Almost noon time, early for me, Sunny but the wind gust are 40 and over.  Leaves are blowing everywhere. Getting colder.

Joy, all the time over the years that I have had visiting nurse, I only had one that acted like she was doing me a favor to come to my house. I often wonder what she wrote down in her reports as she stayed only 5 min a few times, All the others were lovely. The head nurse that came once in a while was a man. If I had any problems I was to call him at the hospital.

Larry, glad you are feeling a little better. We enjoy all your post.  I do not know how you can change your birthday. (Only Jack Benny could stay the same age  :) There is a sad case here on the Island of a mother try to stop chemo for her 13 year old son, she claims he is in remission.  The courts say he needs chemo treatment for the next 3 years

Mary Ann, I checked all the cams and the weather looks cold everywhere.  I see a cruise ship getting ready to sail in NY

Marilyn, I can't imagine what you are going through with the fires in your area.  Is there a possibility that fire could reach Los Gatos?

Gloria, it is cold.  Earlier today my thermometer read 26 degrees outside.  Tom came back from driving and said the roads are bad.  He has snow/winter tires on his car.  My nearby thermometer reads 34 degrees.  It looks awfully cold at Grand Haven - many whitecaps!

Mary Ann

FlaJean

Marilyne, we just had two days of off and on rain.  Wish we could send some your way,  however, today is 60F and sunny.  Our grandson lives in Temple City so don’t think he is in any danger there from the fires.

Hope everyone is feeling well and enjoying their Saturday.

When we moved to Niceville we downsized to a smaller house.  I knew we would not have as much room so I only kept a few of my best loved books.  Finally unpacked them yesterday and my husband cleared a shelf for me in the office.  I have a lot of books on my iPad but I still like holding a real book and it seems easier on my eyes.

Jackie, it’s nice to see you posting.  I don’t post a lot but I always look forward to reading the posts.

Larry, hope you rest and take it easy today.  Mary Ann, I know it’s cold there, but as long as the furnace is working you can stay warm and cozy regardless of the weather.

Gloria, our area here in Niceville/Blue Water Bay, was really fortunate to miss that hurricane.  I know you were glad to hear that as you have relatives living in the area.  I know your grandson was in the hospital for a long time and hope he is getting along OK.

Lindancer

Marilyn, it is getting colder by the hour here, wish I was in Niceville right now.  My grandson is doing well right now, thank the good lord. It was worth the  17 hour trip to Orlando by ambulance trip to the hospital in Orlando. They got him up walking. When the hospital in Pensacola said he wouldnever walk. He had a tumor on his spine. How is your grandson?

Jean, you're right, it is cold up here - low 30s.  But this is only November.  Come January and February, I expect we'll see some colder weather.  The furnace is working well and I hope it continues.  Today started out not so nice but I think things have improved.  Tom drove some this morning and said the roads were not good.

I think I have never been bothered by the snow, even when I was driivng to work.  I am not far from an expressway and those are kept cleared but I have driven on some icky expressways.  Now I let Tom worry about that because I have no car.

Good morning from a still snowless Interior altho white has superseded blue in our skies with an inch predicted.

I probably shouldn't have but purchased two more PSP filter programs and set them up last night.

The USPS tracker says my Ancestry package is out for delivery, so I'm impatiently awaiting my kit!

I had breakfast with Dora this morning and finalized plans for Thanksgiving at her house; Alan will do all the driving which will be interesting as they live in the lower foothills. They are expecting ten guests so it should be fun and the men are doing the cleaning up.

Jackie, MaryAnn, that story of the Dutchman seeking to change his age for better online dating luck startled a laugh from me! Perhaps I should file seeking a return to sixteen? Maybe I could then leave my arthritis behind?

Larry, I did enjoy my two grooming sessions. Cats, governed by scent, and when a cat rubs against you, he/she is marking you as theirs. Mother cats groom their babies; kittens groom their mamas and each other because they carry that family scent. Bonded cats will groom each other and so if a cat grooms you, then the cat sees you as part of their family, and not only a roommate.

Farrah has recently trusted me to take food directly from my fingers. Before it had to be placed in her dish or her food box so this was also a sign of further trust. When I think back to 2016 when she spent six months under my bed, this is all amazing!

We haven't had any measurable snows for some years altho last spring's February and March dropped a record amount of snow. A weather spokesperson said w/o those two months, we would have tied for less snow, but February and March made it our fourth heaviest snow season. This year is going back to no snow it seems, at least for now.

Joy, it must feel so good to have those visits behind you, and now you know what steps to do on your own.

Jackie, we are due to have Costco open up in their old building sometime this month. Previously they had moved out when Walmart came in, and a Sam's Cub took over their building. Then Sam's Club stores went broke, and now Costco has returned and after some remodeling is due to reopen again in their old building.

Marilyne, California is going through hell, its horrific and I understand what you're describing as in 2004, we had 6,600,000 acres burned in 701 Interior fires. It was the warmest and third driest in Interior history. We were an evacuation area, so everything was full to bursting with people, and animals packed together.

We didn't and still don't have similar populations, so there were only a couple of deaths, but it too was horrific because the city was surrounded; where would we go? The air was yellow, visibility was limited to a few feet, and smoke drifted in and out of buildings. Every couple of blocks ther was a safe breathing location. I hope you stay safe and these fires are soon contained.

Hi Gloria! I need to check out that NYC cam! I keep forgetting about it as we are four hours behind them.

We have warmed up and expecting snow that has yet to arrive. It is plus 22 with an expected overnight low of plus fifteen.

Mary Ann

Patricia, it's obvious that Kendrick has accepted me into his family.  He rubs against me every chance he gets and now in winter temps when I am wearing slacks, dark colored slacks, I have to watch him or the lower part of the slacks is covered with cat hair.  I have a sticky thing to remove the hair but sometimes the hair is so thick, it doesn't remove good.

Tomorrow after church, Tom, Dot and I will go to her house to take our picture for my Christmas project.  I think I will not do anything similar again because it is not something I can start and finish alone.  Just because it is important to me does not mean it is important to others.  Tom is a big help but he has other things to do.  One of the greats did not send a picture but Tom took one off Facebook that we will use.  I am not really a nagger but I do have a complete set of family pictures.  Next it will have to be printed and we are using Walgreen's service and I know I am not the only person who is going that route.  After that is done, I can address and mail the sheets; I have the envelopes and stamps!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Hang in there, and continue on with the family pictures.  They may not be important to other members now, but they will appreciate having them in the future.  My mom was always insistent on taking pictures every Christmas, and on other occasions like Birthdays, vacations, etc. She would send duplicates to most of those people who were in the pictures. Then she would put them in albums, with each photo labeled as to name, place and date. I was one who complained when she would bring out her camera, but now I'm so thankful to have those old photos!  I have all the albums here, and I love looking through them.  I often will scan an old one, and put it on my Facebook page.

Patricia - I remember those fires that were near you in 2004.  I think you talked about them in Senior Net?  It's hard for me to process the fact that the entire town of Paradise is gone!   It was a fairly good sized, with about 28,000 population.  The one hospital there, called Feather River Hospital, has burned to the ground.  All patients were evacuated safely, but just imagine the expensive medical devices that are gone, like MRI, ultra sound, CT scans, etc., not to mention all other things needed to run a hospital.

Jean - your grandson is in a safe place in Temple City.  That's in the San Gabriel Valley, close to the town where I grew up. Strong Santa Ana winds there, but it's far enough from the foothills to be safe from any fires that might start in the mountains.

Just a heads up to everyone, I will be upgrading the site to SMF 2.1 in the coming weeks. For those who aren't members of CP (another site of Pat's that I just did the upgrade on), the new version includes quite a few new features as well as a theme that's optimized for devices of all sizes, including smartphones and tablets. The new features include the ability to embed YouTube videos, the ability to like posts, a built-in notifications system, post/PM drafts (start working on a post, then save your work and come back to it later without having to keep the site open) and a few other things.

I will keep everyone posted as to when the change is happening so you're not caught off guard :) "

Patricia, I did read this in the other folder, but it sounds interesting.  I hope we're up to all of the changes that will be made.

Hi Everyone. We have a bright and clear morning sky and it is 44 degrees here at my house on this Veteran's Day.  I am pretty sure we escaped the light freeze last evening. Yesterday was a quiet day although we did get out around 2:30 and went to have our main meal at the Monterrey Mexican Restaurant downtown. I came home and watched football until about 10:30 last night with Georgia and Clemson winning but the University of South Carolina losing to Florida as although it was a good close game.  Today is Church Day and as of last night Pat planned on attending Church.  However, her Fibromyalgia has flared up in her neck and shoulders so know that will be a factor in her final decision.

Jackie, this is the first place we have lived where we were close enough to Costco to feel a membership was worth the cost.  We have really enjoyed belonging to it even though we spend a lot of money when we shop there but the quantities are large and their house brands are excellent.

Marilyne, I can't image what it must be like living with that outside environment and expect it permeates the house as well at least the burning smell.  Did one of the other current fires start from a campfire, not that it matters as a fire is a fire.  Not much can be done about the fires started by nature.  I hope AJ and your son were able to enjoy the football game.  I know the tickets are not cheap and these games are important to a schools standing in the ranking and that spells over into income for the schools.  Is AJ a Stanford fan?

deAngel, I sure miss the humor of Jack Benny and the other funny men of his generation.  I always loved his radio shows with Rochester, the old Maxwell and the vault for his money in the basement.  That is a sad story that the mother thinks she knows better than the doctors about her son's cancer.  It is so good to read that your grandson is doing well now as he sure has been through a lot.  I can't even image a 17 hour ambulance ride as I have found short rides to be very miserable as they apparently can't have much in the way of a cushioned ride and every bump in the road is felt.

Patricia, were you talking about an inch of snow or rain yesterday that had been forecast.  If you enjoy the PSP filter programs then why shouldn't you buy them.  I will be interested in what your Ancestry package reveals for you.  It sounds like you have some nice Thanksgiving dinner plans.  I hadn't thought about Farrah marking you with her grooming. It is interesting that Costco would reopen once they had closed their store.

Oldiesmann, thanks for the heads up on the upcoming software update.

Jackie, after I used the changed software I haven't had any problems and really like some of the new features.

Mary Ann, it sounds like Tom didn't much enjoy his driving with the bad roads yesterday morning.

Jean, our weather forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday is for a lot of rain so am going to enjoy the sun today.  Over the years we have reduced the number of books we have down a great deal.  We only have a few left but now have access to so many via audio books and ebooks.  I very seldom buy books anymore.

Sandy

Thanks Patricia for the telling us about the upcoming update to our new site...

How exciting ...  New stuff to play with and enjoy...

Sandy

Good morning from the warmer, snow-dusted but no accumulation Interior. This weather is becoming a game, and you almost want it to snow already! Let that other shoe drop!

MaryAnn, Farrah doesn't rub against me or anything else as regular cats do. She doesn't meow, chitter at birds or engage in most house cat behaviors. Which is why I was so touched that Farrah would now take food, not from a palm but my fingers. She also groomed my hair, two huge signs of trust after three years that she's still working on.

She has excellent hearing, good sight, good comprehension, but she also has a healthy dose of self-preservation that she'll never entirely shed. She has her own set of vocalizations and her own set of behaviors that are more feral than tame. She does knead on the towel she prefers for a bed to put herself to sleep.

Keep up with those photos. If not necessary now to all, they will be to most and probably to all later on when they see what a gift it is. My family may not have been rich, famous or fairly notable, but I treasure the photos, little diaries and stories passed down. This DNA test and the later one I want to do with "23 and me" will cement that for me and settle any questions.

I received my DNA kit but have yet to open it, probably on Monday.

Marilyne, the town of Paradise reminds me of the old city of Valdez, (similar in the population); other than being on the Gulf. In the 1964 quake, it suffered this humongous quake, the entire commercial dock with people, buildings, and many ships disappeared into a chasm in the earth that closed over them. Then it was hit by a tsunami that leveled the rest of the town. Rather than rebuild, the survivors rebuilt in another site across the gulf. Old Valdez was lost and abandoned due to a force of nature.

California is going to be something different and unrecognizable than it ever was before. How will it reinvent itself? Larry, I understand that the Camp fire was named after a creek in the area.

Gloria, I am so glad to hear your nephew is doing well and it was lucky that the other doctors were able to help! You see it with Shirley's son and Joan's daughter; it pays to shop around and have more than one opinion.

Larry, it was an inch of snow that had been forecast. The rain and freeze and refrozen ice have become our new regular. After first forecasting that inch of snow, they then said some flurries but no accumulation which is what happened as the grass is still uncovered.

Larry, those PSP filter programs were expensive, but yes, I will use them in my PSP program so worth the cost. Cosco was here first but left when earlier this decade, Walmart moved in along with Sam's taking over the old Costco building. Then when the Sam's Club stores went bankrupt, the store here closed and Costco returned. Many of the surrounding towns and villages depend on wholesale markets, so this will be a good fit.

When I moved in here, I had thirty-eight boxes of books, but have donated many and have over three thousand on my two Kindles. While there are fiction authors I follow, I do have several ethnic cookbooks and some nonfiction as well.

Oldiesmann's improvements sound similar to Facebook in many ways.

Joy

Patricia, I have had my Ancestry DNA kit since last Christmas.   My son and DIL gave it to me and I have yet to send it back.   I think you have to wait a certain time  after you eat and I just keep forgetting.  I really wanted to do it at the time I got it,  and it makes me so angry with myself that I just can't seem  remember to get it out and make sure that I do  it.

Good idea, Patricia.  Thanks !

I've had my DNA results from both Ancestry and 23andMe for some time and they are similar.  One thing I found recently, as things change as more people are involved, is that my Scandinavian ancestry shows more Norway and Sweden.  Norm (the Great Dane) would be horrified.  I can trace my Danish ancestry through my grandfather, great grandfather and 2xgreat grandfather - all on Dad's side.  Another great grandfather was born in Denmark but his father was born in the Netherlands and his mother in Sweden, also on Dad's side.  My paternal grandmother was born in Wisconsin and her mother was born in Germany.  It does give me something more to trace because I figured I was at a dead end.  My mother's ancestry is pure English with dead ends at one set of great grandparents from Northern Ireland.

Dot and I did our usual and we ate our usual - cream pie and tuna melt.  Afterward I went home with her to wait for Tom who came along shortly.  He took a selfie of the three of us and it turned out quite well so I now have all of the pictures I want for my Christmas message.

We're not done yet because we have to take them to Walgreen's to complete everything.  I should be able to send them to friends and relatives a reasonable time before Christmas.  I don't send many cards now, but all of my older relatives are out or state and I like to keep in touch.  I am pleased that a few children of deceased relatives send me cards, some I have not met in person.

The sun is trying to shine, a welcome change from the past few days.

Whitecaps on Lake Michigan and I would not want to walk on the pier today.

Mary Ann

angelface555

I was reminded today that I do have relatives in Northen California. The cousin was my youngest sister's age, born in 1961 with two older sisters, closer to 1948 and 1950. Their father, my uncle was the first of sixteen children and the last. He died somewhere around 2016 about 106 I believe. They had a walnut orchard outside of Redding in a small town called Redfield or something similar?

My father rarely kept up with his family and the last I saw them was in 1965 on a cross-country relative visiting trip with family. The cousin's name was Eddy, short for Edwin.

Marilyne

Patricia - If your relatives are still living in the Redding area, I hope that they were safe from the Carr Fire, that occurred there, during July or August of this year? If you look it up, you can probably see all of the statistics.  At that time, the Carr Fire was called the worst fire in the history of California.  Now, that dubious honor is held by this week's Camp Fire.

Mary Ann - My older daughter didn't like the new updating of her ethnicity on Ancestry, a couple of months ago, so she sent for the kit from 23 & Me.  That one gave her similar results, but not the same.  On ancestry her results were more in line with mine, but on 23 & Me, she was more in line with AJ.  I might send for that kit too, but I'm perfectly happy with my results from Ancestry, so I doubt if I will.  By "happy", I mean that the results were exactly as expected, according to long ago family research done by an aunt on my mother's side, and also what I knew of my dad's side.

I think that's a really nice Christmas message that you're sending, complete with the pictures of everyone. I'm sure they will all appreciate your efforts. A great idea!

Marilyne, since we each receive fifty percent of our DNA from each parent who each received 50% from each of their parents, etc. Even identical twins DNA will not be the same percentages of ethnicity.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. I am going to post this evening as expect to be pretty busy tomorrow morning.  We are expecting a pretty rainy day tomorrow.  I have an 8 am meeting with a friend who will be here for an hour or so.  Then later in the morning it is time to get my toenails trimmed again and the doctor's office is about 25 minutes away.  I am glad to see the appointment occur as a couple of the toenails have been hurting my toes.  I should be able to wear my house shoes again after the appointment.  Pat wasn't feeling like going to Church this morning so I went to Sunday School and stayed for the Church service.  We had a presentation of the American flag and a later recognition of our Veternan's and their spouses.  It was a nice service.

Patricia, I can see why Costco's large packaging of items would be helpful to those areas that must lay in supplies for the winter months or are quite a distance away from the villages.  We have more storage in this house than we did in our last home and now with only one car in our two car garage it has provided some additional storage.  Wow, with 38 boxes of books to move when you went into your current place it must have been pretty crowded.  I love books and would enjoy having a large library but have moved too many times during my work career and afterwards to retain many of them.  Do you get free ebooks from Amazons daily or weekly offers of inexpensive and free books.  I probably have over 2,000 of the free books in my account although don't save many on my phone or iPad since I can always download them from the cloud.  I have found some of them to be very good reads.  Lately I have been mainly listening to audio books.  One of the lady's in our Sunday School class is in California visiting her daughter and they had to evacuate to a hotel.

Joy, does your son ever ask you whether you have submitted your DNA for analysis.  I wonder if the DNA submitted to these Ancestry sites also goes into the FBI databases?

Mary Ann, glad you now have the pictures you need as Christmas is coming up quickly.  I have never been very good at taking pictures although I have a lot of family and related pictures up on Google Photos.

Mary Ann

The picture Tom took today was his first "selfie" and it turned out good.  Seeing Patricia gave instructions for putting pictures in S&F, I may try to put it in here - it is of Tom, Dot and me.  Don't hold your breaths!

Ancestry has said that with additional people getting their DNAs, the statistics change so that is why your DNA and that of your daughter, Marilyn, might change.   If 23&me does the same thing, there could be a difference in the number of people involved.  I am now investigating Norway and Sweden.  Denmark for my family is complicated because after the first five children were born (one was my grandfather Tock), Schleswig-Holstein went to Germany after the Prussian War.  My great-grandparents moved to the Jutland Peninsula where most of the other children were born.  I think anyone born in Schleswig-Holstein would have a problem deciding whether they were born in Denmark or Germany (1860 or so)

Annie stopped by tonight and it was good to see her.  She had been to Las Vegas and told us all about it - what she liked and didn't like.  She brushed the cat and also clipped his toenails - and he was very vocal in that he did not like it at all.

Tom is getting groceries and will be home any minute.  Speaking of the devil - he just came in.

Patricia, maybe you'll be lucky and your California relative might contact you via DNA.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Good Morning:  It's very quiet in S&F today.  I think we're all used to Larry, starting us off every day, but he mentioned yesterday that he would not be posting this morning.

Sandy came over yesterday to see if AJ could fix her car headlights.  They were both dim, and one was even flickering.  He worked on them all afternoon, and had everything working right by the time she left around seven.  Then she called him when she got home, because they had both gone out by the time she got back home.

Long story short - he thinks he knows what's wrong,  so he's going to go to where she works this morning (UPS) and will drive her car back here, and fix them here, and then return the car before time for her to leave work at 5:00.

So that's my excitement for the day! ::)  While he's working on the car, I'll go to the store and get something good for dinner.  I've been thinking about a small pot roast, so may consider getting one.

The air is still thick with smoke here, and considered very unhealthy.  Many people are wearing masks.  I have some from last year, so will take one with me when I leave today.  I'll check in later . . . hope you all have a nice day!

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I remembered that Larry would not be here this morning but neither was anyone else!

What with the smoke, then having her headlights go out, Sandy was in a dangerous spot.  I hope AJ can get things fixed for her.

Tom is subbing at Ada today, a small town suburb of Grand Rapids.  Amway is based there with a huge complex.  One of my next door neighbors works at Amway.

I just watched a ship go through the Soo and earlier I watched a ship leave Duluth.  There are a lot of ships listed at Duluth but most of them are later today or later this week.

We did not have any more snow last night and what we've gotten is mostly gone.  I hope by next weekend things are clear because we have to drive to Holland Saturday for our Thanksgiving.  The snow does not bother Tom, only me!

Now that we have all of the pictures together, I'll have to see if Tom wants to resize them or have Walgreen do the job.  Walgreen's will arrange and print the pictures and the rest will be up to me.

Mary Ann

Good after noon. Was down to 26 this morning

Marilyn Looks like AJ is going to have a busy day.  I Heard ton TV to day this is the worst fires that Calf. has ever had.

Mary Ann, to day they are also celebrating Veterans Day here with a parade.  I have to tell you Veterans day was also my most embarrassing moment in my whole life. Many years ago I was in the City, in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral,Watching  the Veterans Day parade.  We were also going to a show at Radio City and it was getting late . When we saw the tanks coming down the street we decided to run across. Guess who fell in the middle of 5th Ave with a tank approaching,  I think half the NYC police force was out there picking me up :yikes:  I was not hurt, my knees were bruised and my stocking in shreds

Gloria, thanks for asking about my grandson.  He has completed cancer treatments but has to have frequent checkups.  He has a good attitude and is doing well at present.  I’m glad to hear that your grandson is doing much better.

We had a beautiful sunny day yesterday but today is another dreary rainy day.  The temperature is in the 60s.

angelface555

Good morning from the, "It is Snowing!" Interior. The other shoe has finally dropped.

Larry, yes I get the ten free books to read from Kindle and Prime's monthly free book but my worst is seeing a favorite author's upcoming book and preordering it. That has been one of my recent unfortunate cutbacks!

Mary Ann

Gloria, I am sure that was an embarrassing moment when you fell in the middle of the Veteran's Parade; you said you were not hurt, but I'll bet your pride was hurt!

I'm sorry to say I don't know a thing about the parade here.  For one thing it was downtown and without a car, I don't go anywhere so I don't pay attention to such things.  I would think ours would be today, too.  I remember going to parades when very young and sitting on my dad's shoulders.

Today has been dreary but fortunately no snow.

I'm going to have to nap and I'll see if I can find a cat to join me; if he isn't handy, he'll find me.

Mary Ann

FlaJean - Good to hear that your grandson is finished with his treatments and is doing better.  Is he the one who lives in Temple City?

Gloria - That was a memorable moment, when you fell on 5th Ave., during the Veteran's Day Parade!  At the time, I'm sure you were scared . . .  but after it was over, and you knew you were okay, you probably laughed.  It's a great story!

AJ finished fixing the headlights, and has delivered Sandy's car back to the UPS employees parking.  Now, here's hoping that when she gets off work at 5:00, that the lights will be nice and bright, and will stay that way!

Mary Ann - I did not get the pot roast, as I had planned.  They were all just too big for the two of us, and also much more expensive than I thought they would be!  I ended up getting ingredients for a meatloaf, so will sign off now, and get it prepared and ready to bake for tonight.
