Thanks, Bubble, for posting the picture of Kendrick.  He is reclining on the top back of the hide-a-bed in the family room, where Tom says he often finds him in the middle of the night.  I don't go downstairs so I don't see him there.  He does like to get on the top backs of the couch and one chair, but I've never seen him sleeping there.

That is the face I often see when he nudges me awake and we are nose-to-nose.  He's a good kitty and I tell that to him often.

Hi, Friends! First time I have tried posting from my phone.  We have only evacuated for two other storms since 1957 - Hugo in 1989 and Floyd in  1999,  but we just were not ready to cope without power this tme.  We came to Summerville, about 30 miles NW of Charleston. They will probably get strong wins and rain but are south of the designated hurricane zone.  We may not be able to return home until Tuesday or later.  Our daughter has to work at the VA all weekend beginning today so her husband will take care of AJ, their 20 months old foster child who is actually her husband's grandson. If things get too bad, they can shelter in place with her at the VA.  We will weather this. They have us in a 1st floor room and serve breakfast and supper in the lobby. We brought fruit and snacks with us for lunch. The staff has been so friendly and helpful to us since we came in yesterday.

Won't commit on other posts right now but hope you all have a great weekend!

Mary Ann

Johann, thank you so much for checking in with us.  We all have been concerned about you and Windell.  We'll wait to hear next week that all is well and that you are back home.  Your posting from you phone worked very well.

Just looked at the 10 day forecast and it looks like days will remain in the 70's  and nights will be in the 40's.

Put my comforter on a few days ago so will be warm at night.

angelface555

Good morning from a bright, beautiful, but  46 degrees Interior!  Farrah has eaten and is ensconced in her deck chair, watching for birds. I've noticed that after settling in, she will rub her muzzle against the corded drink holder on one side. I don't know if it is merely because it feels good or if it is part of the settling in as it seems to be a routine. The chair is against the counter separating the living room and kitchen, so she has to pull up sharply when she jumps up.

Marilyne, she does have the tabby M on her forehead although there have been changes. The vet believes she is part Abysinnian because of some physical features such as a thick neck ruff and the orange stomach with the remainder of the underside white. She used to have dots and broken bars instead of stripes on her back and sides.

But now there seems to be a solid dark gray overcoat with the markings showing up if you ruffle the fur. Farrah's stomach area and under her chin now has more white than gray as her stomach's orange coloring has a smaller area and more white now. She no longer plays on her own, and the zoomies are a lot less frequent.

In the medical article I posted earlier, one part was sobering;

"But it’s not just women’s health issues that doctors tend to downplay.

For instance, women with heart disease are prescribed less medicine and offered surgery less often than men. Women are also less likely to get treatment for conditions ranging from strokes to knee pain, researchers reported in Critical Care Nurse. Go to the ER with severe stomach pain? You’ll wait 65 minutes to get help vs. the 49 minutes it takes for men to be offered pain relief, according to a study in Academic Emergency Medicine. "

Also elsewhere it has been reported that childbirth injuries have increased and are rated the same medically in the US as early twentieth century levels. And more women are again dying in childbirth. One other thing,  https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/investigations/dea-drug-industry-congress/

"In April 2016, at the height of the deadliest drug epidemic in U.S. history, Congress effectively stripped the Drug Enforcement Administration of its most potent weapon against large drug companies suspected of spilling prescription narcotics onto the nation’s streets.

By then, the opioid war had claimed 200,000 lives, more than three times the number of U.S. military deaths in the Vietnam War. Overdose deaths continue to rise. There is no end in sight."

http://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-drug-prices-lawsuit-20171215-story.html

"The drug industry really, really doesn’t want you to know that it’s ripping you off with frequent and questionable price increases for prescription meds.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the industry’s main lobbying group, filed a lawsuit the other day seeking to derail a California law that will require 60 days’ notice before drugmakers raise prices beyond a certain threshold. The law, SB 17, is set to take effect Jan. 1."

Johann, thanks for letting us know you are okay!

I enjoyed dinner out last night. Good food, good friends and good conversation! Most of us had either steak and salad or halibut.

Mary Ann

Patricia, regarding the treatment of women vs men in hospitals, I really can't complain because this last time I was taken directly to a bed.  But I know I confused the poor young man who tried to interview me when I went in.  He kept asking "why are you here" and I kept telling him I didn't know except I was very tired.  Anyway, an aide came and took me to the bed and that was it.  I did not have any aches or pains, I just knew what was happening was not normal.  Six or eight hours later, I knew what was wrong!  My PCP had said he would call the hospital.  Whether he did or not, I don't know, but I received a lot of attention and care.

Johann - So glad you posted in here to let us know how you are. I've been thinking about you while I watch the storm news on TV. Such wild water on the coast already!

Right now we are babysitting my sister-in-law's dog, Barney. My SIL (Chape's youngest sister) and her husband live near Tampa and were on their way home from a month in Vermont. She had been having problems on the way down (had symptoms of a mini-stroke, etc.) so she went to our local hospital. She's been there since noon yesterday and they've done all kinds of tests. So far they haven't found anything serious and we're waiting to hear from her after she sees the neurologist. Barney was a rescue dog and he's missing them so much! He's such a sweet dog.

So far I haven't had any problem with doctors or hospitals here or back in Vermont. Right now I have a wonderful primary care doctor.

The opioid epidemic is terrible. It's especially bad in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Larry - I hope the heavy rains and winds die down before they reach your area. Looks like the main problem will be flooding. As you know, my cousin lives in N. Augusta also. Think I'll call him tonight.

Mary Ann - Kendrick is a beautiful cat. I'm partial to yellow cats. :) I had a beautiful long-haired yellow and white tabby. He was such a love!

Angelface - The quarter in a cup of water would be a good idea when we travel north. That would tell me if our power went out while we were gone. Right now I depend on a neighbor who checks our house for us.

Joan - Hope Candy gets some action from her complaints.

Mary Ann

Beverly, thank you so much for your remark about Kendrick.  He is a good cat and I feel bad that he is so neglected because I can't play with him and he wanders about the house - or sleeps, or checks on me.

We just got home from the visitation for Tom's uncle who died Monday morning.  He had Parkinson's for many years.  I was able to talk to his three children, but not his widow.  Uncle Norm was married twice and his first wife died of ALS many years ago.  I met the second wife at the memorial service for Tom's mother, who was Uncle Norm's sister.

Dot could not go to the funeral home with us because she had medication for her pain and she had a sedative while getting the medication and she's still kind of under "it" and waiting to see that what they did really works.

I'll probably be back before the evening is over.

Mary Ann

Beverly

Mary Ann - Kendrick is probably happy just to be with you. Animals are like that.  :) Barney (my SIL's dog) is warming up to us but is very happy to have his Dad here for the night.

angelface555

I have always understood that our family on either side was basically farmers, people of the earth and no wealthy gentlemen farmers or scoundrels among them. Or so I thought. My cousin who had last year, sent me a CD of family photos, tintypes, and daguerrotypes going back to just before the Civil War has recently discovered something new that is surprising. Our three times great maternal uncle was the leader of the lynch mob that hung Joseph Smith. Who would have thought?!

Mary Ann

Patricia, if you dig far enough, you'll find something.  My only claim to fame was my 3rd great-grandfather was almost the oldest and/or last survivor of the Revolutionary War.  At one time, it was thought he was THE last and oldest survivor, but someone beat him out.  He was three months from being 107 when he died.  My ancestors also were farmers for the most part.

I had an interesting experience at the funeral home yesterday that I think I forgot to mention.  I was standing with Tom, Norm Hooker's daughter and granddaughter and decided to sit down.  There was a couch behind me so I sat there.  A very white-haired man was on the other end.  He had absolutely white hair, mustache and beard.  I have white hair, but his was whiter than mine.  He leaned toward me and said, "Don't ever get old".  I looked at him and said, "I'll bet I'm older than you".
He:  How old are you?
Me:  94.
He:  I'm 84 - 10 years younger than you!
Me:  Yes.
He:  You don't look it.
Me:  Thank you, I've been told that before.

I may have told him he didn't look 84, but I don't know how we're supposed to look at certain ages.  His beard and mustache were trimmed neatly.  Nice experience for me.

I'm watching some of the hurricane coverage and it has hit NC.  So far not near Larry, but he's probably getting some rain.

It is to be in the 80s here today with sunshine.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  The sun is shining here this morning.  Our local forecast is now that we will probably get 1-2 inches of rain and winds around 35 mph.  We probably will not have rain start until late tonight or tomorrow with the highest chance of Sunday.  Our danger is from floods as the water floods the rivers and heads this way.  I had a medical appointment this morning to have my pacemaker checked but they called yesterday and said the tech, who lives in Columbia, is not coming over here today so I will reschedule it.  That is no hurry as it was just routine.  I plan on staying home today and taking it easy and think most of the chores I needed to do this morning have been accomplished.

Marilyne, I am sure glad I live in Western South Carolina over by the Georgia line.  It is the flooding that may be a bit of a problem for some places in our county but no concern where I live as am over 300 feet above the river.

Mary Ann, cats seem to like to be up high or over something that is covered.  It must give them a sense of safety.  It will be awhile before we get rain, perhaps later tonight or tomorrow and then more on Sunday.  By Monday it is to be clear and up into the 90's again.

Johann, so good to see your posting and read of your preparations and how well you are being taken care of with meals right there at your hotel.  Is this a hotel where the room open into internal halls rather than outside?  Thanks for checking in.

Joan, I like to be warm at night.  It sounds like you will be having very pleasant weather.

Patricia, interesting how Farrah's coat is changing as she ages.  Certainly disturbing about the quality of women's health care.  I have seen some reports of the damage that the change in laws regarding the drug companies.  It is obvious they own a lot of the Congress people and put a lot of money into campaigns.  These are not done our the goodness for public service.  They expect something from those huge contributions.  Anybody who buys much medicine should be aware of being ripped off by the drug companies constantly raising their prices.  The drug companies will probably find a friendly judge who will invalidate the California law. Interesting family background back there many years ago.  I don't think I want to search too far back.  :)

Beverly, sorry to hear of Chape's sister's medical problem.  Hopefully she didn't have a stroke.  I bet they are missing Barney just like he is missing them.  We should be fine here in N. Augusta.

wjoan

Adam <previously Athena> and his family are coming up for the weekend.  He said   they would be here just before dinner.  Not sure they will be at the Hotel just before dinner or my house.  We will see.  Will be good to see them again.  His girlfriend and her little girl will be  with him.  The little girl adores Adam and hangs on him like a glove.  LOL

Marilyne

Mary Ann - what a nice compliment, from the "young man" you were sitting next to on the couch!  I've seen pictures of you, and I agree with him, that you do not look 94 years old!  I also agree with you, that it is hard to guess someone's age, after about age 75.  Everyone kind of blends together after that, so it's hard to say.

Joan - I'm glad that Adam has found happiness in his new life, and now has his own little family.  It will be nice for you and Dan and Candy, to see them this weekend.

Patricia - I also have lots of those old military photos of my relatives.  One gr-gr grandfather in Civil War uniform, and a grandfather in Manila, serving in the Spanish American War.  Also a couple of uncles in World War I, and lots in WWII,including my father.

wjoan

Marilyne, yes am looking forward to it.

angelface555

I think many folks with the prevailing interest in ancestry have those types of photos. And it is certainly nice to know why you look or act the way you do, whose nose or lower lip or sense of drama preceded you or why you need to be on guard against certain ailments. I do believe that my great maternal uncle, the one who died in 1963, forgoing wife, child and many comforts to trace that side of the family, pre-computers; had to have known of the lynch mob. My great uncle probably felt in the times he was raised, to let sleeping dogs lie.

He self-published a book on his findings going back into the sixteen hundreds and the family's transportation from Ireland by the British and ending up indentured in Charleston in the seventeen forties. That was one half of the book with the other half begats. My older sister and I were listed but my younger sister coming later was not. He sent a copy of the book to each of the nine family heads in 1963 just a few months before his death.

That was where I learned that one of my disabilities traced back to a Missourian farmer with eight sons. He and most of those eight sons had my eye issues and he died in the civil war battle of Chickamauga. I also learned that as with most families of the time, I had relatives on both sides of the line. I think my great uncle's primary focus was on where we as a family came from and where we'd gotten to instead of whom we might have been.

Still, there are those we'd like to know about. I have a photo, one of many of a group of men, women, and children, usually lined up on a porch, all with earnest expressions, being recorded for prosperity. Except in this case, over in the corner, is one little dark-haired boy, holding a slingshot and having the most mischevious smile. This would have been in Kansas, shortly after the civil war and no one seems to know anything about him.

No one on the paternal side, admittedly not very close-knit, seems to have bothered with ancestry, at least that I know of. All I remember from that side is they were Scots and Welsh and came to the US during the railroad expansion years.

MaryAnn, you certainly look much younger from the photos I've seen and Joan, how nice to get to visit with Adam and his family!

angelface555

This little boy on his trying to make new friends is hilarious!

They’ve cancelled all sunshine for the Chesapeake Bay until Wednesday, but I’m not daring to complain, since the eye of Florence is right over my aunt-in-law’s rehab center as I type. I hope she’s playing Bingo and not looking out the window.
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Mary Ann

Sasha, I hope your aunt fared OK with the rain.  We have plenty of sunshine for a few days and the temperature is near 80, just lovely.

I think I mentioned that Tom's uncle died; the funeral was this morning.  I went to visitation last night but did not go to the funeral.  I think Tom did not expect to go to the cemetery, but they asked if he wanted to ride along in the limo.  Tom said he'd drive his car because he was going to Holland afterward.  The limo turned out to be a trolley and Tom said he couldn't resist that, so he rode to the cemetery with some of the family and he had the graveside service, a surprise to him.  He called me from on his way to Holland, after the service.

I have spent some time on the deck and the last I came in, the cat was nowhere to be seen.  I assume he's under the table which has a cover on it for bad weather.  I'm headed that way to sit again and enjoy the deck while I can.

Hi Everyone.  We have a cloudy morning and rain headed our way this afternoon, evening and tomorrow but no significant amounts and winds up to 30 MPH with a some stronger gusts.  They are having a street fair in downtown Augusta today that started yesterday afternoon.

On Thursday I did get my first of two flu shots and shingles shots.  I have to wait from two to 6 months for the second shots of each.  I will get my pneumonia shot a little later.  I didn't feel well yesterday but I did keep an appointment at Best Buy and got my iPhone battery replaced.  I also learned that I would be able to use the new iWatch by using the blue tooth function of my phone and the watch so that is back on the table.  After lunch yesterday Scott called me and said the radiator had blown on my Hyundai Accent so it went back to the garage but should be done this morning.  There is one more major repair to be done on it to replace the timing belt but asked him to wait until next month as the radiator replacement is rather expensive.  I did go to bed right after dinner last evening around 6:30 as my heart had been letting me know it was there all day and I was exhausted and in discomfort.   I did have a good nights sleep but still am feeling a bit down this morning so will skip my Saturday meeting and just plan on staying home today.  I will rest more and watch some football.  I hope to be feeling up to attending Church tomorrow.

Joan, nice you will be able to see Adam and his family this weekend.  How old is the little girl?  It is always fund to have young children around (for a little while).

Marilyne, I agree with you on people beyond a certain age becoming hard to guess ages.  The oldest lady we have in our Church is celebrating her 103rd birthday and I expect she will be in Church tomorrow.  Her daughter and SIL are furnishing the sanctuary flowers in her honor.

Patricia, to my knowledge I don't have any photos that go back beyond my great grandparents although a couple of my cousins have done a lot of genealogy work and may have found some. With one of these cousins some years ago we went to an old, old cemetery and found the grave of a relative on my mother's side of the family from the 1700's up around Knoxville and there is a town name Hall that was founded and named after a long ago relative.  I don't know how my cousin was able to locate the cemetery as it was all weed overgrown but we waded back through it and found the grave marker we were looking for.

Sasha, I hope your aunt-in-law's rehad center didn't have to be relocated.  I know there was a lot of that required with Florence and apparently the worst of the rains are yet to come in from offshore as of this morning's forecast on the Weather Channel.

Mary Ann, that must be quite unique to use a trolley to carry relatives to the cemetery.  Do you mean he had to officiate at the graveside?

Mary Ann

Larry, Tom is (or was) an ordained minister and a member of the Hooker family (his mother) and he said he was asked to do the graveside service and when he wrote that along with the trolley picture, he said he had to get busy and compose something, so, yes, I'd say he officiated at the graveside.  It would be much shorter than the actual funeral.

I've been watching Florence to see how close it gets to North Augusta and I am sure its effects would not be as great there as nearer the coast, but Larry and Pat probably won't have to water their lawn for a few days.

I have the Weather Channel on with no sound so I am not getting a lot of what they are showing.  I know there is more damage by the coast.  Right now they are showing Wrightsville Beach NC.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Larry, I think she is about 7 now.  They will be here for dinner.  Since I really do not cook anymore I gave Dan the money for KFC and he will run and get that for us.  They have complete dinners now so that makes life easy for me.  LOL

Marilyne

I'm going to mostly be an observer today, and not write much. I burned my hand yesterday, picking up a pan on the stove with a HOT handle.  The fingers on my right hand - palm side - are blistered and painful.  Too hard to do left hand typing so best to sit back today and read what others have to say, or just do one liners. :)

SCFSue

Marilyne, OUCH!  I've done that before and it is NOT FUN!  I hope your hand heals quickly.

Sue

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I'm sorry to hear about your hand; you must have had a good grip on the handle to let it burn like that.  I have no solutions, so I hope you heal quickly.

I'm watching some of the hurricane coverage with concern about Larry and Pat.  I am sure they will get mostly rain and wind but that can be bad enough.

The cat and I are batching it today since Tom is gone for much of the day.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Marilyne, sorry to hear that.  I have little 'booties' for the handles  that get hot.  Lucky me.      Hope they heal quickly. Hugs

FlaJean

Marilyne, that is going to hurt for a while.  Be careful you don’t get an infection.  Maybe you should get some of those booties for the handles that Joan mentioned.  My oldest also had some of those for her pans.  We bought new pots and pans about two years ago that have what is called “cool” handles, but I still touch a handle with my finger to make sure.

Lindancer

Marilyn, I am so sorry about your hand . do NOT break the blisters, as I have had two doctors tell me there is healing in the fluid in the blister.  Years ago one of the dumb things I have done is: the ironing board broke all of a sudden, and dummy me put out her hand to catch the hot iron.   I had some burned hand and Cyriel took me to the doctor, the first thing he said was keep that huge blister as long as you can, Also it would stop infections

Mary Ann a trolly ride, I think that is interesting.  Nice that Tom was able to do the service.

Larry, I hope you are feeling better. I could not get any short yesterday while i had my regular visit. As I Had rapid heart beat and congestion. he wants me to get X Rays of course they are not there on the weekends, Have to wait till Monday, as I am not and emengery

angelface555

Marilyne, Ouch! If I could, I'd send you healing energy. However, I'll have to send you healing thoughts?

I know that hurt, I 'm hoping you took a couple of inflammatories and took the day off!

MarsGal

Yowch, Marilyne. Not fun. Hope your had heals quickly.

I am a bit scarce for a little bit this weekend and probably the first half of the week. Barb (my youngest sister), Mike and their kitties evacuated from Wilmington NC and will not be going back down until the gov rescinds the evacuation order. I don't think they were in the evac zones, but their area is definitely without power. Since the neighbor who was going to stay and ride out the storm changed her mind, they have no idea how their house fared.

We all met at Crackerbarrel for breakfast yesterday, and Sue and Barb came over today to see my kitties. Tomorrow I may go over to Sues' for dinner. I think she is making lasagna. I need to mow some of my jungle first.
