Three local cams, this first one is put on by a music store just a couple of blocks and across the Chena River from me, double-click the cam for a larger image.   http://www.promusicalaska.com/retail-store/

The second is also across the river and just down a ways from me,   http://www.newsminer.com/arctic_cam/

And this last one is of the Nenana river just down from where it splits from the Tanana River,

I just took a nap and I'm waiting for Annie to come at 4 pm to help me.  I am planning to put a hand towel on the seat of the bench; whether that that will help or not, I don't know but I've never used the bench before.  I do have the grab bar on the wall and I have one that will fit over the side of the tub.  There isn't enough room to keep that bar there permanently because the tub mat has to be there.  Rome wasn't built in a day and we'll work it out one day at a time.
I have a small bath and recently bought a towel rack that takes up too much floor space.  I may have Tom relocate the wall bar.  He's done more work in the last month than he's done in five years!

It's been a nice day today and I've been in the living room, computer room and bedroom today.  I think Tom is fixing something something for supper to have Annie stay tonight.  I'm not hungry right now because he brought home an extra chocolate shake which I have finished half of.

Patricia, I enjoyed the shots you posted.  They show that all of Alaska is not wilderness.  I still have great memories of that trip and I'm glad I convinced Jim to take it.  Little bribery!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I like your "Rome wasn't built in a day", attitude!  It's good to have lots of patience, when it comes to changes, or learning to do things a different way.  That's my most undesirable personality trait . . . lack of patience in any given situation.
I'm sure the bench will work out well for you.  My shower is not very big, which could present a problem.

SCFSue - Good that you survived the fall from the ladder! You mentioned here once before, that you have a brace on your leg, so you can no longer drive.  I'm wondering if you broke your leg when you fell?  Also, was the need for a pace maker brought on as a result of the fall, or were you having heart problems before the accident?

Patricia - I cannot relate to having that much rain!  Too much rain just doesn't happen in California, although with climate change, maybe it will?  I haven't yet looked at the webcams you posted, but will check them out when I finish responding to a few more messages.

Mary Ann

The shower and hair washing went well but there will have to be some changes made.  Annie helped and she turned on the shower before I got in.  Sitting on a bench is a lot different than standing on the tub and I have not gotten my hair wet at the beginning previously.  I'll have to give it a lot of thought and practice.  Having Annie there was a help because she wiped my back which I have not been able to do.  Change begats change.

Next on my agenda is to cut my fingernails; they're getting too long.

We've had storms for a few days and I've slept through them, or at least ignored them.  I have a small wastebasket to use for watering my outdoor plants.  They got a lot of water from the storms, so really don't need the water in the wastebasket but that is almost full.  I didn't check closely to see what my rain gauge said, but I think it is close to six inches.  This is for a week, not just one storm.

Tom should be home soon but I'm going to bed in a few minutes.  The shower and hair washing was was exhausting because it was a new experience.

I'm feeling about the same - so-so.

Hi Everyone. The holiday here looks like it will be a duplicate of the last several days and thus be hot and probably no rain.  I had a very good nights sleep last night and didn't awake until about 7 this morning.  After getting ready for the day I laid back down and read email, discussions and devotionals , as I often do so it was 8 before I left the bedroom.  I just plan on a slow and laid back day today.  We will be staying home all day.  It is unusual but the last round of the golf tournament is being play today and I plan on watching it later this afternoon.

We had a good Church service yesterday although our choir was away on an annual weekend retreat and the attendance was down in both our Sunday School class and the Church service as guess a lot of people were taking advantage of the long weekend to be away.  Pat did go to Church yesterday and then we stopped at Firehouse Subs for our lunch and I was able to use the coupon to get a free medium sized sub and also had a coupon for a free drink so it was a nicely priced lunch.

Marilyne, it sounds like your yard is not too easy to maintain, especially around the olive tree.  I don't think I have ever seen an olive year in person.  The worst tree I have ever had to deal with is the magnolia tree although pine cones come in a close second around here. I have never thought about how they dry olives and I really don't care for olives at all.

Joan, thanks for the explanation as to why your doctor situation in Washington is like it is.  I guess it is an example of everything we do like changing laws having unintended consequences.

Mary Ann, some days we just don't have many postings in our discussions and I guess that is what you experience a couple of days ago.  I generally only read the discussions and post once a day.  It is good that you try to have someone in the house when you take your shower.  Doing the shower and fixing her hair is just about all that Pat is able to do on those days.  I hope today finds you feeling back to your normal self as not feeling good sure interferes with what we like to do. Glad to see  the bath chair was helpful and you will probably soon adjust to using it.  Pat has several bottles of body wash, shampoo and conditioner and I don't know what else she keeps in the shower.  She got a small plastic basket to contain them as she used to put them on the build in shower seat.  My contribution to the basket is my bottle of shampoo.  You sure have had a lot of rain the last few days.

Patricia, thanks for the information on how those folks and animals flood out are accommodated in Fairbanks. Your weather this year sounds like a 50-year cycle event.  Glad that your city is now protected with the Flood Control Project.  Augusta, Georgia (just across the river from our downtown area, is also protected by a dam up river but apparently used to experience severe floods.  You writing about the State is so interesting.  We don't have a tub in our master bathroom, for which I am thankful.  There are tubs in the other two bathrooms in this house never to be used by either Pat nor I.  Since your building is for seniors I am surprised you have tubs in your bathrooms as they are very dangerous for older folks.  I well remember when you moved into your apartment where you live.  Glad you have rent control.  Thanks for the info on the cam going dark.  I thought it must be something like that.  I will check out the other cams you listed yesterday.

Sue, have you felt better with the pacemaker.  You were fortunate to have neighbors that were able to help you so quickly.  I think you learned a good lesson to stay off of the ladders.  I didn't move my extension ladder here but gave it to my neighbor who really had no business climbing either as he was in his 80's but he asked if he could have it as I had planned to leave it in the shed with the house.

Marilyne

Good morning everyone.  If it weren't Labor Day, I would try to see a doctor, but since all doc offices close on holidays and every weekend, I'll have to wait and hope for the best.  I have two or three things going on, that worry me, but at my age, a few days one way or the other, is not going to make any difference in the long run.  We can always go to the ER, but as I mentioned before. . . I don't have the patience or the desire to sit and wait for hours on end, and fill out stacks of paper work, etc.

Mary Ann - Looked like you were feeling better yesterday, and I hope that today you're close to normal.  The shower seat sounds like a good safety measure, but I'm not sure it would ever work in our shower?  Not only is the area small, but there is nothing to grab onto, to pull yourself up from the sitting position.

Joan - I was thinking about you last night, and hoping that you would post a message as to the MRI?  I am thinking that Candy probably didn't get the results that quickly, but will see her doctor some day this week?

Larry - funny how meaningless these three day weekends are to us, now that we're old.  Used to be a big deal, but now, just three days to be endured until things return to normal. (The "new normal" that is!) ha ha

Mary Ann

Larry, there is a small shelf to the left of the bath bench where I have bottles of body wash and shampoo and they were handy to reach last night.  Annie helped dry my back and I could take care of the rest.  She got my comb for me and I was able to comb my hair OK.  She also helped me with deodorant because I have trouble anyway because of my arthritic shoulder.  If she can come once a week, I'll be OK.

Marilyn, I'd rather go to to the ER than Med Center ER because if the Med Center can't help, they'd send me to the ER anyway.

I am feel OK, but not normal.  I wonder if I'll ever feel normal again.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Marilyne, the Doctor's office is supposed to call her with the results.  Since today is a holiday I doubt we will heart anything til later in the week.

SCFSue

Joan, I'm hoping you get some news about Candy today.  I'm praying her doctor will find a way to help her problems.

MaryAnn, my bedroom has a small bathroom attached and I when fell, my son who lives near me took the glass shower door off, bought a seat to fit into the shower and I've enjoyed the shower ever since.  He won't put the door back on until I die, so I have a shower curtain there now.  I do stand up with the grab bar when I'm rinsing my body!  The glass shower door is stored in my utility room.  My larger bathroom has a sliding glass door attached to the tub, so guests must step into the tub after moving the door.  I'm glad my son who lives here is handy with any kind of construction.  The entrance to the shower is flat, not elevated, and that helps, too.

BTW, I hope you're feeling better today.

Sue

wjoan

Sue, the office is supposed to call Candy with  the results.  Not today as it is a Holiday, but some day this week I hope.

Marilyne

Joan, glad the MRI is over.  I know you're both worried, but it will only be another day or two before you get some answers.  I'm keeping the positive thoughts, that it will turn out to be something that can be addressed and cured.

Mary Ann, good that Annie came over to help you, and will return once a week.  I know it would be difficult to ask for help from Tom, when it comes to showering.  How is Kendrick taking all this coming and going?  Knowing cats, I'm sure he's adapting, as long as he is in the familiar comfort of his home.

Patricia, I looked at your cams, and I did put one of them on my desktop . . . Nenana River.  So peaceful and pretty looking.  I'm wondering if I'll see any boats or people fishing?   I'm going to have to rearrange my desktop, and put all my cams in one spot, and label them so I can tell one from another.  Then I can cycle through with ease!
:)

Joan, I believe we're all waiting for news for Candy and you!

Marilyne, I put out the cams so everyone could see how soggy and dreary it is locally. If you look at the far bank, you can see all the paper birch that have had their roots undermined by the excess water and will end up as sweepers underneath. The Nenana is a sort of working river trail with float planes, boats, barges in the summer and for float planes equipped with skis in the winter for mail, food and other deliveries and sometimes passengers.

In the spring, (The reason for the cam); they set out a tripod and folks locally as well as worldwide bet on when the ice goes out. They have done this since the early nineteen hundreds, altho not to the extent it is now. I don't know about how pretty it is as its glacial with mud and lots of debris.

Larry, I don't know about 50-year cycles as the city had floods from the beginning, just not as severe as 1967. We have grown accustomed to several 100-year storms and weather events each year since 2014. Or I should say, used to be 100-year event terms.

Mary Ann

The best I can say is that I feel about the same.

Joan, we are all with you and hope a good report comes for  Candy tomorrow.

Tom is at a gathering for a friend tonight.  They are meeting at the home of my former periodontist who has Parkinson's and he's lasted a long time.

Hello Everyone.

It's been quiet week-end at our house. Anyone who had plans for an outdoor celebration must be disappointed. We've had very heavy rain off and on all day with occasional thunderstorms.

Our next door neighbors are at their son's on the east coast. Friday was their wedding anniversary and their daughter from Seattle sent them a lovely floral arrangement and a small box of chocolates. They had already left when it arrived so it was delivered to our house. (With the permission of the neighbor). I've enjoyed them all week-end on my dining room table.    We sent them a photo via cell phone and told them Chape had been eyeing the chocolates.  ;) They should be home this evening.

Mary Ann - Sorry you haven't been feeling well. It will take awhile to get used to showering with the bench but that should be a big help. Glad you have Annie to help.

Our master bath has a good sized shower (no glass door) but we need to install some grab bars. The guest bath has a tub which I haven't used for ages.

Marilyne- We always seem to need a doctor on week-ends! Hope you can get in tomorrow.

Sue - That fall could have been a disaster. Good that you had neighbors to help. I've had a hard time keeping my husband off ladders but he's becoming more cautious. He's had a pacemaker for many years and had it changed once.

We have a very good Urgent Care center. If you have symptoms of a heart attack or other emergency, they call an ambulance and you are taken directly into the hospital, no waiting in the waiting room. I went there one evening with abdominal pain........they did blood tests, (white count was high), gave me barium swallow and sent me to the hospital for a CT scan. Turned out to be an intestinal infection. If I'd gone to the ER I would have waited for ages (as I've done before.  :( )

Joan - Waiting for news of Candy's tests along with the rest of us.

Larry - Firehouse Subs are Chape's favorite. He likes them much better than Subway's.  I remember that you have a pacemaker and have had it longer than Chape's. I'm wondering if you are also what the doctor calls "pacemaker dependent", meaning it runs 24/7? He could tell when the back-up battery kicked in, which surprised them.

Patricia - I'll check out the cams. My part of Florida has had a lot of rain this summer but nothing like yours.

Wow! I've been "wordy" tonight. Hope tomorrow brings a better day for everyone.

wjoan

When I hear, YOU all will hear too.  ;)

Hi Everyone. It will be another hot day here in South Carolina with a low probability of rain.  My main activity for today will be a visit to the dentists office for my 6 month cleaning.  Yesterday was a quiet day as expected but I did enjoy the golf yesterday afternoon.  Pat made a very good cooked cabbage and noddles recipe with chunks of Kielbasa, chopped up onions and peas with olive oil.  It made a big bowl full of food and we will have a couple more meals from it in the days to come.

Yesterday evening our granddaughter sent us an email wanting to know if we would be willing to give her an early Christmas present.  It is a small computer that is really a tablet with an detachable keyboard that Walmart had on sale for the holiday.  She is working to get her GED and the work is on the computer.  She has been using her dad's computer but apparently there are conflicts sometimes when she want to work and he needs his computer.

Marilyne, do you have the walk-in type facility, here they are called Urgent Care, where the wait lines are nothing compared to the ER.  Sorry to read you were not feeling just right yesterday and hope you can be seen today.  One of the things we really appreciated about Kaiser was you could always get an appointment, perhaps not with your primary doctor but with at least a PA on the same day.  Here we have two of the Urgent Care clinics operated by our University Hospital that are here in North Augusta and close by.  One thing on a Federal holiday we get no mail.

Mary Ann, nice to see that Annie helped you.  You might be able to find a device with a long handle that would hold the deodorant container as sure many other people have the same difficulty with shoulder problems.  I did experience being sent on to the ER from the Urgent Clinic the one time I have gone to it as I needed an ultra sound that had to be done at the hospital.  However, it gave me a priority and there was no charge for the Urgent Care visit.  Maybe you will have a new normal.

Joan, I am sure both you and Candy are on pins and needles awaiting the call.  Anticipation is tough.

Sue, you are fortunate to have a flat entrance to your tub.  It seems I keep stubbing my toe on the threshold of our shower.  I guess I am just careless.  We do have a long grab bar in our shower that was a part of our deal when we bought this house.  The shower curtain was a great idea in place of the door. Good to read that you were feeling better yesterday.

Patricia, I did look at the three cam links you sent and could see how cloudy it was at an early hour in the day.  It sounds like you should have several of those 100 year weather events already done for the future.  No doubt there are constant changes in our weather and probably have been since the beginning of time.

Beverly, are your rains from the tropical storm that is headed to Mississippi and that area today.  I see there are a couple more tropical storms forming out in the Atlanta.  How nice to get to enjoy the floral arrangement.  Did you all avoid temptation and stay out of the chocolates?  :) I would certainly encourage you to install grab bars as they are very helpful and well could prevent a fall.  I also like the Firehouse Subs much better than those from Subway or Blimpies or Jersey Mikes.  Yes, I am pacemaker dependent as both sides of my heart are paced at least 98% of the time.  I will soon have to have the third pacemaker/defibrillator put in as the time is about to expire on the battery.  It will be checked again next Friday.

The purposely hidden costs of healthcare by the Wall Street Journal;

"The U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any other developed nation. It will soon spend close to 20% of its GDP on healthâ€"significantly more than the percentage spent by major Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations.

What is driving costs so high? As this series of charts shows, Americans aren’t buying more health care overall than other countries. But what they are buying is increasingly expensive. Among the reasons is the troubling fact that few people in health care, from consumers to doctors to hospitals to insurers, know the true cost of what they are buying and selling.

Providers, manufacturers and middlemen operate in an opaque market that can mask their role and their cut of the revenue. Mergers give some players more heft to enlarge their piece of the pie.

Consumers, meanwhile, buoyed by insurance and tax breaks, have little idea how much they are really spending and little incentive to know underlying costs."

Marilyne

Mary Ann - no messages from you yet today?  I hope you're feeling better?

Joan - I guess that Candy hasn't heard from her doctor yet today?  Let us know as soon as you hear anything.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

Patricia - Don't get me started on health care in the USA! ::) I'm not complaining for myself, because Medicare has been okay for me.  However, my older daughter has had problems getting the care she needs for her adult autistic daughter, and for herself. Long complicated story, so I won't go into it here.

angelface555

Marilyne, as you know, I'm no fan. I dealt with that closed boy's club for both my father and my mother and needed a lawyer twice to force medical compliance.

And I will not even get into my daughter's death due to their inability to listen to me over other doctors' notes about no medical findings and "hysterical mothering." Not surprisingly, after her death, all those doctors found time to send me letters saying they had lawyered up.

My oft-repeated "No wonder its called a practice," comes not from me but from a number of nurses.

Good Tuesday Afternoon...

I just got back from the hospital after having
a scheduled Colonoscopy and Upper Endoscopy....

Very good news.  The Doc removed 4 small Polyps
and the Upper Endoscopy showed a small Hiatal Hernia..

I am so fortunate .... Dr says that does not want to see me
again!!!!

Sure glad that is over and done with.
Oh by the way.   I was an hour late
for surgery....  (They thought that I had
forgot to come -   but I was upstairs in the
hospital waiting for them..)

A very good news day for me.

Mary Ann

I'm back and I think it will be regularly now.  I spent the day in the hospital getting tests and results.  The result was that I was low on potassium and they put a bag of it in me, took over an hour.  Of course, a lot more was done, but that was the reason I was so tired.  I have trouble taking my potassium pill occasionally because it's not smooth like the others and the pill gets stuck in my throat so I don't always take it.  Of course, last week I didn't take any of my meds except one night I think I took them.  So - Guess who's going to have to mend her ways!!!  Tom says he'll help me!

One the way home we stopped at Wendy's and got hamburgers.  I did call Dot tonight and after I read the report, I called Jan.  So had two conversations on the phone.  At nearly 9 pm, I'm about ready for bed.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, glad to see you back.

Marilyne

Mary Ann, good that you went to the hospital and had the tests!  Potassium is very important to us as grow older.  I wonder if they make the pills in a smooth capsule form?  I can't swallow regular old fashioned pills anymore at all, and have to get everything in the oblong shaped capsules.

Joan, I'm assuming that Candy didn't talk to her doctor today, or you would've told us.  I'm still holding the positive thoughts, and hoping that she hears from him tomorrow.

Sandy, I'm glad you colonoscopy and endoscopy were both okay.  How great, to get both of them out of the way in one day!  You'll probably sleep well tonight, after that long ordeal, and especially knowing that you don't have to go back!

wjoan

Marilyne, no word yet.  Hope he calls her tomorrow.

MarsGal

Good Morning.

I am not loving this very hot weather. It was still 92 going on 7pm last night. Right now it is 72. I got the front yard mowed on Sunday, but the backyard still needs done. Maybe I can get some of it done tomorrow.

Today, my sister and I are thinking of trying out the new Metro Diner that opened recently. There is some whining by locals about how the chicken and waffles isn't what we "like" or are used to. Metro Liner is a chain based out of Florida. Their chicken and waffles are a fried chicken piece with gravy atop a Belgian waffle. Around here, we do it the PA Dutch way: shredded chicken or chicken bits in gravy atop regular waffles. I hear Metro's portions are "huge".

Good Morning from the hot and humid
rocky coast of Maine.    Two more hot days
until the season breaks.    Or at least that is
what they are predicting...

We shall see!

I am grateful for my good news .

Joan I do hope that Candy  also
gets good positive news and is feeling better
very, very soon.

These are trying times for everyone
subjected to the dreaded  "TESTS" ...
Best wishes to all.

Hi Everyone.  It looks like today will be a carbon copy of the past several days with it being hot and dry.  My dental appointment yesterday went very well and no follow on dental work is needed, which is always what I want to hear from my dentist.  The hygienist told me of a fresh produce market near their office so I stopped in and got some beautiful South Carolina freestone peaches, two Heirloom tomatoes and a couple of ears of fresh sweet corn.  There prices were very high so it is not a store I would visit very often.

In a few minutes I am going to go to Costco to stock up the freezer and the pantry.  This evening we will be starting our Wednesday evening dinners at Church for the fall season.

Patricia, I am certainly believe that the doctors and PA's have little idea of the actual cost of the drugs they prescribe and the test they order.  The $350 shampoos that I am currently using is an example.  Years ago there was a sudden increase in the price of the under the tongue nitro tablets for heart patients.  When I told my doctor about it now costing $1 per tablet whereas we had been getting 100 tables for $4 he was in disbelief and got the he computer and confirmed what I was telling him.  The constant treat of lawsuits make the doctors terribly careful and thus the multiple tests.

Marilyn, had I not had and continue to have good health insurance I would be very much in debt as Pat and I have had some very expensive operations over the years and my pacemaker/defibrillator cost over $81,000 when the second one was replaced and I will have the third one in another year or two.  I certainly feel for your daughter and did she run into the problem of pre-existing conditions where the insurance companies would insure her because of her daughter?   Our minister is currently in a battle with his insurance company as he has been referred to Mayo's in Minneapolis for a complicated surgery that he needs and the insurance company said no they would not cover it.  He and his doctor have an appear happening today where the doctor will get on the phone with the insurance company doctor.

Sandy, always good to have those procedures over with and that was great news from your doctor.

Mary Ann, that is good news and hope you will now feel like before.  Getting low on potassium isn't good.  Can you cut your tablet in two to make it easier to swallow?

MarsGal, I would think gravy on a piece of chicken and a waffle would ruin both of them for me.  I hope you liked the new diner.

Mary Ann

My nurse at the hospital suggested putting a tablet (potassium) in a teaspoon of water, stirring it into a poste, then putting it in applesauce.  What they did for me, and I prefer what they did, was to break the pill into bits and eat it with spoonfuls of pudding, which I can do.  However, now that I see the necessity of potassium, I can get the pill down.  You do what you have to do!

I appreciate everyone's concern while I was gone.  Truthfully, I did not care if school kept or not.  Mostly I wanted to sleep.  I felt sorry for Tom because he my transportation.  Fortunately,  he can do a lot of work while waiting.  Good old computers!!!

I told Tom I admired him for how he could keep his commitments with so many interruptions.

We are talking Rollator, however, I still can walk.  Not OK, but I can walk.  I haven't ventured to the mailbox yet and I might soon.  While I look both ways before I start out, we are near the entrance and some people drive in very fast, disregarding the 15 mph speed sign.

I had a hard time sleeping last night, not because of the hospital activity, but we are like so many others with the hot weather.  It was 77 degrees out and 77 degrees in.  The a/c was set to go on at 77 degrees so I lowered it to 76 degrees.  The a/c went on and cooled us off soon and I was able to go to sleep.  But I didn't do this at 10 pm, it was more like midnight or 1 am, so I was awake quite a while.  i slept good after I got to sleep.

My meds cost from $25 to $50 for a three-month supply.  At the first of the year things doubled.  I still think that is not a bad idea.  Since the company provides my insurance, I don't complain.  I think I'm safe at my age where they won't have me pay some, but one never knows.  When I retired, my boss said the company had enough in its pension fund to last "forever".  However, that boss has died and I've been retired for 32 years and a lot of water has gone over the dam.  Damn!!!

MarsGal, how did you like the Metro Diner?  I hope you did because it's always nice to have a new place to eat.

Joan, I hope Candy hears something soon.

Lots of whitecaps on Lake Michigan this morning.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

MarsGal - I love the Chicken and Waffles restaurants!  The two that I've been to in Los Angeles and Oakland, serve fried chicken pieces, and a couple of waffles, with no gravy . . .  just syrup and melted butter.  There are none that I know of here in the San Jose area, but if one opens, we'll definitely go.

Larry - The story of my older daughter and granddaughter is complicated, so I won't go into a big long winded explanation. Basically, when my daughter and her husband divorced, she lost his good Kaiser Insurance, and he made no provisions for health care for his disabled daughter, once she turned eighteen. This of course included mental health.  She now has Medical, which is the California equivalent of Obamacare, so basic health care is covered, but that's it.  At the age of 27, my granddaughter needs much, much more.

Mary Ann - I hope you're back to normal this morning, and that your potassium is starting to move into the normal range.  Maybe you can ask your pharmacist, if the pill is available in a capsule?  Even a liquid could be easier to deal with than a dry pill.  Since it's mostly older people who take the potassium, I would think there would be something that is easier to swallow?
