Sandy, I enjoy looking in on the eagles but I don't watch them as much as I look for boats to enter or leave the canal in Duluth (I also look at the other locations).  The Duluth canal has sound which makes it more interesting when those loud horns blast out.

At 7:30 am when I rolled out of bed, my outdoor thermometer read 80 degrees so I think we are due for a scorcher today.  Later, the temperature went down so I think I looked at the temperature while the early morning sun was still shining on the thermometer which is on the north side of our building.  At 12:30 noon, our temp is 85 degrees and we still are headed for warm temps.

I discovered James in Holland is a "golf nut" so I was able to watch the ending of the match yesterday at his home.  I was glad to see Koepka win a second time.  It is good the winners switch around occasionally.  Dustin Johnson gets a lot of publicity and he is a #1 golfer, but there are a lot of young ones coming up.  That is why I have no favorite - I like them all.

As I've mentioned, my dad was a manual training (printing presses) teacher and he taught during the depression.  For many years he was paid September through June, so there were two month with no pay.  My folks did try to arrange their finances to have money in July and August, but Dad didn't always get paid money during the school year, he also was paid in scrip by the City (as a teacher, he was a City employee as the schools were "public" and under the City) and every store did not take scrip (Dad was more conservative than Mother).  Sometimes Dad would take a job in the summer with one or two printing companies and he always saved a couple of weeks when we would drive to Illinois to visit Mother's sisters.  About every three or four years we'd drive to Minnesota to visit Dad's brother and family.  We never went without food in all those years and I remember my folks winning some groceries which they would give to a neighbor family where the father had lost his job.  While we had two neighbor women who had jobs outside the home, it was a time when few women worked outside the home.  Three neighbor women drove cars, but most did not - my mother did not.  Most of our neighbors did not have phones; I can think of only two.  We lived in the City on a street that was unimproved when we moved there, later was completed one lot beyond our property.  Such was life in the "big" city!

Good morning to everyone looking in. :)  We had wonderful day yesterday.  Our son and dil called early, and said they had decided to spend Father's Day at home, and wanted us all the come over for dinner.  We did, and it was lots of fun and lots of food.  Jackie, our dil, is an excellent cook, and enjoys having big parties and lots of people around.  Besides the five of us, some of her family were there, as well as our two grandkids and their bf's and gf's.  So it was a large gathering.  Our son cooked salmon on their outdoor gas barbecue, and lots of other delicious food.

Shelley and Claire left for home this morning.  Sorry to see them go, but they will be back in September.  So it's back to "the quiet life" for AJ and me. He has lots of appointments this week, and PT.  I just need to rest my voice for a few days.  My vocal cords are in bad shape, after three days of non-stop talking.

Mary Ann - Looks like you had a good Father's Day, with the twins, and the rest of the family.  That was very nice of you to pay for the meal for everyone. I know they all appreciate that you are so generous.

Sandy - I'd also like to watch the webcam for the Decorah Eagles. I'm sure you've posted the link in the past, but I'd appreciate it if you would post it again.  Sounds like your weather, as well as everyone else's in here, is far better than ours in California.  We have had the worst and longest run of June Gloom, that I can remember in a long time.   The wind blew for four straight days over the weekend, bringing very chilly temps off the cold Pacific Ocean.  Overcast, cloudy, windy, cold - with temps only going into the low 60's around here, and 50's in San Francisco.  This morning it's still cool, but the wind has finally died down, so I think we'll go into the 70's today and then 80's and 90's predicted for later in the week.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I'm glad you had such an enjoyable Father's Day.  I really enjoy it when many people are there for a special day.  And we did have such a nice day with the girls.  I wondered to Tom whether the girls are so good because they have each other for company.

One thermometer reads 90 degrees and I'm too lazy to get up to read the other.  I will say I'm very comfortable and I'm going to finish a sandwich I made yesterday for lunch.  Tom said he'd be home for supper so we'll eat more at that time.  Then I'll see about napping.

Just got home a little while ago, it is hot suppose to make 90

I took two friends to Applebee's to day as they do so much for me. We all decided we like Friendlies better, We cannot wait for IHop B     to open. Was suppose to be open the first of May.  We do not have to much to chose from out here.

I'd better say something before I shut down for the night.  I haven't done anything of note and Tom was gone most of the day.  I am not sure we got to the mid-90s but I think we did reach the high 80s or maybe 90 degrees.  I do know I forgot to check the mail, but as Tom said when he came home tonight "it'll still be there tomorrow".

I'll try to do better tomorrow.

Hi Everyone.  We are headed to 98 degrees with high humidity this afternoon.  I am meeting a friend for lunch around 11:30 this morning and beyond that plan to stay home and in where it is cool the rest of the day.  I just fixed Pat's breakfast and have the other kitchen work done for this morning.

Sandy, hope you are staying nice and cool during the hot days you are having.  I looked at the eagles web cam yesterday afternoon and there was only one of the three sitting on the limb.  I didn't know what you shared about the growth of the eagles.  Glad you are happy with your living arrangements now.  Time does cause us to make changes in the way we live our lives and spend our time.  Like you I just try to live life one day at a time and not to worry about tomorrow.

Mary Ann, I expect with those twins and the expense of getting started on the family life that James in Holland doesn't have the time or probably the extra resources to play much golf.  All of my work life I had been paid every two weeks but when I retired the income is only once a month and that took some getting used to.  My mother drove the car but my grandmothers never did. Like you I haven't checked my mailbox in the late afternoon as usual because it has been so hot.  I had a couple of small packages that the mailman brought to the door yesterday afternoon and when I checked the box this morning it was empty.  Unusual not to get at least one catalog to throw away.

Marilyne, how nice that your son and dil invited you to come and have the Father's Day dinner at their house.  It give you and your daughters extra time to talk and not be in the kitchen.  I bet that salmon was delicious.  We no longer have a grill as where we would have to keep it in the back gets the hot afternoon sun and it iwouldn't be convenient to get things out to it and back in the house.  It sounds like AJ will enjoys some nice quiet if you are resting your vocal cords.  :)

deAngel, we used to go to Applebee's a lot.  I am sure there is one over in Augusta somewhere but we haven't gone there since we moved.  We always got good food there and would often go after Church on Sunday with our lunch group.

Mary Ann

Larry, I'm not sure James has ever played golf, but just got interested in it - like me.  He has recently taken a job doing something at a golf course and I don't know what.  I think it is in some management area.  I was glad the game was something we could share Sunday.  It wasn't the weather that kept me from getting the mail yesterday, I just plain forgot.  One of us will get it this morning, I am sure.  We have an Applebee's near here and we sometimes go there.  I like their food, but if we go in the evening (seldom), it is noisy.  Noontime can be noisy too.

At 10 am it is 70 degrees and will get into the 80s - not bad.  I think we will get some rain, maybe even a storm.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Good morning everyone. Still overcast here, with heavy fog, (at 7:15), but the wind is gone. I think the sun will come out later, and it will be a nice day.  AJ has two doctor appointments this morning, and then PT, so he'll be gone most of the day.  I'm planning to do some housework, and later go to the store for groceries.  After having family here for the weekend, the cupboard and the fridge are mostly empty.  I'll return later this afternoon.

Mary Ann- Applebee's closed here, a couple of years ago.  The food was okay, but the restaurant was laid out in such a way, that it was extremely noisy. I only went once, and never again.  I felt very uncomfortable there.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I looked at the Duluth cams today, but never saw any boats, or anything else happening.  I'm enjoying checking out the Decorah Eagle site, and also Grand Haven.  It won't be long, until we'll be able to watch the Brooks Falls Bear cam.

It's been a quiet day here, and I did go to the store for a few items, but never did get any housework done.  There's always tomorrow! ::)

Not much activity in this folder today? I hope we hear from others, before the day is completely over.

Mary Ann

Kendrick just came in for a back scratch and Tom came home from what was to be a concert by the Rockford Dam, but I think the weather was kind of iffy and everyone was moved inside a grill and it was too crowded for Tom and a few friends, so they went out and sat by the dam and I think it did not rain so they had an enjoyable time talking.  Tom said he doesn't go for the music but to see his friends.

I watched for a couple of boats to go through Superior but they didn't so I gave up and did other computing.  I watched my two TV programs, then fixed my supper and went to see if the two boats had made it to the docks.  Fortunately, they both were heading for the Superior gap and I watched both as they went through.  The first one was Zeus, a tug, and coming toward the lighthouses, it looked like an island with a lighthouse on it.  The other one was an ore boat.  I think they're done for the night.  At least before I go to bed.  So often I'll see that many ships are to go out "tomorrow" and when I look at the schedule, they've already left - in the middle of the night.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Mary Ann and other boat watchers,  just saw my first boat leaving the harbor.  From Canada Steamship Co.  Caught it first on Bridge Cam - then switched to Canal Cam and watched it go "out to sea".
Love it!

Mary Ann

Thanks, Callie, it's fun, isn't it, to watch those large boats go out (or come in) and I like to hear the horns blast too.

In the blue line above the cam shot is "Boat Schedule".  If you don't have that saved, do so, and you will see when the boats are scheduled to go out for a few days.  Only Duluth and Superior have cams that show the boats up close and there is sound only at Duluth.

Hi Everyone on this already hot morning and a day headed to a heat index of 105 degrees this afternoon and still a day to go before summer officially begins. Nothing particular on the schedule for today until this evening when Scott will be coming out to spend a few hours with us.  Pat is fixing ribs in the Instant Pot and will fix some of her delicious baked beans to go with some macaroni salad and perhaps a lettuce salad if anyone wants one. We have some ice cream bars in the freezer for dessert so it shouldn't be a hard meal to prepare for this evening.

Mary Ann, I guess working at a golf course like James has done would probably spur an interest in the game.  I bet there are some really beautiful golf courses up your way.  I hope he likes the work.  I agree Applebee's can get pretty loud during a rush hour time.  The group we used to eat out with a lot would try to go early if we went out in the evening to avoid the noise as several of them had very bad hearing and it was a trial for them.  Also one of the men was losing his eyesight and, if I recall correctly, in the evenings it wasn't very well lit.  Our after Church lunch group often went to this one Chinese Restaurant because it was well lit and the noise level was acceptable even when they were pretty busy. It sounds like Tom goes out to places for the same reason I go to coffee and that is to spend some time with friends.

Marilyne, sure hope AJ's doctor's appointments went well yesterday.  Having extras in the home to feed does do a number on the pantry and refrigerator but it is worth it with the joy the company brings us. I see you made it grocery shopping yesterday. If I recall the Applebee's we used to go to was laid out where you had ramps and some steps to deal with to get to the main dining area.

Callie, so far when I have looked at the cams I haven't seen any boats either coming or going but will only spend a few minutes looking at them.  I did see on the website that they have some cam videos in an archive and did watch a couple of those.  I just looked at the eagle cam and see only two of the birds on the tree branch.

wjoan

Forecast is for 95 degrees today.

CallieOK

Mary Ann,  I do check the Boat Schedules but then I forget to check at the right time!  :crazy2:
Is the time shown Central or Eastern?

The eagle and other cams tell me my browser won't support the program they use.  I'm leery of adding programs I'll only use once in a while.  Guess I'll miss out on those.   :'(

Mary Ann

Callie, Duluth is in the Central Time Zone.  I have to add an hour to what the schedule shows.  I think you're in the Central Zone, or are you on Mountain Time?  If you're in the Central Zone, you're all set.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Joan - I haven't seen you posting in a long time.  I hope that everything is okay with Candy, and that she got all those health issues taken care of?

Callie - My favorite is the Bridge Cam.  I like to watch the bridge when it goes up, and then down again, after the boat passes under.  Sometimes I switch to the Canal Cam, if it's going in that direction, but I usually watch the abundance of people and cars that have been waiting to cross over the bridge.  Sometimes they've waited a long time, so the flood of activity goes on and on, and then calms down . . . until the next time!

Mary Ann - I've also noticed that the boat schedule almost always changes. I'll be sitting here waiting for the arrival or departure of a boat, and when it doesn't happen, I'll go back and check the schedule.  Usually the ship no longer is listed - or it's listed for sometime in the overnight hours, or the following day.  I've been wanting to see The Paul Tregurtha, (sp?), because Joy said it was the largest of all the ships.  It's listed at least once a week, but rarely leaves or arrives on schedule.

CallieOK

Mary Ann,  I'm right in the middle of the Central Time Zone.
Hubby's grandmother once came to visit when we lived in Amarillo.  She wondered if it was ever going to get dark.  She was from Mississippi - on the eastern edge of the time zone.  We were on the western edge. There really was an hour's difference!

Mary Ann

Callie, we have the same thing in the Eastern Time Zone as we are on the western edge.  I'll see a live picture in New York or Boston and it will be dark there and we're in bright sunshine yet.  There probably is between 900 to 1000 miles from the east coast to my location.

Marilyn, I found the Paul Tregurtha in the St Clair River between US and Canada and it is moored.  I found there is a Lee Tregurtha ship but I don't know anything about it.

Mary  Ann

wjoan

Msrilyne, none of the issues have been taken care of.  She sees the GYN Dr. tomorrow and is going to see she can get a prescriptions for some anti biotics to help hheal some of the problems.
I do not post often as I really do not have much to say.  LOL

Mary Ann

Joan, all you have to do is poke your head in and say "hi" to let us know you're still around.

For the boat watchers, at 8 PM Duluth time (CDT), there is scheduled one boat to arrive and three to depart.  They're going to need a traffic cop!  FYI.  Schedule subject to change.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Out of curiosity, I looked up the Paul Tregurtha, and found lots of  interesting information. It's called, The Queen of the Lakes, because it's the longest ship on the Great Lakes.  Paul Tregurtha himself, is the owner and CEO of Mormac Marine Group.  He also owns lots of other boats that are operating on the lakes.   I see that he was born in 1936, which makes him younger than me.  Of course most people ARE younger, so I shouldn't be surprised! ha ha. If you want to know all there is to know about Paul, here is a good link.

When I go my son will let you all know.  He has promised me he would.  :)

Mary Ann

There's a boat coming in, so I'll try to make this short.

Thanks, Marilyn, for the info on Paul Tregurtha.  I see his wife and one daughter have Lee in their names which probably accounts for the Lee Tregurtha boats.

I saved the bear info, Patricia.

This video is why I enjoy watching foster rescue videos of both cats and dogs. The following is of a group of five kittens and their mom. The kittens are playing, rambunctiously careening in and out while up and down all over and through the room; while mom keeps an eye out. You can hear cats from other areas in the home as well. This video is from the foster home that Lizzie came from. It, the video is crazy and hilarious!

Hi Everyone.  It is going to be another very hot day.  I have already watered my lawn this morning.  I had thought I had set it to automatic but obviously hadn't so I had to manually set it this morning.  My main activity will be to pick up my friend and we will go to coffee for an hour.  I don't have any other errands to take care of this morning.  I think we may go out to eat for our main meal today but it will depend on how Pat is feeling this morning.  Scott was out for awhile but was so weary from working extra long hours that he didn't stay very long after our dinner.  The ribs and the rest of the meal were very tasty.  It was just the three of us for dinner.  We did get to speak to the youngest and the oldest of our great grandchildren on the phone.

Joan, I see summer has arrived out your way as it has here with a several day advance run at the very hot temperatures.  I sure hope it is a long time before we see your son make that posting you mentioned.

Callie, I am using Firebox and it supports the Cams without a problem.  It doesn't hurt your computer to have more than one browser installed as you will only load and use one at a time although more than one can run at the same time as these computer are now so powerful.  I checked the the three eagles are just sitting on the branch occasionally flapping their wings.

Where I live in the Eastern Time Zone we are only about 100 miles or so from the coast so we get dark earlier.  I guess today will be our longest day of sunlight and then we will begin to lose some minutes of it each day until winter sets in.

Callie, our hardest adjustment after having grown up and lived in the Central Time Zone was adjusting to the TV schedules with the news and all of the other programs starting an hour later.  Of course, one adjusts to this after time.  I used to be able to watch an hour of Johnny Carson and still get to bed by eleven.  I haven't watched one of the late night shows for years and anymore we usually turn the TV off about 8 pm and listen to audio books.  I seem to have lost interest in watching much TV anymore and rarely watch a movie on TV.

Patricia, I enjoyed watching the bears for a few minutes when they were out and about.  I am going to set a bookmark for the link you posted.  I will check out the kittens as well. Thanks.

wjoan

Larry, thanks. :)    My kidneys are going so not sure how long I have.  It is in their hands now.

Joan, I'm sorry to hear that.
