed first, I guess I can start watching the golf tournament soon.  Because of weather somewhere, one of the tours was going to play 36 holes yesterday.  That is a lot of walking, even for the younger players.

I've been watching the various cams I have and being Sunday morning, it seems it is too early for much activity.

No one else went to church today because services were cancelled at my church and also Tom's.  But Tom was out driving, which I did not realize until he called me about going out to breakfast.  As it turned out, we went to Cheers and were handed their lunch menu as it was about 1 pm when we got there.  We were lucky to get the handicapped parking place right by the front door.  I had a gyro and, as usual, brought half of it home and that will be my supper.

I took a nap and when I woke up decided to watch golf.  Gloria mentioned Hilton Head weather did not look good and at 4:45 I don't know if they played and finished or were rained out because the Champions are playing at Duluth GA now.

When we left for lunch, I could tell it was raining so put on a stocking cap.  I'm glad I did because it was a mild sleet.  Cheers is only a few blocks from us, about the same as Mr Burger.  I could tell driving was iffy but Tom had no trouble.  When we get to Five Mile Road, from which our complex turns, we have a steep hill to go down.  I told Tom that years ago when I was still working, the sheriff had Five Mile closed because it was so icy and I had to make a detour and cross Five Mile to get into our complex.  It still is crazy and lousy weather for so late in April.

Gloria, I usually wear a short sleeved T-shirt, sometimes with a sweater, other times not, and I am very comfortable.  Our thermostat is set at 73 degrees and that is what the thermometer reads in this room.  I do have on a sweater now because of having gone out for lunch.  Almost a uniform for me.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I think you were the one who mentioned seeing a couple of large ships on Lake Michigan.  I just looked at the lake and there is a ship on the horizon that seems to be going North.  I don't know, but - there are steel mills in Indiana and they could be going to Duluth, however, they could be going across the Strait and head East.

I also noticed something on the south pier that I had not seen before.  I'll watch to see if I can tell if they're working.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Unfortunately, I haven't yet seen any of the large ships on Lake Michigan. My Grand Haven cam is out, and has been for a couple of days?  I remember that happened once before, and then it suddenly reappeared, so I'm hoping the same thing happens again.

I stuck with The Heritage, until the bitter end, and it was an unusual ending.  A tie between Kim and Kodaira, so they repeated the 18th hole two times.  Still a tie, so they went back to the 17th, and that's where Kodaira won.   I was sorry to see Ian Poulter end up so far down the line.  However, I'll be looking for him in one of the tours in the future.
