I finally saw a ship go thru the Soo Lock in the far channel, (One called E---Speer); and a Soo  Locks tour boat in the adjacent channel following behind a bit. It was hard as the cam kept shutting down and I had to restart several times. It began at 12:12 my time, and I wonder if it was three hours later, your time MaryAnn?

I've tried using the provided interactive map, but I've ended up all over the place, even in Eastern Russia inadvertently.

Mary Ann

Callie, yes, the camera is in (or on) a restaurant (Karl's) and Patricia, yes, the camera does shut down every two minutes.  I saw the Speer go through a short time ago, too.  As for the map, if you can get it to the Soo, I leave it there and I can see ships that come from both the east and west.  I do move it around occasionally, but get it back to where I want it.  There seem to be no more ships leaving Duluth today which means there won't be ships going through the Soo tomorrow.

Years ago, I had a cam shot of the Soo that was by the locks.  I think I did not have a map, so didn't see a lot of boats, but one day I had a notice that the site was corrupt and any shots of the Soo now by the LSSMM are corrupt and Firefox won't show them.  The restaurant shot is the only "live" shot I can find.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Patricia - I saw that boat also!  It's the first time I've seen a ship go out of the locks, instead of in. I have the same problem with that cam . . . it's always shutting down on me, and I have to keep clicking on it to continue seeing what I want to see.
I clicked on the Two Harbors cam, but I didn't see slips, or any loading docks??  Maybe my cam isn't showing the whole site?

angelface555

Marilyne, there is the Two Harbors boat dock cam. Then on the Two Harbors Depot cam, another cam, to the right, is a massive structure which has some slips. The ships have to turn and then maneuver into their assigned areas for loading or unloading. Some of the larger vessels can take over an hour to maneuver.

I just saw on GMA Youtube, that they would be starting this summer on a movie about "Downtown Abbey."  It will have Maggie Smith and feature almost the entire Abbey cast in the film.

Joy

Larry, I will be interested in how you make out taking the Lasix every other day.  I did take it for a while, but, spent most of the day in and out of the "necessary room".  Then the doctor told me if I was going out I didn't have to take it.  I finally just stopped taking it.  The last time when I was at the doctor's she thought I should really take it as my ankles do swell when I am on my feet a lot.  When, I am in the recliner, I do keep my feet up. I did get a new Rx, but haven't gotten it filled yet.  Just hate the thought of taking it.

I guess I should try the every other day thing.

When I had the last PET scan the end of April, there was a comment about having  cardiac calcification.  The one doctor told me that it was just something "old" people get and kind of brushed it off. When I saw my Primary care doctor, she recommended I see a cardiologist just as a precaution.  I haven't made that appointment yet, as I have had other problems to deal with.  But, she did tell me that the heart doctor would probably want me to take the Lasix.  I know I should take care of that appointment soon.  It was just for a consultation.  I have a lot of trouble with transportation, so have to schedule my appointments with my DIL's schedule and just haven't worked that out yet.  Right now, she has people out on vacation and she usually needs to be there when people are out.   Really stressful when you have to depend on others for necessary things.

MaryAnn, the map remains a mystery as to how to get to different areas. It seems to move every which way but the way I want it to go. I have no idea how to get it to the Soo.

Mary Ann

https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-84.370/centery:46.500/zoom:13

Patricia, I copied this from my site and I won't guarantee it will get you to the Soo, but mine comes up at the Soo most of the time.

If you come up at a big area in Canada, move your cursor down to where the river shows (St Mary's River), then move your cursor to the right.  It doesn't really say Soo and there are two icons in the water, one for Sault Ste Marie Ontario and the other a small dot for Sault Ste Marie Michigan.

Another thing you might try - find the line that indicates the border between the two countries.  I think you would be west of the two Soos, so follow the line until you find some activity, even if it is only the two cities.

It's a bit difficult when we are so far apart to help and as I often say, I explain things "clear as mud".  I hope I've helped, nevertheless.

PS - I tried my link and came up with what I have.

Mary Ann

MaryTX

Patricia, most of the time when I click on the link Mary Ann posted, Soo is in the center of the screen.

Sometimes tho, I get a screen with every ship in the world!  Go to the upper left corner and hit search.  Choose the area you want and go down to US East Coast and click on it.  When it comes up, then use your cursor to scan the page until you come to the US/Canada and hit the + in the upper right corner until the screen gets big enough and Soo is pretty much in the center.

My explanations are usually as "clear as mud" also  ;D.

MaryTX - Good instructions.  I haven't had to use them, but I think your instructions were "clearer than mud".

Hi Everyone.  Another cloudy morning as it was all day yesterday.  I am looking forward to a nice day today.  My main activities will be attending Sunday School and Church and then probably getting something to bring home for our main meal of the day. At this point I have no idea of whether Pat will be attending Church with me as she is still asleep.  She is really enjoying the new sheets as for the first time says she is waking up without being hot.  I accomplished nothing yesterday other than losing 4 1/2 pounds of weight after taking the first Lasix tablet yesterday morning so you know what I was doing all day long.  I will probably watch some of end of the golf tournament this afternoon.

Mary Ann, interesting how your dad had to take his final exams for his correspondence courses.  I bet he was proud to attend that graduation and get his degree after a lot of hard work on it while maintaining a job and supporting his family.

Marilyne, I think if I had a small pleasure boat I would want to stay away from a large ship as it might run over me if something happened to my boat motor.  I suppose the big ship would probably be going slow enough that it really wouldn't do any damage.

Patricia, it sounds like Alan is a very kind and caring person and Duchess is fortunate to have him as her caregiver.  Farrah is not going to let you forget to feed her.

Callie, at least the street performers offer something in return for asking for money.

Joy, I used to take the Lasix everyday but was having the salt problem so was took to take it as needed.  I had just stopped taking it but obviously I need to do so.  I am glad it will be every other day and trying to add a little salt to my food although I really don't like to do so.

Mary, I thought your instructions were very good.

FlaJean

Larry, we got our order of a king set of Boll and Branch sheets several days ago.  Pleased with them.  They are comfortable and not skimpy which is good as we have such a thick mattress.

We have had several nice rains lately, but the ground just soaks it up.  We had a half acre in Ocala but here our yard is small and LarryJ was out watering this morning before it gets too hot..  We have an inground watering system but it needs adjusting.  Eventually We will get it fixed but LarryJ doesn’t do much yard work anymore and enjoys spending a little time outside watering the flowers and small yard.

Mary Ann

Jean, I'm with Larry, liking to water the flowers.  But I have such a small space here that it doesn't matter.  I do have a problem and I discussed it with Tom in that our neighbor has taken over our "garden" area under the kitchen window and now we have quack grass growing all over.  I hate to discourage her because neither Tom nor I can do gardening now.  I do have some myrtle that I want to put in the flower area and it will spread.  When I had that between the garage and sidewalk, I had no weeds.  My watering these days consists of putting a sprinkler in the middle of the place.

It is hot so far today - 85 at 12:45.  I just shut the doors and lowered the thermostat so the a/c would go on.  I did not feel up to church this morning, so I did not go, but Dot picked me up after church and we went to the Cholesterol Pit where we had our usual.  i don't feel bad and I'm not sick, I just feel blah!

Tomorrow is Tom's 61st birthday.  Dot is going to fix a dinner for us Wednesday.

Good afternoon, I did not go to bed until 6AM I was up with hematoma it has gotten bigger and I have to see a surgeon next week.

Joy I have to take lasix everyday, as I have CHF, and get edema in my feet

MaryAnn, my nephew turned 64 Tuesday. I fixed and angel food cake with pineapple whipped cream icing and invited a few of the neighbors over. one brought wine and another hot dog hors d'oeuvres

Patricia, since I have found the camera cams I have been playing around. I watch the NYC harbor and times sq. which is kind of fund to see

Gloria de - It's good that you're seeing the surgeon this week, about your hematoma.  I'm sorry that you're having so much pain, but hope it gets taken care of soon.  Sounds like your nephew had a nice birthday celebration.  I love angel food cake with the pineapple frosting!

Mary Ann - I think I mentioned before, that Tom is only one year older than my oldest daughter.  She turned 60 in May, and was not happy about it, or anxious to have a party of any sort.  I tried to tell her that when she's my age, she'll realize how young 60 is!

Last night I had a chance to say goodnight and bid farewell to "Paul".  The schedule said he would be departing at midnight, Duluth time.  That was 10:00 here, so I waited and waited, and then checked the schedule again, and saw that the time had been moved to 1:05 am.  By then it was already 10:30 here, so I decided to go ahead and wait, and I was pleased that he was on time, and looking bright and busy as he went under the bridge. Now that I'm getting to know the names of all the boats, I can see that they are on the move, or loading/unloading, 24 hours a day.  They must have a night crew and a day crew, in order to be in constant motion.  I guess he will be appearing or has already appeared at the Soo Locks, sometime today?   I don't know how long it takes to get from Duluth to the Soo?

FlaJean

GloriaDe, I hope everything goes well with your visit to the surgeon.  That was really nice of you to bake your nephew a cakeâ€"-sounds delicious.

Marilyne, my oldest daughter was 60 on St Patrick’s Day and my son will be 59 next month.  Then along comes the baby at 52 in Sept.  I had two sisters, one was 13 years older and the other 9 years older.  It was lonely at times growing up and I often had my head buried in a book.

Mary Ann, I know what you mean by having a blah day.  I’m having one today.

Mary Ann

I've been watching golf and saw Michael Kim win - a first for him.  He turned 25 yesterday.  When that finished, I came to the computer in time to see a ship leave Superior.  I think that is it for the time being in the Duluth area.  I did see where there is a ship maybe waiting to go west at the Soo so I may be able to see it go through the channel.

As I've said, I did not go to church today but Dot stopped by and we made it to the Cholesterol Pit.  When Tom left in the morning, he said he'd be gone most of the day.  I made the mistake of telling him I felt blah, and I said I was not sick, but he came home to take me to breakfast, not knowing I had my brunch.  He made himself a breakfast and has been here all day.  I feel bad about causing him to change his plans.  I took a nap in the afternoon and when I woke up, there was a cat on the bed with me.  I managed to leave without disturbing him but somewhere along the line, he left my bed and I guess he's downstairs looking out windows.  In the meantime, I feel better, no blahs.

Tom is going to celebrate his birthday tomorrow with Robin and on Wednesday, he and I are going to Dot's for another celebration.  I have no idea what his kids plan - if anything.  James and Alicia have just moved and Cate is in no position to host anything, so we shall see.  I give money these days.

We've had a warm day today but I see the temp is about 80 and it has been near 90.  I don't notice, since I'm inside.  Good old A/C!

Grand Haven has been busy, lots of people in and out of the water and several boats.

Mary Ann

Sasha

It seems odd this morning to have high humidity and full overcast, but it looks and feels threatening enough to postpone a trip to Newport News. We’ll concentrate on these fast-growing cat toenails instead. Hope you’re all well or at least full of optimism.
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Mary Ann

Sasha, I wish I could add a cat to your toenail clipping because Kendrick needs it badly.  I can't manage him in that respect but Annie can.  She doesn't get here often enough to do it.

I've watched a ship come in to Duluth and that's my ship duty for the morning.

As I've mentioned, today is Tom's 61st birthday.  He and I are going to the Blue Water Grill for lunch where he will get a free lunch.  First we have to stop at the bank so I can get money to pay for my own lunch.  Tonight he is going to eat with Robin; I don't know if they'll eat out or in.  Wednesday we are going to Dot's for supper and Thursday we will be going to Annie's for a family get together.  The twins will be there, so Dot is planning to go with us.  Birthdays seem to get drawn out these days.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, sounds like you're feeling better today.  I have those blah days quite often lately.  Not sick, but just a total lack of energy, and no appetite.  Fun for Tom, celebrating his birthday today, and throughout the rest of the week. :)  That will be a large family gathering at Annie's place, and will be nice for everyone to see the twins, and each other.  I hope your lunch was a good one today, at the Blue Water Grill?

Jean, The ages of your three adult children are about the same as mine.  Oldest daughter is 60, then comes son, who was 57 in March, and then our younger daughter, who turned 49 in April.  She is 11 years younger than her sister, and a 8 years younger than her brother, so is similar to you and your sisters.  Like you, she was raised kind of like an only child.

Sasha, your weather sounds exactly like mine this morning,  only on opposite coasts. Overcast and very humid, which is unusual here in CA.  I was always uneasy about  clipping any of my cats toenails - afraid that I would clip them too short, and would injure and cause pain.  I took them to the vet about once a year for a professional clip, but the rest of the time I relied on various scratching devices, and one backyard tree that still has a shredded trunk!

wjoan

Mornin all.  Not much news from WA today.  Still in the triple digits, Dan meets with the Surgeon  today for a talk.  <back Surgery>   I am still losing weight <yippee> and other than that all is well. <as long as one stays indoors.>  LOL

Why would one take a tent to the beach??

Mary Ann

#9321
Joan, it might depend on what kind of tent - if it's just a cover, it would shield from the sun but a person could still enjoy the beach and water.  There are all sorts of tents.

PS -  I just looked at Grand Haven - is that where you saw the tent?  What I saw is what I was thinking of, only with no sides.

Tom and I celebrated his birthday with lunch at the Blue Water Grill.  I had a Whitefish sandwich and Tom had a hamburger.  Tom's hamburger came without any condiments so he asked for those and got them.  Other than that, it was a good meal and his was free.  Tonight he and Robin are going to eat out.  I discovered I am to have lunch with my retiree friends tomorrow, but we are to go to Dot's Wednesday and Annie's Thursday and I think he has something going on Friday which does not include me, so i am going to cancel my retiree lunch as i can't take four days eating out in one week.

I want to water in front of our building and Tom discovered the faucet was broken.  The Association puts something on the faucet in the fall to prevent a backup and that is broken so we can't use the faucet.  We are having the same weather much of the country is having with no rain and hot weather and that is why I want to water the garden part.  I e-mailed one man who takes care of the sprinkler system and I hope he's the one who cares for the faucets.

Mary Ann

angelface555

Good morning from the Interior with no real news other than the state has officially purchased all of the Alaskan buildings from the departing Candian company and yes, tests confirm that Duchess has diabetes. Knowing Alan, he is already on the way to becoming an expert on feline issues. His is a very driven personality.

I haven't had a chance to look at the cams as the last few days have been busy and this week will be as well. Speaking of family, my older sister was 69 in April, and I will be 67 in the last part of July and my youngest sister who was a surprise like others mentioned here, was 58 at the end of May.

wjoan

Mary Ann that's the one.  :)

Joan, I know it is very hot out today, especially next to the water.  The sun comes from the west at this time of day and it is possible the people wanted to shade themselves from the sun, also you can get wind burned from being next to the water when/if the wind is blowing.  Other than that, I have no idea.

I just saw something interesting and strange.  i clicked on the Soo and the Dutch ship Eemsborg was coming through.  At both the front and back sides of the ship there were two men walking, holding cables (ropes?) as if guiding the ship.  I would think the size of the ship would overrule anything the cables could do.  The ship did not go through the second channel, but the first.

The Meijer Botanical Garden had a corpse flower blossom after 18 years.  They planted it as a seed in 2000 and have repotted it occasionally and said when they repot it this next time, they'll have to make a new pot because the corm is too large for what they can buy now.  I did not go see it, so did not get to smell it.  I wonder how many years it will take to bloom again.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

When I posted my message in here this morning, I noticed that Larry, had not posted either here or in Soda Shoppe at that time.  I see that he still hasn't been in S&F today, which is unusual for him. I hope that he and Pat are both okay?

Two interesting ships arriving today in Duluth.  The Dutch boat, FRASERBORG, will be there tonight at 8:30, (Duluth time) which is early enough for all of us in our different time zones to see it.  Later on tonight there will be a boat flying the flag of, The Marshall Islands, called THE FEDERAL LEDA. I think it said 10:30, which means still early enough for some of us to see.  Tomorrow, the FEDERAL ASAHI will arrive. Can’t remember the time on that one.  I Googled them both, and saw that Asahi was from Hong Kong, but didn't say where Leda was from?  I wonder why The Marshall Islands flag on them both?

angelface555

Thanks for the information, Marilyne!

The shipping lines register the boats in the countries that provide them the most benefits for cheaper and those are the flags they fly. Altho it does not mean they are from or work for or within those countries.

Here is an action-packed summary of the Katmai, Brook Falls cam. It really gets busy in September when the salmon runs begin in earnest'

Hi Everyone.  It is another overcast day and a good possibility of more rain.  We had at least 1 1/2 inches of rain yesterday afternoon and during the night.  We are to get to about 90 degrees this afternoon.

I don't have much on the calendar for today.  The kitchen chores are done and at 10 am my friend will be here for an hour.  Today is the 60th anniversary of IHOP opening and they are offering sixty cent pancakes.  Pat mentioned we might take that in but we will just have to wait and see how she is feeling.  That will likely be it for today.  For some reason I didn't feel very peppy yesterday but hope for a better day today.

Marilyne, once again I apparently failed to hit the post button after preparing my comments here yesterday. This seems to be happening fairly often even though I try to be careful.

Jean, nice to read you like the Boll and Branch sheets.

Mary Ann, I want to wish Tom  a Happy Birthday and it sounds like there are several activities planned to mark the occasion.  There are several places here that offer a free entree or sandwich on your birthday.  Nice to see you and Tom took advantage of the offer he had.

deAngel, Happy Birthday, although belated, to your nephew.  I bet that cake and pineapple icing were delicious.  I hope your leg is feeling better.

Joan, sure hope Dan can get relief from his back issues with surgery.  Are you trying to lose weight?

Patricia, sorry to read that Alan's cat does have diabetes.

Mary Ann

I've been waiting for a ship to go through the locks but the camera in the cafe locked and didn't show anything.  I did see the last half of a ship earlier.  In Duluth it said a ship was coming in but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Supposedly, it is Kendrick's 5th birthday and I wished him a Happy Birthday, but we are not going to celebrate.  We're doing enough for Tom's birthday.  And as I recall, my birthday was stretched over a few days.

It was cooler this morning but we will still be in the high 80s.  Outside now it is 70 degrees.

Our sprinkler fixit man e-mailed me that my faucet was fixed so I will water a section that does not get watered.  I must get dressed first and that will be a while.

Last night I sat on the deck and it was very nice - comfortable temperature and a very slight breeze blowing.  When I was ready to come in, Kendrick decided he wanted to join me.  I left him on the deck while I battened down the hatches.  He was ready to come in then.  I let him out on the front stoop while I got my coffee and cookie ready this morning and when I opened the door for him to come in, he came right in.  Some days he minds very good and some days, he does not!

Larry, I have not seen any mention of an IHOP anniversary.  Maybe if I go to their web site I'll see something.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Nothing happening today, except daughter Sandy, will be coming over to do her laundry and then she'll stay for dinner.  I'm not going to cook anything, so we'll probably take her out for dinner to either The Diner, or Harry's Hofbrau.

Mary Ann, I also looked at the Soo Locks this morning, and the cam was out. I did see three ships last night at Duluth . . . the Dutch ship, an American ship and finally, The Federal Leda.  At least I think that's what it was?  I couldn't read the name on the ship itself, and no flag flying that I could see?  However, it was the Leda, according to the schedule.  In spite of the lights on the bridge, it seemed especially dark last night . . . maybe a new moon?    HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Kendrick!  Give him some special attention from me!

Patricia, I looked at the YouTube video from Brook Falls, and enjoyed watching it from that different angle.  I was surprised to see the wolf in the water with the bears!!  At least I think it was a wolf?  He looked a lot like our local coyotes.  I think the reason was probably because his fur was wet and slicked down?  About the same size body, and head, face, etc. of a coyote.
