Joan - What's the next step for Candy?  Maybe she could get referred to another doctor?

Mary Ann - The thing I miss most in today's kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms, is color!  The preferred style now is very plain and bland - mostly grays and whites with the stainless appliances and wood floors. Maybe color will return some day?  I remember the days of aqua, yellow and other colors of kitchen appliances, as well as bright print curtains, and accessories.  Curtains, draperies, and wallpaper are rarely ever seen now.  I still have a yellow formica table in my kitchen,  as well as Fiesta style dishes and accessories.  I need all the cheerful color I can find!  ha ha

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I like color too.  I've often said that if someone shows me a product in color, I'd buy it!  I had copper appliances at my long-time home, also the next one.  I had bisque color appliances when I moved here, but since have gone to white.  Except I do have a stainless steel dishwasher and that is only because Lowe's had a sale and a white one was $50 more - same model.  I had a Kitchenaid before and this new one is a Frigidaire.  The difference in loading them is vast.  Dishes in the lower rack aren't so bad, but cups and plastics in the top rack - there is no specific place for them.  It has gotten so when we have a few things in the dishwasher, we wash!  I have only one window in the kitchen and I have a filet-type valance on that window.  I hate to admit my living room drapes are as old as the condo because I like them.  They're a strip, mostly blue.  I do have blue carpet and a blue print couch, a solid blue chair and another lighter blue chair.  You can tell i like blue.  I'd like to paint the living area, but Tom doesn't care so it doesn't get done.  The LR walls are light blue!

I wear mostly t-shirts year round and I have all sorts of colors.  I guess I am not a bland person.  (I hit the wrong color and will leave it.)

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, sounds like you live in a colorful house, as do I.  Sometimes I look at those houses shown on the HGTV channel on Fixer Upper or any of the house hunting shows, and they all look so bland and depressing.  Occasionally there will be a bright and cheerful one, but not often.  The gray and white look is the preferred style of today's homes.

This morning I saw that ship arriving in Duluth, that you mentioned in your early post.  It was about 8:15 here, and I clicked over to the Bridge cam, just in time to see it approach and pass under the bridge.  It was quite attractive, compared to most of the boats. I checked the schedule afterwards, but didn't see it listed, or what the cargo was?

wjoan

Not sure what will happen next.  She is off  to Calif. Friday morning to get some of her stuff out of  storage  That will give her some more clothes and 90 bucks a month more.  She will work on the Dr. proiblem when she returns.

MaryTX

Marilyne, I caught that ship this morning also.  It was pretty and colorful.

Its name was "Palabora" and it flies the Antigua and/or Barbuda flag.  It was listed under Other Designations and no cargo was mentioned.  They are islands between the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean.  Long way home!

I have had Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, Almond and one house had a Coppertone stove when we moved in.  Now I have just plain white and if  I ever buy any others they will be white also.  I don't like stainless steel.

Marilyne and Mary Ann. I guess I am colorful when I go out, I Belong to ReHats, so I wear a lot of purple and red or purple hat s

Years ago when I lived in Southampton, I had a very large kitchen 6 windows and a dutch door In winter I put up pink curtains, and in summer turquoise.I still hang curtains and drapes and change each season. I remember my mother washing curtains in Spring and fall.    I will never forget the curtain stretchers she had. and my bleeding fingers.

Mary Ann

I've always had some color in the house.  What I have now is mostly blue, but not loud.  To me, it is restful.  I also like natural wood.  I always had a colored car - mostly reds, but my last car was Royal Blue.  I could always find my car because of the color.  Tom has a silver car and so does everyone else.  I can't even find his car by the license plate because I don't know it; I do know it is a handicap plate but there are a lot of those too.

Joan, maybe Candy needs a vacation from her health problems, although I know she will take them with her, but she will have something else on her mind.  Good thoughts to her.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

MaryTX, I'm glad you remembered the name of the ship last night because I didn't.  It does not seem to be in port now, so probably left.

Kendrick doesn't seem mad at me, but I let him out at suppertime while I fixed something to eat.  Then I forgot him.  He just came in, thanks to Tom, and he's soaking wet!  It has rained a lot and we really don't have any shelter for him.  The patio might work because the deck boards are very close together, but there is one plant he likes to eat (I think it is quack grass - or crab grass?) and that is not in a protected area.  He won't let me get near him with a towel so he's going to stay wet.  If he wants to get on my bed, I'll shoo him off.  Poor boy!

MarsGal

Good wet morning to you all.

We've been getting some rain and showers, off and on, for the last three or four days. Now, today, we will see heavy rain remnants of Alberto. I don't think they are expecting the kind of devastation it caused south of us, but it is possible we will see some small stream and low area flooding.

I was hoping not to see any more rain until this afternoon so I could do a little weeding and yard cleanup, but it looks like we have drizzle at the moment. Oh, well.

I saw where they are trying to cut through some of the lave that has cooled to open some of the covered roads. I am surprised by the videos showing people walking around on top of the stuff here and there. It must cool relatively fast along the edges that are no longer advancing. There must not be much of a threat of breaking through on a thin crust of the stuff to hit a hollow or hot patch.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. We are headed to around 87 degrees this afternoon with only a less than 50% chance of rain throughout the day and evening.  Nothing planned for today other than to pick up my friend at the retirement home and we will go to coffee for about an hour.  I do need to get a loaf of bread at the Walmart near to where he lives and may try to do that before we go to coffee.

I did get in to see the lung doctor yesterday.  I didn't have to take the breathing test as I had the two previous years I have seen this doctor.  She did suggest that I get a 50 ft. tube and use the oxygen a couple of times a day and walk in our home.  I stopped at the medical supply store and they gave me the hose I needed but not the cannula piece that I would need to use it.  So I went back to the store before going to the Church for dinner and got hopefully what I need.  I will test it out today.  Fortunately, our home has a fairly long hallway that I can use for walking.  We are planning on having a repeat of the ribs, coleslaw and fresh sweet corn for our dinner this evening.  I have already set the table for the evening as I emptied the dish washer.  No sense in putting those items in the cabinets and then taking them out again.  I am waiting for Pat to get up and will likely then fix her breakfast.

Mary Ann, glad you will be taking your laptop with you tomorrow.  It will give you something to do if you have any idle hours while you are awhile and hopefully we can hear from you while you enjoy your visit in Indianapolis. Pat and I both like the color blue very much and had a shade of blue carpeting in the house we just lived in.  The only carpeting we have here is beige which builders seem to always want to use.

Mary, my wife has never wanted stainless steal appliances either as they tend to show fingerprints very easily.  We also have all white appliances now.

Marilyne, nice when someone is able to go on a vacation and come back not tired from all of the activity.  Glad Sandy had such an experience.  Sometimes I wish we had some old  time linoleum flooring in our kitchen rather than the wood. I looked at that website and it did bring back some memories.

Joan, that is good news for Candy although doesn't answer the question of why she is having such pain. Are there more tests scheduled?  I sure can't blame Candy for being frustrated.

deAngel, both my mother always washed the curtains in the Spring and Fall and did a complete house cleaning at those times.  We don't have a single curtain in this house, other than a shower curtain in the guest bathroom.  I have always liked curtains but I was not the one who had to care for them although usually got called upon to put them back up on the windows after they were washed.  Now we just use the faus wood white Venetian type blinds at all of our windows although Pat keeps talking about putting up curtains in our bedroom as the afternoon sun makes it too bright in the room for her to nap but that doesn't bother me.  My mother and grandmother also had those curtain stretchers.

MarsGal, I sure wouldn't want to walk on the lava until it was very cold and the volcano had stopped erupting.

Sandy

All is well her.   My AC will be put in the Window

Larry, she goes back to the Gyn. Dr on the 7th so guess she will know what is next then.  They sure do not move fast up here.

Marilyne

MaryTX - There is boat arriving this morning from The Netherlands.  I think it says 12:30 Duluth time, which would be 10:30 here in CA.  Not sure what time that would be in Texas?  When my daughter lived in Dallas for a year, I had a hard time remembering the time difference.

When we first moved here, avocado green ovens and dishwasher were already here, and in pretty bad shape.  We replaced them fairly soon with the almond color. Lighter colors look best in this kitchen, because it's quite dark.  There is a deck overhang outside the window, and the sliding glass door faces North, so it is kinda gloomy in there.  I only have a curtain valance on the window.  The door has the same valance, plus vertical blinds, which I have open all the time.  The rest of the house, except for one bathroom, is flooded with sunlight most of the day.

Mary Ann - Poor Kendrick!  I guess he won't be wanting to go outside any time soon.  How long did it take him to dry?  He's going to miss you so much, while  you're in Indiana.  Maybe Annie could come over to visit him while you're gone?

Larry - hardwood floors in the kitchen wouldn't be good for me at all.  As I've grown old, I can't seems get a good grip on anything anymore.  I have a lot of spills while preparing food, as thing slip right through my fingers!  Extremely annoying, and makes for a lot of floor clean-ups, and weekly moppings.  Also, we tend to "spray" water droplets on the floor when we're at the sink.  No big deal if you have vinyl flooring, but not good for hardwood.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, Kendrick is going to have to rely on Tom while I'm gone, and that will only be for four days (parts of the first and fourth), because Annie will be in Omena MI as the main attendant at her mother's wedding Saturday.  He'll get along but I know he'll wander through the house, wondering where I am.  He might even sleep on my bed.  And by the time he gets used to my absence, I'll return.

Kendrick has thick hair and did not dry right away.  He did not like it when I tried to dry him with a towel and I let him alone.  Fortunately, he did not try to sleep on my bed and I doubt he'd sleep with Tom.

I think the name of the ship going out soon is the Reggeborg.  Have  you ever looked at the info about the ships to find when they were built?  Some of them are quite old so no wonder they look bad.

Marilyne, I like neutral colors with splashes of color in the furniture, lamps, etc.  we have bay windows in three of our rooms so I had to put up thin sheers to tone down some of the light which hurts my eyes.  I wanted to keep window covering very simple (for my husband’s sake) so I got draperies that we can just pull across the windows at night.  Larry still does a lot of household maintenance and he sometimes forgets that he isn’t as young as he used to be.😋  I also love my stainless steel fridge and range.  The dishwasher is white and we will replace it when it’s necessary so it will match the rest of the kitchen.

Mary Ann, we also have a lot of blue in our living room.  Blue is a favorite with me. The master bedroom was painted a light green when we moved in and it looks nice with our maple bedroom furniture.  Everything was newly painted before we bought the house so we have no intention of repainting any time soon.

Larry, This house was “flipped” by a builder and heaven only knows why they put in wood floors in the kitchen, and a lousy installation at that.  We are still thinking about installing ceramic flooring in the kitchen but haven’t seen any we like.  The kitchen is fairly small so in the meantime I got a couple non-slip rugs in front of the sink and my work area.

The forum today sounds like HGTV ðŸ˜,.

Mary Ann

Jean, it does sounds like HGTV in here today, doesn't it?  I'd like to paint here and Tom says he knows someone who could do it, but Tom is a procrastinator and I don't know when or if it will ever happen.  So many people around here can do it themselves.  I think Tom could if he put his mind to it, but if he doesn't want to do something, he either ignores it or does a bad job.  I'll take "ignore" over "bad job".  Tom is so good to me in so many ways that I ignore some things.  Of course, I am good to him too!

It isn't as warm here today as yesterday, but it still is warm - 82 degrees.  It might rain while I am gone and it is to rain the afternoon I return.  I'd just as soon it did not rain in Indy Saturday or Sunday.  I am sure Sunday we will have a cookout at Tom's brother's house - he is the father of the quads and an older girl.

I watched a couple boats go out in the Duluth area and now I have to work on packing.  I put some things in my suitcase, do something else (like now), then go back to packing.  With being gone four days, I don't have to take as much as in other years.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I finally saw the ship, Reggeborg, from The Netherlands.  It was a beautiful boat, and looked like it had been painted recently.  Now I can't remember what the cargo was?

Our entire house also needs painting, inside and out - but I don't see it happening anytime in the near future.  AJ is good about keeping up basic yard work, and keeping the cars in good running order, but when it comes to upgrading/improving the interior of the house, he doesn't want to do it, and won't agree to hire anyone.  So things are quickly becoming overwhelming in this old relic - built in 1961.

Jean - I think the reason the people who "flipped" your house put a hardwood floor in the kitchen, is because that seems to be what everyone wants.  Apparently most people who are thinking about buying or remodeling, watch the shows on HGTV, and then follow their lead.  Hardwood floors throughout are a necessity, but some kitchens do have interesting pavers or large tiles that look very nice.  You rarely see vinyl, (what we used to call linoleum), floors in the kitchens or bathrooms on any of those shows.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, it is possible the Reggeborg had no cargo and was empty.

Your house isn't old - I grew up in a house built in 1927 and we moved in 1928.  I left in 1978, 50 years later.  The next house I lived in was built in 1955 and even this condo was built in 1981.  I agree that houses do need upgrades regardless of age.  I miss my dad because he knew how to do almost everything and I learned a lot from him.  However, there are limits, and I'm older than he was when he did so much.

I've been packing, then sitting down when my back aches.  Fortunately, I don't have to worry about driving, which I did for many years.  I quit driving to Indps after my last trip in 2008.  I flew for a few years but when Tom moved in with me, he offered to take me half way if the other Tom would come up from Indps.  That is the way we do it now and it works out OK for all.

Mary Ann

Joy

Mary Ann,  hope you will have a safe trip to  Indianapolis.  I know it will be a quick trip, but I know you will have a busy time with your friends there.  Have a wonderful visit !

Hi Everyone.  We have a sunny morning today and are headed into the low 90's before the day is over.  Today is the day for the housekeeper and we plan to go pick up Pat's new shoes, that have finally come in, and then get our main meal out.  Yesterday the yard folks were finally able to mow and trim the yards and they now look very nice whereas they had been looking pretty shabby. Nothing else on the schedule for today and I am glad.

Sandy, it sounds like you are having some very pleasant weather.  You will be all set for summer when you get the AC put in.

Joan, we have many doctors in this area but they all seem to be booked up for weeks and sometimes months in advance.  When will Candy get back from California?  Is she renting a U-Haul to get her things back to your place in your building?

Marilyne, Pat has always had a bit of a problem holding on to things and now with her back getting something on the floor that requires it be gotten up quickly is a problem for her.  She does keep a mop handy in the pantry to spills and we have a very light weight dust pan and small broom that also works along with the grabber.  As I have previously mentioned our ice maker always wants to send out another cube after you remove the glass and often it will slide a long way on the wood floor.

Mary Ann, cats seem to be pretty self-sufficient as long as they have food and a water source.  They probably spend most of their time asleep when we humans are away.  It sounds like you don't have expectations regarding what Tom will be doing and that is a good thing as expectations often create resentments and that is not helpful to any of us.  I know today is the day for your trip.  Have a great time.

Good morning Joy.  Hope you and all who visit here will have a most enjoyable day.

Jean, I have always liked sheers with drapes over the windows.  I am used to our rooms now without curtains but have to admit they look a bit stark.  Like you I have no intention of repainting inside my house.  The next tenants can do that if they want it repainted. Pat doesn't lift her feet and is afraid of falling on a rug. I like to watch some of the programs on HGTV and am often shocked at the prices some of these small home bring.

Mary Ann

I'm showered and my hair is washed.  I usually do that on Saturday but tomorrow I will be in Indy.  I have showered many times at Tom's but he does not have a grab bar on his tub and I find I rely on mine more and more.  Beside the one on the tub, I have one on the wall that Terry put up a couple years ago or more.  Tom H has ceramic tile around the tub and the suction cup bars don't hold because of the cracks between the tiles.

It has cooled down a bit but it still is warm - 70 right now at 9:10 am.

I'll send a message from Indy, but it could be tomorrow before it gets sent.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Larry, she is renting a car to drive down to Santa Cruz.  Tis all the stuff she carried in her car when she was down there.  They would not allow her to bring it all up with her on the train so she had to put it in storage.  The storage in NV will take a truck tho.

Marilyne

Joan - Where did Candy live when she was in NV??  She was most likely in either Reno or LV?  I have lots of relatives in the smaller towns throughout the state.  Hope to visit there this summer.

Mary Ann - you probably won't check into S&F until much later today, but just want you to know that I'm thinking about you and hoping you had a smooth trip to Indianapolis, and that you'll have a fun vacation. We'll all we looking forward to hearing from you.

Our electric power went out some time during the night, so I woke up this morning with no lights, no fridge, no computer, no TV, and most important . . . no Mr. Coffee!  About an hour ago, (8:30) we finally couldn't stand it any longer, so went down to 7-11 for coffee, and when we got home, the power was back on!

FlaJean

Mary Ann, hope you have a good, safe trip and enjoy yourself.

We had a little rain shower this morning and probably will have another before the day is over.

Marilyne, not very pleasant to wake up to no power, especially no Mr. Coffee.

Larry, we all need days that are just quiet.

wjoan

Marilyne, she was living with her niece in Gardnerville.

Mary Ann

We had a good trip down - both legs.  Traffic on I-196 was scattered, but when we got on I-94 and I-65, it was heavier.  Tom H got to Merrillville about fve minutes after we did.  We ate, then switched my things from car to car and we went our separate ways.  Weather was good most of the way and we had some rain about half way between Merrillville and Indps, but nothing heavy.  Tom H and I let it all hang out until about 6:30 when we left for a restaurant where Jim and I used to go and they know me.  So we surprised them.  Bob and his wife and daughter were there and we had a good visit.  Tomorrow we're going to Jim's old neighborhood (where his granddaughter now lives) where they are going to have garage sales.  Sunday I think everyone will end up here for a cookout.  There might be 12 of us Sunday, then Monday we repeat today but in reverse.

Tom H had a friend move here from Omaha so he has gone to see her for a while.  I may or may not go to bed first.

I forgot my coffee so I'll go without.  I am not a coffee fiend and neither is Tom H; I don't mind not having any.

Tom's cat and I have already made friends.  Usually she has avoided me.  She's about 16 years old.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Good to hear that your car exchange with the two Tom's, turned out exactly as planned. :) Sounds like you have a busy weekend ahead of you.  I love garage sales, and cookouts, so I'll be looking forward to hearing all about both events.  I'm glad you have Tom's cat to keep you company. Poor Kendrick is probably lonely, and would be jealous, if he knew you have a a new feline friend! ha ha
Hope to see a message from you tomorrow.

Adding to the house discussion, my hopes for getting the kitchen windows and two exterior doors replaced the year are fading. On Monday the plumber is coming to try and unplug the basement drain because it is backing up. The kitchen sink also drains into that pipe. So far, the bathroom and basement toilet are okay. On Tuesday, I have an electrician coming to check and either replace or upgrade my wired fire detector system.

It has been very muggy for at least a week now. When I checked the weather around 5am this morning it was 73o still, although they are predicting it get only to 78o today. After the predicted storms (yes, more rain) tomorrow, it is supposed to be only in the 60s.

I've been digging into old electronics and sorting them into piles and boxes, the Computer Ministry (local non-profit that fixes and offers the computers and accessories to non-profits in need), stuff I can put out in the trash, and for recycle. I will have to hire a local trash hauler to take the stuff, like the two standard TVs sitting here taking up space, to the recycle center. I can't handle the heavy TVs, and the county recycle center is not not close, plus the expressway I would have to take is a huge accident magnet on the stretch I'd have to travel.

Shan has discovered the joy of napping on my lap. That means my lap is even less empty now with all three wanting it to themselves. I sit down, instant lap rug.  :cat:

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We are suppose to only get to 89 degrees today.  Once again we had showers last evening from some pop-up storms.  Our county was under a severe thunderstorm warning but we only got some moderate winds and then the rain.  Our neighborhood is having a garage sale today and our neighbors across the street are participating as they just put their house on the market a couple of days ago.  There have already been a good number of folks stopping to check the garage sale items out.  We did not accomplish what we had planned yesterday but put it off until today as Pat just wasn't up to going out.  So hopefully today we will get some strawberries and pick up her new shoes and also have our main meal out.  I may go to my meeting this morning but haven't decided for sure.

Mary Ann, glad you had a nice trip to Indy and sure you will enjoy being with Tom's and with his family.  We do have a grab bar in our shower and both Pat and I make good use of it.  Glad that Tom's cat is friendly with you this time but Kendrick may object when you get home that you gave attention to another cat.

Joan, sure hope Candy has nice driving weather and with the rental car shouldn't experience any car problems.

Marilyne, I would never miss coffee but my wife sure would as that is a must first thing when she gets to her easy chair to use the ice on her back.  Anymore we feel lost when we lose power.  It has been a long time since I have been to a garage sale and don't expect to ever go to one again.

MarsGal, it sounds like you will be keeping your checkbook busy the first of next week.  Both plumbers and electricians are pretty expensive as you know.  It sounds like you are soggy up your way as we are here.  However, the soil we have dries out pretty quickly.  All of our rivers and lakes around here are full.  I wish we had a computer ministry here.  I did get rid of a lot of old electronics when we moved here but they are beginning to accumulate again but don't have too much.

Jean, I agree that quiet days are a gift.
