Marilyne, younger years in  North Beach near Fisherman's Wharf.  iN HIGH sCHOOL MY DAD BOUGHT A SET OF FLATS IN THE rICHMOND District.  Lived on 20th Ave. near Fulton..  Lived there til I got married.

Sorry for caps but not gonna go back and correct them all.  Sorry.

i do not remember Jerry Vale, but do remember some of those songs the site says he sang.

I got a kick out of the Beatles when my children were so crazy about them.  Now I enjoy their talent in a nostalgic way, but not as much as my own music.  I always realized Elvis was extremely gifted in the vocal chords department, but I neither liked nor approved of him.  Yes, he was definitely the wrong side of the tracks as far as I was concerned.

I bought a new computer, totally picked out by Chip, on March 13th, and Chip has been taking his own sweet time getting it loaded and ready to go ever since.  This afternoon I am using it for the very first time.  I like the new keyboard and the arrangements.  The type is too small in many places, and I have to find out how to fix that.  My virus detective software warned me not to come in here!  First time THAT has ever happened!  I told it to ignore whatever was frightening it.  So here I am, in a Hello Windows 10 mode, and wondering how much I have lost and how much gained.  We shall see!

Sandy

I absolutely adored Jerry Vale ....
IMHO,  he had a beautiful voice....

Thanks for reminding me!

wjoan - you must have gone to the same high school as my friend/college roommate.  She graduated in the same class as Johnny Mathis . . . it must have been 1953, or maybe 52?  I don't remember the name of the school?  I remember her saying that he sang at a lot of school events and assemblies.

I never lived in SF,  but have spent a lot of time there over the years. I have a granddaughter who lives in the Sunset, so when I go now, I always go there.  I used to love North Beach!

Marilyne, I graduated in 1951.  The name of the school is Washington High School.  :)

Hi WesternJoan
How goes your day.

Thanks, Patricia.  I don't remember the song I particularly liked to hear Jerry Vale sing, but I liked his voice - so clear and you could understand each word.

Kelly, day went slow.  Lost my connection for about 5 hours.  Other than that all is well.

Hi everyone.  It looks like we will have a nice morning but have the possibility for more rain this afternoon and evening.  Yesterday we had close to two inches of rain and each time it really rained heavily with some wind.  Our main activities for today will be to take Pat for a chest x-ray at the hospital and then over to get a new hose for her CPAP machine.  Three nights ago it started making a popping sound as if it were a popcorn popper with each breath she took.  We exchanged the hoses between our two identical machine and I got that popping sounds so we are sure it is the hose failing.  Perhaps we will have a good lunch out and Pat will have the evening off from preparing a meal.

Kelly, our summers are hot and we have already had a day or two in the 90's this spring.

MaryPage, I also remember "Your Hit Parade" on radio and TV.   I always liked the show and how they worked up to the number one song of the week.  That show was on from 1935 on radio  until it ended in 1959 on TV.  I feel fortunate that I grew up in more or less an age of innocence.  I really feel for the young people of today.

Joy, the Goodwill and Salvation Army quit accepting vinyl records where we were living.  I had a fair collection and converted them to digital and finally just put them in the garbage.

Jeanne, I agree with you on songs being sung and not screeched and the words repeated over and over with blaring music.

Hal, I didn't even hook up my DVD player when we moved as we seldom used it as we don't rent movies and if we did it would be streaming and not on DVD.  I so wish they would bring back an old type variety show but suppose it wouldn't be a commercial success.  I loved the old radio shows.

Jeanne, apparently some young people are finding the old songs and styles of music very enjoyable.

Great discussions yesterday.  You most likely can find about any artist in the eras we have been discussion on a website called Spotify.  Just put the name in the search box and then select the artist option and you likely will see a long list of their music.

halkel

Larry, I think the closest thing to variety show anymore is "The Voice".  My wife watches it, I don't.  They have a bunch of so called judges, celebrities,  that make their comments, much like that dance show, my wife watches, which in my opinion ruins the show.  It seems to me they have to "attempt" to show their brilliance and how astute they are (aren't).  Oh, never mind.  Just say I am not impressed with their opinions.

Good morning from a damp, still rainy morning in the Interior!

I remember watching the Dean Martin variety show, remember the Golddiggers? Also the Carol Burnett show which was comedic genius. We also saw several memorable shows such as Sinatra and Como's Christmas productions. We had Lucile Ball's shows in several reincarnations but I never thought she was funny, just another variety show.

There were probably others that I've forgotten. We didn't have a television until after the 1967 flood so I don't remember all those children shows people still speak of such as the Art Linkletter show although I have seen saved portions of it when I had a TV. I think growing up without one is why I don't have one today.

MaryTX

Patricia, do you have cable TV?  There is a channel on cable called "Me TV".  It has a lot of the old shows from the 50s, 60s and 70s.  Carol Burnett is one, also Mama's Family with Carol Lawrence.

TVLand, when it first came out in the early 90s carried some of the old shows, but now they consider "old"  being the early 2000s :)

We got our first TV in 1957, a 17" console.  It was the first one in the neighborhood and every afternoon after school, all the neighborhood kids (about 20) were sitting in our living room watching all the afternoon kid's shows like Howdy Dooty.  I was in high school and I had to babysit all these kids for free.  About a year later, the neighbors got a 21" and everyone went over there!

My folks and aunt and uncle were glued to the TV on Saturday nights for Lawrence Welk and Liberace :).

I remember Liberace well!

No I do not have a television. I did for awhile, almost as a standard issue wherever I moved to. But then in 1997, I heard a newly wedded couple in my apartment complex, bemoaning the fact that they couldn't afford a television. First I thought that was odd as they WERE newly married and two, it got me to thinking. I had a nice 21" or thereabouts television but I couldn't remember watching it in some time.

I went and looked and it was very dusty. I called them over and gave them the TV and they were so shocked that I was doing so and wasn't planning a new purchase. I always wondered if they stayed married as they were so appreciative and I've also never missed it. This may be because we never had a television until I was fifteen.

I can watch several free shows on my computer but don't really. YouTube has many, many shows on for free as well. I have also had those free versions of Hulu and Netflix to see if I wanted to spend the monthly fee. I usually never watched anything but perhaps a late night show and quit mostly after one or two days.

I am an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction and spend time or did studying PSP, photography and Sarah.

I have been busy, busy yesterday and today working with my new computer.  Plus Greg picked me up at nine-thirty this morning and I went to Chestertown with him and worked in the office.  So I am pretty exhausted and way behind with things, but wanted to ask you new computer folks if you have had any experience with completely losing all of your emails.  I had a bunch in incoming and in sent and in the deleted portion, but all of a sudden they all disappeared and won't come back!  I am going berserk here!  Where in the WORLD would they have gone to?  Anyone got a clue?

There might be, Joan, but I've never been there, and if I went, well, what they told me would probably be Greek to me.  But no matter; Chip took pity on me and fixed EVERYthing.  I tell you true, you have to be born to this stuff to really dig it.  I mean, seriously, my 3 year old great grandson is waaaaay smarter with these machines than I.  Blows my mind!

Kelly

Hi Everyone

Good morning from the Isle of Man

Kelly

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  Last night turned out to be a very long one as I woke up about 1:30 and didn't find sleep again until after 5 and then just off and on.  Around 3:30 I picked up my phone and read my email and then the postings in the discussions I follow.  Nothing was bothering me and it guess it was just one of those nights.  We had some more heavy rain yesterday but now expect some sunny and warm days for the next several days.

We had a four hour outing yesterday in getting the x-ray for Pat at the hospital, stopping at the CPAP supplier, going to Jo-Ann's and finally stopping at Big Daddy's Bar-B-Q for a late lunch and early dinner.  While it was good we decided we like the Bar-B-Q place we have been going to nearby better and likely will not make a return visit.  My heart was bothering me yesterday and last evening when I went to take my evening medicine I discovered I hadn't taken my morning dosage, which undoubtedly had brought on the pain I was feeling yesterday.  Today's schedule should be light.  We will go to the Church for the Wednesday night dinner and spend time with Scott this evening.  I do need to refill my medicine boxes and fix up some of my frozen fruit treat with the mixed fruit and bananas I have in the freezer.

Patricia, your mention of those old TV shows sure brings back memories.  We got TV at our house when I was probably 17.  I remember you had to constantly be adjusting the vertical and horizontal settings and actually getting up to change the channels, which wasn't much of a job since there were only two or three channels we could get. Right before Pat and I moved to Anchorage in 1968 we had purchased our first color TV only to find when we got to Alaska they were not broadcasting anything in color.  However, shortly after we moved there they started broadcasting in color using usually a week delayed tape for the lower 48.  I also remember that punctuality as to when programs started wasn't a big factor since the stations didn't have to adhere to anyone else's schedule.  Nice of you to give your TV to someone who was going to enjoy it since it was not something you cared to use.

MaryPage, glad Chip was able to get you going with your email.

MaryPage

We got our first TV in November 1951.  I was 22½!  We marveled at it, and used to sit and watch the screen for it to finally break into a show of some kind.  It did not run around the clock.  Mostly, when it did come on, it was really bad old cowboy movies: black and whites that flickered badly.  But mostly it was just that round signal.
Oh, how we loved, was it called Your Show of Shows?  Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca.  No one, to this day, has been funnier, IMHO.

Thanks Larry. Well its another usual now day for us in the Interior. Although it did rain all day yesterday, steady but no excitement. It was similar in 2003 and now many folks are bemoaning the assumption that it will be cool as their year was as well.

I'm to meet a new cat this afternoon. When I received Sarah from Pet Pride, they kept her sequestered as she attacked the other animals in the foster home and growled at everyone, frankly they were a bit afraid of her. If you think about it, taking a cat from a dangerous winter climate, amputating her tail and then placing her among other animals and cats may not have been a bright move without giving her a breathing space first. When she came to me, she relaxed and became quiet and loving and so very intelligent and endearing.

Now I've learned they have another small gray female found outdoors in the woods and hissing and growling at the animals, people and evidently a three year old in the foster home. They're keeping her in a bathroom I understand. Some wanted to call me and the directer wanted to wait until I eventually called them but the cat who they've named Lucy wasn't calming down. So they called me and asked if I'd mind and as with Sarah, they waived all fees and paid for vet visit, Advantage,  and micro chipping. Of course, even with the deja vu, I said yes. A friend now is calling me the "cat whisper."  ::) However, its just quiet here, no others, just me and I don't fuss which is what Sarah needed and probably this one as well.

MaryPage, you do write well and I envy your turn of phase! The first television show we watched on our own was the "Big Valley" starring Barbara Stanwyck, Linda Evans, Richard Long and Peter Breck. Also starring Lee Majors in a breakout role.

We started our Sunday evening ever after with Disney, Combat with Vic Morrow and then the Big Valley. As a 15 year old, I was buzzing with all that testosterone!  :smitten:

Now for all you travellers, you will like this idea, I do. I hope all the airlines adopt the idea.  Valet service for luggage.

MaryPage, ditto on Sid.  He and Imogene were absolutely brilliant comedians.

Hal, I heard about another "perk" on the news recently for air travelers - radio controlled luggage tags.  Using a smartphone, you can always know where your luggage is.  And when your luggage is on the belt being loaded onto the plane, if it's going onto the wrong plane, the belt will beep. This would be great if all airlines did this.

We have had our luggage lost several times.  The worst time was when Claude's brother passed away in Oklahoma and we were living on the west coast.  He packed his suit in his luggage and wore slacks and a sport shirt on the plane.  His luggage didn't arrive with him.  The plane was late and time was short.  No one wore his size, so he attended the funeral on what he had on.  Three weeks later, our sister-in-law got a phone call from a convenience store/Greyhound bus stop out on the highway.  The airline had sent his luggage there without letting anyone know.

Hal and Mary I agree with both ideas. I read a short piece yesterday on AOL about travelers more likely to have "road rage"  incidents when having to struggle through first class roomy sections on their way to crowded economy class! And the aircraft carriers are taking note.

halkel

Angel those folks in first class pay through the nose for that room.  I "considered" one time flying to England first class until I got the price.........yikes!
