Marilyn, I was going to send you a message about the Presque Ile too.  It was originally slated to leave at 8 am CDT, 9 am EDT and I was ready.  Then it changed to 11:30 am, then to 1:30 am and I'm not going to wait up to watch it go out!  I did see a boat leave Superior around the time I was watching and another was to arrive, but they stayed out on the lake and I didn't have time to wait.  But I did see the one ship leave.

Kendrick just about "got it" a few minutes ago.  I let him on the porch while I went after the mail and he didn't want to come in.  I took care of the mail and he still didn't want to come in so I got the broom.  He knows what the broom means but I've never had to use it on him.  I did have to put the broom beside him before he moved and in the meantime I lost hold of the door.  Kendrick scooted for the door just as it started to close on him; I caught the door in time, but it did hit him.  I told him it was his fault, this time.  He's OK, probably a bit upset.

I told the folks in Indps about the origin of Kendrick's name.  The parents' generation (60s) did not know who he was but the quads' generation (27-30) did and got a kick out of me having a cat named after Kendrick Lamar.  I do too and I think it's a good conversation piece.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Looks like Kendrick got the message, on not going back inside the house when you call him.  I wonder if he'll remember the broom, the next time he's outside? ::)  I can imagine the Indps family thought it was funny that you have a cat named after a Rock Star . . . or is Kendrick Lamar a Hip-Hop artist?  Whichever he is, he must be good, to have won the Nobel Prize for music!

My son is 6'3", and he also has to bend way over to hug me, or either of his sisters - and even his wife and daughter!  All the men in my family are tall, but the women are all average to short.  I was hoping his daughter would be tall, but she is my height, which is 5'4". (And I'm getting shorter all the time!)

Larry - I'm interested in what style and brand of shoes that Pat purchased?  I've been having problems finding comfortable shoes in recent years.  No matter how much money I spend, they become painful after a couple of weeks.  Lately I've been ordering online from Zappos or Amazon, because they both have free returns, but I hate to buy sight-unseen!

Mary Ann

Marilyn, all I have to do is show Kendrick the broom and I have not had to use it on him.  I just get it out where he can see it and he scoots into the house.  He didn't really come in right away this time but I got out the broom and put it close to him and he got the message.

I think Kendrick Lamar is a rap artist and maybe hip-hop fits that category.  I really don't know but young people do.

If I was 5 ft in my prime, I'm stretching it and I have shrunk to 4'9".  It's embarrassing when you can't step up into a truck, but that is what happens now.  A regular auto is no problem.

I watched a ship pull into the Two Harbors harbor tonight.  There is no sound which is part of the interest in Duluth, but it is nice seeing the ship quietly come into the harbor.

The window washer didn't come until nearly 6 pm but he had told me it would be late.  He had his son-in-law along to help.  I've had this man wash the windows for many years so we're kind of old friends.

Hi Everyone. It looks like we are in for another hot but otherwise nice day here in the South.  I had a very busy day yesterday and this morning will be the same.  I did go to Target yesterday afternoon and had our phone put on the T-Mobile system rather than the AT&T cell phone plan.  I had to wait while and elderly lady was trying to get put on the Cingular Cellular phone plan only to find out her phone was not compatible.  She just couldn't understand why not and the patient man who was helping her explained the situation over and over.  He then helped me and all went well with my phone but when he tried to connect Pat's phone he got a message it was locked, although I had bought it as an unlocked phone.  The AT&T store was near by so took it there only to find out they couldn't help me or won't willing to try (a continuation of the lack of service with AT&T in their stores that I had previously found).  Anyway last evening Scott was able to help me and we got the unlock code by jumping through the hoops on their website and all seems well and I think Pat now has good service. Unfortunately, I hadn't taken the little folders the sim cards came in to get a refund on the two sim from AT&T so this morning left early and was at  Target when they opened and got my refund.  In a little while I will  go pickup my friend and we will go to the Thursday coffee group downtown.

Mary Ann, it is always nice to get your windows washed.  Do you have tip out type?  It sounds like next year you will need to take your little stole or whatever you use to get in Annie's truck with you when you visit Tom H. so you can get into bed easier.  It sounds like you have Kendrick trained to respond to the broom.

Marilyne, I was never very tall but in my younger years I was 5'11" tall but have shrunk down to 5'8" now.  My son is a lot taller than I am.  My mother was about 5' tall and my dad was about as tall as I used to be.  Pat has worn SAS shoes for many years.  She has one foot that is larger than the other do to her feet being in bad shape.  She gets her shoes at a specialty shoe store and they stretch one of the shoes for two days and that does the trick for her.  I don't think I would order shoes online even though I have no problems with my feet.  Some shoes just feel better than others.  The next pair I get will probably have the Velcro fasteners.

Mary Ann

Gloria, it was the bed in Indps where I had so much trouble.  My new (October) mattress is higher than my old one but I can get into it - I won't say OK - but I can manage.  I would not advise anyone to get a memory foam, but others may have different circumstances than I do - being taller for instance.

It is starting out to be a lovely day and the forecast is for 85 degrees.  At 9 am it is 65 so I'll dress accordingly.

I am trying to remember what I did with the estimated tax forms I printed in April.  I remember putting them in a "secure" place, but I don't remember the place!  I can print more if I don't find the place - but how dumb!

Larry, I hope the poor woman finally understood about her phone.  I have the problem my printer is not compatible with this computer.  I have another computer I can use if I need something, or I can send it to Tom's printer, which is compatible!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Good Morning:  The temperature went down into the 40's last night, and I woke up cold.  Back to the Winter nightgowns!  We had the AC on a few days last week, but this morning it was cold enough in the house for the heat to go on.  This cool windy weather is not unusual for this time of year in California.  We refer to it as Gray May, June Gloom, or simply, "graduation weather."   I've attended many outdoor graduations over years, and been huddled in warm winter clothes!

Mary Ann - I'm in agreement with you, as to the memory foam mattresses. However, most people seem to love them, so I know we're in the minority.

AJ is going to his monthly retirement lunch with some of the old friends he worked with, so he will stop at Costco on the way home, and get one of the casseroles, or the salmon, for dinner.  Right now, nothing sounds at all good, but I hope to make a decision by the time he leaves.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I sleep as well on this Memory Foam mattress as it did my former foam mattress.  I believe this mattress is also foam because that's what I went in the store for.  But I do object to the ridge the memory forms.  And I had to pay extra for that!

Tom suggested we go out for supper tonight.  He already is out to lunch with a friend.

I've spent most of the morning trying to print my Federal and State estimated tax sheets and I am always forced to save what I want to print to PDF.  Then I am told I don't have PDF, and I've downloaded it several times.  I finally decided I'd print a form with all the necessary information and I found one I had typed for the State, so I printed that, then changed things to Federal and saved it in that name.  It isn't exactly what either wants but they both will accept it because there is money attached - and that is what they want !!!

It's about 80 here now and I'm dressed for it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - You mentioned the sound on the Duluth Bridge Cam.  I've never been able to hear anything, although I can see the sound icon at the bottom right.  I have it clicked on, with the wave thingies coming out, and of course I have my regular computer sound turned way up.  Total silence, when a boat goes under the bridge, so I must be doing something wrong, or leaving a step out?  There must be something that I'm not doing, that I should be doing??

FlaJean

Marilyne, I got a couple of “Go Walk” Skechers and have found them to be very comfortable.  When I had a gift card for Amazon’s, I bought a pair of “Mary Jane” Skechers and they also are very comfortable.  The sizing seems to be consistent between the various Skechers as I had the same size each time and they all fit.  They are the most comfortable everyday shoe I have ever worn.

The temp here is 85F, but the weatherman says it feels like 91.  We Went to the store around 2pm and it felt plenty warm!  Thank goodness for air conditioning.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I just looked at the Canal cam and I saw an icon that is for sound and on mine, there are several bars (lllllll) and I have mine all out.  If you want it quieter you darken lines from the right.  I explain things clear as mud so that may not make sense.

To and I are going to leave for supper in 10 minutes.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - My guess is that the entire web cam set-up, was designed and is programmed for PC's, and I have an Apple iMac.   The sound is missing for me on the Bridge cam, and I also don't have any of the things you mentioned on the Canal Cam.

In the early days of Computers, there were lots of things that I couldn't access on my iMac/Apple computer. However, over the years, and especially since the advent of the iPhone, iPad, by Apple everything has become readily available to everyone. I can see where there are still probably lots of Web Cams, that were originally programmed for PC's, and they haven't been upgraded.   Fortunately, I don't really care about those little details! :)  It would be nice to have them, but I really just enjoy seeing the boats and especially the Bridge!  However, I do plan to send a note to the Canal Cam "contact" box, and see what they have to say?

Marilyne

FlaJean - I remember that you recommended the Skechers to me a couple of years ago, and I looked at them on Zappos and Amazon, but can't remember why I didn't order them?  It was probably because  they didn't come in a narrow width?  I have to have AA or Narrow, or the shoes are too loose.  It's a big nuisance, to have a narrow, bony foot! However, I will look again at some of the online shoe sites, and see if any of them are carrying Sketchers in AA?

Larry - The only walk-in shoe store that still has a few narrows to try on, is the SAS store. The bad news is that they are discontinuing carrying them at that store in San Jose, because they don't have the room, and not enough women ask for AA, to make it worth their while.  They will still order a narrow for me, from their manufacturing site in San Antonio, but I have to pay extra, and it takes a few weeks.  Fortunately, you can order most SAS styles from Zappos, and they carry all widths!    The same high price though! ::)

Marilyn, I knew the Macs couldn't do some of the things PCs did but I kind of assumed it worked in reverse too.  Tom is a Mac person, has used them for years and prefers to not learn about PCs.  BUT!  When AMA has a problem, he sees what he can do and usually is able to help me.  Tom uses his computer for work so he gets a more expensive computer than most people do.  I wouldn't attempt to use his computer, although I remember being up north and using his and managing, but barely.  We get used to what we get used to.  I'm sorry you don't hear the sounds of the ships as they go by, including the horns, because it is almost ear-shattering.  One long and two short and sometimes a ship will vary the length of the toot and also vary the sound.

I also take a AA shoe, although in past years because I haven't been able to get them sometimes, I often wear a medium.  If it would be a dress shoe I would demand a AA for fit, but with walking shoes, it seems they rarely come in Narrow, so I get Medium.  The Hush Puppy factory is in Rockford MI, a few miles north of here so I go up there to get them.  If I'm lucky they are having a sale because those shoes are expensive.  But they last and I can wear them without pain.

I see they're working on the pier at Grand Haven.  Unless they get enough money, they may not replace the catwalk and that would be too bad.

Hi Everyone. It is going to be another sunny and hot day today getting into the low 90's this afternoon.  I plan on a quiet day at home to rest up for the weekend.  Pat's new iPhone 5 came yesterday afternoon and this morning I put in the SIM card and got it mostly setup.  She is now trying it out.  She held it yesterday and things it may be a fine size for her to hold and  to carry in her pocket.

Mary Ann, I agree about the memory foam.  That must be a very secure place if you can't find the forms.  Things can really disappear easily.  I often spend time hunting for things.  I am not sure the lady understood about her phone other than if she wanted to keep using it she would have to stay on Verizon which is more expensive.

Marilyne, your area being cold just doesn't fit with my California mental image.  I guess I just think of Southern California even though I know the climate is different in the Northern part of the State.  We are having the stuffed peppers from Costco with a side salad for our dinner tonight.  Pat couldn't order her SAS shoes because she needs one of them stretched and thus we have to find a specialty shoe store.  Fortunately we have one near by.

Sandy, nice to see you are enjoying a "rare day in June".  We get into the 70's at night but certainly not in the daytime.

Jean, I don't think I have heard of the Skechers shoes.  Are you all getting humidity down your way?

Marilyne

Switching back and forth from a Mac to a PC is easier than it used to be. I've used the PC desktops at our local library, and have had no problems. Daughter Sandy, has always had PC's, but when she comes over every week to do her laundry, she has no problem using my computer for Facebook, or to look up something on Google. The best thing about Macs . . . never all the hoop-la and fuss over "Windows", and the upgrading of various Windows applications.  No such thing to worry about on a Mac.  When I see people complaining about Windows here in S&F, I have no idea what they're talking about, and I'm grateful! ;D

Already past 8:00 o'clock, and I've had too much coffee, and nothing to eat yet, so time to fix some breakfast.

Mary Ann

Larry, I found the forms I had printed at tax time, fortunately, and I've written the checks and everything is in envelopes.  When I get up off my duff, I'll stamp the envelopes and put return stickers on them and take them to the mailbox.  I am sure the mailman has been here, so I expect the checks will go out tomorrow and they'll get there by the 15th.  At least they should be postmarked before the 15th!

Sandy, I commented in the Soda Shoppe that I had a different link to the Decorah eagles.

Marilyn, I very seldom complain about updates on Windows mainly because the changes don't bother me.  I usually can figure out what I'm supposed to do.  Then there is the fact that I don't use the Windows features because I use Firefox.  I do like the Windows News section but it is the news I don't like, not the presentation!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I have no idea what "Windows", even is?  Whatever it is, it certainly does generate a lot of conversation here in Seniors and Friends.

After lunch today, I plan to drive a very short distance to the one remaining orchard near me, and buy some fresh cherries, picked this morning.  It's a huge orchard, and cherries are the first crop, followed by apricots, plums, nectarines and peaches.  Then I'll come right home, and probably stay in most of the weekend.

Larry - we also had a freshly made Costco dinner last night.  Ours was the ravioli lasagne.  That's my favorite, but I also like the stuffed bell peppers.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I have Apple computer and iPad and I can hear the sound at the Duluth Canal cam.  If you look closely at the lower right corner of the picture, you will see a tiny little icon that looks sort of like a horn.  If there is a little x on it, the sound will be OFF.  just touch it and the x goes away and you should have sound.  But you will have to turn your computer sound up to hear it clearly.

I just saw what looked like a tourist boat coming in a few minutes ago.  I enjoy the sound of the waves.

Mary Ann

Thanks, Jean, about the sound.  I asked Tom if he heard the sound and he said he did and wondered if Marilyn had something on mute.  I've found that I have to have both the computer sound and the picture sound on.

The tourist boat probably was the Vista Star which shows it's going to leave, then before I can blink an eye, they change the time.  Again and again!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Jean, my icon looks a little different from yours, but basically the same thing.  It's a little icon of a speaker.  If I click on it, it looks like three "sound waves" coming from the speaker. There is no X on it.   I do have my regular computer sound turned up. I've had AJ check it out, and he can't figure out why there is no sound either?  If our son comes over this weekend, I'll have him look at it too.  Of course there has to be a boat arriving or leaving, in order to hear any sound?

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I forgot to mention the Vista Star.  I keep seeing it on the list of boats, and wondered why it was there so often?  Now I know that it's a tourist boat, and is probably extra busy this time of year.  I have yet to see it, so will try to get a look the next time I see it listed.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I just looked at my husband's MacBook Pro and next to the little speaker icon and it has 8 of those little sound wave lines and I can hear lots of noise--even people calling out to someone, waves slapping against the pier, the attendant on the tourist boat, etc. try clicking on the little sound wave lines and see if more of them come up.

Today has been really hot, and I am so thankful for air conditioning.  I read once that air conditioning is what helped Florida's population grow.  There might be some truth to that.  :)  Larry our humidity is about 70% today.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is another bright and clear morning but headed into the low 90s this afternoon.  My morning kitchen chores are done and have fixed Pat's breakfast.  I plan on attending a meeting this morning and then stopping at Aldi's for just a few items.  I may pick up something to bring home for our main meal today but Pat hasn't decided yet whether that is what she wants to do.  Plan to rest this afternoon and watch some golf and that is my planned day.  I did spend an hour or so trying to help my SIL with her Cricut craft machine without any luck.  I use a program called Teamviewer that allows me to have access to her computer.  She called later to say she had gotten on the phone with the Cricut tech and after working for an hour with her with no success they said they will send her a new machine as there is something wrong with the one she has.  I guess that explains why we had no success when I was trying to help her.

Marilyne, I am sure the experience on Mac's and PC's are basically the same when you are using a browser and seeing a website. I don't think I would have any problem switching to a Mac but not likely that I will do so. Windows is simply the computer operating system like the IOS is for Mac.  It is what makes all of the things on computers work together.  You are fortunate to live near the remaining orchard.  We haven't tried the ravioli lasagna but will do so for one of these summer Wednesday nights.  Everyone enjoyed the mac and cheese dinner and Pat added some Spam into the mixture.  She wanted to use a ham slice but we had had it in the meat tray too long and she was concerned it might not still be good.

Jean, I don't think I knew that you were also a Mac user.  I can't imagine what it must have been like to live in Florida before AC or anywhere in the South.  It could be really hot in Missouri where I grew up but at that time AC in homes or cars wasn't available and we just tolerated it as we had no choice. Do you have to use a dehumidifier during the hot and humid season?  We have one that we used last year and it made a big difference as the humidity in our house was getting so high.  I will have to hook it up again before long as the humidity is back.

Mary Ann, I expect the IRS looks at the date of the post mark to determine if the submissions are late.  Glad you found your forms.  Downloading software anymore is much easier and better guided with instructions than it was years ago.  After years using Chrome I am now using Firefox as I was having trouble with Chrome.  Pat still uses Chrome on her laptop.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone,
from the cool, clear, pleasant, rocky coast
of Maine.

I grew up in a 13 room farm house,  and back then AC was unheard of.    We even had a one pipe
furnace.  Which was in the cellar...  smack dab in the middle of the house.    There were holes in the celing to take care of the rising heat... some of which made it up to
the 2nd floor.      I slept on the second floor in a room that was right at the top of the stairs,  which were right near the one pipe furnace.    So I did get plenty of heat..    Well, sorta!!

Our Summers only had a few very uncomfortable
high humidity heat days.     So it wasn't that
hard surviving with out AC.     Now of course
I have to  have it.

It can get hot in Michigan in the summer, too, always has.  I had a cottage where Dad and I went for several years and I went alone after he died.  I was still working and the house was closed up all day and on weekends when I went to the cottage.  The times I was home were not long enough to cool off the house and I did not have a/c.  Finally I decided I could do at home what I was doing at the cottage - sit outside evenings and weekends and some cooler air would get into the house.  I sold the cottage.

I think it looks like rain here today and at 9:40 we are at 60 degrees.  I've showered and washed my hair and here I am.  I don't know of any special activity for me but Tom is usually on the go.  Last I looked, Kendrick was asleep on my bed.

Message about  Ionizing Air Purifers...

For years I have been using an ionzer air purifier...
I also for year have had a cough that has got
progressivly worse.    Although my lungs are clear
(had an xray )..
But came across this information when I decided
to get me a new air purifier:

https://www.livestrong.com/article/108499-breathing-ionizer-dangers/

So I unplugged my ionizing air purifier and replace it with
2 smaller HEPA air purifiers...     I keep one next to my bed
and one next to my desk,  where I spend my days on the
computer/tv  etc.

Immediately my coughing slowed right down and now I only
have to use an inhaler for my slight asthma condition....
What ever cough I have left is a productive cough versus
the dry cough that I have suffered from,  for years.

I can not believe that I went all these years using
the wrong type of air purifier....

So I thought that I would mention this, just in case others
might have similiar issues  as I have had.

I prided my self on doing a lot of research before trying
something,  but some how I missed the warning that
are out about ionizing air purifiers.  Probably what
happened was,  when I first started using it,  they didn't
talk about
the  problems...   but now of course,  they do.

No problem using the hepa type.   Except some air
purifiers are using ionizers along with hepa filters.

But not mine,  any longer!
I just bought these two Levoits:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076X2FJ5X/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And they are awesome!

Sandy - Thanks for the information on the Inonizing vs Hepa, air filters.  I plan to look at the Hepa filters today on Amazon, and figure out what I need.  I'm so exhausted from trying to breathe through a nose that is almost totally closed off. I've been using the Nasacort nose spray this week, and it's backfired on me, and I now have the dry cough.  Those cortisone sprays are evil!!

I also enjoyed reading about your 13 room farm house.  Life was so different and so simple back then. Did you have lots of family members to fill up all those rooms?  Life without AC, was all that any of us knew back then.

Mary Ann - I remember you mentioning your cottage before, and how nice it was to have a place where you could get away for the weekend.  Was it near a lake?  It's always been my dream to have a retreat, where we, or I, would get away from it all.  We live so near to the beach, and also the mountains, that it would have been an easy drive to many lovely scenic and relaxing places.  Alas, it was not to be . . .  for many different reasons, that don't seem important when I look back at them now.

Mary Ann

Sandy, that's interesting about the air filter and something you rarely think about.

Marilyn, my cottage was at a small lake north of Grand Rapids, near Cedar Springs and Sand Lake (if you have a Michigan map).  It was a 25-mile drive so easy to get to.  I sold it in 1976, a long time ago.  Because it was hard to keep up two places, I do not miss the cottage but I kind of miss my old home but that would be very inconvenient for me now because the full bath is upstairs.

I had a tete-a-tete bench where I would sit out on the front lawn by the lake and enjoy myself at the cottage.  There were plenty of trees around to give shade.  But I had a huge tree in my back yard at home that provided shade too and that allowed me to sell the cottage.
