Mary Ann - I have never clicked on the "maps", but I'll take a look.  It always helps me to get my bearings, when I can look at a flat map.  I haven't checked the cams yet today, because I've actually been busy doing some necessary housework.  I noticed an extreme amount of cobwebs, when the sun streamed through the bathroom window this morning. I mean they were everywhere!  I usually have the blinds closed in the morning, so I was really surprised. I got busy and washed the curtains, and AJ got rid of the cobwebs with his shop vacuum.  Now I'm embarrassed, as I'm sure that anyone who has used that main bathroom, saw what a disaster area it was! :o   Probably the entire place looks like a haunted house, so AJ is going to do all the rooms this week.

I didn't mean to sound snarky about the brave people who attempt to do some dangerous wilderness travel by themselves.  More power to anyone who has the self confidence and the determination to take on something like that. There are lots of devices that are a big help to solitary travelers nowadays - particularly GPS. No cell phone access out in the boondocks, but I'm sure there are other devices that help them stay in contact with someone, in case of emergency?  Used to be there was nothing but a compass and the stars!

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is to be another typical July day here in South Carolina.  I do have another pretty busy morning planned although not difficult.  Right before 9 am I will pick up an online order of groceries at Walmart and then make a quick stop at Aldi's on the way back to the house.  At 10 am I am meeting someone here in my office for an hour.  The rest of the day is clear.  My eye appointment went well yesterday and he said my eyes are in great shape other than I have developed dry eyes, which I can take care of with over the counter means.  I was fortunate to have a riding cart at  Costco so that make my shopping their much easier.  However, I was ready to rest when I got home about 3 pm.  Jennifer and Elizabeth were here starting to do cloths washing as their washing machine won't be fixed for several days. They didn't leave until about 8:30 last evening.  I expect the yard maintenance company to be in our neighborhood this morning for the entire day.

Sandy, wilderness trekking is not on my bucket list and never has been.  I am trying to imagine how that man could contact someone for help since I can't believe Alaska has the cell phone coverage to allow that where ever he was.  Recharging his phone would be easy with the ability we now have to use solar power to recharge devices.  He perhaps has some other way of communicating.

That was good news last night about the 12 boys and their soccer coach who were cave explorers in Thailand who were found safe but are still trapped in the cave.  Now that they know where they are they can undoubtedly get them food so they can be sustained until they can be rescued.

Mary Ann, my oldest great grandson, who is 15, is now on a camping trip in the New York mountains with a friend.  I put camping right up there on my "don't do" list with wilderness treks and cave exploring.

Marilyne,  I can't understand someone trying to climb the shear cliff of a mountain either but as you say some folks crave adventure and I know most folks don't end up losing their lives or getting into serious trouble.

Patricia, at least when the military are there to train in the ruggedness of Alaska they don't do it alone and I am sure they are equipped with communication and keep track of the personnel.  I hadn't thought about the man making the trek alone having radio contact.

Marilyne

Larry, I agree - there are lots of folks who crave adventure, and plan ahead for accomplishing such things.  Remember when President George Bush, Senior, parachuted out of an airplane on his 80th birthday? :yikes:  I can't imagine even going on one of those zip-line thingies, that seem to be so popular now at vacation resorts.  I also don't care for thrill rides at amusement parks, and I never did, even when I was young.

Mary Ann - I'm curious to find out just what it is that Tom stepped on?  An earring would be extremely painful I would think.  Maybe he should see his doctor today if possible, instead of trying to make it through the July 4th holiday?   I can see where you would have mixed emotions, as to whether you want it to be your earring or not.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I asked Tom last night if it could possibly have been my earring that he stepped on and he said 'no'.  I haven't looked at his foot and he is getting along OK with walking.  Since I don't know what it is, I don't know if he picked it up in the lower level or up here.  He does go barefoot often these days because of his neuropathy.

Good afternoon, and I will not mention the weather. I think it is the same allover the country.

MaryAnn, maybe Tom should soak his foot in  hot epsomsalts. when the foot doctor thought I had infected toe. also ingrown toe nail, that is what he told me to do.

Larry, my idea of camping, is having a nice little camping trailer, with a bathroom in it and a constable bed. Now my next door neighbor  likes to go camping in the rough, tent and campfire etc.

Marilyne, I never was much for those wild rides, even when I was young. My style was the merry go round and loved the flying swings :coolsmiley:

Mary Ann

Gloria, when Tom soaks his foot, it is in Epsom salts.  From what he says, nothing has happened and he'll wait until Thursday to see his doctor again.

No need to mention weather, is it?  It's hot all over, including here.

Mary Ann, my infected toe turnedout to be gout in- my finger and second toe.The foot doctor   sent me to have lab work done,  he then sent me to my primary doctor to see what meds they could give me as my kidneys are so bad. You know what  the old saying is: the golden years  :tickedoff:

Mary Ann - It's not hot here, or even warm.  Right now at 11:00 am, it's 61 degrees, and a strong wind is blowing hard enough to make it uncomfortable to even step outside.  I don't know if this is helping or hurting all the fires that are raging here in N.Cal?  The wind is mostly coming from the N/W, (off the ocean) which is moist air,  but it has a tendency to suddenly shift and come from the East, which is dry air.  It's supposed to calm down by tonight, and I certainly hope so, because it would be extremely dangerous as far as fireworks are concerned. (legal and illegal both)

Gloria - I agree with you, that camping in a comfortable trailer or RV, is the only way to go.  I could not handle the rustic outhouses anymore, so I would have to have a bathroom.  However, I will say that when I was younger, I enjoyed tent camping and cooking. When I was growing up, our family vacations always consisted of staying in a campground, near a lake or river, where my dad and brother could go fishing.

angelface555

Good morning from another hot dry, in the eighties, day in the Interior! We seem to alternate from hot and dry to days with intermittent thundershowers. Farrah doesn't seem to be bothered by all the noise, and when we've had fireworks in previous years, she doesn't seem to be concerned. She is very alert to sounds and activities in the hallways, so I guess fireworks aren't as concerning as closer activities.

Larry, there is cell phone coverage all over the state except when you are traversing mountains, but radio contact and GPS is readily available.

I grew up with the family either going to the cabin we owned on the Salcha River or spending days going along other rivers and camping in tents while my dad hunted and mom and all the kids gathered berries, wild vegetables as well as fishing, swimming and playing along gravel sandbars. It was a very idyllic childhood in many ways.

Marilyn, without my looking at a map, how far are you from the ocean?  We are about 35-40 miles from Lake Michigan.  I think the lake makes some of the storms disappear that are headed this way.  When I look at radar, many times the storm dwindles as it crosses the lake.  We're very fortunate that way.  Both you and Gloria live close to the ocean and I know the weather patterns for each ocean are different and also different than what we get from Lake Michigan.

Patricia, I don't think certain noises both Kendrick.  I've been in the living room with him during a thunder storm and he'll sleep through the whole thing.  I don't sleep through a storm, but the noise does not bother me unless it is close by.  What does bother Kendrick is when I sneeze or cough in bed - he gets up and walks out of the room.  Ingrate!

I don't think I mentioned a funny thing that happened to me Sunday.  Dot and I were just ready to leave when a friend and her husband came in.  So we had to chat.  The woman is not one I was close to, but she is/was friends with Tom and his former wife and I would see her often.  Or she might come here to see them.  Anyway, she did not recognize me and when I told her my name, it did not register.  I finally asked if she remembered Tom and she did.  I told her I am Tom's aunt.  It took a few minutes to sink in, but it finally came to her who I am.  She admitted her memory is failing.  She was with her husband who i had never met, but he could figure where I fit into the picture.  I knew his name but had never met him.  As Tom says, it is sad!

Marilyne, The camping we did when I was a kid, we would go to the beach and stay in a cabin, pump water, no electric of course no bathroom. Love to go to sleep listening to the ocean.  To get there you had to take a boat across Great South Bay to FireIsland. We stayed at long Cove sometime Smith Point. We also stayed at different places,My family  had a small dredge and he put up the docts, which also had to be taken up in the fall.. In Aug had to put the jelley fish nets in

Gloria and Marilyn, when I was young, still in high school, our Sunday School class would rent a cottage at Grand Haven at Lake Michigan.  There might be 20-25 of us and the cottage had six bedrooms.  The owners were friends of my mother, but they also belonged to our church which is why we were able to rent it.  The cottage was on Lovers Lane!  We not only had to walk across the beach, then the road, then up probably 25 steps to get to the cottage.  There was an old gas stove and to use it we had to go down below the cottage at the back and put in a quarter; I have no idea how much time we had from that quarter.  We were young and foolish then and it was nothing to have several of us with bad sunburns.  We'd put vinegar on our backs to draw out the pain and we'd put some sort of oil on our backs.  We'd go there as a family too.  It wasn't exactly camping, but it was roughing it for us, especially with the walk up the steps.  Those were the days!!!

Happy 4th of July!

Today we are getting a bit of a cool down. It is ONLY getting to 88o this afternoon. It is still a bit too  :hot: for me. We may get a few pop-up showers, later, to interfere with the evening festivities.

Lucy is doing well. She is no longer limping. Oscar is doing extra lap duty the last few days. Shan is a bit "wound up" this morning and will require some extra play time from me. He discovered he can jump onto the kitchen table a week or so ago and has just discovered he can knock things off it.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, EVERYONE!

MarsGal, you were up a long time before I decided to roll out of bed.  While I was raising the blind, Kendrick joined me so I rubbed his back the wrong way (he likes that), then I opened the slider to 78 degree temperature.  The cat and I sat on the deck for a few minutes and then I came in to fix my coffee and come on the computer.  It is now 9:45 and I've had the air on; I hate to have it running so early in the morning, but when it's already 78 outside and 78 inside, I turn it on.

I don't know what/if I'll be doing to celebrate the day, maybe just vegetate, which I am past master of.

It's good to hear Lucy is not limping now and Oscar and Shan are behaving.

Hi Everyone on this 4th of July.  We will watch any fireworks on TV today after one of the special programs like the one on the Washington Mall. We had planned to all get together to celebrate Pat's birthday a few days early but Scott told us yesterday that once again he has traded days with another employee and will be working tonight. However, the girls may still come out and have dinner with us.  So now we may do it on Saturday at noon.  I expect to have a pretty quiet day today.  I have done the kitchen choirs except to fit Pat's breakfast.  I split a big ripe and juicy peach and a banana between  but will add a couple of strawberries to Pat serving with her breakfast.

Marilyne, I do remember when President Bush jumped out of the plane on his 80th birthday.  Didn't he have a serviceman jumping with him holding on to him to soften the landing?  I have enjoyed the roller coasters and rides at the theme parks.  However, Pat has never liked that kind of thing and was even afraid to ride the Merry-Go-Round as a child.  The first theme park I even visited was Knots Berry Farm when my grandmother took me with her to California to see her sister.  I don't remember whether there were rides there or not but know I enjoyed it.  It was in California that I first had an Orange Julius and thought it was great.  You are certainly having cool weather.  I hope the winds will not be as strong there today.

Patricia, Farrah certainly isn't like a lot of cats and dogs that are so afraid of the loud fireworks noises.  I am glad there is good communication available throughout Alaska.  Do many people hike in the mountains alone?  We never went camping as a child.  Living on a dairy farm didn't lend itself to such things.

MarsGal, I liked your emoji for "hot". We are suppose to hit 90 today with a chance of rain.  We did get a very short popup shower yesterday afternoon. Glad to read that Lucy is no longer limping.  I guess time heals.  That Shan sounds like a handful.

Mary Ann, I don't think you had mentioned the nephropathy that Tom has.  I wonder if it is inherited as know that Norm certainly suffered with it.  Stacey also suffered greatly with it.

deAngel, years ago when the kids were young there was a camping facility not far from where we lived in Missouri that had little camper to sleep and eat in and a little lake where one could swim and fish.  They also had a little cafe and store.  It was a membership club and we bought a membership and used it a few times.  I understand it was only in business for a few years and then went bankrupt. We had moved away from the area so that wasn't a big concern for us as it wasn't too expensive.  The kids enjoyed it and Pat enjoyed getting to fish.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, EVERYONE!

Larry, both Tom and I feel we have some neuropathy but it affects us differently.  Tom's is more like Norm's in that he feels he is walking on cut glass but I think he doesn't have the numbness Norm had, nor has it worked up over his knees.  If that is what I have, it affects me at night when I feel electric shocks in my feet when in bed.  I have some numbness in my toes and Dot said her feet feel that way too.  I do not feel the numbness constantly.  Tom will be 61 later this month and Dot is six years younger than I am, so age affects some of us differently than others.

I got up about 8 am and it was already 78 degrees outside.  Kendrick and I sat on the deck for a while, but I wanted to get at the computer so we came in.  Shortly after we came in, the a/c came on.  i don't like it going on so early, but I'll let it do its thing if it wants to.  It is now over 80 degrees outside.

Kendrick doesn't seem to mind the loud noises of firecrackers.  He does mind the loud noise of my coughing or sneezing (he gets off the bed and goes elsewhere!).  He is much more interested in birds flying overhead.

There already are lots of people on the beach at Grand Haven and lots of people in the water.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Looks like our weather is still going in the opposite direction from everyone else's.  The wind has been howling for three days .. . this will be day 4, and it's still blowing and gusting this morning.  What an uncomfortable and windy 4th of July it will be this year!  I wonder about all the fireworks displays tonight?  Also, the illegal fireworks that people continue to set off in neighborhoods every year.   I had put away winter blankets, nightgowns and pajamas, long ago, but have had to bring them out of storage.  A most unusual summer this has been so far.

Larry - there are or were, lots of small, private camping facilities like the one you described, near us here in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Easy to get to, clean, and fun for families.  The San Lorenzo river runs through that mountain range, so it provides lots of fishing, swimming, and outdoor activities.  I don't know if those places are still there or not?

Knott's Berry Farm, has been in Southern Cal, since the 1930's or before?  It used to be an actual berry farm, with a fruit stand, and then they built a nice restaurant, that specialized in a variety of berry pies.  We lived fairly close when I was growing up, and I remember loving to go there, because they had an area outside the restaurant called Ghost Town, that was a rickety bunch of small buildings made to look like an old West town.  Workers were dressed up in Western clothes, and there were a few exciting things for kids to enjoy, like a man behind bars in "jail", who would talk to us, and a fake gun fight.  The Knott family sold out sometime in the 60's, and a huge, flashy amusement park was built, with all the requisite thrill rides. I think it’s owned by Six Flagg’s?   It’s close to Disneyland, so always gets the overflow of visitors, when D-Land is full.

Mary Ann - Looks like everyone is having fun at Grand Haven.  Do they have a fireworks show there on the 4th?  I liked your description of staying in the cottage there, with your high school church group.  You describe things very well, so I could picture it in my head. I remember the vinegar treatment for sunburn! ha ha. I don't know if it really worked, but we all used it back then too, and after a day at the beach, we all smelled like vinegar.

My cats and dogs over the years were really spooked by noisy fireworks.  At the first sound, Winnie would head for his little hidey-hole in the downstairs basement closet, and stay there until everything was back to normal.  I remember last year it was quiet here in my neighborhood, and I expect it will be again this year.

Supposed to be 92 today and 102 tomorrow. No windows open for me for a bit.  LOL

good afternoon, cloudy, but very warm

MaryAnn,Taffy does not like noise, she hides under my chair. A few years ago we had a very small earth quake, and she jumped on top of the refrigerator.

Larry, I had not thought of and orange julius in years. When we went to the mall in n,Charleston I always got one or Gloria Jeans coffee.

Funny, but I don't recall ever having an Orange Julius.  We had a place in the former mall that was near us so I might have had one; I just don't remember.  The mall was opened at the time of my dad's death, September 1970, and was the only one in the north end, so I'd say "if I can't find it at North Kent Mall, I don't need it".  Eventually the mall was bought by Lowe's and I found I didn't need anything because Lowe's did not sell it.  I have bought several things at Lowe's.

Marilyn, thanks for the comments on my writing.  I find it necessary to go overboard in description.  Norm would say, "what's your point?" but if I didn't tell him all of the details, he would not know.

Grand Haven was our place for recreation and we'd often take a ride there on a Sunday afternoon.  Now you have to pay to get in - either a yearlong pass or a daily pass.  Tom has a license plate that has some indicator on it that lets him in the park.  Back "then", we didn't have to pay and we could almost always find a place to park.  I don't know the "official" name, but where we'd go was the Oval.

Kendrick and I have been enjoying the loveseat I just bought.  I have been trying to entice him on the cushion and he's been up once or twice, but he'd rather rub my shins and/or lie on the deck.  With his long toenails, I may rather he'd do that too instead of clawing the cushion.  Time will tell.

Gloria, when fireworks were going off last night close to us, Kendrick just laid there and I think the sounds did not bother him.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

I just spent time on the deck, listening to fireworks.  I saw some, but mostly it was noise.  What I saw was pretty.  I think the 5/3 ball park is north of us and that was where I saw what few sprays I saw.

Tom and I went out for supper at Cheers tonight.  I had a "Killer Fish Sandwich".  I don't know what the "killer" was, but it was good and I ate the WHOLE thing!

Shortly, i will head for bed but I have one e-mail to write.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Good morning everyone.

We are in the midst of a slow moving front that includes thunderstorms. Yesterday afternoon it started off with three thunderboomers rolling through right in a row, with another one or two a bit later. And did it ever pour. The storms are still around, so we may see more later. Right now it is misty and 77oF. (7:30am).

I was curious to see what Shan's reaction to the thunderstorms and belated fireworks yesterday. This would be his first experience. He didn't seem scared, but he was a bit more alert and distracted, and wasn't much interested in playing. A couple of times he disappeared. The fireworks sounded "waterlogged", a few here and again, but nothing spectacular like years past. River Front was hosting a Street Food Truck event in conjunction with the Fireworks. I think there were to be a little over 40 vendors, starting at 3pm until around 2am. The rain and thunderstorms arrived around 4 or 4:30 and lasting until around 8pm. The fireworks were to go off at nine, but I think they delayed it a bit.

I'll have to check the news to see how well the Food Truck Festival went. I also need to call my sister to see if she went to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra event that was to be held at Reservoir Park, or the Forum in case of rain. She was not to happy about going to the outdoor event because, like me, she gets chewed up by the bugs. One of the singers who Jim knows and has performed with was to sing at the orchestra event. He really wanted to go in support of her and see how she did. \

Jim is my BIL and a Jazz pianist, still going strong at 80. The Central PA Jazz Festival begins today with the Riverboat Jazz Cruise here in Harrisburg, and goes through the 8th. Jim will be playing the last day of the festival during the Jazz Picnic at Indian Echo Caverns outside of Hummelstown, PA. The festival is spread out between Harrisburg, Hershey and Mt. Gretna.

Hi Everyone.  It is going to be another typical July day but only getting into the low 90's.  Not much planned for today.  I will pick up my friend and we will go downtown to coffee.  After I drop him back off at home I will stop at the Dairy Queen and pick up a small ice cream cake for Pat's birthday celebration on Saturday.  I also need to check on getting her some flowers as a gift from her sister.  I may make a quick trip over to Costco as they have some beautiful cut flowers and the price should be quite a bit less than the florist.  I already have the card and the gift I am giving her so then should be ready for her birthday.  Yesterday turned out just to be a quiet day and the girls did not come out for dinner as decided to just wait and come out on Saturday.  I did watch the Capitol 4th of July program and saw the beautiful fireworks at the end.  I enjoyed it and there was some entertainment for everyone.  The singing of Renee Fleming was gorgeous.  There sure were a lot of people there on a very hot night but they seemed to be having a great time.

Mary Ann, sometimes the bottom of my feet feel a bit numb and when I asked the doctor about it he indicated it was pretty normal as we age.  Fortunately it is not painful and I haven't lost feeling in my feet and don't expect to.  Stacey had a terrible case of nephropathy and suffered greatly with it.  However, she could injure her foot and not be aware of it.  It always seemed strange that there was numbness but still pain. I last time I had an Orange Julius it just didn't seem to be as delicious as I had remembered.

Marilyn, I would think people out in your area would by-pass fireworks with all of the wild fires that have been occurring and just take in the big shows where the professionals have set them up and can control them.  I heard a few loud bangs in our neighborhood but it wasn't bad at all. I wish we could share a little of our summer heat with you all.  Thanks for the info on Knot's Berry Farm.  It sure doesn't get the publicity that Disneyland and Disney World does.

Joan, good time to stay in where it is cool.  Is Candy feeling any better yet?

deAngel, I understand that it is either cats or dogs (or perhaps both) that can sense an earthquake.  It was kind of smart for Taffy to jump on something high so if something feel it wouldn't likely hit her.

MarsGal, send some of those rains down our way.  Each day the past several days there have been popup storms either South or North of us.  There must be a lot of Food Truck in operation in your area.  Just this last year North Augusta got its first Food Truck but I haven't heard anything about it for awhile.  It is great to have a nice Symphony Orchestra perform at events we attend.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, you wrote "here in Harrisburg", so why did I think you lived near Philly?  We had a sprinkle yesterday afternoon but it wasn't enough to help my plants I  have on the deck.  I'm trying to get Tom to produce a pail that I can fill and take to the deck for watering.  The plants are suffering because of 80+ heat.

Larry, Norm had the same question asked of him - if his feet and legs were numb, how could he feel pain.  But he did.  My problem could be related to restless legs, only it's in my feet when I'm in bed.  It is not always the same pain and fortunately I don't feel it when walking during the day.

We had area fireworks that I could see sometimes, other times not.  As I said somewhere, I think 5/3 ballpark is north of us and that's where most of the sound came from.  There are plenty of trees to block the view but occasionally the blast would be above the trees.  When I would be inside, it sounded as if someone was next to my patio shooting a cannon.  Kendrick did not sit out on the deck with me, but I think it was more that he wanted his bed to sleep on because I had the slider door open and he was close to the door.

I turned off the Capitol Fourth before it was very old so I missed Renee Fleming.  I like her and think she has a beautiful voice.  I forgot about her or I might have watched a bit more.  I was pleased that the woman who sang the National Anthem did not do too many notes that weren't there; so often the singers go all over the place and it sounds awful and last night it sounded just fine (my opinion only).

Happy Birthday to Pat - in advance.  Ice cream cake sounds good.

My air went on this morning at 8 am and I hate it to go on so early, however, it is hot and humid, so I'm glad I have the air.  I thought about the house where I grew up with no a/c and no air circulation and I am glad I have the a/c.

Good morning from a soaking wet Interior. Even though the last few days have been hot and dry, I knew this was coming as my bones ached Tuesday and Wednesday. We were in the eighties yesterday but were developing some severe wind, so I don't know if there were any fireworks.

We had twenty-two hours of daylight yesterday, so I've never seen the point, but I believe for the private user, its all for the thrill of setting something off without getting caught. I did hear several sirens yesterday as I was coming back into town. The real community fireworks come in late fall and winter celebrations where it is dark enough to enjoy them.

I spent the previous day with Alan and Dora and several others and had a very lovely outdoor lunch with lots of sides that I always enjoy more than the different meats however good. I've always been one for carbs.

I didn't get to see the cats as with all the folks going in and out; they were in the bedroom because they are indoor only. I did meet a very handsome young black lab named George who was celebrating being a puppy and getting lots of pets and loving. His owners had just picked him up last month and were quite taken with him. All and all a beautiful day even if my old bones didn't agree.

Larry, no.  With all the Dr. appts. and all she is still the same.  She sees the skin Dr. this nerxt time.  Hope at least he can help there.  She has had these sores all year.

Good morning to everyone. :) Still overcast and windy here, but not the gale force winds that we had the past four days.  This weather is much better, because it's cool, and even if the sun comes out later, it won't get too hot.

Our July 4th, was quiet.  I didn't hear a single firecracker or see any fireworks of any kind.  We live in a residential neighborhood near town (walking distance), but nothing going on in the business district, except busy restaurants and lots of beach traffic, coming and going to Santa Cruz.  It was cold in SCruz, so not a good beach day, but people go anyway, to visit the Boardwalk and ride the rides.

Our street is a cul-de-sac, of 16 houses . . . the majority of which are now owned by people from other countries, who are not American, and do not celebrate our holidays. So Fourth of July is meaningless to them, and also other days like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. Apparently it's the same on surrounding streets here.  When I think back as to what it used to be like here, with big July 4th barbecues, volley ball games, etc, with friendly neighbors, it makes me sad.  All gone now.  But I guess change happens, and there is nothing we can do about it.  AJ and I are the only "originals" on this street or anywhere near us, that I know of?

MarsGal - Very interesting that your bil is a jazz pianist, still playing at age 80.  My husband played trumpet in a small jazz band, as well as in a Big Band that featured swing, dance music, from the 1940's, 50's.  He played up until about the time he turned 80.

Mary Ann - I love to read your detailed descriptions on things, so please continue on!  I know that I tend to ramble on and on in most of my posts.  I try to cut them short, but usually get carried away and before I know it, I've written a book!  Sounds like you had a quiet 4th, but did hear some celebrations going on around you.  Nice that you and Tom went out to dinner at Cheers.  We were going to go to Kirk's Burgers, but decided it would be too crowded on a holiday, so we plan to go tonight. Last night we had a roasted chicken from Safeway.

Just stopping by for a quick Hello !

My 4th of July was kind of quiet.  My DIL did take me to the Dollar store, where I was able to get a good supply of birthday cards and then we went for a nice lunch.   Came home and read for a while, and had a quick supper.  Wasn't that hungry.  I did start watching the 4th of July celebration from New York and most of the music wasn't even patriotic music.  I didn't stay with it very long.  Then watched a little bit of the fireworks from the Baltimore Harbor and didn't stay with that very long.  Larry had mentioned they watched the show from the Capitol festivities, and I completely forgot about that being on.  I guess it had to have been on PBS,  as the local channels were NBC and Fox.  I sure always liked the one from Washington.  Didn't even think to check on PBS.

Today seems like Monday, so it  will be a short week for anyone who works.  Nothing special planned for the week end.

Hope everyone  will have a good day.

Marilyn, you decided to not eat out because you thought it would be crowded and Tom and I decided Cheers would not be crowded (it wasn't) because everyone would be having cookouts at home.  Is that a difference in localities?  Cheers is a sports bar, suitable for families.  We have another sports bar nearby (Score) and in the summer they import beach sand and palm trees.  They are beside a man-made pond and it is fun to go there for lunch.  There is a sailboat buried to the top of the boat and a gazebo.  It, too, is a family oriented sports bar and Tom, Dot and I have gone there in the winter when we have to eat inside.  The food is good and it isn't too expensive - neither is Cheers too expensive.

Joy, in the Soda Shoppe you mentioned a lobster roll.  I've never had an honest-to-gosh lobster roll, but I've made by own version with some fake lobster.  Since I don't know any better, I thought it was good.  The fish we get here are mostly from Lake Michigan and are whitefish.  At Cheers I had their Killer Fish Sandwich and don't ask me what made it a "killer", but it was good.  Usually I bring home half of any sandwich, but this time I brought home the cole slaw and that was/is my lunch for today, so far.  I haven't finished it and I know I'll have something more, even if it is toast.

Don't laugh, but I slept on top of my blanket last night with no bed covering over me.  I had had Tom wash the blanket and he had brought it up.  I put it on the bed and I was tired when I was ready to lie down, so I just did that.  I slept well all night.

The a/c went on at 8 am and has been running off and on ever since.  I appreciate it and remember days of not having it - both at home and at work.  My office was on the west side of the building and the late afternoon sun was bad.

Mary Ann - I never stopped to think that fewer people than usual, would be going out to restaurants, on July 4th. A big night for picnics and barbecues, for sure!
That sports bar, with water, sand and palm trees, sounds like a fun place for a meal.  I remember you mentioned it last year, and I was thinking that we have nothing like that around here at all.  Lots of restaurants have outdoor seating here, but none that I know of with a tropical theme.

Patricia - we've been watching that show on HGTV, that I mentioned before called Buying Alaska.  It's a half hour show, where a couple looks at three houses in one of the AK cities, and then picks the one they want to buy.  There were two recently in Fairbanks.  One was a couple where the husband was stationed at the Air Force base near town, and they were planning on staying in Fairbanks after he retired.  The homes they looked at, and the one they eventually chose, were in remote areas. This show was filmed during the summer, so was interesting to get a good look at the rivers and mountain vistas.

The other couple had been recently married, and had six children between them, from previous marriages.  I really got a kick out of them. They arrived in Fairbanks from Alabama, in the middle of Winter, and were totally overwhelmed by the snow and cold . . . but in a good natured way.  The wife was a doctor, and would be working at the hospital.  The husband was Puerto Rican, so he was totally out of his element! He had a great sense of humor, was very witty, and seemed more than willing to face the long winter season.  They bought a beautiful house just outside of town . . . wanting to be close to schools and work.  I can't help wondering how they did throughout the long winter?
