Same overcast drizzle that we had yesterday, with no real measurable rain.  The local weatherman called this, a “hairspray” storm. However, it is snowing in the high Sierra, and the snowmelt from that, is what we need for our water supply.

I was planning to go to a couple of shoe stores today, and try to find something comfortable, but I don’t like to drive when I have to use the windshield wipers, so will wait until it’s all over and things have dried up.  AJ is going to Stanford for his quarterly blood work, and appointment with his doc, so he’ll be gone for a while.  I guess I have no choice but to stay home and do some housework! ::)  The problem is, that I usually just walk around and then end up going nothing except the usual daily laundry, kitchen, et al.

Good morning from the Interior! Yesterday I was excited because it was in the mid-forties and everything was melting just like Dorothy's witch in the Wizard. Today, the world is white again, sky, land, and air as we are having another gully washer of a snowstorm. Perhaps someone didn't get the Springtime memo? We are only expected to have a high of 37 today.

Larry, I have had Opera, Firefox, and Chrome and they all have had my information when I have uninstalled and then reinstalled at different times and computers. When I saw you had mentioned Opera, which I hadn't used in probably in more than one computer and five or six years, I downloaded it and all my previous info was right there.

I also like the Speed Dial but miss some of the services of FF. Chrome had gotten too bloated and FF freezes a lot so I'm not sure if I want straight Opera or not. I'm sure you're right that it plumbs our computers for basic info. I am not a fan of Microsoft's edge or Internet Explorer.

I remember Oscar once was kind enough to send me a disc of Linux but at the time never did anything with it. He had just moved to Florida and had the roof blown off during that hurricane so never felt right about bothering him for more Linux instructions.

I have two cell phones, one here and one in my purse and need to recharge each evening even if they haven't been used. This past year has been my first time with smartphones so I'm not sure of how they would typically be. I rarely call anyone as I hate to spend time on a phone, so love emailing and texting. I'm also familiar with using texting from work and everyone seems to do it here.

Farrah is having a time with her breakfast. In her attempts to paw out the kibble, she has driven it all over the living room. She will lower her body to peer in and about and then stick her paw in the general area and sweep or pull! I keep changing the inner cardboard accordion arrangement, but it isn't slowing her down.

Today at 11 AM I will be going down to see the hairdresser who will be coming here for cuts. Since she will be charging the same senior rate as my regular place, this would be more about convenience and to see the results on the five who signed up.

On the 16th, also at 11 AM, there will be a presentation about meal replacements for seniors. Since I qualify by age and am unfamiliar with the program, I'll stop by and listen. Since I don't qualify for Meals On Wheels or state or federal programs, I probably won't here, and I'm not entirely sure what meal replacement means but it should be interesting to find out.

I went out to lunch with friends and loved the humidity in the air yesterday so was a bit tired to see the returning snow this morning. Everything had smelled so fresh, and the brown, leafless birch trees with their interspersed globs of snow reminded me of pussy willows. That is if they were several feet tall.

We had a lovely lunch at a new place called, "I wash- You dry." The owner makes homemade soups, big thick sandwiches with different types of bread and the usual accompaniment of cookies, bars, and small cakes, daily. We had clam chowder, both white and red, potato soup, vegetable soup, and a French Onion. They were all delicious!

The place wasn't very large with only six tables, and the decor was sparse and well done so I think we found a new favorite place. I like supporting local businesses over chains, and this place was that as the owner was born here and her great, great Grandfather came over from Yugoslavia during the gold rush in the late eighteen hundreds.

Mary Ann

For anyone who does not read in Soda Shoppe, Gloria De's nephew posted yesterday that she was in the hospital with a mild heart attack.  Today he posted that she may go home tomorrow.  You might want to read the posts.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

Thanks, Mary Ann for posting about Gloria De.  I’ll check out the Soda Shoppe.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I saw the message from Gloria de's nephew in Soda Shoppe, and I'm happy to see that she will likely be able to go home tomorrow.  It looks like her nephew is taking good care of her!  I'm glad he's there this winter, and she isn't alone like she used to be.

Patricia - I love that name for the restaurant where you went for lunch.  "I Wash - You Dry",  is cute and original.  The menu sounds good too . . . soup and sandwich is my favorite, for either lunch or dinner.

Mary Ann

After Tom had some work done on his car, he picked me up and took me to a funeral home visitation (long-time friend, but not close) and after that we went to Arnie's for supper.  I had fish and chips; the fish was cod and the chips were French fries.  The fish was very hot and that's the way I like my food.

We had a nice day with the temperature getting to 38 degrees.  I notice we will get warmer for a few days, then the temp will dip, however, no snow is predicted.  We have so little and I don't want to take any of the NE snow.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  Today starts are as a very chilly 32 degrees but will be getting into the 50's later today.  We also have a fire warning as our humidity is to be between 15 and 20% today.  This morning I will pick up my friend from assisted living and we will go downtown for coffee.  Before I pick him up I will make a quick stop at Walmart to pick up some prescriptions for both Pat and I.  This afternoon I plan on attending the funeral service for the wife of one the men who is in our coffee group.  Then I will watch some of the basketball games as the big NCAA Tourney gets underway.

After dinner at the church last night we picked up our grocery order from Walmart and Scott came on out to the house.  Jennifer is sick and stayed home where she needed to be.  Scott was here for only an hour or so and he wasn't feeling up to par.  We had beef stew at dinner and beef often riles up his IBS as it did last evening.

Mary Ann, glad you haven't been having to use DSL.  I hesitate to make changes in my TV or Internet service.  However, last evening I asked Scott to look into going with a different cellphone company as we are paying a very large price for what we have with AT&T.

Marilyne, I have never heard the term "hairspray" storm before but it is a pretty good description of a fine light rain.  If you went shoe shopping I hope you found what you wanted.  Pat has to get her shoes from a specialty store and told me yesterday evening that next month, after the Master's Golf Tournament she wanted to get another pair of school for summer wear.

Patricia, it seems you have had a pretty long and snowy winter up your way.  I expect folks there are really anticipating Spring.  I think I have tried almost all of the browsers.  I used Firefox for several years and then used Chrome for several more until I started having problems with it on both my desktop and laptop computers.  That caused me to go to Opera, which I also use as my browser on my iPhone.  I never cared much for Internet Explorer but really find the Edge Browser stable and once I got all the bookmarks set I don't mind using it.  I use it for one of the two crossword puzzles I work each afternoon.  I am pretty sure that one can just download the software for Linux.  I had it on one of my computers at one time but never did much with it and found trying to keep two systems up to date to be not worth the effort.  You mentioned Oscar and it reminded me of getting to meet him at the Atlanta Bash.  It sounds like Farrah is not tiring of the box where you put her food.  That is an interesting name for the new eating place.  I miss the connection to food as it sounds like a laundromat name.  Glad the food was so good.

angelface555

Good morning from a still snowy Interior. After numerous years, decades yet, of little to no snow, this winter is shaping up to be one for the record books! We usually are well into spring by this time and instead our weather is as MaryAnn described hers.

Larry, with so much competition and trademarking, you need an excellent original name to describe the services or product you have on offer. I wash-you dry evokes washing dishes in the kitchen after a family meal, or at least it is for the family vibe she is going for.

I am so sorry to hear of Gloria's newest heart attack. I am also so glad that she has her nephew there for her. She is such a good friend with a loving personality and a very strong woman. I hope she can go home today where I know Taffy is waiting for her.

MarsGal

Good morning everyone, or I hope it is for you.

My best wishes to Gloria for a speedy recovery.

This morning started out with Shan crossing my path at the bottom (thank goodness) of the stairs. I had to do a quick twist to keep from stepping on him and now my hip hurts a lot when I walk. Well, there goes my plan to vacuum today.

Lucy, in the meantime, has started shaking her head off and on, so I have to look that up and probably call the vet.

I am still dealing with trying to get my taxes completed. I have some 1099-Rs that I have to send in and wonder if TurboTax allows for uploading scans of them or if I have to send them with my payment. This is the first time I've done retirement payout other than SS. Shan and Oscar had to be shut out of the room yesterday because they were being too pesty while I was working on them. They were not happy. Of course they only showed up when I started work on the taxes, not the rest of the morning when I wasn't. They have incredible timing.

It is 33o with high clouds, but the weather calls for it to clear off sometime this morning. Good, sunny days are welcome.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We have a truly beautiful day ahead.  We will be getting up to 75 degrees this afternoon with sunny skies.  I had a great nights sleep last night and feel like a new person.  The night before I hadn't slept well and was very tired from the time I got up until I went to bed for the night.  I did go to coffee and then in the afternoon attended the funeral I mentioned yesterday.  I just plan on a nice quiet day at home today with some good basketball watching this afternoon and evening.  I need to finish up filing the taxes and need to work on Pat's laptop and update the spare I have here in my office, which I haven't had on for quite awhile.

Last night Pat dropped her new phone on the floor and the back came off and she wasn't able to find it.  I got down on the floor and looked under her chair and all around only to find it right in front of my side table in plain site.  With this wood flooring you never know where things are going to land.

Patricia, I would think the restaurant name would be unique.  As long as the food is good word of mouth advertising should help them do well.  It sounds like your weather is returning to the way it used to be.  Things seem to cycle sometimes.

MarsGal, sorry to read that you hurt your hip yesterday and do hope you are feeling better today.  I guess the only plus is that you could delay doing the vacuuming.  I file my taxes on line with Tax Act and haven't had to submit any 1099-Rs or other document but just keep everything together in case of an audit for three years.  The information on the documents has already been reported to the IRS so the computer can just match it up. I am not a tax advisor but that has been my experience.

MarsGal, I use Turbo Tax and I E-file and in that case it is not necessary to have three copies of 1099R.  If you print your forms, Turbo Tax will print three copies of 1099R.  I still print my tax forms for my own benefit, but E-filing is so easy.  I will say if I get a refund, I E-file and if I have to pay, I send in the form.  My State tax form is not included in the "free" E-file, so I send that in regardless of a refund or paying because it costs around $20 to E-file for the State.

Kendrick often is wherever I am walking so I do have to watch out for him.  He especially likes to be near me at the top of the stairs because his food is near.  Cats are funny that way, aren't they?

Basketball has taken over for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, much to my dismay.  They're on CBS here.  I haven't checked, but I think the games are not on every night.

Lake Michigan at Grand Haven looks so pretty now.  The sun is shining and there is no snow.  The water looks cold, however.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I'm grateful that my husband does our taxes.  He also uses Turbo Tax, and so far, it has worked well for us, as we always get a reasonable refund. If AJ could no longer do the taxes, for any reason, I would likely pay someone or go with a company like H&R Block.

Mary Ann - I looked at Grand Haven, this morning, and it was bright and beautiful!  I'll be sorry when those trees leaf out, and I can no longer see much of the beach.  I'm wondering what the wood structure is, to the right of webcam?

MarsGal - I can relate to your sore hip!  I was always dodging or sidestepping Winnie, as he would criss-cross in front of me,  when I would walk through the house or backyard.  I remember that sudden twist of the hip to avoid tripping.

Larry - I hope that Pat's phone was not seriously damaged by having the back come off?  Seems I'm always dropping something - usually my computer glasses or reading glasses.  Glasses seem to blend in with the carpet, or somehow work their way under a chair or table.  I usually have to use a flashlight to find them - then a grabber to pick them up.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, there are several buildings along the road in Grand Haven and one of them is a restaurant, Bil-Mar.  I think because it's white that the building is the restaurant.  I think the pergola tops are part of it but I'm not sure.  I have not been in the restaurant since before I retired!

Mary Ann

FlaJean

Grand Haven is beautiful this morning, Mary Ann.

We’ve always done our own taxes.  The last several years my husband has done them and then I go over them carefully before I sign.  Good thing I checked them this year as Larry had put in the wrong bank routing number for receiving the refund.  That would have caused a problem.  All is well, however, as the bank account showed the refund deposited several weeks ago.

The pollen is really bad this year, and that means allergy time for me.  The azaleas are in full bloom here in our area and today will be mid 70s.

angelface555

Good morning from the Interior! It is still fresh today but expecting warmer weather going into the weekend. Larry, this is nothing like our older style of weather. We haven't seen that since the late nineties. The weather folks used to say a hundred year storm or weather pattern and after a while only began issuing alerts.

The ice storm we had in 2005 that paralyzed the city was one on no books, record or otherwise. Now they, along with freezing rain, are a standard event. In older weather patterns, the snow would be gone, and we would be in the fifties by now instead of the thirties.

I know exactly what everyone means by dodging cats or dropping glasses or phones. On my last phone, it seemed as if I would drop it and lose the back weekly. With my new smartphone, I try to be very careful, but I still drop it on occasion.

MaryAnn, the cam shows a nice sunny scene, and yes it is lovely. I wish I saw that out my window! I don't have much paperwork to file with my taxes, only about four or five items to keep track of and I've always done them myself. However, this year when AARP tax volunteers come here this year, I may let them go over it. I'm beginning to become forgetful so it might be a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I used the free TurboTax Freedom online as I have in previous years. It did not file or print out 1099Rs, Larry, but it did file the PA W-2S form that I had to fill in with the 1099R info. The form says I must submit the supporting documents, so I sent their copies with my payment. I have no idea if that is just for paper filers or includes the e-files. When, at the end, it said I PA needed additional documents, the only thing it reported and printed was the Payment Voucher that goes with the check.  I'll just have to wait and see if the Feds want the physical copies. I am very sure if they are missing something they will let me know.

At this point I am all for MAJOR tax reform that throws out most of all these sometimes arcane, obsolete,  and seemingly contradictory rules, and make everything much more simple.

I checked online about Lucy and her head shaking and took a look at her ears. Her ears look good, no redness, crud, or was build-up. What I discovered that polyps can cause head shaking as well as loud breathing, which she had been doing recently too. Then it could be allergies. Now, I ask you, can all three of my cats have allergies? Shan is not snotting, but he does have a wet nose and does the heaving bit that can be associated with asthma. Okay, Okay! I might be worrying over the little buggers way too much, but better safe than sorry. She goes in tomorrow for the vet to check. It seems the whole winter I've had one or the other of the cats in for something.

Shan had decided it is nap time on my arm as I type. I should mention, one of his very favorite "toys" are the tea bag wrappers. As soon has he sees me ready to make tea, he goes nuts. I am constantly fishing wadded tea bag wrappers from underneath things (mostly my little kitchen storage/microwave unit and the oven). My bed had even been adorned with the things.

It is partly sunny now and 36o. I don't know what weather forecast my sister is listening to, but she says we are in for 5 inches of snow Tuesday or Wednesday. The weather program on my Windows only calls for light snow on Tuesday. If I check one of the other apps, it will probably tell me something else.

My hip is feeling somewhat better this afternoon, so maybe by tomorrow it will be almost better.

Marilyne, I am going to have to start referring to Shan as the Quantum Cat. He seems to teleport himself from one room to another without me seeing or hearing him. I check to see where he is, but by the time I get moving he is either underfoot or laying nonchalantly in the room I am heading. He seems to just materialize out of nowhere. How does he DO this.

Speaking of things Quantum and other scientifically interesting subjects (especially space related), I've started watching Isaac Arthur's space science webcasts on YouTube. These are usually anywhere from 20 minutes to almost an hour, so I only tend to watch one a day. He spends a lot of time with the practical and applied aspects of space science and tackles some of the forward-looking applications and possibilities in light of what we know now, and not so much with speculations and concepts that are yet to be proven.

angelface555

MarsGal, are all your cats up to date on a product to control pests such as Revolution or Advantage? The reason I ask is head shaking is a very common sign of ear mites that all fur-bearing animals have but not all cats are sensitive toward. They may develop allergies at a later date however if left untreated. I found this out in 2009 when one of my cats developed plum sized blood cysts around his ears that were caused by ear mites. They had to drain Thomas's ears, put in drainage tubes and he wore a cone for thirty days.

There are all types of home remedies but the only ones that actually work are from a vet.

What Are the General Symptoms of Ear Mites in Cats?
Excessive scratching and rubbing of ears.
Head shaking.
Hair loss and dermatitis.
Black or brown waxy secretion.
Strong odor.
Inflammation of the ear.
Obstruction of ear canal with coffee ground-like debris.
Scratches or scabs near ear.

MarsGal, it is my understanding that when you mail in your tax forms, you must include a copy of 1099R and any other forms they ask for.  I file by E-file via Turbo Tax and I'm sure something is included, but I do not have to print a form to enclose; Turbo Tax does it all.

Thanks you all for your wishes and prays. I just love my cyber friends.

Hi Everyone and Happy St. Patrick's Day.  We are having rain today and just heard a clap of thunder.  There is a big St. Patrick's Day parade planned for downtown Augusta this morning.  Hopefully the rain won't dampen the spirits of the parade (probably not a word that should be used in this context on this day as expect there will be plenty of spirits consumed as there are numerous places to do that on the main street of Augusta).

Pat and I both had a good day yesterday.  However, today I don't seem to have any energy so plan on just staying in and resting.  I have fixed Pat's breakfast and mine and need to grind up some more cheddar cheese and that will probably be it for today.  I will miss my weekly meeting this morning but they will survive without me.

I saw these jokes and thought they were funny so wanted to share them:

St. Patrick's Day Jokes

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Q. Why do people wear shamrocks on St. Patrick's Day?
A. Regular rocks are too heavy.

Q. Why can't you borrow money from a leprechaun?
A. Because they're always a little short.

Q. How can you tell if an Irishman is having a good time?
A. He's Dublin over with laughter!

Q. How did the Irish Jig get started?
A. Too much to drink and not enough restrooms!

Mary Ann, I probably could save money if I used a different tax program for e-filing and this is the first year I will have paid this higher price.  However, I just don't have the energy to rework them in another program.  What I file next year will be less complicated as am pretty certain I will not be itemizing so I will decide then whether to continue this program or do something else.  Don't you have to buy a new Turbo Tax program each year?  I think cats are very smart and soon learn the routines involving their food.  Next week all of the basketball games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.  We do get both Wheel and Jeopardy on Saturday evenings although the Jeopardy is a rerun. Here when those programs are disrupted on the CBS station they are run on the NBC station as both stations are owned by the same company.  Their broadcast center is located in North Augusta and I go by that station all the time.  I expect the reason you have to submit the 1099 forms is that someone has to enter the data into their computer to be matched with what the companies have submitted.

Marilyne, if I can no longer do the income tax or am not around any more Pat will have to have someone do them for her.  I is likely that our son could do them as he always does his own but if he didn't want to do them she would have to hire someone.  There are numerous tax preparing company in our town.  Pat's phone wasn't damaged.  I think each time it is put on the charger it may turn the phone off and she hasn't gotten use to having to turn it on each morning.  The last couple of morning she has thought it hadn't charged and had run down when in fact it was charged and just needed to be turned on.  I can still bend over and pick things up although it seems to sap my energy.  Often I will also use the grabber as down Pat.

Jean, last year for some reason my bank rejected the refund check from our taxes and I got a check in the mail from the IRS with a letter saying why.  I checked all the routing information and it was correct and have no idea why it was rejected.  I will try for the direct deposit again this year and see if the same thing happens.  Some of the azaleas have already bloomed here and may have been damaged by the short periods of freezing weather several days.  I only had two little blooms on my miniature azalea bushes in front of my porch so hopefully the rest of the blossoms won't be impacted by those short period of freezing temperature.

Patricia, glad you are to have some warmer weather this weekend.  The weather patterns seem to be very unpredictable about everywhere.  I have pulled my iPhone off my night stand a couple of times when the charging cord got tangled with something else.  Fortunately it hasn't hurt it and I do try to be very careful.  Several years ago I did go to a CPA friend and he looked over the return I had completed and said he saw nothing wrong.  Pat was concerned I might be missing something.  One year I also had one of the AARP tax volunteers go over my filled out return with the same result.  The documents we get anymore, including the itemized deductions, specifically tell us what line on what form to put the information. That is a very nice St. Patrick's Day graphic you shared.  I liked the colors.

MarsGal, I haven't had to submit any documents with the e-filing either to the Federal or the States.  In fact in Georgia the last two years I lived there I didn't have to fill the state at all due to certain regulations involving seniors.  However, South Carolina does require a filing and we pay considerable tax to the State.  I do get a payment voucher for South Carolina as have had to pay additional beyond withholding amounts each year in this State.  Cats do suffer allergies as well as many of the conditions that humans can have.  Glad your hip was feeling better yesterday.

deAngel, so good to see your posting from yesterday and sure hope you are feeling better.  Your nephew did a super job of keeping us informed about your heart attack and hospitalization.

Mary Ann

And a Happy St Patrick's Day to everyone!

Tom said one street downtown was closed, probably for a parade.  I don't do parades any more!

Larry, I liked your St Pat's Day jokes.  Yes, I have to buy a new Turbo Tax each year but I can get one from Amazon for $40 and that's my only expense.  It's worth that amount to do my taxes, otherwise, I'd be sitting here using a calculator and have to fill in all the blanks.  It's easier on the computer to fill in the blanks and let the program do the arithmetic.

Mary Ann

wjoan

When I lived down in CA there were  a couple of streets that got closed down on St. pAT'S dAY.  wAS NO PARADE JUST iRISH pUBS  AND DANCING IN THE STREETS.  These were in S.F of course.  Sorry for the caps, got stuck and did not want to type it all over again.

Sandy

Oh boy,  would I love to eat lots of
cheese..   I love it.  All kinds.

But unfortunately,  I have stopped eating "dairy"
so cheese is out for me....
I actually feel better not eating dairy,  so
I am not tempted to go back my cheese loving
days!!!

Weather here is very "Springlike for New
England" ....  which means cool,  sunny,
windy, including East Winds off the ocean,
and generally weather that one has to dress
warm for.   Because if the cool doesn't
get ya,  the windy East Wind,  will  !!!!

Have a good day everyone.
I am staying home and watching the
the news,    which tends to make
my belly ache these days.
(Oh woe is us,  here in the USA!)

We’re having an overcast day and did have a rain shower a little earlier.  Our state legislators have voted for Florida to have Daylight Savings time year round but we have to have approval from US Congress.  It seems federal law permits a state to exempt itself from DST but not Standard time.  So at present we don’t know what will happen.  Suppose to reach a high of 74F today.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - St. Paddy’s day is a big deal here in the San Francisco area.  Lots of transported Irish citizens here, and they love to party!  A huge parade will be held in SF, regardless of weather . . . and it looks like it will be cold and rainy.  Also another parade closer to me here in San Jose, and big pub celebrations everywhere tonight.  Younger daughter partakes of the festivities, but she’s the only one in the family who does.  I think son and family went skiing this weekend, up by Lake Tahoe?  Older daughter and granddaughter will be staying home and watching the festivities on TV, as will AJ and I.

wjoan - They still close off streets, in many cities in the Bay Area. Things are a lot rowdier than they were back in the days that you and I remember.

Sandy - I took your advice a while back, and stopped watching the news!  Well, I do watch local, and of course I follow any serious breaking news story.  However, the day in and day out shock stories, the accusations, the nitpicking, complaining and tweeting, I skip over.  Just too hopelessly depressing, and unfortunately, nothing we can do about it.

FlaJean - Great news that Florida voted for year round DST!  I hope it is approved by Congress.  I also hope that here in CA, it will be on the next ballot.  This shifting back and forth is ridiculous, and seems that everyone is sick of it.  If I had my choice, I would want Standard Time year around, but I know I’m in the minority.

Patricia - I like your cute and colorful St. Patrick's Day card!

Marilyne, I know.  Parents in the last two generations seem to have spoiled the children and let them run loose.  All this young people with guns are one bad outcome of that.

Years ago we had a new minister who early in his tenure told us he heard that our city was 40% Dutch. 40% Polish and 20% everything else.  We fell into the "everything else" category.  Other nationalities have increased, especially Asians, but we still are predominantly Dutch.  I know there will be an Irish parade and people will celebrate in the bars and taverns, but we will have nothing like more Irish cities have.  I'm Northern (Orange) Irish anyway.  One man wore an orange tie to work one year and someone cut the tie off him.  As far as I know, he had no Irish blood and he knew what would happen when he wore that tie.

It's been a beautiful day so far with the temperature in the high 40s and the sun is shining brightly.  I can't see the sky so I don't know if there are clouds are not.
