Marilyne, it almost sounds as if California is being punished by Mother Nature after fires and now flu! I'm surprised one of those doomsday preachers haven't picked up on it for one of their sermons.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, Tom talked to James this morning and he had not arrived in San Diego yet, but would later today.  He will stay with the family overnight, then they will take him to Palm Springs where Tom has friends who will take him to an airport to fly to Chicago and Tom will drive to Chicago Wednesday to pick him up.  James has never been in that part of the country as an adult when he can really appreciate the scenery.  I have been in the area a few times but my dad and I were there before Interstates  Of course travel took longer then, but you were closer to the scenic parts of the country.  I didn't recognize any of James' pictures because of that.  They have done a good job with the roads, having them in some of the scenic areas, but a lot has changed in 50-60 years as far as roads are concerned.  I'd love to go out West again, but all I could do would be gawk; I would not be able to walk to any of the sites.

The cat and I both took naps this afternoon. Kendrick is back napping because I can't play with him now.  Poor kitty.

Believe it or not, we are at 36 degrees and only a few days ago we were in the teens.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - It's been raining here all day, and supposed to move down to Southern Cal, tomorrow.  I hope it doesn't get as far south as Palm Springs.  I think James will like Palm Springs this time of year.  Winter is the tourist season there, and the weather is usually in the 70's and 80's.  It's very scenic, with all the palm trees, and view of mountains.  I would love to spend the winter there, but I don't think it's ever going to happen, at this late date.

Patricia - Fires, flu, and now maybe floods are on the way? We also had an earthquake last week. So far, no snow . . . but it wouldn't surprise me. ::)

Mary Ann

Marilyn, James may have been in Palm Springs, but not recently.  Tom has a friend who owns a resort in Palm Springs and I think Tom and his family may have been out there when James was young.  I have to laugh in a way, but Tom's friends are mostly rich and he is not!  His friendships with rich people have influenced his thinking.  Tom's family also is not rich (ours and his mother's).  Tom is getting more "down to earth" in his thinking as he gets older.  James is not one who lives 'high on the hog"; he will not be rich, but if he holds his nose to the grindstone, he will get along OK.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Larry - We have seriously considered going with the Kaiser Senior Advantage. Some of our friends have that plan, and are very happy with it.  Also, our daughter has had the regular Kaiser plan for many years, and would like to keep it going on into the future.  She likes all of her doctors there, and has no problem getting in to see her primary doc, on very short notice.  We will probably keep our Humana, because they're affiliated with Stanford Health Care, and AJ has an oncologist there that he sees every three months.

You mentioned the Alabama/Georgia game.  We recorded it earlier, and AJ is watching it right now, and Georgia is ahead 13 to 0.  I hope they win!

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  The cold has moved out and we expect to get into the low 60's this afternoon.  It didn't get to freezing last night.  I don't expect to go anywhere today unless Pat feels up to going out for our big meal.  She may not want to do that since we start our Wednesday night dinner tomorrow night at the Church.  Last night I watched Georgia University get beat by Alabama University in the college football championship game.  It was a very entertaining game and went into overtime before Alabama won.  It kept me awake until after midnight, which I something I try to avoid but this was a special event.

Mary Ann, the one time Pat went to Phoenix with me to visit my folks we all made a trip to San Diego and it is really a beautiful city with great weather.  We did visit the zoo.  That was a nice trip for James and nice of him to be willing to make that long drive with the dog.  Neither Pat nor I have ever needed to see a periodontist.

Patricia, that word of the day is a mouthful.  I think I will just stay with old age.  I don't know whether the Barometric pressure is a factor for Pat but it sure was for Stacey and our daughter-in-law.  I think Stacey had a time getting the Social Security Administration to acknowledge her papers had been submitted for disability.  I think she had to furnish them two or three time and then it took forever and a hearing before a judge to complete the action.  When the judge looked at the paperwork he immediately approved her claim and commented it should never been necessary to go to a hearing.

Joan, I know those pain shots work for some and not others as several have indicated in the postings here.  They have helped Pat but she is wondering if the help is about over.

Marilyne, I haven't seen any ads for Mr. Coffee for a long time.  Are they still available.  We have really liked the Keurig coffee maker that prepares a cup at a time.  Pat has been using regular ground coffee but just ordered some more pods which are flavored for some variety.  She has a special insert that works like the pods when she uses regular coffee.  Glad your coffee pot didn't catch fire.  The flu is also bad in our State and many others.

Marilyne, we sure hated to have to give up Kaiser health insurance but had no choice when we moved.  We were with them for more than 30 years.  We were always able to get in and see a doctor when needed.  They have wonderful up-to-date facilities and if you don't care for a paraticular primary care doctor you can easily go to another one.  They also use many other doctors on contract to them for specialties but are getting more of the specialties inhouse.  We did not use the Senior Advantage plan as I am a retired Federal employee so just had the Federal plan with them.  As I noted above Georgia did not win after looking like they were the superior team, at least for the first half.  The Alabama put in a freshman quarterbook that played very little over the season and he took over and lead them to victory.

There is a new topic "Don't know where to start" or words to that effect.  If you haven't been there, go to the topic.  Jeanne Lee's son has posted about Jeanne Lee and her health, which is not good.  He expects she will not be with us much longer.

Joy

Mary Ann,  earlier. when I first read the message from Jeanne Lee's son,  it also brought tears to my eyes.  And, I  had been feeling a little depressed today, so after reading his message,  I had a nice little cry.  That had to be a very difficult message for him to write.  Especially, the way he first started off , not knowing how to first address the subject and really not knowing who he was writing the message to.  I really admire him for his strength at a very difficult time.  He certainly is a very special son.

Mary Ann

Joy, Ken Corson did a good job in telling us of Jeanne Lee's condition and prognosis.  I know it was a difficult message to write.  I go back and read it when I get back online.

Where do I find "the topic"?

Mary Ann

Joan, I have a list of topics come up when I sign in and I saw it there.

Go to Forum, click on that and a list of all forums/folders comes up.  At the very bottom is a list of recent folders and half-way down is "Well, I don't know where to start" or something like that.  That is the folder you want.

Thanks Patricia for the link.

Jeanne Lee was so helpful and kind, in my eyes she was an integral part of S@N, a friendly presence for all.
Bye Jeanne, you will be missed, but will remain as a dear memory for all.

Hi Everyone.  It is going to be a truly beautiful day as nice an sunny and going to get up to around 70 degrees.  This is going to be a very busy morning as Pat has an appointment at the pain clinic.  Then we will go to the Credit Union to have the money wired to pay off our house mortgage--no more house payments!  Then if Pat feels up to it we will go to Great Clips so she can get a haircut.  Wednesday is senior day and you save $2 over the regular cost.  While she is there I will go across the street and get some cash from the ATM and make a quick stop at Walmart for a couple of items.  This evening, as I said yesterday, we will go to the Church for the Wednesday night dinner.  After Pat's doctor's appointment yesterday we decided to stop at the Pizza Hut for the Tuesday evening buffet and more specifically just to say hi to our son.  He was busy so we had little time together but got a nice hug as we left.  He and Jennifer will be coming out to the house after dinner.

I know we are all saddened by the news regarding Jeanne Lee.

Marilyne

Thinking about Jeanne Lee, this morning, and also about Hal's son in law.  He is the third person I have heard about in the past few months who developed sepsis, from a bacterial infection.  A very serious situation.

Looks like my granddaughter Claire, now has the flu?  I hope my daughter takes her to a doctor or ER today for a diagnosis, and a prescription for Tamiflu. The news last night and the paper this morning is saying that ER's and hospital beds are filled with people of all ages, with this flu.  It would be good to stay away from crowded places, but that's impossible here in California.  Some stores are worse than others, like Costco, so we will try to avoid going there . . . but we can't just stay home.  Unfortunately, I am not one who has home cooked food and meals stored away in a freezer.  I don't even have a freezer! ::)   So, one or both of us go to a grocery store just about every day.  I'm going to get ready and go this morning, before the stores get really crowded, and will try to buy enough for at least two days. :-\

FlaJean

Marilyne, so far I haven’t heard of any flu outbreak in our area.  I imagine with all the fires in CA the quality of the air has been bad, especially for people who already have respiratory problems making them more susceptible.

Thanks Mary Ann and Angel for letting us know about Ken’s post concerning Jeanne Lee.  I’ve thought a lot about her recently and wondering how she was doing.  She will surely be with us in thought and prayer.

Lindancer

Marilyn, the flu was very bad in NY, before Christmas, 56% of hospital admissions were for the flu.  Now to days paper said there is a very bad shortage of fluide  for the IV, as most of it came from factories in Puerto Rico, which some do not have electric yet, or if they do it comes and goes,  So they have been using syringes to give fluide and now they are low in syringes so Jan. is not starting out so great.

Now my cousin in her 80's fell when she got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, broke her hip. She laid there 12 hours until someone came to take her to lunch.  I feel twice as bad, as she lives around the corner from me. She also has COPD

Hope next time I can write a happy report.

Jean, there are so many people who post only in one folder so I thought it best to let people in a couple of folders know about Jeanne Lee.  Some members don't know how to find other folders and I know we all have different ways to get to our folders.  I happen to have a menu come up that includes many folders I don't read, so with that title, I had to read it.

I too feel bad about Jeanne Lee; she has been such a big help to all of us and she will be very much missed.

Hi Everyone. Our day is starting out with it being around 60 degrees and it will be cloudy all day.  Yesterday was a very nice day to be out and about.  We did accomplish all of the things I wrote about yesterday including paying off the mortgage on our home.  Neither Scott nor Jennifer made it to the dinner at Church last evening but Scott did come over around 8 and visit for a couple of hours.  Today will be my normal Thursday.  I will pick up my friend and we will go to coffee downtown.  I will then bring him home and go back to the Church for the Wisdom group.  That will be it for the day.

Pat did not get good results from the pain doctor yesterday.  Since the shots haven't held they will not give her any more.  She has an appointment with the surgeon as wants to talk to him again before making a decision about whether to try surgery as he had told her before that surgery would address only a little of her problem since the spinal stenosis is so severe.

Marilyne,   This is probably a bad time to go to a primary care doctor or ER as that is likely where the flu patients will go.  I wasn't too worried about sitting in the pain doctor's office yesterday but tried to sit off to myself as much as possible.  However, I suppose the only way to totally avoid the possibility of being exposed is to stay locked up in my house, something I am not willing to do.  Sorry to hear your granddaughter has the flu and sure hope it doesn't spread in your family.  I try to get to Costco right when it opens and before the crowds get there.

Jean, I spoke to someone at Church Sunday who said his wife was getting over the flu.  I haven't heard of it being a big problem around here either but it may be.

deAngel, it is too bad your cousin didn't have a safety alert button to call for help.  It is one of those things you pay for and hope you never need to use but if you do it is priceless.

SCFSue

Larry, I'm sorry to hear about Pat's continuing pain.  My sister has spinal stenosis and had the surgery last year, but it didn't improve much.  Perhaps Pat's doctor will have an opinion about whether the surgery and recovery period will lessen the pain enough to be helpful.  Please keep us posted.

Larry, when I signed on the computer, it said our present temperature is 58 degrees.  That is hard to believe, but that probably is due to the January thaw.

I got Kendrick's Katty toy out a few minutes ago - the one where the "mouse" goes around under a cover.  He hasn't seen it for several days.  He eyed it, then went to it and caught the "mouse" a couple of times.  Each time he caught the "mouse", it made a ratchet noise and he let loose of it quickly.  After a few minutes he tired of it so I put the toy away.  I'll wait until next week before I get it out again.

Annie was here last night and she hid some catnip in the Scratch Lounge I bought.  The lounge is such that the bottom is reversible so I had Annie reverse that part.  He had scratched on the other side so it wasn't as usable as it should be.

Tom is going to buy a roast chicken for supper tonight - sounds good.

Good afternoon from the Interior! I hope everyone is doing well, Gloria dug out of the snow, Pat doing better with her spinal stenosis or at least less pain and Marilyne stay away from those flu germs! You and California have enough to deal with!

Altho perhaps Gloria, with the flu in LI; maybe it might be better to stay snowed in awhile longer?

MaryAnn, roast chicken with some roasted veggies does sound good!

Alan and Dora got in last night. Why is it that returning planes always arrive between midnight and four in the morning? Anyway, he reports that the cats were meowing and crying and trying to climb up them when they got home. I think they were missed! The cats hid every time someone came to fill their food and water dishes and water the plants. They must have felt abandoned judging by how they greeted Alan and Dora upon return.

They are having brunch on Saturday to catch up with everyone, show videos and hand out souvenirs. So that will be fun.

Do you remember Lizzie and Shelby of Youtube foster kitten fun? The new owner has a 34-year-old large parrot, Giovanni, who is used to cats. The photo of Lizzie first meeting a bird that is almost larger than her was priceless on her owner's facebook page. Now when the parrot joins the cats, (supervised); Lizzie tries to sit next to him, but he flaps his wings and deters that idea.

Lizzie has already taught her two black six-month-old cats pals to climb the child's gate the owner used to keep the cats confined, open the door to a cabinet to get the supervised only cat toys, and somehow climb to the top of the china cabinet. She is smart and also definitely a brat. She is reported to be a whirlwind on speed!  ;D

I have so much stuff waiting for me, house, classes, and paperwork so I best get to it!

Patricia, we had mashed redskin potatoes with the chicken and they were good.  I got a kick out of the cat pictures and captions.  Kendrick has opened a cabinet door that has a magnet, but not a latch but he hasn't tried any other tricks of that sort.

It is raining here right now and our temperature is around 50+ degrees and the temperature is supposed to slide down drastically and we should have a high tomorrow of 25 degrees and it goes downhill from there.  I stay inside and let Tom get the mail and I have nowhere to go anyway.
