Mary Ann

MarsGal, what a great way to celebrate Joan's birthday!!!

Mary Ann

wjoan

MarsGal, thank you sooooo vefy much.

Marilyne

I liked those Happy Birthday videos too!  I think I liked the symphony orchestra one the best, although they were all different and fun to watch.

It seems like it's been a loooong day, and its still only 4:00 pm. Two hours to go until dinnertime, and I'm so hungry I can hardly wait.  Maybe because I had a late breakfast and didn't eat lunch.  I had my hair cut this afternoon, and it looks like she cut it way too short.  I won't complain, because it grows fast . . . just hard to get through the first couple of weeks until it gets to the length that I like.

Larry -  Besides the 27 candidates running for Governor, we have 35 candidates on the ballot for Senator!  One of them is Dianne Feinstein, who has been in the Senate for a long time.  She is now 84 or 85 years old, but I think she will be reelected, in spite of her age.  No matter what party we are registered with, we receive a ballot with candidates from all parties, and can vote for anyone from any party.  The majority of the 27 and 35 running for Governor and Senator, are Democrats.  There is one Republican for Gov, who might have a change of being in the final election in November, but I think it will be two Demo's for both offices.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I had a late breakfast, then Tom and I went to lunch at a Deli about 10 miles from here.  I had a Reuben Panini and Tom had a ham sandwich.  I had not been there before so didn't really know the ropes but I will another time.  My sandwich was good and I'd just as soon go there again.  I wasn't hungry for supper, so ate very little.  Now at 8:45 I'm hungry and I hope I can find something nourishing but not too heavy to eat.

I've finished my Friday night programs and had time to come in here.  I looked at the boat schedule and there are two boats arriving, but neither of them in Duluth - one is headed for Superior and the other to Two Harbors.  All I get there are arrows on the map.

It's been a nice day today and tomorrow we should see some rain.  At 8:50, we are at 65 degrees.  Should be nice sleeping.

Marilyn, I don't know what I'd do with so many candidates on the ballots.  I know California is a big state so needs a lot of senatorial candidates, but the number of governor is overwhelming.  I'm having enough trouble with two Republican candidates in particular for governor.  There will be more candidates but these two are the best known.  I'm not very political anyway but Tom is.  Politics and religion are two things we do not discuss but I will ask him closer to August (primary election) what he thinks of the two men.  I don't care for either of them, so it will be a hard decision for me to make.

Hi Everyone. It is another overcast morning but only a low percentage chance of more rain today.  We did have lightning and thunder last evening with quite a bit of rain.  Yesterday we did go to the shoe store where Pat ordered the shoes she wanted and they should be in after about a week.  We first went to Honey from the Rock Restaurant and had a delicious lunch. I spent the rest of the day resting as was still worn out from the activities on Thursday.  This morning I will go to the fruit stand and get Pat some more fresh strawberries.  I then plan on stopping at Lowe's for an item and then at Aldi for a few things.  Depending on how much energy I have by 10:30 I may go to a meeting before the stops at Lowe's and Aldi's.  That will be it for today.  Pat made some homemade potato soup in the Instant Pot a couple of days ago and that will be our evening meal.  I do plan on watching some of the golf later this afternoon.

Marilyne, it sounds like you had the same experience that Pat often has with a hair dresser.  Right now she has found a man who listens to what she wants and seems to be pleased with the outcome.  However, as you say it will grow back out.  Thanks for the info on your elections.

Mary Ann, your lunch sounded good.  I had the baked chicken with mac and cheese and a side of slaw with a roll yesterday at Honey from the Rock.  Their desserts looked so good but had no room for them as the servings were very large.

Mary Ann

I forgot about the Royal Wedding and wouldn't have gotten up at 4 am anyway, but I did see what was televised from 8 am to 11 am.  Actually, our NBC channel had a rerun of most of the ceremony.  At times, they showed celebrities and I hardly recognized any of them.  I decided to come to this folder before I go anywhere else.

I will say it looks like a nice day here, however a bit on the cool side.  Sweater weather - and I love it!

Larry, for breakfast, I had part of the sandwich I brought back from lunch yesterday.  I still have more to eat as I couldn't eat the whole half.

Watching the wedding has delayed my checking all of the folders here, but they'll wait; I'll have to get dressed first.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I recorded the Royal Wedding, and started watching when I got up this morning about 7:00.  The arrival of friends and family at the church, was quite interesting.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip are amazing!  He is 97, just recovering from surgery, but looked good, and walked in without assistance or cane.  The Queen is about 94 now I think, and she also looked good. They both walked briskly up quite a few stair steps to enter the church, without any help.

It was interesting to see the guests, such as Elton John, Serena Williams, George Clooney and wife, and of course all of the many Royal family members, and the women in those wonderful hats! The Chapel at Windsor Castle, was breathtakingly beautiful.  The wedding itself was very nice, but also very long. I thought the bride was lovely, and the groom was handsome!

May they live happily ever after!

Marilyn, our NBC station showed an hour of the ceremony from nearly start to the end of the ceremony in the church.  I love those little fascinators the ladies wore; I remember women wearing them at William and Kate's wedding.  I think they weren't as extreme today as at their wedding.  I think Meghan is a beautiful bride and her dress was lovely, very understated.  Someone mentioned how ruffly Diana's dress was.  I was in St George's Hall at Windsor in 1988 but it seems some construction was going on at the time.  I'm not sure what I saw - except some ravens.  I'll have to get out my pictures - if I can find them!!!  Oh, the queen was 92 in April; I'm the one who is 94!  Ha!

I was going to sit outside with the cat but discovered it was drizzling and neither Kendrick or I would like to sit on the deck in such weather - so we didn't!

I haven't been able to see Grand Haven all day - too foggy.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Those fascinators, are really fun to see!  I've read that British women love to wear them for all sorts of formal or semi-formal events, and they have them handmade, to match their outfits.  They are a "must" at weddings!  One of the news commentators said that the women guests at this wedding were asked to tone them down, and not go overboard like they did at Prince William and Kate's wedding, because they were too much of distraction.   I remember one that was worn by one of William's cousins, that was shaped like a giant pretzel! ;D
Can you imagine women here in the US, wearing them?  I sure can't.

Lindancer

Marilyne, The fasinator hat is very popular, with our Red Hat luncheons. I wore mine last week.  Maybe I will have a picture in it.  I was already up at 5, so I watched the whole thing.  Was very interesting and quite different the others I have watched. I did enjoy it and their was such love in there eyes, I thought.

Hi Everyone. We had another nice rain last night and will only get into the low 80's today.  I did accomplish what I set out to do yesterday, i.e., getting strawberries, stopping at Lowe's and then at Aldi's.  By that time I knew I was tired to try to get to the meeting.  I got a couple of ears of fresh sweet corn at the fruit stand so we had that with a big bowl of the potato soup that Pat had made a couple of days ago and it made a great supper along with an ice cream bar each that I had purchased at Aldi's.

Today I will just be going to Sunday School and Church and then will pick up Jennifer and bring her to the house to let me off and she will take the PT Cruiser back so Scott can use it to get to work.  I will probably pick up a Firehouse Sub for our meal of the day. That will be it for today other than to watch the last of the golf tournament today.

Mary Ann, when they talk about the movie personalities and the singer of this day and age I have no idea about who most of them are nor do I care.  It was a beautiful wedding and my wife watched most of it and I saw a little of it.  There was certainly a lot of pageantry and tradition involved and it must have been a job to get everyone where they were supposed to be at the right time.

Marilyne, I expect there were some anxious moments as the Queen and Prince Phillip went up and especially down the stairs.  Those hats were something else.  I certainly hope the marriage lasts.  I heard that he is sixth in line to the Throne.  When you speak of fascinaters are you referring to the hats?

deAngel, I guess you answered my question to Marilyne about the fasinator hats.  I suppose the closest thing we have in terms of a public event where the ladies are expected to wear hats is the Kentucky Derby.

Mary Ann

Larry, I am with you in recognizing the names of celebrities, however, I did know who about a half dozen of them were.  I've mentioned before that Kendrick is named for Kendrick Lamar, a rap singer of today.  I had not heard of him at the time (he's near five now) but I have heard of him since.  It amused the young man who was my therapist when I went to him a couple of months ago that a woman of 93 (then) had a cat named for Kendrick Lamar, but I told him I had not named him - Annie did.  Kendrick does not come when you call his name, anyway, but more the sound of my voice.

Dot and I got to church OK, then went to Mr Burger for our usual.  We had a "Rogue Brass" to accompany us this morning - three euphoniums and a tuba.  They are all older men playing the instruments and I loved the sound - lower than trumpets.

Today is rather dreary and only in the mid 50s now.  I would have been able to go out without a coat except I discovered it was sprinkling when I was ready to leave to I did wear my raincoat.  I also wore a red sweater for Pentecost.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, the Rogue Brass group sounds like something I'd like, but my husband would especially enjoy it. He played trumpet in many styles of bands over the years, most recently in dance bands, that played the swing music of the 1940's and '50's.  Any time an "old timer" musician or band comes to San Jose for a concert of any kind, he loves to go.

Your usual at the Cholesterol Pit, would taste mighty good to me right now.  One of those days here, when I have absolutely nothing that I feel like eating for lunch.  I'm hoping that we go out tonight for something.  I think we have the same dreary weather that you're having . . . overcast and windy, with temps only into the low 60's.  I've felt chilled ever since I got up this morning.

Larry - Google the word "Fascinator", and I'm sure you will see plenty of examples.  Or just ask Pat, and she will explain why they are unique.  Queen Elizabeth and Phillip walked up those steps like they were both 25 years younger than they actually are.  However, I didn't see them leave the church?  I think they took an exit out the back door?

Gloria de - I would love to see a picture of you wearing your fascinator! :)

Good afternoon, I think that bright round is thing in the sky is called the sun. Have not seen it in over a week

MaryAnn, I still have not heard of Kendrick, but what do I know I still say Decoration Day

Larry, I have a couple of fascinators,   As I have mention so often I belong to two chapters. We go on trips and have lunch once a month. You wear a Red Hat to meetings and purple cloths,  If it is your birthday month you reverse colors.  The president is call the Queen.  I have been vice queen (or Queen of vice)When we go to conventions,  I had to wear a teria
and walk on the cat walk

WHEN I AM AN OLD   WOMEN
I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn't go,  And I shell
spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandals,
and say we've no money for butter.
I shall set down on the pavement when I am tired.
But now we must have cloths to keep us dry pay our rent. Not swear in the street and set a good example for the children.
We will have friends for dinner and read the papers.  But maybe I ought to practice now,  So people who know me are not surprised and too shocked when suddenly I am old and start to wear  red and purple

Mary Ann

Gloria, I did wear a red sweater today, but not with purple.  While I have a purple blouse, I doubt I would wear the two together.  Somewhere on another computer or on the external hard drive, I have the "When I am old, I shall wear purple".  Describes us to a tee, doesn't it?

I'm watching golf now on CBS; the golf channel has a tournament on - Regions - and that has some well known golfers playing too.

Thanks Bubbles!

LineDancer, love the picture!  I was also the "Queen of Vice" in my red hat days.  We had to close out our group - everyone had gotten old enough they did not want to be responsible for all the arranging, etc.  Also, we just unexpectedly lost our Queen last month.  Only 75 yrs. old & that was hard to take.

FlaJean

Gloria De, loved your photo!

MarsGal

Lovely picture, LinDancer. Bubble, thanks for linking it.

Marilyne

Gloria de - What a cute picture of you and your fascinator!  I'm going to put it on my desktop, and save I with other favorite photos from S&F.   Interesting information about how the Red Hat group works, with the Queen and the tiara!

Shirleyn - Love that you were Queen of Vice! ha ha :o

Mary Ann - I see that a boat from The Netherlands, will arrive this evening at 7:00 Duluth time.  That would be 8:00, your time, so hope you have a chance to see it.  The boat has a different name from the colorful one I was so impressed with last week. I hope to take a look at this one, but I’m going to the Farmer’s Market at 4:00, and likely won’t get home in time.

Marilyne, RH's have been good for me, it gets me out of the house

Shirleyn, our one chapter i have been in 18 years, and as you say, we have all aged and it is hard to get hostesses and different restaurants. When we started we did go to the city and was on different TV Shows, Years ago on Martha Stewart's TV show we could not wear our red hats
One chapter is called: The divas and the other Ruby Red and Wild

Marilyn, I forgot about the Van Koevering until too late - it was half way down the harbor channel by the time I thought of it.  I did watch a couple other ships, one coming in, the other going out.  From their list, there are no other boats coming or going during the time i am up.  Thee is so little else going on with the computer during the day that I keep looking at the boats to see if there is any activity.

I went to the eye doctor today and I guess she has gone about as far as she can go to improve my eyesight.  She did suggest I put my laptop on a pillow or box instead of only my lap in order to get the screen closer to my eye so I can read better.  Everything cannot be enlarged on the computer so I will see what can can come up with.  The trouble is that the keyboard is at the right level; just the screen is not.

We've had a dreary day today but I notice as the week wears on we will have increasingly warm weather.  Today I think the temperature did not get out of the 50s.  But I watched the Weather Channel and it seems the southeast is having storms, much worse weather than we've had, so I won't complain.  Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, I clicked on the Bridge Cam a little after 9:00 tonight, just to take look. I was surprised to see that the bridge was up and waiting for a boat, because I had just checked the schedule and there was nothing until 2:00am.   It was a departing boat, and it was the longest one I have ever seen.  It went on and on, and was so long that it looked like a train passing under the bridge.  At the end, there was a high lighted tower that looked like it might not fit under, but of course it did.  Nothing that I could see on the boat itself to identify where it was from?  Of course I looked at the schedule again, but there was nothing listed at that time. It would have been about 11:15 pm, in Duluth.

MarsGal

This morning I woke up an hour later than usual to a rainy morning. Good thing I got the backyard mowed yesterday afternoon. The new bug repellent I got seems to work okay. It doesn't clear off as many bugs as another I was looking at, but it can be safely sprayed on clothing. I do hate to spray the stuff directly on my skin.

The cats gave me a break last night by not playing "musical lap" and Shan didn't need reprimanded for scratching furniture. It was like a mini-vacation for me.

I haven't decided what I want to do today except vacuum. I might try to sort some old electronics for recycle. I found a faith based non-profit that will take old computers and such and restore them to pass on to other nonprofits that need them. Best Buy will take my old APC power supply which is great because that thing is heavy. That will still leave the old TVs that need to go somewhere. The county recycle centers charge 50 cents a pound to take electronics. The old tube TVs are too heavy for me to take out to the car so I will have to hire a junk hauler to take them.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is another cloudy morning and we have a good chance of rain this afternoon.  We expect to get only into the low 80's today.  This is the day for our Senior Luncheon at Church.  We have a speaker today who is one of the weather persons on TV.  Pat doesn't plan to attend but I am going and will come home via the Produce Market to pick up some more of the delicous sweet corn.  I have nothing else planned for today,  Yesterday I did call the Insurance company and put Scott on our policy for the PT Cruiser.  We did get the AC fixed on it yesterday to the tune of over $325.  However, still cheaper to do occasional repairs than to buy a different car and this is the most solid car I have ever owned.  It is really too bad they have quit making them.

I see my posting from yesterday didn't seem to make it.  I must have forgotten to push the "Post" button.

Shirley, it is sad when we have to dispense our groups such as your Red Hats.  I can easily for see the end of my coffee group as the men are all my age or older and we are not getting new folks joining us.

Marilyne and deAngel, I just looked up Fascinator hats and see what that they are the type of hat to get a comment.  A lady in our Sunday School class Sunday had on one and it created a lot of comments.  I certainly noticed it since there is only one other lady who regularly wears a hat and it is like a big hat with a wide brim so doubt it would qualify as a Fascinator.

DeAngel,  being a part of a group is a good way to get us out of our homes and be involved with other people.  That is the main reason I am attending our Senior Luncheon today and for attending the Wednesday night dinners.  It isn't the food but the fellowship that is important.  Of course, the food doesn't hurt.  I like the names of your groups.

Mary Ann, I can always find something else to do on the computer even if it is just to work a crossword or jigsaw puzzle.  I like to listen to an audiobook while working the jigsaw puzzles.  Unless you have a pillow with a hard surface I suggest you not use that as the laptop will overheat.  At least that was my experience a number of years ago.  In the past they used to have little pull out legs for the back of the laptops.  You might try putting something under the back part of the laptop to raise the screen up and will will leave the keyboard at about the same level as before but slanted, which actually makes it easier to see the keys. We are suppose to have some rain and perhaps not so good weather through the holiday weekend here in the SE.

MarsGal, glad you found a bug repellent that works.  I have some bug spray that I use as a barrier around the house and also can spray in the house that has no odor and is suppose to be safe, except for the bugs.  However, I am still very careful with it and it has a long extendable nozzle and I just have to hold the trigger in and not pump it as the old style used to be.  It sounds like you are getting Shan trained a bit.  We had and it may still be operation, an organization like you described that takes old electronics and uses parts or fixes them to also pass on to someone who can't afford a computer or to non-profits.  Here it cost $25 to dispose of them and I haven't heard of any organizations that does what you described.  However, I don't know if that is per item or not. I am really glad our TV and computer of this day and age are not so heavy.

Mary Ann

It is starting out to be another cloudy day, but I saw the forecast on the computer and the sun should make an appearance later.  Our temp will be in the mid 60s and later in the week we will get up into the 70s.  I am getting tired of the drear and when I look at Grand Haven, I can't even see the piers because of the fog.

Larry, I had trouble with a previous computer heating up and at a garage sale bought a board for 25c.  I still have the board and it is possible I can put that on top of a pillow to raise the monitor of my laptop.  I am going "as usual" this morning and even using another pair of computer glasses which I think show clearer than the latest ones.  I know it is hard to prescribe computer glasses.

Marilyn, I looked to see if I had marked the arrival/departure time of a boat around 11 pm but I had not; probably because 11:15 Duluth time would be 12:15 am my time and I would expect to be in bed.  It could have been the Walter Mc Carthy that was scheduled to leave at 5 pm but at 9 pm was still in port.  I know some ships leave whenever they want to - on a schedule or not.

MarsGal, it is a respite, isn't it, when the cats settle down and let you breathe without them having to be paid attention.  Kendrick comes into this room occasionally to check on me.  I don't know what he'll do in a couple of weeks when I'm in Indianapolis for the weekend.  Tom has said in the past he comes to Tom and "talks" to him, as if asking where I am.  I'll only be gone over a long weekend - Friday to Monday.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann,  I'm sure you already know that there are laptop "desks" that are available in all shapes and sizes?  My older daughter likes to sit on a chair or couch with her laptop, and was starting to get a lot of pain and discomfort in her upper back, neck and arms.  I happened to see a "desk" at Barnes & Noble, when I was in the store, and I bought it for her.  It has a firm pillow bottom, attached to the desk top, which is slightly shaped to fit at the waist.  Plenty of room for the computer and a place for the mouse on either side.  They had a number of shapes and sizes there to choose from, in different price ranges.  I think I paid $29.95, but don't remember?  Whatever I paid, it was well worth it, because she loves it, and says it has made a big difference in her comfort level.
Amazon probably has lots to look at, as well as places like Staples, Office Depot, and Barnes & Noble.
