Gloria, I did read about your mouse in the toilet.  At least it was easy to get rid of it.  Some time ago, Kendrick was jumping all over in this computer room.  I have some boxes on the floor and he was in and around them.  I finally saw he had a baby mouse and the mouse was coiled up in a circle.  I called to Tom and by the time he got up here, the mouse had disappeared.  Later I saw the cat in the dining room and there was a strange thing on the floor.  The light was not good so I couldn't really see what it was, but I touched it and decided it was the mouse.  I picked it up with a napkin and put it outside and that's the last we saw of the mouse.  Recently there was activity in the flower bed and Kendrick had a baby bird which he brought to me and even got it into the house.  Tom tried to pick it up with a plastic plate and I finally gave him a napkin to pick it up with.  He took it outside and that's the last we saw of the bird.  My neighbor said a bird had a nest in her hanging basket and that probably is where the bird came from.

I'm watching PGA golf now and they are in South Korea.  It is nearly 8 pm and the program will be on until 9 pm - in case you want to watch them.  Some well known players are on the tour.

MarsGal

When I fed Shan this morning, he came right out of hiding without waiting for me to leave. He ate and then pranced over to me for some hugs and affection. Fast progress indeed. I truly hate having to keep him separated.

Found this item in my online local newspaper this morning. http://www.pennlive.com/news/2017/10/shelter_cats_get_second_chance.html#incart_river_home_pop Yesterday, there was an article about Philadelphia being one of two Rattiest cities in the US, so this project should be a help.

Weather is staying on the warm side for a few more days at least.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is a another beautiful day here with clear skies and as of now 57 degrees but headed into the low 80's this afternoon.  This morning I had an 8 am appointment with the eye doctor to do more measurements on my eyes and schedule the surgery.  I was home before 9 am.  The housekeeper is here this morning and around noon Pat and I will drop one of her new shoes off at the shoe store to have it stretched overnight and then go on down the street to the Honey on the Rock Restaurant to have our main meal of the day.  That will be plenty for us to do on one day.

Mary Ann, I guess Kendrick thought you had slept long enough and needed to give him some attention with the 5 am wake up paw on your cheek.  I hope you find the mattress you like today.

Marilyne, a few months before our cat died we had him at the vets and she said she heart a heart murmur and that we might want to take him to a cat cardiologist.  That just wasn't going to happen and I had no idea that they had such specialists. We hate those fitted sheets, especially the folding part.  Fortunately our housekeeper changes them for us but on occasion Pat will want hers changed in between housecleaning sessions and it is hard to get it on the mattress as she uses a special padding on her side of the mattress.  We have the twin beds that are adjustable but fit on a king size head frame so we can get in between the beds to fix the covers, etc.

deAngel, what are we going to do with you.  What a party girl.  :)  It sounds like you had a nice party and to be an honored guest.

MarsGal, it sounds like Shan is adjusting well and will be a very nice pet.  Interesting article and it brings me back to my youth on the farm where we always had cats around to catch the mice in the barn and around the farm.  Of course, my mother wouldn't allow a cat or dog in the house until in her later life her sister gave her a little poodle and everything changed.

Mary Ann

Tom just came up the stairs and said he was taking a friend of Dot's to the ER.  I don't know how things got so far from home.  The friend has a son living with her but I'm not sure he is allowed to drive now (he's a card short of a full deck), she must have called Dot and Dot probably did not want to drive to the ER so suggested Tom who will drive anywhere.

Larry, one thing Kendrick does not have is a clock because he is likely to jump on my bed at any time during the night, whether I'm asleep or not.  Then he will jump over me from one side to the other and eventually settle down by my left side and he goes to sleep.  I do not!  When/if I move, he leaves.  He also leaves if I cough.  Then he will come back in about 10 minutes and we go through it again.  He sleeps much of the day so is more awake at night.

Dot just called and I heard a bit more about her friend, Else.  She thinks she had a stroke a week ago but is being treated for a stomach ache (that doesn't sound right, but that's what Dot said).  The son does live with his mother in the downstairs and is a PITA!  He does almost nothing for her, but blood is thicker than water.  Dot is lost once she gets out of the north end of town and Else needed to go to Blodgett Hospital (where I have gone for my emergencies) and Dot doesn't know how to get there.  So Else called Tom and Tom is taking her to the Blodgett ER!  Stay tuned.

Mary Ann - As I said a couple of days ago, Tom is a very kind and helpful man!  I doubt that he ever says no, when someone asks him for a ride, or for support.  That reminds me - what happened with his friend in Holland?  Was she granted custody of the child, or did her ex get custody?

Your description of Kendrick, and his jumping around your bed at night, is the reason why I closed the hall door, so Winnie could not get into the bedroom at night. He acted just like Kendrick, jumping back and forth and walking on me, etc.  When he finally settled down, then I would roll over or barely move, and he would start in again.  I'm a light sleeper (a poor sleeper) in the best of circumstances, so I finally had to keep him out of the bedroom.  When I got up in the morning, then he would usually settle down somewhere on the bed, and sleep soundly for a couple of hours. Cats are nocturnal, so it's natural for them to be awake and alert during the night.

angelface555

One thing different about cats is they have what is called binocular vision which is good for a predator. They have a different type of color blindness also related to being nocturnal as Marilyne says.

The above link is fascinating as it gives a view on how cats see the world.

We understand that the walking around the bed is an invitation to get up and play, but did you know that rubbing against a person is there a way of marking that person as family? A cat's world is defined by scent and scent marking is a cat's way of determining home, family and territory.

And those gifts of dead and not so dead birds, mice and sometimes rabbits is a cat's way of attempting to provide for the family. It isn't a good idea to yell at a cat for trying to help provide for their family. It is simpler and kinder to dispose of the items without making a fuss quietly.

Marilyn, the judge in Holland (a woman judge) wants them to go to mediation.  I don't know how long that will take.  The son is only 13 so there are many years ahead that he will want to live with his father.  Tom's friend is a teacher by training and has been unable to find a job around here.  I think she has ties to Virginia and at one time could have gotten a good paying job there, but that is a few years ago.  However, she cannot take the boy out of the state.  I can see when he is 18 that he'll just up and go to his father.

I know cats are nocturnal and Kendrick isn't doing anything unusual.  It's just that we don't operate on the same schedule and neither of us is going to change!

Tom just came home and left Else at the hospital because the doctor wants her to be tested to see if she really had a stroke.  Her son refused to take her to the hospital which is why she called Tom.  Her daughter will go to the hospital to be with her for the test.

As far as marking is concerned, I am marked - so many times that Kendrick can't disown me!

Patricia, I am using an ad blocker which I refuse to disable so I could not read the article about cat vision.

We're going mattress shopping soon so I must get ready.  I am sure we'll have lunch out too.

New computer locked me out Tues. evening while I was cooking dinner.  Son just got me bac on.

angelface555

MaryAnn, basically the photo shown was clear in the first "human" photo and the second, made as a cat would see, looked as if a thick film had been applied. Cats see blues, greens, and grays.

Mary Ann

Kendrick does like my blue slacks and I have the cat hair on them to prove it.  He also likes my burgundy and black slacks, also coated with cat hair.  Sometimes you can't see the slacks for the cat hair!  I have to brush things before I leave the house.

Well, I bought a mattress - a firm foam mattress with a memory foam top.  It is about 8-inches thick and will come with a thinner box.  They will be delivered Monday afternoon so I should have time to get some things out of the way.

Afterward Tom and I went to the grocery store.  I had not been there in ages and bought some things Tom might not have bought - cube steaks, hamburg patties, ground round.  I forgot chicken thighs but Tom said we have some anyway.  Tom had the list and he goes one way and I go the other and we finish quicker that way.  I did not get to the frozen foods which I like to look at, but we bought enough.  We did not spend more than what Tom has spent in the past.  Actually I buy the groceries and pay him back if he buys them without my debit card.

I am watching a golf tour from Richmond Va and there are several well-known players on the tour.  I have an idea another tour is in Koala Lumpur and will air tonight.

My computer said our temperature is 78 degrees, almost unheard of in this part of October.  I do remember one year when I was still working downtown and had an office at the center of town that Princess Juliana of the Netherlands was in town; it was November and the temp was 83 degrees.  It was HOT!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

wjoan - I wondered where you were . . . good to see you're back!

Another one missing for a couple of weeks now, is JeanneP?  She might be  visiting her daughter in Texas?

Mary Ann - You were more than 10 degrees warmer today, than we were. It only reached 65 here, and then dropped back down to about 63.  We actually had what the weather people call a "light rain" last night.  I would call it a slight sprinkle or a mist.  Did not measure at all in our rain gauge.  The good news, is that there was more rain in the North Bay Area, where the fires are still burning, so that should help in putting them out for good.  Glad you got your new mattress.

I finally got down to Walgreen's today,  to get my flu shot.  I had decided to get the "extra strength" dose for seniors this year for the first time.  Good intentions, but bad timing!  They were out of the super shot, so I settled for the regular one.

Carol

We were told to look for planet Uranus last night but couldn't find it for a milky fog was in the sky.

I hand sprayed ammonia over spots where the pesky javalinas are meeting in the back yard.  It is hard to tell if it makes any difference.  It is windy this afternoon and this place is all closed up because of the allergies I have suddenly developed this year.  Every day this month, this area of Tucson has been about 10 degrees above normal and this won't change until the last day.

Glad to hear that some rain is easing the pain in northern California.

Mary Ann has sent the latest picture of her twin great nieces - Norm's great grandchildren.  Aren't they sweet?

Marilyne, thanks.  :)  Sure missed every one.  Nice to be back online.

Mary Ann

Jeanne Lee, thank you so much.  The girls were 8 months old on the 7th of October.  They were born two months early.  Jo weighed a pound more than Ellie and the difference is still about the same.  I see them occasionally because they live about 40 miles from me.  Tom, who lives with me, is their grandfather.

I thought this was such a cute picture, I just had to share it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, they are adorable!  A little bit of that bright red hair showing! :)

halkel

Mary Ann, they look like cute little dolls.

FlaJean

Mary Ann, they are so cute.  My, they have really grown.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is 57 degrees here this morning but a bright and sunny low 80's day. This should be a pretty quiet day.  I will go pick up Pat's shoe that we took to have stretched yesterday.  We did enjoy a delicious lunch at Honey from the Rock restaurant.

Last evening my Chromebook stopped working.  I told Pat I knew what I wanted for Christmas and that is a new laptop but will likely get an early Christmas present.  I brought down her old laptop that she has in her sewing room and it spent all evening downloading and installing the latest Windows Updates.  This morning it is working reasonably well but think I am going to have to use the Explorer browser as the Chrome browser keeps locking the computer up.  So today I will be setting up the bookmarks I want to use in the Explorer.  It looks like there should be some good football games on this afternoon.

Mary Ann, hard to believe a son wouldn't take his mother to the ER if he has a driver's license.  Glad to see you got your new mattress and hope it gives you many nights of great rest.

Marilyne, we kept our cat out on our sun porch at night until it would get close to freezing and then we put him in the garage as didn't want him roaming the house at night.  I hope your area does get more rain.

Patricia, I have always had to question in my mind how anyone really knows what an animal sees along with a lot of other things that we are told.  I do see the logic of the cat bringing in food for the family with their catches.

Joan, what brand of computer did you get?  I bet it was downloading and installing the latest updates to Windows 10 like I experienced last evening.  Do you use a desktop or laptop computer?

Jeanne, I totally agree with you that the twins are precious and that was a great picture of Tom's grandchildren.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone from the cool,
buy crisp and sunny,  rocky coast of Maine.

Those twins are awesome !!!   They look like they
are a lot of fun...  Sweet impish looks on their faces..
Adorable!

Mary Ann

Thanks for the kind words about the twins.  Ellie probably will never catch up with Jo so it will be hard to convince people they are twins.  I love their smiles and Sandy, I agree, they have impish looks on their faces.

Tom and his lady friend are heading north toward Frankfort (on Lake Michigan), hoping to see some color.  I thought it should be a nice day, crisp but sunny, but radar shows some rain in the area.  Nothing serious, but wet anyway.

I'm watching some golf but I'm not sure where it is, possibly Andulusia (in Spain?).  I recognize some of the names, but the men from the US are still in Koala Lumpur.  It may be Sunday there now but the TV starts at 9:30 to 10 pm tonight; they're about 12 or 13 hours ahead of us.

Mary Ann

Larry, tis a Dell PC.  I have never liked laptops.  In fact I gave the one that I had as a spare to Candy this last trip.  I never used it and hers is in storage.   I was kind of scared to go to Win 10 but so far am finding my way.  Of course I haven't tried downloading any books on it yet either. LOL

angelface555

Good morning from a cool, four degrees Interior. Farrah is doing her usual running about with those hoarse growls of hers, cleaning out all the mini invisible, infiltrating demons, nasty buggers! I'm safe during that operation, on the couch with my first coffee at 9:45 AM.

MaryAnn, Your great nieces are adorable! What a cute photo with those impish expressions!

Larry, they know about cats' sight the same way they know about canines and about humans. By study, observation, and dissection. I'm sure a veterinarian has almost as much or more study than a human doctor.

They have seen it in feral colonies, mother and young and in barn cat colonies, that an older or more experienced cat will provide food for the lesser members of the homegroup. It is a compliment that the cat is attempting to contribute in the way he knows how. That is why an understandable fuss on our part sends an entirely different message to the cat.

Joan, it is almost always nice to have a new computer! I'm saving up for one containing a lot of memory as I do a lot of graphics and photography that both my laptop and my desktop have too little memory for. I end up with everything in my Dropbox App or on externals.

Enjoy yours!

Mary Ann

Thanks, Patricia, on your comment about the girls.  I wish they lived within walking distance so I could see them more often.  I understand they are good little girls, seldom crying.  I have heard them cry, however, and I think I had temporary hearing loss in one ear because I was holding Jo while Ellie was being readied for bed before James and Alicia left for home.  She was loud and consistent.

It is a lovely day here and I'm going to go get the mail in a few minutes.  We are around 70 degrees.  Kendrick will appreciate my letting him out on the porch stoop.  He's been good of late, coming right in when I get back.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Cool and bright here this morning.  I think most of the fires are now under control, and will soon be out.  It's always a surprise to me, as to how long they continue to burn, long after they have done their damage.

Nothing on tap here today, so I plan to take it easy and try to catch up on my reading, while AJ watches the college football games.

joan - I've never liked laptops either.  Our son gave us an almost new laptop, when thy upgraded, but both of us prefer our desktops.  I am more comfortable, sitting up in my desk chair, and looking straight forward at the monitor.  If I sit with a computer on my lap, I get uncomfortable almost immediately. It bothers my neck and eyes to look down, and also causes me to slump and start the back pain.

wjoan

Mrilyne, a few years back I took my PC into the Geeks shop so had to use my laptop.  Son got it set up on my desk and added my mouse so it was ok for me.  Was very glad when my PC came back home tho.

angelface555

Marilyne, my laptop, and my desktop sit on tables and are linked together. I am able to use the 22" monitor for both and I have turned off the touchpad in favor of a mouse.

My eyes are bad as the one on the right is focused higher than the other due to a lower fixed pupil position, the muscles not working well behind the eyes so it is important to focus right with the laptop and not look down.

The one I am saving for will be a desktop simply as they can have more memory and a second hard drive will be placed in it.

Mary Ann

I haven't had a desktop since my ME Gateway.  I liked the desktop OK, but it wasn't as portable as a laptop.  I originally bought a laptop to take on one of my trips to Florida so I would not have to fight Norm for use of his desktop which he took with him when he was driving to Florida.  After he began to fly down, he bought a laptop and that was all he had after that.  My furniture setup is such that a desktop would not work and I find I prefer the laptop anyway.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is another mirror morning to what we have been having.  We should get into the low 80's this afternoon.  I plan on going to Sunday School and Church this morning but am doubtful that Pat will go as the chairs and pew are painful for her with her back.  I will pick up some lunch for us and have no other plans for today.  Yesterday for dinner Pat made a Greek Salad to go with our pot roast TV dinner, which was actually pretty good for a TV dinner.

Mary Ann, I would think the time changes playing all over the world would give the golfers difficulty.  I did read an article about the wind conditions for the tourney being played in South Korea.

Joan, Pat and I both have lap tables on which our laptop sit.  I agree there are a few drawbacks in seeing the keyboard but for me they are well worth putting up with.  I haven't had any trouble with Windows 10 other than it takes hours sometimes to get a big update loaded.  Hope you will have no trouble downloading your books to the new computer but shouldn't think you would since that is an app as long as it is compatible with Windows 10.

Patricia, you all aren't wasting any time in getting to some very cold temperatures.  I just looked at your weather indicator at the bottom of your posting and it says it is now 12 degrees which sure sound better than the 4 degrees you mentioned for yesterday. I also don't like to use the touch pad on the laptop and just use a cordless mouse.

Marilyne, good news concerning most of the fires out your way being pretty much under control.  I still haven't heard whether my two first cousins that live in Napa Valley and evacuated lost their homes or not. I tried to reach their brother in the Oakland area yesterday without success.  I usually spend all morning in my office using my desktop and then after resting in the afternoon settle into my easy chair and use the laptop for the rest of the day.
