Marilyn - and others - you might find this site interesting.  It isn't live, but it does have recent photos of some of the ships.  One showed the ship in action loading or unloading something.  Another showed a ship that had trouble as it was to go under the Duluth bridge and went aside instead of leaving the area.  I did not look far into the site because it seems to be long.  Paul is shown; the ships are not shown in alphabetical order, but some pictures were taken in August and September 2018.

Marilyn, I have long said that I explain things "clear as mud" so I'm glad I finally made sense.

Good evening, we arehaving wind and rain, to night we will have heavy rain, as the storm moves off the coast. Talk to my DIL and she also is doing fine, she just stayed in the house.  She said Panama City is about 50 miles east of them.

Jean, I am also glad to see you are safe and sound

Larry, also glad you made out alright, they said the storm when it reached Ga. was stiil a 3, as the wind were 123mi.

Mary Ann, I looked at the Duluth cam. and that was some rough weather . really looked like ocean wave rolling in

I don't know what map I saw, but I was sure Niceville was west of Pensacola but I found it is east of Pensacola.  I knew it was not on the ocean, but I see it is on some water.

Gloria, Lake Superior is huge and with heavy winds, the water does roll around.  I think the location and direction of the piers has a bearing on the waves.  Lake Michigan is only about 60 miles across and while there are big waves by the piers, water on Lake Superior has a greater distance to go and the action is different.

I should tell you, living by the ocean, about wave action!  Like carrying coals to Newcastle.

Hi Everyone. It is an absolutely beautiful morning here in North Augusta with clear skies and 53 degrees.  We are suppose to get up to only 74 degrees this afternoon, the first real day of fall weather.  Nothing particular on the schedule for today.  I took care of a lot of little chores yesterday and was really tired last evening and a bit draggy this morning so will probably lay back down for awhile after I finish here in the office and I get Pat's breakfast fixed and read or listen to my audio book.  One of my coffee drinking friends gave me a book on Wednesday.  Scott came out yesterday afternoon to take a shower before he went to work.  His electric was off all day.  It must have been on when he got off around midnight as if it weren't he planned to come out here to spend the night but didn't need to do so.

Joy, it is not likely that Hilton Head had any damage but probably got a lot of rain.  There was damage in our area from the winds with trees coming down and power outages.  That was a terrible Hurricane and sure destroyed many homes and businesses along the Florida Gulf Coast. I sure hope that is the last Hurricane of the season. I am more than ready for Fall and some cooler weather and it looks like we will be now having some cooler weather.

Mary Ann, that turned over train and the mangling of the roof structures of so many buildings makes one wonder if there were not some tornadoes in the Hurricane winds and rain. I am sure ready for our lawn people to go to the every two week cycle as it seems that they have just left when they are here and have to do it all over again.  Our HOA could certainly save a lot of money to go to once a month or not at all during the winter months. What is a wet burrito?  I hope you had a nice time at your retirees luncheon but sorry you didn't really care for the burrito's.

Sandy, glad to see you had a cooler day yesterday.  At least the warm weather isn't going to stay around very long when it does occur.  We are to go back into the low 80's at the first of next week.

Marilyne, I have also been wondering about Johanne and what they found when they returned to their home in Myrtle Beach after Hurricane Florence.

Jean, so glad to read that you got no damage in Niceville and found things as you had left them.  You were still wise to take the precaution of evacuating. I heard them say they weren't sure the winds hadn't exceeded the 150 mph since they broke the measuring instrument they were so strong.  The pictures are sure heart breaking as so much damage and homes and businesses lost.

deAngel, glad you were able to talk with your DIL.  Being even within 50 miles of that monster hurricane would be too close for comfort.  I haven't really heard anything about what happened to Georgia in the hurricane but know a lot of the State were within the disaster declaration.

Hi Everyone.

This morning I finally had enough of some robocalls I was getting that would not quit. I kept getting numerous calls a day from two particular numbers. I did two things: call blocked the two offending numbers and put in a complaint to the DoNotCall government site. It appears these two numbers had several other complaints against them both here and in Florida. I've been on the Do Not Call list since 2003 - a lot of good that does, though.

Yardwork this afternoon, I think. The sun has come out and it is to get only to 66.

Good morning from the Interior. My seven-day weather forecast says to expect nearly the same as last week and no snow at least in the foreseeable future. No real news here, other than a card game and lunch this afternoon. I had my rental agreement meeting the tenth and will have a rental percentage raise that I understand everyone is receiving. Some services cut, and prices rise as we move from the private sector to the public arena.

Mary Ann

News reports this morning said there was snow in the upper part of the lower peninsula; I know that isn't a record because I remember when working we had snow flurries on October 1.  But I'm not ready for snow.  It is in the mid 40s now.  I started to bring in my plants yesterday but my back gave out after two or three.  It is time to start again.

I am not getting on the computer for hours these days but I do read the postings.
Things got so far behind with the summer being so hot. Was also hard to get people to work on what needs doing. Still looking for one for the painting outdoors.
But now I think things will have to hold off until Spring. Big change on the weather. Got down to 31 last night and will be same all week. Warming up only to 40s.
Did get a call today and someone will replace the ceiling fan in dining room and maybe will clean gutters on porch. Furnace all taken care of. Has not stopped running since.
Just read in paper today that a warehouse is being built. Ready in Nov. They will need 3500 people to work in 3 shifts handling packages . Amazon must have hired United Parcel and the other carrier as delivery carriers. It will put a end to some of the stores at the big mall as  they can't get people to work there and even 2 Walmart have closed down this past month and other than Macy's at the mall the others have left. Such A Bergners, Sears. Big sport store. lots of small ones.
This is a University town and twin cities. only about 195000 in both together.. The new one is going to start out at $16 a hour and can work either 4 or 8 hours on choice of 3 shifts. Great for students also. 2 new bus lines have started coming in from outlining small towns.  Our 2 big Hospital take so many workers. Online shopping is now taking over Read where Amazon shipping was in the Trillions this year. The choice now for the big warehouse is between Chicago and Indianapolis. It will be needing thousands of workers. Should be no excuse for people to be out of work soon. Living on welfare. How the places are changing. It is getting harder now for college grads getting jobs to stay around the area.

Our teachers in all the schools went on strike yesterday in the local schools. I suppose that their Salaries will have to improve when the Minimum wage starts going up to $15 a hour. A teacher only making about 12% a year more. Back in the late 60s I remember people making min. wage got about $1.50 a hour.
Looks like rain and so got to head out to buy a new ceiling fan.

Getting a new computer end of month that will be W10 and so want to have more time to be on it. Spend more time on S and F.

My flu shot is taken care of for this year.  I went to Safeway this morning when the pharmacy first opened, so I didn't have to wait.  AJ also got the pneumonia shot, but I don't like to get two vaccines at the same time, so will get that one at another time . .. or not?

JeanneP - lots of nice stores closing here as well. One of our largest shopping malls closed last year, and is now in the process of being demolished.  Condominiums and office buildings will be built there.  Yes, UPS is incredibly busy, now that everyone shops online.  Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, was recently named the wealthiest person in the USA.  Now worth 153.7 billion! :yikes:

Mary Ann - Too early for snow, so I hope you don't get any.  If so, it probably won't last?  Do you get much of an Indian Summer?  Ours usually comes in November, with the temps sometimes going up into the 80's.   So far, no major fires.  We've had a lot of brush fires, but they've been contained and haven't gotten out of control. The winds haven't been strong enough to bring down wires and send the sparks flying.

Marilyn, when Tom and Sue were married and living in Harbor Springs or Petoskey, this weekend is the one where I would drive north to visit them for a long weekend.  James and Annie/Cate were young, maybe going to school.  Colors on the way up were usually beautiful and it was a great Indian Summer -October's Bright Blue Weather, I called it.  I have asked Tom to take me on a ride around here - if he will remember it.  Spring and Fall are my favorite times of the year because I like to see the earth come awake in the Spring and I love the Fall colors.  I notice trees in the Duluth sites are changing color; they're more north than I am.  Our coldest temp in the next week will be 35 degrees.  I brought in a couple more plants but they are heavy enough that I can't stay at it long.  I don't know that rain is in our forecast and I'd just as soon the plants don't get any more moisture because they're heavy when wet.

Sandy, I'm glad Michael missed you.  What devastation in Florida.

Jeanne, it is so sad to our generation to see familiar stores close.  Tom is a great fan of Amazon so we do quite a bit of ordering from them.  I bought the Instant Pot from them and I'm going to order a counter-top microwave from them.  If I drove, I'd go to Lowe's and pick one up.  But for us Amazon has its benefits - things are delivered to the door; Tom doesn't have to carry it to the house.  None of the stores I grew up with are here now and even the malls are emptying out.  The mall near us, which was a "nothing' mall to begin with, was torn down and Lowe's built in the location.  Lowe's seem to do a good business because it is the only store of its type in our area.  K-Mart is gone, Wards is out of business.  And so on!

I think we grew up at the right time in our country's history.

It is beautiful todayâ€"81F.  Larry put up a hummingbird feeder and we have already had several hummingbirds.  I am so thankful that the hurricane passed to the east of us.  I agree, Marilyne, it is time for Mother Nature to take a long nap.

I haven’t had a flu shot since 1965 when I lived in Guam and it was mandatory.  I’ve never had the flu and seldom have a cold, although I suffer a little from “hay fever” in the spring.  Larry always gets sick from flu shots so he doesn’t take them either.  Larry’s Mother didn’t believe in doctors and he never had ANY immunizations until he went into the military at 17 years.  The military made sure he got his quotient of shots and Larry ended up in the hospital for three days with a high temperature.  He had his last flu shot in 1965 also (mandatory) and suffered a mild case of flu.

Hurricane season isn’t officially over until Nov. 30th.

Mary Ann, my brother-in-law-law was born in East Jordan, MI and I remember many years ago when his mother died in the winter and the ground was so frozen they couldn’t bury her.  They lived in the northwest close to Charlevoix.  That’s quite aways north of you, I think.  Hope you don’t have snow for awhile yet.  When I was a stay-at-home Mom, I used to love the snow.  That changed when I started working.

Mary Ann

Jean, Tom and his family lived at Harbor Springs and I went through East Jordan many times.  There is a ferry across an arm of Lake Charlevoix at Ironton which is near East Jordan.  I guess I won't worry about the snow because I don't have to get out in it.  If Dot shows up in the snow on the way to church, I would go through the garage to have a dry path to her car.  Of course, I can always stay inside the house.

Tom misses the north country but knows the jobs are nearer Grand Rapids.  I read today that Grand Rapids is the fastest growing area of Michigan.  East Michigan is losing people but West Michigan is gaining.

It seems almost unbelievable that your general area was pounded by rain and wind and today you are at 81 degrees.  How nice that Larry had hummingbirds at his feeder so soon.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Jean,  your husband is putting hummingbird feeders out and I'm taking them in.   I think the ones who squabbled over mine all summer have left.   I'll put them back out next April.

About 4:00 I turned on the Harbor Point Depot webcam and saw a long ship going past the harbor instead of turning in.  I clicked on the map and discovered it was the "Paul" - headed for Duluth, due at 5:55.
Checked the Duluth web cam shortly before that and found "Paul" listed as headed to Superior.   A bit later, the map showed the "Paul" stopped about 3 miles out - and once again listed as arriving at Duluth at 6:....something (can't remember exactly).
Will be fun to keep checking and see if he ( is a ship named for a man still referred to as a "she"?   :idiot2: Hmmmm  ) arrives at Duluth or heads toward Superior.

Can you tell I don't have a lot to do today?    ;D

Hurricane-now-tropical-storm "Sergio" is heading for Oklahoma as it moves inland over Baja California.  Another system is moving in from Colorado.  We're supposed to have rain all day tomorrow and freezing temps by Monday morning.
I may be doing more ship watching!!!!!

Mary Ann

Callie, I hope when the hurricane season is supposed to be over (end of November?) that it is over.  It is interesting to watch about the storm, but so terrifying with all of the damage that happens.  I saw where Sergio is coming from the Pacific.

I watched tv for a while and have not watched the ships.  When I finish with S&F I will go to the ships to see what is happening.  I saw where Paul was to arrive, but it was during Wheel or Jeopardy so I missed him.  I think ships are still called "she" even when named for a man, but I'm not sure.

PS - Callie, I just looked at Duluth and Paul is anchored out in the lake.  It did not say the ship was waiting for another to arrive or leave.  It now says it is headed for Duluth with unknown time of arrival.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann and Callie:  It's 8:30 here, and all is quiet on all the Duluth cams.  As you said, Mary Ann, I think that must be Paul, anchored out on the lake. He looks very bright and attractive, out there where it's so dark.  It's hard for me to refer to Paul or any other ship with a man's name, as a "she", so I'll continue to refer them as "he".

The American Integrity, should be arriving in about a half hour, so I'll plan to take a look and hope that it's on time.  I think I read or someone said that it's the second largest ship on the Lakes, after Paul?

Callie, you are right . . . I don't have a lot to do, so "boat watching" takes up some of the slack in my day. :)  Whether it's on the Great Lakes, or the NYC Harbor, I never get tired of watching the many different ships, as they arrive and depart.

CallieOK

#10366
Marilyne,  I check the Duluth and New York cams every time I come to the computer and frequently when I'm on the Tablet while in my recliner.  Discovered today that I get the list of Arrivals/Departures on the Duluth cams if I'm on the Tablet but just get a map showing where ships are located if I'm on the pc.  Have learned to tap or hover the mouse over the triangles to get the names of the ships.

However, I haven't checked since I came on the pc just now so .......away I go!

(I was just being sassy with the he/she comment;  I will use "he" for ships with a man's name, also.)

Edit:  looks like I just missed seeing one come down the canal.  Bridge was coming down as I opened the site and the ship is going across the harbor now.  There are three big green circles in the harbor on the map. One is "Paul" but it still says "destination Superior".

Marilyne

Callie - I hope you were still watching . . . it was Paul, who came through the canal at 9:15, my time, which would have been 11:15 in Duluth.  (Not sure of your time?)  Anyway, it was a nice surprise to see Paul!  So that must be American Integrity, sitting out there in the lake, with all the bright lights?  They surely do have a mixed up schedule today! :-\

Joy

Good morning.  Too early for anything to be happening.  Not sure what I will get into today.  Since it is Saturday, it will be a very quiet day here where I live.

I just wanted to say a quick good morning to the early friends . I will check back later.  Right now, I will read for a while and then I am sure a few zzzzz's will show up.

Mary Ann

Well, I'm up but I'm not sure about atem.  I got up about 6:00 am, computed, then went back to bed about 7:45, got up again about 8:45, showered and washed my hair and here I am again at 9:40.

After I finish S&F, I'll go boat watching.  Lake Michigan looked a bit rough, but not as much as during the week when it had whitecaps all over the screen.

I have nothing planned for the day and I usually don't but I will find something to do.  I had most of my plants brought in from the deck and when Tom got home, he brought in the rest.  I probably will relocate a couple of them that are light enough for me to handle.  Those that are too heavy will stay where they are.

It is a lovely, sunny day but my nearby thermometer reads 40 degrees.  Brrr.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is going to be another gorgeous day here in South Carolina only getting up to about 75 degrees.  It is going to be a nice day for those attending college football games in the area. I am feeling much better this morning and looking forward to a good day.  I plan on attending a meeting this morning and perhaps stopping to get a haircut and a brief stop at Aldi's to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables. Yesterday was pretty much a lost day as had no energy, certainly nothing to write about.

Joy, I hope you enjoy your quiet Saturday and enjoy your reading and a few zzzzz's.

Callie, you peaked my curiosity for as I did a quick Google search an ship naming and found some interesting information.  One place said: I think all machines are “she’s”. Airplanes, ships, cars, motorcycles. You never hear them referred to as “he’s” even if they have male names.   Another one (and I really like this one) said:  The ship is referred to “she” due to, it takes a long time for the ship to look decked out for inspections and cost a lot of money for up keep specially if “she” is too old. It’s like a woman, we spend a lot of money to look good for men and will go such length to have a facelift and all. Finally:  Even when ships stopped being given feminine names they were still referred to as 'she', but basically this analogy was due to a captain's love for his ship. "Shes a fine ship, Captain" etc.  We just refilled our hummingbird feeder yesterday but don't know whether there are still hummingbirds in the area or not.  I guess if the food level goes down we will know that they all haven't left yet.  If you are interested there is a lot of information on how hummingbirds migrate.  I seem to be in a mood to look things up this morning.  Hummingbirds do not migrate on the backs of geese. This is a common myth started by the pilgrims who didn't know any better at the time. Geese fly a different route than hummingbirds and have different needs.

Mary Ann, not nice to think that we have another six weeks with possible hurricanes.  I haven't heard of anything else out in the ocean at this time have you? I think we have ferried our car only one time in our lives and I can't even remember where that was.

Jean, my wife can sit in her easy chair and look through a window in front of her and see the hummingbird feeder outside and really enjoys it.  I have never been bothered by flu shots and have taken them for years. Growing up we seldom saw a doctor or a dentist as money was tight and the old remedies seemed to work fine.

Marilyne, do you only have to get one flu shot?  Here for seniors they give two shots and the same with the shingles shot.  I still have to get the second of both of them as well as the pneumonia shot.  Jeff Bezos is not only the richest man in the USA but from a little searching I just did he is the richest man in the world.  He is so rich that when the stock for Amazon fell two days ago he lost $10 billion dollars in 24 hours.  All of that wealth started out of a simple book selling website a few years ago.  Glad you are not having any major fires in your area.

Sandy, glad to see it was cooler up your way as know you enjoy that more than the warmer weather.  Glad you missed any impact from the Hurricane Michael.

JeanneP, it is certainly cool up your way.  Is this a United Parcel warehouse being built that will be hiring so many?  I am shocked that two Walmart's have closed.  I did read a couple of days ago that Sears was preparing for bankruptcy. I hadn't heard that Amazon was down to two places for their new second headquarters.  It is a shame that our teachers are so poorly paid in many places.

Patricia, I hope you enjoyed the card game and lunch yesterday.  That makes a nice end to the week.  Sorry about the raise in your rent.

MarsGal, this seems to be my morning for looking things up but I was remembering that the "Do Not Call" list had some limitations.  Here is what I found: The national "do-not-call" list does not protect consumers from every type of unwanted phone call. Political organizations, charities and telephone surveyors are free to make unsolicited calls without receiving a penalty, as are any companies or their subsidiaries you may have had a previous business relationship with.  I haven't had much luck with call blocking either as they seem to have unlimited telephone number to use to call for political calls.  I don't answer any call unless it is a local number or a name is shown.  Otherwise, if they don't leave a message I do not call back.

Mary Ann

Larry, that is interesting about ships being called “she”.  I’ve always heard it that way.

We have a nice day started, but we will only be in the 50s.  When I first looked at my thermometer, it read 38 degrees and now it’s all the way to 42 degrees.

Larry, before the Big Mac (Mackinac Bridge) was opened in 1957, the only way to get to the UP was by ferry.  The Ironton ferry is nothing compared to the big ships that ferried people and vehicles from one peninsula to the other before 1957.  Only about eight vehicles can get on the Ironton ferry whereas hundreds got on the Straits ferries.

https://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2016/05/post_607.html

The link is to an article about several of the ferries.  The Vacationland was the last and most modern.  At the dock, the back end of the ferry would be open and we’d drive into the boat.  When the boat was full we’d take off.  We could not stay in the vehicle but had to get out and go up on deck.  One they did not show was the Powahtan, but that was not really a ferry, but did take vehicles across the Straits.

One ship that is still in operation on Lake Michigan is the Badger which goes from Ludington MI to Manitowoc WI.  One year on a tour, we had a woman drive our bus and I think she took some flak from men truck drivers as to whether or not she could drive the bus onto the boat.  She did beautifully.

Was “Do Not Call” limited in time?  Maybe five years?  With Caller ID, if I don’t recognize the name or number, I don’t answer the phone.  One odd thing is that Dot is with Comcast and her number shows up as “unavailable”.  One time I answered and it was a political or charity call and I hung up immediately; it was not Dot!

CallieOK

Good Morning,

Marilyne,  the map showed American Integrity "somewhere" in the harbor but the picture was too dark for me to pick out any other ships.   I agree that the schedule was all mixed up.

Larry,    :-X  on one of the reasons ships are called "she".   ;D    I'd never heard about hummingbirds migrating on the backs of geese.  Hadn't thought about it - but I haven't heard any geese going over yet this year.  (Of course, that could be due to my hearing problems having increased).

It's a gloomy morning in central Oklahoma.   #1son/dil had planned a guided fishing trip at Lake Texoma but it was cancelled by the company due to weather and high water.  #1son/dil will be home today from their annual scuba diving trip with a group of friends.  They went to Cozumel this year and he sent a pic of the group enjoying a moonlight/torch lit dinner on the beach last night.

I don't answer unidentified calls, either.  Problem is that several friends' numbers are listed as "Out of Area" or are under the name of their son or daughter and I can't remember all the numbers.

MaryTX

Good morning...

Callie, "Sergio" has already made his appearance here :(.  By the time he leaves Tuesday, we will have ended up with 5-6 more inches of rain and will have skipped Fall and gone right into December temps - low 40s for highs and 30s for lows. Glad we went to Sulphur last weekend even with the tornado.

Several of you have mentioned getting your flu and pneumonia shots.  I believe it was Larry who mentioned two flu shots.  Here they give seniors one high dose Fluzone shot.  Also is there a new pneumonia shot?

I have the original flu shot in 1995 that was suppose to be lifetime.  Then in 2005, they said no lifetime only good for five years.  I had a third shot in 2013.  In 2015 they came out with "Prevnar 13" which is suppose to protect 13 new strains that weren't covered before.  They don't seem to take well on me as I have been hospitalized three times for pneumonia over the years.  My COPD might have something to do with that tho.  I had the first Shingles shot in 2012 and will get the second of the new shot in a couple of weeks.  As I mentioned to Larry, I have a deep seated aversion of needles but....... ;D.

Our internet, TV and cell service have been off and on for the last week and they said our Uverse cables have outlived their usefulness so will be having fiber optic service put in which I guess entails rewiring the entire house. I hope they get it done quick as I will have to keep a 13 year old and antisocial  Black Lab and a Golden Retriever who loves everyone corralled :).

Have a good weekend.

Marilyne

Callie -  it was a pleasant sight to see Paul arriving last night.  There were a dozen or more people at the canal wall to welcome him, which surprised me, as it was pretty late in Duluth.  In thinking about it . . . 11:15 is not that late on a Friday night.  Today I'll spend most of my webcam time, watching the NYC Harbor.  Saturday seems to be the best day to see those huge cruise ships, along with lots of beautiful  yachts, belonging to to "rich and famous"! :D

Larry - We only have to get the flu vaccine in one shot per year.  AJ had two shots yesterday, as he also chose to get the pneumonia vaccine at the same time.  I was not feeling very well when I went to bed last night.  A headache, as well as an overall feeling of not being 100 percent. I had a hard time sleeping, and was up and down all night.  I'm thinking it was the shot that knocked me out a little, but fortunately, I'm feeling fine this morning.  AJ had no reaction.

Mary Ann - I'd love to see the "Big Mac", and also the Mackinac Island webcams.  They're listed to the side of the Soo cams, but they never show for me.  Can you see them?  As for the problem of junk calls, we never answer our phone, but always let it go to the answering machine. (unless we recognize the name). However, here are some people who prefer to not have their names showing on caller ID, so sometimes "Unvailable", or "Unknown Caller", is actually someone you do want to talk to.  If I don't recognize the number on those, I wait for a message.  Usually there is none. After I hit Post on this message, I'll take a look at your link about the ferries.

I have been watching the Hillside cam where they are erecting a conical structure, very tall.  I can't see the top of it because it is against the ground across the water.  Another structure nearby makes me wonder if the area is a park, but this one they are putting up looks as if it might be for communications.

I saw Paul leave, or I saw the tail end of the ship, but I waited a while and Joyce came in.  I don't think others are scheduled for some time.

Marilyn, the above link is to a lot of Great Lakes cams and I think Big Mac is at or near the top.  It isn't as famous as the Golden Gate Bridge, but I think it is as long, if not longer.  (I clicked on the bridge cam from St Ignace and got nothing, but I clicked on Home and a picture of the bridge did come up.  If you want to read about the bridge, you'll have to put "Mackinac Bridge" in the search line.

Good morning from the Interior where the weather remains the same, (forties and fifties for highs and thirties and twenties for lows.); as do Farrah and me.

My card game and lunch was very nice yesterday. I won an entire pack of macaroons which doesn't happen very often if at all. The guys gamble with cash while we women do so with baked goods which is much more cutthroat, especially if homemade fudge is on the table!

MaryAnn, that wonderful surviving kitten story might do well in the Pet discussion? I really wish more folks with pets would drop in. In the past SeniorNet Pet discussion, it was all about dogs and we have none posting now. I know some folks have parrots and those would be nice to hear about.

I had my one and only flu shot in 2006. I had never had the flu but Sears at the time was pushing all employees to get the injection. The evening of the shot I came down with a horrible nine-day run of flu with actual chills running up and down my arms and legs, fevers and generally the worst I have ever been. It might have been a dead virus, but mine was alive enough to do considerable expense and damage. Of course, Sears only paid for five days of sick leave even tho they promoted the shot. Since then I have never had another flu shot or a case of the flu.

Patricia - I'm pretty sure there were separate Dog and Cat folders, in the old Senior Net.  I remember some of the people who posted in the cat discussion, and also recall that it was very busy . . . continuous messages, comments, helpful advice, etc.
Do you remember Marjorie and Purple Sage?  Also Sasha posted there a lot.  Many other "cat people" but I can't remember them now, because most did not join S&F.

When Pat first opened Seniors and Friends, I don't remember if there were separate dog and cat folders there?  When we had the big crash in 2016, there was only Animal Shelter left, and as you know, it was totally neglected, until fairly recently, when the cat folder was opened.  It would be nice if one of the dog owners, would open a dog folder, but I don't think it will happen. People tend to stay only in one or two folders where they feel comfortable.

Too bad that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., destroyed the original concept of the message board.  Now there are very few left with a variety of boards to post on, like S&F.

Mary Ann, I just saw your question about the Do No Call list. Originally, you had to relist your phone number every three years or so. They changed that to permanently unless you de-list it yourself. You can check your number to see if you are already listed and it is easy to file a complaint. https://www.donotcall.gov/
