Mary Ann, I will give it a shot.  :)

MarsGal

It is a shame that Patricia will no longer be posting here. I always hate it when I find out that I inadvertently missed or forgot something, or I was not articulate or precise enough so that I was misunderstood. I miss her posts about Farrah and Alaska.

I did my annual trek to the doctor for my checkup and blookwork this morning. Afterwards, I stopped at a local restaurant for one of their fabulous omelets with an extra side of bacon. I don't have these very often, but I was starving after not eating all morning, and decided to treat myself. Some of it came home with me. It was a bit much to eat.

Tomorrow my sister and I are going to Red Lobster for lunch. I think I may have already mentioned that.

It started out at about 35oF this morning but is to read 60oF later on today. Mu daffodils are gorgeous, but the lawn is a mess. I am thinking about trying to find someone to help with the mowing and yardwork this year. Just not sure I can afford much.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, it is a "tradition" for me to bring home half of whatever I eat in a restaurant.  I'm not skinny by any means, but whatever the portions are, they are too large for me.  I end up eating the second half for my next meal.  Tom is  having lunch with a friend and will bring back a Subway for me.  We had two Subways in the area and Tom told me they closed the one we frequented.

We're fortunate in our condo complex that our outside work is done for us.  I know it is past time for the lawn people to start, but with snow on the ground, work can't be done.  We are to get warmer weather as the week wears on and it could be the end of the snow, but I heard there is another storm headed this way.  Mother Nature is just shoving things along because we had a late fall.  There's nothing I can do about it except stay inside!

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Mary Ann, have you tried their Reuben Salad? I really liked it, eat half and saved the rest for sandwich filler.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, I had never heard of a Reuben Salad at Subway.  I'll think of it when/if I go there, but today Tom brought this home for me; he was meeting a friend and I don't go with him on those occasions.  Tom knows what I like in a Subway sub (no cucumbers).  I did finish most of my sub today and only had about an inch or so left, so disposed of that.

I'm looking at the weather heading here and there is not only rain, but freezing rain and snow too.  I understand with this next storm it will pass very quickly.  I sure hope so!

Now I dont seem to know who was named Patricia, what name was she in under? I know lots of people now who don't get onto a computer anymore. Some just use their I phones and say very little on texting. Hardly any of my family use their computers now. I miss the times when the E-M started. I must have dozens of people I Emailed to all the time. All over the world. But then I miss my writing letters and going snail mail also. I still do a few. Always loved writing letters for being young. Had so many Pen Pals growing up.

JeanneP, I had lots of pen pals. I started writing to Joyce in Bradford. England when I was 12, and we kept up the correspondence till she passed away a few years ago. Then her husband wrote to me. I also had pen pals in Australia and New Zealand

Hi Everyone. It is already 68 degrees outside to start the morning but is suppose to get to only 76 degrees this afternoon.  Yesterday was one of those down days I have every so often when I was so tired I didn't feel like doing anything except what had to be done.  I laid down for two hours in the late morning and then after a quick lunch laid down again for another two hours or so.  We did meet Scott at the Church for dinner and then he came out and spent about 3 hours with us.

I will be picking up my friend at the assisted living facility later this morning and we will go to coffee.  I have several errands I want to run either before I pick him up or after but none of them should take very long.  Later this afternoon Pat and I plan on going to Ruby Tuesday's to take advantage of their buy one and get one entree.  It has been a few days since we have been there and that coupon is just too good to pass up.  That will be our main meal of the day.  I guess it is my Scottish heritage coming to play.

Joy, going to the dentist isn't fun but sure is a lot better than it used to be.  Even getting the deadening shot isn't bad anymore and the equipment is so much better.  Years ago I let my teeth go unattended for a long time and then paid the price as had to have lots of dental work.  At that time I went to the Dental College in Kansas City.  That saved a lot of money but took a long time as the work was being done by advanced dental students with supervision by an instructor.  Fortunately I had a lot of saved up annual leave and used it for the appointments.  We have a dental college here but have no plans to use them.  I am happy with the dentist we now have and he is young so should be there as long as I need him.  I have had a lot of different dentists over the years as we moved quite a bit. I don't intend to be either cold or too warm even if it raises my electric bill.

Mary Ann, thanks for sharing the info on Patricia's decision not to post here as I won't be worried about her being ill.  I sure hope she will decide to come back and join us here as I miss her postings.  I take it that Kendrick Lamar is from Michigan?  I also admired Barbara Bush.  I sure hope that freezing rain and snow stay away from your area.

Marilyne, that must have been quite an adventure traveling with an RV all the way from California to Michigan.  I think with dentists we can either pay them now or pay a lot more in the future.

Joan, glad to read that Candy is doing OK and that she was able to get an appointment next week.

deAngel, did you read the book that Barbara Bush wrote some years ago.  In addition to the large family George was always meeting new folks and bringing them home to dinner. When he got into politics she started a file card system of everyone they knew and met along the way.  Apparently family was the top priority for her.  Wish I could share our nice weather.  We are going to have a few cooler days the remainder of the week.

MarsGal, that omelet sounds good.  Where I go for coffee they make good omelets as does IHOP but they are so big.  I think they use three eggs.  Sometimes Pat and I will split on but anymore we seldom go out for breakfast as Pat doesn't get up and ready to leave the house very early and she needs to eat when she gets up.  I hope you and your sister enjoy your visit to Red Lobster today.  I do hope your budget will allow you to get the help you need with your yard. Firehouse Subs just introduced a new Reuben Sub and I saw that Arby's also recently added the Reuben sandwich to their menu.  This must be the new thing on the block.

JeanneP, I hope I never get to the point where I don't want to use my computers.  It has become a way of life for me and fills up many of my hours.  I am cutting down on some of the sites that send daily emails. I have never liked writing letters and much prefer emails.  I do some texting but not a lot and with limited numbers of people.

Good morning everyone.

It has clouded up again with promises of rain showers. It is 42o now and is only to get to 50o today. It never made in anywhere near 60 yesterday.

Larry, Firehouse Subs name sounded familiar so I looked it up. I am sure I saw something about one opening in the area. What I found is that we do indeed have several in the Central PA area, but not close to me. There are two in York, and one each in Lancaster, Hanover and Carlisle. Carlisle is the closest, but still just out of my usual driving range, not to mention the horrific Route 81 traffic. Route 81 is a huge, IMO, accident prone area from the Middlesex exit (lots of truck facilities there) all the way past Carlisle. I have avoided traveling that way for years. Nothing they've done to the road has improved it so far.

I got my lab results back already. I haven't compared it with the last one yet, but two things stand out. One is that my overall Cholesterol is back down under 200 and, horrors, my Vitamen D level is way down. I am going to have to make sure I take it every day and find out how much I need to up my daily intake. Right now I have been, when I think of it, one 2000 calcium and one 100 Vit D every other day because I am already getting 1000 calcium in my daily vitamin which I have been alternating with the cal/D combo.

I must go out in a little while to feed George's cats and pick up a few items at the store on the way back. Will check in later.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, I take two 500mg calcium daily along with a 2000IU Vitamin D capsule - along with other pills both prescript and non.

Today is starting a few days of NO RAIN and increasing temps as the week progresses.  It is 35 degrees now, but supposed to get into the high 40s or low 50s.  I might even venture to the mailbox today as the road is clear.

We have at least one Firehouse Sub in Grand Rapid as I've seen it advertised, but I don't know where it is - I'll find out!

Larry, I think Kendrick Lamar is not from Michigan.  He was featured in a display at the Gerald R Ford Museum along with other like musicians - and don't ask me who any of the others were.  Tom and friends and I were there last fall.

I have a book written either by or about Barbara Bush.  I bought it years ago and never finished it because it was long.  I don't see good enough to read now so I'll leave the book for others to read or send to the library across the road.

While it looks cold, Grand Haven looks pretty what with the sun shining.  The reds really stand out.

Mornin all.  Our night time temps  are in the 40's now and today is forecasting 71.  We shall see.

Marilyne

I'm off to a slow start this morning . . . didn't wake up until 8:00, which is late for me.  Maybe because I had a restless night, and didn't get to sleep until sometime between 1:00 and 2:00?  I think I was wide awake from watching the San Jose Sharks, beat the Anaheim Ducks, earlier in the evening.  I'm not a fan of pro basketball or football, but I have come to really enjoy NHL hockey . . . probably because the Sharks are the first professional sports team located in San Jose.  Also, three or four of the married players live right here in my little town, and we sometimes see them at the local restaurants, walking dogs, etc.

Mary Ann & Mars Gal - I got the same low level Vitamin D lab results a couple of years ago. My doctor actually called me at home, and advised me to start taking 2000 mg of Vit D, every day.  I was very good about it for a long time, but the last time I ran out of caps, I didn't replace them. I know my bones are extremely porous, and I will get a new jar of caps today!  Thank you for reminding me!  I also take 500 mg of C, and one B-50, every day.

Larry - Our trip in the RV, was a memorable one.  It belonged to our oldest daughter and husband, (she is since divorced), and was a lot of fun.  We pulled our Volkswagen bug behind us, so we could get around and sight see, in all the states from here to there.  We loved Chicago, and always planned to return and see more, but we never did.  Then drove up to Wisconsin, and over to Minneapolis, where we parked in the driveway of AJ's cousin for a couple of days.  After Duluth and Superior, we drove home through South Dakota, then Wyoming and on back to California.  We found something to like and enjoy in every state, in both directions.

Marilyn, I would loved to have taken a trip like you took in the RV, however, my dad and I took a few trips west as far as the mountains.  I've probably told this before but it was always funny to my dad and me.  Dad lived a few years in West Virginia (where I was born) and considered he was adept at driving in the mountains (no comparison as to height).  We got to the edge of the Rockies and Dad took over driving.  Eventually things leveled out and it was OK for Mary Ann to drive.  We were near Sheridan Wyoming and Ten Sleep Canyon.  We had a 1952 Chevy Coupe (model unknown) with stick shift.  We got to the Canyon and the road went down and around and down and around (horseshoe turns).  You could look out the passenger window and see where you were going for some time.  It was fascinating driving - and I was doing the driving.  When we got down to a motel, Dad realized he was more scared thinking about where he had been than he had while driving down the road.  He never worried about my driving in the mountains again.  My dad was a teacher and he got a job most summers but always left a few weeks for a trip.  We did go in other directions, but most of our trips went out west.  Until December 2014, I had not been as far as California, but only to the mountains.

We don't have mountains in Michigan but we do have many scenic places, lots of small lakes as well as the Great Lakes, lots of trees, hills.  My folks chose wisely when they decided to move to Michigan.

Good afternoon, what can I say it is cool again and rain

Larry, No I have not read the book Barbara Bush wrote, but I am sure it would be very interesting. Gorbachev, remembered her as being warm and astute. She had a warm relationship with his wife when they visited Texas. I read in today's paper.

I too am so sorry, Patricia is not going to post here. I also enjoyed reading about Alaska, I learn so much. Of course we had our kitties to talk about

MaryAnn, nice to read about your trips to the moutains.  I drove from Denver to Calf. in my sons small   sports car over the Rockies, that was quite and adventure. He had the top down part of the ways

I'm baaaaack!

Lunch was good at Red Lobster, but I ended up not getting any Lobster Bisque (which I had wanted to try) nor Crab Cakes nor Lobster Mac&Cheese. I discovered they are doing battered fried fish and fries now, so I just had to get that instead. Of course, it was more calories than the others and more food than I expected. I brought home two of the four fried fish and half the fries for dinner tonight. Sue and I were mostly talking about plays, operas, and a few TV shows.

Mary Ann and Marilyne, I am taking 1000IU calcium and 2000IU of Vitamin D-3. Because I didn't know how much more D-3 I could take (of course, I never asked) I alternate it with the 1000IU D-3 and 500IU Calcium which is in my multivitamin. I often forget to take either one, though. The doctor checked my Vitamin D level this year and it is way down.  Since this wasn't checked for last year I don't know where it was before. I'll wait till Friday to see if the doctor's office calls before I call them. This year I am due to get a DEXA scan so I have to schedule that soon. I've been oh so slowly creeping up on Osteopenia. My sister, who is two and a half years younger than me has had it for years.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Your vacation and drive through the mountains in Wyoming sounds wonderful. Did you go to Yellowstone or Grand Teton's?  We didn't go to either one, and have always been sorry.  One of those things where you think you will return soon, and see more, but you never do.  After visiting Mt. Rushmore, in South Dakota, we crossed into Wyoming, but went south to Cheyenne, and then to Denver.  We were used to driving on winding mountain roads here in California and the other Western states, but it was a whole different story in that huge RV!  Maneuvering that monster coach around those sharp curves in the Rockies, was what is called "white knuckle" driving!  Pulling the VW, behind, made it all the more of a harrowing drive.

Gloria - It was probably fun driving a small sports car over the Rockies, and into California.  Did you drive over the High Sierra, around Lake Tahoe, or did you stay on the flatlands through Nevada?  Where was your final destination in California?

Mary Ann

#8417
Gloria and Marilyn - another car we had, this with automatic transmission, was a Corvair.  I loved the Corvair, in fact, we had three of them.  At different times, we went to Yellowstone, Glacier, the Tetons, Oak Creek Canyon, Colorado Rockies, Ten Sleep, Grand Canyon, Indian ruins, Mormon Tabernacle - I'd have to get out a map to see if I've missed anything.  These were not on a single trip.  Before we'd start out on a trip, I'd look at the map to see what was available.  Some things we had to pay to see, but most we did not.  Cheapskates!!!

I took several great trips (tours) with Jim and most of those were in the East and/or Canada.  Dad and I went north from the Soo to a big waterfall.  Funny thing - our friend, Christine, was with us.  Christine had been born in Norway but lived in the US for probably 50+ years.  This was in the old days before passports etc.  I was driving and we came back to the US and stopped to check in.  An officer looked in, asked "everyone born in the US?"  I said "yes" and he let us go merrily on our way.  Christine said, as we drove away, "I wasn't".  We just kept on going.  We're close to Canada and there are a lot of scenic things to see so we'd take a short trip north to see what was there.  I don't travel now, but I do have great memories.

The last vacation trip I took was in 2012 when I flew to Sooke BC on Vancouver Island with Jim and his son to visit Jim's sister who lives in Sooke.  We flew.

I haven't done a lot of foreign travel (I do not consider Canada foreign) but one year I flew to England with my nephew Terry and his mother (Norm's former wife) and another time flew to Germany and Denmark, then back to Germany.  I did take a trip to Guatemala in 1976 because I wanted to see the Mayan country.

Enough about my travels, where have others gone?

Mary Ann

Got all my Winter clothes packed up and Summer clothes hung up.  I am ready.  LOL

Mary Ann

Good luck, Joan, I hope you made the right decision.  I will say we've been around 50 degrees today and every day for a week we are to be 50 or higher and no rain and NO SNOW!  I hope things stay the same - for you and for me.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

joan - Still too cold here, to put away the Winter clothes! I'm still wearing a cardigan sweater over a long sleeve T-shirt. I don't plan to switch over to summer clothes, until May Day, and even then, I'll be cautious.  I hate to be cold!  I'm glad that Candy will be seeing the doctor next week.

MarsGal - Your Red Lobster lunch sounds delicious!  I love crab cakes, and most likely would order those, or the fish and fries for lunch.  For dinner, I like those variety plates, where you get a number of entrees to choose from.  I haven't been to RL in a couple of years, but now that I'm thinking about it, it sounds like a good idea!

Mary Ann - You and your dad, saw a lot more than we did.  We pretty much stuck to side trips that were near the major interstates. We were afraid to get too far off the beaten path, in that huge RV.  Mostly we were on I-50.  We did stay a couple of days in Salt Lake City, and went to the Mormon Tabernacle, and all the other Mormon religious sites, displays, movies, statues, etc.  I thought it was a beautiful city, with fascinating history.  Then we stayed in Denver overnight, and tried to see as much as possible.

We've been to Canada, but only to BC, and then on into Calgary, Alberta.  I liked Vancouver, but thought Victoria, BC, was especially beautiful.  I was there in the summer of 1953, with my parents.  It was the year of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, and the city of Victoria was decorated in honor of that event.

MarsGal

Good Luck with the summer clothes, Joan. I woke up this morning to 28o, and depending on which weather forecast I pay attention to, it is either not getting out of the 40s or will get up to 55o. It is partly sunny (or is it partly cloudy) right now.

Nothing spectacular on the agenda today. I might stop at BJ's or the grocery store on the way back from checking George's cats.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone
from the Sunny and in the 40's.    Reminds
me of my year in Port Townsend, Washington.

My Summer and Winter clothes are pretty
much the same... except in the Summer I
wear more skirts  (to let the fresh air refresh)..
I layer a lot in the Winter Months ...

All is well here...

Sandy

Hi Everyone.  Our day is starting out cool and it looks like 70 will be our high for the day.  The housekeeper will be here this morning and I am going to bring Elizabeth out for a couple of hours so she can do some work for us straitening the attack and helping take some things to the attic from the garage.  She called me this morning and wanted to come and do some work.  That will be pretty much for today.

Yesterday I got a letter from my cardiologist saying she was moving joining a cardiac group in Aiken.  I don't want to go clear to Aiken to see her and certainly don't want to go into that hospital if needed sometime in the future.  She did recommend one of the cardiologist in the group she is leaving so will call this morning and schedule and appointment to replace the one I have scheduled with her in July.

MarsGal, to bad you aren't close to a Firehouse Subs as they are the best, in my opinion.  Congratulations on your Cholesterol count.  I have taken calcium for quite a few years after I was checked and found I do have Osteopenia.   I was taking it with the Vitamin D but stopped that when I started taking the B Complex daily and it contains 100% of the daily requirement of Vitamin D.  Glad you enjoyed the Red Lobster meal even if you didn't end up ordering what you had expected to order.  Do they still serve the little cheese biscuits?

Mary Ann, maybe when Tom is out driving sometime he will be near a Firehouse Subs and can get one to bring home.  Thanks for the info on Kendrick Lamar.  It seems that the display in the Ford Museum is sort of strange for a Presidential Museum.  Glad you had sunshine yesterday.  You saw some beautiful places on your trips.  Were you ever in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho?  When I was moving back from Alaska I got there around 5 pm to spend the night and as I drove into the town I passed one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen.  Part of it was due to the summer sun that time of the day.  I was driving a Simca car that we had purchased in Alaska and it was very underpowered.  I wasn't sure it was going to make it through the mountains but it did.  It was not a comfortable car.  I was once on a business trip in Salt Lake City and did go to the Mormon Tabernacle and the genealogy library.

Joan, it sounds like you had a nice day yesterday.  Does your area get much humidity?  You are optimistic about not needing your winter clothes at this point.

Marilyne, I have never gotten into watching hockey.  I think it is probably because I don't understand the sport other than when a score is made.  I had a lady working for me in my last stint in Washington, DC, who was an ardent hockey fan and she and her sister had season tickets for the hockey game of the Washington Team and don't think they ever missed a game.  I am also not a fan of pro basketball but do enjoy football.  Your RV trip does sound like it was most enjoyable except for driving the RV with the car behind it.

DeAngel, it is hard not to like someone who you sense is being "real" and I always had that sense about Barbara Bush.

Sandy, like you I pretty much just have clothes although do have some short sleeved shirts I wear in the summer.  Otherwise it is the same clothes the year around.

Mary Ann

#8424
Larry, much of the Ford Museum displays are about Gerald Ford and his family, but they do have displays of other things too.  I have been there several times.  This last time, Tom had to push me in a wheelchair; he doesn't seem to mind and I get to see things I would not be able to see otherwise.  They change the displays periodically.

That's a shame about your cardiologist; I know you have liked her.  I hope you like the new cardiologist as it is hard to change doctors, especially when it is not your choice.

Larry, I have never been in Idaho.  On one trip, we left Yellowstone and were going out by way of Idaho, but changed our minds and went out by way of Montana.

Larry, I think hockey is like basketball on skates.  I don't care for basketball, but I do like to watch hockey.  I don't care about football, either, but was brought up on baseball, so I am able to follow that and know what's going on.  I picked up on golf because there was nothing else on TV and I've learned some of the finer points over the years.

My summer and winter clothes are much the same, but I do wear shorts in the summer.

It was 26 degrees when I woke up about 8 am and is now in the upper 30s.  I think we're to get into the high 40s, possible 50s, today.  Both radar and the Weather Channel show no precipitation for an entire week.  I can take that.  The snow is almost gone from our front yard; the pond side will take longer because it is in the shade most of the day.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Larry, I recall a few years ago we had one or two days with high humidity.  Normally we have no problem with it and I am glad.  I do not do well in high humidity.  Florida used to kill me when we would have to leave the bus to get onto the ship for a cruise.

I always have sweaters in the hall closet in case of a cold day. Always prepared.  :)

MarsGal

QuoteDo they still serve the little cheese biscuits?

You Betcha, Larry. Now if we could only get them to bring back garlic mashed potatoes.

Oh, and speaking of the cheese biscuits, we can buy Red Lobster's biscuit mix here. Can you? I haven't tried it, but my sister says it tastes exactly like those in the restaurant.

Marilyne

MarsGal - I love the cheese biscuits too, but have never seen the mix for sale?  Do you buy it in local markets, or from RL itself?

Sandy - like you, I dress in layers year round, so when the weather warms up, I start removing layers until I'm comfortable.  I do wear long pants year round, but in the summer they are light weight cotton, and in the winter, corduroy.  Shoes are my biggest problem now - trying to find some that are comfortable - either tie shoes in cold weather, or sandals when it's warm. Does anyone have any favorite brands to recommend?

FlaJean

We’ve traveled a lot but one of the best was in 2003 when we spent a week in Montana and crossed the Beartooth Pass and went to Yellowstone.  I’ve got photos of Old Faithful and that was so exciting.  I loved Yellowstone.  We spent the night there.  Then we spent a week in Banff Canada.  We traveled across Canada to British Columbia then down to Washington, visited Larry’s sister in Oregon and spent a week with our daughter in Santa Cruz CA.  We were gone about a month and had a great time but it was good to get home to Florida.

We lived in Zion, IL a year when my husband was attending classes and while there we did some sightseeing in Wisconsin but never did go into Chicago.   I’ve had driver’s licenses in Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Florida, Guam and an International license when we lived in Morocco.  When we retired (sort of) and moved to Florida I told my husband that was itâ€"no more driving tests and moving.  Well, we did move again here to the Florida Panhandle but at least I didn’t need another driver’s license. 😊

Jean, your 2003 trip to Montana looks interesting.  We spent some time in Yellowstone but I don't remember Beartooth Pass.  We also were in Glacier.  I also was in the northern part of Glacier on a tour - across Canada to Jasper Park, to Waterton Park, both in Canada, then to Glacier in the US (connected to Waterton).  This was a train trip put on by a local travel company.  I had never ridden in sleeping cars before that.  We went as far as Emerald Lake Park and Yoho Park in British Columbia.  I loved Glacier in Montana.  Dad and I stayed in Apgar Village in the park and I ate some sourish oranges and dark chocolate, not a good combination.  I was sick during the night and plastered the bathroom wall with orange and chocolate.  My poor dad cleaned it up.  It's funny now, but it wasn't then.  I liked driving on Going to the Sun highway and learning about the snow plows that cleared the snow in the spring, finding the road by-guess-or-by-gosh.  Some drivers found their way to the bottoms of the canyons and lost their lives.  We were at Logan Pass on July 4 and workers were still clearing snow from the road.

I get different scenes on my screen when I start up and one is of Montana and it is said that Montana is one of the largest states but has a low population.

It was on the tour that we stayed in the Glacier Hotel (forget the correct name) and I had my hair done in the hotel beauty parlor.  The stylist sprayed my hair with hair spray and I could not get a comb in my hair until I got home a week later.  All I really needed was a shampoo.

I have great memories of all of the trips I've taken, but I won't get started on those - or we'll never finish.  Jean, I will say I've had a driver's license only in Michigan.  It never was necessary to drive in Denmark, Germany, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Guatemala, always had drivers for those countries!  It's strange, but I often think I am not well travelled, but then I hear someone mention a country or state - and often I've been there.  Then there was a woman on one of my trips who mentioned a daughter living in Wisconsin.  Being I had relatives in Wisconsin, I asked where.  She replied "oh, a small town you've never heard of".  I told her I had relatives in the state, so she said "Whitewater".  My aunt went to Whitewater Normal and my mother started school there.

As for now - time to find something to eat.
