Hi!!  Another day, another hi/message.  I did want to thank everyone for noticing my absence, and then my return.

Marilyne, it was my pleasure to contact Joan's son.  I, of course, did not know she was missing.  Her daughter Candy also messaged me in Facebook.

Hi backatcha Angelface.   :hello:  I think about you often as I have gotten interested in the Alaska based TV shows.  Interesting how those people continue to survive thru the Alaskan winters.

Hi Lindancer, good to see you still in here & contributing.  Danny & I also got our new SS cards a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Beverly - we see each other every so often on Facebook.  Good to see 'old' familiar names.

Hi Larry, I will try to be more visible in here.  Good to see you and Pat are still doing okay.

Y'all have a great day now, ya hear?

shirleyn.

Marilyne

Hi Shirley! :hello:
I hope that you and Danny, and everyone else who posts in here (including Joan) will have a nice relaxing weekend.

Hello Beverly
Good to see you posting here again.  Please return often and tell us what you're doing.

Mary Ann - I hope that Dot gets some relief today, from her pain.  Sciatica is a real bummer, and takes a long time to go away.  I've had bouts with it over the past five e years or so, and those spasms are totally debilitating.  The only good news, is that it does suddenly go away!  The bad news is that it eventually comes back.
The funeral you may be attending today, sounds like an especially sad one.  The women was only 45 years old, which is still so very young.

Mary Ann

Tom and I are leaving for lunch momentarily but Dot and I are not going to the funeral.  I can still make up my mind, but Dot's doctor told her to not leave the house today so that is a big disappointment to her.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

So sorry to hear about Joan.  Sure hope her recovery goes well.  We will miss hearing from her.  It is good that Dan and Candy are close by and can make sure things are going well in her recovery.

We are having a lovely day.  The weather is cooling and we are starting our best season.

angelface555

Good morning from the Interior! Yesterday was an absolute lovely sunshiney day. Cloudless blue skies. beautiful and perhaps our last hurrah before winter. I have a lunch this afternoon that may be postponed.

Marilyne

If all goes according to schedule, "Paul", will be departing in about 20 minutes.  That is 4:15 Duluth time, so there should be a big crowd there for a send-off.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  my schedule said Paul departing at 5:00 Duluth time.  Map showed he was moored at Superior not Duluth .  ?????
Have you sen the huge British aircraft carrier moored in the middle of New York Harbor?  Impressive!  Disney cruise ship on its was now.  Harbor cam may switch to it.

Edit at 4:57 Oklahoma time.  Both ships on Harbor cam!    Wow!,,,

Mary Ann

Marilyn, Paul's departure time was just changed to 5:45 CDT, 3:45 your time and 6:45 my time.  It may be more convenient for you, but it's in the middle of a TV program for me.  I may or may not see it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Callie - I finally saw the Statue of Liberty, for the first time!  I just sat here for a long time, and watched that beautiful Disney Cruise ship.  I called AJ in to see the British Aircraft carrier, but it was not on the cam, or the other cam I tried.  He loves anything military, so I'll keep checking until I see it.

Mary Ann - it's only 3:30 here right now, so I have plenty of time to watch for Paul.  Seems that his arrival or departure time is constantly being moved back, no matter the time of day.  I don't think I've ever seen him come or go on schedule?

Mary Ann

Marilyn, Paul is in the Harbor right now, on his/her way out.  I watched as they changed the departure time, taking off a minute each time.

I hope you check back occasionally so you do catch the departure.  I think I will watch it until it leaves the Duluth channel but I expect it will eat into a program.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I hope you saw Paul leave about 6 pm Duluth time.  They blew the horn three times and I think they do that for the crowd watching.

I think the next ship leaves from Two Harbors.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann, Yes, I saw him leave.  Looking good, as usual, with a very large cheering section!  When the weather turns cold, I guess that not many people show up to watch the boats?  We will soon find out.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. Today's forecast shows that we will be having a lot warmer and day today than yesterday as we will get up to around 80 degrees and have wind and a possibility of rain. It is to be cloudy all day.  My schedule is light for today as just plan on going to a meeting and then stopping to get the air pressure checked in my tires as have had a low pressure light on the dash for several days.   I look forward to watching some college football this afternoon and early evening.

Yesterday was a pretty quiet day with just the housekeeper here and then at noon we went out to eat our main meal of the day.  I was laying down resting and my Ring doorbell rang and it was the man I had called about giving me an estimate on the cost of pressure washing my house and fixing my gate.  He has to get back to me on the costs.

Shirleyn, we do hope to see you post more often.  Alaska is a very interesting and beautiful place with so many different types of terrain.  When we lived there for two years I had the opportunity to travel to different parts of the State in my work.  We really liked living in Anchorage.

Marilyne, I hope the weekend for you and AJ is also nice and relaxing.  I am not going to remind Pat that the sciatica returns occasionally although I think she has already experienced that and knows it may return.

Mary Ann, sorry you weren't able to attend the funeral and hope Dot doesn't have to stay in beyond yesterday.

Jean, we sure enjoyed the beautiful day here yesterday but today will be considerably warmer and not so nice.

Patricia, it sounds like Thursday was just teasing you before the snow and ice hit yesterday.  Is it normal for you to get slushy snow?

It sounds like delays are pretty much the norm for the ships going through the canals.

Mary Ann

My first "up" for the day was at 6:30 and it was dark.  Tom was out driving and the cat was somewhere in the condo.  I browsed a bit and started a jig-saw puzzle, then went back to bed at 8:30.  Tom came home before 9 am and I stayed in bed until  9:15 when I got up to shower and wash my hair  When I finished that chore, I came back to the computer and here I am.  Now the sun is shining and the temp is 48 degrees and I expect it to go into the 50s.  I'm not any more awake than I was at 6:30 am but I'll wake up soon.

Marilyn, you may know this, but the shipping season is down between January 15 and March 15.  That is when they do anything necessary for the ships.  The ships are in various ports during that time.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

There's  full screen shot of the British aircraft carrier now  (10:25 CDT)   on http://www.nyharborwebcam.com/  You can see two helicopters on the flight deck.

angelface555

Good morning, still dark here at 7:30 and all that snow stayed above 2000 feet so here in the valley we have wind, rain, and ice, not nice! It has to warm up for snow in this area of low to no real humidity. We are dry like Arizona, even have sagebrush in our hills. Most artic areas are dry leaving humidity to more southerly climes.

Joy

Good morning.

I was absent yesterday, as I had a busy day.

One of my nieces picked me up to go out to lunch to celebrate her mother's ( my SIL) 93rd birthday,  Even tho this niece lives an hour from me, she insisted that she wanted me to be there as a big surprise for her mother.  Another niece was bringing my other SIL, along with some other relatives.  It turned out to be a beautiful day.  My SIL was so surprised and pleased that we all were able to be there.  I really appreciated my niece picking me up and then bringing me back home. We had a long time to catch up on some family news.  We have a big family and don't often get a chance to all get together, so it turned into a very nice afternoon.  The ride didn't seem near as long as we just talked about so many different things.  She babysits her grandson on Friday's and he was with us, and slept most of the whole time we were riding.  I hope her trip back home after dropping me off was just as pleasant.  She said as long as she was driving, he would probably stay asleep.

MaryAnn , sorry that Dot was not feeling that well and you weren't able to go to the funeral.  But, I am sure the family would understand.  Dot has been fooling with that sciatica for a good while now, hasn't she?  I know how painful that can be.  Hope she will be able to get some relief soon.

I have not been following the ships for a while now.  I just haven't been staying on the computer for as long as I used to.  Even tho the swelling in my legs have gone down to almost normal,  I don't want to take a chance of the swelling returning.  I am still taking the Lasix and my system is getting used to it now, as it really isn't a big problem anymore.

I sure hope that Joan will have a quick recovery and able to be in touch again soon.  I hope her daughter is feeling a lot better.   Good that she is close by now, as I am sure she will be a big help for Joan, once she gets back home.

Mary Ann, like you, I was up around 6, but turned the heat up and went back to sleep.  Then, didn't wake up until almost 8.  And, I am still moving slow.

I need to get on with the day and do some chores.  I , also, want to get back to my exercises today.  I  missed a couple days, even tho, I did get some walking in.

Hope everyone has a great week end.

Joy

Mary Ann

Dot called while I was getting dressed in the bathroom.  I thought I heard the phone but by the time I would have gotten to answer it, she would be leaving a message - which she did.  Her daughter evidently went to the funeral yesterday and said there were over 600 people there; our church doesn't hold 600 people!  Dot had gone to Bible study on Tuesday and said they were going to set up chairs at the entry and they may have planned on using the chapel.  Her daughter said a lot of people had to stand.  We knew it would be crowded and if we had gone when I planned, I think we would have gotten seats, and I know if we had not gotten seats, we would have left as neither of us can stand for a long while.  As I did not talk to Dot, I don't know how she is getting along, however, her voice sounded good.  We'll see tomorrow how she feels as to whether we go to church or not.  And the Cholesterol Pit!!!

We just had a storm go through.  I heard the first clap of thunder and wasn't sure if it was thunder or a truck dumping some metal but then I heard rain - and I knew it was thunder.  There was more but not as loud.  The storm has left.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

We are having a very pleasant 82F degree day of sunshine, but the weatherman is saying a possibility of storm.  I will enjoy the present. :)

You are doing so well, Joy, and it sounds like you had a really nice get together with family.

Hope everyone is having a good day.  As we get older, we can be very thankful for a good day.

Marilyne

Callie - The aircraft carrier was still showing on that cam, when I looked at 9:00 AM, PDT.  I watched for awhile, to see if the cam would zoom out, to get a full picture, but it was only showing the middle part of the ship.  Also, I didn't see any sign of anyone on board.  The British sailors are probably having some fun shore leave time, in NYC!

Mary Ann - The young lady who passed away, must have had lots of friends and relatives, to have such a well attended funeral service.  Too bad you and Dot were unable to go, but it would have been impossible to stand for long in that big of a crowd.  I hope that Dot feels well enough to go to church tomorrow.

I started watching the Duluth and Soo cams last Spring, so I didn't realize that everything closes down during the Winter months.  I hope the cams are showing all winter, because I would ike to see what the lakes look like when they are frozen.  I did seen Grand Haven, when it's been frozen, and find it to be fascinating.  Never have I seen anything like that in CA, Oregon or Washington, which are the only three states I have lived in during the Winter.

Joy - That was very sweet of your niece, to take you to the luncheon for her mother.  Not enough people left on my side of the family to ever have something like that.  However, my husband's family is much bigger, and we often attend birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, weddings and such, for his many cousins.  I think he had 14 first cousins on his mother's side, and seven on his dad's side. Some are no longer living, but most are.  Last week we received a "save the date" invitation for his cousin Don's 90th birthday celebration in January.

Patricia - I didn't realize that sagebrush would grow and survive in Alaska!   The high desert areas of California and Nevada, are covered with sagebrush.  It does get very cold and snows in parts of NV, but nothing like AK.  It's all over the Southwest of course.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  I just watched a ferry pull up to the carrier.  Some sailors got off and went up stairs at the side of the ramp and inside.  A few minutes later another group came out and boarded the ferry.  Away it went taking them to shore.

Miss Ellen and parents are sightseeing in area around Times Square today.  Maybe I should text them to look out for British sailors "On The Town"!   ;)

Mary Ann

Marilyn, the woman (Allison) was very active in several things.  She was a counselor in two churches north of us plus teaching at a special school.  She also when young, had sung in our choir and was active in the youth fellowship.  She was 45 so did not do all of these things at the same time.  I'll send you her obit via e-mail, and won't post it here.  She did not marry; I am sure she didn't have time!  I know her parents better than I knew her, but everyone knew who she was.

U of Mich and Mich State are to play football today at East Lansing (MSU) and the storm we had seemed to go to the Lansing area and the game was delayed because of the storm.  Instead they showed IL and WI at Wisconsin - playing in a snowstorm.   It must be the half now because they're showing Northwestern at Rutgers.  I'm not interested in the football games but Tom is so I have the game on my TV in case he makes a comment.

The Lake Michigan/Grand Haven cam is open all winter long and you can see how far out the ice goes.  I assume the others operate all winter long too.  The locks freeze over and Lake Superior has frozen over a good percent but that depends on the temperatures.

Mary Ann

angelface555

Well, we did receive some snow, but its rapidly disappearing with the rain. The little we received looks like the last bit of suds as the kitchen sink drains, not much too it at all.

Marilyne, I'm not sure what you mean by "but nothing like Ak." It has to be warmer, with humidity to snow here. We have a dry climate as most Arctic areas do and yes we have sagebrush and even some summer undocumented tumbleweed sightings.

Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc. all have similar and often colder climates than Alaska. I think a lot of the hype attributed to the state is underserved and while I recognize that people from wet climates see our winter temperatures given their climate types, it is not the same. Forty above in Tennessee with rain is very cold whereas twenty below here has people in hoodies at times.

The S.E. portion of the state is the same rainforest geothermal area as Oregon and Washington and they probably have more snow than we do altho our summers in the Interior are twenty to thirty degrees warmer and our winters twenty to thirty degrees colder. I'm confident that different areas of California have different climates and geothermic regions even if not to Alaska's extent.

Patricia, the UP of Michigan and the SW section do not have the same types of weather, either.  Early in my "career" at the electric utility, it was necessary for me to join others in taking service calls during storms.  I found there was an imaginary line about half way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo where the weather would change.  If we had rain, Kazoo had a storm, sometimes violent, and if we had a storm, their weather was decent.  It is the same today.  There is only 50 miles from Grand Rapids to Kazoo (abbr).  It is from 300 miles plus to places in the UP.  I think Marilyn has noted the difference between northern CA an southern CA.

Vive le difference!

WOW!  I just looked at Grand Haven and it is so windy you can hardly see the lighthouses, not all three at the same time.

Mary Ann

Lindancer

Marilyne and Callie, I have been watching that carrier on and off/ Yesterday they were moving the aircraft around.  The sailors look like bug.  There sure are a lot of tour boats  around it.  To day they showed that barge, when it started to move it was so slow. Tugs must be moving it. At one time you could see the lady in the harbor in back of the barge.

by the way I have not been able to get Time Square in a week.

Mary Ann, hope you and Dot can get to church tomorrow

Mary Ann, most of the time I can't, either.  Sometimes I can get the Times Square "street cam"  by the bleachers/discount ticket booth  and occasionally  the "pedestrian cam" that shows the streets but it won't stream..  Do you suppose we overloaded it?    ;D

Right now I'm sitting on my patio with my diet coke and tablet enjoying a sunny day with no wind.  Just finished pulling up and bagging the rest of the coleus that had begun to look ragged.

I can hear some birds "discussing" whether that large creature would be a threat to coming to the feeder.  Ah...here comes a brave little chickadee.  I bet others will follow.

Lindancer

Callie, I had about 20 chickadee this morning. A pair of doves, also two blue Jays, one cardinal and a Red headed woodpecker I set and have my coffee. read the paper and call my sliding glass doors my window on nature. I still have Glenwood Willie, what I call our ground hog he should be going to bed soon, or he will not be up for his day

Callie, the view of New York Harbor I get is Earth Cam - New York Harbor.  The one with PTV will not show on my computer because of something with Flash and I'm not going to add that to my computer - something bad I read about it.  I can see a bridge in the background at the left and I can see the Statue of Liberty in the middle of the river.  I know I have a scene of NYC at Times Square but I did not go down my list of cams to find it.

I was going for the mail but Tom said it was too windy.  He hasn't gone after it either and I have an idea we may wait until tomorrow or Monday before we see it.  So much of the mail is junk anyway, especially for candidates and we have a box where our junk mail goes for recycling.

Things have calmed down at Lake Michigan, at least you can see all three lighthouses.  However, you cannot see the piers; it is as if the lighthouses are standing in water.

U of Michigan is ahead of Michigan State.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn and Callie, I have the same issue and I do use Earth Cam. I did find however, that I can view it w/o any changes on Edge.
