Here it has been raining so much this past week that the front lawn looks like a mini lake.  For sure we will have lots of mosquitoes later on.
Climate is totally bizarre this year.

Lots of snow on the Golan as well and the sky station on the Hermon was opened officially yesterday.

Mary Ann

Our beautiful, white world is not so beautiful now.  The temperature is 25 degrees F so nothing is melting but where the cars have driven, it's dirty.

I just turned on the Weather Channel and they were showing Grand Rapids in a night scene.  It wasn't indicated that it was an earlier scene so people might think we are at night already.  No sun and just snow flurries.  I wanted to see what the forecast is and it should come on soon.  We're to be in the 20s all week except for Wednesday's 43 F.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Bubble - good to see you here. :)

Patricia - The recent quake in the Gulf of AK, was from the San Andreas fault.  That is a vicious fault, and has caused much catastrophic damage over the past 100 plus years, all the way up and down the Pacific coast.  Were you living in AK when the big one hit in the 1960's?  I've read many accounts from people who witnessed that one. I think it was the longest and the strongest to ever hit anywhere in the US?  I remember when it happened, and all the news broadcasts and photos on TV and in the paper.

Mary Ann

Jim and I took a tour to Alaska in 2006 and when we were in Anchorage, I think we were on 4th street and the tour guide told us that the road dropped several feet from that earthquake.

A great nephew lives in North Hollywood CA and he told me he'd rather be in an earthquake in California than have to shovel snow in Michigan.  He said he was not near the recent fires or mudslides in southern CA.  When we were in CA in 2014 Tom drove us around the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains which to me were beautiful.  I think both areas were affected by the fires and later the mudslides.  Geoff might want to change his mind.

Marilyne, I was having my type of luck that day as I was standing on my wheeled twin bed, attempting to screw in a new bulb for the ceiling light when the quake hit. Of course, we received only minor damage and nothing like the S.E. parts of the state which are more volatile.

Fairbanks had it's own type of luck just three years later when a cataclysmic flood nearly leveled the city.

Anchorage learned a lesson as Fourth Avenue had all their major emergency areas, medical, fire station, police station, and essential city offices; etc. as it was the main street. What wasn't taken into account at the time was that the San Andreas fault line runs right down the middle of Fourth! They have forgotten another lesson as an area that received the most severe damage, dubbed Earthquake Park, has slowly been built up again because of scenic views.

Some small towns such as Valdez and some villages moved to different areas because of the amount of damage. The Valdez city dock with its buildings, people and ships disappeared when the ground split open underneath and reclosed leaving no trace of a once busy commercial area.

Carol

Earthquakes - I have been through tough ones in Seattle and a milder one in Denver.  We used to have quake drills in school.

I have not been in here for such a long time.  Hoping all of you are healthy and happy.

I am allergic to Arizona this year.  Yep, never before such sudden blinding pain and I will talk to a new to me doctor tomorrow about this - my primary care doctor is home in Colorado.  Love my bright and common sense primary care doc - she is one of the states top 10 doctors and oh so easy and friendly.  Hugs too.  Anyway, something is causing this head pain and I did not have it when we went home to Colorado for two weeks in December so it has to be an allergy (diagnosing myself).

It has been a tough winter - losing friends in here and friends we have known - the flu is raging here in Tucson so we stay out of crowds and missing a lot of activities.  It is necessary - they predict this will be going strong even through March.

Back to knitting a scarf - it isn't my favorite craft but it keeps me quiet and so nice to sit and listen to music too.

Bubble, I had to Google "Sky Station on the Hermon." I was surprised to learn of skiing in Israel I learn so much from you!

Carol, it is nice to see you here, not so nice to hear you are suffering! This hasn't been a good winter for most.

My allergies have been all chemical related but for one. There is an avenue about three miles long that leads to the ridge that the University's main campus is on. This street lined with Birch, Spruce, Alder, and Tamarack and a midway point has two separate rivers meeting, so there are several campgrounds and boat docks along the way.

It is a beautiful walk with bike paths and sidewalks on both sides of the four-lane roadway. There are many dental and medical offices along with the state's environmental agencies just up from the state's forestry department and compound.

I never had any issues until about 2013 when it suddenly began giving me a stuffed up head, headache and general flu-like symptoms that disappeared shortly after leaving the area. No one else seems to be bothered, and my allergist thinks it could be tree pollen or some bush pollen. It is just that one area in a city filled with those trees everywhere.

Mary Ann

Carol, it is so nice to hear from you.  I'm sorry you are having such bad head aches.  I hope you can find out what is causing them.

Carol and Patricia, in the '60s and earlier, I would always get a cold in March.  It was particularly bad because at work we would have a display at the Civic Auditorium and I was expected to work a shift.  I always said I had a red centerpiece with my red nose and chapped lips.  One day I took some lilacs to work and placed them in a vase in my office.  I was OK for a while, then left my office for a few minutes and when I got back, my nose stopped up and the last thing I remember smelling was the lilacs.  I put them as far away from me as I could get out on the sales floor (we sold appliances) and things eased up.

I then started a four-year stint of going to an allergist and had the 100 patch test.  I found I was allergic to dust, mold, trees, grass and ragweed - all things in the air.  For a while I went every week, then every two weeks, every three weeks and once a month.  I was given subcutaneous injections to increase my tolerance to those substances.  They worked.  But it took four years.  I seldom have the sniffles.  I'm glad I did it and if I were in my 40s again, I'd do it, but not now.

Hi Everyone.  I am late getting here on this beautiful morning.  The sun is out and it is a beautiful day. I had a really great nights sleep and didn't wake up until 8 am.  We are not going to dinner at the Church tomorrow nightt.  Scott has volunteered to prepare dinner here tomorrow evening and Jennifer is going to pick up our grocery order from Walmart a little later this morning.     We are looking forward to it. I am still looking for some energy but the cough is definitely better.

Mary Ann

Larry, it is good to hear you feel better.  And it probably is a good thing you are not going to the church dinner, what with the flu season in full bloom.  With Scott fixing supper for you, it will seem like you're eating out since food always tastes better when someone else fixes it.

Tom placed our food order for pickup and he'll get it sometime today.  I am amazed at the number of things available for pickup, practically the entire store.  I know everything is not available for pickup because a couple of storebrand items I use are not included and I am not going to ask Tom to go inside to get them.  As it is now, he designates a pickup time, goes to the store, lets them know he's there and they bring the groceries to the car.  He may have to sign something, I don't know, but I've not been along to see the process.  I only know it is very convenient for us and I like it because I don't have to remember the layout of the store.  I just look at pictures.

The sun is shining but we still are in the low 20s.

Mary Ann

Joy

Mary Ann,  Are you using  Walmart, or do you have another grocery store in your area that has the same pick-up options.   I really like the idea of not having to go to the grocery store, also.  And,  yes, it is surprising all the items, besides groceries, that are available.  I think it is the best thing since "sliced bread".   That is an old saying from way back.

I  still would like to go to the Dollar Store every once in a while because they do have nice cards, mostly, 2 for $1.  I hate to have to buy cards at Walmart as they are so much more expensive.

Larry, so glad that your cough is better and that you had a good night's sleep.   Like Mary Ann said, just having someone else fix dinner for you is almost the same as going out.  I know you will enjoy whatever he decides to fix.

We had enough snow just to cover the ground, but the roads are clear.  Still very cold, tho.  Only in the 20's right now.  However, it does look like it is getting brighter. I think the sun is supposed to make an appearance later.

Patricia, sorry to read that you haven't been feeling all that great. Sure hope you will feel better real soon.

Have a good rest of the day.

Mary Ann - North Hollywood, is a nice place to live, and I can understand why your Great Nephew likes it there.  It's probably changed since I was last there, but I have lots of happy memories staying there with my childhood best girl friend.  I spent a couple of weeks with her every summer.  Back in those days, (1940's) we played all day, and roamed around town, went to movies, swimming pools, etc.  Such freedom we had.  The same when I would stay with my cousin in Long Beach.  Get up, eat breakfast, go to the beach, swim off and on all day in the ocean or bay, or take the bus into town to see a movie.  We were trusted to follow the rules, and come home when we were told to.
*Pardon my moment of nostalgia*

Anyway, I was going to comment on your allergies, which sound a lot like mine . . . trees, grass, weeds, certain flowers, and dust!  I can manage those okay, but the hardest one for me is my allergic or adverse reactions to most prescription medications, and many OTC meds as well.

I hope I thanked you for posting the earthquake site? I'm enjoying checking it a couple of times a day, to see what's happening at the hot spots here on the Pacific Coast, as well as in other countries.

Joy, my supermarket is a chain with headquarters in Grand Rapids and they are only two miles from us.  Meijer is another chain with headquarters in Grand Rapids and they are also only a couple miles from us.  Both chains have stores all over the midwest.  I usually get my cards at my Family Fare (Spartan) supermarket just because of the convenience.  We have a Dollar Tree near us but as I don't drive, I don't get over there.  Dot gets cards there, I am sure.

Marilyn, with my allergies, when I found out what I was allergic to, you can almost know what is going on - trees start budding out here in March, grass does its thing around June, ragweed in August and I'd always have something going on in December which might have been blamed on dust and mold.  I sometimes have a touch of something, but not a full blown cold or allergic reaction.  I called them subcutaneous shots, but they really were not shots, just something injected under the skin.  When a red spot reached a certain size, the doctor upped the amount.

I look at the earthquake site daily and more if a big earthquake happens.  I also look at Grand Haven, sometimes more than once a day.

Tom has some coupons for a favorite restaurant so we are going there for lunch today.  Since I just got dressed, I am all ready except lipstick!!!

Mary Ann, from what you said earlier about how your store handles the pick-up part,  it is pretty much the same as Walmart does.  I sign up for a specific day and time, and then I get an e-mail telling me when the order is ready.  My DIL usually leaves a little early, as she usually has a few things to get, and I call her and let her know the order is ready.  She only has to go around the side of the side and knock on the door, and they bring out the order and put it in her car.

Then, the only hard part is I have to put it away.  Just hate that job. I  usually put the cold things away right away and sometimes it is the next morning before I get the rest of it put away.  I only get an order about once a month, so I usually have quite a bit.  She will stop by my place on her way to the store and pick up my fabric grocery bags, as they usually use a lot of the plastic bags, sometimes with only 1 item in it.  She will consolidate a lot of the plastic bags into the fabric bags.  Easier for her to bring them up to my apartment.   It all really works out great for me.

Mornin all.  Tis bright and sunny this morning with NO wind.  Should be about 50 degrees this afternoon.  Nice for a change.  :)

Lindancer

Good afternoon, It has stopped snowing, we got about 8 inches, Weatherman said we were to get less then and inch. ::) In Fact even the schools are closed and Town Hall, and a lot of other public buildings will not open until 11AM

Joy, As of Jan. 1st. in Suffolk county you now have to pay a nickle for each bag you use. You are now suppose to bring your own bags. Even a paper bag will cost a nickle.  that includes all stores, drug, $ store, grocery anywhere you would generally get a plastic bag. My problem is I use them for the cat litter.

Larry, so glad to see you feeling better.

MaryAnn, as long as I am able I go to the grocery store once a week, I need the walking, but I do use my pushmobile now. It has a basket, I can put things in.

MarsGal

Greetings all. It is a pretty good day here, considering. It is cold (27 now) and the wind is blowing, but hey, I'm inside nice and cosy for the moment.  I have my doubts about being able to see the super moon in the morning. It just may stay cloudy. The sun has been trying without much success to break through so far.

This morning I took Shan up to the vets for his "denutting ceremony". The snow this morning was minimal and the roads were clear. The vet called me between 10 and 11 to tell me he did fine, he was awake "already" and I can pick him up at 4, a half-hour before the normal pick up time. Shan is such a good kitty about going to the vets; I wonder how long that will last.

I have not tried the grocery services here yet. I can either put in an order for pickup at several grocery stores, in addition, I can order for delivery at Giant. They have a deal with PeaPod in this area. I don't think the other stores offer delivery yet. Then there is always Amazon. I am already ordering the cat food and litter from their Subscribe and Save offerings. I have not tried their Pantry program yet. That comes with a slight charge for delivery. I don't know what Giant charges for their delivery.

Mary Ann

We may have some stores that deliver, but I can bet they'd be in the south end, about 10-15 miles from here and they'd charge for delivery.  I know this is a "come-on" but this year I'm paying $49 for how my store handles things.  Ordinarily the cost is $99.  Even so, we order about every 10 days so the cost isn't great.  Tom's son has Amazon Prime and Tom orders using that, so I could get the cat food but I don't.  I found one thing and haven't checked recently, but I use Formula 10-0-06 to clean my face.  I get it from Ulta for $6 a bottle.  Amazon had it for $9 a bottle when I checked.

I think Tom's routine with Family Fare is he e-mails the order and picks the time.  They e-mail him when the order is ready, he goes to the store, calls them that he is there and someone brings the order out to him.  He really appreciates being able to do it this way and we both contribute to the order.  I like it because when Tom was doing the shopping, I did not remember what was in what aisle and what extra Tom would add would be in the salsa family and I don't care for salsa!  Now I can see what is in each category and order, especially snack things.

Tom and I just returned from Blue Water Grill having had lunch.  I had a Whitefish Sandwich and the side was a Pasta Salad.  Tom had a Black Bean Sandwich with the Pasta Salad.  Tom had bought some $20 coupons and we used the last one.  I gave him some money to help pay for the meal.  In fact, we usually both contribute.  I buy the food in the grocery orders, but Tom often brings my breakfast of a muffin and coffee and when he's out with friends, he often brings back a Subway or sandwich which he pays for.  I figure it evens itself out.

Now I think the cat and I will take a nap.

Good morning from the Interior! It is nice to see so many posters this morning!

The weather and I are slowly warming, and the bathroom and I are no longer such close friends. However, I feel very rundown and just want to live on the couch.

The are several stores here as well that offer delivery, even many of the ethnic groceries. But I do not drive or own a car so have never used any. That once a month trip gets me out of the house and moving so giving it up might make me more of a winter hermit that I am now.

I take the free bus, seniors over sixty-two ride free, and a taxi home. Unfortunately, the stores have grouped themselves in the East and the West sides of town, another reason to use the ethnic stores. The taxi cost home, from East or West, is another $13.90 to add to the grocery bill.

I also use Amazon for many items with Prime. In February, I am ordering a rug shampooer. To the door delivery is great! And the two problems I've had in the past, Amazon quickly and politely, fixed within a week. The only issue is not getting two-day delivery here.

MarsGal, I loved your expression," denutting ceremony," it gave me a chuckle.

Gloria, they haven't started charging for plastic yet, I also use them for litter; but bringing your own is strongly encouraged, even to the point of giving you cash back for using your bags.

Larry, rest up and regain your strength, the world will still be there when you are ready to revisit it! I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

Most stores here do not charge for bags, except I think Aldi's does.  We used to have a  Safe-A-Lot nearby and you had to bring your own bags or pay.  At the time I did not have a collection of my own bags, but I won a fabric bag on a trip to Seattle and I got a couple as premiums when I donated to PBS, also when I went to a conference with Jim, I got all of the freebies that members got and they came in fabric bags so I am well equipped with those and until we signed up for pickup, we used those.  I'll have to check to see if there is some way we can reuse them.

Tom just got home from picking up the groceries and they are all put away.

I just looked at Grand Haven.  We have been at 25 degrees all day and that grey area beyond the icy area is also ice, but very thin.  We are to have one day in the 40s and other days will be back in the 20s.

Here I am again. I'm waiting on an email from an instructor for a class I'm taking, (I'm at an impasse); so I thought I'd share a bit of irony.

When Walmart moved here, our Costco moved out and Sam's Club moved into the 161,000 square foot building. Now that Sam's Club has left, Costco is moving back into the building they left in 1996.

Revolving doors I suppose.

Here is a photo, not taken by me, that shows the area to the left of the city's outskirts. I'm posting it because it shows the first ring of the three sets of foothills surrounding our city.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Plastic bags are banned in CA, and we do have to pay for paper.  I have a couple of fabric bags that I try to remember to take, but often I forget.  I use paper grocery bags for my kitchen garbage, so I don't mind paying 10 cents when I run out.

Safeway will deliver your groceries, for a fee.  I don't know what it costs, because I've never ordered anything.  I don't know if you can order, and pick them up yourself, or not?

Patricia - you've mentioned taking a taxi once in a while.  I'm wondering if you have Uber or Lyft, in Fairbanks?  I've been told that they're cheaper than a taxi, and no tips.

MarsGal - I hope Shan is feeling well tonight, and is not uncomfortable from his surgery?  It's been many long years since I've had a cat spayed or neutered, so I can't remember how quickly they recover?

angelface555

Marilyne, they're here, but it seems they're on a par price wise with taxis. I only use the taxi when I cannot carry items on and off the bus. The drivers, to me and other seniors, take a long way around if they think you aren't paying attention, talk on cell phones and act aggrieved when you ask them or their company not to.

And if you don't have the exact amount, they will tell you they don't carry change. I always make sure I bring the correct change. They also no longer help carry any bags out of the taxi for you citing either medical issues or insurance. Some drivers carry credit card machines, but since they are independent contractors, you're trusting that your card number is safe.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I misspelled the one store - it's Save-a-Lot, not Safe.  I'm not even sure they're in business here or not.  We are accumulating too many paper bags.  When I did my own shopping I asked for two paper and the rest could be plastic because I had use for both kinds of bags.  Then I starting using the fabric bags and I'll have to see what I can do about the excess of paper.  There is always a FAST LANE to advertise the service.  If we did not have the pickup service and Tom was still doing the shopping, if he got paper bags, those bags would not have handles; the pickup bags do because someone brings them out to the car.

Patricia, I know with taxis you have to have money and you tip, but with Tom's Uber, he does not have to carry money because the passenger is charged on his/her credit card.  Tom says there are very few tips.  It isn't because it is forbidden but because the person has already paid.  Tom has had some very drunk young people, including young women, and he doesn't like that.  He can refuse to take someone if he doesn't like the destination, but has rarely done so.  From what I read, different standards apply in the various states.  I read about some very unruly Uber drivers but so far have not read about any in our area.

Time for bed.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

The first thing Shan did when he got home was to trot through the house to make sure it was all there. After spending the day sleeping and in a cage he forewent his usual evening nap, preferring to get some exercise playing or chasing Oscar. I had to intervene very little to keep him from getting too rambunctious.

While Shan was away, I did a little furniture rearranging, again, because he figured out how to get onto the shelf where I keep my ereader, tables and phone for recharging. It didn't stop him, last night, from trying to get to the shelf, almost pulling a bookend and books off the end of the lower shelf. He also discovered the wire to the outlet and light that were previously inaccessible. Now I have to rethink all this. If he follows his previous modus operandi, I will have to move my power surge protector and the tables to a much less convenient spot. Right now they are within reach of my recliner. He is not a dedicated wire chewer like Oscar, but they do seem to attract him as a play thing. The other day I caught him licking one of the other power surge protectors. Now i have to find the outlet protector plugs I know I have somewhere.

so_P_bubble

MarsGal, why not teach him not to touch wires?  Spray lemon water on his nose whenever he gets to them.  I bet he is a fast learner.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is another sunny but chilly morning here in South Carolina.  We are only to get into the mid-50's this afternoon.  I got off to a slow start this morning. I just took my last antibiotic, thank goodness, so hopefully in a day or two will start feeling a little more energetic.  There is nothing pressing on the schedule for today and plan to stay home all day.  Scott, Jennifer, and Jennifer's visiting friend, Elizabeth will be out this evening and we will be having tuna casserole as the main dish for our dinner.

Joy, I agree with you on how great the online grocery ordering is and sure we will be using it from here on out.  Since Pat is still doing the card ministry for our Sunday School class we try to buy all of the cards at the Dollar Tree store as they have some very nice ones at two for a dollar.  She is sending out around 200 cards a year for birthdays, anniversaries and get wells.  Fortunately both Scott and Jennifer as good cooks and they seem to like to cook.

Marilyne, you have some nice memories from your visits as a child.  We wouldn't think of letting our children roam freely these days.

Joan, it sounds like you are having some nice weather that is just about what we are having.

deAngel, weathermen deal with an inexact science and I guess they just give it their best shot using the sophisticated tools they have.  Other than at Aldi's we don't have to pay for grocery bags and we use a lot of the Walmart plastic bags for trash, which it seems we have a lot of.  We do have fabric bags to use at Aldi's and just keep them in the truck of the car so they are handy.

MarsGal, glad that Shan withstood his procedure yesterday.  It sounds like the vet was anxious for him to come home.

Mary Ann, Pat has found you have to keep on eye on prices on Amazon as they change a lot both up and down.

Patricia, glad to see you keep improving.  Nice that you have the free bus service.  When compared to the cost of owning a car the taxi fare isn't bad.  We have also found Amazon quick to correct any problem.  Interesting how Costco is coming back to the store space they once had and Sam's Club is leaving.

Carol

Good Day everyone!  I am so glad that I "found" this little spot once again.  I was up early to view the large reddish colored moon - we had two extra large moons in one month.  Very different.  I could not get my Kindle to take a picture - instead, I inadvertently was making a video and apparently talking to myself.  All of this in very dark back yard.  Is that insanity?

Angel:  Sounds like you nailed your allergy problem with all or at least a few of the trees on your walk.  It was 82* here yesterday - way way above normal.

Mary Ann:  Tom is a good and thoughtful person.  He is lucky to have you too.

Joy:  We pick up things like apple cider vinegar and note pads at the $1 store.  I make solar  lights for $3 each from the store too - favorite gifts to family and neighbors.  Putting things away is not easy anymore.

wJoan:  Windy days just get so annoying.

Bubble:  good idea on the sour water taste to train that cat.  It sounds like you have experienced the same.  I used to sprinkle water on any child (of mine) who started a tantrum - it stopped them in their tracks.  They still love me.

This morning, we will tote the pizza casserole and teriyaki marinated chicken I fixed yesterday for a lunch at a cousin's house about an hour's drive.  Another cousin  and veterinarian husband is visiting - everyone is from Minnesota. He is recovering from major surgery after being thrown off a horse last winter.   We will talk until our jaws ache.

Good morning Larry!  Good wishes on getting better now that you have taken all of the antibiotics.  Hi to Pat!  I am knitting a scarf - it is not my favorite thing but something to make.

Marilyne

Good morning everyone.  My computer clock says 7:50, so still early here in the West.

Carol - I also saw the Super Blue Red Moon early this morning.  I was impressed!  It was too late to see the full moon, but at 6:30, it was in partial eclipse - about half showing.  It was an unusual and beautiful reddish color.  Also, the size of the moon was larger than I can ever remember seeing it, in my long lifetime.

MarsGal - Good to see that Shan had a quick recovery from his surgery. He is so energetic and full of life!  I had forgotten how busy and active a kitten is.  Our last two cats, were older when we got them, so were settled down by then.

Larry - Glad that you're feeling better, and hope your energy picks up today.

MarsGal

Bubble, the squirt gun is only a temporary on the spot fix. It isn't long before he tries it again. If he can sneak past me to get behind the TV and computer before I see him, so much the better. I don't like to squirt water around the wiring. I tried hot sauce on the wires with Oscar, but after a few days, I think the effect wears off or he finds a spot I missed. I haven't tried the hot sause on Shan yet. It is a real pain in the you know what to rub each and every wire with the sauce, so I just try to make it too difficult for them to get to.

It was 14o when I got up this morning; it is 24o and sunny now.
