Mary Ann - sounds like today will be a busy one for you, and a sad one too.  I think it's so nice that Jan's former church has, the Memory Garden, where Terry's ashes can be put to rest.

Nothing happening here today.  I plan to get to Walgreen's later, and stock up on a long list of OTC items that I've run out of, such as Tylenol, eye drops, band aids, etc. We'll probably have sandwiches and canned soup for dinner tonight, as neither of us feels like going to the grocery store.

I hope we hear from some S&F members who haven't posted in a while?

Good morning from the as usual Interior. We have progressed from steady all day rains to partly cloudy days with rain and heavy winds in the evenings. Farrah has deserted the couch to claim a green camp chair I had received for my birthday.

MaryAnn, it will be sad but also nice to formally lay Terry to rest both physically and mindfully. My daughter's ashes lie in our church's sacristy, but there are other local ways, as well as a Memorial Garden where you may plant a tree for a loved one or for those who had meaning such as an accident or drunk driving victims. One of the ones locally has had people on their own put the ashes at the roots of the newly planted tree.

I haven't gotten to any of the webcams this past week due to other things going on. Classes began again in September, and there has been some local stuff happening that has kept me busier than I'd like.

Mary Ann

We had a nice ceremony to bury Terry's ashes.  Since his son Geoff was here last week, I think they took some of the ashes to Lake Michigan.  I don't know how or what they did there - at Holland.  Today, daughter Erin was there and she had a small bottle that she buried.  I had just assumed the church has a Memory Garden but they don't.  There was a small area just outside the church where they dug up a small hole and Erin put the bottle in there, covered it with dirt and put a cover over that and more dirt on that to complete things.

At one time, Tom and Terry used to meet for breakfast at Cheers, once a week.  Later I joined them and after that Jan joined us when she could.  Actually, that was the start of our family luncheons, at first weekly, now once in a while.  Jan wanted to have us get together yet afterward and asked where Terry and Tom used to have breakfast.  I mentioned Cheers, so we went there for lunch and Jan treated us.  It was a very nice time and it was good to see everyone.  We all miss Terry because he was a neat person.

Good afternoon, in another rainy day

Mary Ann will be thinking of you and family with a little pray added

Larry, you meals sounded so good.  We go to a place called JR's which on Tuesday is senior day, and you get a fall course meal for $12.  i always get the lobster bisque, sm. steak and cheese cake. I generally bring half the steak home.

Patricia. what a lovely idea to plant a tree, we bought a bench to put beside Dennis.s grave

Thanks, Gloria, it was just a small family gathering.  I was glad to be included.  I really feel close to all of my great-nieces and nephews.  I feel fortunate to have them.  And now I have 2x greats!  I hope I live long enough for them to know who I am.  I doubt I'll live long enough for them to remember me in their older years.

We are having an overcast day with the temperature about 80 degrees.  When I look at radar, there is a storm headed this way, but it has to cope with Lake Michigan and the lake often sends storms in different directions.  We do need the rain badly.

I'm watching the Wyndham golf match in NC.  Snedeker is ahead and I'd like to see him win as I haven't seen him win in a long time.

Mary Ann

Lindancer

Mary Ann,it would be nice if snedeker would win. I think it been a long time since he did. It has been in the low 70's to day.

Mary Ann

Gloria. as you must know by now, Snedeker did win.  He seems such a modest person.

It is cooling off here tonight and it should be a good night for sleeping.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Morning all.

Not much has been happening in my neck of the woods -- except the RAIN. A more to come today in the form of drizzle, and some more tomorrow. After that, it is supposed to be dry for a while.

The Farmer's Almanac is predicting a warm, wet winter. Gosh, I hope won't have to be mowing the lawn half the winter, but I guess it is better than a cold, snowy winter. Well, yes and no. Warm winters mean some bugs are not killed off, and it doesn't do for the orchard trees.

A little later this morning I am off to pay my real estate taxes and do some grocery shopping.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, in my Random Image to the left of this box is a picture of Shan, your little cutie.

Looking at radar, there is a wide storm band in Illinois and the way it is moving, it looks as if it will go north and we might get a little rain, but not much.  When storms get to Lake Michigan, anything can happen, mostly storms dissipate and we get nothing.  We're not as bad as out west, but we do need rain.

The start of another week and I have no idea what I'll do, but I'll find something to get into.

Hi Everyone.  It looks like we will have a bit cooler day today with the chance of afternoon and evening showers.  The only think I have planned for today is a trip to Costco.  I am going to get a rotisserie chicken and we are going to eat out main meal today at noon while the chicken is still hot.  The rest of the day will be quiet and restful.

Marilyne, hope you made it to Walgreen's yesterday.  It seems like we run out of several things all at once.  At least that makes the trip worthwhile to replenish.

Patricia, you have certainly not had good weather this whole month.  I bet Farrah thinks your green camp chair was just for her.  What classes will you be taking starting in September.

Mary Ann, I am glad you were able to attend the nice ceremony to bury Terry's ashes.  The burying of the small bottle was interesting.  I have been been in a Church that had a Memory Garden or that type of thing.  I guess the Columnbarium is the same idea.  Nice of Jan to treat you all to your meal after the ceremony.  I watched the Wyndham golf match yesterday afternoon and it was close until the other player goofed up on the last whole and then Snediker ended it in a fine way with a birdie.

deAngel, your JR's sounds like they have the same type of meal offer and yours is even a dollar less expensive.  I am sure we will take this offer again in the future as they apparently offer it at least once a month.  When the manager stopped at our table she indicated the offer had been very successful for their business.  Did you see Snedeker's children at the end as they greeted their father.

MarsGal, are things still very green up your way?  We are beginning to see the green lose some of its color but that is not due to the lack of rain.  We didn't have any yesterday.  The first year we moved to Georgia I had to mow my yard on Christmas Eve.  It was not what I really wanted to do on Christmas Eve.  It is always painful too pay the real estate taxes but feels good to have that no longer hanging over one's head.

Marilyne

Good morning to everyone who looks in. :)  The weather is the same as it's been for weeks . . . the temperature will be in the 90's, and the air will be thick with smoke.  No wind off the ocean, as predicted a few days ago.  The fires North of us and East toward Yosemite, are all under control now, but still burning, so the smoke drifts and accumulates here and simply does not move.  When I went out yesterday, I saw  people wearing face masks.  School has started here, and lots of warnings or precautions about outside recess and sports activities.

Larry - the rotisserie chickens from Costco, are delicious, and the price is hard to beat. I don't know how they can sell them for only $4.99, and still make money.  They're BIG, and so tender you could cut them with a fork.

Patricia - I'm so envious of both your rain and your wind.  Washington and Oregon have been cool and wet this summer also, but here we sit . . . hot and dry.  Arizona has higher temps than we have, but they get the summer monsoon rains to clear the air and bring some much needed water.  You mentioned that you will be taking classes, come September?  Are they online, or will you be going to a local community college or other venue?

Mary Ann - You had a busy day yesterday, so today you can just take it easy. I don't mind staying home for a few days, as long as we have a reasonable selection of things to eat for the three meals.  Lately I've been opening the fridge and just standing there, staring at the mostly empty selves. Nothing but milk, butter and eggs!  ::)  The cupboard is a little better, as we do have cereal, and some canned soups, tuna, etc.  I'll have some oatmeal for breakfast, and then think about going to the store for something interesting for later.

Larry, I think Terry's ashes were buried on the "installment plan".  Last week his son, Geoff, and family were here from California and I heard Jan say they were going to Holland State Park to spread Terry's ashes.  I don't know what they did, if they rented a boat or found a place to dig a hole - or what!!!  Erin could not be here last week and it was for her that they had a small container that she buried in a place behind the church where Jan attended growing up.  I did expect a larger amount of ashes, but I wasn't asked.  The above is only my assumption based on what I heard and what I saw.

Marilyn, I am quite used to staying inside but as I no longer drive and as I cannot walk any distance, I am used to it.  In decent weather, I do try to sit on the deck and also go after the mail.  Other than walking about the house, that is my exercise for any day.  I try to have the house open during the day until it gets hot enough for the a/c to go on.  Then the doors are closed.  Cats are not like dogs that require walking so my time with Kendrick is on the deck.  He does like attention.

It is warming up now but still is lower than 80 degrees.  I have the thermostat set at 77 degrees now and if it gets too warm, I'll lower it to 76.  I don't think the storm in Iowa is going to get here; it seems to be going north and we might get the tail end of the storm, which will not be much.

I saw one ship in the Soo and I think I missed a couple coming in to Duluth but I had to get dressed sometime in that span.

People are walking the pier at Grand Haven and there are people in the water.  The site says the air temp is 74 degrees and the water temp is 75 degrees.  Ideal.

I forgot to mention a funny movie that we watched last night.  What's Up Doc? , from 1972, starring Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, and a whole bunch of recognizable character actors from that era.  I don't remember when I last laughed out loud, while watching a movie, but none that I've seen in recent years, come even close to being as funny as this one.  My opinion of course, so others may not enjoy it as much as I did.
It was pretty slapstick, which I usually don't care for - but this one was done right.  It's probably available On Demand, if anyone is interested.

Yes Larry, it is very green here. Even the white pines in my backyard, which usually by this time of year have yellowing pine needles, are a lush green. This may .e only the second time I've see them so green. They must really like this wet weather.

After tomorrow we are going to have a string of dry weather and lower humidity, but it will still be close to 80 most days.

I've been heavy into reading since most of my book holds, even though I strung out putting them on hold, have come in almost all at once. I've got two going and thee more to read. There is only one more on hold, but there are two people ahead of me for each copy.

angelface555

Good afternoon from the Interior with the same weather, same cat and a sense of reawakening which always seems integral to Autumn.

Marilyne, while I sympathize with your smoke, (I do live in a fire driven ecology arboreal forest); I wouldn't wish 40 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts and sodden, dripping wet bush for weeks on anyone.

Marilyne, Larry, my classes are online. I did try in the past, senior free auditing classes at the University. I also did some types at the local Employment Center and adult education classes around town. I quickly realized these weren't working due to times scheduled, bus hours, taxi fees, inability to coordinate rides with classmates or just happenstance.  While I finished the classes, I knew better than to attempt that route again. And yes I'm addicted to classes, always have been. I attribute it to my"magpie" state of mind.

I'm almost always doing some sort of PSP class and some sort of writing class. Along with that, I have four years invested in classes such as those by Udemy.com and podcasts or Ted talks. I realize not everyone shares my interests and I've had people return my, (to me interesting); links with "Why not a few puppy or kitten videos?" One person asked why I would want to know and I replied back, why was she studying Latin and conjugating verbs?

My classes for this fall are;

40 Days of Focus to Improve Productivity and Goal Setting

Brain Washed: 7 Day Mental Detox

Addiction Training: Break Negative Patterns In Your Life, CBT for Depression, Anxiety, Phobias and Panic Attacks

The Daily Routines of 12 Famous Writers

How to disagree well: 7 of the best and worst ways to argue

In the past, I studied types of abnormal personalities, the inability of those with entrenched dogma to understand another point of view, and why certain misconceptions or split second happenstance has changed history. You can see why the suggestion of more puppy or kitten videos...

Mary Ann

Patricia, although I don't share your interests, at least those you posted here, I would not challenge them.  We all are different, thank goodness, and what a dull world we'd have if we all thought alike.  I might like a kitten video, but once I've seen it, I don't look again.  I have some light classical music on my TV and use it as background music.  Neither Tom nor Annie appreciate my taste.  But Tom lives downstairs and I rarely hear his music.  Annie doesn't live here now, but she would always turn off my bathroom radio that I had on constantly; she would be getting ready for her day and would not be home until late.  Not everyone cares about genealogy nor is everyone interested in cross stitch (which I no longer do).  And just because I have a cat named after a rap star, I am not a fan of rap!  To wrap this up, I admire your interests, I just do not share them.  We're a couple of Independents!

Mary Ann

Patricia, that sounds like a heavy load to me. Like Mary Ann, I have my radio se t on The Goodies but Oldies I do a lot of light reading (I like Antebellum books) and ofcourse a lot of crafts, belonging to Homemakers, which start in about 2 weeks.  Keeps me out of trouble

UPDATE:  Candy went to see a surgeon today.  They talked for quite awhile and then he examined her.  He asked her what she thought it was and she told him she thought it was an infection and it was coming out all over her body.  He agreed with her.   Nice to finally find some who listens.  Anyway she has to have a CT Scan to check for blockages to be safe and then they can take care of this poor gals misery.  FINALLY

Mary Ann

Joan, I hope the CT shows what Candy's problem is and the docs can get rid of the problem.  She's suffered long enough.  Nice to find a doc who listened.

Mary Ann

wjoan

mary Ann, thanks.   Yes, it is about time someone did.  She has started bleeding from her abdomen on the outside.  Scary.

Marilyne

Joan - sounds like Candy's problem has escalated, and has become more serious.  I'm glad she is seeing a doctor who is interested, and will get to the cause.  I hope she has the CT scan ASAP!

wjoan

Marilyne, thanks.  Me too.  She has suffered since the beginning of the year.

MarsGal

Joan, I too hope that they are finally getting somewhere with Candy's problem and soon find a solution.

Patricia, you are much more heavily involved in various studies than I. Right now, I have pretty much confined myself to Latin through SeniorLearn's online classes. I also read up on Roman history on my own. Occasionally, I do free online classes offered by some of the top colleges, including Yale Professor Diane Kleiner's course on Roman Architecture. I have one sitting in my cue on Dante's Inferno which I hope to read along with the lecture series. I also watch various YouTube programs on physics (in an futile effort to understand Quantum theory at a very rudimentary level), cosmology, and other ongoing space related works such as PBS's SpaceTime.

Other than that, I do searches on whatever piques my interest, like following the travels of various fictional and non-fictional characters and events by researching them online while reading a book. My most memorable efforts involved following Oliver Twist around London, and Richard Henry Dana, Jr. on his voyage on a merchant ship in "Two Years Before the Mast". Dana later became a noted authority on Maritime Law.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  it is another overcast morning but we will be only in the high 80's late this afternoon and a less than 50% chance of rain.  I guess the highlight of my day yesterday was the quick trip to Costco yesterday morning and then yesterday afternoon I purchased a small 7 cubic feet freezer.  It is to be delivered sometime today between 8 am and 12 pm.  We will put it in our garage now that we are down to one car.  It will take awhile to get it stocked up.  We have to let it set for 48 hours before turning it on as it lets the gases resettle from having been moved.

I did enjoy watching a special Antiques Road Show program that took pieces from program back several years ago and at the end of the segment it showed the appraised value then and then again in 2014.  It was a special for the South Carolina Public Television Station's fund raising evening.

Today should be a pretty quiet day. We plan to have a salad supper tonight.  It is easy to do and healthy and Pat made a super dessert Sunday evening that will really top off the meal.

Marilyne, I can't imagine having to deal with that smoke in the air day after day.  Glad to read they have the fires in your area under control.  They had a story on the national news last night about the above and beyond things the firefighters were doing such as one fireman watered the garden for the family that had to evacuate and another had feed pets and animals left behind.  I expect the chickens at Costco are loss leaders just like their $1.50 foot long hot dog or sausage and a drink. I think I read they haven't raised those prices since they first opened their stores.  I am always amazed at how neat and clean they keep everything.  I have certainly not complained about any of the rain we have had and continue to have.  For a number of years this part of the country suffered the droughts and water shortages. We have never budgeted as such but we had our priorities in that the first was adequate food and the second was our home and utilities and then other items as needed.  Pat has always been superb about not overspending.

Mary Ann, I had to chuckle about the "installment plan" comment you made.  I hope the family found peace with the way they handled Terry's ashes.  I have a goal of at least 1,000 steps a day and usually get more.  My phone tracks my steps so it is easy to keep track of and sometimes I do extra walking here in the house to be sure I meet that target.  That many steps is equivalent to 1/2 miles although I doubt that it actually would cover that distance since I no longer take long steps.

MarsGal, it sounds like your area is about like ours in terms of being green although we are beginning to see the green fade a bit from the grass and trees.  I seldom ask to have a book put on hold as my experience has also been like your in that two or more become available at the same time.  Glad you have and are enjoying the Latin classes.  I am sure Ginny is a wonderful Latin teacher.  While I didn't take any classes I did work closely with Ginny for a number of years in the behind the scenes work on the Books discussions on SeniorNet and we had the opportunity to meet a couple of times. We can find out about just anything anymore online.

Patricia, that is some list of courses you are doing.  Are they all 8 week courses?  I had hoped when I retired that I could attend courses at our local colleges but my health interfered and I never did.  I have done several courses online but just don't have the energy to tackle them anymore.  I still like to learn and have wide interests.  I have watched a few of the Ted talks.

deAngel, so nice that you can still enjoy your reading and crafts and participate in your Homemakers groups.  We sure don't want you getting into trouble!  :)

Joan, as others have already said it is about time some doctor is willing to take charge of Candy's case and see about dealing with her health issues.

Mary Ann

My "higher" education is nil - I did go to one semester of college but my mother died and I did not want to return so I applied for and got an office job with the company where I spent the next 43+ years.  But I did learn about osmosis from Jim many years ago.  He showed me how it worked then I had to tell him what he had told me.  I passed muster on that one, but don't ask me to explain it now.

I am having trouble with my eyes so it is difficult to read on the computer, let alone a magazine or book.  My optometrist told me she had done all she could.  She also told me I would not go blind, but not being able to read anything easily is for the birds.  That is why it is so nice when others bold their posts.

Tom hasn't been Ubering this summer because he felt teachers would take over.  Now that school has started in many cases, he probably will start up again.  The recruiting of semi drivers is difficult.

We had a nice rain last night and may get more today.  I did not hear any storm and that was good.  It is muggy and I have the air set to go on, but the outside air is under 70 degrees and I don't want to set the thermostat so low that we freeze in here - just to get rid of humidity.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Patricia and MarsGal - I admire both of you, for your ongoing desire to learn . . .  and such a variety of fascinating subjects!  I graduated college with a Journalism degree, and English minor.  Since the the tech boom started in the 90's. journalism has changed drastically, and is nothing like it was back when I worked in newspaper world.

The emphasis is no longer on the written word, but now is focused on broadcast journalism, or social media . . . i.e., watching people talk, argue, and give their opinion on any given subject . . . and of course the ever present online opinion piece, or the CNN "breaking news!"  Everybody trying to grab your attention and influence you to their way of seeing a situation. The whole thing depresses me so much now, so I rarely watch or read the news. (except for local issues.) I often wonder if, or how, journalism is taught in schools now?  Surely my old professors, are turning over in their graves, to see the state of "news" in today's world. :(

Well, time to get moving around here.  Daughter Sandy has the day off today, and is coming over to do her laundry, so will be here a good part of the day.  I always look forward to spending time with her, and hearing about her week.  Most likely, we'll go out somewhere for either lunch or dinner, depending on when she gets here.

How about that, Marilyne, we keep finding connections. I spent three years with Rodale Institute where I was an "Information Associate". Occasionally, I would find a letter from a farmer who had a question or comment that I passed on to the chief editor of The New Farm Magazine. I also wrote one two paragraph blurb that was included in one of the Institute's newsletters. My supervisor's promise to teach me Pagemaker and to help her more with publication of the newsletter never came about, however. The last 19 years of my working life was at Fry Communications where I worked in the pre-press department. Yes, the advent of .pdf documents, direct to plate and near the end of my work there, direct to press and online publishing, served to pretty much obsolete my work there. Most of my work was now taken over by the publication's production department. I was not about to try and take on working with the high speed, quick print presses that were installed to handle small lot and on demand printing. Fast]paced, third-shift, and mostly standing work did not appeal to my increasing arthritic back. I am not particularly mechanically adept or speedy.

My sister just informed me that we will now be able to see the smoke from the California fires here in PA - if ever the clouds clear off.

Mary Ann

I used to keep score for the Men's Bowling League at our company and my claim to journalism fame was that I wrote the story for the newspaper - and it was published!  And I don't know how "high speed" they were, but my father was the printing (presses) teacher for our high school and I printed the basketball and football tickets for home games for the years that I was in high school.  I did take journalism in high school, but as I recall, only one semester.  A lot of water has gone over the dam since I was in high school doing those activities.  78 years!

Mary Ann

Mary Ann, in the 9th grade I had to take an elective.  My choices were Wood Shop, Print Shop, Cooking or Sewing!  The power saws scared me in Wood Shop, I already knew how to cook - I could put a full meal on the table when I was 10, I hated anything to do with sewing so Print Shop was it!

I loved the Print Shop class.  We learned to hand set type for the school newspaper and flyers and even learned to use the printing press. I took Journalism in my sophomore and junior years, wrote for the newspaper, and was on the Ad Staff in my senior year.  I debated taking journalism in college, but American History was my first love.

Good morning from the Interior, nothing new to report there!

Larry, some of the classes are four weeks and some longer. The CBT is the culmination of a four-year endeavor. I have a four year European History degree from 1970 and an associate's degree in how medieval city-states progressed to countries through warfare and amalgamation of various cultures. I have another associate's in bookkeeping and small business administration although I doubt if I've used any in my multiple employments.

Marilyne, the Brain Washed: 7 Day Mental Detox, is for exactly what you were posting about. It is for those seeking to look and evaluate through the hype to the dregs of truth underneath. This country has been polarized by those on all sides attempting to demonize any other viewpoint and play to the fears and or ignorance of their supporters. They no longer have reporters or news readers but "commentators."

In school, classes were segregated by sex with shop and printing for boys with home ec. the only option for girls. I would have loved printing! I took several sociology and anthropology classes as well as literature and writing classes. I did get into campaigning for others to get into office which involved writing some slogans and publicity but never got into journalism as I liked being behind the scenes.

Then, of course, I met a guy and unfortunately got my MRS. degree just as Vietnam became a reality in my life and not just a rally point. As others have said, that seems so long ago now, fifty years next May.

Almost my entire employment has been in middle management in retail and hotels. Middle management, stuck between staff and corporate is not a comfortable place to be as you are continually buffeted from both sides.

For three years when I worked at our local job centre, my position was to hold workshops for those wishing to learn about resumes, office politics, procedures and how to acquire various licenses such as CBLs. It was my only job outside of the hotels and retail, and I wasn't suited for it. :( I discovered tension headaches while working there!😒

Gloria, you have had such a wide variety of interests, hobbies, and positions throughout the years! I envy you! I've never been good at teaching as my frustrations come out.

I truly envy all of you! As I was reading through the posts, my magpie inclinations were lighting up all through my brain, and I had to mentally slap my hand and say no!  ::)
