Hi Everyone. Today we will only be in the low 60's and partly cloudy.  However, the morning is starting off nice and clear.  I think Pat is feeling up to going to Sunday School and Church with me this morning.  This is the second day she hasn't needed to use her walker in the morning.  I believe the shots are definitely helping.  We will probably go out to eat after Church, hopefully with a couple of friends from Sunday School.  That will be out activities for the day.  Yesterday I did attend my meeting and then came home and rested for a couple of hours.  About 3:30 we went to Ruby Tuesday's and had a good meal.

Mary Ann, yes on not having to treat my toes after about 6 weeks is a big relief and they are no longer sore.  Pat and I have lived in several apartments right after we were married and again when we were waiting for our home to be built when we moved to Maryland.  However, we didn't have any pets in the apartments.  I like to do the jigsaw puzzles on the computer around 150 pieces as it is more of a challenge.

Marilyne, there are no such laws on cat declawing where we have lived, at least that I have ever heard of.  The cat we had brought back from the vet a severe infestation of flees that we had a very hard time getting rid of so guess he had his revenge.  :)  I had never heard of scratcher pads for cats when we had ours. I guess we didn't think about the declawing as being cruel as it was common at the time we had it done.

Patricia, I realize it is dry and not wet temps up your way but you had made some comments about the high humidity and I just wondered if that caused the snow to be a bit wetter. Doing other touring while on a long trip other than sailing makes a lot of sense and I hope your friends have a wonderful time.  Nice that Shelby and Lizzie will not be separated with the adoption and it sounds like you may be able to keep track of them on Facebook.  That is a long list of countries that have outlawed declawing.  I guess in the USA it would be something left up to each State to deal with.  I did a little research but didn't find a list of States where it is illegal.  However, I did find an interesting article by a Vet on the subject:  http://www.declawing.org/  Since we will never have another pet this is not an issue I will ever have to deal with personally again.

Good almost noon hour.  Started out with rain, now it is sunny was very windy, the TV says the wind gust at 50.  Power was off about 15 min.

Larry so glad that Pat is feeling better.  for a couple of years I got those shots every few months and they lasted about a month.  Last time he the doctor gave me 4 shots across my back.  Lasted a couple of months. I now just live with the back, walking and breathing.

Taffy, was declawed when I got her over 8 years ago.  The cat I had before, I had to get ride of, as he clawed everything in sight.  All my doors are a mess, curtains, furniture.  the finally time when my husband walked by him in bare feet and he scratched him so bad, his feet took a long time to stop bleeding, as he was on a blood thinner. Then we worried about infection.

Bubble, Dot and I split a pumpkin cream pie and a tuna melt today and I took pictures of both foods.  When I got home, my camera was not in my purse.  Tom took me back to the restaurant where I found the camera on the floor under the table and seat where we had eaten.  It was in an out-of-the-way place and not easily seen and the booth was empty when we got there.  My coat was on the floor when we left and I know that took the camera with it.  What luck.

Anyway, two pictures are on their way to you.

Good morning from the Interior. You're right Larry. To have it snow, there must be both humidity and warmer temperatures. I have just heard folks all my life talk about how "inhumanly" cold it is here that I am sensitive to the subject. More than one person has believed we must all live underground somehow and my first mother-in-law begged us to bring her grandchild "Where it was safe!"

We are lucky not having fleas in the state, but I guess I should "never say never." So many bugs don't exist here such as Gypsy Moths or snakes, although they gave seen garter snakes in Juneau and coyote have been observed in Denali which is less than one hundred miles from here.

I do know that Dora plans several trips while they tour the different castles and I believe many of the castles are on scenic hills so this will be a trip of a lifetime for her. Alan says he's just coming along to carry luggage and packages.

Gloria, we have strong east winds in the various summits and strong south winds in the valley by Delta Junction. However Fairbanks is calm, not even the Carillion has been heard, at least by me. I hope you don't lose power again!

MaryAnn, you were lucky that you still had your camera! Your lunch's pie sounded so good!

angelface555

Gloria I just heard about the 50mph winds taking down scaffolding in NYC and injuring three. I hope you're staying in today. We are having those winds in the higher summits today but since they only able to drive on the lower summits, the only risk is blowing snow and visibility. There is a huge difference, population wise between your state, area, and mine!

I probably won't check the Facebook page for Lizzie and Shelby. Without the daily live feed, it won't be compelling and with the two-year-old females already in the home, both Mama and kitten will have someone else to play with. I had never heard of a circumstance where a kitten was born four days after the initial litter and the circumstances plus her intelligence and early abilities created the draw.

Hi Everyone. We finally had a freezing temperature last night.  When I looked at the weather app this morning it said it was 28 degrees.  We are to get up to about 60 degrees this afternoon. Nothing on the schedule for today so will just take things slow and easy.  After Church yesterday we decided to come home and have lunch here rather than eating out.  I think Pat was pretty warn out from Sunday School and Church.  She really gave me a scare as we will going up the hallway from Sunday School yesterday her leg gave way and she started to fall.  She was able to prevent the fall by placing her hand on the wall and I grabbed her other arm.  I am so thankful that she didn't fall but she said she has had the same thing happen here in the house but so far has been able to grab on to something and steady herself.

deAngel, Pat knows there is no guarantee as to how long the shots will help her but she is enjoying a lessening of the pain.  She still has the pain associated with the arthritis in her back but is not having the spasm that were so painful.

Mary Ann, certainly glad Tom was able to find your camera.

Patricia, I remember when we got to Anchorage in the late 1960's how surprised I was at how everyone paid no attention to the weather in terms of slowing down activities.  There were as many cultural things to do there, if not more, than the cities where I had lived before.  We really liked living there but it was just too far away from our families and we wanted our children to have the opportunity to know their grandparents.  Dora must have spent a lot of time planning their trip and the various points to visit.  It sounds like Alan has a good attitude about it all and knows Dora will be doing some shopping. I did look at the Udemy Online Courses. I wonder how they were able to get so many classes available to offer.  I am glad you are enjoying taking them.

Bubble, thanks for posting those pictures of the meal Mary Ann and Dot shared.  As I looked at the picture of the pie I wondered who got the bigger piece as the pieces didn't seem to be of equal size.  :)

Patricia, I read this today in a newsletter I get each day and thought you and others might enjoy it:

Worth It
(By Michael Newnham)

Chester just jumped into my lap...and slid off the other side of the chair onto the floor.

He did extend his claws into my leg to slow his descent, however.

Chester does not know how to be a lap cat.

Chester doesn't know much about a lot of things and knows too much about some other things.

He knows that life is hard and a cat does what a cat must do to survive.

A cat may have to kill, both prey and competitors for prey.

A cat must never trust, because trust leads to confinement or abuse.

Love is a lie that is used to snare him, the worst trap of them all.

He knows these things because that's what life (and humans) taught him before I coaxed him out of my bushes.

He doesn't know how to purr, but he tries sometimes.

Chester has never kneaded and weaved as most cats do to comfort themselves...he knows little about comfort at all.

He is a glutton...food was scarce once and he eats his food, Missy's food, my food (if he can reach it) and then screams for more food when he's done.

He screams a lot.

He's attacked Miss Kitty, for no reason except proximity.

He knows that life has changed...but he can't fully shake his past.

He tries.

He likes being petted a bit...just a bit.

Being comfortable makes him nervous.

He'll lay at my feet like a dog and walk right next to me as a dog would also.

If he thinks he can do so without Miss Kitty noticing, he'll sleep right next to me...with the queen of the house snoozing on my other side.

He wants to love and be loved, but his fears and his scars keep him from fully having what he desires.

For another cat owner, he wouldn't be worth the trouble.

He's so much like me, I couldn't possibly give him away.

Every once in a while I have to be reminded that God feels the same way about me that I do about Chet.

God loves me and is sometimes the only one who thinks I'm worth the trouble.

He will keep me...even if I never get better.

He feels the same way about you.

He gave me Chester to remind me...and you.

You're worth it...even if it seems like He's the only one who sees it.

He will never leave or forsake you.

Don't even think about petting me...

Larry, there is nothing like a wall to help when you lose your balance.  Or a sturdy piece of furniture.  I use them often.  When going after the mail, I try to pace myself but often find that I am walking too fast.  That comes from years of walking with taller people.  I stop at the side of the road, look both ways, then cross the street and do the same coming back home.  I do try to watch more carefully when after the mail because I have no walls to lean on.  So far, so good!

As for the camera, at first Tom thought it was not on the floor, but I spotted it under the seat where Dot had sat and it was barely visible, being in the shadow.  Tom took over for me in trying to maneuver almost blindly because he was sitting on the bench.  With my verbal help and that of two women sitting across the aisle, Tom was able to slide the camera to the aisle where I could pick it up.  It is none the worse for wear and in the future I will make sure it is zipped up in the compartment in my purse.  If I had lost the camera, we would not have been able to take the family picture I want to take Thursday.

Bubble, thank you for posting those pictures.  Dot cut the pie without thinking of my taking a picture so that is why there are two pieces of Pumpkin Cream Pie.  We both felt this pie was not as good as those we had previously, but they won’t be around much longer.  The other picture, of course, is the Tuna Melt.  We both like the Tuna Melt very much.  I think I have mentioned when we would go there with Norm, he’d have eggs, potatoes, meat and toast; Dot would have oatmeal and I’d have an entire Tuna Melt (Dot and I split it now).  Larry, unfortunately, I got the larger piece of pie.  Dot cuts it and insists that she wants a smaller piece.  I called her on it a couple of weeks ago and said I resented her not cutting the pie in equal pieces, so she did that one day, but she’s back to her old ways and there is little I can do about it but remind her every week.

Larry, I like the piece about Chester.  I don’t think Kendrick fits into the category, although Farrah might be close.  However, Kendrick is not a lap cat; I can’t coax him on my lap, but when I’m on the davenport, he does know if he gets on his cushion, I’ll scratch him.

Reading some on Ancestery.com, I came across the name of a deceased cousin’s adopted daughter.  I think I saw her only a couple of times, maybe only once, when she was less than three years old.  Later I heard she had difficulties and was not in contact with the family.  It was as often happened that my cousin and her husband adopted two children, then had two of their own.  I sent this woman a message and she answered me yesterday.  I’m glad to hear that she is in contact with some of her family, but she’s 60 now, so she has let the past go.  I am going to respond to her and fill her in on some of her family.  When you hit on something like this, genealogy can be a lot of fun.

It's very windy at Grand Haven with the water temp at 46 degrees and the air at 44 degrees.  I didn't see any people around, but earlier I did see a surfer flying a kite.  Not for me!

Marilyne

Mary Ann, I wish I had that tuna melt and cream pie right now - even though it's only 8:00 AM, here in California!  They look delicious! :)

Today starts Thanksgiving week, and I have a lot to do.  Our older daughter and granddaughter will arrive this afternoon, and then it is non stop talk, for the next four days! She'll have to do most of the talking, however,  as my vocal cords will quickly become exhausted.   AJ is going to Costco this morning to get a ready-to-eat casserole for tonight's dinner, plus a few essentials like coffee, and some paper products.  As I mentioned before, I ordered a Thanksgiving turkey dinner from Whole Foods, which will be picked up on Thursday morning.

I hope you're all looking forward to this week - the beginning of the 2017 holiday season!  Then only a short time until Christmas.

Good morning from the Interior where we are enjoying minus twenty-two. Usually, when it warms up after a cold spell, the highs and lows are rarely more than three to seven degrees apart.

Thanks for that reading Larry. Yes, that does fit Farrah in many ways. She has never lost that hyper-awareness even after sixteen months of relative comfort. She purrs a little now when being rubbed down but it is more of a feel than a sound. She is to my mind, a very resilient cat to have lasted five years. The island in the midst of a glacial, muddy river full of rapids that she was found on is only accessible by boat or plane, so she is lucky to be alive.

MaryAnn, both pie, and sandwich look very good and thank you Bubble for posting them. I do like cream pies probably a lot more than I should! The Tuna melt was not at all like I had pictured it as I thought of it as similar to one covered in melted cheese.

Marilyne, it sounds like you have your holiday plans in hand. The holidays are upon us much to my surprise. Somehow I thought we had more time. I will be helping to pick up and deliver Thanksgiving boxes on Wednesday to folks here and then on Thursday, I will stay home and enjoy a day of rest. There are, of course, Thanksgiving cards and graphics in the card section if anyone would like to join us in posting a greeting.

Mary Ann

Patricia, my descriptive abilities are almost nil so I am not surprised you had other ideas about the Tuna Melt.  I sent a recipe to Marilyne that sounded as close to what we get as possible, but the picture that was with the recipe was not quite like what we get.  Our filling is more mayo than the recipe, but Marilyn. said she made it and it tasted good.

A little while ago Kendrick was lying on my bed and it is hard sometimes to get him to understand that my reach is limited.  I tried to scratch his chest and he started to grab my hand with the paws (with claws).  I pulled away and the expression on his face was almost that of a hurt feeling.  Later, I was able to pet his head and we got along OK.  I keep telling him I do not do claws and I don't do rear ends!

Maybe I should put on some shoes and go after the mail.

Patricia, Kendrick doesn't really give me a rear end, but when he's trying to settle down by me, I find his tail in my face.  He has a lovely tail, but I'd rather he keep it to himself!

I've just made contact with the adopted daughter of a cousin, who has a start on Ancestry and has asked me to be editor of her page.  I looked and she has nothing down.  I found her birth record and it gives my cousin and her husband as the parents.  I'm sure at 60+ years she knows she adopted, but I'm not about to bring it up and I want her to put in whatever she wants.  But it is up to her to make the first move.

Lake Michigan is very busy as far as wind and whitecaps are concerned.  I saw a kite with a surfer who I thought quit surfing, but then I saw another kite which I think is a different color.  It took quite a while before he showed up along the shore, then went out into the water.  Not for me.  Now I see three surfers with kites.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I've recently joined Ancestry, and did my DNA, and I now have a list of about 1,000 people who are related to me! :o  The whole DNA thing is fascinating! What exactly would you do it you were editor of her page?  It would be interesting for her, being as she was adopted, to find out about her relatives through her DNA sample. That would be unusual if she doesn't know she was adopted?

Mary Ann

Marilyn, being an editor allows me to make corrections or add information to her tree.  She knows the names of her birth parents and I think she said she knew them.

I have no idea how many distant cousins I have on Ancestry, but I do know I have 317 4th cousins or closer.  Fourth cousins would be descended from my 3rd great-grandparents and that's as far back as I care to go.  So many of those people do not have any information so I can't trace them, but I have recognized the names of about 20-25 and I have contacted some of them.  My mother and aunts were double cousins to a pair of sisters.  The grandsons of one of the sisters are in my DNA list, one is shown as a 2nd cousin, the other as a 3rd cousin - they're brothers.

I upgraded Windows 10 recently and the upgrade goofed up my bookmarks.  Tom told me before he headed for bed that he would see what he can do for me tomorrow.  Tom is a Mac man and he doesn't care about learning about PCs but he will for me!

Mary Ann

MarsGal

I'm happy to see you are home Jeanne Lee. Just in time for Thanksgiving, too.

Okay, I forgot who mentioned the motion toy. I got one day before yesterday and the cats (yes, all three) love it. If I attempt to change speed or turn it off, Shan attacks my hand. "No touching, Mom. This is mine!" This morning Lucy got into the act. I was very surprised, but if it keeps her a little active, it is great. I swear she sleeps 20 out of 24 hours even though she is only seven.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. We have an overcast but warmer morning with a low percentage of having some rain today.  This is another day with nothing on the calendar.  I may make a trip over to Costco to look at the Chromebook computers.  I have pretty well decided that I will go that route again but upgrade.  This will be Pat's Christmas present to me and I might just get it a little early.  I stayed home all day yesterday and it was just a quiet day.  I almost finished another audiobook, which I will finish up today and select another.  I just spent an hour or more working on Pat's computer.

Mary Ann, at least a wall won't move when you steady yourself with it.  It seems I am walking slower by the day unless I consciously think about it and increase my strides.  I still have good balance.  Maybe Dot really does prefer the smaller piece of pie.  It is good when we can let things in the past go and resume family relationships.

Marilyne, I hope you have a wonderful time with your daughter and granddaughter.  Getting your Thanksgiving dinner already prepared is a good idea.  Pat tried to plan so there is as little preparation as is possible.  Our granddaughter is to make the pies, including the first pecan pie she has ever made.  Pat gave her a number of helpful hints on how to determine whether it is done but not overcooking it.  We have a 5 pound turkey breast to bake that says sit will take 4 or 5 hours and the rest of the meal shouldn't be too difficult to prepare.  I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and then on to Christmas.

Patricia, I would never enjoy minus twenty-two.  You are a hardy soul.  It is interesting how the holidays creep up on us so quickly.

Jeanne, like Mary Ann I also posted to you in another folder but sure nice to see you post here as well.

Sandy, you have been pretty quiet here.  Are you doing OK? Have you had any snow yet?

deAngel, we seem to have enough furniture, walls and cabinets in our rooms that there is usually something to grab on to.

Mary Ann, I have had the same experience with bookmarks and the Windows 10 upgrades.  In fact that was what I was working on for Pat this morning.

MarsGal, I wonder if Lucy is not awake more at night than you may realize.  Glad your cats like their new toy.

Good morning from a cold, dawn breaking Interior.

MarsGal, I found this and wondered if you had purchased it? Farrah also practically insists on it always on the go!   :smitten:    "Thanks for the toy review, Angel. I was thinking of getting the tier with the balls, but will rethink it now. I think Shan would really go for the mouse under the cover toy. I had forgotten about that one."

MaryAnn, my wish for DNA testing is still there but on the back burner for now. I just seem to lurch from list to list any more without ever getting anything accomplished.

Patricia, I don't know if I mentioned this before - and I don't want to go back too far to look - but I'm going to have Tom take the DNA test.  I am sure his brothers did not send for the test and I don't know about his uncles.  Tom had said he'd take it if I wanted him to and it dawned on me that we didn't have anyone close to his mother, so Tom is it.  It isn't to prove anything and we know a lot of her relatives (she was descended from Thomas Hooker, so Tom also is descended from him), but Tom's DNA will tie in with his kids' DNAs.  To me, it is more of a fun thing.

Sandy, it is kind of a dreary day here too, although I think I have seen the sun out.  I just woke up from a nap and I slept hard so I'm not really awake yet.

Tom has just left to do some driving.  I feel so sorry for him, but his regular job isn't paying much and we're coming to a season where it will pay less, so he drives to put some money in the bank.  Driving hasn't been too profitable, but he has made some money he would not have made otherwise.

Kendrick got at the blowing toilet paper while I was napping.  He didn't create a lot of scraps, but he sure rolled a lot off the roll.

Lake Michigan is quite busy with lots of whitecaps.  I saw something along the shore that looked like someone's surfing or kite flying equipment, but I didn't see any surfers or kites.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, It seems to me that most men are not particularly interested in their ancestors, their DNA, doing research, etc.  I had to persuade AJ to send for his DNA kit, and then send it back!  He wasn't at all interested, but I think I convinced him by telling him that when he and I have passed away, it will be important to future generations.  When the results came back, he did look to see any familiar names amongst his "matches", but I don't think he has looked since.  Also, I'm trying to persuade our son to send for the kit, but he's resistant.  "What would I want to do that for?", was his response. ::)

On the other hand, both daughters have joined Ancestry, and are extremely interested.  Also two granddaughters.  I think it's fascinating, and I've been having a lot of fun looking at my matches, and at the different trees that are available.  If I have nothing to do online, I can always go to Ancestry and look up a few distant cousins! :)

Mary Ann

Marilyn, Ancestry has the kits priced at $79 now, possibly until the end of the year.  Why don't you buy a kit and let your son spit, then you can send it in; it's postage paid.  Tom would not want to spend the money for the kit because he is short of money (that's why he drives for Uber) so I bought two kits at that price.  Tom will take care of filling the vial and he or I will put it in the mail.  They certainly do make it easy to get your DNA.  Annie and James both have gotten their DNAs and I don't know who will get the extra kit - maybe one of the Indianapolis cousins.

Hi Everyone. I got up early and started working on Pat's computer to restore some bookmarks on her Chrome Browser. It was not a big job. Today I have work to do on her computer that I have been using that I will put back up in her sewing room. Jennifer will be coming to share supper with us tonight and then she and Pat plan on playing some Farkle.  Scott has to work tonight.

Yesterday I did go to Costco and came home with a new Acer Chromebook that has a 14 inch HD screen.  They had them on sale for $90 off the regular price. It also came with a new wireless mouse.  This one has access to the full Android Play Store, which is literally millions of applications for Android tablets and phones.  I had a bit of a time getting that feature set up but I finally found all the steps to take.  The first Chromebook computer I had didn't have this feature and had only a few apps available to run on it.  It also came with a hundred gigabytes of online cloud storage for two years, which is a big plus. So Pat has her Christmas shopping done for me and these computers don't break the bank.

Hal, thanks for the link.  I checked it out.  Fortunately I don't suffer from a-fib.  However, it is amazing what is now available for us to monitor our own health.  I wasn't aware of this device.  I wonder how long it will be before doctor's offices start using this instead of the device they now use.

Patricia, I used to make lists of things to do all the time but haven't done so recently.  I do use my calendar on my desk to put down appointments or important things.  I have no interest in having a DNA test.

Sandy, I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving "Turkey Day" tomorrow at Kelly's.  Interesting that you will be having Lobster.  Will you also be having some turkey or is it strictly lobster.  Glad to read you are doing well.

Mary Ann, it is great that the DNA testing is available for those interested in tracing their background. Maybe Tom's driving job will really pick up when the holiday parties start and people need rides if they have been drinking.

Marilyne, I guess AJ and I think alike on the DNA.  If you and your husband have both done the DNA test what would your son gain from doing his own?  I must be missing something here.

MarGal, tell Shan thanks for his typed message.  :) Was this his Thanksgiving greeting to all of us?
