Yes, I think the ship is in the second channel. From the back, it looks a lot like Paul?  I guess we won't be able to see the names of the boats there anymore, unless it's on the back right?  We'll have to figure it out from the map?

Oh, I like the new view of the Soo Locks!  Glad I didn't delete the link from Favorites.
Just watched the crane (gate?) go up and a tour boat go by.  I really like being able to "watch the action".

Sorry I missed the ship arrival at Two Harbors.  I've seen one leave but never one coming in.

Marilyne,  The NYC Harbor House webcam was streaming this morning but the NY Port one was not - probably because there's a cruise ship docked.  Check in on that one between 4:00 and 5:00 (Central Time) to see if it leaves.  Interesting to watch them turn around and start down the river.

We're supposed to get more rain this afternoon and tonight.  My cupboard was beginning to look like Mother Hubbard's so I "did something about that" this morning.  Surely is muggy out.

There were swarms of dragonflies in the "wild area" behind the back fence last evening.  Neighbor and I wondered if they were chasing mosquitoes.   Wouldn't be surprised if there's an excess of those biters after all the rain we've had.  So much for neighbor's and my evening patio visits.

Hope all is going well in the Bait and Tackle world.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I think this will be a more interesting site, but we've got to have patience because it will take a while to get the water in the lock.  I think the ship just in there was the Gott and, yes, I got the name from the map.  One thing, if the ship is in the lock and you want to know the ship's name, there is plenty of time to go to the map to get the name.  I think from the lock the ship goes to the area we used to see.  We won't be able to see the length of the ship, at least in its entirety.  At least it didn't take forever and a day to fix.

Mary Ann

Lindancer

Mary Ann, I do not know what I am doing wrong. I stiil have not seen a ship in the Soo locks. I have seen a tape and tha t is all.

Mary Ann

Gloria, do you have a  link to the map of the Soo?  If not, it is very helpful.  I'm sorry I did not think of you just now because two ships went thru.  There is a new location and I was trying to figure out if the ship was in a lock and kind of decided it was not.  Then another ship came in front of the first ship and by the time it was past, I realized the first ship was higher than it had been.

I'll get the map link for you in case  you don't have it.  Then I can mention a bit more.

Mary Ann

Gloria, for one thing, ships are not too frequent, however, every ship that comes from the Duluth area to go to Eastern Canada must go through the Soo; there is no other route!

A little pink circle marks the US Soo.  If there is a big green circle near the pink circle it would be a ship headed one way or the other.  If the ship's destination is Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors or places west of the Soo it should say so when you put your cursor on the green circle.  When it is a circle, it is in a lock.

I just looked at the map and about a 1/2 inch to the right of the pink circle is a green circle and it will go to the left of the pink circle as it is headed for Duluth.
Get both the map and Soo site on your computer, one after the other so you can switch back and forth.  It takes a long time for ships to pass through the locks because they have to be raised or lowered to the correct water level.  Lake Superior is quite a bit higher than Lake Huron.

See what you can come up with now because the Barker will be coming through but it may take a while.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Gloria, it is nearly 5 pm ET and there is a ship in the Soo channel.  There is a long brown piece that is part of a ship.  At the right is a superstructure, the living quarters of the crew.  You must have patience because it will take a while, but the brown piece is the center of the ship and will raise in the water.  The ship is in a lock.  The ship will eventually leave toward the left (west) to go to Duluth.  I think the ship will be there a while, but not forever.

Good luck.

Those black ships are really long ones, aren't they?

Some different cam views of the Soo Locks

https://webcam.erdc.dren.mil/soo/

CallieOK

Patricia,  clicking on this link just brought up a warning that the site did not have a security certificate.

BTW,  the "Paul" just came into the Duluth harbor about an hour ago.  Must not have been the one in the Soo locks.

Before that, I'd watched a cruise ship on the PortNY webcam as it pulled away from the pier and sailed down the river.
I switched to the HarborHouse cam when I could see a bridge in the distance on the Port cam.
I could see the cruise ship in the background and watched (cam was streaming)as it slowly turned so it came past the Statue of Liberty (visible in the distance) and sailed on past the webcam.
Didn't wait for it to go under the bridge because it was time for the Paul to be approaching the canal. So I switched to Duluth webcams.

I'm getting to be a regular GPS on these ship channels.    ;D

Lindancer

Mary Ann, thanks for all the help. I am having fun with all these earth cams.  Does not take much to amuse me

Thanks Patricia, but I got the same notice as Callie

Mary Ann

I have been unable to get any Soo cams and always get the Unsecured message.  Firefox takes care of things so I couldn't click on them if I wanted to.  I have trouble with Callie's links too; I'm missing something that prevents me from getting to those sites.  I used to be able to get them, but PTV will not let me now.

I kind of like the new cam shot for the Soo not only because it is a change of scenery, but we can see the ships go higher or lower in the locks.  A Dutch ship just went through and for a while it seemed like nothing happened, but I saw the tall superstructure was disappearing.

Joan, did the change of location make it any easier for you to see?

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, could not get it to work.

angelface555

For Callie, Gloria, etc. If you click on yes it takes you to the site and even the first webpage has a post on why it says no security certificate just as Seniors and Friends often have that issue.

Often if you look at the link address, you will see a http:// instead of the https:// which signifies locked or a security clearance. Often you can add your own s to the http which will then allow you to see the site. There is also an app that fixes that for you.

MaryAnn, if you change your Ad blocking to whitelist the site and refresh, you are able to then view it.

CallieOK

Mary Ann,  I'm so sorry about the PTV not letting you in.  I don't know enough about that to help but I didn't subscribe to anything.

When I went to the Grand Haven site it came up but a little screen appeared at the bottom and said something about not being able to show the videos on my browser and suggested that I " should get a modern browser like........".

Humph!  I know I'm old but I think I still qualify as "modern"!!!!    ;D   ;D

You may have remembered my mention of the five male kittens brought into the vet on July 25th. And subsequent foster care in Washington state. There was no sign of a mother.  And while the kittens, estimated at eight weeks, their severe eye and nose crusting due to an acute upper respiratory infection had caused other issues.

Developmental delays, starvation,(Eyes and noses crusted shut caused them to be unable to find food on their own.); and two of the kittens were not expected to survive, (Peanut, Tomato); which is why they held off on the cams.

Being kittens, after receiving food and medicine, they revived and discovered playtime. Afterall, no one had explained to them that they were disabled. Each litter given a theme and since there were five male kittens, the subject was after the Five Guys fast food restaurant chain. Accordingly, they all had coordinating names such as jalapeno, Peanut, Tomato, Pickles, and Relish.

After an initial vet evaluation, they had medicated eye washes, eye cremes, and antibiotics given through syringes in a kitten wet food slurry. Today they were given a second vet visit which wasn't as hopeful as we might have wished.

"Little sad news - Peanut & Pickles have corneal ulcers in their bad eye that have developed a hole. For both of them, the lens is sealing the hole but in Pickle's case, the hole is large enough that the lens is protruding out of the hole. Peanut's eye probably has been stable in my care but Pickles eye either developed the hole Monday night or the inner eyelid's swelling was keeping it covered but the swelling went down enough to expose it.
Neither of their bad eyes are salvageable. Pickles has zero vision in his bad eye and Peanut has light/darkness vision at best, none at worst. They have an appointment on Tuesday the 21st to remove them.
If their bad eyes are causing them pain, they're not really letting it affect their play at all. They seem fine in every other regard and tested negative on their viral panel.
All the other eyes except for Relish's good eye and Jalapeno's eyes have "standard" ulcers that will be accessed at a future vet visit because the vet wanted to continue to treat them to a longer session of antibiotic ointment for their eyes."
This is why it is so important to care for your pets and spay/neuter. Who knows what happened to the mother cat, there is no back story. Where they were at and how they were was a death sentence.  At least this way, they will survive and hopefully be adopted into good homes.

Hi Everyone.  It is another typical August day here in South Carolina.  It is clear and sunny this morning but we are to have a mostly cloudy afternoon and there is a small chance of rain later today.  Our main plans for today are to have our main meal at Ruby Tuesday's.  They still have a $12.99 three course meal offer that we haven't taken advantage of.  On the way home I will run into Aldi's for a few vegetables that Pat forgot to put on the Walmart Online Order.

Yesterday I did pick up the order she had placed at the nearby Walmart.  The nicest young lady brought them out and put them in the car.  She had a great personality and I came home and did the short survey that pertained to the service I had received and I gave her the 5 starts.  This was the first time I had done this.  Before I went to coffee I picked up the prescription for my very, very expensive shampoo.  My part was $56 dollar and the cash price would have been $350.  I am to use it three times a week for 4 weeks.  You have to apply it to the dry hair and wait 15 minutes before showering.  I sure hope this works.  I asked the pharmacist why this was so expensive and she had no idea other than the drug companies basically get to set the price.

Mary Ann, in about 1998 we went to the last SeniorNet National Convention that was held in Wilmington, North Carolina and they had arranged for an evening excursion and dinner on a good sized tourist boat down the Wilmington River.  It was a very enjoyable evening.

Bubble, I had never considered how the wheelchair could tun on a time as when I used to push Stacey in one I just made a circle and that took up quite a bit of room.

Marilyne, it sounds like you all will have to work a little harder when viewing the cams to identify the ships in the canal.

Callie, it must be fun to try to turn a cruise ship around in a river.  Sort of disconcerting how quickly our pantries begin to look bare.  It seems like we are constantly buying groceries and I think we should be stocked up for long while and the next thing I know Pat has made another online order to put things on the Aldi's list.

deAngel, I guess I just don't have the patience to watch the webcams very much although I do find them interesting.

Patricia, I didn't realize you could add your own "s" to the http link.  There is always something new to learn.  Thanks for that information.  Cleaver names for the kittens but very sad about their eyes. Hopefully they can have a good life in new adoptive homes.   I have eaten at a couple of the Five Guys restaurants but am not a fan.

Yesterday I watched the Soo cam to see the ship being raised to the level of Lake Superior.  This morning I watched to see a ship being lowered to the level of Lake Huron.  I wish we had the capability to move ahead or backwards, but I think I'll like this cam a lot (I didn't intend to "Camelot").

Patricia, how sad for the cats with their eye problems.  The reason PTV won't let me see Callie's cams has to do with flash player.  And I like having adbloc so won't change.  Before PTV shut the door, I used to watch the cruise ships come in or leave and it was neat.

Don't feel bad, Callie, I've gotten along without the sites for a long time.  I have never heard of anyone getting the message you did.  As far as I know, they have not upgraded the site - maybe the pier, but not the site!  The pier is supposed to be open now but I won't be one to walk it.

Marilyn, look at the map of the Soo to see what ships are going through.  This morning a cruise ship went by on the near channel.  I think the ship cut off the camera (like at Wisconsin Point) and the screen froze, then I got a big X in the center of the screen - so I came here.  When I finish, I'll see if it still works.

Sandy, I wish I could help you, but I am not using a walker - yet!  I am sure the day will come.

You may have seen this before (I have) but it is certainly worth another read.  I would like to use it as part of a devotional I will give for our Sunday School class a week from Sunday but know I could never get through it without becoming very emotional, as I have just now reading it again.

Two Choices,
What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection.

Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.

Where is the natural order of things in my son?'
The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning..'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt.. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. Athe pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.
Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball. The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.' So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

Mary Ann

Larry, I have a suggestion for your devotions - first, make copies of this piece for everyone who attends.  When you're together, announce that the topic is "Since you have done this for the least of us,  you also have done it for me".  Then give everyone a copy of the piece and let them read it for themselves.

It probably would not work, but it is a suggestion.  I sent it to Dot.

Tom and I went to the Score for lunch today and I had fish and chips which included cole slaw.  I ate about a half dozen fries (which come with instead of chips - actually closer to the English version).  Tom had a Southwestern wrap which he said was so-so.  My fish was nice and hot.  It was a large piece of cod and I put tartar sauce and lemon on it.  The fish and cole slaw made a nice lunch for me.

Tom had a call from a cousin this morning that the cousin's father (Tom's uncle) is under hospice.  He has had Parkinson's and has not been well for some time.  He is 84 and a brother of Tom's mother.  Tom is hoping his one remaining uncle will come from North Carolina.

Dot is still feeling the effects of her recent cold but she still does stuff.  Sunday we will go to Jan's former church for a ceremony to inter Terry's ashes.  Jan's present church has no Memory Garden.  She is Associate Minister at her present church.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Larry - That was an inspirational story, and I plan to copy and send to some friends who will appreciate it.  That was a good idea of Mary Ann's, to run off a number of copies for your Sunday School class.

Mary Ann - Fish and Chips sounds good!  In fact, all of your restaurant meals sound good to me - the tuna melt being my favorite. :)  I haven't looked at any of the cams today, so after I finish this post, I'll take a look at each of them.  The beach at Grand Haven is probably busy, and of course the Bear Cam is always fun to watch.  I haven't seen many ships on any of the cams this week, and none yet, from the new camera angle at the Soo Locks.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I got on the Soo cam in time to see a ship in the lock and it was headed for Ohio which means it would go down the east side of Michigan on Lake Huron, therefore, it would be lowered to Lake Huron level.  After it was lowered and started out of the lock, I came here.  The ships are in the locks longer than in the channel we saw on the other scene.  I miss seeing the bridge between the US and Canada, but I can't have it all.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

At 6:30 pm ET, there is a ship in the second channel (Joyce Van E---) going east.  It will be there a while as it must be lowered to Lake Huron levels.  You have to look closely to see the ship go down, but that is a feature of the locks.

I'm going to get me something to eat, then return to the Soo site.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Well, I finally saw a ship today, and it was the James Barker.  It came through Duluth at almost exactly 5:00 today, to a large crowd of people waiting and watching, along the wall.  I looked at the measurements of the J Barker, and saw that it was over 1,000 ft. - but still not as big as Paul.

Larry - I keep meaning to tell you that I received my Boll and Branch sheets a couple of days ago, and I'm very happy with them.  They are really beautiful!  I was so pleased when I took the inner box out, and saw how lovely the packaging is!  Certainly a nice presentation.  I can hardly wait to make the bed and see how they feel.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is another overcast morning and will be a mostly cloudy day.  It will keep the temperatures in the high 80's today.  Pat was not up to going out to eat yesterday so we just stayed home and had a quiet day.  I will have a pretty busy day, or at least morning, as plan on attending a meeting.  I also plan on stopping at Lowe's to check out the small freezers.  Since we only have one car now we have room in our garage.  The freezer in our refrigerator is upright and the shelves are narrow and it is a bit difficult to get some of the things out.  This would give us more options on buying frozen dinners from Schwan's and other places and not have to shop as often for frozen things.  I also need to stop at Aldi's for some fresh vegetables and a couple of other things.  Hopefully Pat will feel up to eating out later this afternoon.  That will be plenty for today.

Mary Ann, that is a good idea about making copies and handing them out to the Sunday School class and I think I may do that.  I would probably need to make around 30 copies as ask each couple to just take one to share.  I do have the laser printer here in my office that will make them quickly.  I think I would suggest they not read it until they got home since the ladies wouldn't appreciate having their makeup smeared while they are out in public.  Your fish sandwich sounds good.  Too bad about Tom's uncle.

Marilyne, as I mentioned to Mary Ann I think I will make the copies to hand out.  With all the troubles in this world it is nice to read examples of people caring about other people.  Glad you like the Boll and Branch sheets.  Pat has started taking hers off early the day the housekeeper comes so she can have them washed and they can be put back on the bed.  They seem to get softer the more they are washed.  I agree the packaging was a nice touch including the tissue paper.  They made a very nice gift.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, at 12:30 ET Paul is headed for the Soo from the Superior side but he probably will have to wait for a ship coming from Lake Huron so it might be an hour or so before he goes through the locks.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I hung in there, and Paul finally arrived at The Soo.  Then after another long wait, he was slowly lowered, and then very slowly, began to move through!  It took some patience on my part, but it was worth it!  Now I clearly understand how the whole process works.  I knew before, from looking at the diagrams, but this was the first time I had actually seen it happening. The new webcam shows things a lot better than the old one.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I think there's more to see with the new cam place (same restaurant).  I was puzzled by something in the near channel but never could see what I was looking for until tonight.  It was the lock for the channel.  I'm glad you got to see Paul go through the lock and yes, it takes patience to watch but now you know the purpose of the locks.

I just finished watching a ship back into a slip at Two Harbors.  In the meantime. two or three fishermen came in and one left plus a couple of kayakers came in - it was a busy place.

Our new deck furniture covers are nice, but they are heavy and require two people to fold them when not in use.  We will be busy much of the day tomorrow so I don't know when that will be done.  They are nice looking as far as rain covers go but they are not what I want the deck to look like most of the time.

I grew some cat grass and let Kendrick have some tonight.  I think he likes his quack grass better but that's in short supply and he'll get used to his cat grass.  I didn't grow much so he'll go without until new grass grows.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone on a very cloudy and dark morning.  It looks like we will be in the mid-80's today and a good possibility of rain.  We did get a very nice rain last evening.  Our timing was great as we had gone out to eat and had just gotten back into the car when it started to rain and it came down is considerable quantities.

We had a delicious dinner last night at Ruby Tuesday's taking advantage of their 3 course dinner for $12.99.  It started with a trip to their great salad bar and then the entree with one side.  Pat had the Tilapia with steamed broccoli and I had the 6 oz. sirloin steak and a nice side of coleslaw.  Then the third course was chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream or key lime pie.  Pat and I both chose the chocolate cake.

I am ready to go to Sunday School and then Church.  I don't know whether Pat will try to go to Church this morning or not as she isn't up yet.  If so I will come home and get her.  The rest of the day will be spent quietly and restfully.  If she goes we will likely stop somewhere for lunch and if not I will pick up something to bring home for our main meal of the day.

Mary Ann, I had to search to see what quack grass looked like. It is so course I am surprised that Kendrick likes it.  The cat grass grow very quickly and is something that you can keep growing all winter when the other grass is dormant.

Other than radar shows no rain in the immediate future, I am not sure what kind of day we will have.  It looks overcast from where I sit and Grand Haven was foggy but that will burn off soon.

Today we are going to put Terry's ashes to rest in the Memory Garden of the church where Jan grew up; her present church has no Memory Garden.  It will be at 11:30 which will allow Dot and me to attend our church and give us time to get to the other church.

This morning when I clicked on the Soo map, there were three ships waiting to go into the lock, all heading toward Duluth and/or Superior.  Since being in the lock takes a while, I decided to come to S&F and now I'll see which ship might be in the lock - the first one or a second one.  The first one entered at 7:30 am.

I liked the sound of both of your meals at Ruby Tuesday and would have been happy with either, also either dessert.  I think our Ruby Tuesday is about 15-20 miles south of where we live and probably would not seek it out.  Tom might, with friends, but we would not go there for lunch and we rarely eat out at night - that's reserved for Tom and friends.
