Sonic is a Oklahoma "original".   (copied from an article in "The Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture")

"... . The (Sonic) corporation evolved from the Top Hat Drive-In  in Shawnee, Oklahoma, a restaurant founded in 1953 by Troy Smith.

After three failed restaurant ventures, Smith opened the Top Hat, an abandoned root beer stand, to serve hamburgers and hot dogs cooked to order. While traveling in Louisiana in 1954, he saw a food stall with homemade intercom speakers that allowed customers to order from their cars. He contacted the innovator who made an intercom for the Top Hat. Smith also added a canopy to shelter diners' vehicles and hired carhops on roller skates to deliver food directly to the cars. Each customer received a mint with their order, a tradition to remind customers that they were "worth a mint." Smith had the prototype of the future Sonic.

In 1956 Charlie Pappe, manager of a Woodward supermarket, partnered with Smith and opened a second Top Hat Drive-In. By 1958, Top Hats existed in Enid and Stillwater. However, only four opened, because the name was already copyrighted to another business. Echoing the jet age, Top Hat's slogan was "Service with the Speed of Sound," so the men chose the new name "Sonic." (end quote)

Their chili cheese Hot Dogs ("Coneys")  are The Best!!!!

We have a Sonic  up the street  and I love their burgers.

MaryTX

My favorite Sonic meal is a Chili Cheese Dog w/ Onions, Tater Tots and a Cherry Limeade.  :smitten:

Marilyne

I'm getting hungry! ;D  I'll have to find Sonic, somewhere in my area!

Callie - Interesting history on Sonic/Top Hat.  Sounds similar to Mel's Drive In, in California.  Too bad  Mel's didn't continue to expand and innovate like Top Hat.  Instead, they sold their many franchises, and were just a memory, by the 1970's.

MarsGal

And all I had for dinner was a grilled cheese....

The Top Hat sounds just like the old A&W Root Beer stand we used to stop at on Route 11. Route 11 split in two right there to go through little Hogestown (no more than three blocks worth) before coming back together at the other end of town. The A&W stand went be the wayside long ago. Now there is a pizza place there and at the other end of Hogestown is an Italian restaurant. Ah, memories. To this day, A&W Root Beer is my favorite root beer.

Mary Ann

Callie, interesting story about the Top Hat.  I think we have a Sonic here but I don't know where - probably in the south end and I live in the north end!  I looked and found two here - one in the south end, the other on the west side.  Neither near enough to make a special trip.  We have the "usual" near us - Mc D's, Burger King, Subway (only one now), Wendy's, Tim Horton, Arby's and our favorite - Mr Burger, aka the Cholesterol Pit!  We also have several pizza places; my favorite is Papa Murphy's Vegetable Pizza that you bake yourself - and I am not a vegetarian.

MarsGal, A&W root beer is my favorite too.  That is what I usually buy when I buy soft drinks.  That and Sprite.

Here's a link to the whole story of Sonic's history.  It's quite long so I just "lifted" the most pertinent facts for the earlier comment.

http://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=SO007

Ahh,,  A&W Root Beer!    During early marriage days in Amarillo, husband played on a church softball team and the couples would all go to A&W for a frosty mug of root beer after the games.  Very tasty on a hot summer's night.

MaryTX,   wish I could still eat the chili cheese dogs.  Alas.... :'(

Mary Ann, Except for Tim Horton's, we have the same ones you have - plus Whataburger and a few locally owned places. I learned about Tim Horton's on a tour of Canada.  Didn't realize there were any in the USA.

Until they "got healthy", I loved McDonald's French fries.  Rarely eat them anywhere any more; there's no taste without the "grease".

Mary Ann

Callie, thanks for the link to the Sonic story.  I hope it continues to be successful.  If they would put one on Plainfield Avenue, I might visit them.  Actually, I don't drive any more so it would be up to Tom.  I also don't go to Fast Food places often any more.  Age does things like that to a person.

Since we're next to Canada, maybe that is why Tim Horton branched into Michigan.  Again, it is a Fast Food place and I have to want a particular item from there to visit (and I have no favorite at present).

Hi Everyone.  We are in for another summer like day with us again reaching into the low 90's this afternoon.  My schedule is clear today so plan on just taking things slowly and easily.  Yesterday morning was very busy and I came home tired.  We cancelled our plans to go to the shoe store and then out to eat.  Pat baked a loaf of banana nut bread using her Instant Pot for the first time and it turned out very well.  I just had a slice of it with my breakfast this morning.  I do have tentative plans to clean out my closet and bureau drawers.

Mary Ann, the delay in yard mowing will give your HOA a budget boost.  Here we get the lawn maintenance the year round.  However, during the winter months it is every two weeks and then every week the rest of the year.  It sounds like the birds keep Kendrick busy as he watches and listens to them.
Like Callie I thought Tim Horton was probably just located in Canada as it has been mentioned numerous times by our Canadian friends.  Pat has had the Tim Horton coffee pods for the Kuerig and really liked the coffee.

Marilyne, did you catch on the news the man who accidentally hit a tree and then a cloud of pollen flew down on him.  I have never seen anything like it.  I am reading that the pollen is really bad this year. We had the same experience with the Quiznos as one opened where we lived but only lasted a couple of years.  I don't think there are any of them in this area.

MarsGal, as I recall Sonic serves a pretty large burger but you either have to eat it in the car or at a picnic type table at Sonic or take it home to eat.  I don't really like eating a sandwich in my car as it can be messy.  I just read an article yesterday about GrubHub and several similar services that are now available here in our area.  I think it was GrubHub that had a flat $5 fee for the delivery.  I suppose a tip would be expected in addition but would be handy since we can see the menus on the web.  I wonder what happened to the old A&W Root Beer places?  I remember their root beer floats in the frosty mugs.

Callie, I had no idea where the Sonic chain started or evolved from.  I don't remember that the servers here are on roller skates but it has been a while since I stopped at one.  It sounds like you are familiar with their hotdogs.  :)  I like the very thin French fries and but it is mainly the ketchup that I enjoy.

Joan and Mary, it sounds like Sonic is well liked and available a lot of places.  My son won't go there anymore as he thinks he got food poisoning from a breakfast burrito.

wjoan

Larry, our Sonic is called Sonic Burger and it is a drive in.  Not sure if it is part of the bunch that all are talking about.   We have waitresses on skates that come to the cars to get your orders..  Takes me back to my teens and driving into Mel's/  LOL

Mary Ann

Larry, we have a place that starts with Q (Qdobe?) and I was thinking it was Quiznos.  Anyway, Annie took me there one day and I had never been there.  It is like Subway where you order what you want on your bread product.  I had no idea what anything was so Annie had to kind of order for me.  She went easy on the "spice" so it was OK, but I told her I thought she and I would not go there again together.  Tom goes to a Mexican restaurant near us and I have gone with him and I've learned what I can eat there that is not too spicy.  I am not sure I've ever liked really spicy food but I do like it tasty.

We are starting out on the coolish side this morning and I think we will not be out of the 40s today.  As the weekend comes and next week progresses, we will warm up.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

The Grubhub in our area doesn't list very many restaurants, but it seems to be a mix of free delivery, fee for delivery, no minimum order, or minimum order. The website also rates the participating restaurants for several things including accuracy of the order delivered.

I just finished lunch. In  about an hour, I'll be out mowing the back yard. Looks like today is the day to do it too. Weather forecasts call for rain (or possibility thereof) for rain the next four or five days.

wjoan - Mel's was the place to go at night, where you would see all your friends and boy friends! I think Mel's was featured in the movie American Graffiti

Mary Ann - I love Mexican food, but cannot handle "spicy" anymore either.  Some restaurants serve a cheese enchilada that's mild, or a taco salad.  Seem like lots of Asian restaurants here get closed down temporarily by the Health Department, for code violations.  Thai food is very popular here, but those places are vulnerable to being closed.  As a result, I've never wanted to try Thai food.  My younger daughter loves it, and eats at the place near her quite often.

Larry - Yes, I saw the news story of the truck that hit the tree, and the huge cloud of pollen came down.  Makes you understand why we're all suffering from allergies! ::)

Marilyne

MarsGal - Just saw your last message, or I would have said Hi to you! Looks like you're keeping busy doing your yard work.  I saw a story on the news last night about something in PA that I was going to ask you about, and now can't remember what it was??   I'll check my news page and see if it comes back to me?  :-\

FlaJean

Supposed to reach a high of 89F today.   I enjoy chimichangas, taco salad, but not my husband.  If we go to a restaurant, it is usually Italian or a steak house and I’m happy with either one.

Marilyne, when our daughter lived in the Santa Cruz area, we visited several times and really liked the area.  One evening my husband and I walked downtown to a little cafe and had the most delicious veal chops I ever tasted.  The first thing I noticed on our first trip was the abundance of really fresh vegetables.  We were there once when strawberries were being harvested and I never knew strawberries could be so good.  Our oldest grandson lives in Temple City and loves Calif.  Our last trip to CA was in 2002.  Now our daughter and family live in Canada.

When I was working, several of us would go to the Beltline Bar where they made the best burritos and I always had mine with no refried beans.  Of course, I've been retired nearly 32 years so it has been years since I've been there, but a steak house north of here serves chimichangas and I like them.  Of course, I like steak too, so I am more likely to have that.  In fact, our grocery store featured steaks 2/$12 and I bought them - and they were delicious!  Tom and I split one so we still have one in the freezer.  It is seldom that he is here for supper but one of these days we'll have the other one.  The steak was boneless but I don't remember the cut, however, it was not a thin steak.

It's a dreary day here and our temperature is in the low 40s; it better not go lower because I have my plants outside!

I'm keeping an ear open for the trash truck as I did not have the trash ready for Tom to take out earlier.  They don't come until between now and 1 pm.  (The truck just drove in and Tom heard it so is taking care of things.)

Mary Ann

Marilyne, never saw the movie, so don't know.

Hi Everyone.  We are in for a very hot day as expect the temperature to reach the upper 90's with no rain sight.  The only highlight from yesterday was that Jennifer stopped by for about 30 minutes.  We hadn't seen her for several days so good to see her.  We got to wish her a happy birthday in person as we won't be seeing her tomorrow.  If Pat is up to doing so we plan on going to breakfast at IHOP and then attend a meeting.  Scott plans to come over briefly to get something before he goes to work this afternoon. This will be plenty for us today.  I plan on watching some of the golf later this afternoon.

Joan, I think we are talking about the same chain with Sonic.  We have a place here in North Augusta that has been in operation for the last 50 years or more called the SnoCap.  Originally it was run like Sonic but not anymore as you have to go in to order and they have a few booths.  Pat and I have only eaten there once or twice.  However, we often have their coleslaw with our family night dinners when it is hot dogs and hamburgers.

Mary Ann, you can get spicy at Mexican restaurants if you want but also they have many items that are not very spicy.  At Diablo's you get to tell them what to put on your Tex-Mex item and how much.  So a person can avoid anything spicy if they want to.

MarsGal, there was not a long list of restaurants or other food establishments for the various meal delivery services in our area.  However, among them was a wide variety from the expensive steak house to fast food places.  I hope you got your back yard mowed and then will get some rain.  Right now we do have a chance for rain on Tuesday and we sure need it.

Marilyne, I didn't realize that was a real place in the movie American Graffiti?  That is a really old movie but I remember Pat and I seeing it at the theater.  I have only had Thai food once or twice and remember what I had was so spicy that I really couldn't taste the rest of what was served.

Jean, I like just about everything I have ever eaten at a Mexican restaurant.  You are a long way from your daughter and family.  Do you get to see them very often?

Mary Ann, that sounds like you got a good deal on the steaks.  We often have the 6 oz sirloin steak at Texas Roadhouse and it is just the right size and the price is reasonable before the evening menu prices kick in.

Marilyne

Larry - Regarding American Graffiti . . .  the small Central Valley town of Modesto, is where producer/director George Lucas went to high school, so the story takes place there.  It was actually filmed in Petaluma, which is another small town near the coast. I don't know if the Mel's Drive-In, featured in the movie was actually in Petaluma or one of the other small towns nearby?  it's really a very entertaining movie, and one that I've enjoyed watching many times since it came out in 1973.  It's available on Comcast, On Demand.

Speaking of restaurants/drive-in's . . . there is a big controversy going on here, as to which franchise is going to replace a Denny's, that has gone out of business. I'm sorry to see Denny's closing down in this area, but I guess that type of coffee shop is no longer popular.  The younger generation doesn't go there at all, preferring places like Starbuck's or the various hamburger franchises. Apparently the only people patronizing Denny's, are the old folks like us. We've always liked Denny's, and will be sorry if they go completely out of business.  It's kind of sad to go to one now.  The counter is all older retired men, and construction workers.  The booths are filled with older couples and groups of retired men who meet for breakfast.  I guess all restaurants have their hey-day in the sun,  and then slowly fade away?

FlaJean - Santa Cruz, still has a lot of "Mom & Pop" cafe's, near the Boardwalk, and in the downtown area where you probably enjoyed your veal chops.  When we drive over there, we usually eat out on the wharf, at one of the many seafood restaurants.  All fresh caught fish!  I remember now, that your daughter and husband moved to Canada.  Are they in BC?  I suppose you don't see them very often, being as they are so far away from Florida?

Lindancer

Good afternoon, cool and rain here.  the high is suppose to be 53 and rain all week end.

Marilyne, my son Dennis was once manager of a Denny's in Calif.after that he went back into the service, and retired a Major in the AF

Larry, I am not fond of Mexican food.   Nothing spicey.  Next week my neighbor is taking me to JR's It is a stake house, I like there Lobster Bisque and Surf and turf, That's what I generally get if I eat out .  high  on the hog, as the old saying goes,

Larry, our youngest daughter and husband live just a few blocks from us.  She encouraged us to move close by and even went real estate shopping and found us this house which we really like.  She was concerned that at our age (both of us in the 80s) that we should be close to family.  It all worked out so well for us as our house in Ocala sold in two days and we were able to do all the real estate in buying and later selling long distance.  Our daughter handles commercial property rentals for a large company and was such a big help.

Our older daughter in Canada frequently calls on FaceTime and it is almost like being in the same room.  I was able to walk around the house when we moved in and show her all the rooms, etc.  I think they will be visiting in the next year.  Our son has MS and hardly ever leaves his house.  We visited him a little over a year ago.  He has a wonderful wife who is a true helpmate.  We feel very thankful.  Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and I am a very thankful mother.

I have been putting this off for some time now, but might as weell bring it out in the open.  As you all know Athena is Dan's daughter.  She has never been happy as a girl and she has been working on changing that for a few years.  HIS voice is now deeper, and body is changing almost daily.  His name is now Adam and he is happy now.... more happier than he has ever been.  Upbeat attitude and all.  He is putting monthly updates on FB so all can see and hear.  Never seen him so happy.  A bit for me to get used to but love the new happy grandchild that he is.

Joy

Joan,  as long as he is happy, that is the important part.  It is important that he knows you still love him, not matter what.

Joan - I'm happy for Adam, and for his new life!  I hope he will be accepted within the extended family, and that his life from here on, will be everything he has always wanted.

Joan, I'm happy for Adam, too, and I hope things go smoothly in his new life.

Thank you ALL so much.  He is happier than he has ever been and  and more open and thrilled with changes.   Is good to see his elation over this change.

shirleyn

Joan, I am happy for Adam, that he has found himself.  So glad you can accept him, and hope that Dan and the rest of your family is accepting, too.

wjoan

Shirley..... Dan was accepting long before me.  I just could not get used to the little girl who used to help me bake cookies is now a guy.  Took me awhile, but now it is the way it is.  Seeing how happy he is now, it was meant to be.

Joan, I join the others in saying I’m glad he has found himself and is happy.

wjoan

Fla Jean,  thanks.  Yes, it is so good to see him so happy now.
