Marilyn, unless they're on sale, pot roasts are expensive.  Last time we got any, they were 2 for price of one so Tom bought two and we still have one in the freezer.

Many, many years ago, I was at the meat counter of my then grocery and they had a lovely looking rolled roast (don't see those any more) and it was twice the size I wanted.  I asked the butcher to cut it in half, which he did.  A woman beside me said "I'll take the other half" and I informed her I was taking both halves.  It was so long ago I don't remember how it tasted, but I am sure it was delicious.  My dad was still alive so it had to be more than 50 years ago!  I love pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onions - and gravy!  Needless to say, we don't have it often - and often invite Dot to join us.

I hope Sandy can find her way home tonight with her repaired headlights.

Hi Everyone. We are in for another cloudy and somewhat rainy day.  My main activity for today is a quick trip to Walmart to pick up a prescription and to get a few items we need so we can delay our next trip to Costco a couple of days. The person I was suppose to meet with this morning had to reschedule until tomorrow morning.  So it should be a pretty quiet day.  Yesterday I did get to the podiatrists office and had my toenails trimmed and also met earlier with the friend who came over.

Mary Ann, I sure would like to see a picture of you, Dot and Tom.  Glad Annie was able to stop by and take care of Kendrick even if he didn't like it.

Marilyne, I was a little late getting here to post this morning as it was time to refill my two medicine boxes and since I dread doing that job I wanted to get it done early this morning.  We also had a very full dishwasher to unload and I got everything ready for Pat's breakfast.  Only one time have I ever had my headlights fail and it was on a trip back from flying my folks to the nursing home in Northern Iowa, about a 5 hour drive from where their house was.  My dad had a old pickup truck that my brother-in-law had driven from Missouri up to their home with a hospital bed we had purchased for Dad and we used that to get back to Missouri.  It was fairly late at night when the generator went out on the pickup and the lights began to dim and before we got the last few miles they went out.  It was snowing and there was no traffic so I decided to keep going as far as possible and the the pickup died just as we turned into the driveway at my folks homes where we were staying.  I considered it one of many occasions when God had been looking out for me.  Glad AJ was able to get Sandy's lights fixed as with the smoke I expect headlights are needed 24/7 if you are out on the road.  I would take meat loaf over a roast about anytime.  Pat uses her big mixer to fix her meat loafs now and it makes the preparation pretty easy.

deAngel, I heard on the news yesterday that two more wildfires had started out in California.  I bet you are the only one posting in S&F's who had a tank bearing down on them when laying in the road.  Glad the police were alert to help you.

Jean, I think attitude is to important in dealing with any medical situation.  Sure glad to read that your grandson has completed his cancer treatments and hope it is in permanent remission.

Patricia, certainly a change to read of you getting snow and not the rain.  We have never used the Prime benefit of the monthly free books as have access to  such fine libraries. Most of the paper books I accumulated and since gotten rid of came from yard sales or used book stores.

Mary Ann

Larry, your ride in the pickup and headlight problem reminded me of the time Norm, a friend and I were on our way to Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) to visit a teacher all of us had had.  Norm had a 1940 car, a convertible, and the lights did not work well.  The only way he could keep the lights on was to hold on to the switch that controlled the lights.  I don't know what he did in the UP to correct the situation because I don't remember driving back home that way.  That experience was a fun one for Norm and me, but rather intimidating for Norm's friend.  Since Dad was a teacher, we knew the teacher who owned the cottage and we also knew the other teachers personally.  Ken, the friend, did not.  I think Ken found out soon that teachers are human.

Radar shows snow over most of Michigan, but I look out the window and it is not snowing.  It probably will soon.

Tom left before I woke up and I don't know if he is subbing or driving.  Tuesday is my day for any appointments now but since I didn't have one today, he may have accepted a subbing job.  I'll find out when he comes home.  Since subbing is "pot luck" he takes what is offered and he hasn't been too happy with his assignments.  However, he is paid!  Right now that is very important.

Good morning from the Interior with an inch snow accumulation and perhaps a few flurries today. There is nothing notable planned for the day other than a Post Office trip and some exciting laundry and cleanups.

My mother worked full time, working as an employment counselor, secretary to various individuals and office manager before becoming an assistant Librarian at a local high school. So, we socialized with office personnel and teachers.

My father, fresh out of the war and the navy, worked in his uncle's bar, then construction before finally starting his fifty-year position with the city's Public Works Department, first as a welder and last as department foreman. So, we socialized with police, firefighters, and utility men.

I bring this up because if one of my sisters or I put one toe over that straight and narrow line, my folks knew within minutes and usually before the school did. It was very disheartening at the time!

Mary Ann

Patricia, in high school I tried to toe the line so I would not embarrass my teacher father.  I don't think that bothered Norm at all.  He was much more outgoing than I was.

Does anyone have the url for Pat’s Photography Cafe site?  It used to be photography-cafe.com but no longer responds.  Wondering if they changed the name or URL.

Larry, I do not think there is anyone stupid enough in here to try to run in front of a rolling tank with high heels. Maybe the good LOrd smiled as I also had just come out of St. Patrick's Cathedral,  I laugh  now, but then I was so embarrassed with all those City cops picking me up.  At least they got me to the other side of 5th Ave :)

Mary, there is a restaurant (Bil Mar) at the beach and I think that is what it is.  I had a time figuring out what the light thing was when/if I looked in during the evening (not expecting it to be dark - but I know better now).  It was a big window and the light was on in whatever room that is.

I just watched a ship go through the Soo and it is snowing there, hard enough that you can barely see anything beyond the bridge to Canada.  I think most of the traffic now is local and the cars buzz along like the pavement is clear.  But this is Michigan and we're used to snow, except it does take a little practice with the first snow.

Tom subbed today at one of the schools he attended after his family moved to this area.  We are in the Northview district.  Tom was about six when they moved here, Tim was seven and Terry nearly five (they were about 18 month apart).  He was in sixth grade when he went to the school.  The school (Highland Middle School) was one of the first to have movable walls and there was an article and a picture in the paper about the walls.  In the picture, sitting beside the wall was Tom who had a natural Afro at the time.  It was very obvious it was Tom!  Tom had and has curly hair so the Afro was very prominent.  He's going back to Highlands on Friday.

It's only 27 degrees here and I doubt it's been over 30 degrees and it is now just past 4 pm.  I've been very comfortable inside.

Mary Ann - A just watched an attractive boat go through the Canal and under the Bridge at Duluth.  It was called the Wagenborg on the side, and the Reeseborg, on the front, so don't know which is correct?  It took me by surprise, when I clicked on the Canal cam, so I didn't have a chance to see where it was from.  I would imagine The Netherlands or Denmark??   It surely does  look cold at both Duluth and at the Soo.  In spite of the snow, there were a few watchers at the canal.  I'm wondering if the Soo Locks, operate year 'round, or if they close down during the coldest months?   I also looked at Grand Haven, and it looked mighty cold there as well.  I couldn't tell if there was any snow, but it was not snowing.
Interesting that Tom subbed at a school today, where he attended 6th grade.

Marilyn, the shipping season ends January 15 and starts up again March 15.  During that time, any service that has to be done to the ships is done.  The Great Lakes for the most part freeze in the winter but I understand an occasional ship may be on the lakes.

Wagenborg is the name of the company that owns the Reestborg and they fly the Netherlands flag.  It was a pretty ship, wasn't it.  The Fraserborg is scheduled to depart about 5 pm CST, but it originally was to leave at 4:45 and last I looked at the speed, it was 0.0 knots, so who knows.  I am sure you noticed that Paul is to arrive tomorrow morning.

It was snowing at the Soo last I looked; you could not see anything beyond the US-Canada bridge.  I think the area looks so clean with the new snow and you can see things better too.

I think Tom was quite excited at being able to be at Highlands Middle School today.  All three boys went to that school because it had 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

I just went to Grand Haven, forgetting the time, and it was eerie.  The lake was almost black and I could just make out the lighthouses.  What was interesting - on the horizon you could see the sunset, not the sun, just the sunset.  Grand Haven is on the west coast of Michigan.

Hi Everyone. We are in for another cloudy and rainy day with 100% chance of rain this evening and a fairly high percentage chance throughout the day.  This will be a relatively busy morning as between 9-11 the man is coming to check my oxygen concentrator for the normal 3 month checkup and at 10 am a friend will be here to work with me for an hour. I have completed all of my morning kitchen duties including just fixing Pat's breakfast.  Now it is time to rest awhile sitting here at my desk. This evening is our annual Thanksgiving Day Wednesday night meal at the Church with turkey and dressing and all the trimmings.  This is the one evening a year we have several veterans from the VA hospital, usually in wheelchairs, join us and also the rescue or comfort dogs will be there again this year as they were a big hit last year with not only the vets but also all attending the meal. Later Scott will be out to spend a couple of hours with us.

Mary Ann, interesting that we both had experiences with the headlights on a vehicle. Fortunately, both ended well.  Glad you explained about when the canals didn't operate during the winter months as had that question in my mind yesterday.  I bet Tom felt like he had a trip down memory lane when he subbed at the school he had attended years ago.  When I attended my 40th high school reunion almost 20 years ago I found the high school, which was being used as an elementary and middle school when the high school consolidated with a neighboring town school, really hadn't changed at all including the basketball scoreboard at the end of the gym.  It was still in pretty good shape.  Did Tom find the school still have the movable walls?  I think our high temperature today will be 50 degrees.

Patricia, I hope your trip to the Post Office was uneventful and you found the laundry exciting (I never considered it so :).  Your mother and father held some interesting jobs that let you meet people in many different walks of life.  I also tried to toe the line as didn't want to bring any problems on my folks.

deAngel, the alternative of the cops not picking you up would not have been good.  You sure didn't want to become a part of the pavement or ruin the parade.  :)  I make light of this but know it was a serious situation and glad it ended so well.

Marilyne, thanks for providing Jean the link to the Christian Photographers site.  I post there each morning as well as here.

Good Wednesday Morning,  Everyone from
the very cold and windy, rocky coast of Maine...

The wind chill factor here is 13 deg F.... and
windy,  which means that I have to dress warmer
inside,  and put on my Lasko  Cyclonic Ceramic Heater..

This along with my insulated black out window
curtains,  helps me maintain the heat
in my apartment when days are cold
and blustery.        Winters is here!!!

I had an appointment yesterday with my
Urologist, and am pleased with results,
which turn out to be pretty normal and
uncomplicated for  a gal my age...

This ends many checkups that I have had this
Summer with good results.     (YEAH!)

So now on to the process of continuing to age
and dealing with the normal obstacles that
are found on  my journey into old age.

I am in "great shape for the shape I am in",
and hanging in there!

Which I am very grateful for!

Have a good day,  Everyone
Sandy

Sandy, I feel I am also "in good shape for the shape I'm in".  My outside shape isn't too good, but inside things aren't too bad.

Larry, Tom did say there were changes in the school since he had been there last, but I didn't ask about the movable walls and he didn't say.  I have an idea those were removed years ago.  Tom was there in 1966 which is over 50 years ago.

When our HS class celebrated 50 years, we had one night at the school and there were lots of changes.  There had been an addition put on and several houses were removed for the addition.  In the addition was a new auditorium so the old auditorium had a different purpose.  One thing, the floor was all one level instead of sloping toward the front.  We had a tour of the school and had refreshments.  I don't remember what my dad's classroom was, but it was no longer a print shop because that was located in a nearby building.  A few years ago in a reorganization, our high school was closed and another group put in there - City High School - where high achieving students are placed prior to college.

Larry, your Wednesday night supper at church makes my mouth water as I do like turkey dinners.  We are having our Thanksgiving with James and family and his in-laws on Saturday.  I'm tempted to get a couple of frozen turkey dinners for the Turkey Day.

I haven't looked at our forecast for today but the sun is shining and radar shows no snow for our area for several days.  We are at 27 degrees and probably will be in the low 30s which means I'll have to start wearing my winter jacket which keeps me quite warm.

Mary Ann

Congratulations, Sandy, on a good check up.  I always feel better after that kind of check up, too!

P.S.  Hello to you, too, Mary Ann.  You must have been posting while I was reading Sandy's post!

Sue

Marilyne

Mary Ann, I see that Paul has been moved back again, and will now be departing at 4:30 this afternoon.  Seems you can depend on his schedule being moved a couple of times before he actually arrives or departs.  That will be 2:30 for me, so I will be watching.  There were a few people at the canal yesterday, even though the area was covered in snow.  Probably more will show up for Paul, unless he gets moved again to a later time.

I'll go out today to Walgreen's, to get a filter for my humidifier, and some other stuff, but other than that I'll stay home and out of the smoky air.  Lots of short errands to do before older daughter and granddaughter arrive on Monday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sandy, great that you're in good health for your age. I'm a little apprehensive this morning, because I woke up with pain in a couple of teeth.  I haven't been to the dentist in a long while, and now I'm starting to regret it??

Larry, your Wednesday night meal at church, sounds like a good one.  I love a full turkey dinner, when it's prepared by someone other than myself.  Over the years, when I cooked the holiday meals, I would always lose my appetite, by the time everything was ready and we were all sitting around the table.  I would usually sit there and pick at a few things, and maybe have a piece of pie and coffee afterwards, but that was it!

Sue, Good to see you here.  Hope you return soon and tell us about your plans for Thanksgiving.

FlaJean

Marilyne, thanks for the URL.  My husband used to be a member of that site but had been inactive for a couple of years so wasn’t notified about the change.  He has taken a lot of good photos and should post some.  Maybe I can get him interested again.

Marilyn, there are too many times when an arrival or departure is noted for a particular time and I'll look to see the speed and often it is 0.0 knots.  Sometimes the time is changed while I'm looking at the ship info.  They're not very considerate of computer people!

The sun is shining brightly right now and I can't read my thermometer because the sun is shining on it!!!  I can see the temperature is in the 30s.  Tom just came home from an errand and remarked about the sun, but also said it is cold.

The other day I saw something online about "why your dog or cat follows you into the bathroom".  I started to read it, but there were a lot of other things pets do that seemed to need explaining so after many quirks, I did not read more.  I could have told them how to keep the pet from following a person into the bathroom - shut the door!  Which I do!  Anyway, I got up about 3:30 am, did my thing and got up to wash my hands.  There was something to my left that shouldn't have been there.  It was Kendrick.  He didn't move at first but when I said something to him, he did move but stayed where he was.  He was on a pair of slippers and I don't know if that was accidental or on purpose.  Before I got up at 6:30 he was on my bed three times for various lengths of time.  I don't dare move then because he'll leave.

I haven't done a good job with Kendrick's grass since I brought it in so I'm going to trim the dry grass and spread a spoonful on the remains and hope I'll water it more often.   Last time I used a tablespoon of seed but this time I'll use a teaspoon.  That tablespoonful filled an entire 10" hanging basket.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I liked reading about your surprise encounter with Kendrick, in the the middle of the night.  I can imagine him sleeping on a pair of slippers, especially if they had any fluffy fabric on them.

It looks like Paul is still scheduled for 4:30, so I'll be watching.  It wouldn't surprise me to see him push forward to a later time. His status still says "moored", which I guess must be somewhere close-by, if he intends to make it to the canal in 45 minutes?

Mary Ann

Marilyn, if you have the Duluth map, look at it and you will see where Paul is moored.  The map will tell you also how far from the Duluth canal Paul is - in nautical miles (nmi).  The map appears when you clock on the Harbor Lookout - to the left is the schedule and to the right is the map.  You can move the map by placing your cursor in the area and moving it.

Kendrick is on my bed now, leaning (sleeping) on some towels that should be in the linen closet.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Mary Ann, I accidently dropped a small piece of lettuce on the kitchen floor yesterday while making a sandwich. Shan ate it. I geve him a couple more small pieces and he ate them too. Is he turning into a rabbit?

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Oh no, I missed Paul, after all that planning ahead!  When they changed the time yet again, I decided to make a quick trip to Walgreen's (about four blocks away), but I must have misjudged the time, because when I got home and checked the Canal Cam, he had already departed, and I could see the tail end of the ship.   Oh well, I know he'll be back in a few more days.  In the meantime I'll check that Duluth map. Thanks for telling me about it.

MarsGal - I've never known a cat to eat veggies!  Cut Shan a little piece of carrot or a couple of peas, and see if he'll eat those too?
???

Mary Ann

MarsGal, I don't think Kendrick has had access to vegetables and the worst he's had was a sticker from a tomato that stuck to his foot and he licked it off and it stuck to the roof of his mouth.  That is where he barked at me.  We knew something was wrong, but not what.  After at least a week, I went into my bedroom and there was something on the bed that I knew he had coughed up.  It turned out to be the label/sticker and he ceased coughing.  We took him to the vet anyway and Kendrick was found to be OK.  I'll have to see if he's interested in any vegetable.  I've heard of pets eating strange things; I just don't know any.

Marilyn, Paul went from 4:30 to 5:05 to 4:51.  I did see him leave.  Incidentally, I don't remember without looking but there is a ship that is longer now than Paul.  If you look at the list of ships on the schedule, you may find it.  It could be Indiana Harbor, but I'm not sure.  It's 1014 feet long.

It takes 25 hours from the Soo to Duluth.  Duluth doesn't tell where their ultimate destination is, but the Soo does.  When a ship goes through the Soo to Duluth or Superior, I note the time at the Soo and it usually is 25 hours to arrival at Duluth.

Mary Ann

Lindancer

Larry, Your dinner with the Vets. sounds interesting, the food also sounds like you enjoyed that also.  I have had a good and bad week.  Got another nose bleed. I think last week I wrote that I had and ingrown toe nail, next to the one with the gout. I called last Wed, and could not get and appointment until this WEd. as that is when my foot doctor is in town. Had a 11'30 appointment. I now have an infected ingrown toe nail and he had to take part of the nail off. (I know you had that done a while back) Then at 1PM I had my biweekly date with the Hematologist the good news now a 2nd week and my blood count did not go down, MY blood pressure

was up but I might have been because of my visit to the foot doctor. Have to go back to him Sat.

Mary Ann  N matter what time I get up at night Taffy has to go in with me, it is also where I brush her every night before we go to bed. She has been doing a lot of racing up and down the hall in the morning

Click for Riverhead, NY Forecast

Mary Ann

Marilyn, if you look in yet tonight, Paul is coming back about 9:37 CST.  He couldn't have gone far if he is returning so soon.

Gloria, that is too bad with your foot problems.  I should go to a podiatrist regularly to have my toenails cut but I wait until Annie is available.  She does a good job, but there is too much time between cuts.  Kendrick sleeps a lot downstairs in the family room and I think he is not aware when I get up.  I also think he's gotten the message that I don't want him in there with me.  He insists on rubbing against my legs wherever I am sitting and my slacks show it.  But I close the door when I am in the bathroom and he doesn't try to come in.

I just "mowed" Kendrick's grass and tomorrow I'll put in some new seed and try to remember to water it more often.  He likes the grass and has never bothered my houseplants although he has sniffed them.

It isn't quite time for bed, but I'll wish everyone a good night now.

Mary Ann

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is a chilly and still rainy morning but the forecast says the rain will likely be over in a couple of hours.  I cancelled out taking my friend for coffee this morning as didn't want the responsibility of getting him out on a rainy morning. I am glad I did as seem to be running on low battery this morning and didn't even get up until 8:30.

We had a great Thanksgiving dinner at the Church last evening with turkey, dressing, corn, sweet potatoes, green beans, broccoli and a dinner roll plus a pumpkin type rolled cake with filling dessert.  I was very good and the event was very well attended.  We had 10 Veterans from the VA Spinal Center as our guest and 5 or 6 therapy dogs and their owners in attendance.  Our Veterans and families were honored.  The Veterans from the Spinal Center were each given a beautiful knitted lap robe that the craft ladies had made this last year.  Finally our choir director/pianist played a number of Patriotic songs for us while we were going through the serving line and then everyone sang God Bless America.  When we got back to the house Scott put up the curtain fixtures and hung the new black out drapes that Pat had gotten and also put in the last slide out shelf.

Sandy, sure sounds like time for that heater to come out of storage.  Glad you were pleased with the results of your doctor's appointment.

Mary Ann, it is the inside of us that generally is the most important.  About the only change I remember about our visit back to where I went to High School is that they had moved one of the one room school houses that were dotted over the county to the school yard I guess as a reminder of the past.  I am glad I was able to attend the one room school as it was a great experience and no child was neglected as there were so few of us.  I don't think we will be having any more turkey as I doubt it will be available next Wednesday at Cracker Barrel where we plan on going for our early Thanksgiving dinner.  Scott told us last night that he was going to have to work on Wednesday evening but at least gets Thanksgiving Day off, one of the two days Pizza Hut closes during the year.

Marilyne, you use a humidifier and we use a dehumidifier to keep our humidity down.  I noticed this morning that we were at 38% humidity here in the house.  Nice to see your older daughter and granddaughter will be spending time with you and AJ next week for the holiday.  For a number of years I have been faithfully seeing my dentist every 6 months or more often if I lost a filling or a tooth broke.  I found I could either pay now or pay a lot more later as have been there and done that back when funds were very tight.  Did you nibble on the food as you prepared the Thanksgiving meal and thus sort of ruin your appetite or were you just tired of seeing the food by the time it got on the table?  :)

Jean, I am sure the Christian Photography site would welcome your husbands photos.  While I participate in the general daily forum there I don't post photos as am just not very interested in photography.

MarsGal, don't you expect that Shan ate the lettuce for the same reason cats like grass.  I looked up why cats do eat grass and found some interesting information.  There were a variety of answers.

deAngel, I feel for you and the infected toenail.  I had partial big toenail removals done several years ago and then last year had the whole nails removed from the two big toes and glad I did.  Sorry to read of the nose bleed but happy you didn't need another shot.

I'm not awake yet and I've been up twice this morning.  I got up around 7 am, did some computing and went back to bed at 8 am, got up at 9 am.  The second time got me.  As I was getting up at 7 am, Tom was just coming in from driving.  He said it wasn't worth it today.  He's not subbing any more this week, I think he told me.

The sun is shining but there is no warmth with it; our temperature is about 31 degrees.  I was starting to put on my winter coat yesterday when Tom came upstairs and said he'd get the mail, so I haven't really worn the coat yet this season.  The 30 degree temps will have me wearing it whenever I go out.

Larry, your meal last night at church sounded like what I'd like.  I have no idea what we will have because I am furnishing only the turkey.  Tom may fix something and I have an idea it will be green bean casserole which both he and I like.  Larry, I don't mean to be picky, but one of your sentences made me laugh - you said "I was very good" and I know you meant "It was very good", but you wrote it in the right place.

Annie is headed for Las Vegas today with her boss/SO and will be gone five days.  She will come here and go to Holland with us next week for Thanksgiving - and we are thankful (!) for that.  So often she misses family things because of work and our Thanksgiving will be on Saturday, a work day.  She came here last night to take care of the cat's litter, which she often does.  He's HER cat and we say that even though he lives here.  Her SO is very allergic to cats.  He's my buddy, but he's HER cat (she bought him).

Marilyn, it was strange about Paul last night.  The ship left Duluth for wherever about 5 pm and was on the schedule to return about 9:30 pm, which was odd.  I looked in shortly before 9:30 and he was no where to be seen, not on the schedule and he isn't there now.  I think someone got their schedule mixed up and realized it so took the ship off the schedule.

I "mowed" Kendrick's grass last night so today I'll put in a few seeds and water them.  It is up to me for him to have fresh grass and it grows faster than he can eat it.  Meaning I have to be sure to water the grass regularly.

Our humidifier is ready to fill.  It is small and does a fair job.  Now that I have better water pressure I'll be more willing to fill it, however, filled it is heavy.

I go to our dentist three times a year because I have had periodontal work done.  My periodontist developed Parkinson's so retired.  I didn't like his successor and I went to another and I didn't like him either - it was their professionalism, not the work - so I prevailed on my then regular dentist to let his hygienists do the work.  It's "penny wise and pound foolish" because I have to pay for the third cleaning as my insurance only allows two regular.  If I went to the periodontist, they would pay.  The dentist is across the road and the periodontist is about 10 miles away.  Seeing I don't drive now ------.

Good morning.  I know I have been missing for a couple days.   Yesterday I had to have a procedure done , but it went well  and I wasn't there as long as I had thought.  Won't know any results for about a week, but the doctor told me he didn't really anticipated there would be any big problem.  So, that was good news.   My DIL took me and we stopped for lunch and then came home.   Since I had had anesthesia , I needed someone to stay all night, so my son came and stayed.  He left for work about 6 this morning,  and I am fine.  No restrictions, except for just rest for a couple days.

It has been snowing here for a couple hours now.  And, it is snowing hard right now.  WHen I first got up this morning, about 5, they had already cancelled several school districts.   The forecast for freezing rain was the reason they decided to close the schools.  Some of the buses have to leave pretty early to get into the rural areas.  So, even tho some parents were complaining on FB,  it turned out to be a good  plan.  The snow plow has already been down the driveway right next to my building.  And, the pine trees are all covered outside my window.  They were predicting several inches before it turns to rain later today.  Hope my family don't have any problems getting home from work this evening.

Everybody is make comments about it is too early for snow.   Sure hope this early snow doesn't mean it is going to be a bad snowy winter.   We had so much rain all summer, that I hope that doesn't mean a lot of snow.

Larry, your dinner sounds so good.  I am not a big fan of turkey,  but it is always nice to have it at least, once a year.  I am going out, so that means I won't get any leftovers for a turkey sandwich the next day.  Like MaryAnn mentioned,  I might get myself a frozen turkey dinner.

MaryAnn, I have just not been watching for any of the ships coming in and out lately.  I did see a ship coming into the Soo locks, but with the camera fixed where it is now, the ship was gone before it got into the lock, I think.  It just disappeared from the screen.  I think the way the camera was situated before, you could see the ship raising  up and down,  whichever it was.  And, I guess it is almost time for the Duluth channel to close up.  I haven't seen a ship going into there for a good while.

I went back and read the posts from yesterday, but didn't make any notes.

I hope everyone is doing well and will have a good day.

Joy, regarding the ships on the Great Lakes, the shipping season will close January 15 until March 15 (give or take a few days).  The lakes all freeze somewhat and that is the time to make any major repairs to the ships.  If they can get through a lake there might be a ship during those dates, however, Lake Erie freezes completely because it is more shallow than the other lakes.  If we have an extremely cold winter, even Lake Superior can freeze 90+%.  A lot depends on the depths of the lakes and I'm not sure if Superior is the deepest or not.  You can remember the names of the lakes this way:  Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior - HOMES.  All ports will be open until about January 15.  I have noticed a lot of departures and arrivals are in the early morning hours and I'm not getting up in the middle of the night to see a boat go through a channel in the dark.  The Soo changes the view occasionally.  I prefer the other one, but I have nothing to say about it.  A ship going to the right (east) is usually headed for a port in Canada, Eastern Michigan or Ohio.  Going to the left (west) a ship is usually going to Duluth or Superior or a Canadian port.  A ship going to the east will be lowered in the lock and going to the west, a ship will be raised.  Lake Superior is higher than Lake Huron and there are rapids on the St Mary's River which necessitates the locks.
