Carol, did you ever go over to Bremerton and tour the USS Missouri when it was mothballed there?  There was just a plank from the dock to the ship when we went.

Tom and I went out for dinner tonight and I said I wanted something simple.  So many restaurants gussy up the plates so we went to Russ' which is where the old folks go.  I saw one table where there were younger folks and with children.  I had a roast beef sandwich and ate almost all of it.  Most cases when I get a sandwich I bring half of it home.  I did not want fries so told the waitress that.  I noticed on the menu that fries were $1 extra, but the sandwich itself was only $5.  I try not to get fries.  My plates look very bare when I don't get fries, but I don't need them anyway.

I am feeling better and did not take a nap this afternoon.  I am getting tired now but I'll last until bedtime.  I am not a good sleeper but I surprised myself Sunday afternoon when I napped for three hours.  Tom was alarmed when I told him that, but I think I just had to recover the sleep I lost.  Tom, Dot and I shared a pizza Saturday when Geoff was in town and neither Tom nor Dot was affected so I don't know if it was the pizza or something else.  Anyway, I feel my usual self now.

I remember when Mount St Helen "went off" and we had eerie skies for several days from the ash in the air.

Good evening, from a very drippy, sodden Interior.  If we didn't have the Chena Flood Control system of dams, we'd be all underwater as it was in August of 1967! I've spent lots of time reading, napping and repeat. I'm so glad I don't have to go out there in all that wind, (40-mile an hour gusts); and wet! I'm tempted to turn the heat on as the more cooling air comes in around the balcony doors, but that certainly wouldn't help the draft!

I've always been a registered Independent, most voters are here, but among so many smaller parties as well as the two main ones, there is often not a lot to choose from. What bothers me is the current crop who seem to revel in open corruption and the folks who champion them if they seem to share part of their agenda. I think Lincoln said it best when he said, a house divided against itself cannot stand.

I remember once in Tennessee, riding in an overhead tram. The rocking motion didn't help my distress either! Another fear is riding along the outside of the mountains with steep drops and those little metal curbs masquerading as a fence! There is a small bedroom community, Chugiak, just outside of Anchorage, and the only road linking the two is a mountain pass with signs warning drivers to be aware of falling rocks. Not my favorite route!

I thought it looked like a nice day when I looked out the window but when I looked at radar, nearly all of Michigan was clear - except around here!

We almost had a financial crisis yesterday.  Tom and I went out to eat and I gave him a $20 bill.  Last night he said he did not have it, that I had not given it to him.  I remembered opening and closing my billfold and decided the $20 was mixed in with the menus.  Tom needed $20 for something else, so I loaned him another $20, figuring I had paid $40 for a $20 meal.  This morning Tom said he found the $20 in his shirt pocket so I got $20 back.  Whew!

I hear mowing around here and it's not Thursday.  I wonder whose schedule was changed.  Doesn't matter, it has to be done regardless of the day.

Hi Everyone.  Another beautiful morning after a pretty stormy night last night.  There was a lot of thunder and lightning, including a strike somewhere very close to us and then quite a bit of rain.  Today is to get into the low 90's and there is a small chance of more rain and storms later this afternoon or evening.  This morning I have a doctor's appointment to have my toenails trimmed.  Then this afternoon Pat and I plan on going back to Ruby Tuesday's for another of their buy one get one entree coupon mail.  That makes pretty inexpensive eating.  Scott did make it out last evening after we had finished dinner.  He had texted before we had finished dinner that he was on his way so we left the food on the table and he had a good dinner meal.  Pat fixed the pork loin roast and green beans and some smiley face potatoes along with some dinner rolls.  The potatoes were something we had never seen before as they were mashed but fixed in little round smiley faces.  It was the first time I ever had my food look back at me!

Joy, isn't it great to be able to do the grocery shopping online and at a leisurely pace and then to be able to add to it.  It has been several years since I went to a farmer's market.  Where we lived had them once a week in the little city park and they were well patronized.  It sounds like you were to have a nice day yesterday and I hope today is the same for you.

Mary Ann, that was an interesting dinner you had on Tuesday night.  I hope your appetite is back today.  Yesterday was Wednesday and was his day off.  I have done our Church pledge on a monthly basis via online bill pay for probably 10 years or more.  I think lots of people are doing that now as the offering plate doesn't seem to have much in it.  I have never had very good hand writing.  Pat has started using almond milk and likes it.  We have used skimmed milk for years. I try to avoid getting fries.  Ruby Tuesday's is good about allowing a substitution as are several other places.  Glad to read you were feeling better yesterday afternoon. Glad Tom found the money as that would have been an expensive dinner.

Patricia, that is a pretty strong wind.  It sounds like it is time for you all to see a little sunshine.  On the news last night they were running a story about a New York Congressman who has been charged with insider trading.  Lincoln was a pretty smart man.  Companies don't make large donations to politician and expect not to have their interests well taken care of.  I guess most places where there are mountains has the falling rock danger.  I know that is certainly true in Colorado.  I have seen videos of truck drivers on the mountain roads in India and in one the driver stopped the truck and refused to drive any further.

Carol, I am sure experience on the submarine wasn't funny to you but I had to chuckle when I read about it.  The women on board announcement was probably an alert to clean up the language.

Marilyne, I have a Boost type drink every morning as a part of my breakfast along with an granola bar and sometimes a piece of fruit or one of the frozen fruit cups I sometimes make with the Yonano machine.  I wondered if you were experiencing any trouble with the smoke from the terrible fires and see you provided the answer.  I have never been out on a diving board, high or low, as I never learned to swim although could get from one side of the pool to the other at the Y.

Joan, I sure hope the biopsy will tell the doctors how to treat Candy.  Her condition has certainly been going on for a long time.  Glad that Dan is making such good progress.

Mary, it must have been pretty impressive to tour the USS Missouri.  Did you get a tour of the ship?

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I'm sure you've figured it out by now, without me telling you, but today is Thursday. ;D  The weekly trash has already been picked up, and AJ just left for his 9:00 o'clock dentist appointment.

I'm glad you and Tom, got your "financial crisis" figured out. We had the same thing here a few weeks ago, when I gave daughter Sandy a $20 bill to buy me some groceries at Safeway.  She came home with the groceries, but said I forgot to give her the $20, and she had to use her own money.  I knew I had given it to her, etc. etc.  Long story short, she had folded it and tucked it into a small pocket on her jeans, instead of putting it into her purse . . . didn't discover it until later.

Larry - good that Scott made it to your place for a late dinner.  What do you mean by the smiley face potatoes?  Are then prepared and frozen to look like that?  Sounds like something that would generate some good dinner table conversation!
I always have either Boost or Ensure around here, for when I'm not feeling up to parr.  I don't drink it every day, but like to have it always on hand.

Patricia - If only your wind and heavy rain could be funneled down here to California! We need the wet weather to put out these devastating fires!  Unfortunately, we never get any measurable rain until November, so we still have a couple of months of dry heat to contend with.

wjoan

It is only 9"30 and the temp is already at 85.  Am so glad I do not have to go out in this heat.  WHEW.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I hate to admit it, but I had not decided it was Thursday.  I had to go back and realize voting was Tuesday, Aug 7 and today is the 9th, which finally brought me back to Thursday.  Tuesday was the 37th anniversary of our moving to this condo and the 8th was my parents 96th wedding anniversary.  Thanks for bringing me up to date because tomorrow is trash day and I don't want to mess that up.  I was OK on Monday and Tuesday and lost a day somewhere.  Otherwise my brain seemed to be working OK.

It is a muggy day today and I'm thankful for the a/c.  I've been watching for boats and just saw a Coast Guard boat go by.  It is so pretty.  I don't know if they've had a Coast Guard festival or not; Grand Haven always has one the first weekend in August.  My Two Harbor Boat Launch isn't working now and that is the more interesting of their two sites.

Joan, as long as you can stay in, do so.  I'd love to sit on the deck but it is 80 muggy degrees and I'm staying in.

Mary Ann

angelface555

I remember when I first became aware of places that considered August to be a hot, dry arid month. I had grown up with August being a sort of divide between summer and fall. With my birthday at the end of July signaling an end to summer. August has always been wet and rainy. However, the wind is a new addition. We used to brag that the mountains sheltered us from wind, but no longer.

Marilyne, if I could, I would send this all to you. I can't imagine the suffering and toll of those fires on such a densely packed state as California. I did remember in 2004; the smoke was everywhere, total acreage burned, 6,590,140 in the Interior. The air was yellow, low visibility and smelled of smoke both in and out of doors. They had several places around town where people could go for respite, and we were packed with fire refugees, and the fairgrounds were packed with both domestic and farm animals.

What we have now is unusual in the sheer number of days with 100% chance of rain. We had one low from Canada mixed with three succeeding highs from Siberia that essentially settled directly above the city. The last time we had this type of situation was in August 1967 when the entire town flooded. After that, they built the Chena Flood Control which was a system of dams and spillways.

I'm just glad I can stay home altho the barometric pressure is doing a number on my sinuses and on my arthritis. I've become good friends with Tylenol.

Good evening, this will be short, as I seem to be having trouble with my computer, it ask for my Yahoo pass word, which is so old I forgot what it was. So I have been a day trying to get back. Keith finally straighten  me out Tried to get in again and still having trouble

Marilyn and Mary ANN, so funny about the 20's,  Monday Keith was going out with a friend to lunch. I ask him to bring me back a hot dog and buy a pack of batteries.  I gave him a 20 but two days later he does not remember it.

Gloria, Keith is too young to have memory problems!!!  If he doesn't remember that you gave him the money, you probably did not receive your hot dog or batteries.  At least Tom found the money.  He told me where he placed it, but I haven't picked it up yet and I'd better - it's the only money I have until he takes me to the bank.

Hi Everyone. Getting a late start today as had an early morning appointment with the PA at my Primary Care Doctor's Office.  Late yesterday afternoon we had over an inch of rain, which gives us a little over 3 1/2 inches of rain in the last few days.  We are set to get to 90 degrees this afternoon and more chances of rain in the late afternoon.  I hear the yard people in the neighborhood and I hope they get my yard mowed and trimmed today as it has now been over 2 weeks.  The housekeeper is also here today.

We had a really good meal at Ruby Tuesday's yesterday that had two chicken breast so we were able to bring one for each of us home and will enjoy it this evening for our main meal which will be a salad meal.  The coupon for the buy one get one entree at the restaurant yesterday saved us $16. Other than fixing the salad I plan on the rest of the day being a restful one.

I mentioned the smiley faced mashed potatoes.  Here is a link that will show you what I was talking about.  We got these at Walmart and they were frozen:  https://www.target.com/p/mccain-smiles-mashed-potato-shapes-22oz/-/A-14759242  The potatoes come out of the bag looking just like it shows on the package.

The morning has gotten away from me as Pat came and and we chatted for quite awhile.   So I am just going to pass on individual comments. I have read all of the postings since yesterday

Marilyne

Larry - Thanks for the info on the smiley face potatoes! I'd like to buy some, but Walmart is about 15 miles away, through horrible traffic, so I never go there.  However, I do have a Target that's closer, so I may check there, and see if they have them.

I see that there are lots of the big boats coming through Duluth today, that we can watch.  First comes American Integrity, at 2:03pm, followed by Indiana Harbor, at 3:30pm, and finally Paul, will reappear at 6:30pm.  These are all Duluth time, so I'll have to remember to watch two hours earlier here in CA.

Marilyn, I saw where Indiana Harbor was leaving, but when I checked the map, the ship was idling at 0.0 knots.  A couple others were to go shortly, but same thing.  I did see a ship was to leave Two Harbors so checked that and saw it was leaving, but it was far enough out that it wasn't as interesting as those close up.  I did see the Great Republic go past in the near channel at the Soo.  Then I decided to come here and this is the first folder that came up.

It's been a nice day here today, some sun, in the low to mid 80s.  We got the trash out OK this morning and Tom was busy taking a neighbor and friend to the doctor.  Dot says this friend is not well but sometimes we wonder if she is hypochondriac too.  She has a 30-some-year old son who doesn't lift a finger to help her so she asks Tom to do it and pays him for his time.  The son lives with her.  She also has two daughters, one of which does help, the other does not.  A second son lives in Ann Arbor MI and would help if closer, but he is not.  All of her kids went to school with Tim, Tom and Terry.

Dot said she has had the sniffles, sneezes and coughs and I could tell it when I talked with her.  She isn't sure she will be able to go to church Sunday.

Grand Haven in busy with boats and swimmers.

Hi Everyone. We have an overcast morning but very little chance of rain later today.  We actually went through a whole day and night with no rain in our area.  I plan on attending a meeting this morning and then this afternoon Pat and I plan on going to Dairy Queen for our main meal of the day and I will pop into Walmart for a couple of things and that will be it for today.  I have fixed Pat's breakfast as she was in pain when she got up.  I will probably watch some of the golf match later this afternoon.

Marilyne, I would be surprised if Target didn't stock those potatoes in the frozen food department.  We put ours on a cookie sheet with foil and should have left the foil in the box as they didn't really brown very much and it wasn't too easy to turn them over to cake on the other side.  I wouldn't go 15 miles to a Walmart either since Target is very similar to Walmart.  It sounds like the boats are keeping several of you entertained.

Mary Ann, temperatures in the low to mid 80's are very enjoyable especially if there isn't a lot of humidity. I think you mentioned the neighbor whose son lives with her but doesn't help her.  That is a shame.  Was he the last child in the family by any chance?  I hope Dot doesn't come down with a full-blown cold.  Pat is still dealing with a cough from hers but she is doing better each day.

Good Morning Everyone...
from the cooler and pleasant,  rocky coast
of Maine.

I turned my AC off last evening and have had
the windows open and fans blowing ever
since.    The air feels so much better..
of course when it gets too hot for me,  the
AC will be back on.   I am hoping not
for a few days.

Summer is going by swiftly ....(as usual)....
I like it better in the Fall...except "you know what"
is right around the corner....

Oh well,  all is well here..

At 10 am I clicked on the Grand Haven link and there was a freighter going out the channel at Grand Haven.  I couldn't make out the name but after it was out of sight I moved the map to Grand Haven and saw it was the Kaye E Barker which I have seen in the Soo and also Duluth.  I think I have seen only one other freighter leave Grand Haven so it was a big thrill.

Good Saturday morning to everyone:  Same old - same old, here.  Weekends are always uneventful for us now.  I remember the old days, when we looked forward to weekends, and always went to the beach, or had company for dinner, or went on a picnic, a birthday party, a barbecue, etc. etc.  There was always something interesting to look forward to.  Then on Monday morning it was back to school and to work, and we started counting down to the upcoming weekend.  Just reminiscing a little bit.

Mary Ann, I did see two of the big ships yesterday . . . American Integrity and Paul.  However, I missed Indiana Harbor.  The schedule changed a couple of times on it, and I lost track.  It would have been a pleasant surprise to see the big ship at Grand Haven.  I've only seen sail boats and paddle boats there.

angelface555

I know that several of you are into golf. Here's another ransomware attack.

"Ransomware Hits PGA’s American Servers Days Before Tournament
The Professional Golf Association (PGA) has been the most recent victim of ransomware.  As their tournament is about to kick off in St. Louis, Missouri, the PGA has found all of their American servers encrypted with ransomware.  Meaning, all of the data on those servers is inaccessible by the PGA.  The only way to restore the data is through backups.  Hackers also offer to unlock the files for you, as long as you pay them first.  Although, there is no guarantee they will indeed restore the files.

Hackers have indeed requested a payment in bitcoin, a digital currency.  However, the specific amount has not been specified.

The data encrypted includes promotional banners and logos that were to be used for this tournament, as well as development work on logos for future PGA Championships.

Officials have reported the tournament will take place as scheduled."

Patricia, there are no lengths to which hackers will go, are they!  I have been watching the PGA Championship Tour, mostly on mute so I have heard no mention of the hacking.  Of course, the hackers know the top players have money.  I haven't looked or heard but the winner usually wins around $1 1/2 million.  A minor player had a "hole in one" today.  They're not unusual.

I had something interesting involving Kendrick this past couple of weeks.  The cat has been barking several times a day and could not cough up what was bothering him.  I thought it was a hairball.  Earlier this week I told Tom that he had barked long enough and should go to a vet.  He really is Annie's cat, so she said she'd make arrangements, which she was unable to do.  I was worried because I thought it was something physical.

When I got dressed this morning, Kendrick came into the room for his usual tousling and I left him on the bed and did my early "thing".  When I went back into the bedroom, Kendrick was not on the bed, but I noticed something on the bed and wondered if he had finally gotten rid of what was bothering him.  I saw a label such as goes on an apple or tomato and it was damp, obviously from his mouth.  He has not barked/coughed since.  Talking to Tom, we decided he got the label stuck on his foot and licked it off into his mouth.  It must have been quite far down because the bark was quite gutteral and as the label moved nearer his teeth, it became more of a cough.  I do think we solved the mystery.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, That's really interesting about Kendrick and the little label.  I've been wondering about his barking cough, and like you, I suspected a hair ball. The label must have been "glued" to his esophagus, and slowly worked it's way out!  I hope that's the case.  You'll know for sure if the barking cough stops completely.

Some days seem extremely long, and this has been one of them.  I can't believe it's only 4:30!  This extremely hot weather and the smoky air, has kept us inside for a couple of days, and I'm beginning to get stir-crazy!  Tomorrow is another day, and I'm hoping it will be a better one for the firefighters and for the thousands who have lost their homes.

Mary Ann

#9623
Marilyn, I haven't heard Kendrick cough all day and as far as I know, he's been within hearing distance most of the day (his litter box is downstairs).  He has slept much of the day.  I was going out on the deck early evening but it was still too sunny and warm to sit out there.  Now, at 8 pm, we can go out.  I finally put some seed in the hanging basket I have for his grass and now to keep it out of his reach until the grass is long enough for him to eat.

I've seen some ships go through the Soo but none in the Duluth area.  I saw a note that the Two Harbors Boat Launch camera is not working due to a storm and it will be next week before they know anything.

The smoke in the air must be depressing, for lack of a better word.  When I watch the Weather Channel, the fires are #1 in the news, then the rain in the southeast part of the country.  I'm happy little weather news has to be reported from here,  however, we do have and have had our bad weather.

I've been watching the golf tour on mute and it's been interesting because the leader lost a couple of points but has now recovered at least one point.  I think I heard someone say there are 20 players within striking distance of the lead and the last round is Sunday.

Mary Ann

angelface555

If you look closely at a cat's tongue; it's rough, and like sandpaper, it is devised to cup water and throw it towards the back of the cat's throat. There are interesting videos on Youtube showing that in slow motion. Unfortunately, that makes it harder for a cat to bring items back up which is why they tell you not to use string, tinsel or yarn around a cat as they can strangle on it. That's probably why Kendrick was having such a time with the label.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is going to be another beautiful and sunny morning with it getting into the low 90's this afternoon.  I am going to Sunday School this morning and then will come home and get Pat so we can go to Church.  Last evening she said she planned to go but that will depend on how she is doing this morning.  If she goes we will stop on the way home to get something for our lunch and if not, as usual, I will pick up something to bring home for our lunch.  I did watch quite a bit of the golf championship yesterday and plan on watching the last part of it today.

Sandy, always nice to get some of the cooler days and it sounds like you are enjoying them.  It does seem that summer is flying by quickly.  Glad that all is well up your way.

Marilyne, your weekends sound very much like ours.  Since we have never lived close to the beach that isn't something we have ever done.  We seldom have company anymore but sure enjoy it when we do.  Our social life revolves pretty much around our Church and that is where are friends are.  I certainly remember looking forward to the weekends and having a couple of days off.  However, now everyday seems a bit like a weekend as they are mainly routine, except for an occasional doctor's appointment. I am sure you would welcome a nice clear air day and can't imagine having to smell and breath that smoke day after day.

Patricia, I read about the hacking of the PGA and also that they had no intention of paying the hackers anything.  It sounds like they maintained adequate backup so that their files really were not lost but would just have to be restored.  It doesn't seem that any place is safe from the hackers any more and almost daily there is news of another company being hacked as well as governments at all levels.  I must admit I don't understand bitcoin other than it is not something I want to get involved with.  I read of people making a lot of money and then the next day it may be basically worthless.

Mary Ann, I just checked and the winner of the tournament today will go home with 1.89 million dollars.  Second place gets 1.134 million.  It looks like there may be second tied for second based on the ending scores yesterday.  I was watching when the player got the "hole in one" yesterday and he was really happy.  I see that Tiger is among those tied for second. Glad you didn't need to take Kendrick to the vet and you found what was causing him to cough and bark.

larryhanna

A few days ago Bubble shared the following two short videos with me and said it was OK to share them with you all.  I think you will find them inspiring.  This was an organization I had never heard of before.

Marilyne

Larry - Thank you for posting the videos.  What a wonderful father, and generous human being, that man is!  I admire him so much, for what he is doing for his own sons, and for  so many other disabled children.  Truly inspirational.

wjoan

Mary Ann, got a question for you......  am curious what is to the left and down  from the Cam where the ships come in and out.?  Whenever a large ship comes in or out hordes of people come from someplace where we cannot see to go watch.

Mary Ann

Larry, Kendrick may still go to the vet if Annie can get him in.  In the five years we’ve had him, I think he has never been checked for anything.  He certainly does seem to be much better now, more active and I haven’t heard him cough or bark since I found the label.

Joan, there is a park to the left of the canal and people park around there.  I’ll see if I can find something to show you.  I found it, but could not copy it.

https://harborlookout.com/ships#0

Joan, you may already have this on  your computer; it is the link to the list of ships and on the right is a map of the Duluth area.  Enlarge the area around the Great Lakes Aquarium and you will see roads and names of things in the area.  I think you will recognize where the canal and bridge are.

Dot and I did our usual Sunday thing and had our usual sandwich and pie.  We both like an occasional hamburger, but mostly like the Tuna Melt.

Larry, I’m going to watch the end of the golf match too.

Mary Ann
