Marilyne I had never heard of Next Door so Googled and found quite a local community but was put off by their wanting me to add my email contacts and to send out invites.

Marilyne

Patricia - I've belonged to Next Door, for about three years now.  The reason I like it, is that it's strictly messages and responses about issues in your close neighborhood community. Most are concerning lost and found animals, school announcements or problems, home burglaries and break-ins, local land usage & development. There is a separate section every day offering items for sale or free.  I do remember that they ask to you "invite" neighbors to join, if you happen to know anyone who would be interested.  However, I have never been asked for email contacts, and I don't know why they would want them? I've never been contacted by anyone or asked to contact anyone?   Of course, like most message type boards online, Next Door is supported by ads and sponsors, which rarely interest me, so I scroll past those, just as I do on Facebook.

MaryTX

Patricia, I have been a member of Nextdoor for several years.  I haven't been asked for my contacts or asked to invite people either.  It's a great way to find out what's happening in your area - things that aren't on the news or in the papers.  I don't care for the ads either but just scroll on by.

Larry, I used the fob to unlock my car door but I clicked on the lock inside when I was ready to get out of the car.  I read somewhere, maybe in S&F, about someone locking their car with the fob, then hearing the car unlock, she locked it again and heard it unlock, so got in the car and drove away.  She noticed some kids sitting near where she parked and they had something that recognized the "key" to get into her car.  I think that was not the reason for my not using the fob but it was so easy to lock it on the door as I got out.  The Cavalier was the first car where I had the fob and I was so used to locking the car as I got out anyway, so I continued.

I just returned from a PT treatment.  They last only a half hour and when I'm finished I know I've had a treatment.  The young man is amazed that I've been retired nearly 32 years and he's only 28 years old now.  I use something different each time I'm there.  I feel I am making slight progress, but I am nowhere "there" yet.

I wonder if we have a Ruby Tuesday here; I know there is none near here.  We have a lot of restaurants being built near us, all chains.  At least we don't have to drive 15-20 miles for a nice restaurant now.  Our favorite is a north end sports bar - The Score - and we also like Bud and Stanley's, named after the owner's two dogs!!!

Tom is leaving now for a meeting in his lady friend's neighborhood.  A former school near her is being converted to apartments, more apartments than parking spaces, and the building is a block from her house.  She doesn't like it and wants to register her complaint.  Tom is going along for moral support since we are not affected by it.

On the way home, we took the long scenic route.  It is nice to have someone else do the driving and Tom doesn't have to be asked twice to take a drive.  I noticed one "road closed" sign where the road went along the river and probably was under water.  We do not live near the river so don't have to worry about flooding, however, prolonged rains could bring the level of our lake up as it did in 1986.  It is unusual to have flooding in February; we're about a month early - plus.

"Let’s see who you already know in the neighborhood.
It’s a great start to connecting with your community.
Email...........
We’ll import your address book to help you find your neighborhood contacts. Don’t worry, we won’t contact anyone without your consent"  For NextDoor. I opted out of joining.

This was one of the parts for joining by entering my email contacts. The next one asked for three contacts I would want to be invited to join.

Marilyne

Patricia - I guess I don't understand? Nextdoor has to have your name and address, to prove that you live in the specified neighborhood.  Also your email, because it is sent to your inbox, once a day. (With new messages off and on all day.)  Just like any other internet site, it's free and available to everyone who wants to join.  Your membership is NOT contingent upon invites or an address book. If they asked me those questions when I joined, (which I don't remember), I probably said that I didn't know anyone to invite, and didn't know email addresses of anyone.  Most likely I just ignored the questions and went ahead and signed myself up.

angelface555

Marilyne, They wanted to import all of my email contacts Why would they need that? My email address and name and address should be okay but I am not going to give out my email contacts. Their second question was to list three or more people's addresses for them to invite in my name. Both of those are not available without interrupting mine and my contacts privacy.

Marilyne

Patricia -  I'm sorry that Nextdoor isn't working out for you. It must be set up differently in AK, than it is here in CA.

Mary Ann - Sounds like your PT is progressing nicely.  That is funny, that when you retired 32 years ago, your therapist wasn't even born yet! ;D

The app is worldwide. My friend in Idaho had the same issue when I emailed her to see if she had heard about it and to get her perspective. She said that you just pass on giving them any info and make sure you go to Google so they don't have access to your Google account and you can get on that way. So, I'm thinking about it.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We are going to have a rainy and relatively cool day in the low to mid-60s.  We plan on going to the Church this evening for the Wednesday night dinner.

Yesterday it was a beautiful day outside.  We did enjoy nice petite steak dinners at Ruby Tuesdays.  I had the salad bar for one of my two sides. There salad bar contains over 50 items and is really good. We then went to Walmart to get Pat a new cell phone as hers has become unreliable.  Now I just have to figure out how to get it set up.  I thought I could just change out the SIM card from her existing phone to replace the one in the new phone but that didn't seem to work.

Late yesterday afternoon I noticed two boxes had been delivered to my neighbor, who is out of town this week.  I had told him I would keep an eye out and if anything was delivered I would bring it over and store in the garage until he gets home.  I have a refrigerator type dolly so took that over and got the boxes on it.  As I started back I noticed the name was his and the address was up the street.  So I started up that way and went two or three houses when I discovered the house numbers were getting smaller and I had gone too long.  I turned around and found the right address.  By the time I got home my heart and arm were complaining but calmed down when I had relaxed in my easy chair. Overall Pat and I had a great day yesterday and enjoyed being out.

Patricia, thanks for the additional information on where the dog was found. It is a bit unusual for Pat and I both to have good days but yesterday was one of them.

Marilyne, I think I will check out the Next Door site although I certainly wouldn't suggest people for them to contact nor want to give them access to my Address Book.  I am hopeful that our Ruby Tuesday's won't close but know that the chain is closing some of their restaurants.  I read yesterday that Macy's had a profitable quarter which is good news for them.

Mary, like you I pay no attention to the ads.

Mary Ann, I would think if someone was able to unlock your car after you had locked it that it wouldn't matter whether you used the fob or the key.  The lady was wise to just drive away.  It is nice to have choices of restaurants nearby.  We tend to eat at places close around although nothing is very far away in the Augusta area.

Mary Ann

Larry, what I got from the story about using the fob was that the boys had something that detected the combination to open the door.  If an inside lock was used, there was no signal to the boys.  It was in the locking that the signal was given.  As for me, I automatically locked the door from the inside because of having done that with previous cars where I had no fob.  I did open the car with the fob; I just did not lock it with the fob.  I got the information from the story and I did not have anything happen myself.

I had a heart monitor put in this morning; it was ordered by my cardiologist.  I think it is routine because I have not had any problems where I paid him a visit.  That does not mean nothing will be found so who knows what comes next.  I have an appointment with him in May; I see him twice a year.

After the monitor installation, Tom and I stopped at the Brandywine restaurant for lunch.  I had a coupon for a discount and I think we are kind of considered regulars even though we are only there once a month.  With the coupon we need to buy two beverages and Tom had only water which doesn't count.  The server said the coupon could not be used but did Tom want some tea to go?  He said "yes" so the coupon counted.

We are having a lovely day with the temperature somewhere in the 50s.  It is so nice to go out wearing a sweater as a wrap instead of a coat.  It is supposed to start raining tonight, then turn cold with maybe some snow.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Is the heart monitor like a little device that's attached to the skin?  How long do you have to wear it?  I saw the NP at my doctor's office on Monday, for a blood pressure check.  She was very unhappy with the reading, and made an appointment for next week for me to see the doctor.  I won't say how high it was, because it was pretty scary.  I know I have "white coat syndrome", but still . . .

Lindancer

Good afternoon, everyone another Spring like day. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop in March. We have had our famous blizzard 1888 then.  My grandmother could not get back home for 3 days in that one.

MaryAnn, At our age it is a good test to see whats going on with our heart. I am suppose to go to and Irish Pub, to morrow with the RH's. I will get my corn beef and cabbage fix, or I might have there specialty shepherds pie. the desert is "Irish cream mouse cake" I will have to save room for that :) I have changed my Avatar, the picture was taken Sunday, when my neighbors took me out to dinner. They had the bartender fix me a pink lady, he had never heard of it.  My husband always fixed me one at Christmas and on my birthday. It was soooo good

Larry, glad you and Pat had a good day to gether.

Marilyne and Patricia, have a great day. I did have the beautician that lives here in the park, cut my hair yesterday.  Would you believe she only charges $15. cheaper then going upstreet to have it done. She is licence as she work 3 days a week in a beauty parlor. Last month when I went to the hematologist  they were not happy with me either. It was 170 over 80

Once a year I wear a "heart monitor"
for 24 hours then return it to the
dr. office.

They check it to see how my heart is
doing BP, heart rate  etc.

As I am in AFib continuously,  this
also shows up on my monitor.

MaryAnn
Is this the same type of "heart monitor"
that you have for just 24 hours???
Or do you have something else
more permanent.

Gloria, very nice avatar.  We’ve been having some nice weather, but today is overcast although warm. Larry has come down with a chest cold and went to the doctor right away.  The doctor gave him a shot and prescriptions for cough and antibiotics.  He is already feeling better but is being careful to rest and drink fluids.

Marilyne, I have trouble with “white coat syndrome” too.

Mary Ann

I like to think I do not have "white coat syndrome" but who knows.  My BP is usually in the 120-140 over 70 or 80 and the doctors have been satisfied with that.  I do take BP medicine.

The heart monitor is for 24 hours.  I think a previous one was for 48 hours but it was so long ago that I don't remember any more.  I have another PT session tomorrow and the heart building is about a mile from the PT building.

Marilyn, I have some things stuck to my skin, six I believe, and since my appointment was at 11 am, I can take the stickers off at that time tomorrow and throw them away.  The rest of the equipment will go in a bag and we will return the monitor after the PT session.  They make it so easy!  If things look bad, I think they will call me, otherwise I'll get a letter or e-mail to look in MyHealth online.

Gloria, I like  the new picture/avatar.

We are enjoying a very nice day too but rain is expected later today.  I just looked at radar and it  looks as if the rain will go south of us.

Good morning from the Interior.

I did join the Nextdoor Group and had to delete it from my Google Drive where it said it could copy everything, use my contacts and send email messages in my name. I'm glad Faye warned me to check. I also got this messages this morning. "Patricia, you have bonus postcards waiting!
Some of your closest neighbors are missing out. Click below to automatically send your 25 free postcard invitations!"

My neighborhood is evidently the thirty blocks in the Eastside Industrial area, and they are concerned about loose dogs and a possible prowler. I will give this a two-week trial.

Gloria, you have a lovely photo/avatar and seem to be growing younger. You have beautiful bone structure!

I have low blood pressure, usually 90 over 60 but that has its own issues because if I lay around and get up suddenly, I can temporary blackout. My main problems are in my sinuses or abdomen altho lately, my eyes have been almost closed in the morning due to the secretions. I'm not sure if that warrants a doctor or not. Sometimes they feel very dry on the inside of the eyelids by the outer corners.

I just received this message.

Hi Everyone.  After a somewhat rainy day yesterday we are seeing a little sun this morning but suppose to be cloudy all day with a fairly high chance of rain tonight.  I will go to coffee this morning after picking up my friend at assisted living.  I told our minister last evening at dinner that I am going to have to give up the Wisdom Class and why.  I just fixed Pat's breakfast and cleaned up the kitchen and that is becoming almost too much.  We got a coupon yesterday from Rudy Tuesdays for a buy one entree and get one of equal of less value for free.  That is too good to pass up so we will be going down late this afternoon for our main meal.  That will be it for today.

Last evening Scott was able to install the new Ring doorbell we got for Christmas and it is really neat.  Anytime someone approaches the house I get a ring on my phone and can see video of who it is.  I can also speak to the person without having to go to the door.  He also got his mother's new cell phone set up and working.

Mary Ann, you are certainly right about the key fob and the boys reading the action of it but not when a key is used.  Your explanation brought back memory of reading about that a long time ago.  Other than being a bit of a nuisance wearing the heart monitor that they have today isn't too bad.  I have done that test a couple of times.

Marilyne, sorry to hear you have a problem with your blood pressure.  That is something that has never been a problem for me as mine is usually around 100 over 60 something.  My cardiologist wants the lower number above 65 but it doesn't always get to that.

deAngel, hope you have a nice time with the Red Hats today and enjoy the corn beef and cabbage and that dessert sounds delicious.  I like you new Avatar.

Sandy, it sounds like you are getting good medical care.

Jean, glad your husband didn't wait until he got worse to see the doctor and hope he will soon be back to normal.

Patricia, I didn't remember to check out the Nextdoor site but from what you have said I think I won't bother.  I think we both experience the same low blood pressure.  However, I have never had a problem with passing out from it although will sometimes get dizzy if I bend over and stand back up.  I am also careful when I get up from bed to stand for a few seconds to let the blood circulate will.

Larry, this heart monitor has not been a bother, but I am not an active person and that may be a reason.  If I were more active, it might have been an inconvenience.  I can remove it later this morning, so I am going to wait until 11 am to get dressed and I can remove it then.  I have PT this afternoon and we will return the monitor when I am finished with the PT; the two places are near each other.

Our nice temperatures  have left and we probably will get some rain this afternoon.  Most will be south of us, but we will be included.  The radar did not show snow and our high today is to be in the low 40s.  I could see no snow this morning when I looked out the window.  Usually our north side snow remains, but two days of high 50s did away with it.  I know we will get more, but doesn't March bring April showers?

Almost all of the ice has disappeared from Lake Michigan at Grand Haven.  When the weather permits, work will resume on the pier.  They have been trying to get enough money to restore the catwalk, but the pier work must be finished first.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I just looked at Grand Haven, and it looks especially clear and pretty this morning.  Two people walking on the shore.  I look at the webcam every couple of days, and after all this time, I feel like I have actually been there! No such luck, however.  Good that your time with the heart monitor is almost up, and I hope the readings will bring you nothing but good news. :)

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I will hear about the monitor results in a day or two.  The stickers were hard to get off and I'm surprised some of my skin didn't come off with them.  I could throw the stickers away but I first had to get the cables out of them and I finally got out my scissors to cut them out.  Unless there is a problem, I will not see the cardiologist until May.  And if everything is OK and the blood test he will order is OK, I may not see him at all.  I think in four years I've seen him only once, maybe twice - I go every six months because I have A-fib.

I'm going for another PT shortly and I know we'll make more appointments.

Lunch first.

Mary Ann

JeanneP

Now the lake looks pretty today. Are you noticing that man in the hoist working?Looks like the are installing some kind of a Telephone pole that has a thing on the top.  Maybe wanting to get WiFi coming onto the Beach or better Tel. Reception.  People expect it now.
Not bad here to day as it stormed all night. Still not warm enough to enjoy going out without the winter coats.
The Bears I watch on Cam have now gone into their homes and will not be back it says until June. The eagles have gotten old enough to leave the nest most of the time its empty
Because of my Eye Appointment yesterday I didn't get my nap which has become a habit over the winter. I had a hard time keeping awake in late afternoon and had to go to bed early. So think today at 1pm going to take a little nap. They feel so good.

While I was having PT, Tom returned the heart monitor; the buildings are about a mile apart.  He got back to pick me up about 2 minutes after I was finished.  He got the mail, then left for a 3 pm meeting.  I will next see him when I see him!

We probably are around 35 degrees and no rain or snow yet.

I am now watching some golf in Mexico.  It is PGA tour and players from all over the world are playing.

I don't know, Jeanne, that pole is tilted and I doubt it would stay that way.  We'll have to wait and see what happens with it.

With Tom gone, I think I'll take a nap and I'm sure the cat will join me.

Mary Ann

Good morning from the Interior! Bright blue skies today which means colder temperatures with no cloud cover holding in the heat. We are expected to warm back up by the weekend. One surprising bit of info is that we've had more rain this winter than we did in last summer's rain. And last summer was a rainy one!

Equifax has reported today that 2.4 million customers than known previously were affected by the massive cybersecurity breach last year, bringing the total to about 148 million people.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/01/589854759/equifax-says-2-4-million-more-people-were-impacted-by-huge-2017-breach

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We awoke this morning to a beautiful sunny sky and it will be that way all day and will get into the mid-60's.  I have nothing on my schedule for today so will just have a nice quiet and restful day.  I did go to coffee yesterday and then last evening we did go to Ruby Tuesday's to take advantage of the buy one get one coupon we had.  We had another very good meal.  It has been very windy and rainy all afternoon and was still raining when we left but by the time to got to the restaurant the rain had stopped and the wind died down.

Mary Ann, glad you got along so well with the heart monitor.  I don't remember it being burdensome either.  Nice that where you had to return it was close to where you had PT and that Tom was able to take care of that task while you had PT.  Those April showers will be here before we know since time seems to pass so quickly anymore.  I may watch a little of the golf this afternoon.  However, we are coming into the March Madness season for college basketball and hope to watch a few games over the next few weeks until the big tournament is over.

Marilyne,  it is pretty amazing what we can see with the various web cams now available.

JeanneP, isn't it the pits to have to miss those afternoon naps.  I have been taking afternoon naps for well over 20 years now and find it usually restores me for a few hours.

Patricia, you have had an interesting winter so far.  One would think that Equifax and the other credit reporting bureaus would have had the best security around.  I read that article yesterday and saw it on the NBC news last evening.

Good Afternoon Everyone
from the stormy rocky coast of Maine.

Good day to stay indoors...

I joined "NextDoor" one day and
cancelled it the next.

As I live in the city there are hundreds of
apartment building and lots of people
who joined this in my community..

I just decided that I didn't want my name and
location broad cast to all the city
dwellers here...      So I opted to
get out,  fast!!

Sandy.  Now I got out of "Next Door" right after going through some of the signing up.  Seems the want to much info. No people show up in my area anyway and it just did not seem to be anything I would care for.
Now I was just watching the news at 5:30pm and showing such bad storms up the East Coast.  All the airports cancelled all flights. My G Daughter and family live Connecticut so hopeO.K. Is everything O.K up in your Area?
Her Husband had to be In Singapore all week at his office there and was suppose to get into NY back home today. I am wondering if he made it. She would not be able to drive down from home to NY Airport to pick him up. Roads are really bad and so much snow coming down. He will stay in the City if he made it that far.  Hope He has made it back that far....

Hi Everyone.  Our morning started out in the mid-40's and it is bright and sunny with no wind and headed into the mid-60's this afternoon. I stayed home all day yesterday and will likely do the same today.  I got the dishwasher emptied and the trash out and am just waiting for Pat to get up when I will probably fix her breakfast.  Yesterday afternoon Pat did some cooking and we had chicken from the Instant Pot, friend potatoes and onions and broccoli along with apple pie.  Fortunately there is enough left over to make us a good supper this evening as well.  I plan on watching some basketball and golf this afternoon.  In a little while I am going to order the rest of the pull-out shelves that we need for our lower kitchen cabinets and one for Pat's side of the bathroom sink.

Sandy, I also decided not to fool with the Next Door app.  The lady who runs our Home Owners Association will email us of anything that involves our neighborhood such as any criminal activity and I don't have anything to sell nor do I want to buy anything else that might be offered.  Glad you missed the worst of the storm.

JeanneP, from the news it sounded like your G Daughter's husband probably landed at an airport other than in New York.  Maybe he will be able to get home today.  How often does he have to make the trip to Singapore and back?
