Gloria, I will say that Kendrick does not keep me awake at night.  I slept from 11 pm until 1:30 last night and he was not what woke me!  But that was when I checked the front door and there he was.  I wonder if he sleeps at all during the time he is out, either during the day or at night.  I would say he slept from the time he came in at 1:30 until 10:30 when Tom and I came home.

I heard some noise behind me and thought the cat was there, looked, and saw nothing.  Then I decided it was an outside noise.  I looked and a man was repairing the gutter guards on our building.  He's walked all over the top.

It is about 90+ degrees here now and I'm happy I'm inside with the air on.  I did sit on the deck earlier, but I came back inside and reset the thermostat and I am very comfortable.

Larry and Marilyne, I did watch the Canary Islands Observatory Youtube site off and on, but I was also doing PSP at the time with the computer window left open. They had a few experts talking about what you were seeing that was interesting, and I believe they may keep the eight hours or more possibly any highlights for other viewers.

The Twitter account was not the show but only showed another added link for those Twitter users who wanted to comment on the shower. The telescope has a 360-degree view, so you saw Mars and Venus as well as both dippers.

I was not able to see the showers as I am in the Arctic and the Northern earth's curvature prevents most of that as well as we still do not have the darkness available at that time. Also, we are still in the midst of clouds and heavy, steady rainfall that would have prevented views anyway.

Mary Ann

Another Kendrick story.  Kendrick slept much of the morning after his escapade but when Tom and I got home from my haircut and breakfast, he came out of my bedroom to greet us.  Shortly after that, Tom left to take friends to the airport but first he had to go north to Fremont to pick them up (about a two hour round trip and a good half hour to the airport.  He probably stayed with them until they went through security, then a half hour home.  To continue - I would look for the cat every so often but didn't see him; he probably was downstairs.  Time passed and I decided I wanted to know where he was.  I knew he was in the house unless he had a secret way to get out, and I was sure he didn't.  He has several favorite places to hide.  I have a davenport/couch/sofa with a flounce around the bottom.  I called to Kendrick and the flounce moved and out came the cat from  under the davenport/couch/sofa.  I had to laugh because I expected he'd bound up the stairs.

Patricia - That is a shocking and infuriating video! Is there no common sense left in this world??  So many people in that age group (30 to 40?) have an attitude of entitlement, that is hard for us to even begin to understand.  I had seen the video of the man and the bison on the TV news the other night, and I didn't think it could get much worse, but I see that it can.  I wish so much that both men would get a hefty fine as well as jail time, but unfortunately that will never happen.  Just a slap on the wrist is all that will happen.

Mary Ann - Maybe Kendrick had a scare last night when he was outside?  It seems almost like was hiding under your davenport, because he felt safe there?  Cats are so curious, that even if he was chased or frightened, he will still want to go out again.  Is there any way that he can get up on your deck from outside, or is it too high?

First, besides being territorial, ''grizzlies can run more than 60 kilometers an hour, and they can do it up hills, down hills or along a slope. To put that in perspective, that's 15 m/sec or 50 ft/sec â€" more than twice as fast as we can run. In fact, a bear can outrun a racehorse over short distances but has little endurance." So that man was plain stupid!

I live in the middle of bear country, blacks. browns and grizzlies. Often they are seen on the hillsides and along the rivers. Just last summer, in the foothills, a sixteen-year-old in a bike race, was chased down and pulled off his bike by a bear and eaten.

I remember a woman who posted a photo of her brother or brother-in-law in the old SeniorNet. He had left a parked car, closed the driver's side door to approach three young grizzlies. Someone had taken a photo of him squatted down just a few feet away from the advancing males who were also up against the hillside coming towards him.

The woman was very excited that he'd gotten the photo! Now, think about it. The man was between the parked car with doors closed and the dirt hillside. Remember car doors open at a slant. If threatened, this man would have had to jump up from a crouched position, move to the driver's side door, open it and somehow squeeze around or over the slant of the door and close it. All of this to escape one or all three of 490-790 lb bears in 50 seconds!

Luckily as I remember it, the three males weren't interested in the idiot as much as getting around him. I would say he was less than a couple of car lengths from them.

This is a link to Soo pictures.  You will recognize the names of the ships as they pass through the channel and locks.  There is an explanation of how the locks work and many pictures show the ships in the locks as they go up or down.  Lake Superior is (I think I read) 28 feet higher than Lake Huron and it is necessary for the ships to be raised or lowered in order to continue their journey.  In a few overhead pictures, you can see the rapids of the St Marys River, which were where the locks now are.  There are a lot of pictures, most submitted by travelers, but they are good.  Most do not have captions.  There are a lot of pictures, so if you don't have time, don't get started.  But they're interesting.

Marilyn, Kendrick has jumped off the deck once when we left him outside all night and when he saw a light in Tom's bedroom (lower level), he jumped down.  I am positive he could not jump up to the deck.  Maybe a lion or tiger, but I am sure Kendall is not that agile.

Patricia, we have a lot of fools among us and that man was only one of many.

Thanks Mary Ann, that is the first time I have seen a ship in the Soo locks

It looks like a tight squeeze for that large ship.  I have looked at the Sou locks but never saw a ship, just cars driving down the road.

MarsGal

Mary Ann, do I remember you mentioning that Kendrick was named after Kendrick Lamar? Lamar will be performing at Philadelphia's Made in American Festival which is being held on Sept 1-2. He is a rapper, not my kind of music.

My sister and I have set our plans for our fall bus trip. We will be going upriver to Williamsport for a ride on the Susquehanna in the paddle-wheeler, Hiawatha, take a train ride which includes a boxed lunch, and stop at the PA Grand Canyon. On the way home we will be stopping at the Country Cupboard for dinner. Country Cupboard is an extremely popular restaurant/large gift shop complex on Route 11/15. We love stopping there when we are in the area.

Hi Everyone.  We have a day with a zero chance of rain, according to the forecasters, which is pretty unusual this year.  It will get to the mid-90's this afternoon.  We did stay home yesterday and plan to do the same until late this afternoon when we plan on going out to eat.  We will meet Scott, and perhaps the girls, at Diablo's.  We haven't been there for quite awhile and we all like it.  The yard people are out working on the yards this morning.  Yesterday was a day of little accomplishment other than fixing breakfast for Pat and cleaning up the kitchen and then fixed the supper of the stuffed peppers, some salad and some applesauce.  I did finish listening to my audio book and began another one.

Mary Ann, I guess Kendrick just needed a day out.  Glad he did come home.  He did have to catch up on his sleep.

Marilyne, at least golf is a sport where even those who don't win the championships after awhile still can have a very long career and earn a lot of money as there are many tournaments.  After 50 they can go on the senior circuit.  It seems that many of the other sports have a much shorter time that the players can participate.  Unfortunately many of these players go to the pros before getting an education and then squander the huge amounts of money they have made.

deAngel, I agree that Tiger has matured and appears to be enjoying playing and communicating with the other players.  They usually interview him after his round and he is very open and honest about his playing.

Patricia, how many hours of daylight are you having now?  I didn't watch the meteor shower but did look at the look at one of the websites.  It seems some people just have to do stupid things around wild animals.  We are having some problems with alligators that people have let loose in small lakes after they brought home a baby alligator and it got big.  We don't have to worry about them as we are quite a ways from a big lake or the river. I do remember when we lived in Alaska driving out away from Anchorage one time and encountering a big, big moose.  We didn't feel comfortable as he was a lot bigger than the little car we had.

MarsGal, that sounds like a nice trip you and your sister have planned.  I have eaten in several Country Kitchen restaurants but am not aware of any of them around here.  They always served a good meal.  How many days will it take you to do this trip.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, that's the kind of day trip I'd like.  We do have a boat on the Grand River but it is across town and doesn't get up near here.  We also have a mystery trip on a train to Coopersville (NW of here) but I'm not a mystery fan.  It really is for younger people and families.

I saw a ship go through the Soo this morning.  I first look at the map to see if there are any ships in the vicinity and if there is one that is near the bridge and going in the right direction, I go to the Soo cam.  It isn't complicated, but I describe things "clear as mud" as I've said before.  I like the Soo scene most because I've been there and can envision in my mind where they are.  I hope if anyone looked at the pictures that it gave a better idea of what goes on.

Now I'm headed for Duluth where I hope a ship is about ready to go out.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I just looked at the Duluth cams, and see that our weather looks the same this morning.  Wonderfully cool and overcast.  Such a pleasant change for us, after months of blazing sun.  We'll still get plenty more sunshine for the next two months, but this is a nice welcome break.

MarsGal, the bus trip with your sister sounds like a lot of fun.  That's a lot to do in one day, so I'm thinking you must be staying somewhere overnight?  Going down the Mississippi River on a paddle wheeler, all the way to New Orleans, has always been high on my bucket list, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to cross that one off . . . as well as all the others on my list.

Mary Ann, I've seen quite a few ships in the Soo Locks, but except for one, they have all been in that second channel.  Hard to really get a good look, unless they're close. I checked the Duluth schedule, and see that the Michicopetin,(sp?) is late or they just haven't removed it from the schedule yet?  Usually they are removed, as soon as they arrive or depart.

Going out for dinner tonight with our son and wife, to a nice little restaurant near us called Aldo's.  Mostly Italian food, which I like.  I'm looking forward to getting out for a change.

Mary Ann

Marilyn and Gloria, the Paul R is on its way toward the Soo and should be there in a few minutes.  Yes, Marilyn, with few exceptions, the ships go through the second channel an I see the near channel is where the tourist boats and service boats go.  I think when/if things get crowded and/or busy, they might use the near channel.  I have an idea the second channel is more convenient to use.

I haven't been on a paddle boat cruise on the Mississippi but I have been on a paddle boat at the Winona dock and we toured the Mississippi Queen one year when I visited my cousin in Mps.  I did take a paddle boat luncheon cruise with Jim when he was in/on Treasure Island several years ago.

Now I'll go see if Paul R is near the locks.  He'll have to be in the lock before he can go through the channel.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

A few minutes has turned into over an hour and Paul still is not at the Soo.  He will have to get into a lock and have the water level raised to Superior height.  When you see a green circle to the left of the small pink circle, Paul will be in position to move through the channel.  But it takes a while so don't hold your breath.

I'm going to take a nap so I may miss Paul going through the channel.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I was too late to see Paul at the Soo Locks.  It was hard to tell, (because he was late) so I checked back a couple of times, but missed him. I've tried to follow the little green boats, and I did locate Paul, but he must have already gone, or was in the process of moving through the locks.

The New York Harbor web cam that streams past the "upside down check mark" had a spectacular view of the heavy clouds over the city last evening with the sun reflecting light on the side of the buildings.  There was even part of a rainbow toward one side.   Wish I could have saved a shot - but, not only is that impossible to do, it's illegal- according to the Warning under the picture.

Mary Ann, I think I'm going to give up on the Soo webcam after looking at the link to the pictures.  I've never caught a large ship going or coming and don't think I'd particularly enjoy seeing them in the far channel.

The Two Harbor Boat Launch webcam is back up!   I appreciate the little side notes that gave information about that. I'm really enjoying that list of cams.

Oklahoma City set all kinds of historical records for one-day rainfall yesterday.  Mainly because two storms merged and "parked" right over the airport where the official measure is.  Lots of heavy flooding in the southwest part of the city.
Clouds looked ominous to my west but my area just had steady rain at intervals - no winds or flooding.  There wasn't as much water in my rain gauge this morning as I expected.  Won't have to water for a while, though.

We have had steady rain since August first, and my poor bones and sinuses are heartily sick of it!! They say that tomorrow will be partly cloudy with only ten percent chance of rain, but I doubt it. I usually add three days to those type of forecasts. Today is another sodden mess.  I'm turning into a habitual grouch. Everything hurts.

We've had two villages that have mud flats, send some folks evacuating here, but other than that, most can stay home or move to closer higher ground.

Marilyne, some of my friends have been out shopping, lunching and other trips as they have cars. With my arthritis, I'd rather not and I don't have the patience or cash to make it a daily habit. I'm an introvert and enjoy these trips as exceptional rather than everyday occurrences. Many friends are also married, retired and are accustomed to two incomes and I am not.

Larry, we've had grey, cloudy skies but according to the weather forecasts, sunrise today will be at 5:38 and sunset at 10:10. Tomorrow will be at 5:41 and sunset at 10:10. Compare that with July thirty-first sunrise and sunset of 4:47 and 11:03.

Marilyne

Callie - I've been frustrated this past week, because I seem to have lost the webcam that streams past the upside-down check mark?  I haven't deleted any webcams on my desktop, so I think that one has changed, or I'm not looking at the right one?  The ones I have of the harbor are live (I can see the water and birds moving as well as small boats), but the camera is fixed on one spot . . . seems to be in the middle?  I would appreciate it if you would post the original streaming one that sweeps back and forth?

Patricia - there are days when I feel like I cannot leave this house for any reason.  Today is one of those days . . . but I'm going to have to drive to Barnes and Noble, and buy my dil a couple of books for her birthday present. (The reason for the dinner out tonight.)  I should have ordered from Amazon, or B&N long ago, but I didn't, and seems that I never learn. Always the last minute scramble! ::)

Marilyne,  it's the Port New York webcam and doesn't always stream - particularly when there's a cruise ship docked.  Right now, it's showing a cruise ship leaving with all the lights on. Info says it's the Sea Princess and is headed for Charleston.

The webcam may start streaming after the cruise ship is out of its range.

I wonder if anyone else saw what I saw on the Duluth canal cam a few minutes ago - The Dance of the Sailboats.  It actually took place in the harbor there and some of it beyond the bridge was fast forwarded, I suppose to save time.  There were people at the edge of the canal watching.  When the sailboats left, they were in regular time, not fast forwarded.  It was unusual and unexpected.

The view at the Soo has been changed and I don't know if it's permanent or if the powers that be decided on a change.  It still shows Karl' Cafe.  I think the new view is more toward the inner works of the locks.  I signed on as the back of the ship was disappearing into the trees.  It was not a good day for ships, although I did see several ships go through the Soo before the scene changed and I saw a ship leave Superior.  Everything seems to be "tomorrow" and by the time I get to tomorrow, the ships will be scheduled for the next "tomorrow"!

I bought covers for my new deck furniture and Tom and I put them on tonight because we have a rainy forecast.  They will be handy for winter.

Today the pier at Grand Haven was to be open to everyone but I saw some equipment there this morning.  It took longer than they expected because some unexpected repair work had to be done.  The catwalk is expected to be replaced next year.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Mary Ann,  what is the URL for the Grand Haven pier and any other web cams there?  I don't think I have them.

Mary Ann

http://surfgrandhaven.com/

Callie, this is the only cam I have for Grand Haven, but I'll try to remember to look for more tomorrow.  The problem with this site is that the trees between the camera and Lake Michigan hide a lot.  You are able to see some of the shore where people play in the water, but a lot is lost.

Grand Haven is where we'd take a Sunday ride, maybe pack a picnic and we'd sit on the beach.  Norm and I would go in the water, my dad might but my mother would not!  We'd walk the pier but the catwalk was up then and with my dad, we'd walk up there.  Later when I was older, the catwalk was closed to the public because it was deemed unsafe.  It was a fun time.

Hi Everyone. Our morning starts out overcast but we are to see some sun today as well as clouds and a chance of rain is back in the forecast.  It is suppose to be in the mid 90's this afternoon.  Yesterday was a quiet day here.  Around 4 pm Scott arrived and we visited until it was time to go to dinner at Diablo's.  Once again we all enjoyed our Tex-Mex meal.  He didn't stay very late last evening.  The girls did not join us for dinner.  Today will be my typical Thursday.  I will stop at the Walmart Pharmacy to pick up a new medicated shampoo prescription.  My co-pay on this medication is over $50.  I am staggered that any shampoo can be so expensive and I sure hope it works.  Then I will pick up my friend and we will go to coffee.  After I bring him home I will again stop at the grocery pickup area and pick up the grocery order that Pat placed yesterday.  This will be the first time since this closer Walmart started offering this service.  Scott plans to be here at 11:30 to help unload the car although I told him it was't necessary but he wanted to come and help.  It will be nice to spend a little time with him two days in a row as usually it is only one day.

I did not sleep very well last night after the first 4 yours.  After laying there for a couple of hours I got up and worked a jigsaw puzzle on my laptop and then went back to bed and slept fitfully the rest of the night.  There was no particular reason but it just was the situation.

Marilyne, I never made a bucket list but it would have been a good idea.  I did get to quite a few states on business that you don't get to see much on such trips as I would usually just fly in and then fly back out.  Travel for us is now out of the question.  Glad you got to go out to dinner.  I like Italian food but my wife is not found of it.  We have a nice Italian restaurant downtown but we have gone there only once since we moved here.  I hope your trip to Barnes & Noble cheered you up yesterday.  It is easy to get involved when looking at new books.  Did you know in advance which books you were going to buy?

Mary Ann, I have never been on a paddle boat.  One time in Florida we took an hour and a half boat ride out to one of the Keys, in Ocean City we took a boat across Cape May to Atlanta City (a miserable day as there was no place to sit down unless you were gambling).

Callie, how would someone enforce the fact that someone took a screen shot for the cam picture as long as it was for personal use.  That must have been quite a storm you all had.  It is nice not to do the outside watering.

Patricia, you all are certainly not in a drought with all of that rain.  Sorry that such weather makes your arthritis and sinuses act up.  It is hard not to be grouchy with everything hurts.  Is your cat staying hidden when you are grouchy?  :)

Mary Ann

Larry, as far as I know, the paddle boat I was on was not a gambling boat, at least I didn't see any; maybe being a luncheon cruise made a difference.  We sat near the paddles and at one time when making a turn, the paddles went in different directions (there were two paddle wheels).  I got a video of the action.

I had expected we'd have rain overnight but we got none and looking at radar, the rain is south of us and headed northeast.  Lower Eastern Michigan might get rain, but not Western Michigan.  Tom and I put the new covers on the deck furniture last night just in case.

It is Thursday and I know it is Thursday and the lawn guys are here today as they are supposed to be.

Now I have to see if I can resurrect the Soo cam site.  I don't know if it was the new scene they put up or if the Windows 10 update did it.  And I don't know if I'm the only one affected.  Questions, questions!!!

Mary Ann, that is the way you turn a wheelchair almost on the spot, by turning one wheel forward and the opposite one backward.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I'm not getting the Soo Locks webcam at all!  Just a plain white page, with "SAULT STE. MARIE LIVE CAMERA AT KARL'S CUISINE CAFE", written at the top, but the rest of the cam is blank.  Last night when I read your message, I looked, and I was getting the locks from a different angle.  It looked like the camera was facing into the locks, instead of straight across like it was originally.  I'm hoping that my blank screen is just temporary, and that they are working on it?

Mary Ann

That's interesting, Bubble, because I did not know that was possible to do on a wheelchair.  I guess I never wondered about it, or forgot because we had a wheelchair for my grandmother.  She died in 1951 and I'm sure science has made many improvements since then.  I'm glad to know that and when/if I see a person in a wheelchair, I'll pay attention if they turn a corner.

I learn something new every day (and Rick included this in his sayings not too long ago).

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I'm getting error messages and I asked Tom to check and he gets the same thing.  I'm on my second message so I think they are working on it.  Keep trying and maybe soon we'll be able to ride a freighter again.

I did see a ship go into the Two Harbors harbor a while ago.

The Soo site is working at the new site.  As I look at it there is a ship in the channel and I think it may be in a lock.  I'm not sure about that.
