I used to eat frozen yogurt as my ice cream and I liked it.  When Tom came to live here, I discontinued using it.  Now neither Tom nor I eats much ice cream.

Probably during WW II, I had a recipe for chocolate cake using mayo in it.  It probably took the place of shortening and who knows what else.  I may have the recipe somewhere, but I'd have to hunt for it so I really don't know all of the ingredients.  As I recall, it did not taste of mayo and did not taste bad.  Most likely the chocolate overpowered the mayo taste.

Tomorrow, Saturday, our electricity will be shut down for the entire day . . . 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM!  According to our notice, it's to repair underground equipment.  We're assuming that means gas lines that run underground throughout both Northern and Southern California.  There have been a few gas explosions in Northern CA, so I'm happy to see them start doing repairs and upgrades, if necessary.  The only gas we have at our house is for the water heater, and furnace/AC. Our appliances are all electric, and of course we'll have no computers or TV for the entire day.  I'm planning to get the coffee ready tonight before bed, and then will turn it on before 7:00, so at least we will have our morning Mr. Coffee!

So I'll say an early "Good Morning" to you all right now, and hope to be checking back in sometime tomorrow evening.

MarsGal

I was interested in your note, Patricia, about the division line between atmosphere and space has changed. I hadn't run across that yet.

Even with all this rain, the grass is not growing as fast as in the spring. It is a nice length now and doesn't really need to be cut yet. So, I will put that off. With fog this morning and the humidity so high, I doubt the grass will dry out enough to mow this morning anyway.

I have never liked mayo. It is too rich for me. I prefer salad dressing.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It looks like we are in for another hot and humid day with not much likelihood of any rain.  This was one of those morning I didn't want to arise and get going.  The only thing I plan to do today, besides the morning chores in the kitchen and getting Pat's breakfast, is to attend a meeting this morning.  I hope to watch some golf later this afternoon.  About the only thing I completed yesterday was to finish the ebook I was reading and also listen to a couple of hours of my audio book.  We did get a very pleasant and unexpected surprise yesterday when I got the mail as there was a check in the mail from our local hospital for a sizeable amount marked as having been a refund.  There was no indication what it related to and I have to wonder if an audit was performed on last year showing we had been over billed.  I don't expect the mail to be as friendly today.

Mary Ann, it sounds like being with the twins, as well as the rest of the family, was indeed a joy.  These little ones grow up so fast and everyday is a new adventure in learning for them.  It is difficult to be moderate in our eating when there is so much good food on the table.

MarsGal, before last year the humidity ran very high in our house but we got a dehumidifier and guess we got it out as this year it is staying at around 45 rather than in the 70's range and haven't needed to use the dehumidifier.  We are most happy about that as the dehumidifier was a noisy little appliance but it sure did the job.  I used an electric mower for a number of years when I had small yards.  I also hope you don't experience a problem with any of your cats.

Patricia, I saw that ice cream on TV and a discussion of it.  It is sort of off putting to me and like Marlyne,  I wouldn't select it over a more desirable flavor. I don't care for yogurt unless it is made into ice cream.  Interesting statistic regarding earth.  I do know that Pat has made chocolate cake with mayo in the past and it was always moist and very good.

Sandy, you have more willpower than I do although sure I could also not eating before 11 in the morning. I try not to nibble on anything after dinner and find if I go brush my teeth right away that is a good incentive as don't want to have to do so again that evening.  I sure don't mind your rambling as it is interesting to read.

Marilyne, I hope it won't be really not as at your house with the electricity shut off.  There is no natural gas lines in our neighborhood as these are all electric homes.  This will be a good day to go out and eat although I guess the shutoff might cause the restaurants to close as well.

Patricia, thanks for the Mayo Chocolate Cake recipe.  Before I saw the completed directions, I knew it was made in a 9" cake pan (serves 9) and I probably did use a 9" cake pan (my mother called them "dripping pans") and I still have the two 9" pans.  I don't bake cakes any longer, but many today call for 8" pans.  I have some of those too.  If I have a reason, I will have to bake the Mayo cake.

Sasha, yes, I post in any of the folders by clicking on "Reply".  I have had occasion when there was no "Reply", so could not post.  I sometimes will write in Word, but I have to copy what I wrote and still hit "Reply".

Marilyn, we will miss your posts today.  I have seen a couple of freighters go through the Soo and saw one unexpectedly leave Two Harbors.  I was at that site to watch the fishermen.  They really know what they are doing when they back down the ramp to drop off or pick up their boats.  Then there are the walkers, especially those with dogs and the dogs love the water.

I've done my Saturday morning personal things and there are always household things to do that I do little of.  I am feeling fine, having recovered from my overeating Thursday night, but Tom says he feels just OK.  I think his trouble is overdoing as well as having overeaten.  I hope next week he can slow down - he burns his candle at both ends and he's a big boy so should be able to do as he should as well as what he wants.

We have the start of a nice day - in the high 70s today.

Good morning from a more moderate Interior! We had quite a surprise thundershower yesterday with lots of booming and rain but no wind that I could see. It was more like a gale, noisy, fast moving and over quickly!

Sasha, there have been numerous errors since Oldsman switched to a new server or format. It seems there is always small issues to straighten out when this happens, and it takes awhile. All we can do is post in his new server forum so that he is aware of issues.

I was making coffee this morning when I noticed Farrah sitting facing the closet door looking as if she had been placed in the corner with her nose touching the wall! Yes, she is persistent, Larry. She must think I'm very slow and needs graphic illustrations!

MarsGal, that atmospheric info was from Live Sciences.com. I have a daily email from them that is always informative.    https://www.livescience.com/

There are five new kittens at FDJ's foster cam but so far no live streaming. There are a few videos from when they arrived yesterday. There is no backstory or what happened to mom, but they were found and brought in. They are all male, eight weeks old; one calico, one grey, one black and two tuxes. They were all very ill when found. Their eyes were literally swollen shut with gunk, and so were their noses. Because of that, they are a couple of weeks behind developmentally.

After just one day of being treated with eye meds, medicated eye washes and nose drops they are already attempting to play. They are receiving medication mixed into a watery slurry of wet kitten food and fed via a syringe. They weren't eating before because one, they couldn't find food and two, they couldn't see or smell it due to their illness.

They are called "The Five Guys" as FDJ always has themes with new kittens and they're named;

Tux with white spot on nose - Peanut
Tux with white chin - Tomato
Gray - Pickles
Tabby - Jalapeno
Black tux (Black face w/small charm & bikini) - Relish

From the site;

"Good morning, kittens!  It's time for food, and meds, and eye and nose degunking, and general check over to see how you're all doing.  Some of them have really perked up as the antibiotics and degunking start doing their magic.  Pickles and Jalapeno are all over the place!  Hoping Tomato picks up quickly, too, poor kiddo.

The Five Guys have bad eye infections and nasal congestion, and they all have varying degrees of vision, from both eyes being open to both being closed and stages in between. They aren't live on the cam at the shelter's wish until they're doing a bit better.

They are eight weeks old but only six development wise.

Patricia, I watched the kittens for about five minutes and they were very active most of the time.  I think the grey, striped kitten was the most active.

The one gray striped or calico, Jalapeno is the best feeling of the lot. Three, the gray, one black and a tux have eyes that presently can only distinguish light from dark and the other black kitten is blind. Hopefully, if the UTI and flu are cleared up, they will all regain their eyesight.

The antibiotics in the kitten food slurry are taking effect on how good they're starting to feel. When they first came in, they slept all the time. They were a week at the vet's before moving to the foster home. They're syringe fed to get medicine and nutrients in their bodies asap.

I get attached to each litter and cat it seems.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I can see how you get attached to the kittens because kittens are so cute and playful.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Thanks, Patricia, I've bookmarked the Live Science site.

Well, I guess I will tackle the front yard today. I need the exercise, if not the heat and humidity. Hopefully, the grass won't be very wet from dew before it gets miserable out.

Anyone interested might want to look in on the SeniorLearn.org "The Library" discussion board. Barb has been holding forth on some interesting books on the world economy that she is reading, beginning with her post #19154. It includes Adults in the Room: My Battle with the European and American Deep Establishment by the Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. Check out the rest of her list. http://seniorlearn.org/forum/index.php

Good morning to everyone.  The power outage yesterday went exactly as planned . . . off at a little after 7:00 am, and back on again at 5:00.  One BIG problem!  When the electricity came back on, our AC did not!  So we were without AC all day and night, and of course it's still out this morning.  It's extremely uncomfortable here, as you can well imagine.  Not only the high temps expected to again be in the 90's, but the thick smoke from the wildfires throughout California makes it difficult to breath.  The fires are horrendous, and I will not complain about being without AC for a few days, when I see how others are suffering the loss of their homes, pets, and even family members.

MarsGal - I responded to your post about SeniorLearn, in the Library/Bookshelf folder.

MaryTX

Marilyn, have you checked your A/C circuit breaker in the breaker box?  Our A/C went out, called the repair guy.  He went to the breaker box, flicked the switch and it came on!   It had never occurred to us to look at the breaker.  Knock on wood, it's running fine now.

If anyone wants to see the list of videos on the kittens, it's here.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF2t_zsieVfTP-pLHmf_tzbaMrejqN0kN

They were brought in extremely weak and ill. No backstory or what happened to Mom. They are considered eight weeks old but developmentally delayed two weeks due to UTIs, flu and severe eye crusting. They were at the time, unable to eat or eliminate so spent a week on IVs at the vet before being released to a foster home.

Since they are having medicine fed by syringe beside offered dry kibble, water, and wet food, they have already started acting more like their age. Each syringe feeding, they also receive nose and eye drops and medicated eyewashes. They are so different than the last gray calicos that were the same age when offered for adoption, but it's hoped they will regain their health and their eyesight.

Patricia, the kittens are cute and I watched some, but I don't feel I want to use 25 plus minutes to watch them.

Dot and I went to church this morning, then to the Cholesterol Pit for brunch.

We nearly had a CAT-astrophe yesterday, but as before, things turned out OK.  I let Kendrick out for a few minutes, then forgot about him.  When I didn't let him in the house, he wandered and it was a couple of hours before I realized he was gone.  I thought he was downstairs sleeping, as he often does.  When I opened a door to the deck and he didn't come running, I knew he was out.  Tom was gone and every sound I heard, I thought it might be the cat at the door - only it was not.  I got up about 3:30 to go to the bathroom and I looked out the front door and there was no cat.  I often only sleep four hours anyway (last night 11 pm to 3 am) so I did not go back to sleep.  About 4:30 am I heard noises in Tom's room and in a couple of minutes a cat jumped on my bed as if to show me he was back.  He came back a few minutes later for a rubdown but when I quit that, he left.  Somewhere around 8 am, he jumped on my bed and slept the sleep of the just.  The funny thing was when I returned from my morning, I could not find him and again assumed he was downstairs.  Later when I was going to sit on the deck, I called to him and he came from my bedroom and I think he was under the bed because he wasn't on top.  Kendrick doesn't need training; I do and I'll just have to stand by the door and let him in after a few minutes and not do other things.

MaryAnn, I don't watch 25 minutes either, just some here and there. Watching kittens is not for everyone as watching ships isn't for everyone. I just enjoy watching cats being saved. I also watch similar dog videos

The majority are a minute or less. And the videos will only be for about a week before adoption or live cam.

Marilyne

MaryTX - Thank you so much - It worked!  AJ had checked the breaker box yesterday, and all of the switches were going in the correct direction, so he thought that was not the problem.  After I told him about your message, he looked again, and just to be sure, he clicked the AC/heater switch off and on. Sure enough, the AC came on!  We were so pleased and grateful to you!  Then he Googled it, and found out that when you have a lengthy electrical outage, and the power suddenly is restored, there is a surge of current that often will knock out at least one major appliance or the HVAC system.  So checking the switches is the thing to do.  We were anticipating another very hot day here, but turned out to be cool and comfortable!

Mary Ann - I'm so glad that Kendrick returned and that he's okay.  Yes, I think it would be best if you stand and wait when you let him out, or somehow stick a note some place in the house to remind you.  Maybe a Post-it note on your computer monitor?   I rarely ever watch YouTube videos for much longer than the time it takes to play a recording of a single song - maybe three to seven minutes.  Some people actually sit and watch entire TV shows or movies on YouTube.  Something I could never do.  I do like to watch the kitten videos, but only for about that length of time.

Marilyn, when I have let Kendrick out the front door onto the stoop (about 4x6) I usually do stand at the door and he'll look up at me to see when/if I'm going to open it for him to come in.  This time I was interrupted and forgot about him and after a length of time I guess he decided I didn't care so took off for parts unknown.  To the west of us is a duplex that has some wooded area behind it and further west is more growth and I think that is where he goes.  I cannot walk on uneven ground, so I can't go check on him.  And I was alone last night, so no one to help me.  Other escapades he has had have been mostly when he has scooted out the door and refused to come in.  I have forgotten him before, too.  He looks fine when he comes back, no bruises or bites by other animals.

He is lying on the living room floor and did not even want to go on the deck with me.  I wonder if he sleeps at all when he's out and I'll never know because he'll never tell!

Mary Ann

Hi Everyone.  We have another overcast morning with only a low percentage chance of rain today.  Yesterday we had some thunder but no showers in our neighborhood.  It looks like we will stay in the upper 80's this afternoon.  The weather forecast says we are in for very heavy rains this week. We had a very good Sunday School and Church Service yesterday.  Our new Associate Minister gave an excellent sermon, the first time he preached in our Church, as our regular pastor was up in North Carolina on a well earned weeks vacation last week.  My calendar is clear for today other than getting Pat's breakfast when she arises this morning.

Marilyne, I wrote a post but couldn't post yesterday due to the few software problems we had with error messages yesterday.  I wanted to tell you also my experience with the AC tech just resetting the breakers and was glad to see that Mary had been able too post the same information.  .  Glad you were able to get the information and save the cost of a tech's visit. It used to be the breakers would flip over to an off position but they don't seem to anymore.  The tech we had out said that the AC's have built in protection in case of a major power surge, and that sometimes the breaker is turned off to protect the unit.  Our unit also has a separate breaker box on the outside of the house by the AC that he said to switch off and back on if needed.  Who knew!

Mary Ann, nice to see that you and Dot were up to attending Church yesterday and then having your usual brunch at the Cholesterol Pit.  It sounds like Kendrick can take care of himself when he gets out and roams around.  He might have been in hiding somewhere near by and trying to teach you a lesson not to ignore him.  :)

Patricia, poor Farrah just can't get her message through to you, at least in her mind.  Animals do have their way of communicating to us.  I will try to check out the kitten cam today.  I haven't checked on any of the cams for several days.  It sounds like those poor kittens needed rescue in a big way.  Interesting names for the new kittens.

MarsGal, I have been reading "The Library" discussion and it has been very interesting.  I have enjoyed the comments on the world economy.

larryhanna

I had to come back and share this link to a wonderful and inspiring video I just watched.  It will inspire you and hope help make your day.  It is called "the Wisest Person I Ever Met".

Mary Ann

Larry, I doubt Kendrick was trying to teach me a lesson because this is not the first time he's stayed out all night.  He knows Tom's bedroom window and goes to it and lets Tom know he is there and wants to come in.  I'm surprised Tom heard him because Tom uses a CPAP which has some noise to it.  I wonder if Kendrick sleeps at all on his escapade because he slept all day yesterday.  When I opened certain doors or drawers, he didn't budge.  I know he was all in.  I think he was glad to be in the safety of his home.  He's moving a bit more like normal today.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I haven't been following the boat schedule or any of the webcams for the past couple of days, so will have to take a look when I finish this post. I haven't really gotten back to my usual routine, since Saturday's all day power outage.

The devastating wildfires here in CA, have become the new normal.  Used to be that they didn't happen until September and October, but now starting in June, and going on throughout the summer. All of the rural and mountain communities are now in jeopardy, and even the National Parks, like Yosemite and also many of the giant redwood groves are on fire.  There doesn't seem to be any way to stop the fires, once they get started.

Larry - I'm grateful to MaryTX, for telling me about the circuit breakers.  It's something that most people don't realize.  As you said - used to be that you opened the box and could see right away if one of the switches was off, but now that's not the case.  I hope the word gets out, and will save lots of people from having to pay an HVAC technician.

We haven't heard from Gloria/Lindancer in a few days?  I hope her leg is healing and that she is doing well?

MarsGal

Larry, I am disappointed that more people didn't chime in on Barb's book comments. I guess economics goes over most peoples heads, or they think it will and don't try. My last book on economics was Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner which as very readable and easy to understand. I have their second book, but as usual, has been languishing in my TBR pile for several years.

About the same time, I read F. A. Hayek's The Road to Serfdom which is dense and slow going. Well, I just checked my book and discovered that I stopped after the forward, introduction and preface, and never got back to reading the actual book. I must have stopped because I had other things going, and forgot to go back to it. Now that I have pulled in back off the shelf, I'll have to finish it before I get Adults in the Room: My Battle with the European and American Deep Establishment

Thank you, too, for sharing that inspirational message.

This morning I did as much of the backyard as I am going to this week. I also pulled some weeds and dug out some trees beginning to grow in my yard unwanted. The neighborhood maple trees out did themselves with seed this year, the squirrels continue to plant oak and walnut seeds in unwanted places, and those darn sumac are all over the place. The nasty thing about the sumac, I discovered last year, is that they not only grow from seed, but will send up shoots from their roots. I tried digging out a small shoot last year that I thought was a seedling only do pull up at least six feet of a root at least 1.5 inches width which must have come from the darn weed trees growing at the bottom half of my neighbor's yard.

wjoan

Marilyne, sorry to hear of all the fires, and the redwood trees, what a shame.  Some are ancient.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I wondered about your area when I read about the fires in northern CA.  I had read about fires in or around Yosemite.  That is one park I would like to have seen but never got out that far.

I often think that the leaders of the countries that want to destroy us shouldn't worry because Mother Nature is doing a good job of it what with fires, floods, droughts and tornadoes.

JeanneP,  here's the link I use for Times Square.

Takes a little bit  for the "EarthCam" to come up.  You can bring it to full screen by clicking in the lower right hand corner.  To minimize, put your mouse in the lower right hand corner of the full screen and click the "square".
Cam is over the intersection and will focus on one part for a few minutes and then move to another part.

Watch for the people dressed as Disney characters who walk up to people and ask if they'd like to take a picture - then, of course, ask for money to pose with them.  Granddaughter who lives in NYC says they may be  connected with the Disney store across the street.

I like the "Street Scene" cam in the small pix at the bottom.  It's next to the red bleachers that you see in one shot on the other cam.  Granddaughter says there's a ticket booth under the bleachers where you can get discount tickets for Broadway shows.

Have fun!
