I wear pants most of the time - light weight in Summer, and corduroy or denim in Winter. I do have a couple of summer skirts, but rarely wear them. I've recently discovered knit pants, which are a spandex/cotton blend, with a comfortable waist band, and easy bending and sitting. The last time I wore a nice dress, (skirt and blouse), was at my nieces wedding a couple of years ago.  I struggled to get panty hose on, and swore I would never go through that again!  In the future, if I need to wear a dressy dress, I'll buy a garter belt and old fashioned stockings! (If they even make garter belts anymore?)

Jackie, I'm sure you look nice in skirts or dresses.  They can be dressy or very casual, so will fit in anywhere.  also, they're much cooler in the Summertime, than slacks or jeans.  Someone else here on S&F mentioned that they always wear skirts, year around?  I can't remember who it was, but maybe they will see this posting, and join the discussion?

Mary Ann & Patricia - My mother and my grandmother made all of my clothes, during my growing up years, and in high school too.  Dresses or skirts, were required in California schools, up until the mid-1970's, when my older daughter was in high school.  Dress codes were dropped then, and girls could wear jeans or pants if they wanted to. That was the era of the bell-bottoms.  My youngest daughter Sandy, went to Parochial school, so she wore the traditional plaid jumpers and then skirts. She was thrilled when she went to public high school and could wear anything she wanted, for the first time.

I now own a lot of jersey elasticated waist skirts tops and tunics from a UK manufacturing company called David Nieper, just wash and wear, no ironing...My hands cant cope with zips and buttons...

Good Evening from the presently cold
and clear rocky coast of Maine...   Soon to change
as the days go by.

In the Summer I like to wear skirts,  as they are
cooler for me ,  then pants,  long or short.
But in the Winter when I go out I wear pants and
other layered clothing that I can put on or peal
off,  as desired.

I wear sandals pretty much all of the time,
unless there is snow  and ice on the ground.
Sandals act like an air conditioner for me...

When I get very warm,  I need to air out...
My tops have to be easy to unbutton and
remove when  my body starts to get to
be too uncomfortably warm...

My body is happiest when it is "sweater weather"..
And here in New England on the rocky coast
of Maine,  I never know when that might
occur!!!

Good Morning all!

It has turned cold. It is only 36 right now and cloudy. When I checked some of the live rail feeds, I saw that it was snowing in La Platte, MO and in Dresler, OH.

I might go to the grocery store today, if my back feels better that it did yesterday. It has been bothering me, off and on, for at least a week. I spent yesterday doing some light housework and reading. I heat wrap actually helped more than Ibuprofen yesterday. I've decided I need one of those "float pallets" that I read about in Science Fiction.  Wouldn't that be nice. I wouldn't have to carry heavy cans and cat litter boxes from the car and up steps. The cats are blessed with four litter boxes, two on the back porch, one each in the basement and upstairs. Lightweight cat litter is great for carrying, but the cats get it all over the place. Still trying to find the perfect litter. Sigh!

Hi Everyone. It looks like we will be having a cloudy day with a good potential for rain. I have nothing on the schedule for today except to take it nice and easy and get some extra rest as seem to be very weary this morning even though I had a good nights sleep.  Yesterday as I was driving home from picking up a large online grocery order from Walmart Scott called and said he would be out shortly and would help get the groceries into the house, which he did and I very much appreciated.  We visited for awhile and then he installed the new Brother's Color Laser Printer and seeing it was connected to all of the computers.  I hope to never ever buy another inkjet printer cartridge.  We will keep the two inkjet printers in place to use for scanning only at least for now.

I am going to ask for a bye today on individual comments as just don't seem to have the energy to do so today.  I have read all of the postings since I posted yesterday.

Mary Ann

Larry, I'm sorry you don't feel too energetic today.  I know as we get older, those days happen, but you have the added heart problem too.  It was good Scott could help you with the groceries - good timing.  I hope you feel better soon.

MarsGal, Kendrick has one litter box and it is in the furnace/laundry room.  I have no idea how it looks because I don't go down to that level.  You have more cats than I do.  I took an old sheet cake pan and put his eating bowls on that and that is in the hallway between the bedrooms up on the main level.  He does a fair job of keeping his food in the pan, but not 100%.  I don't walk barefoot often because by the bathroom I sometimes walk on dry food and it is not comfortable.

At 9:15 am our temperature is 34 degrees and we are threatened with snow tonight.  Well, it is November and I guess it's time.  When it starts, I won't be walking to the mailbox.

Mary Ann

How I do all envy you all, for your cold, rainy or snowy weather.  That’s the way climate is supposed to work, but it isn’t happening here in California.  As you may have seen on TV news, we have some new and devastating  fires the are burning out of control in the Chico area. Chico is a lovely city nestled in the Sierra foothills, above Sacramento.  It's a busy college town, with a branch of the State University system located there, as well as being a popular area for retired folks to settle.

We’re getting the smoke and ash drifting down here into the Bay Area.  The sky is an ugly dark red, and it’s becoming difficult to breath.  We are being advised to stay inside today, and school children will not have outside activities or sports.

If only it would rain!  We haven’t had a drop here in the South Bay, (which includes San Jose, and all of the Silicon Valley communities), since April 6th.  In October, some areas of the N. Bay (Santa Rosa), measured almost an inch, but we didn’t get any here.  In the Central Valley, including Sacramento, and the Sierra Foothills, there has been no rain since March and early April.

Big Shock!  I've been watching it snow at the Soo and I can see it is starting to show.  A ship came in and you could not see the background of the area.  It is trash day and I have to get our trash together.  I heard a truck come in and it would be early for the truck, but I checked anyway - it was the UPS truck.  Looking out the kitchen window - WE HAVE SNOW ON THE GROUND!  It could get warm enough to melt, but I doubt it.  The weather channel says we'll have highs in the 30s the next seven days and our lows will all be in the 20s except for one day in the low 30s.  In just a month we'll have the shortest day of the year.  Brrr.

Marilyn, I saw on the Weather Channel something about Paradise CA.  Are you near that area?  I also saw Southern CA has some new fires.  I'd gladly send you some of our weather.  It hasn't been bad here, not an overload, but enough to share.  It seems that Sunny California is a bit too sunny.  I hate to see people losing their homes.

Mary Ann

Marilyne...
...as I type we have heavy rain gushing at our windows...heavy rain and strong winds was forecasted for today...I wish we could send some your way....I feel for you asking for rain, as UK went through one of its longest dry spells last summer, of ( three months, ) the grounds were so dry, I along with many had wished for rain..But today we are getting a bucket load along with strong winds...I of course am tucked up nicely inside and cosily dry and warm...

...yes terrible to lose ones homes, I also fear for the wildlife when forest fires take over...
" There is no present like the time "

MarsGal

I saw a mention of the fire, Marilyne. From the news person's comments, I understood that it is a very fast moving one. She was explaining the area covered  per hour by football feild lengths. If forget the number, but it was a lot.

Larry, I hope your low energy episode is short-lived.

Mary Ann, I know what you mean about not walking around in bare or stocking feet with cats around. Nothing like stepping into a bit of barf or an errant toy that sneaks under your feet in the middle of the night.

It is raining here now. Tomorrow will be a little colder, but sunny. Since I need to rework my grocery list, I am now shooting for tomorrow. Instead of Giant's, I now plan on going over to BJ's Wholesale and then stop at Karns Food Market. Karns is a local outfit that is known for it's meats. Ever since I was young, it has always been the place to go for meat. However, I do have to watch the prices on regular groceries as they are often higher.

Joy

MaryAnn,  I did just go look at the Soo webcam and the snow is coming down hard.  I can't seem to bring up that cam when a  ship is going through.  Yesterday, I wasn't sure if a ship was going through as I watched it for a while and it was not moving at all.  Today when I went to look, what I had seen yesterday was not there. So, I guess it was a ship.  But, nothing was moving.

I also looked at the Duluth cam and it looked like there was some snow on the ground.    And, Grand Haven was so foggy, I could barely make out the light houses at all.  And, the lake was very calm.

I hope that nobody is in the area where all the fires are.   Saw on the news where whole houses were just engulfed in flames.  It is just so hard to imagine what that is like to be going through.

Larry, sorry that you are not feeling up to par this morning.  I feel ok, but just am kind of down  in the dumps.  Don't know why.  I just get like that once in a while.  I have so much to be thankful for, that it just makes me sad when I feel like this.   But, it will pass.

I just wanted to say Hi and wish you a nice afternoon.

Joy

Mary Ann

Joy, if you look at the Soo map first, you can tell if a ship is nearby, especially if they're by the pink circle at the top of the US Soo.  I am sure there was a ship in the lock when you looked.  When ships are in the lock, they are being lowered (if going East) or raised (if going West) and they don't move.  Heavy snow doesn't help a bit, but it is interesting to watch, anyway.

I got the trash out and I think I heard the truck come by.  They used to come at 12:30 and recently it has been around 2:30, but today it sounded like 12:30 pm again.  I haven't looked to see if I was right.  It doesn't matter.

Tom is subbing at a different place today and I hope he likes it better than the last school.  So far he's been in the north end but I think the Kent District covers the entire Kent County which is 36 miles square.

Good Afternoon Everyone,
from the wet and windy
rocky coast of Maine.

I went out early this AM and
caught the bus to the grocery
store...  weather was good, not to cold
not wet,  so the bus ride went fine.

I had to pick up a few things that I forgot when
I was with Kelly yesterday...  Now I am
all set until after the weekend ...

I take my Drive Nitro Rollator  which is
all set up for me to do a small grocery pickup.

Every time I go out with my Drive,  people stop me and
we talk about it.    It is the hit of the Portland
Maine downtown Rollators ..  (giggle)

People love it and they love to talk about
it.     Which is good for me,  because  it gives
me a chance to commiserate  with other
citizens.    It is like carrying a cut dog or cat.
Everyone seems to have something to say.

I had a good morning ..
Enjoy your day, Everyone.

Good afternoon, JUst home from once a month Homemakers luncheon, it was sunny when we went, and on the way home it got windy and we now have a coldrain,

Joy I think I saw the same ship, it just look like a tall building but moving.

Larry please take care, and hope you feel better soon. I know when the weather is dreary and wet, I am lazy, when sunnny I could lick the world.

Mary Ann, Taffy, has days I never see her, she just does not get out of bed. I have days I wish I could just stay in bed, but know zi have to get up and look alive.

Good morning from the Interior, where it is a chilly four degrees with a promised high of plus sixteen. Larry, I hope your energy returns, perhaps spreading out your errands over more than one day might help? I know I seem to need a full day's recovery just after shopping. I went down to participate in Senior exercises Wednesday and was slow and uncoordinated. And even required a full day's recovery afterward!

MaryAnn, still no snow here. It has to warm up and gain enough moisture for snow, but the ice is causing some fender benders and so far no significant injuries.

Marilyne, I answered you in Pets but then Googled the fires and loss of life, and I am so very sorry for the loss of life and communities. The wildlife must suffer terribly as well. We had severe fires encompassing the Interior in 2004 through 2005 after an epidemic of spruce beetles killed thousands of trees which soon burned from lightning strikes and deranged humans. It initiated a drought until 2016.

I remember the air was yellow, you couldn't see more than a couple of feet, smelled like a campfire throughout and the smoke was visible everywhere, inside and out. They opened several hotels, schools and private homes for the evacuees and animals stabled at the fairgrounds. However, while we have fires, it is nothing in the commonality, range, and scope of California!

Joy, I often feel listless and with little energy in the winter. Summer seems to bring more energy. So many folks here in northern climes feel depressed in winter but rather than buying expensive lights, it is often a lack of vitamin D. Since it isn't water based, you need to be tested for vitamin D levels but often those depressed or lacking energy tend to have a shortage of the vitamin and are prescribed for it. That is how I first learned of it and was totally amazed at the difference. I now increase the vitamin D units in the winter and decrease those units in the summer.

Sandy, I agree with Jackie, it's a good conversation starter!

Farrah is back behind me on the couch grooming my hair. She so seldom shows affection other than following me from room to room, but these little feline symbols of a family always make me happy.

Patricia, our snow is gone but that doesn't mean we won't get more.  I will say what we had and will have is not enough to share.  The snow at the Soo was just beginning to stay on the ground, but that was hours ago.  I looked at Duluth and the ground was covered there.  It's early and we may get an accumulation but we also may get none.

Funny, I've been taking 2000 units of Vitamin D, it's on all the lists I have to provide and no one has ever questioned the amount.  I started using it to contribute to bone health.  I also take calcium.

I feel so fortunate that we live far from areas where fires can happen.  Several years ago the UP had some fires but I don't think they lasted the days, weeks or months that the CA fired occur.  I know we do have more rain than CA has had the past several years.

As I got up for the second time this morning, Kendrick settled on my bed and he was there a long time.  I think he's back there now.  I haven't been able to make the bed today because of him.

The wind has kicked up at Grand Haven and there are plenty of whitecaps.  I notice they are changing the water temperature but not that of the air.  It is NOT 74 degrees at Grand Haven!

MaryAnn many northern people, women especially get blue or depressed in winter. They have an entire industry built around the Sad or seasonal affective disorder as its called, including special sunlight mimicking lamps.

Then someone discovered that many of these folks had little to none vitamin D in their systems. Since the vitamin is oil and not water based, it stays in your system, and it shouldn't be self-regulated without testing as a patient might overdose. "People with SAD display the following symptoms:
sleepiness
carbohydrate craving
difficulty with concentration
depressed mood
anxiety
irritability
weight gain
lethargy
decreased libido
hyperphagia (increased consumption of food)"  These symptoms were what I was experiencing.

"Despite limited research into the subject, we're unsure how sunlight improves the symptoms of SAD.  At first, researchers hypothesized that light therapy helped with melatonin metabolism; however, subsequent investigation failed to support this hypothesis.  Now, some researchers have targeted an increase in vitamin D as the mechanism for improved mood in people with SAD.  Of note, vitamin D is produced in our skin after exposure to sunlight, and there are plenty of vitamin D receptors in the brain."

I at one time had no vitamin D in my system after testing. And was prescribed a standard vitamin in the summer with perhaps 1000 units or less. Now in the winter where we might have only five hours of daily light and two of those hours are dusk, I add 1000 units and stop the increase in the spring, per instructions.

Marilyne

Patricia - SAD, must be a common complaint in AK, with the days being so short in the Winter?  That would be hard to adjust to, I would think?

A couple of years ago, I was told by my doctor that I was dangerously low in Vitamin D, and to start taking 1,000 units a day, which I still do.  I've had blood tests since then, and it was never mentioned again, so I guess it was brought up to normal? I also was told that my potassium was too low, and was given a list of things to eat.  I guess it worked, because she never said anything again?

Mary Ann - Fires like the ones we have here, would most likely not occur in any area where there is average to high humidity, and year around rain.  As I've said before, we haven't had a drop of rain here, since April 6th, so it has been seven months now.  The extremely dry land, covered with tall dry trees, brush, weeds, et al, can spark a fire when the humidity drops into single digits, and a strong wind starts blowing.

angelface555

Marilyne, it isn't just the Northern portions of Alaska, but its common in Northern states, Canada, Russia, and Northern Europe. In the winter I take 2024 daily units of vitamin D, also I take probiotics and B complex. While I eat meat, I try to make it a minor part of the meal and use game over processed meat.

I eat as many brightly colored vegetables and fruit as possible. I try to eat the right type of foods rather than take supplements but that isn't always possible, and because of my allergies, I must wash all fresh vegetables and fruits in an ACV and water bath before using.

Besides processed foods such as microwavable, convenience and fast food, I've had to add canned food to the prohibited list. I rarely eat out at restaurants, or people's houses that  I don't know well due to incidences and even places such as Starbucks are on the prohibited list.

Luckily my true friends make every effort to accommodate my allergies, or I would never be able to eat out at all. In turn, I would do anything for them.

I understand that there are two other substantial area fires beside the Campfire burning and I wonder if people will or should rebuild?

angelface555

Mary Ann

Patricia, that is funny.  I don't know how he could accomplish it, but courts may think otherwise.

You mention you take B Complex.  I have taken that for years; I have no idea how many.  I do know I was in the house I grew up in and my dad was alive.  He died 48 years ago.  The hospital has a list of all of the meds I take and each visit to a doctor, they are mentioned and there has never been a question as to why I was taking any particular med nor the amount or size I was taking.  I think the combination must be working because I'm still here.

I think I have never been depressed.  I have had days when I felt "blue", but it has been a one-day thing.  I have to watch my dark chocolate intake because of theobromine that works like caffeine and affects my nerves.  I drink decaf when I drink coffee (not often).  When I drank regular coffee, I was irritable and I figured that one out myself.  A doctor gave me some tranquilizers to offset the nerve problem and i found I could not focus my eyes after a couple of days - and I was driving when I realized I could not focus - and he gave me another brand that did the same thing.  So I quit the tranquilizers and regular coffee and I was a different person.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

I just visited the Soo and we're back to the original site.  I had trouble recognizing it at first because with the snow on the ground (not much) it looked like a different place.  Anyway a ship went through only we don't see them in the locks now but they can keep on going.  The ship was the Federal Dart flying the flag of the Marshall islands.  It was not snowing there when I was watching.  Something that did interest me was the number of vehicles that went by on the road that had snow on the tops of them.  I thought they must not have garages but I suspect the drivers were at work or out.  It was not heavy snow.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, SAD is seasonal due to lack of sunlight. However, depression runs in my family, so I try to eat right, exercise and pay attention to any irrational moods. One of my sisters takes medication for depression, and my mother suffered "sick headaches" that may have been a symptom.

In better news, my Ancestory.com package left Anchorage at ten PM yesterday, so I'm hoping to see it in Saturday's mail. After all this time I'm getting ready to find out some of my DNA origins!

Vanilla-Jackie

Patricia...
....that was mentioned on our news a couple of days ago....Crazy if this law ever gets passed...no one can change the day that they were born into this world...Has this man thought about being " truthful " about himself....If this law changes as he would like it to, what if he was to meet a 49 year old lady, only to find out she is really 69...or a lady who claims she is 69 but in factuality is 89 and looking for a younger man... what one asks for, is not what one gets...
" There is no present like the time "

Mary Ann

Jackie, or - be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Patricia, one thing that surprise me is my Scandinavian background.  I know of three generations that were born in what was Denmark at the time and is now Germany.  But my Scandinavian background seems to be more Norway and Sweden.  I haven't delved into that yet.  Tock is not a Scandinavian name; it is more likely German.  Makes for fun browsing.

Mary Ann

Joy

A quick good morning.  Sunny, but windy and chilly.  I did push the thermostat up to take the chill off.

I never gave the idea of maybe I was suffering a little bit  from SAD, but I do know that I just hate it getting dark so early.  It just makes for such long evenings.  I guess that could be the problem of my feeling a little "down".

I will have the last nurse's visit today.  I am sure it will be a quick visit just to finish filling out the discharge papers.   I must say that I was very pleased with this company that I used.  All the nurses and therapist were very nice and did a very good job. They really kept up on everything.

Hope everyone will have a good Saturday.  I  will check back later in the day.

MaryAnn, I just did check out Grand Haven and the water was very rough again.  Couldn't even see the pier.  It just looks sooooooo cold.

Hi Everyone. The morning starts out cloudy but we are suppose to get some sun this afternoon.  Our temperatures will get only into the mid too high 50's today and tonight they have a freeze warning posted for our County.  I will have to say goodbye to my blooming azaleas that I have been enjoying for the last few weeks.

I had a totally wasted day yesterday as spent most of it laying down or just sitting in my easy chair. I had another good night's sleep and feel reasonably refreshed this morning.  However, I am going to try to stay in today and will skip my Saturday meeting.  I want to feel up to attending Sunday School and Church tomorrow. I did an online order from Costco for some non-perishables and that should be delivered sometime today. To get the free shipping the order had to equal or exceed $75 but that isn't hard with Costco. This will cut down on some of the big items we need to pick up at the store like paper products and a large box of coffee pods.  I look forward to watching some college football games this afternoon and early evening and later this morning I want to call my good friend over in Georgia.  I had told him I would call yesterday but just didn't have the energy so sent him a text begging off until today. There is nothing else on the schedule that has to be done today.

Mary Ann, yesterday was the second day in the last week or so where I just was too tired to do anything.  So far it is only lasting one day.  I wouldn't run any foot races today but feel a lot better than yesterday and am not so short of breath except on exertion.  I hope the snow stayed away from you area last night.  I guess some heavy snows have to be expected in the next few days as we are less than 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving and travelers usually run into bad weather in the NE and other parts of the country.  When we were living in Missouri and dealing with my two sick parents I was under a lot of stress and the doctor prescribed Zanax (I think that was what is was) and I took it for two months and had no emotions at all and said that was enough of that and stopped taking it.  I will resist taking that type of drug again.

Marilyne, I saw on the news reports pictures from a few of the burned out areas and that the town of Paradise was completely destroyed and Malibu was endangered and everyone had been ordered to evacuate. The conditions looked terrible there and also down further South near Los Angles. It sounds like it is a time to stay in your house if at all possible.

Jackie, rain is one thing but strong winds are another.  Hope your property survived the stormy weather you had yesterday without problems. You make a good case about the man changing his age in court.

MarsGal, I have known these exhausted days were probably on the horizon for me as my heart continues to struggle to supply my body with the oxygen it needs.  I wasn't any help to Pat yesterday except to load the dishwasher last evening after our salad supper and that was a small job.  I went to bed around 7 pm last night as was just too tired to stay up longer.  I remember when we lived in Virginia and Maryland we shopped at a Giant food mart.  We have really liked the meats at Costco.  They have their own butchers in the store and usually the meat is very good.

Joy, like you I can't imagine suddenly losing my home to a fire or any other disaster.  It must leave one with a very empty and desperate feeling but the common comment is at least they are still alive and homes can be rebuilt.  Sorry to hear you were down in the dumps yesterday.  That doesn't happy to be too often and when it does it usually doesn't last more than a day.  I know it will be a highlight to get discharged by the nurse.  Glad you were happy with the care you have received through the company you used.

Sandy, glad you got out before the wet weather hit your area and stocked up the pantry for a few days.  Those Nitro Rollator's are very attractive so can understand people commenting to you about them.  Glad it gives you a common thing to talk about with other people.

deAngel, I am always glad to read you have felt up to attending your Homemakers meetings and luncheons.

Patricia, I am trying to limit what I do in any one day in terms of errands or going somewhere.  However, it isn't easy as I have the tendency when I feel good to probably overdo and try to squeeze in something else.  Maybe it is getting too cold for you to get much snow although I remember you saying you haven't been getting much snow the last few years.  I heard one of the recent fires in California was the result of a campfire getting out of control when the wind picked up.  I guess we humans think something like that can never happen to us.  Glad you found the benefits of taking Vitamin D to help throughout the winter darkness.  Did Farrah do a good job of grooming your hair.  Pat and I would be "up the creek" if we couldn't eat out.  Everyday it seems to read something more ridiculous like the man going to court to have his age changed.

...I miss those days back in Bedfordshire when we became annual members of our nearest Costco ( Milton Keynes, ) I always found it handy for household stuff such as bulk buying loo rolls, kitchen paper rolls, washing up liquids, soap-powder, the normal household necessities...and of course our last home had a car garage, perfect for storing the stuff...

A smoky good morning to everyone.  I feel like I've been transported to a science fiction world that is dark and frightening, where you don’t know what's coming next.  The sun has been blocked out by the thick smoke in the air,  but it’s still shining up there somewhere, and lends a dark red/yellow color to the air.  There is no wind today, to blow any of the smoke, so it’s everything is quiet and still.

Larry, the fire that destroyed the town of Paradise, was not caused by a campfire.  The forest Service gives each new fire a name, to distinguish it from others that are burning.  They have named this one the Camp Fire, because it started in the vicinity of what was once on old lumber camp, back at the turn of the last century. This was not caused by humans, but was caused by nature . . . hot dry heavy winds from the N/E move quickly through the mountains and canyons, where no one lives.  They say this fire was sparked in a granite canyon, and then sparks and burning ash moved in a direct line to hit the town of Paradise.

So, AJ and our son and grandson, have tickets to the Stanford/Oregon State football game today at Stanford.  I’m sure the game will not be called off, because of the smoke, but it won’t be a pleasant experience for either the players, or the fans who are there watching.  I guess the old saying that, “The show must go on”, applies here.
